New / Walk Run Routes in Southgate and around Bury St Edmunds As part of an initiative to help people be more active, Richard Rout has used some of his County Council locality budget to fund new 5k Walk / Run routes in Hardwick Division. One of these will be entirely in Southgate, taking in Hardwick Heath and the length of Barons Road, amongst other streets. The other route he has funded will take in the Horringer Court Estate and meet the Southgate rote near the Spread Eagle to allow a 10k route to be tackled by those who want more of a challenge! The routes are being delivered in conjunction with Abbeycroft Leisure and maps of the route will be displayed at the start / finish line along with distance markers along the length of the course to let you know how far you’ve got left.

The routes will be launched later this summer and some free running classes will be offered to get residents on track.

Crossing Feasibility Study for Nowton Road One of the contributory factors associated with school drop off difficulties at Hardwick Primary is the lack of a safe walking route from the east side of Nowton Road, onto the Nowton Estate and down to Hardwick Primary. With the County Council, Richard Rout has agreed to fund a study to investigate whether a safe crossing point can be provided on Nowton Road somewhere between the car park by the allotments and the junction with Steward Road. The study will look at ways to overcome some of the difficulties with the site, which include very narrow pavements that would make it hard for people to wait to cross while other pedestrians pass.

The results of the feasibility study should be back within the coming months and, if it is thought to be achievable, Richard and your other Councillors will be looking to raise funding for the crossing. If a crossing is provided, it won’t just benefit school children but all residents in the area who, at the moment, have to cross a very busy road with fast moving traffic.

Town Councillor Ann Williamson writes: I’m delighted to be involved with the Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw Project which has been funded

by Sarah and other Borough and Town Councillors. Starting this summer free rides will be offered to local people experiencing mobility problems and/or social isolation.

The rickshaw is a specially adapted tricycle that carries two passengers at the front and the idea is to give them the opportunity to get outside, to enjoy the fresh air and interact with others - the rider and other passers by. The riders will be suitably trained volunteers and the rickshaw has a battery powered motor to assist with the pedalling.

Passengers will be collected from their home or day centre and taken for a slow and chatty tour of the town.

SOUTHGATE Community COME ALONG TO OUR FIFTH ANNUAL COMMUNITY FUN DAY BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 7th MAY

The 5th Southgate Community Fun Day will be held on the Hardwick Primary School playing field, starting with a Bury-wide Year 1 football tournament kicking off at 10.00 (children arriving from 9.30.), with the main event from 11 to 4. This year will be bigger and better than ever with 5 inflatables, magic show, Punch and Judy, and the return of the ever popular climbing wall. Southgate Church is providing entertainment and fun and games for the whole family.

There will be plenty of refreshments – burgers, hot dogs, drinks, cakes and of course, ice cream in abundance. This is a great day out for all the family - we look forward to seeing you all again.

W hat’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School After an Easter Holiday break with some indifferent and disappointing weather we welcome children back to school… and guess what … the sun is shining and temperatures soaring! The summer term is always very busy and challenging, especially for our year 6 pupils who face their SATS week this month and we all wish them the very best.

With a recap of the busy few weeks before the Easter break the highlight was the superb children from Years 3 and 4 who entertained us with three performances of their production A Big Green Adventure (pictured).

The shows were brilliant, thanks to all the audiences that supported the children and your kind donations raised £131.86 for the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service.

We also supported another worthy charity, Brain Tumour Research, raising £185 from the Wear a Hat Day, with the huge sum of £1851.40 made after the Sport Relief Run we thank everyone for their kind generosity.

Other thanks must go to the FoHPS for another packed and successful Easter Bingo and to Firefighter Manning (Charlie’s dad in Hedgehog Class) who paid a visit to Key Stage 1 as part of their “Fire” topic. Congratulations to our Year 3/4 and 5/6 gymnastic squads that have now qualified for the County Finals in July and to all our football teams across every year group that represent the School every Saturday morning.

Dear reader,

After months of planning and keeping it secret, we are THRILLED to finally be able to announce to you our latest event.

Coming to Bury St Edmunds on the 1st September is…drum roll please…My WiSH Charity’s Soapbox Challenge!

If you loved the good old days of building go-karts with your mates out of old prams and crates, then this is definitely the challenge for you.

We are looking for twenty teams to design and build their own carts, which can be as creative as you wish (there is a prize for best soapbox, so go big!). You will then get the chance to race them down Mount Road in Bury St Edmunds in a bid to be crowned Soapbox Champion. We will also be installing a ramp and chicane to make your journey down a little more fun!

