Distraction Residents Burglaries Association I have been asked to relay the following information to you by Police Direct Suffolk. There have been several distraction burglaries in and around Bury St Edmunds over the past month. The police have caught one person and he is now serving time in prison, however there may still be others out there. These people target the more vulnerable in our society. They use different tactics to gain entrance to your home, so the advice from the police is as follows. 1. If someone calls on you stating that they are from any of the utilities companies, ask for identification and if you are not happy ask them to phone and make an appointment. 2. Keep your chain on until you are satisfied that they are for real. 3. Be careful if someone asks to use your phone for an emergency almost everyone now owns a mobile. 4. Do not let anyone into your home unless you know him or her or they can prove who they are.

We now have a newly formed Moreton Hall Residents Association it was formed on Thursday the 12th August. The Chairman is Mike Bacon; the idea of the association is to give the residents of Moreton Hall a greater voice dealing with things like housing, roads and other issues that may have an adverse impact on our way of life. Should you have any issues you can contact Mike on mike.bacon@ talktalk.net. I wish the association the very best and look forward to working with them for the benefit of our estate.

Youth Club This is a plea for some items we would like to have for the club, any games, dvds class 15 or pg for movie nights, a music centre and anything else that will keep children amused during the winter months, also books and craft material. We have had a few more parents come forward to help and many thanks to them but one or two more would be most welcome. As some of our youngsters are reaching the age of thirteen we are looking to open again on Wednesday for 13 to 17 year olds and this will require extra hands, so if you could help one night a month please contact me.

Smart Justice On Sunday, I noticed some boys litter picking accompanied by our PCSO’s. It would seem that they had fell foul of the law and this was their punishment. Having spoken to our police officer I was informed that this was a good way to deal with youngsters who are a little silly. They get punished but they at least do not end up with a police record. I think they will think twice before getting into trouble again.

Large Green Boxes You may have noticed a number of BT exchange boxes appearing around our estate, they are quite large and in some cases not very people friendly. However in some way we are lucky to have these as they are upgrading our Broadband speeds. Our estate was not due to be upgraded until next year but somehow they have started now. Hopefully we will reap the benefits. The breakdown is as follows: Copper –ADSL exchange---copper house up to 8Mb/s Going up to Fibre to premise up to 100mb/s + improved upstream rates. I am sure you are now all very knowledgeable about broadband now. Hmm. Until next time take care.

Feeding your garden birds Moreton Hall’s Monthly Nature Watch by Woodland Ways

Feeding birds in the garden is a popular activity - over half of adults in the UK feed birds in their garden. That’s a lot of extra help for the birds! Providing food will bring birds closer for you to marvel at their fascinating behaviour and wonderful colours. It will also reward them for sharing their lives with you. Feeding birds is also an ideal way to enthuse children about wildlife. Feeding can’t provide all the natural proteins and vitamins that adult and young birds need, so it’s good to use your garden to provide a source of natural foods as well, through well-managed lawns, shrub and flowerbeds. Although winter feeding benefits birds most, food shortages can occur at any time of the year. By feeding the birds year round, you’ll give them a better chance to survive the periods of food shortage whenever they may occur.

10

themhd

In autumn and winter, birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold winter weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. Use only good quality food and scraps. In the spring and summer, birds require high protein foods, especially while they are moulting. Black sunflower seeds, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, mealworms, waxworms, good seed mixtures without loose peanuts, are all good foods to provide. Soft

apples and pears cut in half, bananas and grapes are also good. Food on the ground should all be eaten before nightfall because rats are attracted to leftover food. You could also feed from different places in your garden to stop disease from building up. Keep your bird tables and surrounding areas clean and free from droppings or mouldy food, which can provide breeding grounds for parasites and bacteria. Water containers should be rinsed out daily.

