EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the OCTOBER ISSUE

As I am writing this, changes are happening again with regards to what we can and can’t do in the UK. It sounds like the hospitality industry may be one of the first to be affected again sadly. We feel for all the businesses that will once again suffer at the hands of this pandemic. Hopefully, if we all stick to the rules, we may be able to see some light at the end of the tunnel. But enough doom and gloom, let’s think positive! We have lots of recipes to warm your taste buds now that the autumn nights are here, and the temperature is certainly dropping once the sun goes down, so head to pages 28, 30 and 32. Halloween is a little up in the air this month, but with the little ones not knowing if they can go trick or treating, there is a pumpkin trail to look forward to, go to page 38 for more details. Our crossword competition on page 36 gives you a chance to win a meal for two at Orissa Restaurant in Risbygate Street, Bury, so get those thinking caps on and get entering! GEMMA PROCTER, editor As usual, stay safe, and see you all next month!

LOCAL LOCAL NEWS NEWS

Dear reader,

my

cha ri ty Registered Charity No. 1049223

Last month saw us launch our #25 Appeal to celebrate our 25th birthday and we hope, over the course of the next 12 months, you will help us to raise £25,000 to pay for a play specialist for the emergency department here at West Suffolk Hospital. This role is new to the Trust but will be a fantastic addition to their services. Have you ever taken your child to the emergency department? Imagine seeing it through their eyes. Everything is big and bright even at night time, there’s a lot of hustle and bustle as staff go about their work and noise from other patients. Your child may be in pain and discomfort and, understandably, frightened. As a parent you want to support them but you too may also be afraid. The medical staff are there to make a diagnosis, to administer pain relief or to order any appropriate tests and they do this with care and efficiency but they lack the time to spend talking to your child, explaining everything and helping them with ‘tools’ to make the experience a better one. This is where the play specialist comes in. They will be there to work with the young patient and their family to help calm and reassure them as they are treated. Ruth Hassall, lead paediatric nurse said, “In my experience play specialists can make the whole experience of attending the emergency department more positive for children and their families. They can support children, families and staff through difficult experiences, make the department less scary and more fun without taking away from the necessary and often unpleasant things we have to do. While the nurses and doctors work to ensure your child is safe and well the play specialist will work to ensure they remember the experience as a positive one, facilitating the work of the other health care professionals and preventing future hospital phobia. Even when they are not there the behind the scenes work they do means their presence is felt 24/7 by both staff and patients.” I am sure you’ll agree; this role will be a wonderful asset to our emergency department. Ensuring your child’s hospital experience is positive is just so important. It will make the whole visit easier for everyone and help reduce future anxieties should your child need to attend the hospital again. We can’t fund this role without your help so please, put your thinking cap on. As I said earlier, it’s all about #25 so do a sponsored silence for 25 minutes, make loom bands and sell them to raise £25 or cycle 25 miles. There are so many ideas and we hope you think of some crazy, fun ones. We all need a little silly in our lives don’t we! For more information about #25 please go to www.mywishcharity.co.uk Sue Smith, Head of Fundraising

@mywishcharity mywishcharity If you have any questions about fundraising, any of the events mentioned above or how you can help the hospital, please contact fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 12 | OCTOBER 2020

MORETON HALL NEWS... from Peter Thompson, Mayor

Email: peter.thompson@westsuffolk.gov.uk Mobile: 07810 868986

Youth Centre Coming of Age

I have some great news to share about the Youth Centre. I was able to put West Suffolk Council in touch with a great guy I know, Leon Edwards, who has now taken on the mantle of being the principal director. He comes with decades of experience in youth work and has already implemented some new and exciting projects. We’re looking at a bright future, with a hub model bringing partnerships in which we haven’t seen before such as putting the British Legion in touch. It is tricky at the moment to re-establish the Tuesday night club, but that will come back in time. A debt of gratitude is held for Frank, Patsy and Clive, who have left such a strong legacy.

Traffic Special

I have received record correspondence this month - bushes, fallen trees and City Fibre being the main subjects, however one dominated. Traffic. Why on Earth Suffolk County Council decided to perform works near Sebert Wood on the day that schools went back only they will know. The important thing was that we finally got the remedial works done which I’ve been asking for for months near the pub. We also saw a very useful zebra crossing (technically a toucan crossing I think) installed which will increase safety for those crossing Symonds Rd. Our County Councillor has been pushing for that for years and used some of his highways locality to support the project. Very important work which justifies the short disruption.