It’s not just all about the race though. We want costumes, dancing, team colours and company logos…the bigger, brighter and wackier the better. As already mentioned, there is a prize for best soapbox, but you can also grab yourself a trophy for best presentation and fastest time.

If launching yourself down a hill isn’t your cup of tea, then why not come along and spectate instead. We have coffee and icecream stalls available, or you could bring along a picnic and enjoy a fun day out.

Teams are being asked for a minimum donation of £250 but we hope you will raise more money alongside as all money raised will be going to our Every Heart Matters

Litter in the woods

T

he woods are a beautiful place every time of year. Whether it’s seeing the blossom on the trees in spring, or the rainbows of colourful leaves in Autumn, the woods are a great place to be. But this stunning landscape is being ruined by bits of rubbish being thrown in the bushes and on the ground.

Litter is an increasing problem in our local woods and it’s a problem that needs to be solved. Last month, I went litter picking in various Woodland Ways’ sites and was shocked by what I found.

Cans and bottles, packets and wrappers, every where there was something that had carelessly been strewn around natural sites and habitats. Even in places not so far from bins, there was litter.

It’s dominating our most natural, local places and affecting the environment more than you might think. It is the wildlife who sadly suffer most from our littering. Plastic bags can suffocate

small animals, cans can trap animals looking for food, and glass can injure wildlife in their own habitats.

However, it is not just the wildlife being affected; it is our own acts of carelessness that affect ourselves and each other. Litter is full of bacteria and is a threat to public health in more severe cases. It looks disgusting and smells bad too. Is this really what we want our natural sites to look like? If nothing is done, it will look worse for future generations. Litter is unacceptable and should be stopped.

During my litter pick, we filled over half a bin bag of litter, and that wasn’t even covering all Woodland Ways’ sites. I encourage all of you to take a walk down your nearest woods and see just how much of the peaceful landscape is being dominated by litter.

BURY ST EDMUNDS CROQUET CLUB Victory Sports Ground | Nowton Road

Our speaker for April was Rodney Tibbs, who gave a presentation on “Gardens Then & Now”. His talk started with how gardens were set up in ancient times. Evidence has been found in archaeological discoveries all over the world. We think that rectangular beds are a recent method of gardening but there is proof in paintings and drawings that their popularity goes back many centuries.

It all started with hedges, watering, digging and growing plants under glass and the different tools and equipment that have evolved in managing to grow things. We have all heard of Capability Brown, who designed over 170 parks in the 18th century. The examples of paintings and illustrations Rodney showed us depicted how gardens changed over time and each one had a story. In Victorian Times they liked to eat and listen to music in the garden, just like we do now. Some pictures had us laughing at what other antics happened in the garden. We can still enjoy historic gardens like Kew, founded in 1840 and Lambeth Palace Garden, founded in 1197. Bringing us up to date is The Eden Project that is very modern.

Would you like to play Croquet?

May has arrived and with it, we hope, some bright sunny days. Croquet players will be dusting off their mallets to get in some practice before June the official opening of the croquet season.

Croquet is one of the few sports that can be played by anyone who is mobile. It is suitable for all ages, both sexes, and one of the very few sports that men and women, young or not so young, can play together on equal terms.

The game is played in pairs or singles. 4 people play the pairs game. The object is to be the first to get your ball through a hoop and thus ‘win’ the hoop for your side. Partners work to help each other and frustrate the ambitions of the opposition - all done in the spirit of friendship.

The first side to ‘win’ 7 hoops has won the game.

In singles you play with your 2 balls and have to plan your own strategy. The game requires fairly gentle, physical activity, but a lot of mental activity as you plan to beat the opposition.

Bury St. Edmunds has a very friendly membership of about 30 members and we give a warm welcome to anyone wishing to join. The basic game is easy to learn and the finer points come with experience.

Spring clean

your skin care

Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to purge old cosmetics and skin care products. These products do have a shelf life. Old, outdated products can harbour bacteria and lose their effectiveness.

Purge Check the dates on your products. You may want to toss the following: • Anything past the expiration date • Products that appear dry or crusty • Anything that has changed consistency, colour, or smell • Anything with an SPF older than one year (SPF loses its effectiveness over time and it’s just not worth the risk.)

• Mascara older than three months.

• Old, dirty make-up brushes and sponges Exfoliate The cold, dry days of winter may be over, but your dry, flaky skin remains. Spring is a good time for deep exfoliation and cleansing. During winter, much of our skin is “out of sight, out of mind.” Long trousers, long sleeves, and warm socks may have prevented you from seeing the rough, dry skin building up on your feet, knees, and elbows. Scrub off that old layer of dry skin and make room for spring.

