Morgan Gears Up for

Homecoming 2005 BUSINESS MEETING • GALA • PARADE • GAME & TAILGATING • ALUMNI HOMECOMING SERVICE As the football season quickly approaches, Morgan State University is getting ready for Homecoming 2005! This year’s festivities will be October 14th – 16th and MSU is once again rolling out the red carpet to welcome all alumni, parents and students to the campus.

Whether tailgating before the big football game, enjoying the festive parade or attending the black tie gala, this year’s schedule includes a variety of events.

On Friday, October 14th, guests are invited to attend the Alumni Association’s Annual Business Meeting at 12 pm at the recital hall in the Murphy Fine Arts Center. Here, guests can learn about the spectacular growth and change at Morgan and hear the “State of the University” straight from the President’s mouth.

Later that day, put on your finest and enjoy “An Evening in Paradise” at this year’s Homecoming Gala at Martin’s West on Dogwood Road.

On Saturday, October 15th at 9 a.m., all eyes will be on Chinquapin Parkway and The Alameda as the Annual Homecoming Parade gets underway. The parade includes a variety of entertainment, and is always a fixture of Morgan’s homecoming weekend entertainment.

The grand marshals for this year's homecoming parade will be members of the 1976 Morgan State lacrosse team. The first of its kind at Morgan, the team is the subject of the book "Ten Bears," which is currently being developed as a feature film.

The gloves will come off at 1:00 p.m. as the Bears take on the Howard Bison. One of the MEAC's most intense rivalries, alumni and football fans from near and far will be on hand to witness another classic black college football match-up.

Service. Created to memorialize alumni, faculty, staff and students from Morgan State, this candlelight service is a memorable event to celebrate those Morgan family members who have passed on since last year’s homecoming.

Rev. Pauline Wilkins will preside over ceremonies and a repass will be held in the Alumni House immediately following the service.

Dear Fellow Alumni: Fall is truly a wonderful season. It is a unique time for Morgan, not only for its vibrant colors, but for the special events that create an exciting atmosphere for Morganites both past and present. There is a saying that best describes Morgan State today,“There is no place like home, familiar, new and improved.” When was your last visit to Morgan State? You will find that it is indeed somewhat familiar and it is surely new and improved!

Under the leadership of Dr. Earl S. Richardson, Morgan has become a university transformed. There is a new vision among students, staff and alumni. Valuable programs are being developed and instituted, and the facilities you once knew have undergone extensive renovations. Many of the buildings you see near completion, such as the new student life center and library will be state-of-the-art. I invite you, fellow alumni, to put Morgan State University on your fall calendar and visit your “new” and “improved” home.

There will be many exciting things to do at this year’s Homecoming. We also ask alumni and friends to “give back” – financially and spiritually, so that we can keep the vision before us.

Remember, there is no place like home – and for all alumni and friends, home will always be Morgan State University.

Honorees Recognized at 30th Annual NAFEO Conference in Washington, D.C. The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) held its 30th Annual National Conference at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, DC, March 20–23, 2005.

Each year, member institutions are given the opportunity to recognize their alumni who have distin-

guished themselves in their careers, as well as acknowledge the contributions they have made to their alma maters. Our honorees this year were: Mrs. Genester Nix Miller, ’49; Mr. William Contee, ’50 (posthumously) and The Honorable Clarence “Tiger” Davis, ’68 & ’78.

Morgan Regent Named Among 50 Most Important African Americans in Technology

General (Ret.) Johnnie E. Wilson, president and COO of the engineering consulting firm, Dimensions International, Inc., was named among the 50 most important blacks in technology by a selection panel for Career Communications, Group, Inc., publisher of US Black Engineer Information Technology Magazine.

General Wilson was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and raised in Lorain, Ohio. He entered the Army in August 1961 as an enlisted soldier, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG) before attending Officer Candidate School (OCS). On completion of OCS in 1967, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Wilson also holds a Master of Science degree in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology.

General Wilson has held a wide variety of important command and staff positions, culminating in his last assignment as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Material Command.

General Wilson also served as the Deputy Commanding General, of the 21st TAACOM, the Army’s largest and most diverse logistics unit.

Based on his wide experience with leading soldiers, General Wilson was selected to command the Ordnance Center and School responsible for the training and professional development of thousands of soldiers, NCOs and officers every year. Following this successful assignment, Wilson served as the Chief of Staff, AMC, where he was responsible for resource and personnel management for a workforce with over 80,000 military and civilian members. From 1994 to 1996, General Wilson served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Department of the Army.

General Wilson, has received numerous military and civilian awards. Along with his service as a regent, he is a member of several other boards and associations of various companies.

50th

Anniversary is Golden for Class of ‘55

The Morgan State College (University) Class of 1955 celebrated its gold anniversary during commencement weekend in May. Chaired by Sara Bragg Gray,Walter Carr and Dr. Clayton Stansbury, the 10 member committee planned a most enjoyable weekend for the returning graduates, many of whom had not been back on the campus since their 1955 graduation. Were they ever impressed!

The Holiday Inn, Cromwell Bridge Road, headquartered the graduates’ homecoming

as they enjoyed hospitality rooms upon arrival. They were then whisked away on a chartered bus for the Inner Harbor where they cruised the Bay Lady luxury liner while enjoying dinner, dancing and chatting with friends. Live music, provided by The Fuzzy Kane Trio helped to make the evening special.

On Saturday, over 110 grads and their guests attended the 65th Annual Alumni Awards and Recognition Luncheon. The Class of 1955 presented Dr. Earl S.

