SEPTEMBER ISSUE Hello and welcome to our September issue.

Summer, it was nice knowing you! I can’t believe how quick the holidays went, back to school panic buy is almost done, and now we can relax and get back into some kind of routine...

With the nights starting to draw in, it can begin to get a bit chilly so we thought we would take a look at a few of our favourite coats for this season, see pages 80-81.

Now the BBQ is packed away (almost), and the slow cooker is back out on display, our recipe on page 38 will give you a start to autumn dinner ideas, and there’s a nice dessert on page 40 too!

Hopefully the sun will stay out for most of September though, and the heating can stay off for another month, we shall see!

The Bury St Edmunds Cake Decorating and Sugarcraft Club was founded 31 years ago by Andrea Davey and their evening meetings are friendly and consist of a varied programme of demonstrations and workshops including sugar flowers, modelling, Royal icing and various techniques using buttercream, marzipan and chocolate.

Members transform tasty cakes into masterpieces, whether a delicate rose on a wedding cake or cute animal on a child’s birthday cake their nimble fingers can turn sugar into something special.The club meets in the Committee Room on the third Monday of each month from 7.15 to 9.15 and is open to all ages and abilities from the complete beginner looking for ideas and techniques to the more experienced sugarcrafter wishing to share their skills. HEAD LICE 1 2 3 4 5 6

MYTH: Head lice are so small you can’t see them with the naked eye FACT: Head Lice are the size of sesame seeds. They may be difficult to see with the naked eye, but not impossible. They are best viewed in natural light with a magnifying glass.

MYTH: You’re more likely to get head lice if you have poor personal hygiene FACT: Head lice are equal-opportunity parasites; they live exclusively on human blood. It doesn’t matter how often you wash your hair. It doesn’t matter if you have dandruff. They are attracted to blood, not poor hygiene.

MYTH: Your child is more likely to get head lice than you are FACT: Children are more inclined to get lice because they engage in frequent head-to-head contact - over

secrets, games, sports - and close contact is the primary way lice move from person to person. And though lots of parents are alarmed when their child comes home with lice, there’s simply no way to prevent kids from getting lice and, as disgusting as they may be, they’re not a medical problem - just a nasty nuisance!

MYTH: Head lice can jump from person to person FACT: Head lice can’t jump or fly, they can only crawl. And because head lice thrive solely on human blood, they move only from person to person, never from another animal such as a dog or cat. The most common way for head lice to get from one person to another is via head-to-head contact. They can also move around via shared hats, combs, and bedding, but because they die within a day or two without human contact, this path of transmission is much less likely.

MYTH: It’s important that you treat head lice quickly, as they spread disease FACT: Head lice don’t transmit infections, lead to scabies, or make children sick. In fact, they rarely, if ever, cause any harm -- just a lot of annoyance. Experts suggest that the greatest harm associated with head lice comes in the well- meaning but misguided use (and overuse) of toxic treatments to eradicate them.

MYTH: To successfully treat head lice, you need to see a doctor FACT: Head lice can be successfully treated at home with over-the-counter lice- killing shampoo and diligent

combing. Once you’re sure you’re dealing with live head lice, over-the-counter (OTC) remedies like anti-lice shampoos generally work, but nothing is 100% effective. You must apply two applications of medicated shampoo, the second one seven to 10 days after the first. In between, comb hair daily with a special nit comb. Combing is the most important weapon you have to get rid of head lice.

MYTH: You can use vinegar or mayonnaise as home remedies for treating head lice FACT: This may be a TRUE OR FALSE - depending on whom you talk to. There’s no scientific proof that home

MYTH: You must get rid of every last head louse, or another infestation will occur.

FACT: Head lice and eggs in bedding, on towels, and around the house, usually die within days without a human

remedies such as mayonnaise, white vinegar, or tea tree oil work in getting rid of lice, but many parents say it worked for them. Advocates say that mayonnaise -- applied thickly and then kept on overnight under a shower cap -- smothers the lice, while vinegar destroys the glue that attaches nits to the hair.

