Wow, what a lovely summer we have had!

August was definitely a lot drier than last year! But it’s back to school now, and as per usual, I will be doing the last minute school supplies shopping! It was so much easier when they were little and didn’t have an opinion on what’s cool and what’s not!

Then we can relax and enjoy the last bit of sunshine before the nights start to draw in. Maybe it’s time for some home decorating? – see page 60 for some bedroom decor ideas.

Autumn Skin Care Yes! You can finally feel it. The early morning breeze is beginning to chill ever so slightly.

Autumn will soon make its grand entrance. But with cooling temperatures comes dry skin and chapped lips. Before your skin starts to feel the changing temperature, prepare your beauty regime with these autumn skin care essentials.

Hydrate!

Cheap as chips, organic beauty tip number one: drink a lot of water! Just because you aren’t sweating all the time doesn’t mean you should stop carrying your trusty water bottle. Water will keep you (and all your parts) hydrated and luminous.

Help heal sun-drenched skin

If you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, try a fast-acting dark spot treatment serum to help fade and prevent dark spots, age spots, and freckles. The serum helps fade dark spots, reduces hyper-pigmentation, and brightens and evens skin tone. There are many good products on the market to try.

Don’t get burned

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can forget the SPF protection! Buy sunscreen that protects skin from UVB and UVA rays.

Make a natural moisturiser

Start with an oily, buttery base: almond, sesame, jojoba, olive, and coconut oils work well, as do cocoa and shea butters. Add aloe, roses, oatmeal, honey, ginger, etc. Many herbs and foods have amazing, skin benefiting qualities.

The right colour

Autumn is the ideal time to paint your lips a deep burgundy. Try out some deeper shades, be daring this season!

Fading fast

The Summer holidays seem so far away now and with that your tan that took all those months of sitting in the garden sunbathing to build up is fading away, and the pasty look is appearing, but don’t despair, just get the good old fake tan out and apply every 3-4 days for your skin to glow throughout this cooler season. Who needs the sun anyway?

Other Autumn beauty tips:

Exfoliate dry, flaky skin one to three times a week with fruits and sugar, or fruits and oatmeal.

Use a hydrating mask (made from natural ingredients, such as banana and chocolate, avocado, etc.) once a week. Use a cleanser that moisturises skin, rather than one that rids skin of its natural oils.

Buy lots and lots of organic olive oil. Place olive oil on problem skin areas (think feet, elbows and knees).

SOUTHGATE Commun SOS – Save our Southgate!

No, not our Community Centre nor Church, both of which are in good heart and shape, but our name. Local government bureaucrats are trying to change the name of our area from Southgate to Hardwick Heath – all as part of the merger between St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath councils into the new West Suffolk. Now Hardwick Heath is a very nice park and we are very lucky to have it, but as name for our whole area, it is not a very good description. Why the need for change? Southgate has been our description for many years and is a good description. Let’s keep it that way. Contact our local councillors: Richard Rout, Patrick Chung, Sarah Stamp, and Ann Williamson and ask them to leave things well alone!

Free hearing checks at Mount Farm GP Surgery

to help those with hearing loss Ten million people in the UK - one in six of us - have some degree of hearing loss.

It’s surprisingly tricky to spot gradual hearing loss as our brains are very good at compensating, so we’re not even aware of how much we’ve lost until things are quite far advanced.

The good news is that there are things you can do to about it. The bad news is that there are potentially serious consequences if you choose to ignore hearing loss, including an increased risk of dementia.

Local hearing care specialist The Hearing Care Centre offers award winning hearing care services from 25 centres across East Anglia. This year they are celebrating their 20th year in business and they hope to continue to raise awareness about the prevalence of hearing loss, its effect on everyday life and the potential dangers of leaving hearing loss untreated.

Audiologist Karen Finch and her team will be holding a free ‘Hearing Care Centre Open Day’ at their local hearing clinic at Mount Farm GP Surgery between 9am and 5pm on Wednesday 12th September 2018.

During the event they will be providing complimentary hearing assessments (usually £20), along with the very best professional advice about your hearing test results and discussions about possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are available by appointment only.