PUMP IT UP

Look out for the next of Michelle’s trails across Moreton Hall. This month, we’ll see the Pumpkin Trail on 30th and 31st October. Here’s my effort from last year!

Britain’s Bury’s Got Talent

Battle of Britain

Last month we saw the 80th anniversary of our victory in the Battle of Britain. Usually, RAF Honington would mark the occasion with a parade through Angel Hill, however in these trying times, just the service had to do. Simon, the vicar at St Marys, was a great host and the RAF were represented by Station Commander Matt Radnall seen here with me in the socially distanced church. As gatherings are increasingly restricted, it was tough to balance the importance of this occasion with protecting each other from Covid. The mitigation was excellent and I think it is very, very important that we must not forget them...

Big congratulations to one of our own, Souparnika Nair, who at time of writing is still in the contest in BGT. What a voice!!!!! All of Moreton Hall, Bury and Kerala are behind you!. 14 | OCTOBER 2020

ROUND THE WORLD IN SOUTHGATE

The world came to the Nowton Estate and beyond over the bank holiday weekend. The Round the World Trail was held at the end of August and saw large numbers visiting the 25 exhibits outside residents’ houses. Jessica Rudd, the organiser said: “We had dislays ranging from caravanning to the sights of Paris, and the pyramids of Egypt.” The Community Centre hosted the Great British Seaside Holiday, created by Southgate Church. We would like to thank all of the residents who took part. Jessica is hoping to organise a Christmas lights trail in December. The Church is presenting a Sparkling Lights display outside the Community Centre on All Hallows Eve – Saturday 31 October.

LOCAL NEWS

w

Welcome once again to our monthly article, where we hope to keep you up to date with local news and relevant issues.

Thank you

Our thanks go out to Cllr Trevor Beckwith for the installation of the pedestrian crossing opposite Sebert Road. We must also thank all our Councillors for the ticket machines now in use in the local car parks, we hope this will go some way to easing the parking problems in and around Lawson Place. However, on a recent visit to the pharmacy, I note people parking on the pavement outside Tesco, which means people with prams and mobility scooters cannot use it. Please use the car parks, as at the moment they are free.

Boy Racers

Our problems with boy racers have not gone away. We have been assured by the police that they are doing all they can to bring the culprits to account. If you have any information or evidence please pass it to the police via 101, Crimestoppers, or tell us. We are actively trying to get the Public Space Protection Order used in Town, extended to Moreton Hall, to deal with this long running problem.

CityFibre

City Fibre and its contractors are still busy in and around the estate. So many problems have been generated by their cavalier work, that representatives from Suffolk County Council are following them to ensure all regulations have been followed. 18 | OCTOBER 2020

May I repeat, the installation of fibre outside your home does not mean you will get free wi-fi, you will still need connection to it and will have to sign up with a limited number of providers.

Air Quality Group

This group, which was formed mainly of representatives of Residents Associations, and facilitated by the District Council, has met remotely several times, one task is to seek the routes that lorries are supposed to take through our Town, which includes our estate. It is also looking at ways to stop vehicles idling when stationary.

The AGM

Our AGM should take place in October, but due to restrictions the Committee has decided to postpone it till 2021, We were going to try a socially distanced committee meeting on November 12th this year, but new regulations introduced as I write, may mean this will have to be in virtual form. Contact us on: Our website https:moretonhallresidents. wordpress.com/ Or at secretarymhra@gmail.com We will advise when committee/public meetings can take place.

HUMMINGBIRDS IN MORETON HALL

O

D M

G

ardens across Moreton Hall and beyond had some very special visitors in September. Hovering in front of flowers, sipping nectar with its long tongue, they looked just like a hummingbird from a nature documentary. In fact, what we saw was not a bird but a large moth, about 50mm across its wings, called the hummingbird hawkmoth. Its body is brown with white spots, and there are large orange patches on its wings which are very visible as it darts from flower to flower. Hummingbird hawkmoths are creatures of habit, so if there is one on your buddleia one day, the chances are it will come back the next day at the same time.

Tu W

They were, excitingly, the offspring of French moths which migrated here in spring; the late summer peak in numbers is a result of locallybred moths hatching out of their cocoons. Hummingbird hawkmoths rarely survive the winter in the UK, so next year we can watch out for some more of these moths coming over from France and hopefully breeding in large enough numbers to enjoy seeing them again. The buzz one hears from these day flying moths, literally we can hear the wings buzz, is a delightful way to end the summer. The caterpillars eat bedstraw, small plants with whorls of leaves

such as the lady’s bedstraw found at the drainage basin on our developing Industrial Estate, and the sticky goose-grass found in our hedges. Look out for a big caterpillar with green or reddish brown body with white dots and dark, white and yellow stripes, black spots and a blue yellow-tipped horn. If you can plant some flowers which provide large amounts of nectar, such as red valerian, honeysuckle, jasmine, Buddleia, lilac, Escallonia, petunia and phlox, you may be lucky enough to attract this wonderful small animal to your garden next September.