Transition Adjust your skin care routine to reflect the seasonal changes that come with spring. A few changes necessitated by spring: Switch to a lighter moisturiser. Higher temperatures result in oilier skin for everyone, not just those with a tendency to oily skin. It’s important to use a lighter moisturiser during spring. If you prefer not to switch to a new moisturiser, you can try mixing some rosewater into your thick, winter moisturiser.

Exfoliate more often. Depending on the climate and your skin type, you may need to exfoliate more often in the spring and summer.

Lighten up. For spring and summer, use a lighter foundation and lighter, brighter make-up colours. The dull, drab days of winter are behind you—freshen up!

Sunscreen. Sunscreen is important all year, but imperative in the spring and summer when more of your skin is exposed for longer periods of time. Stay vigilant with sunscreen.

Welcome back to the 19th hole and I think we are there, the weather has turned the nights are longer and season has kicked off with another amazing MASTERS tournament.

Congratulations to Patrick Reed, it was an impressive victory and what an incredible place to win your first major championship.

Rory had a good go for the title again but just didn’t have his A game on Sunday to push Reed down the stretch. However, with some of the performances given by the some of the worlds best it is shaping up to be a very exciting 2018!!

Golf hits our shores!!

May see’s golf in England, with two events on the European Tour being staged just outside London.

First we have the GOLF SIXES tournament, this is a new and exciting competition played in a team (Pairs) format over a shortened course. Secondly we have the flag ship event on the European Tour – THE PGA BMW CHAMPIONSHIP, held at Wentworth GC. These are both incredible events and a chance for your all to watch the worlds best up close and personal. If you get the chance I would highly recommend that you go to one or both of these events.

Coaches Corner – SHORT GAME MATTERS!!

This month we look another great short game aspect uneven lies. This month we are focusing on the down hill lie, the PGA life 365 coaching staff have a few important points to help you play these shots better under pressure.

Tip: Match your shoulder and body lines to the slope that your stood on, for this down hill lie you will have a lot of body weight in your left foot (right handed golfer).

Tip: Now that you have body matched to the slope on which you are stood on, its now time the make the swing action.

Again it is very important to swing down the line on the slope so that a solid strike can be achieved.

Lastly, when it came to choosing a club to play this shot it does change from person to person. All we say is that this type of lie will you will loose loft and launch the ball lower and practice this shot before playing it on the course so you know that what works for you.

Springtime awakens our inner motivation and activates feeling of hope and positive changes can make you smile. Spending time outdoors is good for your mental health and being surrounded by colour and the joy of new life emerging can be very uplifting.

Nutrition is a key part of everyday wellbeing and may also need a springtime boost to support energy levels.

Tuesday 10am at the Moreton hall health club: This is a HIIT style session which uses a mixture of functional training and body weight exercises to achieve maximum calorie burn. Plenty of jumping, sprinting and resistance work involved in this session, perfect for burning off an indulgent weekend.

Wednesday 9:15am at Great Barton Free Church: This is a circuit training based session targeting all main muscle groups using a combination of strength and aerobic exercises. Each activity is time based so perfect for all abilities.

Friday 11am at the Moreton hall health club: This is a strength based session. In this class we focus on large muscle group exercises such as: Leg press/squat/ lunge/pull up/bench press etc. A great way to tone the whole body.

Sessions are available to all abilities, focusing on time duration, it doesn’t matter what level you’re at, I just ask you to work as hard as you can.

Did you know that May is National Walking Month?

Abbeycroft Leisure are always looking to help inspire you to be a healthier, happier version of yourself and walking is a fantastic way to get active for free. Walking has a huge number of benefits. A 30 minute walk daily can reduce the risk of stroke by 27%, give you more energy and you can burn an incredible 7lbs of fat in a year by walking for just half an hour every day.

There are many ways to increase your steps in Bury St Edmunds. The Moreton Hall Run/Walk route is a 5k route, starting at the Ortterwell Road underpass opposite the Coffee Shop.

Simply follow the Run/Walk signs around Moreton Hall for an easy walk which allows you to explore your local area, whilst getting fit!

One Life Suffolk’s Health Walks are another brilliant way to get walking in a fun and social environment. Meet at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre on any Tuesday morning at 10:30am to join a free entry level walk, ran by Abbeycroft Leisure staff. The route is wheelchair accessible, dogs are allowed and there are parking, toilets and refreshments available at the leisure centre.

Finally, walking can be combined with some of the nation’s favourite sports to create a brilliant new way to enjoy sport at a slower pace. Walking football and walking netball are growing in popularity for a reason; they’re a fun way to get involved in these popular sports in a different way.

Walking football takes place at Howard Primary School on Wednesdays at 5:15pm.