Bats and Woodland Belts in Moreton Hall

Appledown Drive is a good spot to look, and also try the hedges around the vicinity of Abbots Green school.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the light - tolerant common pipistrelle bats were recorded feeding for flying insects, with lots of records per night as they flew up and down past the detector. Mosquitoes, moths, beetles and flies were all greedily munched on the wing by these bats. this bat can be seen fliyinh, just as its gets dark, in many places on Moreton Hall.

The woodland belt is far more valuable for bats, however. It was used as a movement corridor by other species of bats, using it to navigate through the area from their roosts or feeding grounds to other feeding grounds.

Noctules and serotines flew high and fast above the woodland, catching big beeltews as they flew. Brown longeared bats, fairly common but very hard to detect, flew along the wood picking up insects from tree leaves.

There was also one call, not a clearly recorded one, which might have been from one of Britain’s rarest bats, the barbastelle. They’ve been recorded on Moreton Hall once or twice before, and now we know one of their commuting routes.

To see how bats used the woodland belts, a bat detector was placed alongside the woodland belt which divides the industrial estate of Bedingfeld Road from houses on the other side. It recorded for several days in June, July and August.

Dear reader,

World War one was one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race, where over 17 million people died and there were around 37 million casualties.

The Great War lasted from 1914 until 1918 and this year is the centenary of the ending of the conflict. Back in June we told you all about our upcoming World War 1 trail. Well, it has now been launched and is open for you to take part in all around the town of Bury St Edmunds.

The trail consists of eighteen pieces created by local artists and sculptors which represent their interpretation of incidents or objects linked to the Great War whether in the area of conflict or life away from the front line. They will be on display until November 11 , Armistice Day, and will then be auctioned off, so if you have your eye on a particular piece please get in touch with our team for more information.

One stunning piece that is proudly on display just outside the Abbey Gardens is Mike Well’s 7ft wooden Victoria Cross.

It has been lovingly created by Mike and one of his employees, Jon Andrews, at Mike’s business A J Joinery. The pair have spent countless hours making the 5ft medal that sits on wooden ribbon which is covered with material. This isn’t the first time Mike has supported us either, after suffering from a heart attack two years ago, he has fundraised for our Every Heart Matters appeal and our cardiac rehab department. This really is a breath taking piece so make sure you head down to have a look.

The Trail is raising money for our Every Heart Matters appeal which aims to raise

£500,000 to fund a new diagnostics unit which will complete the new cardiac centre coming to West Suffolk Hospital.

With heart disease being the single biggest killer in the UK, and worldwide and close to 15,000 diagnostic tests being performed each year at West Suffolk Hospital, around 450 of those being on children, this centre really can’t come soon enough. A dedicated cardiac centre will offer faster diagnosis and treatment, the best possible environment and the best possible experience for patients. It will also include a new cardiac catheterisation suite and will enable patients to undergo procedures not yet currently available at the hospital.

The trail really is incredible and definitely worth taking part in. You can pick up your information map with a suggested donation of fifty pence from the following places; The Apex, Moyses Hall Museum and the Cathedral Tourism Office. They are also available at The Guildhall, Town Council Offices (weekdays only), LP, Beautiful Beers, Casa, Pilgrims Kitchen (Cathedral), Abbey Gardens cafe and the Greene King Cafe.

We hope you have an enjoyable time finding the pieces across the town centre, maybe discover a part of the town or a business you aren’t familiar with and at the same time find out a bit more about this time in our history.

LSS is working Lepr LSS is proud to join together with both the West Suffolk Alliance Lymphoedema Service (WSALS) and the Ipswich Hospital Lymphoedema Services to support the Lepra Charity. LSS, and the two NHS Lymphoedema Services, are supporting Lepra by collecting old (clean!) compression garments for patient use in India. Please bring any old compression garments with you to LSS meetings, or alternatively take with you to clinic.

The charity works mainly in India supporting and enabling those who suffer with Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), sometimes known as elephantiasis. It is a parasitic disease and LF is the second biggest cause of long-term disability in the world.