Why not join Woodland Ways.. Why not join in with a Woodland Ways work party to help improve the Moreton Hall woods? No experience is needed and all are welcome; we’ll show you what to do. For more information please see www.woodlandways.org. uk, see the Woodland Ways noticeboard in the Community Centre, contact Nick Sibbett on 01284 723847 or email information@woodlandways.org.uk

Christ Church Moreton Hall

Jonathan Ford Contact The Church Office on 01284 725391

We have all been stunned by the pictures of the flooding in Pakistan, the millions of people who have been affected. It is hard to take in that tens of thousands have been killed or thousands more left homeless. It has been good to see how generously the British people have responded to this crisis. There is no need for Christ Church, Moreton Hall to open any sort of special account, we like you, will be sending our donations direct to the national charity which has been set up. It is at times such as these that we need to remember the fact of how lucky we are in this country. Despite the various things that go wrong, when you are confronted by wide scale human need, all the things that seem to divide us, politics, terrorism and indeed religion, fall into

12

themhd

the background. The one universal truth is that God is everyone’s Father, and He has no grandchildren. No matter where we are, we should all do our best to help each other and never be indifferent to tragedy. Jesus tells that the two great commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself. Perhaps these things are what we should keep in mind as we consider not only the future of our country in thea face of massive cuts, but also how we plan the future of our own community on Moreton Hall. For it is only when we love God with all our heart do we have the strength to love our neighbours as we would like to be loved. Moreover, it is only when we love each other as we should that will be know the love of God in our hearts.

We hope that all the young people will enjoy the Holiday Club which is on at the moment, Tuesday to Friday 24th to 27th August, as well as a special service on the following Sunday. We also hope to see you for two events close together – Back to Church Sunday on the 26th September after which there will be a barbecue and the Harvest Festival on the 3rd October. These are good times for us to renew our faith in God, and learn how to love Him as we should, and to renew our trust and friendship in our neighbours as we come to share together. With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Jonathan Ford

Going Potty!

It’s all a load of pants! Quite literally, potty training seems to be just that. As with many things in life, the anticipation was far worse than the reality. My son’s inherited supreme intelligence (from his father’s side that is!) means he has picked it up very quickly. The first day was a bit distressing for him. But let’s face it, if you woke up and found the entire contents of your underwear drawer gone and replaced with

anyone brave enough to visit us. Within a couple of days he had the potty pretty much sorted and rapidly moved on to conquer the big boy toilet. However, being rather small for his age he does need something resembling a roofers ladder to climb up onto the loo. Even now, a few weeks on, we remain on full alert for those three magic words ‘wee wee coming!’. Ignore them at your

pretty much overnight once you become a parent. I can’t afford to think twice about whipping the potty out and plonking a semi naked toddler down on it in pretty much any circumstance. I do of course try to retain some of the boys dignity, but to be honest, when he needs to go then that is very much a secondary consideration. By all accounts it’s how I was brought up and it’s not done me any lasting damage… I don’t think?

Thankfully the previous occupants of our house opted for laminate flooring throughout downstairs. I expect this was for sophisticated aesthetic reasons, but to for us they serve a very practical purpose, which a thick cream carpet would, shall we say, struggle with. much less robust looking alien garments, you’d be put out to. That said, I must confess to being slightly jealous of his apparent endless supply of colourfully decorated digger, train and even Bob the Builder pants. After the initial shock he embraced this new ‘game’ whole heartedly, excitingly showing off his new found skills (and smart pants) to

peril. Thankfully the previous occupants of our house opted for laminate flooring throughout downstairs. I expect this was for sophisticated aesthetic reasons, but to for us they serve a very practical purpose, which a thick cream carpet would, shall we say, struggle with. Potty training is a good example of how you loose all inhibitions

So it’s all going smoothly and it is great to be free of nappy buckets and bulky changing bags. Our washing machine for one is breathing a huge sigh of relief. Two long hard years of relentless nappy washing has come to an end. Actually, we haven’t got the heart to tell it yet, but its rest will be relatively short lived… but that’s another story altogether!

Economic challenges faced head on by local charity An area on the first floor of The Apex, the new public venue due to open soon in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, could become an extra space for events and catering, a report states this week. But it will need an investment of approximately £200,000 to turn the extra space into a business-like addition and equip the rest of building to reach its full income earning potential. The area was handed to St Edmundsbury Borough Council when arc developer Centros gave up control, says the report to next week’s Bury St Edmunds Area Working Party (11 August). The new public space will operate as an extension of the other open areas on the first floor but it does mean the council needs to install a new bar and all the other fixtures and fittings needed to make it a success. Initial discussions with potential hirers also suggest that a higher standard of conference chairs and tables will be needed for the rest of the building to match the excellence of its design and construction and the expectations of customers. Having this new area means The Apex can be run flexibly and hire out a range of different spaces out to various organisations at any one time. There will be extra overheads, such as the cost of heating and lighting, but the report says the additional flexibility means the area could increase the income already anticipated in the existing business plan. Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Cabinet member for Asset Management, said: “Every day we get closer to opening a building that is hotly anticipated as a superb quality addition to the region’s arts venues. The Apex will add significantly to cultural opportunities for generations to come. Investing in this additional space will help to increase the building’s flexibility, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it works to complement the other spaces in The Apex.”

