Welcome to the September issue September brings a change of pace as summer starts to give way to autumn. The children are heading back to school, routines return and there’s something quite appealing about settling into a new season. After a summer of BBQs and lighter meals, it’s also the perfect time to start thinking about some comforting favourites, so don’t miss our recipe for Sweet Potato Soup on page 42 – simple, warming and just right for those cooler days. If you fancy trying something new this autumn, why not give bridge a go? Bury St Edmunds Bridge Club meets at Southgate Community Centre every Thursday evening at 6.30pm and welcomes new members, visitors and players of all abilities. Find out more on page 10. We also have a fascinating look at one of our local wildlife favourites in this month’s feature from Tony at Larkwood Lakes, The Wonder of Otters on page 48. From a thrilling close encounter with a large male otter to discovering more about their habits, diet and social lives. As always, this issue is full with local news, events, features and plenty of ideas for the month ahead. We’re also grateful to all the local businesses who continue to support the magazine, so please remember to support them in return whenever you can. Enjoy the start of autumn, and we’ll be back next month with more from your local community.

Flooring underfoot style: discover the best floors for your lifestyle and space

By Andrew Boreham, Flooring Buyer

recognised for the warmth, comfort and character it brings to contemporary interiors. Modern carpet designs bear little resemblance to those of previous decades. Manufacturers are embracing sophisticated textures, innovative fibres and natureinspired colour palettes that appeal to homeowners seeking both style and practicality.

As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, we’re reflecting on how flooring has evolved over the decades. From a practical necessity to a key design feature, flooring now plays a vital role in shaping the look, feel and comfort of the modern home. Today, flooring has evolved into one of the most important design elements within the home, setting the tone for an entire space and influencing everything from comfort to aesthetics. Among all flooring categories, carpet is experiencing a noteworthy revival. While hard flooring solutions such as luxury vinyl tile, engineered wood and laminate continue to be popular, carpet is once again being

One of the defining carpet trends of the moment is the growing appreciation for texture. Loop piles, ribbed constructions and cut-andloop patterns introduce subtle depth and dimension, adding richness to interiors without overwhelming the overall design scheme. Colour trends are also reflecting a broader desire to reconnect with nature. Warm browns, soft taupes, moss greens and muted terracotta tones are becoming increasingly popular, creating interiors that feel grounded, welcoming and timeless.

jute, alongside recycled synthetic materials. The renewed popularity of carpet can also be linked to changing lifestyles. As homes continue to serve as workplaces, entertainment spaces and places of relaxation, comfort has become a priority. Carpet delivers a softness and warmth that hard flooring simply cannot replicate, making it an appealing choice for bedrooms and other areas where people seek comfort and tranquillity. Ultimately, the best flooring choice will always depend on the needs of the individual homeowner and the demands of the space. What is clear, however, is that flooring has become far more than a practical necessity. It is now an essential part of the design conversation, helping to shape how spaces look, feel and function.

Sustainability continues to shape purchasing decisions across the flooring industry, with manufacturers expanding their use of renewable natural fibres such as wool, sisal and Glasswells Home Department Store Newmarket Road, Bury St Edmunds IP33 3TU Tel: 01284 752804 • www.glasswells.co.uk 4 | SEPTEMBER 2026

Local author publishes five novels to help animals

The five novels by Levity Brown

Local author Levity Brown has turned her storytelling into a fundraising opportunity by publishing five quirky, unique novels. The books, written under the pen name of Levity Brown between 2010 and 2012, were penned as an attempt to save a Norfolk library from closing. The stories proved very popular, but a move to Bury St Edmunds meant she shelved the books for over 10 years.

Then, a chance meeting with a local company that supports authors led to the five books finally being published. “Each story has a twist to it,” Levity explains. “I always describe them as the What if… elements. What if you could alter the course of history? What if you could live in a better world? And so on. A good story is a great place to go on a rainy day, and I have loved writing these books.”

“The five novels were always intended to entertain and also do some good in the world, so the profits from the books will be going to animal charities. I love animals, so it seems fitting that sales of my books will go to help find new homes for unwanted pets.” Well known locally, Levity Brown already has interest from several businesses in the area, who want to hold copies of her books.