Hydrate!

Cheap as chips, organic beauty tip number one: drink a lot of water! Just because you aren’t sweating all the time doesn’t mean you should stop carrying your trusty water bottle. Water will keep you (and all your parts) hydrated and luminous.

Help heal sun-drenched skin

If you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, try a fast-acting dark spot treatment serum to help fade and prevent dark spots, age spots, and freckles. The serum helps fade dark spots, reduces hyper-pigmentation, and brightens and evens skin tone. There are many good products on the market to try.

Don’t get burned

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can forget the SPF protection! Buy sunscreen that protects skin from UVB and UVA rays.

Make a natural moisturiser

Start with an oily, buttery base: almond, sesame, jojoba, olive, and coconut oils work well, as do cocoa and shea butters. Add aloe, roses, oatmeal, honey, ginger, etc. Many herbs and foods have amazing, skin benefiting qualities.

The right colour

Autumn is the ideal time to paint your lips a deep burgundy. Try out some deeper shades, be daring this season!

Fading fast

The Summer holidays seem so far away now and with that your tan that took all those months of sitting in the garden sunbathing to build up is fading away, and the pasty look is appearing, but don’t despair, just get the good old fake tan out and apply every 3-4 days for your skin to glow throughout this cooler season. Who needs the sun anyway?

Other Autumn beauty tips:

Exfoliate dry, flaky skin one to three times a week with fruits and sugar, or fruits and oatmeal.

Use a hydrating mask (made from natural ingredients, such as banana and chocolate, avocado, etc.) once a week. Use a cleanser that moisturises skin, rather than one that rids skin of its natural oils.

Buy lots and lots of organic olive oil. Place olive oil on problem skin areas (think feet, elbows and knees).

Local audiologist to showcase gold standard hearing care this September One local audiologist is offering her team’s expertise to the public for free at an event to encourage better hearing for people in and around Bury St Edmunds.

Karen Finch, Managing Director of local, family-run hearing care company The Hearing Care Centre, is passionate about raising awareness of good hearing health and wants to showcase the excellent hearing care service that her team can provide.

The Hearing Care Centre runs a regular hearing clinic from Mount Farm GP Surgery on the Moreton Hall Estate. To encourage locals to check their hearing health, The Hearing Care Centre team have organised a free to attend ‘Hearing Care Day’ at this clinic on Wednesday 18th September 2019.

The Butterfly Bar

S

ome of us are bar-goers, with the Moreton Hall Community Centre bar or the Moreton Hall pub being popular places to drink the amber nectar, as our Aussie friends call it. For our butterflies, the amber nectar is not just a recreational accessory, but a matter of life or death. Nectar from flowers keeps them alive until they successfully breed, keeping their genes cascading into future generations. Buddleia advertise themselves with their large spikes containing many small flowers each, all smelling attractive and dripping with nectar, so its no wonder that they attract butterflies from large distances. Over the last couple of months, those of use with a buddleia in our garden may have seen many Painted Ladies sipping the stuff of life from the buddleia, as well as the gaudy Peacock butterflies, the Red Admirals, and Tortoiseshells. Add

Small White and Large White to your butterfly bar customers, and that’s six species you would have seen if you looked carefully.

Now that summer is fading, its time to plan for next year’s butterfly show. There are so many varieties to choose from, such as buddleia ‘Miss Ruby’ which is compact for a small garden and has outstanding magenta flowers. Or there’s buddleia ‘Butterfly Towers’ which is tall and thin, fitting into a smaller space than traditional buddleias. It does help nectar production if your buddleia is in sunshine for at least part of the day. Combine one of these plants with a desire to watch the flowers, and next summer’s butterfly watching is assured.

Hopefully you will all know by now that My WiSH Charity enhances the care patients at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust receive. This comprises of: West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Community Hospital and community services in Suffolk.

We also run appeals and one that is still ongoing is our Forget-Me-Not appeal.