The Bury St Edmunds based registered charity Focus12 has announced the appointment of Sarah Stamp as its PR and Events Co-ordinator. The move comes at a time when Chip Somers much needed government funding for the charity is due to be cut, making the need for fresh fundraising initiatives and raising the profile of the charity critical. Sarah has over 16 years experience of PR, marketing and event management, and is looking forward to the challenge. She says: “To be given the opportunity to do what I love, for a cause that I passionately believe in is very exciting! In these difficult economic times, when more and more families are in crisis, it is more important than ever to raise the necessary funds to keep this vital facility running, and I am looking forward to helping Focus12 do that”. Chief Executive of Focus12, Chip Somers, adds: “Although we are fortunate to have very loyal patrons and supporters, in reality we are reliant on fundraising events and donations in order to survive. In this tough economic climate, it is more important than ever to be able to raise awareness for the good work we do and to continue the support we give to those who need us and their families. I welcome Sarah to the Focus12 team and look forward to working with her”. Focus12 will be staging a whole host of fundraising events over the coming months, details of which are still to be finalised. Further information will be published on the website at www.focus12.co.uk or can be obtained by telephoning the charity on 01284 701702. Donations can also be made via the website. Improve your

Confidence

It’s all too easy these days to end up not appreciating yourself as much as you should do, there are however some very simple changes that you can use to improve your confidence levels and start living life to the full again.

Dress to Impress Clothes are important, and so is how others see you. If you feel comfortable in what you are wearing then you will be much more confident. If you dress confidently then we can feel very confident. Try dressing like the person you want to become rather than the person that you believe you are.

Take it easy You shouldn’t struggle too much to become confident, don’t get hung up on trying to do everything perfectly. Don’t allow yourself to set goals too high as this is a sure fire way to get frustrated with your efforts and get even more depressed. Give yourself some slack so you don’t get as frustrated.

Take a Chance

You should try things that are new and exciting, you might be worried about doing these things however you should try to do something new. This could be anything such as joining a new gym, bowling club, book club, or even simply enrolling in a new course at your local college. By adding new things to your life you can make your life more interesting.

18

themhd

Give what you expect to receive You should start by giving people what you want from your life. Make sure that people feel confident when you are dealing with them. By encouraging other people to be confident you should experience more confidence yourself.

Forgiveness

You need to forgive yourself for things that you have done in the past. Many people are like this because they haven’t forgiven something that they did in the past. You need to let go of any failure in the past.

Affirmations

You should make yourself confident by asking the right questions, you can use the right questions to make yourself feel much more confident. Ask yourself questions that you want to know the answer to, such as ‘what would happen if I did this?’ Your subconscious mind will puzzle over this question for a long time and report back when it knows the answer.

Pretend

Until you are really confident try pretending to be confident. Choose someone who you believe is confident and then model their behaviour. You could even try to become friendly with someone who is confident.

Be Gracious

You should be grateful whenever anyone does anything for you as you need to be peaceful. If you are peaceful and believe yourself then you will be more confident. If you are very good at something then make sure you are aware of what it is. Tell yourself that you are good at swimming, or maths, whatever you are good at.

There are plenty of ways to improve your confidence. Once you have improved your self confidence then you should try to find ways to keep it. Try it out today!

What can I do if my child is being bullied? If you suspect that your child is being bullied at school, then you need to trust your instincts. Schools are a great place for bullies to build their reputation of power and control. First, let your child know that you believe that something is wrong. Don’t try to “bully” the information out of your child. Be patient. Promise that you will not make the situation worse. Do not promise to keep it a secret, or that you will not report the problem. Do promise that you will not do anything without your child knowing what you are going to do. Be sure that your child knows that this situation will not get better on it’s own, and that appropriate adult intervention is needed. Second, contact the school, once you know what the issue is. Before identifying yourself, ask what the school’s policy is on keeping kids safe once they have reported a bullying incident. Do not give out any information until you have a satisfactory answer to that question. If the school does not have an

answer for you, ask when you can call back to get an answer. Do not go charging into the school demanding justice. This will only make the situation worse for your child, and will more likely embarrass him or her. Third, set up a meeting to problem solve your way through this situation with your child and members of the school, including the teachers and the headmaster. Your goal must be getting this situation solved, rather than seeking revenge. This is a highly emotional time for parents, and there is NOTHING tougher than seeing your child hurting because of another’s actions. Your child deserves to feel safe and welcome at school. Be sure to keep that the focus in the meeting. Finally, once a plan has been set, check in with your child regularly, and the school periodically. Keep in touch with all of the support people. Trust your instincts with your child, and let the school know if the plan is not working.