In the countries Lepra operates, there are millions of people already affected by LF. LSS is supporting.......

The West Suffolk Cancer Survivors User Group (CSUG) is holding their Annual Forum on Saturday 22nd September from 0900 – 1300 hours at the Education Centre West Suffolk Hospital. They are planning to have a Market Place of local organisations from the local community who support cancer patients and their families and have asked if the Lymphoedema Support Group would be happy to contribute on the day.

The event usually attracts approximately 60 -80 patients, carers and friends and is a good opportunity to for people to meet with local organisations who support cancer

The 19th hole -

Welcome back to the 19th hole, August saw us crown our last major champion of the year and the rains have also returned after an amazing sunning spell across the UK.

This month 19th Hole will not be in its normal format, as there is one main focus in September 2018.

WELCOME TO RYDER CUP 2018 This event is ranked as the one of biggest and best sporting events on the planet, with thousands of people flocking to see the worlds best players battle it out.

This year I am lucky enough to be one of the people that will be travelling to France to watch the action unfold, to say I am excited is an understatement.

HERE IS HOW IT ALL WORKS TEAM SELECTION The European Team will comprise the first 4 players from the European Points List, followed by the leading 4 players from the World Points List and completed by 4 wild cards. The US Team will be made up from the top 8 in the points rankings with 4 captain’s picks RYDER CUP FORMAT Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of four-ball and one fourmatch session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.

RYDER CUP SCORING Each match is worth one point, with matches ending in a draw worth ½ point to each side.

The first team to reach 14 ½ points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 draw, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it.

THE VENUE The venue for this years Ryder Cup is LE GOLF NATIONAL GOLF COURSE. The Albatros course at Le Golf National is an 18-hole golf course in France, near Paris.

Designed by architects Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge, in collaboration with Pierre Thevenin, it is located in Saint-Quentinen-Yvelines, southwest of central Paris So the stage is set for the 2018 RYDER CUP – BRING ON THE NOISE!!!

Coaches Corner – THREE GREAT PUTTING DRILLS So this month we have THREE great drills that will help all aspects of your putting. This area as we all know is so important to good scoring.

This month’s drills are brought to you by YouTube channel PGA LIFE 365, for more on these drills and lots more content please visit their YouTube page.

This drill will assist you with STRIKE, one of the most over looked aspect of putting. Striking your putts from the center of the clubface will allow you to get better distance control.

Drill) Make a gate with two tee pegs either end of your putter (as shown in the image), start wider than needed and as you become more confident close the gap up. STRIKE PUTTS BETTER!!

Moving on now from STRIKE we will now look at START POINT, this drill allows you to focus on the line on which you want your putt to roll down.

Drill) Again make a gate either side of your intended start line, at first make this gate wide and as you become more confident close the gate up.

START PUTTS ON YOUR LINE!!

The last area is distance control; this is a simple drill that you can set up before teeing off that will allow to adjust to the pace of the greens for that day.

Drill) Set up THREE distances with some tee pegs, its up to you what distances you choose. We have set up 10ft, 20ft and 30ft.

Being able to consistently judge these distances will give you a great base on the course to judge putts that are longer or shorter.

CPSG’s members took to the waters for a day out river cruising along the broads from Brundall to Wroxham on a modern, comfortable, carpeted and centrally heated boat with wheelchair access and disabled facilities. Glorious weather for a trip, taking in lovely scenery and a lot of wildlife. The water was still and peaceful even though the waterways were busy with other boats passing and their occupants cheerily waving.

The atmosphere on board was very friendly and everyone got on well together, lots of laughs that made some good memories.

Long tables were set up for the picnic and refreshments were served by the crew, all volunteers. Lifts onto the boat and the facilities were all excellent. All needs for a variety of health conditions were well met.

The mini bus for the journey was upgraded to a coach with air conditioning and the driver very helpful, considerate and accommodating to all members needs.

For a first day trip out for members all went well with minimal fuss and they all look forward to planning the next one.