People with dementia can find new surroundings daunting, so back in 2014 we launched our Forget-MeNot Dementia appeal as an initiative to support them and make their stay in hospital more comfortable.

We created a 100-metre long memory walk, featuring local and national images to help patients reminisce and start a conversation.

We also transformed wards, purchased reminiscence machines, calm carts and pay for interactive sessions to improve their wellbeing.

LSS continuing to raise awareness......

The LSS Stall with Gwen Williams and Linda Allen LSS were pleased to be invited to support the recent annual Cancer Services User Group Forum, held at West Suffolk Hospital’s Education Centre. The successful event, attended by over a 100 people, included talks, discussion groups and a market place with various information stalls.

The LSS stall was very well visited and worked well in partnership with the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service who had a stall at this event for the first time. Watch this space for further news of LSS being out and about, raising awareness of both Lymphoedema and Lipodema.

A buzzy time of year

It’s the time of year when even more insects seem about. So taking care not to get bitten, or dealing with any bites ASAP, is vitally important for those with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. Using an effective insect repellent spray, you can get repellent bracelets and patches to help. If you are unlucky enough to get bitten, treat the bite straight away and, if swelling occurs, do contact your GP and/or the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service for advice and treatment.

LSS’s 7th October meeting

The speaker at LSS’s 7th October meeting will be Jo Wortley, talking about the Bowen Technique. This is a gentle rolling action over soft tissue to potentially create a signal to the brain. It is a non-intrusive approach with no adjustment or manipulation and can aid balance in the body. It can be performed through light clothing and is suitable for all ages. When Laura first started advertising with us, I can honestly say I didn’t really understand what food tolerance testing was all about! I have always assumed that I am not intolerant to anything so it would never have crossed my mind to investigate but, when Laura invited me to come along to find out more, my inquisitive side couldn’t resist. I booked an appointment to go along to the Self Centre on Moreton Hall which was confirmed by email along with some information and an form to complete to give Laura a bit of background about your health and any issues you may have.

Firstly, there is nothing invasive about the process – no needles or anything to worry about!

Laura was incredibly friendly and professional and talked me through the whole process. It is all very scientific – basically speaking, it works by measuring the charge that goes through your body using a pen-like probe

on your acupressure points on your finger. Laura adds in various substances and then measures the reaction it gives.

The whole process takes about an hour and you are given an information booklet with the results. I was really surprised about the foods that I had intolerances to – cucumber… peppers…dairy…wheat… beer…cigarette smoke… chocolate! Thank goodness I am still ok with wine and gin! After the food tolerances, you are then measured for the amount of various vitamins and minerals in your body.

There were a number that I was deficient in and a couple that were very low which has prompted me to investigate further.

Laura then gives advice on how you can substitute foods and how to incorporate additional minerals and vitamins in to your diet. She does offer supplements if you wish to purchase them from

her but also emails you further information if, like me, you want to get your head round it all first. With it being the summer holidays, I am yet to eliminate the intolerances from my diet but, once the children are safely back at school and normal routine has resumed, I intend to do so. The basic idea is that you cut out the foods that you have intolerance to and slowly introduce them back one at a time to measure how they make you feel. The whole process was incredibly informative and I really recommend you going along to find out for yourself. I am certainly going to start going through my family to get them tested as the test can be performed on any age.

Bicep Tendinopathy

Also known as holding the baby/holding the handbag/ shopping bag/briefcase syndrome.

We all get those times when we refuse to make two trips from the car because we want to get all the shopping in the house in one or, we are anxious to keep our handbag close to our bodies for safe keeping in a crowd or we are parked too far from work to go back for something.

With cities getting bigger, it is common to have to commute for an hour or two each day, squashed between others with no room to breath let alone hold your bag properly or set it down on the floor for a while.

Despite our mobiles and laptops getting smaller, we seem to be making up the space with other…..stuff. Gym bags is another – in the bid to get fit we need kit, clean kit, towels etc. This is all great but we need to be carrying it and loading ourselves in different, more beneficial ways when lugging around our belongings. This counts for those weekend-away bags too!

