Welcome to the October issue October is the month when autumn really starts to make itself at home. The leaves are changing, the jumpers are back out and with Halloween at the end of the month and Bonfire Night just around the corner, there’s plenty happening over the next few weeks. We’re firmly in soup season, so there’s another warming recipe on page 42! This month it’s Roasted Butternut Squash, Sage & Pumpkin Seed Soup – and yes, we know we had soup last month too, but it’s hard to resist at this time of year! There’s a new addition at Larkwood Lakes, too, with The Roaming Sauna now a permanent feature. This sauna on wheels offers lakeside sauna sessions, cold-water plunges and a chance to slow down and enjoy the outdoors. Find out more about this unique local experience on page 48. Also this month, we meet Derek Hall, the resident clock repairer at Bury St Edmunds Repair Café. His lifelong fascination with clocks has led to a real talent for bringing treasured timepieces back to life. Read more on page 36. There’s more to discover throughout this issue, from local news and events to the businesses and community groups that make our area such a great place to live. Enjoy October, and we’ll be back next month with more local stories and features.

The Centre was alive with the sound of music over the Summer. First in August the multi-instrumentalist skills of Roger Cletheroe with family and friends entertained a packed enchanted audience with a Sunday afternoon concert “Let All The World Sing” – raising an amazing £1250 in aid of St Nicholas Hospice. Then in early September the Southgate Church Friendship Club for Seniors had a delicious afternoon Cream Tea with the delightful dulcet tones and harmonious music from Angel’s Delight flute and harp duo. Music was most certainly the food of love, play on and give us excess of it!

Local author publishes five novels to help animals
The five novels by Levity Brown
Local author Levity Brown has turned her storytelling into a fundraising opportunity by publishing five quirky, unique novels. The books, written under the pen name of Levity Brown between 2010 and 2012, were penned as an attempt to save a Norfolk library from closing. The stories proved very popular, but a move to Bury St Edmunds meant she shelved the books for over 10 years.
Then, a chance meeting with a local company that supports authors led to the five books finally being published. “Each story has a twist to it,” Levity explains. “I always describe them as the What if… elements. What if you could alter the course of history? What if you could live in a better world? And so on. A good story is a great place to go on a rainy day, and I have loved writing these books.”
“The five novels were always intended to entertain and also do some good in the world, so the profits from the books will be going to animal charities. I love animals, so it seems fitting that sales of my books will go to help find new homes for unwanted pets.” Well known locally, Levity Brown already has interest from several businesses in the area, who want to hold copies of her books.
You can find out more about her writing and buy the books at
www.levitybrown.co.uk
Baby Loss Awareness Week: 9 to 15 October October marks Baby Loss Awareness Week, which runs from 9 to 15 October. It is an incredibly difficult subject to discuss, but as a charity we are passionate about supporting families during one of the most heartbreaking experiences imaginable, alongside the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s bereavement team.
One key project we have funded is the bereavement suite: a dedicated room with an en-suite bathroom and small kitchen area, providing a peaceful and private space where families can spend time together. We provide a cuddle cot, enabling babies
to stay with their families for longer, with WSFT’s dedicated bereavement midwives on hand to provide support and help families create precious memories using our memory boxes. Each box contains keepsake
trinkets, as well as a keepsake box for a lock of hair, an ink kit to capture handprints and footprints, a knitted blanket generously donated by our knitting community, and two knitted bunnies, kindly donated by the local SANDS group.
Find out more about My WiSH Charity at @mywishcharity
mywishcharity
www.mywishcharity.co.uk
The boxes also contain a book called ‘When I See a Sparkle’, written by former NHS employee Helen Davies and illustrated by local artist Kim Whittingham. More recently, we introduced free hand-casting services and work with Sparkle & Co of Bury St Edmunds to offer these where appropriate. We also work closely with the early pregnancy unit to support families who experience the loss of a baby before 16 weeks. We provide colouring books to help patients pass the time while on the ward, and items that enable staff to sensitively present the baby
to families. As a charity, we are committed to enhancing care. If anything we provide can make even the smallest difference to a family during their darkest moments, then we have achieved our goal. One person who has experienced the impact of this support is Rhiannon Lawson. Rhiannon and her husband, Mike sadly had to end their pregnancy in early 2025. Since then, Rhiannon has dedicated herself to fundraising in memory of their son, Hudson, helping to ensure that we can continue supporting bereaved families for years to come as well as supporting the neonatal unit who supported her when
her second son, Lochlan, arrived eight weeks early. To date, she has raised more than £40,000, which is truly incredible. We encourage you to visit our My WiSH Charity YouTube channel and watch Rhiannon’s video, where she shares her story, explains why she chose to support My WiSH, and highlights the difference these services make across maternity care within the Trust. For more information regarding access to support, visit the SANDS website at: www.sands.org.uk
If you would like to find out more about My WiSH and the work we do, please head to mywishcharity.co.uk.
Welcome to... Hardwick Primary School Claire Flatman, Executive Headteacher – 01284 755 424
We look forward to welcoming you We are incredibly proud of our wonderful new Reception children in Donaldson Class and the fantastic start they have made to their school journey. They have amazed us with how quickly they have settled, embracing new routines, making new friendships and growing in confidence every day. Their enthusiasm, smiles and positive attitudes have been an absolute joy to see. Our children have thrown themselves into exploring their new indoor and outdoor environments with a real sense of awe, wonder and curiosity. They are
becoming increasingly independent, brave and confident learners who are keen to investigate, ask questions and have a go at new things. We could not be prouder of everything they have achieved already and cannot wait to see them continue to flourish throughout their first year with us. Hardwick Primary School warmly invites prospective families to come and discover what makes our school such a special place to learn and grow. Situated on Steward Road in Bury St Edmunds, we are proud to serve our local community and provide a welcoming, inclusive and nurturing environment