The time is soon upon us once again to hold our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 20th September at 2pm. Visitors are welcome to join us and if anyone feels they have time to spare to help us out during the year, to become involved and actively participate we look forward to meeting you. We fully understand what commitment and responsibility involve however being part of something and getting something back in return, certainly makes up for it.

Positively Crafty hold their next session on Thursday 6th September from 1pm-4pm and will be focusing on completing their Tea Light Jars. Life quite often stands in the way of time for ourselves. Crafting brings moments of calm in that disarray and an outlet to being able to cope. By being open to new things and using your imagination you can open up a new world of creativity and a kaleidoscope of colour and pattern to enhance your wellbeing. You can also surprise yourself that you can do something that you thought you could not. Join us and get crafty—you’ll never know unless you try!

Our August meeting was an informal games night with an evening cream tea. Members had a go at Curling, or there were less energetic card games, jigsaws, dominoes etc to enjoy. A selection of delicious sandwiches, plus cakes and scones were enjoyed by all.

BURY & DISTRICT BADMINTON LEAGUE New Players Needed!

The Bury & District Badminton League ran a very successful Summer Badminton Competition at Skyliner Sport Centre, in Bury St Edmunds with 10 teams competing in two Leagues over 10 weeks.

The Larks Division was won by Abbeygators and in The Linnets Div. DVE finished top.

The League AGM will be held on Tuesday 11th September 7.30pm at Bury Football Club.

League team matches for Ladies, Men’s and Mixed players are organised during the winter season and various League Clubs are situated in Rattlesden, Debenham, Bury St Edmunds (3 Clubs), Brandon, Newmarket, Stowmarket, and Haverhill.

Strawberry Gin Smash

A lovely refreshing drink to serve up at your end of summer BBQ

Ingredients: 1/2 tsp sugar 1 lime wedge 3 fresh strawberries, 2 hulled and sliced & 1 to garnish 75ml gin Club soda Fresh rosemary or mint sprig, to garnish

Method: Combine the sugar and a squeeze of lime juice in a tall glass. Muddle with the back of a spoon until the sugar is largely dissolved.

Add the sliced strawberries and muddle gently.

Fill the glass with ice and add the gin.

Top with a splash of club soda and garnish with a strawberry and a sprig of rosemary or mint.

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

Non-vegans will be hard pressed to notice the difference between these and their favourite choc chip biscuits

Ingredients:

125g cold coconut oil 100g golden caster sugar 150g light muscavdo sugar 125ml coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 275g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder Âź tsp bicarb 200g vegan chocolate chips or vegan chocolate, chopped into small chunks

Tip the coconut oil and sugars into a bowl and whisk until completely combined, then whisk in the coconut milk and vanilla. Tip the flour, baking powder, bicarb and a good pinch of flaky sea salt into the mix to make a thick batter, then fold through the chocolate chips. Chill the batter for at least 1hr. Can be made 2 days ahead.

Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a couple of baking sheets with baking parchment, then scoop or roll plum-sized balls of the dough and place them on the baking sheets about 2cm apart. Flatten ever so slightly and sprinkle with a bit more flaky salt if you want. Cook on the middle shelf for 12-15 mins, turning the tray once, until the cookies have spread and are golden but still soft in the middle. Leave to cool slightly, then lift the cookies onto a cooling rack while you bake another batch. Will keep in a biscuit jar for up to 3 days.

Tomato, Red Wine & Chorizo Risotto Topped with Parmesan & fresh parsley Ingredients:

Method:

Olive oil 2 shallots 1 clove of garlic 80g higher-welfare chorizo ½ a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley , (15g) 750ml–1 litre of organic chicken or vegetable stock 1 x 400 g tin of quality plum tomatoes 300g risotto rice 200ml red wine 50g Parmesan cheese , plus extra to serve

Peel and finely chop the shallots and garlic, finely chop the chorizo, then pick and finely chop the parsley leaves, finely chopping the stalks.

Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a wide, shallow pan. Add the parsley stalks, shallot, garlic and chorizo to the heated oil and cook over a mediumhigh heat for about 5 minutes, or until the shallot is softened and the chorizo is beginning to crisp.