The Biomechanics We often hold our bag in our hand or have it dangle from our wrist (particularly if we have our phone in that same hand or keys). Our elbow is typically bent to around 90 degrees, tipping the same shoulder forwards and hunching as we try not to lose our stuff off the end of the hand; thus, we over-contract through the biceps.

This forward shoulder motion can also be due to not being strong enough in the back to hold ourselves upright effectively.

This results in increased the internal rotation (or hunching) of the shoulder joint – meaning we are constantly putting pressure and over-stretching the bicep tendon at both ends as well as putting tension through the muscle.

When we straighten out that elbow still carrying the load, we are still contracted through the bicep as we have had to hold onto load longer than we want to. (As we don’t want to drop it, especially if it’s a baby!).

Our hand becomes more turned inwards (pronated) – as this eases the pressure a little, so we spend many periods of time heavily loaded in this position daily.

Think about those times in the day where suddenly your bag feels heavier and you start aching and shifting your hold. How are you holding it?

Seeing a Therapist or Osteopath What would we look for l Slight bend at the elbow and the hand wanting to turn over toward the body when arm is relaxed. l As the biomechanics change, you might be tight through the chest muscles on that side, shoulder may be slightly elevated. l f you are desk based this may exacerbate a headache on that same side. Tightness through the neck (due to increased shoulder tension) on the affected side may flag up an ongoing habit of carrying the bag on the same side all the time.

Signs and Symptoms l Pain at the front of the shoulder especially doing press-ups or planks l Trouble rotating your hand from a “palm up” position to “palm down” l Tenderness in the elbow pit l Struggle to straighten your elbow l Increase in tension headaches especially on the side you use to carry bags or hold the children. l Tightness in or between the shoulder blade of the affected arm

l May get back ache on the side you carry your bag as you compensate carrying the load when walking. This is especially prevalent in parents who carry children as we tend to “hike” the hip on this side also.

Treatment l Ice can be used but this is a short-term method and will only dull the pain for a short while. l Change your bag – opt for a backpack instead. Typically, a synthetic material opposed to leather weighs less. l Lighten the load- edit your bags contents. Leave things at work if you can l Massage into the bicep can help lengthen the muscle and reduce some inflammation l Gentle stretching of the pectoral muscles and upper traps will help take some tension off the shoulder and neck l Strengthening exercises to help correct the mechanics in the shoulder and at the elbow.

So have a think, do you really need your tablet, book, all your keys, laptop, all the change and one litre bottle of water?

Can you get a smaller water bottle and re-fill it more often? Just take the cards you need for money.

This is a very general over-view of what a daily habit can lead too. Do not use this article as a method to diagnose yourself.

You know the funny thing about loneliness is that you’re not alone. You may look happy on the outside but it is what is on the inside that you find hard to talk about to others, even friends and family, who may have their own problems. People tend to back off which makes you feel hopeless and more isolated. Being brave and acknowledging it, by talking about it, you are halfway there. The issue here is how you feel about yourself which could be the start of a new beginning. Start looking at yourself, but with compassion.

Find out about yourself and engage with it allowing no time to feel uncomfortable.

Accept how you feel and connect with it.

See your worth and find out what brings you joy. Tell yourself it is ok to feel the way you do then make new connections through your own interests. Take it slowly and do not compare yourself with others.

If the people around you make you feel lonely remember you are you and not anyone else, you have your own choices as to whom you mix with and what you do.

By doing those things you will feel part of something again and find enjoyment.

Belonging to a support group is one way of meeting new people and making a connection. Building friendships is another.

Take a step forward and reach out to others in your position and be accepted as you are.

The 19th hole

Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month see’s us move into our last month of summer and what a summer of golf it has been.

However, in September we still have one massive golfing event to look forward to this is of course the SOLHEIM CUP!!

The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers contested by teams representing Europe and the United States.