Alumni Welcomed Back

Alumni Day 2005 was held on May 14, 2005. The day’s activities began in the Recital Hall of the Murphy Fine Arts Center with a morning address by President Richardson to over 300 alumni chapter presidents and members, who represented graduating classes ending in “0” and “5”.

The Class of 1950 presented a check in the amount of $10,000 and the Class of 1970 presented a check for $2,140, toward the $10,000 pledge.

Alumni Day May 2005 Luncheon

Richardson with a check for $52,000. Tours of the campus and picture taking followed the luncheon, and later that evening, an informal get-together was held at the Holiday Inn. On Sunday morning, over 30 grads participated in the commencement exercise.

Many left the campus with a “Can’t wait for Homecoming, I’ll be back next year” farewell. One graduate remarked,“We got to sit in the emeritus section of the Alumni Luncheon. What an honor!”

Chartering New Territory Southern Maryland Chapter

The Southern Maryland Chapter was chartered at the May 14, 2005 Alumni Business Meeting which was held in the Murphy Fine Arts Center.

Members of the Class of 1970 were mailed information asking them to help with the fulfillment of an important gift. The Class of 1970 has pledged a donation in the amount of $10,000 to be presented during the 2005 Homecoming. Alumni of that year are asked to help make a contribution in the name of the Class of 1970. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Morgan State University Foundation and in the memo section, write in Class of 1970.

Class of ’67 Unfolds Plan with Soul

The Class of ’67, the MSC (Morgan State College) Centennial Class, is making plans for 2007. Calling themselves “The Soulful Centennials,” they began reunion meetings in June 2005. The newly formed committee decided on a two-year plan of fundraising activities to culminate with a presentation in 2007. Class members are invited to join the committee at a Homecoming reception after this year’s Homecoming game.

Howard Cornish Chapter

The Howard Cornish Chapter extends an invitation to those who are interested in membership. Choir Set to Sing to D.C. Faithful

The Washington D.C. Chapter is excited to announce that it will host the worldrenowned Morgan State University Choir in concert at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, 1225 “R” Street, NW, Washington D.C. on November 20, 2005 at 5 p.m. Ticket information will be presented on the Alumni website at www.morgan.edu/alumni.

The D.C. Chapter will also have a new 2005 schedule. Chapter members will meet the third Sunday of each month from September through June 2005 at 4:00 p.m.

The meetings will be held at the Northern Bus Division at 4615 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.

Those classes ending in “6” & “1,” 1956 through 2001, will soon celebrate their reunions. Special recognition will be given to our 50th Anniversary class of 1956, along with Emeritus Classes of 1955 and earlier. We would like those persons who are celebrating reunions to begin planning so that they may have a memorable event. Devon Brown, ’71, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, a position he has held since January 2002, has been selected as the “2005 Best in the Business” for outstanding leadership by the American Correctional Association (ACA).

The ACA recognized him as being one of the premier correctional officials in the country. He oversees more than 9,500 employees and 14 institutions.

LaShawn O. Hazel ’02, has joined the Baltimore-based architecture firm of GWWO, Inc. Architects, where he will serve as a member of the architectural team. He is currently a member of the design team for historic documentation and renovations to Lockwood House, a significant Civil War building. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Organization of Minority Architects.

Jarrett L. Carter, ’03, was hired in May as the new assistant director for the office of Public Relations and Communications at Morgan State University.

He previously worked as an editor and freelance writer in the Washingtonmetropolitan area.

Romeo Joyner, ’97 & ’00, received his Certified Correctional Supervisor/Juvenile (CCS/JUV) certification. He was the first person in the country to earn the CCS/JUV credential and the 54th Certified Correction Person to become re-certified. Mr. Joyner is only the seventh person to obtain dual certification.

Fatima Fofana, ’91, is a Strategic Partner at the law office of The Ghatt Law Group.

She focuses her practice on broadcast, media and entertainment news. She previously worked as Staff Counsel at the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council where she was instrumental in the research and writing of comments submitted before the Federal Communications Commission on various issues including Digital Television, low power radio, and EEO. During her tenure, Ms. Fofana traveled to Sierra Leone to negotiate and bid on a deal to privatize the country's phone company. Ms. Fofana's legal experience includes representing clients such as Radio One, and Lifetime and Showtime television companies.

Dr. Marvin A. Lewis, ’68, the author of several books and editor of two journals, ranks among the foremost scholars on Afro-Hispanic Literature in the world. He launched the Afro-Hispanic Institute that is unique among American colleges and universities.

Benjamin Mason, ’58, trustee at Bon Secours Baltimore Health Systems, and executive vice president of Plexus Com/Group, was elected chair of the Maryland Hospital Association (MHA) Board of Trustees at the association’s annual meeting on June 14, 2005. His term of office began July 2005.

Ashika Severin, ’03, has completed her MPH program at the Yale School of Public Health. She graduated on May 23, 2005.

Jamia Jester Shepherd, ’97, has joined the research department of the National Children’s Advocacy Center in Huntsville, Alabama. She is responsible for the program evaluation of The Circle Project, a school-based prevention and intervention program, currently being implemented in five elementary schools in Madison County, Alabama.

Christina D. Vaughan, ’84, joined the Municipal Employees Credit Union in Baltimore, Maryland as the Compliance Officer. MECU is a member owned, notfor-profit financial institution with over 75,000 members.

Lateef A. Adenekan, ’88, is Chairman & CEO of Lateef A. Adenekan Financial Enterprises, Inc., located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Wesley C. Wilson, ’54, received the Daisy Lampkin Award from The Links, Incorporated at the organization’s 38th Eastern Area Conference held in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 16, 2005.