You can find out more about her writing and buy the books at

Another amazing collaboration opportunity is the Bury St Edmunds Half Marathon. Organised by AMOKathletics, My WiSH has been chosen as the official charity partner for the event, with funds raised from the event set to be donated to the Macmillan Unit at West Suffolk Hospital. The route will take runners on a mostly flat course, winding through Moreton Hall, Rougham, and nearby villages - meaning there will be beautiful views of the Suffolk countryside along the way. With ten free charity places up for grabs,

now is the time to sign up. Head to the events page on our website to find out more. We’d love to see you in My WiSH purple at the start line. We have many volunteers from local businesses who spend dedicated time gardening at our hospitals, or taking on incredible fundraising challenges such as skydives and the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in support of us. Every partnership between My WiSH and our local business community enhance the care provided

to the people of west Suffolk and beyond. If your business is interested in a partnership with My WiSH, we’d love to hear from you. We can help you create something rewarding and enjoyable for your team, while also making a real difference to our community. Through a partnership, together we can raise funding that could one day enhance the care you, your colleagues, your friends, or your family receives.

Latest news from A buzzy time of year It’s that time of year when even more insects seem about, so taking care not to get bitten, or dealing with any bites ASAP, is vitally important for those with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema.

Using an effective insect repellent spray, repellent bracelets and patches, can help. If you are unlucky enough to get bitten, treat the bite straight away and, if swelling or a

reaction occurs, do contact your pharmacist, GP and/or the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service, or even dial 111, for advice and how best to treat the bite straight away.

LSS’s 5th October meeting Unfortunately, we had to cancel our 3rd August meeting, but very luckily our speaker, Kerry Frances, Lymphoedema Nurse from North Essex Health Trust, can make our 5th October meeting. Kerry will be demonstrating armchair yoga and also telling us all about the benefits of this to those with lymphoedema and lipoedema. Yoga is excellent exercise for helping to keep the lymphatic fluids moving and armchair yoga makes this available to those who aren’t as steady on their feet or find standing up for too long difficult.

A thought for September… Or really any time of the year, taking the time to say hello, thank you or seeing how someone is doing, can really make such a such difference to someone’s day. It doesn’t have to be big gesture, sending a message, a card or giving someone a ring can help brighten their day and let them know that someone is thinking of them or that you have appreciated how they have helped you.

2026 LSS MEETINGS October 5th and December 7th 7pm – 9pm in Room 2 at Moreton Hall Community Centre. There is no joining fee or referral needed. Do come along and find out more about living with, and managing, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema in a relaxed and friendly setting, along with enjoying a cuppa and slice of cake.

Specific duties involve: • half-termly supervision meetings with the preschool leader

We are due to hold an AGM in October to vote on new committee members. All committee members need appropriate DBS and Ofsted checks prior to joining the committee.

JANET WELCOMES YOU TO CPSG… If pain is part of your life, please read on. It may be time to recognise that you need support from other people who are also struggling too. The Bury St Edmunds Chronic Pain Support Group could offer that help. There are help groups everywhere for specific illnesses. They play a vital part in providing help to sufferers of these illnesses. Our group fills a gap. We will not tell you how to manage those illnesses, but we will try and help you cope with your pain. It is amazing how being with people who understand, can really help. We do this by meeting up once a month at Southgate Community Centre with speakers, followed by delicious home baked cakes and a chat.

We also meet up there once a month, on the first Thursday, for our “Craft” sessions. Meeting between 1.30pm – 4pm in the afternoon. If you enjoy crafting, drop by and meet some of the group. The following Monday after “Crafty”, we get together at The Dragonfly Hotel for our monthly coffee morning at 10.30am. The hotel makes us very welcome, and it is a great time to drop in and have a chat, Normally, we do avoid getting too involved with talking too much medical information at the Dragonfly, it is time to relax and have a laugh amongst friends. Time to try and forget about the pain for a couple of hours. Unless of course you do need somebody to listen, then someone will always be there to do that. To listen and to understand.

I can remember when l joined the group, over 10 years ago. I was quite nervous, not sure that it was the sort of “thing” l would want to be involved in. Now, 10 years later, l look forward to going to meetings and coffee mornings. I never miss one, unless l am unable to go because of my health. I know, if l asked other members what they feel, they would all feel the same way. We are there for each other. We respect each other’s privacy. No one will ask you what your illness is, but if you decide to tell somebody, that will be fine. Why not pick a time and visit us at one of our meetings, you will be made very welcome, or pop into the Dragonfly for a coffee and a chat.