The benefits to parents

of an empty house

Admit it or not, all parents look forward to enjoying their empty house. After the kids have gone, the pangs of loneliness and nostalgia for the good old days eventually ease up. Then it will be the time to consider the many benefits for parents who find themselves alone together in an empty house. For the really creative couple, the experience can be a wonderful one.

First of all, you may notice that the strange and unfamiliar sound you hear around the house is silence. Maybe if you listen closely, you can hear a clock ticking. You can now relax together and call it peace and quiet. You may also breathe a sigh of relief that the so-called music of the loud rock bands with the funny names has mercifully gone away with your kids, and now you can settle down with Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Sinatra, Elvis and Ella. There is less need for parents to be rushing in and out of the house, now that it is empty of kids and their never-ending demands. No longer do you have to feed them, fix up their bumps and bruises or get them ready for the school bus. No more must you attend school sports events, go to the school

musical or go to parent-teacher meetings. No more shopping for party wear and shoes, or paying through your wallet for clubs and activities. And when they learned to drive your car, you no longer will have to worry about police tickets for going through red lights or driving 60 in a 30-mile zone. The old house will need fewer repairs and less cleaning. There will be no more footballs through windows, broken furniture, dropped dishes, messy rooms and rug stains to be cleaned. There will also be no more stacks of kid clothing to be cleaned every day, and the faithful parents, as well as the washer and dryer will get some well-earned rest.

The benefits for parents in a newly-empty house is that, at long last, you can spend time alone with each other, and maybe bring back what you had when you were first married. You can leave your bedroom door open at all times, and do anything together you choose. You can also escape out the front door together and go anywhere you please. The world is open to you for trips to anywhere in the world, romantic cruises, fine dining or just curling up together in front of the fireplace. So dont get upset thinking you are missing them, enjoy your peace and quiet till the grandchildren appear!

PIRANHA 3D

18

Director: Alexandre Aja Starring: Ving Rhames, Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell Prehistoric predators hunt in packs for human flesh in this 3D underwater gore-fest from acclaimed horror director Alexandre Aja. Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating piranha fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razortoothed residents. Piranha 3D stars Jessica Szohr from ‘Gossip Girl’ and Steve McQueen from ‘The Vampire Diaries’, along with familiar faces like Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, ‘Jaws’ star Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd of ‘Back To The Future’ fame - and Britain’s very own uber-starlet Kelly Brook.

Angelina Jolie stars as a top female super-spy accused of being a traitor in this fast-paced action thriller. Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA agent brought in to handle a routine interrogation of a Russian defector. Although the Agency are treating his claims with sceptical caution, he insists that a Russian spy is heading to New York to assassinate the US President. And then Salt is stopped in her tracks when he reveals the assassin’s name is... Evelyn Salt. Now Salt must go on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. But even when she does get caught, breaking free from a fast-moving police car holds little challenge for an agent who is as deadly as any lethal weapon. But as Salt desperately fights to prove her innocence, her entire life story and her identity itself are called into question.

emphasise enough the need to market and promote your business. With Christmas just around the corner – now’s the time to start thinking about when you last thanked your customers!”

Ben Lord, Speedbird arrives in style...