The session lasts an hour and costs just £3 per session. If you’d prefer to try walking netball, head to Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre on Fridays at 5:15pm. The sessions are free and one hour long. There’s no need to book onto either session, just come along and join in the fun!

Spring Vegetable Risotto

This irresistible cheesecake is the perfect indulgence peanut butter Kick start for spring with this fans! lovely Risotto, great for sunny

evenings in the garden whilst enjoying a glass of wine!

Ingredients:

Method:

1 litre vegetable stock 100g asparagus tips 100g baby carrots, halved lengthways 200g fresh young peas, shelled 500g baby broad beans, shelled 2 tbsp olive oil 2 baby leeks, thinly sliced 300g risotto rice 1 tbsp pesto sauce 25g pine nuts, toasted

Bring the stock to the boil in a large saucepan, then reduce the heat, add the asparagus tips, carrots, peas and broad beans and simmer for 4–5 minutes until tender. Remove the vegetables with a draining spoon and set aside. Keep the stock simmering over a gentle heat.

Serves 4

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan and add the leeks. Stir-fry for 2 minutes until they are bright green, then stir in the rice.

Add 2–3 tbsp of the hot stock and cook gently, stirring until the liquid is absorbed. Continue adding the stock, a little at a time, until the mixture is soupy and the grains of rice are tender but still have a slight bite. This will take about 20 minutes.

Stir in the pesto and season to taste. Gently stir in the asparagus, carrots, peas and beans and cook for a few more minutes until the vegetables are heated through.

Serve in heated soup plates and scatter over the pine nuts.

A morning at the Infusions Scientific Cookery Class It is always tricky to find new activities to do with the children over the school holidays. At ICE cook school, they offer a range of classes for children and their adults to come along and enjoy together. I was very excited when I was asked if I would like to try one out with one of my children.

Typically, my eldest son chose to do the scientific course so, on a rainy Easter holiday Wednesday, we went along to discover scientific cookery.

The class was run by new chef, Lee, who has previously worked for a variety of top restaurants including the Ickworth. After a brief introduction to the class we made ‘potato pebbles’. It was a lot of fun coating the potatoes in the clay-like mixture which were then put in the oven on a low temperature to set.

There is a common misconception that scientific cookery is done using chemicals…in fact I thought as much myself. All the ingredients used are 100% natural and it is the reaction when combined that causes the science bit! We made a sponge using a espuma gun to mix the ingredients which was then cooked in the microwave.

The espuma gun uses canisters of CO2 which are released in to the cylinder.

We had great fun dropping mango puree in to algin which is a natural gelling agent and sets the puree to make little pearls to decorate desserts. We made beetroot jelly 38 | MAY 2018

(which wasn’t a personal favourite of mine) which was set in a thin layer in the fridge. We used this to cut out shapes and delicately set these aside to use in the final presentation of the dish. I do not think my son has a future as a pastry chef, however, as his looked more like splodges! Finally we made a chocolate mousse in the espuma gun again and a vanilla ice cream, freezing it quickly using liquid nitrogen.

This caused great excitement but, due to the risk, the children

didn’t actually get to be hands on with this process. Finally we went through to the café seating where we were able to sample our creations.

It was a really lovely morning; the class was fun and kept the children engaged. I would say it would be best suited to boys or girls from 5 to about 10 years old. I think I would like to try the pasta making class next…that looks a lot of fun!!

Electric Dreams

M

y latest domestic eco project is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to be the biggest yet. This time I’m focusing my efforts on checking the feasibility of ridding my family of our reliance on the internal combustion engine.

The key point here is I do not say I wish to rid the house of a ‘car’, merely the inefficient and dirty fossil fuelled engine that runs it. Yes, I am in the midst of looking for an electric car. Before you dismiss this as some sort of late April fools joke, I urge you to read on with an open mind.

There are many myths out there around electric cars (EVs), and I may address them in more detail at a later date, but my criteria for success of this project are fairly simply.

Firstly (and this is not specific to EVs), the car must be able to take 3 child booster seats

in the back. As any of you with 3 children will know, one could right a PhD research project on this issue alone.

With booster seats mm’s count, and 3 finding suitable seats in the appropriate age range that fit any family car is usually possible, but painful enough to put you off having a third child.

Secondly, the car must be able to fulfil my needs in terms of likely usage. I estimate over 99% of my return journeys are under 70 miles. That is to say we are talking maybe 4 or 5 journeys a year that would even come close to challenging the real world range of 150+ miles of the most likely EV choice.

With these journeys a 40min rapid charge at a motorway service station is all I’d need to get back on the road.