The cup is played over three days. Since 2002, there have been 28 matches—eight foursomes, eight four-balls and 12 singles on the final day. This is the same format as the Ryder Cup. This year’s venue is the Gleneagles Resort, Scotland. Leading the European team on her home soil is Ladies European and Solheim Cup legend Catriona Matthew and for the USA the captain for the third time is Juli Inkster.

The USA currently hold the trophy, with Europe’s last win coming in 2013 in Colorado. So here is hoping that the ladies can get it done and keep the trophy from making the trip back across the pond.

If you have never seen this event before I would advise you to watch it, its an amazing spectacle of golf around an amazing venue with the best players on the planet battling it out for their team.

Coaches Corner – PUTT LIKE A TOUR PRO This month we have a look at putting and how you learn from some of the best

putters in the world. The guys from PGA LIFE 365 YouTube channel are going to highlight TWO ideas that you can try the next time you head to the course.

Many of us struggle with tension in our putting game, whether its over an important short putt and from distance and try to judge distance. Having tension in your technique will not allow you to perform to the best of your ability.

These TWO simple yet TOUR PROVEN ideas will allow you to lose that tension and free up your putting stroke for your next visit to the golf course.

FORWARD PRESS – Some of you that watch the golf on TV closely would have seen this movement completed

movement is when the handle of the putting is pressed forward towards the target and then straight after the putting is moved in the other direction. This movement is designed to take out getting stuck or locked over the shot and then seeing very robotic or quick movements in the putting stroke. GIVE IT A GO! THE HOOVER – Again this movement is used on tour most famously by Rickie Fowler. The trick with this move is to get set up as normal, then slightly raise the putter from the floor just before you start your stroke. This move is again there to get rid of any tension out of the putting stroke before taking the club away. GIVE IT A GO! Both of these points are used as triggers to activate to player into a movement.

Its important to have these points on all areas of your game so that you don’t allow external factors and pressures affect your performance.

As we are in the middle of the main holiday season we do not have a formal meeting in FULL PAGE FLIGHT LAB August. However, a number of members enjoyed a stroll and picnic at Nowton Park on 7th August. It was a little breezy but we all had a good time.

Our next meeting will be held as usual at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on Wednesday 4 September at 7.30 pm. There will be a talk by Libby Ranzetta on the subject of ‘It’s a Bat’s Life’, together with a raffle, refreshments and lots of friendly chat.

slow-cooked beef stew

FOOD & DRINK

Ingredients:

Olive oil for frying 3 small onions, each cut into 8 wedges 4 carrots, sliced into thick rounds 2 celery sticks, roughly sliced 200g chestnut mushrooms, halved 3 garlic cloves, sliced 1.5kg British braising steak, cut into chunky pieces 4 tbsp plain flour 1 tsp English mustard powder 4 tbsp tomato purée 330ml brown ale 4 Oxo beef stock cubes, dissolved in 800ml boiling water ½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce 4 bay leaves Seasonal potatoes to serve

Method:

Heat the oven to 140°C/120°C fan/gas 1. Heat a glug of oil in a casserole (one with a lid) over a medium heat. Add the onions, carrots and celery and fry for 8-10 minutes until softened. Add the mushrooms and garlic and fry for 4 minutes more, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, heat a glug of oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. In a bowl, toss the beef with the flour, mustard powder and salt and pepper. Brown the beef in 2-3 batches, then add to the casserole with the tomato purée and ale. Stir well and bubble over a high heat for 2-3 minutes. Pour in the stock and Worcestershire sauce and add the bay leaves. Bring to the boil, cover, put in the oven and cook for 4½-5 hours.

Check the beef is tender (it should fall apart easily when prodded with a fork) taste and season with salt and pepper. Serve with seasonal potatoes.

1 (23cm) shop-bought pastry case 250g (9 oz) rhubarb, chopped 200g (7 oz) caster sugar 2 tablespoons plain flour 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 eggs, beaten 2 dessertspoons semi skimmed milk

Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas mark 4.

Spread rhubarb evenly across unbaked pastry case.