In another pan, heat the stock with the tinned tomatoes. Add the rice to the shallot mixture and stir to coat the grains. Cook over a high heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the grains have cracked and are slightly translucent at the tips, then pour in the red wine.

Stir well and cook until almost all the wine has evaporated. Add the hot stock and tomato mixture, ladle by ladle, stirring well with each addition, and only adding more when the previous ladle is almost fully absorbed.

You may not need all of the mixture, or you may need to top it up with a little water.

The rice should be tender but with a little bite in the middle. When it’s cooked, add one last ladle of liquid.

Finely grate the Parmesan, then add to the pan with some seasoning. Stir well, take off the heat and cover. Leave for 5 minutes or so before stirring again, tasting and adjusting the seasoning, if necessary.

Serve topped with extra grated Parmesan and the chopped parsley leaves.

Tomatoes, provide you with ample amounts of a powerful antioxidant known as lycopene. The lycopene is best absorbed when combined with fat, so salad dressing on raw tomatoes or a little olive oil in spaghetti sauce is helpful.

Family holidays. A time to

have fun with your nearest and dearest, enjoying quality time together, making beautiful memories.

Either that or just survive, returning without throttling each other?

A ‘holiday’ means something slightly different for all of us. Broadly speaking I think I can split them into three very generic groups.

• First off you have - ‘theme parks’. These holidays are all about the excitement for the kids, living out their wildest dreams.

What could be better?

• Secondly there are ‘beach’. These usually involve a lot of relaxation for the adults and crazy fun kids clubs for the little ones. Everyone is happy.

• Last but not least, you have - ‘farm stays’.

These are not relaxing and do not involve any theme parks or bespoke children’s activities. You make your own ‘fun’.

I do? Yes, so our week in Lincolnshire was based out of a barn conversion, in a field, up a long track.

Self catering cottage rental is not the lottery it once was, where your entire booking was done on the basis of a postage stamp size picture and a 20 word description in a brochure.

However, we deliberately didn’t tell the kids too much about the place, so the initial excitement of looking around the barn was still huge. Beds allocated and basic provisions unpacked and we were all set for the week.

Aside from obtaining a free charge for the car, my primary aim of the week was to hammer the hell out of the National Trust membership card. Visiting so many historic houses and castles in a week that they all blurred into one is a sign that this mission was a success. The kids dutifully did the trails and activity sheets at all of them, with surprisingly few objections. Clearly the play

areas and ice creams were their highlights, but I can forgive them that.

Other highs (for the kids at least) in our week included picking fruit, dancing in the rain, finding a composting toilet in the woods, and making bread out of flour bought at the water mill down the road. Oh, and lets not forget the wasp avoiding picnic in the car, they always love that.

We (the adults) also enjoyed all of the above, with perhaps the trek around Lincoln castle ramparts in the drizzle and my near death experience during a 20 mile training run, the other key accomplishments of note during the week.

A fantastic week was had.

Yet, by the last night we were all looking forward to home. There is nothing quite like getting back to your own bed after a holiday. Routine. Surely that’s what we all crave isn’t it? Or maybe it’s just me?

If you are passionate about working with animals and helping to improve their welfare, a career in veterinary nursing could be for you.

Well-trained veterinary nursing teams are key to the successful daily running of veterinary practices. The responsibilities of the veterinary nursing team are extremely varied and they are faced with new challenges every day. It is a diverse role that includes working as part of a team, as well as communicating with pet owners and carers. As such, excellent communication skills as well as the ability to work well a part of a team, are vital for a veterinary nurse.

At all times the nursing team does what is best for the animals entrusted to their care. They provide 2- hour nursing to hospitalised patients, assist with anaesthesia, operations and postoperative care as well as working in the practice pharmacy and laboratory. In addition, veterinary nursing staff have an important role in giving healthcare advice and demonstrating to owners techniques and methods to improve animal care and welfare. A career in veterinary nursing is physically and emotionally demanding, but at the same time, extremely rewarding. Many nurses say that the most satisfying part of being a veterinary nurse is helping animals to recover either from surgery or an illness and then seeing them reunited with their delighted owners and able to go home well again.