Managing Director,

Times have been busier than ever before at local company, Speedbird Promotions! From winning major orders from some of Britain’s largest transport brand names to new staff hitting local roads selling our expanding range of products and services, its no wonder time is flying at Speedbird! Ben Lord, Managing Director writes “Whilst we’ve had a really full on year so far, we’re still noticing that there’s an air of hesitation amongst customers who are looking at buying some of our products and services. Our portfolio of promotional products and office and print supplies is uniquely designed to save you time and money, by consolidating dealing with multiple suppliers. What’s more even in these economic recovery times, we can’t recommend and

It doesn’t stop there, with the launch of their newest division SOS! Speedbird Office Supplies, Speedbird wants your waste for a very worthy cause! For the next 12 months, we’ll be raising funds for the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at the West Suffolk Hospital – a cause particularly close to both Ben and Accounts Manager, Glenda. Ben Explains why:“As many will know, Speedbird is a family run business which remains central to our fundamental beliefs at the very core of our business. My Nan suffers from three forms of arthritis and has been in and out of hospital for the last fourteen years for several joint replacement operations due to this debilitating condition. Whilst remaining extremely dignified in her suffering, and never one to complain, Nan’s latest need was a hip replacement following a rapid deterioration in her mobility leaving her totally house bound. With the date of this desperately needed operation literally upon

us last November, a small tumble at home resulted in a serious arm fracture that required operating on not just once but twice as it slipped out of its position over Christmas. This resulted in the postponement of her hip replacement until May this year, making it more complex to routine hip replacements. Thankfully she has achieved a full recovery and is improving day by day, all of which is down to the brilliant care, skill and expertise of the Trauma and Orthopaedic team at West Suffolk Hospital and in particular to two consultants – Mr Andrew Dunn and Mr Adrian August – we just can’t thank them enough for the difference this makes to us all, but in particular to Nan and when monies are raised for hospitals, its rarely for departments like this, and so, with a local cause in mind, its something we wanted to do to show our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for what they have done.”

Eczema:the Scratching! Stop

Eczema can be tough for a child to cope with, but you can help reduce the impact of it by making certain changes to their routines. Around 10% of babies and little children have eczema, which is a dry, itchy inflammation of the skin that usually appears on the elbows, the creases of the knees, the wrists and the neck. The good news is that by their teens almost 75% of children grow out of eczema. Below are seven top tips to help you deal with childhood eczema:

1.Get professional advice

If you think your baby or child has eczema, see your GP to get treatment. Don’t try to treat it by yourself. Each case of eczema can need different treatment, which usually involves a combination of moisturisers, topical steroid creams and ointments. If necessary, you may be referred to a dermatologist. If the skin becomes red and starts to ooze liquid, it may be infected, in which case see your GP immediately for antibiotics.

2.Get into a bedtime routine

Children with eczema often find sleeping a problem, as their skin may get hotter and itchier at night. Keep their bedroom cool and use cotton sheets or a light, natural-fibre duvet rather than a heavy duvet. Apply moisturiser at least 20 minutes before bedtime to allow it to soak in. Keep pets out of the bedroom, as dogs and cats can make eczema worse.

3.Don’t overdo the products

Soap and bubble baths can make eczema far worse, and a recent study found that washing your baby too often can make them more likely to suffer from eczema (possibly due to harsh chemicals in soaps stripping the skin of its protective layer). New advice says that a baby should be washed once or twice a week, although the baby’s face, hands and bottom should be cleaned daily. Fragrance-free products are generally the best on sensitive skin. Ask your pharmacist or GP for advice on what products to buy, and use cool water in the bath.

40

themhd

4. Moisturise Over-dry skin is more likely to flare up or become infected with a bacteria or virus. Use creams as directed by your GP to make sure the affected skin is kept as soft and moist as possible. Avoiding harsh soaps that dry out the skin also helps.

5.Help them stop scratching

One of the biggest problems with childhood eczema is the urge to scratch the itchy skin, which may then bleed or become infected. See if your child scratches at certain times of the day, for example while watching TV, and try to teach them to do something else instead, such as tightly holding their arm. Praise them for not scratching, or even use a star chart. Keep their nails short. Cotton clothes rather than wool may lessen the itching.

6.Look at their diet

Eczema usually starts when the baby is around six months old, but in the majority of children this is not because of new foods in their diet. In about 10% of children with eczema, certain foods can trigger the condition, including: milk, eggs, citrus fruit, chocolate, peanuts and colourings. If you suspect a food, it is important to obtain advice from your GP to avoid feeding your child an unbalanced diet.

them cool 7.Keep Heat can make the skin itch more, so after your child has been running around, or playing sports, try to keep them as cool as possible in loose clothing. If they’ve been swimming, rinse off any chlorine from the pool, as this can irritate the skin.

