Lift ev’ry voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list’ning skies.
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us.
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Anthem
LIFT EV’RY VOICE AND SING
Composed
by
James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast’ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
The Alma Mater
I.
Fair Morgan, we love thee, so tried and so true, Our hearts at thy name thrill with pride; We owe thee allegiance, we pledge thee our faith, A faith which shall ever abide.
–Chorus–
We pledge thee our love, we pledge thee our faith, Whatever the future may bring, And thus our devotion, fidelity too, And homage we pay as we sing.
II.
Fair Morgan, as onward the years quickly fly, And thou livest in memory sweet. We bring thee our laurels whatever they be, And lay them with joy at thy feet.
–Chorus–
Author: Flora E. Strout
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way.
Thou who has by Thy might,
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God, True to our Native land.
Alumni OathofAllegiance
I hereby solemnly pledge unbroken allegiance to Alma Mater in appreciation for opportunities for development afforded me as a student at Morgan State University.
I pledge active membership in the National Alumni Association wherever I may be. Through association with fellow alumni, I shall ever do my best to uphold the ideals and traditions of Alma Mater.
I pledge as a citizen to exemplify the high ideals thus implied, rendering positive service to community, state and nation, and so to live as ever to bring honor and respect to Alma Mater.

hePresidentialChainofOffice
he Morgan State University Presidential Chain of Office is bestowed upon each President of the University at an official inauguration ceremony and is worn by the President at Commencement and all official occasions requiring the wearing of academic regalia. It is a permanent insignia of office and is passed down to each succeeding president of the University.
Morgan State University Presidential Chain of Office is cast in bronze with an antique patina and consists of a chain of 1½-inch medallions engraved with the names of the Presidents of the institution and the four periods and dates in its evolution: Centenary Biblical Institute, Morgan College, Morgan State College and Morgan State University. The medallions for the current and past Presidents drape around the front, and the medallions noting the periods in the history of the institution drape around the back of the academic regalia. Near the bottom of the Chain are two banners with laurel leaves, attached to two round medallions bearing the official logo of the University. At the bottom of the Chain is a banner, crested with laurel leaves, bearing the inscription President, below which sits the official Presidential Medallion, a 3-inch round medal with a double-faced design embossed relief with the Seal of the University and its colors on the front and engraved with the University logo on the verso plane. Below the Presidential Medallion is a banner inscribed with the name of the current President.
The Presidential Chain was designed by the Inauguration Committee for Morgan’s Tenth Inaugurated President, Dr. David Wilson, in collaboration with the Office of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, and crafted by Medallic Art Company of Northwest Territorial Mint in Dayton, Nevada, in 2010. It was donated by Dr. Clara I. Adams, Morgan State University Class of 1954, former Special Assistant to the President, and Mr. Wilbert L. Walker, Morgan State University Class of 1950.

TheMorganStateUniversityMace
The mace (Arabic, amūd; Latin, mascea) was originally a weapon: a short handle topped with a metal ball, its bludgeoning force eclipsed that of a club. A common sight in medieval armies, the mace also served as a symbol of authority, appearing on the seals of such monarchs as Edward the Confessor, Philip Augustus and Frederick Barbarossa. In academic settings, a bedellus (lay church official) processed with the mace during commencement; hence, it was adopted by colleges and universities throughout the West and, in the United States, is usually borne by the Chief Faculty Marshal in academic processions.
During its Sesquicentennial Celebration December 2016 through December 2017 Morgan State University retired its sixty-year-old mace and replaced it with a longer mace that can accommodate the names of additional Presidents over the years and that displays more prominently the insignia of the four major periods of its development: Centenary Biblical Institute, Morgan College, Morgan State College and Morgan State University.
The new mace, crafted by the Medallic Art Company in Dayton, Nevada, has a 36-inch-tall fluted mahogany staff with 14 antique brass banners encircling it, the first 10 engraved with the names and terms of the inaugurated Presidents of the University. The mace head is a four-sided mahogany crown that bears images of three iconic Morgan structures and, on one side, the seal of the University, all in bronze, and, at its top the traditional flame of knowledge. The base of the mace is adorned with a tiered brass foot. The new mace was designed by the Sesquicentennial Celebration Coordinating Committee, and it is a Sesquicentennial Gift to the University from the MSU Alumni Association.