Finally, the costs and savings must add up. I can’t afford for this not to work. The maths on fuelling can be as complicated or as simple

as you make them. In essence, the very worst case scenario is 2p a mile in and EV compared to 12p say, in my current car. The reality is far better, as I anticipate utilising the solar PV on my roof to charge the car at home whenever possible, and other free charge points I would have access to. If I spent more than £50 a year on electricity for the EV I would be surprised.

So, there you have it. The EV revolution is coming, and I for one am trying to ensure it starts in Moreton Hall. In the meantime, if you see my wife, for goodness sake don’t ask her about this. I’ve already made her sit through several geeky YouTube blogs on the subject and to be honest I think she’d just buy an EV tomorrow if she thought it would stop me wittering on about the finer technical details of charging optimisers and such like.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum Small World – Local and International Great – we are OPEN !!!!

Our first weekends have already had increased attendances. 55 visitors on Easter Sunday started our new season. (The home made cakes were brilliant - and now Pecan pie has appeared on the menu – yummy!).

I’ve said small world because it is just that.

The visitors we are meeting are coming from all over the globe. We are pleased to be welcoming groups from the USA. Historians from the National World War II Museum in New Orleans will have visited us in April with another group later in the year. Local connections have been established with the son of a business man who operated from the estate buildings.

He possibly has previously unseen (by the museum) photographs. He remembers being with his father and brother on the site – we look forward to seeing the pictures.

Last month I indicated our focus on youth and already we have had a group visit of over 60 Scouts and their leaders from the 6th Bury St Edmunds and 1st Thurston Scout Groups. They were entertained to a presentation by Cliff Hall, on the history of the airfield, and then a tour of the exhibition.

Thank you to Wendy, Graham, Clifford and the other volunteers who helped with the evening. A big thank you to this group who made a very generous donation to us. You are all very welcome to visit as individuals on Sundays – just bring your friends and families. Our next group will be the Honington Scouts later this month. If you are a group, club or school who would like to visit please contact us and we will gladly host you.

Other organisations have already added diary dates. The Skoda Car Club and the MG enthusiasts will be joining us on different Sundays and we have also had interests from similar groups. The airfield is also planning to host visiting aircraft events – watch this space and we will inform you when we have the dates.

Due to circumstances beyond our control (the weather and sickness), our first April day was abandoned. BUT we will continue this month on Sunday 13th of May. We are looking for art enthusiasts – from colouring youngsters to sketchers and painters.

On the Second Sunday of Each Month we will have four categories.

Under 8 years and Over 8 years to 14 years – Colouring (we will provide the A4 pictures to colour).

Under 14 and 14 years plus – Open Art. Paint – oil, watercolour, Draw – pencil, ink, charcoal, There will be monthly prizes and some winning pictures will be here in the Directory.

Price: £14.99 hardback I can still remember the first stroke. The first time the paddle cut the water and pushed us on: pulled us into a new sparkling six dimensional world, where the trees were both above us and beneath.

Floating. At that time, almost two years ago, my friend and paddling companion James Treadaway had no idea about the journeys ahead of us. The maiden voyage along the Stour near Sudbury was essentially a wet run, to test the canoe that James had built in his garden – beavering away like a suburban Noah while his bemused neighbours peered over the fence, offering encouragement and the odd glass of orange squash.

Like me, he had no experience of being on the water but he’d felt compelled to make a boat; spending months bending, shaping and gluing wood, before painting the canoe’s handsome curves and

broad bottom a joyous nautical red, the colour of Mae West’s lips.

Yet, as soon as I’d finished that first short trip, I knew I wanted more. Back home I pored over maps, looking at the vascular bundle of rivers and tributaries spreading out across the county around my Suffolk home.

Although the place names the blue lines skirted around or cut through were familiar, I now realised that there were miles of landscape, or rather waterscape, which I had missed.

Even homely rivers that I had grown up alongside, The Stour in Suffolk and the Colne in Essex, suddenly felt unexplored and mysterious. If these rivers were national parks, I thought, we would have barely pulled into the car park.

A plan quickly began to form. First to re-explore my country, the places until so recently I thought I knew so well, to rewrite a psycho-geography made mean and narrow by the habits of land. But I also knew I wanted to go further, to paddle along the great rivers that have inspired, moved and licked the land into shape. I was desperate to go to those places where it is still possible to get lost, while knowing exactly where you are; a quiet exploration of everything from the smallest tributaries to stent-straight canals and thick arteries that pump towards the sea.

Over chalk, gravel, clay and mud.

Through fields, woodland, villages, towns and cities to experience places that might otherwise go unnoticed and perhaps unloved.

This months make is a Rainbow Wind Chime. It’s a really simple outdoor activity to jazz up your garden. Great for smaller kids to get involved too.

