UNDER PASS

We have been looking at this mess for almost two years now and it’s about time we sorted it out, the problem was trying to find out who takes ownership of it, County Council now says it’s theirs, so the aim is to get 4 local schools and see if they are interested, employ a local artist to work with the schools and come up with designs and redecorate the underpass. There are a number of challenges which need to be sorted out. Roberts idea is to try and do something using panels, he and the chairman of the resident’s association Cliff Hind had a meeting with Coastline Graphics who worked on the underpass in town, they came up with some ideas. It would be nice to get it sorted by summer. Let’s keep an eye on this.

Crime and disturbances I have had no emails or complaints regarding crimes or disturbances so I take it that all is well, however, I have noticed there is a budding graffiti artist out there practicing their handy work, anyone who might know who it is let us know as I am sure a word might stop them, perhaps we need a graffiti wall somewhere, but where??. The police are still engaged in the County Lines drug problem and numerous arrests have been made in town and other parts of the county. I am afraid this problem will be with us for a while yet.

DIRECTORY It would be very remiss of me not to congratulate the team of the directory who have worked so hard to keep our directory going for 15 years. What a splendid achievement supplying us with information and giving us a platform to air our views, thank you guys for letting me be part of it all, I look forward to being part of it for a few more years.

Until the next time, take care

Welcome to our monthly article relating to all residents of the Moreton Hall Estate. For those of you who have just moved here, we are here to deal with your concerns or issues by close liason with county, district and town councillors in the area of Bury St. Edmunds. We have a committee who are elected annually at an AGM held in October of each year. This committee meets bimonthly at the Community Centre. We do not charge subscriptions but rely on grants and fund raising for funds. If you feel you should be included in the Moreton Hall Area, please let us know, ALDI STORE. There are plans to build an Aldi Store on land opposite the Sybil Andrews Academy. Residents have received a consultation leaflet about this, so please respond or let us know your feelings or concerns. NEW DEVELOPMENT OF THE GREAT BARTON SIDE OF THE RAILWAY LINE Planning Application DC/19/2456/HYB has been lodged at the District Council with respect to the first 291 properties of a final 1375. A letter regarding this has been sent to all affected residents of Moreton Hall asking for comments. We urge you to respond to the district council in the first instance, then to your county, district and town councillors or finally to us. The matter was discussed at our last committee meeting, at which some actions were agreed. PARKING Parking enforcement will pass from the police to the district council on 6th April this year.

LITTER A resident addressed the committee on the amount of litter on our estate. Whilst concerned individuals and groups organise litter picks, it was felt that we need a campaign, maybe starting in our schools, encompassing a unique slogan. Would anyone like to get this going? UNDERPASS The funds to allow redecoration of the underpass are being collected. We will let you know when work will start. I wish to thank those councillors who have given some of their locality budgets for this project. TRAFFIC We continue to pursue answers to the reason for the increase in HGV traffic on our estate, with a view to getting it reduced. The secretary and I attend the Following council led meetings: The Association of BSE Residents Assocations, the last of which was attended by Tim Passmore, the Police and Crime Commissioner. Air Quality; with respect to air pollution and measurement of same with view to reducing or eliminating it. Our next committee meeting is on Thursday 5th March at 7.30pm at the Community Centre. It’s the start of a significant year for the Abbey of St Edmund and in preparation for the celebrations, work will have begun on removing the old tennis courts. This year marks 1000 years since the foundation of the Abbey of St Edmund by King Canute and celebrations are planned for throughout the year. As part of this special year, the Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership will be applying for grant funding that would, if successful, enable it to gain a better understanding of the structures, artefacts and other links to the Abbey’s medieval past that may lie beneath a large part of the Abbey of St Edmund area. It hopes to do this through a geophysical scan – a way of seeing what’s buried without disturbing the ground. In the meantime, with new tennis courts at the former Eastgate Nurseries in the Abbey Gardens due to open this summer, work to remove the tarmac on the old tennis courts to ready them for the Abbey of St Edmund 1000 celebrations will start this week. The work, which will enhance the appearance and setting of the area, will see contractors on site for five weeks while the area is laid to grass. The removal of the tennis courts will take place under professional archaeological supervision. It’s then hoped that, subject to the results of funding bids, a wide area of the Abbey including the site of King Canute’s stone rotunda built just after the foundation of the of the Abbey in 1020, can be scanned later this year. The Reverend Canon Matthew Vernon from St Edmundsbury Cathedral, chairman of the Heritage Partnership, said: “This is a very significant year for the Abbey of St Edmund and our aim is to find out more about its archaeology and history so we can understand and share more of the story of St Edmund and the Abbey 70 | FEBRUARY 2020

with local people and visitors. There has also been lots of speculation and excitement about the possibility that St Edmund, the martyred King of East Anglia and first patron saint of England, might be buried within the Abbey grounds. While our scan would include the site of the old tennis courts, its purpose is to further the research and discover more about what structures, artefacts and other links to the Abbey’s medieval past may lie beneath a much larger part of the former Abbey. It is our belief that this would in turn greatly contribute to our understanding of this internationally significant heritage site which remains a scene of continuing wonder and delight.” The Abbey Gardens represents just a third of the former Abbey of St Edmund area which stretches as far as St Mary’s Church, the Vinefields and the water meadows. The Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership was set up to help protect and conserve the entire area and to develop greater public understanding of its archaeological, historical, architectural and religious significance. Cllr Joanna Rayner, West Suffolk Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: “This is a year of celebration for our communities in Bury St Edmunds and West Suffolk – celebrating St Edmund, 1000 years of the Abbey founded in his honour and its national and international significance. While we have much history and heritage to be proud of already, there is so much more that we hope to discover in 2020 and it looks like it could be a very exciting year ahead.” The Heritage Partnership is led by St Edmundsbury Cathedral in collaboration with West Suffolk Council and representatives of Suffolk County Council, Bury St Edmunds Town Council, Historic England, English Heritage, the University of East Anglia, the University of Suffolk, the Bury Society and several local community groups as well as specialist planners, architects, historians and archaeologists.