“Bend & Blend”

A combination of dietary tips, mind/body exercises and latest research blended together to promote health & vitality. This month we look at the benefits of yoga for all ages! There is often a misconception that you need to be “young and bendy” to practice yoga, well that’s rubbish! Yoga is suitable for all ages and all abilities! We discuss specifically how young children and Teenagers can benefit and also look at the benefits for the older generation. Why is it that yoga is now becoming more popular? Well perhaps it’s because in our busy frantic stress filled lives we are now beginning to realise that looking after our bodies and our minds is very important. I call it “preventative, do it yourself medicine!” Most doctors are now recognising the link between stress and “dis-ease” and yoga tackles the root causes of our “dis-ease” unlike modern western medicine which tends to have 2 main rules. 1. Temporarily fix the symptoms with a pill (and then set up a chain of side effects that mean you end up on more medication!) or 2. Operate on the “dis-eased” part of the body without looking to see what’s causing the problem in the first place. Yes , I know that is slightly generalistic, but many of the eastern medicine traditions including things like yoga, ayurvedic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine etc look at the individual and try and treat the whole person, rather than the “dis-ease”. Benefits of yoga for children: Children respond brilliantly to yoga, they still have an amazing degree of flexibility in their bodies as they move so much more freely than us adults. They also have an open and flexible mind and will try out postures that most adults are too scared to do. • Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games, constant communication and competitive sports. We usually don’t think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are and yoga can help counter these pressures. • When children learn techniques for self-help, relaxation, and inner

42

themhd

fulfillment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. • Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive; it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. • Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface. • The greatest challenge with children is to hold their attention long enough to teach them the benefits of yoga: stillness, balance, flexibility, focus, peace, grace, connection, health, and well-being. Luckily, most children love to talk, and they love to move—both of which can happen in yoga. Children will jump at the chance to assume the role of animals, trees, flowers, warriors. Our role is to step back and allow them to bark in the dog pose, hiss in the cobra, and meow in cat stretch. The importance of respect for all life and the principle of interdependence becomes apparent. Children begin to understand that we are all made of the same “stuff.” We’re just in different forms. Benefits of yoga for teenagers: Teenagers love yoga, for the girls it’s about becoming aware of their bodies and what they can do to keep healthy and look good. Toning up and strengthening, walking tall with confidence. Not allowing stress and the demands of social media and peer pressure to get on top of them. For

the boys its about counteracting the side effects of the sports they play, finding balance, strength and flexibility and reducing injury. Many top footballers, cricketers and rugby players have added yoga classes to their training schedule! • Makes them aware of how posture affects everything you do in life, including the amount of energy you have. • Offers a different approach to exercise by giving them a chance to listen to and learn about their own body’s needs. • Will give them more energy instead of sapping energy to the point of exhaustion, as in many other forms of exercise or sports. • Postures can work on specific problem areas of the body and can balance hormonal fluctuations, really important during the teen years. • A complete body workout to balance out the stresses that playing any sport puts on the body and helps correct tightness, weakness or imbalances. • De-stresses them and teaches them to relax, unwind, chill and “be still” in mind and body – something that in our stressed and busy lives we forget the benefits of. • Improves concentration for exams and reduces stress levels with specific breathing techniques. • Increases their self awareness and self confidence. Benefits of yoga for the older generation: A lot of people will say to me “oh it’s alright for you you’re a yoga teacher you are strong and flexible”, well that may be the case now, but it certainly wasn’t the case when I started! I have a couple of

health&beauty ladies who epitomise to me the benefits of yoga for the older generation. One started in her late thirties/early forties (bit like me!) and is now in her mid seventies and I have never seen anyone with such poise and elegance, grace, strength and beauty. She will move effortlessly into yoga postures and does a beautiful headstand! The other lady didn’t start yoga until she was in her mid sixties (yes!!) and she is now in her early seventies and keeps up with people in a strong flow yoga class that are a third of her age! (Oh and by the way she does a beautiful headstand too!) So it’s NEVER too late to start yoga! • Balances help to increase the bone density of joints as they are non impact weight bearing, this reducing the likelihood of osteoporosis. • Joints are worked to their full range of mobility, this keeping them active and the synovial fluid working effectively. This reduced the likelihood of arthritis and helps with overall stiffness in joints. • Muscles are strengthened and

toned without the need to pump weights around. • All the major glands and organs of the body are stimulated and balanced in the thousands of yoga postures and their are specific postures for certain conditions, for example Diabetes, Asthma, Heart Conditions , Back Pain and Arthritis. • Inversions increase the blood flow to the brain and reduce the ageing effects of gravity! ( isn’t that reason enough!!!!???) So what can you do now you’re convinced of the benefits? Children – talk to your school head of PE and ask them if your child’s school can offer yoga. Breakfast, Lunch and After School Clubs are all possible, or we can do a _ term of yoga in the PE slot or even come into the school for a day and offer a Health and Wellbeing Conference. Teenagers – we run two Teen Yoga Clubs: King Edwards Tuesdays 4 -5 and County Upper Wednesdays 4 – 5. If you want us to set up a Teen