DIARY DATES Positively Crafty – Thursday 3rd September from 1.30pm-4pm Coffee Morning – Monday 7th September from 10.30am at The Dragonfly Hotel

Speaker Meeting – Thursday 17th September from 2pm-4pm Both meetings

are held at Southgate Community Centre

Need more from your existing solar installation? If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours. A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it. If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage. Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

The wonder of otters

www.larkwoodlakes.co.uk

In my last article I mentioned that the re-introduction of otters into the area was one of the reasons for the demise of Larkwood lakes as a trout fishery. This month I thought it would be a good idea to take a closer look at this amazing mammal. We see constant evidence of otter activity around the reserve, usually in the form of spraint (otter poo) and regurgitated food, but it is only on seven occasions that I have seen them active in daylight hours. They are generally a nocturnal hunter and I have gathered lots of footage of otters at night on my trail camera over the last 6 years. But this daylight encounter was a special moment.

This thought was also inspired by an event yesterday that had my heart thumping with excitement. I was walking round Glebe lake along a path close to an area we whimsically call the ‘Black lagoon’. There was a sudden commotion in the undergrowth to my right, my immediate thought was ‘Muntjac’ I expected to see a small deer bounding away in quick retreat. Not on this occasion, a sleek, low-slung animal with a long round tail crashed out of the vegetation, sprinted across the path in-front of me, burst through the reeds at the side of the lagoon and splashed into the water. It took a second to process the whole scene but I had just had a very close encounter with a large male otter. Events like this make everything we do at the lakes worthwhile.

Otters live in family groups which have an interesting hierarchical social structure to help with their survival. There is a dominant breeding pair which lead activities such as foraging and territory defence. Lower down the hierarchy, subordinate members assist in caring for younger otters. This social structure is maintained through displays of dominance, vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. I believe it was the Suffolk Wildlife Trust The hierarchy influences feeding who re-introduced otters into the area patterns, grooming behaviours, and we are now blessed with a healthy and protection against predators. population living in and around the Dominant otters secure better access River Lark. BURY ST EDMUNDS

Cricket Club Bury St Edmunds have had a very busy cricket season, with only one week to date having been rain affected, probably more matches have taken place than ever before. The club owes a huge debt of gratitude to Parkers Pitches and the outstanding work they have done. These very dry conditions create a great deal of extra work, applying water to the pitches is vital because without it matches could not been played. Very dry pitches can be very dangerous due to uneven bounce and there have been instances during the season where matches have had to be abandoned for player safety. Generally the surfaces have been good, the outfield being very dry means that the ball with zip to the boundary at a rapid pace. The club appreciates all the volunteers who help in many ways, without their support it would be impossible to provide the vast amount of cricket that has taken place.

A highlight for the season has been the excellent performances of the Bury St Edmunds Under 17 team (see image) who have won their under 17 league, there have been many outstanding performances from these young payers which bodes well for the future. The senior team have gained a place in the final of the Suffolk Cup, a competition we have won the last two years. The final will take place at the end of the season.

The waiting game Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church How many of us put our patience to the test regularly. I have had the pleasure of staying in the Lake district for a few days this summer and while the welcome change of temperature meant we could see our green and pleasant land, I also travelled and stayed with extended family. This meant for a variety of reasons our time was in other people’s hands. At times this gave me the opportunity to sit for longer than I would usually do, and it also tested my patience while waiting for family members to collectively be ready to go out. Like most people I enjoy the freedom to do what I want when I can especially while on holiday. So, when this freedom is taken away frustration can grow. I recently told a story in church of using some time I had to sit with some ladies I know in my classes, and rather than trying to fill the conversation in, I let both of them talk, and tell me

about how God had prevented some real disasters happening. It was a wonderful time for me to remember sometimes being patient and allowing others to fill the gap of time I can learn so much more about other people, as well as life itself. Jesus shows time and time again that it is important to be patient not just with ourselves, but with others: 1 Timothy 1:16 “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” Learning Patience from Jesus In our walk as Christians, we are called to emulate Jesus and reflect His character in our lives. Patience is one of the most prominent characteristics of Jesus that we need to imitate.