SOUTHGATE

NEWS Six months ago the country went into lockdown and although it was a different and difficult time, as a community Southgate shone. We had the Zoo Trail in March and the Around The World Trail in August, both organised by Jessica Rudd and well supported by residents and visitors. Another resident, Fay Lambert, organised a Rock Snake and over 400 stones were painted by both children and adults. Patrick and I will be funding a small number of stones to be mounted on the wall at Southgate Community Centre and the remainder laid into the grass outside the centre as no doubt 2020 will form part of our history.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 19th Oct - 1st Nov NOWTON ESTATE PUMPKIN CARVING COMPETITION Due to ongoing government restrictions Jessica Rudd is hosting a virtual pumpkin carving competition. To enter, please send a photo of your pumpkin via Facebook messenger to Jessica Rudd or email it to nowtonestatepumpkin@ gmail.com Saturday 12th December CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TRAIL Again organised by Jessica Rudd, details to follow nearer the time.

Patrick and I recently did a litter pick and disappointingly collected two bags full of rubbish in just two small areas. The majority of residents work hard to love where we live but unfortunately there is a small minority who spoil it by discarding their waste everywhere but in bins. SID (speed indicator device) is currently in Wilks Road but will soon be moving to Hardwick Lane. We are continuing to look for other suitable sites within the ward. We often get residents contacting us about issues with trees on the Nowton Estate trees under the ownership of Havebury HOW TO WEAR YOUR MASK can be identified by a silver coloured disc pinned to the trunk fairly high up, other trees will be either managed by Suffolk County Council or West Suffolk Council.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

There is nothing more debilitating than pain and joining the Chronic Pain Support Group helps me to cope. Meeting people who understand that when you are having a bad day, a kind word of understanding goes a long way. That is only one part of the help the group gives me. So, when the Covid Virus took over all our lives, keeping in touch with each other became imperative, that is why the Challenge site was started. To make sure that we could stay in contact with each other and we could keep busy, learning new skills and helping each other in the process. For my part, I keep busy thinking of new challenges and making sure that they are doable. I must admit that when we started, no one expected it to go on for so long, but luckily there are so many new crafts to learn and so far we still manage to find new ones. The challenges have ranged from embroidery to making a clay pot and a macramÊ holder to hang in the garden. Everyone has embraced the news skills and I have enjoyed learning them as well. Some people have picked up new crafts that they love doing. One lady had never embroidered before, now she does it daily and she has done a few while still carrying on with the new challenges. Others will also carry on with some of their new hobbies. There is no pressure to join in and no time limit. Some people might not fancy one of the challenges, so they do something else. As long as we are keeping busy and talking to each other on a daily basis via social media, we can support each other and we laugh a lot. New people are made to feel welcome and are welcome to join in if they wish to. Some just join in the chat and that is great. I think that all members have been terrific, trying and succeeding in so many new skills. It doesn’t matter if a pot looks dreadful, it is still a success because we have had a go. The Challenge Group has helped me so much. It has kept me busy and made me laugh and helped me to cope with the situation we now find ourselves. I know that my friends are there when I have a bad day. We look after each other because we understand. (in her own words, the initiator of the challenge group) At this time of uncertainty and the ever changing guidance please see the CPSG website for meeting details. ROAST VENISON LOIN WITH PUMPKIN & SICHUAN SALT Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 1 hr and 10 mins Serves 4

A great autumn dish, try this roast venison and pumpkin as an alternative Sunday roast. The Sichaun salt seasoning really packs a flavour punch

INGREDIENTS: 1 small pumpkin or squash, peeled and seeds removed, then sliced into wedges 8 sage leaves 60ml maple syrup 3 banana shallots , peeled and sliced lengthways 40g butter 600g venison loin , fat and sinew removed For the Sichuan salt 10 Sichuan peppercorns 1 tbsp flaky salt 1 tsp chopped rosemary