Yoga Club at your school please contact me. The Older Generation – we have a new class coming to us that has transferred from The Active Age Centre and is called “Yoga for all ages and abilities” it runs on a Monday from 2.00 to 3.00pm and is specifically geared towards people over 55. It is one of our Discounted Classes and is only £5.00 to drop in. Any one else? - come along and try out NEW 8 Week INTRO TO YOGA class starting in September – call reception for details. For more information and to download the new September timetable please visit www.the-self-centre.co.uk, or pop in and see us in Kempson Way! Carole Baker – Director: The Self Centre.

Osteopathy for

Pregnancy

During pregnancy considerable postural and spinal changes occur, in order to accommodate the increasing size and weight of the uterus. These changes may cause backache, neck ache, heartburn, breathing and digestion difficulties, nausea and vomiting, aching legs, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and fatigue. Osteopathic treatment can help the body to adapt, and make the pregnancy much more comfortable. Osteopaths look at the posture and mechanics of the mother during pregnancy and ensure that the spine, pelvis, shoulder and hip girdles are flexible and supple enough to enable the body to adapt to the changing dynamics that evolve throughout the pregnancy. Osteopathy can also assist the body in preparation for labour and delivery. An important part of preparation for childbirth is to ensure that the mother’s pelvis is structurally balanced and able to allow the passage of

44

themhd

the baby down the birth canal. Trauma to the pelvic bones, coccyx or sacrum at any time in a mother’s life can leave increased tension in muscles, and strains within the ligaments and bones of the pelvis. This can limit the ability of these bones to separate during labour, and thus limit the size of the pelvic outlet. One of the aims of the osteopathic treatment is to release old strains within the pelvis, thus giving the best chance of an easy and uncomplicated labour. Is Osteopathy safe during Pregnancy? Osteopaths are highly skilled and undergo a minimum of 4 years training. Gentle osteopathic techniques are perfectly safe at all stages of pregnancy. Preparation for labour and position of the baby. As labour is likely to be more difficult if the baby is not lying correctly, it is worth trying to help them to move into a better position. The baby generally settles in a head downward position and facing backward with his spine curled

in the same direction as his mother’s spine. This puts the baby in the most advantageous position for passing through the birth canal during labour. Self-Help tips to encourage the baby to lie correctly • Try to keep as active as possible throughout the pregnancy. • ‘Walk tall’, pushing your head upwards as if suspended by a string. Do not allow your lower back to slump into a very hollow position. • Sitting slouched in soft chairs encourages the baby to turn into the back to back position. • Where possible, sit with your bottom well back in the chair and the lower back supported. • Better still, sitting on a foam wedge, or on a chair that has a seat that tilts forward, actively encourages the baby to lie correctly.

Deal with the Peel After a day in the sun, you may find yourself with an itchy, peeling sunburn. Peeling skin is not only unattractive, it can also be quite painful. Here are a few simple ways to deal with the peel.

COOL IT DOWN

If you notice your skin start to peel, the first thing you should do is take a cold shower or bath. The cold water will help your skin cool down and slow the peeling process. When you are drying your skin, be sure to pat dry with a clean, soft towel and avoid rubbing. By rubbing your skin, you can actually speed up and spread the peeling of your skin.

MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN

Once you get out of the shower and dry your skin, apply a moisturising lotion. Look for a moisturiser that is specifically designed to work on sunburn or peeling skin. Generally, the lotion should contain aloe vera, which will cool your skin, reduce inflammation and slow the peeling. Aloe vera is a natural cactus extract that has long been hailed for its soothing properties. You can actually buy pure aloe vera gel (or break open the plant, if you have it) and apply it directly to the peeling skin to aid healing, fight pain and avoid infection.