TheDr.IvaG.JonesMedallionEmblem
Some colleagues and community friends of the late Dr. Iva Gwendolyn Jones, Professor Emerita of the Morgan State University Department of English, honored her as a scholar, leader and teacher, by extending as a gift to Morgan State University the Dr. Iva G. Jones Medallion Emblem, which is the conception of the late Assistant Professor Emeritus Samuel L. Green, who was one of the two designers of the symbol. The second co-designer, and medallion silversmith, was retired Associate Professor Kenneth Royster.
The Emblem fabric approximates in width the border of the master’s hood, is velvet and employs the University colors blue and orange. The detachable chain, which surmounts the emblem and helps to drape the wearer’s front and shoulders, bears silver mounts that hold the medallions in
Appraisers have assessed each silver medallion at more than ten times the value of the United States silver dollar, which the one emblem medallions which the Philadelphia Mint created exclusively for the Negro Commemorative Society (Membership Number 1043) display the images of African-American notables such as Crispus Attucks, Benjamin Banneker, Henry O. Tanner, Lorraine Hansberry, Mary Church Terrell, Alaine Locke and Ralph Bunche.
Annually, colleagues, employing University-approved criteria, select an individual to wear the Emblem. Those honored by this selection are persons who reflect vividly in their professional lives the qualities distinguishing the individual whose name the Emblem bears.

It is red satin accented with a traditional rosette and blue, white, yellow and green ribbons, representing the flags of the United States of America, France, Senegal and other countries with which Dr. McIntyre had contact in his diplomatic and academic careers. In the center front of the sash, a specially commissioned gold medal (struck by Charles Nusinov and Sons) features a world map enclosed by laurel wreaths and the name of the award.

TheAcademicDegrees
The first known degree was a doctorate conferred by the University of Bologna in the middle of the 12th century. Originally, the doctor’s and master’s degrees were used interchangeably, each indicating that the holder was qualified to give instruction to students. The bachelor’s or baccalaureate degree indicated only entrance upon a course of study preparatory to the doctorate or mastership. Gradually, however, the bachelor’s degree came to mean successful completion of one level of study preparatory to the higher degrees.
Today, there are more than 1,600 different academic degrees conferred by colleges and universities in the United States. The advanced degrees granted by Morgan State University are the Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture, Master of City and Regional Planning, Master of Engineering, Master of Public Health, Master of Social Work, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Public Health and Doctor of Business Administration.
THE DOCTORAL DEGREE
The doctoral degree or doctorate represents the most advanced degree conferred at institutions of higher education in the United States. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a doctor in the academic sense as “one who, in any faculty or branch of learning, has attained to the highest degree conferred by a university.”
There are two major types of doctoral degrees: earned doctorates and honorary doctorates. Earned doctorates are further divided into two distinct types: the research degree and the professional or practitioner degree. The distinguishing feature of the research degree is that it normally requires a lengthy scholarly dissertation, which is usually designed to constitute a substantial contribution to the existing body of knowledge in its field. The most important doctorate of the research type at institutions of higher education in the United States is the Doctor of Philosophy. The only other earned doctorate of the research type which has secured wide recognition and use by a large number of leading United States universities is the Doctor of Education.
THE MASTER’S DEGREE *
The master’s degree is an academic honor conferred upon students who have successfully completed one or two years’ work beyond the baccalaureate. A thesis and an oral examination are usually required. The word magister connected with a qualifying phrase was used among the Romans as the title of honor, but its present meaning must be traced to the time of the establishment of the oldest universities. Regularly organized faculties were not then known as they now exist in the universities. The whole circle of academic activity was limited to seven liberal arts. Those who received public honors in the completed studies, and who had already received the degree of baccalaureus (bachelor), were called magistri artium (masters of the liberal arts).
THE BACHELOR’S DEGREE **
The bachelor’s degree represents completion of a four-year course of study of collegiate grade and is the oldest academic degree used at institutions of higher learning in the United States. The degree of Bachelor of Arts was the first conferred in the United States in 1642 on nine young men, comprising the first graduating class of Harvard College. Yale conferred its first Bachelor of Arts in 1702; Princeton in 1748; William and Mary in 1753; Pennsylvania in 1757; Columbia in 1758; and Morgan State to George W. F. McMechen in 1895.
* Eells, Walter Crosby. Degrees in Higher Education. New York: The Center for Applied Research in Education, 1967.
** Sometimes designated as the baccalaureate degree, from the Latin baccalaris, “under the influence of,” and lauris, “laurel,” used as a designation of honor, distinction or fame.