In a medium bowl, combine sugar, flour and nutmeg. Mix well, then add eggs and milk. Beat until smooth and pour mixture over rhubarb layer.

Cover edges of pastry case with aluminium foil to prevent over-browning.

Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes. Remove foil from crust and bake an additional 10 minutes.

Cool slightly before serving.

This merger will give Ellisons a London base and a second office in Suffolk having established its Ipswich office five years ago. Ellisons now has seven offices in total, including its head office in Colchester.

Following the success of the Ipswich office, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, Ellisons has been keen to expand its presence in the county. Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

Thank You All - Again What great continuing support.

September is always a difficult month for the museum with many decisions looming. How many weeks left till we close, will we have an Indian Summer so we can stay open longer? What work do we need to organise for the darker months? Who will be our guest speakers for the winter meetings?

What is needed for the AGM in December? All these unknowns – and more.

Our thank you is two fold.

Firstly for all the support we had at the Echoes Day. A great eye opener in reenactment history and a formal memorial to all the airmen and personnel we fondly remember. A big thank you to the small group of members and volunteers who made the day possible.

Thank you to all who donated items (especially the raffle and Quirky Cakes) and their time.

The second thank you is for to ALL who give their continuing support, with visits on our open days and by appointment. Our attendance numbers are increasing month on month and again our years total is looking excellent. We look forward to meeting all our visitors – Sunday 10am to 4.00pm, and don’t forget the Tea Room with the great cakes!

Next Event On September 14th and 15th – Airfield ‘Fly-In – Visit the museum by air.

The North Weald Marshaller’s (guy’s who tell planes where to park!!) are volunteers who work extremely hard at airshows and similar aviation events. They are holding a ‘Fly-In’ of visiting pilots and aircraft to help fund their activities (expenses etc.). The Museum also receives a donation and will be open both to visit and purchase tea/coffee, food etc. We also hope to have a selection of visiting traders – books, models etc. Subject to the weather, we are hoping for some very interesting visiting aircraft – from all regions of the country.

First you need to make the salt dough… flour, salt, water, food colouring, and then sea shells, googly eyes, clear nail varnish (optional) and a glue gun. n Make up the salt dough by mixing 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt together, then add half cup of water and mix slowly. Add more water if requited in tiny amounts. n Separate the salt dough into 4 balls n Add different coloured drops of food dye and mix n Separate each ball into 5 and shape to form 4 legs and a head n Glue gun a shell to make the turtles back n Glue eyes in place n Use clear nail varnish to shine them up.

ST EDMUNDSBURY GARDENERS’ SOCIETY Meetings are an opportunity for all members to come together to share ideas, discuss problems, weigh up solutions and to acknowledge successes.

The members also benefit from and gain ideas from speakers on a wide range of subjects that they can then translate into their own way of gardening.

Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 7.309pm at the Quaker Meeting House.

Guest visitors are welcome and refreshments are served after the speaker presentation. There are up to 5 speaker presentations a year, 2-3 trips out and at least 3 bring ‘n’ share social get togethers.

In July, despite the best efforts of the weather, the afternoon social get together was a success and enjoyed by the members who came along and joined in. Karen Kenny, a well known speaker on the subject of gardening,

What to do in your garden in September..

September is a great harvesting time for those of us who grow fruit and vegetables in the garden. Nothing beats the taste of freshly picked fruit and vegetables but if you don’t grow your own then don’t forget a trip to the countryside to pick blackberries.

Tom’s jobs for the month..

Fruit O Pick Autumn Raspberries O If you are lucky enough to have one or two Apple trees then a sure sign that they are ripe is when you start to see windfall apples around the tree.

O Look out for rotting fruits on your pear, apple and plum trees. Pick them off as they will spread disease if left on the tree.

O Plant strawberry plants this month. Or use the runners to establish new plants O If you have more plums than you need, then freeze them by washing, halving and de-stoning them, before packing them into freezer bags.

O Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings to increase your stock of currants gooseberries and figs.