DRINK UP

Now that you have cooled your skin from the outside, it’s time to start working on your skin from the inside. Truth be told, nothing helps your skin as much as a tall glass of water. Healthy skin needs to stay hydrated. When your skin is damaged – like after a sunburn – water becomes even more important. Drink a lot of water to give your skin all the fuel it needs to repair and revive itself. If you notice your skin beginning to peel, be sure to drink 8-10 glasses of water per day.

STOP THE ITCH

At all costs, you should avoid scratching your skin when it’s peeling. You can actually do permanent damage to your skin in the form of scars. If you get the urge to scratch, the best thing to do is to use ice to dull the sensation. Put ice in a piece of soft

46

themhd

cloth and gently place the cloth on top of the area of your skin that itches. The itch should subside once the ice begins to cool down the skin.

DON’T PEEL IT

Flaky, peeling skin is more than just irritating and unattractive. It can also lead to an infection. Peeling skin can become infected if you scratch or try to forcefully peel the skin. If there is a segment of dead skin that is hanging off and you want to remove it, don’t pull on it - no matter how temping it is. Instead, get a small pair of scissors and carefully cut away just that section of skin. Be sure you are only cutting away dead skin and you don’t tear skin that is trying to heal. Once you cut away the dead skin, apply an antibacterial ointment to the area.

BE PREPARED

Prevention is the best cure for peeling. Plan ahead and don’t get sunburned in the first place. By the time your skin starts peeling, that means that the damage has already been done. Before you go out into the sun, always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. If you are going into the water, be sure to re-apply sunscreen each time you get out. When applying sunscreen don’t forget about hidden areas, such as behind your ears, which are often forgotten and end up burned.

September in the garden With the days becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, this is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials such as asters and sedums. Many of the wonderful autumn flowers belong to the daisy family, their simple shapes and strong colours adding interest to any garden at this time of year. When combined with structural grasses the effect can be truly magical on a misty morning. Late September is the perfect time to turn your attention to

your lawn. Renovate established lawns by scarifing vigorously to remove debris (known as thatch) and spike to allow air into the soil and allow surface water to drain away. We use a proprietary autumn fertiliser to encourage strong roots which is beneficial for the winter conditions ahead, and mowing can be reduced when the lawn starts to grow at a slower rate. If you are giving your garden a makeover this autumn, lay a new lawn or replace a tired old patch of grass.

Confused?

Before autumn truly sets in, roses still need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped. Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get to off to a good start next spring. The soil is still warm after the summer, (even though the last month has been dissapointingly on the cool side!) and the increasing humidity are perfect for plants to just put on a little growth before the first frosts.

Have a lovely September

Wallpaper has been making quite a comeback this past year or so, but many people steer clear of doing it themselves as they lack confidence in hanging paper. If you are unsure of yourself, and especially if the paper is pricey, then getting a professional to hang it rather than risk bodging the job will probably be more economical in the long run. But if you’re willing to give it a go, follow these tips… Measuring up Most rolls usually get 3-4 strips for the average room height, so by working it out basically by measuring around the room you get an idea of how many rolls you need, always buy more than you think, you can always take unopened rolls back to the shop and get a refund, Wallpapers that have a repeat design are a little more challenging than plain papers as the strips need to be cut to include the exact number of repeats per strip. The old maxim measure twice, cut once will always rule! • Preparation is key. Ensure walls are stripped, filled and sanded down. Use a sealant on any dodgy porous walls • Line the walls horizontally with a good quality, high grade lining paper

58

themhd

made easy

• Use a plumb line to get the first length straight • Get the first strip straight and the rest will follow! • A pre pasted paper saves time and mess, or opt for a paste-the-wall paper (available to order – it’s a revelation!) • Measure twice and cut once to avoid incorrect lengths being cut Top Tip: use pattern or texture to smooth out uneven walls!

Innovation and thrift • Use stripes horizontally for a more contemporary look, and to make small rooms appear larger.

• Try using two coordinating/ accent wallpapers side by side • Paper the ceiling down to the top of the window. • Find a ‘funky’ paper to wallpaper an old chest of drawers, varnish and add new handles. • Use leftover pieces to line drawers. • If you fall in love with expensive paper but your budget doesn’t run to several rolls, use single drops behind feature furniture, and paint the rest of the walls in a coordinating paint. • Order a large sample and frame it up to use as artwork.