THASUNDA BROWN DUCKETT Doctor of Laws

Thasunda Brown Duckett is a transformative leader whose personal journey and professional achievements embody a deep-seated commitment to financial empowerment, equity and access. As President and Chief Executive Officer of TIAA a Fortune 100 financial services company and leading provider of retirement and investment solutions Duckett leads with purpose, ensuring the organization fulfills its mission to deliver lifetime income and financial security to millions of Americans.
Appointed CEO in 2021, Duckett brought to TIAA a people-centered vision forged by experience and her desire to make an impact. Under her leadership, the company has expanded its original focus on the nonprofit and educational sectors to serve a broader population, addressing widespread disparities in retirement readiness and wealth accumulation. She is steering TIAA to innovate while preserving the core principle of financial dignity, ensuring that all Americans, regardless of background, have the tools and opportunities to build a secure financial future.
Duckett’s career has been characterized by visionary leadership. Before taking her current post at TIAA, she spent 17 years at JPMorganChase, rising to serve as CEO of the Consumer Bank and, earlier, as CEO of Auto Finance. Her tenure at Chase was marked by groundbreaking work to broaden financial access implementing solutions for underserved communities and advocating for systemic change in personal banking. Earlier in her career, Duckett also served as Director of Emerging Markets at Fannie Mae, where she helped expand housing access through innovative partnerships and mortgage products.
Beyond her executive accomplishments, Duckett’s leadership has made a broad cultural and civic impact. She sits on the boards of NIKE, Inc., Brex, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, Sesame Workshop, the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Economic Club of New York, New York–Presbyterian and the Dean’s Advisory Board of Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business. She is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Executive Leadership Council’s CEO Advisory Board, and Jack and Jill of America, Inc. In 2022, President Joe Biden appointed Duckett to the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), recognizing her steadfast advocacy for educational equity.
Fortune, Forbes, Barron’s, American Banker and Ebony have celebrated Duckett's achievements in business and finance. In 2021, she was named to the TIME100 list of the world’s most influential people and honored as a CNBC Changemaker. She was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for her trailblazing leadership and influence.
Raised in Texas by parents who instilled in her the value of hard work, education and community, she honors their legacy through the Otis and Rosie Brown Foundation. The foundation celebrates everyday people making extraordinary contributions to their communities an ethos that reflects her personal and professional mission.
Duckett earned her bachelor’s degree in Finance and Marketing from the University of Houston and holds an MBA from Baylor University. She resides in Connecticut with her family and continues to champion inclusive prosperity and ethical leadership on a global scale. JUAN E. GILBERT, PH.D., DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR Doctor of Science