METHOD: Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Put the pumpkin, sage, maple syrup and shallots in a roasting tin and give it a good mix with your hands, making sure you coat everything in the syrup. Add half the butter and sprinkle with salt, then roast for 45 mins or until the pumpkin is tender. While the vegetables are roasting, heat a frying pan, add a splash of oil and the remaining butter. When foaming, add the venison and sear as quickly as you can. Remove from the heat and set aside. Once the vegetables are soft, lay the loin on top and return the tin to the oven to cook for another 15-20 mins. While the venison is roasting, put the Sichuan peppercorns, salt and rosemary into a pestle and mortar and grind to a coarse seasoning. When the venison is cooked, remove from the oven and rest for 10 mins. While it’s resting, brush with the glaze from the pan and sprinkle over a generous pinch of the seasoning. Serve the carved venison with the pumpkin and shallots.

What’s been happening at...

HARDWICK Primary School We are so pleased to welcome our children and staff back after the summer break and for some quite a long time due to the school closure. We are really pleased that the children have all settled in well to their new classes and classrooms and are enjoying being back at school. It has been lovely and so refreshing to see the children getting back to some sort of “normality”, socialising with friends and wanting to learn. The school would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding as the new system of drop off and collection started in September, after some small alterations and improvements the system is working well. We hugely appreciate the co-operation of parents and carers, as during the long months of lock-down, the community spirit has been fantastic. Special credit must be given to all our amazing children whose behaviour since they returned has been exemplary. Finally we would like to send a very warm welcome to all our new children and their parents, carers and families, and to our Otter Class teacher Miss Warne. As you can see after just a few days our delightful new Reception classes are just loving life at Hardwick as they start on their primary school adventure. OCTOBER’S STORY ABOUT THE NIGHTMARE OF PALM OIL AND WHAT YOU CAN DO

T

his month we are deviating from our usual path and taking a look at Palm oil. If you have missed the scare stories that crop up from time to time about this amazing product then here is a brief chance to catch up. Palm oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet, demand has undergone a phenomenal growth and is expected to more than double by 2030 and triple by 2050. Not surprising when it is thought to be found in about 50% of supermarket products such as food, cleaners even cosmetics. But why is this a problem? The simple answer is destruction of rainforest on a huge scale. Between 1990 and 2010, it is estimated that 8.7 million acres of rainforest in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea were cleared for palm plantations, an area nearly twice the size of Wales. In the same time, Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil, has seen a 600% growth in the area covered by plantations with an associated loss of 40% of its lowland rainforests. Next on the list is Central Africa, with more than a million acres of rainforest under imminent threat. Destruction of rainforest has a range of effects on the environment and humans.

1. Biodiversity

Spotting palm oil

The most highlighted plight of a species due to loss of rainforest caused by palm oil plantations is that of orangutans, 80% of their habitat has been destroyed in the last 20 years and there is serious risk of their extinction in the near future. This is just one of thousands of species of both animals and plants under threat.

2. Climate

Carbon released by deforestation is a major contributor to climate change. In addition 65% of the world’s tropical peatlands are located in Indonesia, and when plantations are established on peat, emissions are even worse.

3. People

Millions of people have either lost their homes to palm plantations or are exploited by the companies. It is estimated that there are between 72,000 and 200,000 children working on palm plantations in Malaysia.

For the reasons above it seems like a good cause to help reduce our dependence on palm oil, however that is not easy. Companies supplying products containing palm oil have found ways to put you off the scent. Usually you would check the ingredients printed on the packaging of any product to see if it contained the words palm oil. Sneakily suppliers use a multitude of names for the same thing– here are just a few • Cetyl Palmitate and Octyl Palmitate • Elaeis Guineensis (Taxonomic name for palm oil) • Hexadecylic or Palmitic Acid • Hydrated Palm Glycerides • Palm Oil Kernal • Palmate • almitate • Anything with ‘Palmitate’ at the end We need clarity from suppliers to enable us to make a sensible decision whether to buy a product or not. Solutions • Avoid palm oil altogether if possible. • If that’s not possible, then look for companies practicing sustainable palm oil production in the ‘Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping Guide’

We also have loads of ideas at ecofrenzy.com to help you save money by making small life-style changes.

