Homecoming 2009 “LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS!” he official Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason rankings were still a couple of weeks off, but MSU Athletic Director Floyd Kerr had already made his prediction for Golden Bears football in 2009. If the team plays up to its potential, he said, “we can win this league.”

Kerr points to a number of positive indicators that lead him to expect an improvement over last year’s .500 record.

“We have so many players coming back, basically the nucleus of the team, on the offensive line, on the defensive line and kids who were sitting out who have developed,” he says.

“Recruiting,” he adds, “went much better than we thought it would in terms of the skilled areas. ( We’ve landed) some young people and some junior and senior transfers who bring some maturity and are going to be able to contribute.”

Also, “leadership is much improved,” Kerr says, with standouts in that area such as linebacker Justin Lawrence and quarterback Carlton Jackson. “They’ve been here working out this summer,” he notes.

At Homecoming, the Bears face the North Carolina A&T Aggies. They are prepping for a big win in the game, near midseason, to “build momentum and have carryover value,” Kerr says.

While the Morgan alumni at Hughes Stadium are honoring the Homecoming theme, “Morgan Forever, Forever Morgan,” Kerr says their team on the field will be playing to their own theme: “Let’s get down to business!”

Morgan football suffered a slight drop in fan attendance last year, Kerr reports, but the team is hoping for a rebound this year, at Homecoming and for the season. A number of exciting events on the schedule, and some wins, should help with the marketing effort, he says. On Sept. 19, MSU travels to New Jersey to play in the Whitney Young Classic at Giants Stadium. The Bears also have two nationally televised games this season: Towson University on Sept. 26, broadcast on ESPNU, and Howard University on Oct. 17, broadcast on Versus. In addition, the Homecoming game on Oct. 10 will be regionally televised on MASN. The Bears are dedicating the Howard U match-up to MSU President Dr. Earl S. Richardson, who is retiring shortly after the end of the season, after 25 years in office.

“We want to bring him as much exposure as we can orchestrate and bring him a win,” Kerr says. “It would be good for us to win a championship for him. I think that would be fantastic. It gives the team a cause.”

I’m excited about this opportunity to meet old and new friends and look forward to what’s new on the campus. Our beloved alma mater has been beautifully adorned in orange and blue to Gloria E. Wayman make us feel good about coming back home.

Where has the time gone? It seems just yesterday that we were on Morgan’s campus celebrating Alumni Day and Commencement. I trust each of you had a restful and relaxing summer.

Homecoming 2009 will certainly be memorable, as we participate in many of the planned activities. It will also be a time of reflection and sadness, as we realize we are nearing the end of the 25year tenure of our beloved Dr. Earl S. Richardson, President of Morgan State University. I’m glad that I have made plans to be on campus to celebrate these historic moments with him and my fellow alumni.

I also take this opportunity to remind my fellow alumni that, just as our students are still depending on your moral and financial support, the University desperately needs your voice and support to ensure that Morgan receives equitable funding and that our programs are not duplicated at other institutions.

Alumni Day 2009 An Historic Celebration

The year 2009 has been an exciting the luncheon ranged from 1939 — with and memorable time for the Morgan Mrs. Ruth Hall Smith, ’39, of Lutherville, State family, as we celebrate the tenure of Md. — all the way through history to 2004! The Bear Mobile Extends Its Range Morgan State University’s Bear Mobile generated excitement at the Camden Yards Sports Complex in Baltimore this past July, during the African American Heritage Festival. The Bear Mobile is a brightly colored blue and orange conversion van equipped to let the public know about the offerings of the University. Onboard are interactive video games featuring MSU teams and characters, promotional videos and printed materials, information about Morgan’s academic programs, and more. Over the next year, the Bear Mobile will visit high school games, college expos and other events around the state as part of the Morgan Experience Tour. Morgan Returns to Urban League Football Classic The Golden Bears of MSU will face the Winston-Salem State University Rams on Saturday, Sept. 19 in the New York Urban League’s 39th Annual Football Classic. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. at Giants Stadium in The Meadowlands, N.J. Tickets are $20 to $60 and are available at the Ticketmaster office on Morgan’s campus and Ticketmaster locations everywhere.

The “host” hotel for Bears supporters is the Renaissance Hotel in Rutherford, N.J. A pre-game celebration will be held on Friday, Sept. 18 from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Information about room rates and the cost of the celebration is available from the Alumni Relations Office, (443) 885-3015.

SAVE THE DATE! Friday, May 7, 2010 MSU’s Annual Golf Tournament

MSU's facility-naming and recognition ceremony will honor champion swimming coaches who served during three different eras at Morgan.