Dr. Juan E. Gilbert is a pioneering computer scientist and nationally recognized thought leader whose groundbreaking contributions have shaped the landscape of accessible technology, computer science education and civic participation. As the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering at the University of Florida, Dr. Gilbert leads one of the country’s most dynamic interdisciplinary research initiatives, at the Human Experience Research Lab.
At the heart of Dr. Gilbert’s work is a commitment to designing technology that is inclusive, secure and reflective of the communities it serves. In 2023, President Joe Biden honored him with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest award bestowed by the United States for technological achievement. This recognition celebrated Dr. Gilbert’s development of Prime III: an open-source, secure and universally accessible voting system that has been deployed in multiple elections, helping to make democratic participation more inclusive and equitable.
In addition to his innovations in election technology, Dr. Gilbert’s research spans brain-computer interfaces, human-centered artificial intelligence, accessibility, advanced learning technologies, and ethnocomputing, a field he helped pioneer to integrate cultural context into software and hardware design. He has published more than 250 scholarly articles, delivered more than 250 academic lectures and secured more than $28 million in competitive research funding. He is widely regarded as a transformative educator and mentor, with a legacy of expanding access to computer science careers for historically underrepresented students.
Dr. Gilbert’s leadership in the field has been widely recognized. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Academy of Inventors. He is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In 2012, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, underscoring his lifelong commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
He now serves on the National Science Board, a prestigious appointment that enables him to shape national science policy. Dr. Gilbert also served as a valued member of Morgan State University’s National Blue-Ribbon Panel on STEM Research Expansion, which the University convened in 2021 to help guide its efforts to become an R1 (“very high research”) institution.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gilbert has received numerous additional honors. These include the AAAS Mentor Award, the Computer Research Association’s A. Nico Habermann Award and titles such as Master of Innovation (Black Enterprise), Modern-Day Technology Leader (BEYA) and Pioneer of the Year (National Society of Black Engineers). His contributions to both technical and community innovation reflect a holistic view of computing as a force for societal good.
Dr. Gilbert became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cincinnati in 2001 and is the inventor of Prime III, an open-source, secure, accessible voting technology used in numerous organizational and statewide elections. His groundbreaking academic and civic leadership continues to serve as a beacon for those seeking to use technology to build a more equitable and connected world.
Honorary Degree Recipient
BURNEY J. HOLLIS, PH.D.,
PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AND DEAN EMERITUS Doctor of Humane Letters

Dr. Burney J. Hollis is a revered educator, scholar and academic leader whose distinguished tenure at Morgan State University spans nearly half a century. As the University’s longest-serving Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and one of its most celebrated faculty members, Dr. Hollis exemplifies a deep and enduring commitment to excellence in scholarship, teaching and institutional advancement.
A 1968 graduate of Morgan State College, summa cum laude, Dr. Hollis pursued advanced degrees in English at the University of Pennsylvania, earning both an A.M. and a Ph.D. with concentrations in American and African American literature. His dissertation focused on Waters Edward Turpin, a Morgan professor and pioneering novelist from Maryland’s Eastern Shore, securing Dr. Hollis’ role as the foremost scholar on Dr. Turpin and establishing his lifelong dedication to preserving Black literary history.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Hollis has earned recognition as a master teacher, noted literary critic and academic administrator. As a Professor of English, he developed and taught innovative courses in African American literature, literary criticism and the humanities. His graduate seminar on Invisible Man and the Western Literary Tradition reflected his belief in connecting canonical texts with Black intellectual thought. His devotion to pedagogy extended to Honors Orientation and Great Books seminars, which inspired generations of students.
Dr. Hollis held numerous key administrative positions at Morgan, including Chair of the Department of English, Director of the University Honors Program and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, before leading the newly formed College of Liberal Arts. Under his leadership, the College launched new degree programs, including three doctoral programs (English, History and Psychometrics), expanded its journal publications and revised its general education curriculum to reflect African Diaspora scholarship.
He was instrumental in restructuring Morgan’s academic divisions, helping establish the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences as a counterpart to the College of Liberal Arts. Known for his clarity of vision and commitment to academic standards, Dr. Hollis authored the College’s first Faculty Operational Manual and led numerous University-wide committees, including Commencement, Convocation and Sesquicentennial Celebration, which he chaired.
His scholarship and editorial leadership have also been exemplary. In addition to serving in numerous administrative leadership capacities during his 48 years at Morgan, Hollis also established a notable record as a literary scholar. While publishing many articles and a book on African American literature and earning distinction as the nation’s leading authority on Maryland novelists Waters Edward Turpin and Sarah Elizabeth Wright, Dr. Hollis co-founded the Middle Atlantic Writers Association and served as the founding editor of the Middle-Atlantic Writers Association Review, producing more than three decades of critical and creative works. Under his editorship, the Review published 19 volumes, 34 issues and more than 300 scholarly articles by nearly 200 national and international scholars, a record for scholarly editorship at Morgan. His work on preserving the literary traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) has earned him numerous awards, including the Dr. Ruthe T. Sheffey Faculty Award and the Ford-Turpin Distinguished Achievement Award.
Dr. Hollis is widely respected as both a builder of institutions and a cultivator of intellect, best demonstrated by his work as a member of multiple scholarly organizations, including the College Language Association, the Gwendolyn Brooks Society and the Modern Language Association. His contributions to Morgan are incalculable, not only in administrative accomplishments but also in the countless students and colleagues he has mentored and inspired.
An esteemed scholar, principled leader and cherished mentor, Dr. Hollis embodies the Morgan spirit. His towering legacy of service, scholarship and excellence will continue to benefit generations to come.