The agenda for our regular meetings with clients always includes crystal ball gazing to help them to scope out their future plans.

Obviously, finance and performance play the major roles but, as we often point out, their businesses are only as good as their people.

I’m happy to report that here at Whiting & Partners we practice what we preach and strive to recruit the right people. At Bury St Edmunds we’re celebrating the success of one of our young trainees, Emily Haines, who has scored a world topping mark of 90% in the latest Financial Reporting exams set by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

She lives in the Moreton Hall area and has been with us since leaving King Edward VI School four years ago. The road to qualification as a chartered accountant is not short and Emily now has two further exams in the Audit and Business Leader categories.

CHARGED UP Thankfully I’d loaded the car

up the night before. It would take more than moderate to heavy drizzle to dampen our holiday spirits. I’d downloaded some holiday music (get me!) and the road trip to Derbyshire was ready to roll!

Fast forward 2½ hours. We’d crawled through the A14 roadworks (wow, that new road is going to be incredible when it’s complete, it’s just as shame I’ll probably be about 97 years old by then). Our first stop, the glamourous and imaginatively named Grantham North Services on the A1 was coming up. It’s everything you picture it to be, only twice as dilapidated – although I’m not sure it said that on its welcome sign?

The primary job was to charge the car. As we pulled into the car park we spotted a row of a dozen white Tesla superchargers, gleaming in the heavy rain. I don’t think most of the Tesla owners wanted to be associated with us in our

Nissan Leaf, but one kind soul, recognising I was a bit lost, got out of his warm, dry, £100k car and pointed me in the right direction.

You see, some of you may not realise this, but ‘other’ electric cars don’t get those luxurious charging stations.

Our charger was round the back, in the lorry park, by the bins, a bit clunky and looking rather sorry for itself. However, it did the job. We had a coffee (which cost more than the fuel in the car), a toilet break and 30 mins later we were good to go.

Our planned lunch stop was just a few miles away at Belton House. An amazing National Trust property, which crucially, has a fantastic outdoor woodland adventure play area. Perfect to stretch the legs and picnic. We basically had the place to ourselves, as no other fools were out in this relentless rain. Still, we were on holiday and so in shorts,

wellies (I’d cleverly left those accessible in the boot) and water proofs we just got on with it.

Picnic in the car is always a big hit with the kids. Not sure why? It’s not my idea of fun, especially after a long drive, but needs must. A quick change out of wet/muddy gear, elbows and feet in every direction, and we were on the final 90 min leg of our journey.

Our destination, a beautifully remote house on a working farm came into view. The rain eased off long enough for us to meet the owner and unload the car. Everyone was wet and cold, but happily the adrenaline of exploring the holiday cottage was keeping spirits up. A few hours later, the kids all bathed and in their new beds, we slouched on the sofa downstairs. What are we going to do tomorrow? Let’s double check the weather… oh right. Now the hard work really begins.

CRICKET CLUB

Developing young players is central to Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club and this season two young players have joined the club with the aim of playing the game at a higher level, Daniel Moriarty has played a number of games with Surrey’s 2nd team gaining experience of playing against some of the country’s top players. Justin Broad is just 18 years old and is at the moment the leading run scorer in the East Anglian Premier League.

The photo shows Justin Broad taken after making 125 runs against Saffron Walden he later scored 118 not out against Great Withchingham.

Josh Davey who now plays for Somerset started his career with the club this season took the first two wickets as Somerset won the One Day Cup at Lords in May. Thanks to John Williams the junior cricket has progressed with large numbers of boys and girls enjoying All Stars Cricket on a Sunday morning, most evenings the Victory Ground has cricket taking place with volunteers helping with the coaching.

To date some 88 senior and 45 junior matches have taken place.

The season enters its finale with the Saturday 2nd team hoping for promotion and the Sunday 1st team top of the Hunts Bats Sunday League.

The next stage of the clubs development is a Scorebox which will maintain the Victory Ground facilities as one of the best grounds for sports in the Eastern region.
