EPDS & VALUES

The American Angus Association is calculating and updating EPD’s on a weekly basis. EPD information is current at time of printing and any new data submitted between the print date and sale date could affect individual EPD’s. If your purchase decision is heavily dependent on EPD’s, please refer to www.angus.org for the latest information. Any changes will be noted on sale day supplemental sheet. HERD HEALTH

Routine herd health and vaccinations up to date on all animals. Bulls and Heifers ear notched and tested negative for PI-BVD. All bulls have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam performed by Dr. Pete Fulper.

GUARANTEE

All cattle sell satisfaction guaranteed. All bulls are guaranteed for one year provided he has been properly cared for. Buyer is entitled to credit or replacement.

DELIVERY

We offer free delivery on the bulls. If you pick up your bull purchase, deduct $75 off the purchase price.

BULL DEVELOPMENT

All bulls were weaned in early May and placed on fescue paddocks after weaning. They were shipped in early June to Wardensville, WV and tested using the Growsafe systems there. They returned home in mid-October. Ultrasound and yearling weights were taken in October. After collecting yearling information, bulls were placed on a maintenance ration of hay and silage. 30 days prior to sale, bulls were supplemented with a commodity pellet. Every effort has been made to ensure bulls are sound and healthy. We feel our development allows the bulls to be best prepared for the upcoming breeding season.

GENETIC ABNORMALITIES

The American Angus Association has identified genetic abnormalities and all potential carriers in our sale have been tested and identified. As carriers, they are not affected by the defect, but could have an affected calf if bred to another carrier. For additional information, refer to www.angus.org. Join us for our 10th Annual “Focus Now, Value Later” Bull and Female sale. We are looking forward to a great event and cannot wait to see everyone. This year’s schedule will follow like the ones before. Cattle will be available for viewing anytime you would like to stop in. On Saturday, April 26th, cattle will be penned by 10 am, Angus BBQ lunch will be served at noon and the sale begins at 1 pm. Come early and help us celebrate 65 years in the Angus business.

As cattle genetics continues marching forward and genetic lines become more segmented, we are finding it harder and harder to maintain a balance between those genetics and cattle that can perform in our environment. With that in mind, this year’s sale is really unique where we are offering a proven set of COWS that have not just survived, but thrived. The leader of this group is Lot 20 who represents the type and kind we want to produce. Easy fleshing, explosive growth and production unlike anything we have seen is a package we find hard to part with. Her first calf was our co-top selling bull in the fall of 2022 and every calf since has been a standout.

We are introducing her third calf, Lazy Acres Builder 399 in the catalog. As our next resident herd sire, his combination of traits easily puts him on top of many sorts. When you ponder the combination of Builder and sire lines like Tahoe, Top Cut and Rise Above, it is easy to get excited about the future. A future that can perform and thrive in our environment. Take advantage of this opportunity by purchasing one of the females carrying Builder’s first calf crop. Lots 33-36 sell carrying his service.

As we continue the balanced theme, this set of bulls $Combined ($C) averages 297, which would rank in the top 20% of the Angus breed. Combined Value ($C), is an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B). While we recognize EPD’s and Indexes as having their limits, we consider them a great tool in the decision-making process and $C is as close to a balanced measure as anything we have in our toolbox.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.

Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