ThePresident’sSecondMileAward
The President’s Second Mile Award was established in 1953 by Dr. Martin D. Jenkins, President of what was then Morgan State College, and the tradition has been continued to encourage and give recognition to outstanding leadership and participation in student affairs. It is intended that this award will go to that member of the graduating class who has made the most outstanding contribution to the campus community during his or her undergraduate days.
“Going the Second Mile” means doing more in any given task or activity than can reasonably be expected. It is hoped that "Going the Second Mile" will be characteristic of every Morgan State University student and graduate and that it will become one of the firmly established traditions of the university community. The winner of the Second Mile Award is selected by a committee consisting of the president of the Junior Class and Junior Class representatives in the Student Government. Organizations and individuals are invited to submit nominations for the award. Nominations are supported by a description of the individual’s achievement.

ThePresident’sAwardfor ExceptionalCreativeAchievement
The President’s Award for Exceptional Creative Achievement was established in 1953 by Dr. Martin D. Jenkins, President of what was then Morgan State College, and the tradition has been continued to encourage and give recognition to the expression of worthwhile original ideas among the students of the university. It is intended that this award will go to that member of the graduating class who has made an exceptional contribution of a creative nature.
One of the most important functions of an institution of higher education is to stimulate the development of original ideas. Although major contributions are hardly to be expected, certainly the techniques of creative thought and the habit of expressing original ideas should be developed during the undergraduate days. The budding techniques and habits so developed, it is hoped, will come to fruition in post-university years.
The Award for Exceptional Creative Achievement may go to a student who makes a creative contribution in any field or area. The winner of the President’s Award for Exceptional Creative Achievement is selected by a faculty committee. Departments and individual faculty members are invited to submit nominations for the award through the appropriate department chairperson. Nominations are supported by adequate description of the nominee’s achievement.

CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PASSAGE OF SENATE BILL NO. 354
ESTABLISHING MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

In its infancy, the Billingsley Presidential Administration championed the final battle for Morgan State College’s elevation to university status. The effort was conceived by the administration of President Martin David Jenkins, who served from 1948 to 1970. The Honorable Verda F. Welcome, a Maryland State Senator and Morgan College graduate of the Class of 1939, led the charge. Senator Welcome authored Senate Bill No. 354, which was signed by Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel and called for Morgan State College to officially become Morgan State University on July 1, 1975.
As we celebrate the achievements of our May 2025 graduates, we are reminded that educational opportunities must never be taken for granted. We pause to remember our for ebearers, who fought to open doors for us. They insisted that Morgan would have a better tomorrow for the generations that would follow. As we honor their victory 50 years ago, we are reminded that the battle is now ours to fight. And we must do so valiantly and unapologetically for the future of our beloved Morgan State University.
WE PROUDLY CONGRATULATE THE FINAL GRADUATING CLASS OF
The Class of 1975