Two events during Homecoming 2009 will honor Stewart A. Brooks, Ralph W.E. Jones Jr. and James J. Mack, all exceptional MSU educators and champion swimming coaches who served during three different eras at Morgan. A Tribute Breakfast to recognize and memorialize the coaches will be held on Friday, Oct. 9 at 8:30 a.m., in Hurt Gymnasium, Room 211 (the Arena). As part of the breakfast program, lettering will be unveiled on the exterior of Hurt Gymnasium that names the gym’s swimming facility “The BROOKS-JONESMACK Natatorium.”

The facility-naming and recognition ceremony is $35.00 per person and is open to all MSU alumni, family and friends. A special welcome goes out to the student-athletes and support persons who participated in Morgan’s swimming and diving programs in the past. MSU Choir Tours South America, South Africa

The organizers of Morgan State University’s 20th Annual Golf Tournament hosted 90 golfers at the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City, Md., on May 11. The annual event, which includes games, a luncheon and prizes, is a fundraiser put on by the MSU Foundation to benefit Morgan’s athletic scholarship fund.

Three local golf pros — Rodney “Binx” Watts (MSU ’67), Al Wilson (MSU ’70) and Tim McCready, who attended Morgan for three years — lent their expertise and energy for the eighth straight year to help make the tournament a success. They also held a Golf Clinic for beginning golfers that was very well received.

This year’s tournament honored Dr. Earl S. Richardson with a beautiful glass trophy. It was his last Golf Tournament as Morgan State’s President.

Also honored was Nicholas Mangione, former owner of Turf Valley Resort. Mr. Mangione passed away just after last year’s tournament and had been a huge supporter of the event.

MEAC Tournament Set for March 2010

Members of the Morgan State University Choir toured two cities in Colombia, South America, from June 15 through June 21 this year performing American Gospel music at the request of the local Embassy. The choir gave performances at Teatro Lido and El Tesoro Mall in Medellin and at the Coisubsidio Roberto Arias Perez Theater in Bogotá. The choir continued its international tour with performances in South Africa during July.

Morgan’s Golden Bears will return to WinstonSalem, N.C., next year to defend their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament Championship. The MEAC tournament has been set for March 8–13, 2010 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

ALU M N I Tyrone R. Baines, Ph.D., ’65, has received the Bridge Builders Award from the ZETA RHO FOUNDATION of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Los Angeles, Calif. Dr. Baines, a diversity consultant for American Honda Motor Co., Inc., received the award for his support of the Fraternity’s Youth and Outreach Activities. He served as the Director of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s youth and education programs and advises his fraternity on youth programming. Baines is also a philanthropist and advises the fraternity on fundraising opportunities.

Reginald Ballard, Jr., ’72 was awarded an honorary Doctor of Education degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland for his work with the students at Cardozo High School in Washington, D.C. Ballard, a former principal at Cardozo, worked to create and improve college-level courses at the school and has sent more than 20 of his former students to the St. Mary’s College on scholarship, where they graduated from the public honors college.

Reginald’s father, Reginald “Kiyi” Ballard, Sr., was a member of the Morgan State University Hall of Fame and Varsity M Club. Reginald Ballard, Jr. is now a part of D.C. School Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee’s administrative team.

Lorenzo L. Esters, Ed.D., ’08, Senior Advisor to the President at Dillard University in New Orleans, has been appointed Vice President of the Office for Access and the Advancement of Public Black Universities. Dr. Esters is President of Morgan State University’s first doctoral alumni chapter, the Community College Leadership Doctoral Program Alumni Chapter. He received his Master of Science degree in Higher Education and his doctorate in Urban Education Leadership from Morgan.

Eric Feiss, ’03, has been named an Associate of GWWO Architects, a firm based in Baltimore. Feiss joined GWWO in 2005 and has played key roles in a vari4

ety of cultural and educational projects.

Projects he has worked on include a major expansion and renovation of the Daniel Z. Gibson Performing Arts Center at Washington College, the new Red Pump Elementary School for Harford County Public Schools and conceptual planning for the renovation and expansion of the Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University. He earned his Master of Architecture degree at Morgan.

Thaddeus Hoffmeister, ’95, has taken a position at the University of Dayton School of Law as an Assistant Professor of Law. Before joining the USDL faculty in 2007, Hoffmeister spent four years as a legislative director, counsel and subcommittee staff director in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was also a clerk for Judge Anne E. Thompson in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey and served in the military as a Judge Advocate General in Korea, Japan and Washington, D.C. He is a Major in the Army National Guard.

The Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation has given its highest honor, the Distinguished Career Service Award, to Jacqueline Lawson, ’75. “Since coming to the PBGC more than 30 years ago, Jackie has provided valued service…embodying fairness and efficiency and acting as a successful agent for both traits agency-wide,” reads a statement from the corporation. Lawson leads the development of PBGC’s Corporate Performance Reporting System and is responsible for quarterly performance reporting to the corporation’s leadership and to external stakeholders.

Lonnie R. Morris, Jr., ’97, has been appointed Director of Admissions for Bowie State University in Bowie, Md. He previously served as Vice President of Enrollment Management at Holy Names University in Oakland, Calif., as Director of Admissions at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tenn., and as Director of Admissions for Edward Waters College in

Jacksonville, Fla. The former Morgan marketing major also has a master’s degree in organization development from The Johns Hopkins University.

Foster parent Agnes Ogletree, ’83, has founded Help Our Children, a not-for-profit organization based in Wilmington, Del., that offers tutoring and cultural enrichment to grade school children being raised by grandparents, guardians and foster parents. Help Our Children joins the resources of Brandywood Elementary School in Wilmington with the talent and commitment of retired educators and other volunteers, to help Brandywood students improve their reading comprehension, fluency and writing skills. Fifteen of the students celebrated “An Evening of Success” in May. Dr. Allen Anthony Robinson, ’05, has received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He is now enrolled in a residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Dr. Robinson graduated from Morgan with a degree in biology.

Olympic gold medalist Rochelle Stevens, ’88, was featured in an article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal in May. The article covered her career as one of the world’s top ten 400-meter runners, her education at Morgan State University and her new job as a Behavioral Specialist working with disruptive children at Cherokee Elementary School in Memphis, Tenn.

Stevens has earned a master’s degree from Columbus University and is working on her doctorate.

Baltimore native Carl W. Turnipseed, ’69, Executive Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Felician College in May. “He has devoted his nearly 40year career at the Federal Reserve…to

achieving excellence, promoting continuous learning and encouraging professional growth,” said Felician President Sister Theresa Mary Martin in presenting the award. Turnipseed was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 2002. He is a member of the board of the MSU Foundation, a life member of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association, and a member of the 1867 Club. He received his M.B.A. from New York University.

Linda J. Washington, ’70, Assistant Secretary for Administration for the U.S. Department of Transportation, received the Vanguard Award from America’s Charities in May. The first-time, special award honored Washington’s work as Local Federal Coordinating Committee chair for the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area. Federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area pledged more than $62.7 million in 2008, making it the largest campaign in the history of the program.

MSU honors graduate Channa Williams, ’05, ’09, returned from a three-week stay in Hong Kong, China and Macau in January. She studied Asian financial markets and Asian culture during the trip, which was a course offered by Saint Louis University’s John Cook School of Business. Williams, who received her M.B.A. from Morgan with honors in May, is a financial business analyst with the CPA and management consulting firm Stout, Causey & Horning, LLC, based in Sparks, Md. Her bachelor’s degree in political science and economics is also from Morgan.

Louis “Lolo” Willis, ’81, has been appointed Executive Director of the 28th Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). Willis was raised in USVI’s capital, Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Morgan, returned home the same year and joined the USVI’s Bureau of Internal Revenue in 1983. He became director of the Bureau in 2000.

The MSU 2140 Alumni Chapter is under new leadership. The chapter was established Oct. 22, 2004 with the goal of reaching out to Morgan alumni between the ages of 21 and 40. The MSU 2140 Alumni Chapter has been inactive for several years. The chapter will be reestablished with a new direction under the leadership of Ms. Truemenda Green, Class of 1993. N.J. Alumni Host Successful Events Nearly 100 people turned out for the New Jersey Alumni Chapter’s All-Class Reunion Picnic on Saturday, May 30 at Colonial Park in Franklin Township, N.J. The successful event is part of the chapter’s membership drive, which has also featured two Happy Hour events, one at Papillon’s in South Orange and another at Delta’s Restaurant in New Brunswick. The chapter reports the events have turned out more and more Morgan alumni and that the group is gradually reclaiming members.

Homecoming 2009 Host Hotel The Sheraton Baltimore North in Towson, Md., has been confirmed as this year’s Homecoming Host Hotel. Rooms are available for Friday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009. The discounted price for all MSU alumni and friends is $147.06 per room, per night, which includes Maryland State and hotel occupancy taxes. To receive the discounted rate, you must specify that you are calling to make reservations for the “Morgan State University Homecoming Group.” This group rate is for single, double, triple or quad room accommodations.