Veterinary nursing is a lifelong career with many options for progression and specialisation. These include equine nursing, theatre nursing, animal training and behaviour, emergency and critical care, medical and surgical nursing as well as management, education and training. Training as a veterinary nurse can also lead on to variety of other careers with animals as well as industry.

If you are enthusiastic, caring and a good communicator who enjoys working with animals, a career in veterinary nursing could be for you.

Central College of Animal Studies (CCOAS) specialises in courses for veterinary professionals and has centres in Suffolk, Kent and Somerset. Students from Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk attend classes at the Ipswich centre and do their practical training at local veterinary practices. Local practice, Moreton Hall Veterinary Centre, is a CCOAS and RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) authorised veterinary training practice with an excellent reputation and commitment to high standards of care, and a great place to learn the art and science of veterinary nursing.

I’m Michelle and I own the crafty foxes. I run adult and children’s workshops, children’s crafty parties, after school clubs, hen-dos and a wedding/events mobile crafty creche.

This months make is a cheap and cheerful hoopla game You will need 5 empty plastic bottles, 5 x different acrylic paints, spray paint for lids and 4 pipe cleaners 2 of each different colour.

• Take off the lids and spray them a nice colour, I used gold • Squirt some paint into the bottle. Once lid has dried put it on tightly and shake bottle to disperse paint everywhere • Do this for all 5 colours • Tip bottle upside down and leave on a rack over newspaper for excess paint to drip out.

• Leave to dry • Place some sand or loose stones in base of bottle to weigh it down • Attach 2 pipecleaners together and wrap around a large drinks bottle to get a circle. Wind the alternate colour around. Or use an old bangle.

• Set out the bottles stand well back and try and hoopla them!

With its clusters of small, tubular, pastel-coloured flowers that are often fragrant and sepals that are usually red or bronze an Abelia makes a welcome addition to a garden. Ideally you want well-drained soils and place in full sun. An Abelia Grandiflora is hardy in most areas but if you have a more sheltered area put it there. With this in mind it makes a fine wall shrub and the mass of small, fragrant flowers attract bees and butterflies. A little light pruning after flowering will keep it in check but the best time to prune is spring and then you can remove a few of the older stems and tidy up the shrub. If they get very overgrown, they can be pruned hard in spring, but this will reduce flowering for a year.

SEPTEMBER’S 5 FOOD WASTE REDUCTION TIPS W

e are not used to this record breaking summer’s heat or how to deal with it.

High temperatures mean more of our food goes off, so this month we give a few ideas to help reduce food waste and keep food bills as low as possible. If you have any other ideas to help save food we would love to hear from you!

1 Many of us don’t store food in the right place To keep food fresh for longer you need to store bread in a cupboard or bread bin, keep fruit in the fridge (but not bananas), and always store potatoes in a cool dark place.

3 Prevent soft fruit or salad leaves from going off Add some sugar and lemon juice to any soft fruit, place in the fridge to keep for another 2 days.

Put salad leaves into a sealed container with a sheet of kitchen roll and store in the fridge.

2 Freeze left over wine and pesto for future use A centimetre or two of wine left in the bottle? A half used jar of pesto that you don’t want to go off? Then try freezing them into cubes (in an old ice-cube tray) for later use in cooking.

4 A simple test to check if eggs have gone off

Put eggs into a bowl of water, if they sink they’re fine, if they float don’t eat them! Eggs can also be frozen by breaking into a bowl, beating until blended and put in a (date labelled) airtight container.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum Time Flies When I previewed this coming season in March the summer had a few ‘unknowns, especial how our attendance figures would be (and the weather). SOUTHGATE CHURCH WEDNESDAY GANG IS ON THE MOVE! Wednesday Gang has been a popular after school club for children age 6 – 9 for more than 36 years. It has been a great privilege to spend time with 100’s of children doing crafts, playing games, telling Bible stories and having fun together.

We have decided it is time for a change, so from this September, Wednesday Gang will be taking place in Hardwick Primary School in the form of a lunch time club.