Garden Confidential

by Tom Clarke

What to do in your garden this October... In October we see the end of British Summer time on the 25th of October, when the clocks go back and the shorter days really do begin. More so than ever we need our gardens during this time when we face the threats of Covid 19 and Climate Change. For our mental and physical well being, gardens can provide a little oasis and a safe space to enjoy and quite often in October it is very pleasant conditions for working in the garden.

jobs for the month General Maintenance l Forget the gym and get yourself a good workout by raking and sweeping fallen leaves. Even on the coolest of days this will work up a sweat . Leafs are great for composting and if you don’t have a compost bin put them in a bin bag with a few holes in it and next year you will have some valuable leaf mould to feed your plants. l A nice mucky job to do if you have a pond is to remove all of the black sludge that forms at the bottom. It is worth doing to improve the oxygen in the water. Pile the rubbish on the side of the pond to allow any wildlife the chance to return to the water before adding it to the compost. l Take advantage of any dry days to paint fences, sheds etc with a preservative

Fruit Garden l Bulbs - now is the time to think about how to brighten up the garden when it wakes after hibernation. Bulbs are incredible value, for they have instant impact, but it is always better to buy few varieties and larger numbers of each. The earlier you plant bulbs the better, for the soil is still warm, and getting the roots established before the weather closes in will help them fight wet and rot.

l Cut back all of the tall shrubs such as lavatera and buddleia. l Now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from buddleia, flowering currants and forsythia l Dahlias should be lifted at the end of the month. Cut down the stems to a few inches. Dig up the tubers and remove any loose soil and store upside down for a couple of weeks to dry. Remove more soil and store in dark cool frost free trays with a little dry compost if you wish. l Prune climbing roses

Vegetable & Fruit Garden l Harvest any pumpkins and squashes before the first frost l Plant garlic l Lift any remaining potatoes before slug damage occurs l In the vegetable plot you can now plant spring cabbage and overwintering onion sets. l Plant new fruit trees and bushes. Choose ‘bare root’ plants, they usually cost less than pot grown ones. l Continue to harvest your apples and pears

CRICKET CLUB

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club have managed 10 weeks of cricket after at one time wondering if any play might be possible due to the coronavirus restrictions. The club have had 3 Saturdays adult teams and 2 on Sundays as well as a number of fixtures for junior teams and the ladies. A number of superb performances have been recorded in particular Justin Broad (see photo) who followed a century against Copdock with am amazing bowling performance of 7.29 away to Saffron Walden. Justin joined the club with his friend Daniel Moriarty from South Africa in 2019 both will be UK passport holders, Daniel has had a terrific first season with Surrey playing with some of the games finest players. Covid 19 curtailed Justin’s role with the MCC Lords Young Cricketers Academy but his performances for Bury St Edmunds suggest a big future for him. Developing young players is a key aim and coaching junior players is a key aspect of the clubs ethos. We are grateful to the many volunteers without whom the club could not thrive.

Autumn Already - Thank You Again! We are very aware of the effect that the Covid-19 has had on people’s lives, schools, businesses, recreation facilities and many other areas of everyday life. The impact has been felt here at the museum as well. But the response from our visitors and supporters has been amazing. The great news – 10 weeks open, over 500 visitors – BRILLIANT. We rely on YOU, via your donations, to bolster the membership subscriptions and tea room income which keep us running. Our volunteers have again been there for You, in making this small local museum a continuing, vibrant and personal place. Now the not so good news – only 3 (possibly 4) weekends open before we finish our season. We are having our final day on Sunday October 18th. (but if the British weather is kind on the 25th we will squeeze one more in – please see our website and social media page for details). Because of the restrictions, decisions for our two event’s - the Annual General Meeting in November and the Departures Memorial in December – will be made soon. Details will be in next month’s Directory and on our social media pages. Two ‘snippets’ of news. We have had the great pleasure of welcoming three car clubs, two Jaguar and the American Car group and touring (ride out) motorcyclists. All have thoroughly enjoyed the museum, the hospitality and the refreshments. It was great to see these guys and gals who have all said ‘they will be back’. Also we have learnt of a ‘Barn Door’ made from a B17-F wing panel! This was found near Walshamle-Willows and we are investigating its history.