Volunteer Spotlight:
Derek Hall Meet Derek Hall, the resident clock repairer at the Bury St Edmunds Repair Café! Now enjoying retirement after a fulfilling career in engineering, Derek spends his time in his home workshop, bringing clocks back to life. When he’s not tinkering, you can find him tackling his endless home improvement projects, helping out with his grandchildren, or volunteering at his local parkrun on Saturday mornings.

Derek’s fascination with clocks began at the tender age of five, when his grandfather gifted him a box of old clocks. He fondly recalls the hours spent disassembling them, even if reassembly proved to be a bit challenging! Over the years, he has become an associate member of the British Horological Institute, deepening his knowledge and skills.
Thankfully, they hadn’t shared that before the repair, or Derek might have approached it with extra caution!
Inspired by a TV series and a successful clock repair for a work colleague, Derek became involved in his local repair café. One of his most memorable projects was a beautiful carriage clock that, despite being in good shape overall, wasn’t operational. Upon returning it to its owner, he was touched to hear that it was one of the items they would definitely save if they ever had a house fire.
Nowadays, when asked to repair particularly valuable items, Derek prefers to refer owners to accredited repairers. He finds immense joy in reviving mechanisms that have been silent for too long, although he jokes that some owners might curse him when their clock starts chiming at unsociable hours. Derek understands that the sentimental value of a clock – its history, its place in the 36 | OCTOBER 2026
home, and the sound of its chimes – often outweighs the mere function of telling time. Need more from your existing solar installation? If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours. A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it. If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage. Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

The Roaming Sauna
www.larkwoodlakes.co.uk
One of the great things about our nature reserve is that we can share it with a few businesses which agree with our ethos that the environment and wildlife come first. None of them have any real impact on the reserve and we love the fact that they make sure all their guests respect the flora and fauna. We are always looking for new businesses to join our team and we are now delighted to welcome ‘The Roaming Sauna’ run by Sophie. It all started with a chance meeting when Kim and I visited a wellbeing retreat near Bury St Edmunds. We struck up a conversation with Sophie and after a chat about Larkwood Lakes, she mentioned that she was looking for a new venue to run her business. As it turned out the lakes are a perfect fit for her. As you may have deduced, ‘The Roaming Sauna’ is a sauna on wheels. It’s beautifully decked out as a conventional sauna with the added bonus of a drop front and windows which means that you can sit in heated bliss with a view over West Stow Lake. After your sauna there are several ways to cool off, pop under an outside cold shower, then maybe into a plunge bath and for the more adventurous into a sectioned off area of West Stow Lake. In the words of Sophie – “The Roaming Sauna is more than just about the deep heat and contrasting cold water plunges… it’s about
bringing people together to slow down, spend time outdoors and share something simple. From quiet sunrise sessions and slow daytime saunas, to golden sunset evenings and firelit nights under the stars, each gathering has its own rhythm. You might find yourself sat around the firepit chatting with someone you’ve just met, moving between the sauna and fresh air, or looking up at the sky on a clear night. Whether it’s a gentle reset or a full moon gathering, it’s a space where everyone is welcome.” ‘The Roaming Sauna’ will be a permanent feature at the lakes from now on and the opening times are as follows: Thursday & Friday 15:30 - 20:15 Saturday 09:00 - 20:00 Sunday 09:00 - 13:45 In addition to the sauna, Sophie has linked to Sarah and ‘Create Space Collective’, through this collaboration she offers Sound baths Yoga and wellness retreats. Her final offering is traditional guided sauna rituals, this sounds fascinating, and I can’t wait to have a go. If you are interested in speaking to

BURY ST EDMUNDS
Cricket Club The cricket season finished in mid-September with the Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club’s Presentation Evening (pictured). It has been a season dominated by the dry season where spin bowling has often proved more effective than pace. However plenty of runs have been scored and thanks to the work of Parker’s Pitches the playing conditions excellent. The Junior Presentation Evening gave the opportunity to celebrate boys and girls
from age 9, the emphasis being enjoying the game and rewarding outstanding performances. The players were able to vote on their sides players player. The Victory Sports Ground has hosted more games of cricket than ever, not only Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club but matches for Suffolk Cricket featuring the men’s 3 day game against Northumberland which resulted in a close encounter with Suffolk winning. Matches for all Suffolk age groups at over 50, 60 and 70 teams. In addition boys and
girls matches for a wide age range under 14 to under 18 matches. Beyond Suffolk matches the ground has hosted Disability Cricket sessions, the Boys and Girls Knight Stokes Schools Regional Finals. The recent Ladies Softball Festival featured 12 ladies teams with matches spread across the main ground which was an amazing spectacle. The ground has suffered due to the dry summer and will need considerable investment to restore the grass surfaces.