This will give more children a chance to access this group, and children who find lunch times in the playground a bit overwhelming, may find it a welcoming place to be, and make friends.

We will be starting on Wednesday 12 September. Years 1 and 2 will come at 12.30 until 1pm, and years 3 and 4 will come at 1pm until 1.30. Alison Burgess (the Church’s Family and Community worker) and Doreen Whomes will be leading this club with our existing

Wednesday Gang helpers coming on a rota to help.

We are excited about this big change for us and are looking forward to meeting lots of new children in September. We want to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped Wednesday Gang over the years and especially Hilary Harrington who started it all those years ago.

Our club for Years 5 & 6 children at Hardwick Primary is Rock Solid and meets on Mondays between 1pm & 1.30pm.

RETURN OF JONATHAN EDWARDS Jonathan was the first full time ordained minister of Southgate Church from 1983-1991.

A talented pastor, after leaving us, he went to the Baptist Church in Orpington. Kent, then worked as a regional minister in the South West, before becoming head of the Baptist Church in Great Britain.

He now works in support of a number of churches around the country; with a disability charity; and as an ambassador for Premier Christian Radio. We are delighted that he is returning to us on Sunday 30 September to preach, and to see many of his old friends.

I went to watch ‘The Meg’ with my 11 year old son who, weirdly, had recently watched Jaws so was really excited to see it. The film is pretty predictable and follows a format that we have seen many times before... dramatic disaster, in walks ‘rogue’ hero, saves the day and wins the girl with a few jumpy scenes in between!! It is about some marine scientists who are out at sea exploring a previously unknown layer beneath the sea floor and unwittingly release a megalodon which was believed to be extinct. The team then have to figure out a way to stop the ‘monster’ before it terrorises the world. Jason Statham is very good and is also pretty easy on the eye - he suits the leading role of Jonas the ‘rogue hero’ well. If you were to ask my 11 year old to rate the film, it would be an easy 10/10...personally I give it a 6/10. It was entertaining and the effects are good but I won’t be buying the DVD! 6/10

Don’t let the name of this film put you off...to me, the name suggests some rubbish spoof movie but this is not that! When I saw that Mila Kunis was starring in it, I was more enthused as I have really enjoyed her previous movies! The film is an action comedy which sees the main character, ‘Audrey’ (Mila Kunis), being dumped by her boyfriend, ‘Drew’ (played by Justin Theroux) by text on her birthday. She is understandably upset which leads to her discovering that he is in fact a spy.

He is then killed in front of her and her best friend, ‘Morgan’ (played by Kate McKinnon) but not before giving instructions to get his treasured trophy to a contact in Vienna. Audrey and Drew then set off on an adventure through Europe to meet Drew’s contact and give her the trophy. Along the way, they are chased and shot at a number of times by a various terrorists trying to get their hands on the flash drive hidden inside Drew’s 2nd place fantasy football trophy! The real question is - who are the goodies and who are the baddies and who should the pair trust? Kate McKinnon’s character, Morgan, is very funny and the perfect side kick to Audrey. There are plenty of laugh-outloud moments in the film which has a very predictable but pleasing ending. The token hero, Sam, is played by Sebastian Henshaw, providing the love interest which is the cherry on top of the cake!

This is a light-hearted, entertaining film that provides a perfect couple of hours of switch off...in my eyes, exactly what going to the cinema is all about!!

Building the roots of

At Ickworth this autumn we are celebrating our history of wood on the estate; how we use it and what is has helped build.

From Theodora, 4th Marchioness of Bristol’s role in securing Ickworth’s extensive book collection, to how our outdoors team manage our acres of woodland.

During September and October, visitors will be invited to explore the world both indoors and outdoors, from the books that were bound to last to walks on the life of an Ickworth Oak and how we use our woodland to help heat the House.

Children are invited to take part and become ‘Little

Rangers’ for the day by collecting acorns to be replanted around the estate. During half term, the children’s crafts will use the nature around it including conkers, pine cones and leaves, turning them into creative mementos to take home.