How did it end up there? Who was involved in the construction of the building and used it? Which aircraft is it from? Watch this space as the mystery continues and unravels! This leads me on to another request – Have you any memorabilia, artifacts, items which may have historical relevance, especially from the airfield? Even if you may not wish to donate items to us, we are happy to exhibit them within the collection or even try to identify further information about them. Please get in touch if we can help. Last month we appealed for any possible assistance for the Rendering Project. The Control Tower has some external damage that needs addressing. This has become a priority – hopefully it can be completed before the first ‘frosts’ of the autumn arrive. Please CAN YOU HELP? Once rendered, weather proofing with exterior paint will be needed. How can you help? Our appeal is not necessarily just for funds – although this will be a help. Have you access to an industrial scaffold tower which we can borrow (possibly for a few weeks)? Have you a few tons of sand and bags of cement? Can you help with ‘person power’? Have you access to the ‘correct colour’ external paint? I’m sure the local community will come forward and help us, will this be You? If you can assist in any way, please contact our Chairman Graham via the email below. He will be very pleased and grateful to hear from you – however you can be involved. In accordance with regulations, social distancing, hand sanitiser and face coverings are required in the museum. Please continue to observe these ‘minor restrictions’ – we must do everything to protect each other and the volunteers. Don’t let this horrible infection develop into a second wave. We look forward to welcoming EVERYONE over the final few weeks, Sunday 10am to 4pm. Please come and enjoy local history. Do you know what’s on your doorstep? Christ Church

MORETON HALL We live in frustrating times. The recent news about the potential limits on Christmas must have hit us all very hard. While we know Christmas is not postponed, the realisation that having the usual family gathering with many people is now excluded will have come as a great disappointment to many. This is particularly so because many of us believed that the back of Covid 19 would be broken by the beginning of December. We were all looking forward to celebrating Christmas perhaps not completely in the traditional style, but somehow close to it. I know I was. It now seems that, certainly at church, the usual Christmas celebrations cannot take place although some of them will. What really hurts is that the battle with Covid 19 is going to go on for a lot longer than we originally imagined. The old normal may not ever return, or if it does, it may well prove to be two or three years off. Many now think the development of a vaccine may take years and the second

spike may well lead to a third spike and quite widespread local spikes. There has been a lot of talk about how the British have faced tragedies before. It is certainly true that in World War I everybody expected the war to be over by Christmas and four long, bitter years of warfare ensued. While people did not believe in World War II that it would be over by Christmas, the fall of France early on in the war meant that it would not be over in anything like the short time expected, indeed Britain at one point had contingency plans for fighting the war for twenty five years! How are we to respond to this? Part of the Christian message is the giving of special gifts and graces from the Holy Spirit. There is a list of these in the Bible in the book of Galatians chapter 6. They include love, hope, joy, but one of the great gifts in that list is what is called long-suffering or perseverance. It means that by the Holy Spirit God gives us strength to persevere, to

keep going when the prospect of success and even hope itself is disappearing into the gloom. It is the ability to believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel even when you cannot see it and keep travelling toward it. Such a gift is not to be dismissed lightly at times like these. It represents the fact that God does know and cares. It is also a great gift for others, for if you can persevere you help others to persevere, and then whole community can take a step forward. It is at times such as these that mutual support based on prayer and faith can make a world of difference to the community in which we live and to our own lives. Therefore, it is my prayer for all of you that God will grant you the gift of perseverance. Knowing that He does care and He does support and He does love can make all the difference. I am sure God’s good time we will overcome all the dangers of Covid 19 together.

With every good wish

Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH HERE FOR YOUR FAMILY Six months ago, to many of us ‘Zoom’ was a great song from the 80’s. ‘Zoom’ today has a whole new meaning and it is through the wonders of this video conferencing technology that Southgate Church hosted this year’s children’s ‘Holiday Club at Home’. This was a completely new challenge for the Holiday Club team who, despite having many years of experience between them, had never had to run a Holiday Club during a worldwide pandemic! Doreen Whomes has been leading the team for many years and was determined not to let Covid 19 get in the way of this year’s event. ‘Holiday Club at Home’ ran for four days in August and brought together children from 4-11 years for a fun time of songs, bible stories, puppets, crafts and games. Most of the children lived locally though one came from as far afield as North Yorkshire. The wonders of technology. The children loved gathering together on Zoom and the Holiday Club team put on a great programme to keep them all entertained. Team member and puppeteer Kelvin Johnson spent many hours filming with his puppet friends before the event so the children could enjoy some wonderful puppet shows. You can see some of them on the Southgate Church website. Every afternoon after the Zoom sessions had finished, young people from the church delivered activity packs to all the children’s homes. Apart from North Yorkshire! They left that in the safe hands of Royal Mail. The children loved the crafts and activities. One child wrote “I loved the arts and crafts. They have got me inspired to do some like that. This year got me even more excited about next year!!!” Alison Burgess, Family and Community Worker at Southgate Church was delighted with how the week went. “The whole team worked so hard to make Holiday Club happen this year. The delight on the children’s faces when we saw them each day and the enjoyment they showed when their activity packs were delivered was worth all the hard work. It was a great way for them to learn about God’s story in a way they could enjoy and understand.”