You will need a piece 6 sticks approximately 20cm long, some sand paper, acrylic paint, cup hooks and a piece of ribbon or string.

• Remove the bark and sand the sticks until they are fairly smooth • Paint them with 2 coats of acrylic paint using a brush or sponge • Attach a mug hook by screwing it into one end of the sticks • Hang them a few centimetres apart on a ribbon or coloured string • Hang across tree branches in your garden and listen to them chime.

We can’t win in England one minute it is freezing cold with rain and the next it is boiling hot! Also it’s my mums birthday this month! So big happy birthday to her!

Swimming pools!

I really love swimming but felt like I hadn’t been for ages, then recently I seem to have been going loads! I think we are really lucky in this area with the different swimming pools we have close by. I like going to Bury’s Abbeycroft pool as it’s quick and easy, plus the length of it is good for swimming lengths. It’s nice when I go with my family that I can choose between lane swimming or playing about. The inflatable octopus that they put out at certain times in the big pool is fun, but I spend most my time trying to get on and when I finally do, I then fall off! The baby pool is always super warm for the little ones and the bubble seats and flumes are good in the Pirate pool.

Recently we took my cousin to Sudbury Kingfisher pool, we all had a great time!

I really like that Sudbury has a beach like pool, that is great for the little ones independence so they can walk around and don’t have to be held the whole time. My brother and I really enjoyed the inflatable assault course, wave machine and slide too! A good pool for different ages!

Thetford Breckland pool is also a really good pool to go to as it’s different from the other two as it has a lazy river to float along in. One of its pools is also like a beach and has the wave machine too. You can also choose from the other two pools to swim in- one is a deep pool (good for swimming lengths) and the other is more shallow for little children.

The flume there is good fun too.

HOME + LIFESTYLE I was lucky enough to be invited by a friend to swim in the London Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park, Stratford for the ‘Extreme Aqua Splash’- it was so good, this was by far the best pool ever! When we walked into the area to get our bands on and pay for the swim we were all getting so excited and so close to seeing the pool. When we saw the pool is was so much bigger than I had expected it to be! Because the pool was 3meters deep everyone under the age of 16 had to wear a life jacket, but actually it was really helpful so that you could just float in the pool and didn’t use up all of your energy whilst waiting! The big pool had a large inflatable with lots of things to climb and try to get past like an assault course. There was something different to tackle everywhere you looked. In a separate pool there were giant lily pads that you had to try and run across to get to the end.

There was also a 5m inflatable slide and a 3m one coming off from the diving boards in the third pool. We had to climb the stairs just like all the Olympic athletes! We laughed a lot and had an amazing time- I’d love to go back and do it again!

If you get the chance to go to any of the pools I highly recommend it as they are so much fun!

What to do in your garden in May...

May in the garden sees the arrival of early summer and lots of promise of flowers and fruit to come and days sat in the shade reading a book and sipping something cool. At least that is what we hope though it’s not unknown for a frost to occur up and until the middle of the month. One of the best months of the year in the garden as everything is still very green and fresh.

At the end of May look out for Elderflowers in the countryside. If you have never done this before have a go at making Elderflower Champagne or Cordial.

This is an easy to grow compact shrub which will make a welcome colourful addition to any garden. Flowering from May through June it will reach a height and width of 5ft or 150cm.

Commonly known as a Broom it requires little attention after planting. Ideally plant in well drained soil but it will also fair well in shade or poor soil. If you want to keep the shrub down to size, prune after flowering in June.

BUBBLERush Exciting new family friendly event is coming to Bury St Edmunds This summer, those living in and around Bury St Edmunds will be able to join in with the areas frothiest, most colourful foam party.

Bubble Rush, sponsored by CurveMotion, is coming to west Suffolk for the first time and the event involves a 5km run, walk or dance around Nowton Park in Bury St Edmunds.

Taking place on Sunday 29 July, the non–competitive event is fun for the whole family and features five bubble stations with cannons blasting coloured bubbles covering participants in safe, frothy foam.

As part of the entry fee, everyone who takes part will receive a Bubble Rush t-shirt to wear during

the event and everyone who completes the course will also receive a participants medal.

Taking part in the event will help raise vital funds for Zest, part of the St Elizabeth Hospice family, which aims to help care for young adults in the region living with a progressive or terminal illness.

Josh Margereson is one young adult who will benefit from the money raised by Bubble Rush and said: “I may be a young adult with a serious illness but I’m still a young adult who wants to do the same things that others my age do. I want to hang out with my friends and take part in activities that everyone else does and the

money raised from Bubble Rush with help me do this.