SEPTEMBER 2026 | 53

When we encounter difficulties, trials, or even just the mundane aspects of life, we must remember how Jesus has handled each situation with grace and composure. By observing Jesus’ patience through His time on earth, we can gather strength to patiently endure our own challenges, trusting that God is in control every step of the way. Luke 21:19 “Stand firm, and you will win life.” I have learnt that being a parent is not always about having the answers to my children’s problem’s, but being patient enough to see them find the solutions for themselves.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Even the birds reveal the wonder of creation. Bill Oddie died recently aged 85. He became a household name in the 1970s as part of the much-loved TV comedy trio the Goodies, before devoting himself to his lifelong passion for wildlife. As one of the original presenters of BBC TV’s Springwatch, and many other programmes about birds and the natural world, he became one of Britain’s best-known champions of conservation. Paying tribute, his former co-host Kate Humble told Radio 4’s The World At One: ‘He just had that way of just making the natural world everybody’s world, and I think that’s what we all loved about him.’ Chris Packham described him as ‘a renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard’ – funny, passionate, unpredictable, and fiercely protective of the natural world. I have to confess that I’m no ornithologist though my friend Barry at Church is a keen and knowledgeable birder and travels miles with his binoculars – even overseas. Yet, over time, I have become increasingly conscious of, and grateful for, the birds around me.

They’re an integral part of God’s good creation, brought into being alongside the creatures of the sea on the fifth day of the creation story. Companions through the seasons, we can be comforted by the presence of curlews, and enjoy trying to distinguish between swallows and swifts flying over our gardens in summer. We treasure the robin’s faithful visits and observe the spring hard work of nesting great tits in boxes we have provided. Perhaps that was Bill Oddie’s great gift: he helped people see that birds were not simply background noise, but creatures of beauty, mystery, and wonder. He showed that paying attention to the natural world can awaken curiosity and nurture

a deeper care for creation. Jesus himself told his disciples to ‘look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them’. (Matthew 6:26). Watching birds requires patience, stillness, and careful observation. In a fast-changing and distracted world. Perhaps we need to recover the ability to notice: to pay attention to one another, to Scripture, to God and to the world he has made. If Bill Oddie’s legacy is that more people stop and marvel at the creatures around them, then he may leave us with a profoundly timely gift – and challenge. Bob, with thanks to LICC for inspiration.

The band’s extraordinary voyage began back in 1973, when courtesy of an impromptu ‘jam session,’ the original eight man lineup chanced upon an instant musical chemistry, the likes of which immediately grabbed the small audience’s attention, perhaps suggestive of things yet to come. In the next decade a staggering 23 Top 40 hit singles followed, including hits like ‘Under The Moon of Love’, ‘When’, ‘You Got What It Takes’, ‘Three Steps To Heaven’ and ‘Hey Rock ‘n’ Roll’, to name but a few, which eclipsing all expectations went on to grace the charts in more than thirty territories.

THE 19TH HOLE BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month see’s us move into our last month of summer and what a summer of golf it has been. The courses have been very firm and bouncy. In September we still have some massive golfing events to look forward to on both Tour’s and we also have local interest in the biggest amateur team event the WALKER CUP! Lahinch will stage the 51st Walker Cup between Great Britain and Ireland and the United States of America on Saturday, 5 and Sunday 6, September 2026. The renowned links, which is situated on the northwest coast of County Clare in Ireland, will host the international match for the first time in its history when the two sides meet in the biennial encounter.

So this year the GB&I team will be looking for a stronger showing on home soil and stop the period of domination from the USA. LOCAL INTEREST! We have a player from our area playing in The Walker Cup this year. For those of you that follow golf you will have heard of Tyler Weaver. Tyler is currently the world number 2 in the amateur rankings and will be playing in his second Walker Cup in September. We wish Tyler and the team every success for the event.

COACHES CORNER: THREE GREAT PUTTING DRILLS So this month I have THREE great drills that will help the most important areas of your putting, STRIKE, START LINE and SPEED. This area of the game is so important but maybe not practiced as much as it should be. This month’s drills are not with a training aid that will cost loads of money but with TEE PEGS, that you all will have in your golf bag already. This drill will assist you with STRIKE, one of the most over

looked aspect of putting. Striking you’re putts from the center of the club face will allow you to get better distance control. DRILL: Make a gate with two tee pegs either end of your putter, start wider than needed and as you become more confident close the gap up. STRIKE PUTTS BETTER!! Moving on now from STRIKE we will now look at START POINT, this drill allows you to focus on the line on which you want your putt to roll down. DRILL: Again make a gate either side of your intended start line, at first make this gate wide and as you become more confident close the gate up. START PUTTS ON YOUR LINE!

pegs, its up to you what distances you choose. I set up 10ft, 20ft and 30ft. Being able to consistently judge these distances will give you a great base on the course to judge putts that are longer or shorter.

The last area is distance control; this is a simple drill that you can set up before teeing off that will allow to adjust to the pace of the greens for that day. DRILL: Set up THREE distances with some tee

If you are struggling with this or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more. 62 | SEPTEMBER 2026