Do you live in the moment? Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church I have had a few conversations with my husband about trying to live in the moment as we are always thinking of tomorrow or planning months ahead. It is difficult with the endless ways we are connected with the world through IT, but is there a way to be connected with what is happening right now for each of us without all the technology? The Bible teaches several principles that relate to the idea of “living in the moment,” emphasising mindfulness, gratitude, and trust in God for the present and future: Matthew 6:34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In this verse, Jesus encourages focusing on the present day and trusting God with future concerns. Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” This verse
encourages rejoicing in the present day as a gift from God. These are just some of the passages collectively encouraging believers to live fully in the present, trusting in God’s provision, being thankful, and making the most of each day with purpose and mindfulness. But even if you don’t have a ‘Faith’ I encourage you to just be still for a few minutes each day and remind yourself of what has been helpful to you and what you can do to pass on that helpfulness to others. After 8 very busy weeks with our oldest daughter coming home, she has returned to Australia, and it is very hard to come to terms with her happiness being found so far away. But in her time with us we bonded more as a family and made the effort to be together. We talked more, and sat together more, and I reflect on that time as a gift. If you have siblings or grown-up children you
OCTOBER 2026 | 53
realise how different each of us are, but that family bond helps us be there for each other, and that is Jesus’s message that we should be there for one another Even if it means not planning ahead but ‘Living in the moment’? I have to say I am very grateful for the pause button on our television which means who ever bursts into the lounge and needs to talk, I can put the TV on pause and concentrate on what is so important to whoever comes in. (It is usually our middle daughter who is full of things to say). Sometimes I reflect on why I believe the TV is so important surely nothing is as important as a catch up with family or friends? But in the moment, there is that feeling of irritation through the disruption, but sometimes technology can bring peace of mind that you can stop what you’re doing and return to it at your convenience. Whether you can press pause or not how about ‘living in the moment’

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Shaped by one another At other times, we learn from one another when we upset each other, because afterwards we reflect on our poor behaviour, humble ourselves and learn from our mistakes.
When my daughter was young, she had a friend over to play. But when the girl had left, we noticed that a treasured pink camera had disappeared. My daughter was very upset about this and so the next day she asked her friend if she had taken the camera? At first the girl denied it. But my daughter said to her: “If you admit that you took my camera, give it back and say sorry I will forgive you, but if you won’t then we can’t be friends” The camera soon returned and a few weeks later the little girl was back in our house, playing and having tea. Sarah and I told our daughter that we were very impressed with the way that she had forgiven her friend and resumed their friendship. But she said: “Oh I had to, because in Sunday School we looked at a bible passage where Jesus said that Christians have to keep forgiving each
other again and again, not seven times, but seventyseven times!” At the time, I remember thinking as a vicar, I can preach a fine-sounding sermon on forgiveness, but would I forgive like and 8-year-old?” Well, it seems to me that most of us learn how to be a Christian from one another. Sometimes it’s by seeing people displaying amazing courage in a difficult situation and we are challenged to take bolder steps of faith ourselves. On another occasion we might hear of someone giving away a large amount of money and so we’re inspired to be more generous in future.
However, being a member of a church family is often testing, isn’t it? But I believe, that in the long run learning to bear with each other is good for us! Because over time we soften and mature through being together. Perhaps this is why Jesus called people to follow him together and why he created the church. It’s imperfect, but it’s still the best place to grow more like him. Because as we worship, pray and serve one another we do gradually become more godly. We are a bit like the stones on the seashore, smoothed by years of rubbing up against one another. Mike Simm Minister of Southgate Church.

Our speaker Sandra Gold-Wood gave us an interesting and eyeopening account of the lives of the WW1 and WW2 Canary Girls, who worked as munition workers. They earned their nickname because prolonged exposure to dangerous chemicals such as TNT and cordite stained
their skin and hair yellow. As well as the visible effects of working with chemicals there were other health risks such as liver disease, together with the ever-present danger of working with explosives. Explosions were a common occurrence. One of the largest of these occurred in Silvertown in East London in 1917, when 73 people were killed and over 400 injured. In addition, the munitions factories were key targets for enemy air raids, adding
another element of danger for those working at them. The exact number of munitions workers who were killed or injured during both world wars is still unknown. They are the much-forgotten heroines of the two World Wars and The Canary Girls Memorial Project aims to get recognition of the war work of the Canary Girls and to have a memorial installed at the National Memorial Arboretum to commemorate them.