“As well as that, I know that looking after me can be hard on my family sometimes so it’s nice to be able to give them a break too. One of the big aims of Zest is to be able to provide short breaks for people like me so that I can have some time being cared for my specialists but also give my family some time together without having to worry if I’m OK. “By taking part in Bubble Rush in Bury St Edmunds in July, you’ll really help make a real difference to young adults like me who are living with a progressive or terminal illness in this area.”

Tickets to the event are priced at £25 for adults (£20 if purchased before 22 May) with under 16s taking part for £12 (£8 if purchased before 22 May). Those under two can take part for free. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at bubblerush.eventbrite.co.uk

Random Acts of Kindness We all know that it is good to be kind. We probably think we are kind, but do we do the small things that make a difference?

I was in a local supermarket recently paying for my groceries when I realised I hadn’t even looked at the cashier. My mind was full of stuff to plan for the weekend and in my haste I had forgotten my manners so I apologised and was rewarded with a huge smile. “Thank you,” she said. “You would be amazed how many people treat me like a robot!”.

Why not set yourself a goal this month to do three kind things every day that you wouldn’t normally do and see how soon kindness becomes a habit. Here are some suggestions to get you started-

On the way home I thought about how sad it must be to sit there day after day helping others and not be rewarded with even a smile or word of thanks. I think about kindness a lot and how easy it is to make someone’s day. In 1982 Anne Herbert scrawled the words “practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat and a new philosophy was born. It’s an idea that really resonates with what we do here at the centre.

Random acts of kindness can be spontaneous, aimed at loved ones or strangers, big or small, a one-off or regular commitment, it isn’t hard.

8. Treat your friend to a class.

1. Say thank you as much as you can.

2. Smile at checkout staff and ask them how their day is going.

3. Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in the queue.

4. Stop your car to let others pull out before you.

5. Help people with buggies get up and down stairs.

6. Guard your words, and speak kindly to others and yourself.

7. Take your grandchildren to weekly classes and give mum some time for herself, we see this a lot at our mother and baby classes.

9. Take a box of chocolates to work for no reason and share with your co-workers.

10. Mow your neighbour’s lawn as well as your own.

11. Walk someone else’s dog whilst they are at work.

12. Volunteer doing something you enjoy. (We are hiring at the moment!)

13. Give away free hugs.

14. Check up on elderly neighbours living alone, invite them for tea or pick up their shopping.

15. Listen and give them time.

A Local Ecumenical Partnership between the Church Of England, United Reformed Church and Baptists Together

WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH BASED IN SOUTHGATE COMMUNITY CENTRE. COME ALONG AND JOIN US ON A SUNDAY – WE ALSO HAVE MID WEEK ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. On our estate we are really fortunate to have so many green spaces which we can enjoy like the ‘Pit Play Area’, Hardwick Heath and Nowton Park which at this time of year looks spectacular with its avenue of daffodils. These areas really show the wonder of spring & God’s creation.

At 9am every Saturday morning people from across the town come together at Nowton Park for ‘parkrun’ a FREE, timed 5km run which is open to anyone of any age or ability.

So on Saturday 17th March, which wasn’t a particularly springlike morning with a biting cold wind and flurries of snow some of the young people and leaders of Southgate’s Liquid Youth Group joined the other brave runners to take part in ‘parkrun’.

They were doing this as part of supporting ’Sport Relief’ so as well as running/jogging/ walking 5km they have together raised £557.20 which will go to supporting projects in this country and around the world.

In addition to us running we also had a stall with iced ‘medal biscuits’ which we were able to give out to all the other parkrunners.

Taking part in the parkrun made us think of the verse from Hebrews 12 v1 which says: “So let us run the race that is before us & never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way & the sin that so easily holds us back”.

There were times on our run when we felt like we wanted to give up, but knowing that we were supporting the work of ‘Sport Relief’ kept us all going to the end of the run.

Where new houses have been built they are earthquake resistant and stood the battering from the hurricane. Much more building needs to be done. Great Comedy at the

THEATRE ROYAL THIS MAY Coming up in May at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, a pair of shows guaranteed to tickle the funny bones. Richard Herring returns to the stage for the second instalment in his once-a-decade examination of ageing, Oh Frig, I’m 50! which takes a hilariously brutal and honest look back at how his life has changed in the last decade (Wed 9 May). Followed by Radio Active where original stars Angus Deayton, Helen Atkinson Wood, Michael Fenton Stevens and Philip Pope will reunite to perform classic scripts from the award winning BBC Radio 4 show (Thu 10 May).

Richard Herring has created thirteen stand-up shows since 2004, performing them for eleven consecutive years at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, usually with annual nationwide tours following, and he has been described by The British Theatre Guide as “one of the leading hidden masters of modern British comedy”. He is also recognised as a pioneer of comedy podcasting, initially with broadcaster Andrew Collins on The Collings and Herrin Podcast and more recently with high-profile comedians such as Simon Pegg, Russell Brand and Stephen Fry on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast.

Radio Active was a radio comedy programme broadcast on BBC Radio 4 during the 1980s which ran for seven series. Originally starting as a loosely framed series of unlinked sketches and songs, it later developed into more thematically focused episodes lampooning broadcasting genres and even sometimes a specific programme such as Ultra Quiz and Crimewatch. The new show will feature the original cast performing a pair of classic scripts in the style of a live radio recording.

Let’s start by saying, I’m not a ‘gamer’ but my 10 year old son is, so I took him and his friend along to see this thinking they would absolutely love it.

And they did, but even more surprisingly, I think I loved it even more!

It’s by Steven Spielberg, so you kind of know it’s potentially going to be pretty good. Set in the future, in a quite frightening prediction that all the world will be living double lives, but their main lives being lived out in virtual reality, it follows the characters trying to complete a ‘game’ - learning a lot about themselves along the way.

There are a lot of retro music and gaming throwbacks, which is why I think this may have appealed to me more than the boys! I loved it!

Being a horror fan, this was on my list to watch at the cinema, British made, I was a little dubious as to how good the effects would be without the Hollywood budget, but off I went, dragging my pal who is not so into the scary stuff.

A few familiar faces popped up, including the very famous Paul Whitehouse and Martin Freeman, both comedy actors, I immediately thought then, would this be funny more than scary? I was wrong, from the off, we were jumping out of our seats, luckily no popcorn in hand! We were both terrified to what was about to come next, the story is based on three individual character inexplicible hauntings, a Professor who is not a believer, investigates, trying to prove them wrong, but without spoiling it for all of you that have still to watch this film, it ends with a really weird but brilliant twist, getting your thoughts confused as to what actually is going on! Not at all predictable or expected! I certainly was gripped all the way through, but this film is not to everyone’s taste so I am giving it a thumbs up to paranormal fans but to anyone that likes more blood and gore, this isn’t for you. 8/10

Sybil Andrews Academy

Arts Society birthday celebrated with student project A secondary school has spoken of its honour after playing an integral role in celebrating the golden jubilee of the Arts Society Bury St Edmunds.

Society members teamed up with Sybil Andrews Academy to organise a artist in residency which saw mixed media landscape artist Alfie Carpenter work closely with students over a two-week period.

Hannah Nield, Head of Art at Sybil Andrews, said: “This was an amazing opportunity for our young students to work closely, and learn from, a respected and hugely talented artist.

The culmination of the work – an eye-catching mural around the theme ‘Our View’ - was unveiled in the school’s main hall at a special ceremony on Friday while Alfie also produced another piece to hang at Sybil Andrews.

“Alfie couldn’t have been more accommodating with his time and energy and both the mural, and his own work, are testimony to the success of the project.

Mary Payne, responsible for Young Arts coordination within The Arts Society Bury St Edmunds, said: “We are all thrilled at the success of this collaboration and the final pieces of work are simply stunning.

“We wanted to do something special to celebrate our 50th anniversary and we wanted to do something to encourage an interest in arts among young people, as this is one of our primary objectives.

“We were delighted to work with the school – which was an outstanding choice given the international fame of the artist Sybil Andrews.”

Alfie said he wanted to use the project to capture a moment in time and said he was delighted to be part of the “Sybil Andrews family”.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported the artist in residency and especially the Arts Society Bury St Edmunds for allowing us to play a part in their milestone anniversary.”

Mrs Payne also wanted to thank local companies Denny Bros and Jewson for supporting the project with donations.

CRICKET CLUB

As the season commences the ground is in terrific condition despite all the rain the grounds team of Bobby and Mark Flack along with their team of volunteers have produced playing surface.

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club will be running 4 Saturday teams and 2 Sunday teams, as well as a Ladies team in the T 20 League.

Picture left is Dominic Manthorpe who has earned a summer contract with Leicestershire.

He is also part of the MCC Young Cricketers squad. He will be an important part of the Bury St Edmunds team in the season ahead.

We also have a large number of junior players, boys and girls. We welcome new players at all levels so please feel free to attend matches during the season. There is no entry charge and the bar will be open for most of the playing time.

Junior cricket sessions for boys and girls are taking place every Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Fixture books are available from the foyer of the Victory Ground Sports Centre, please come along and enjoy some cricket in a relaxed atmosphere.
