Welcome to the June issue

June is here, and with it comes the real start of summer –longer days, warmer evenings, and plenty of reasons to get outside and make the most of it.

The World Cup is kicking off*, with England’s first game on 17th June against Croatia, bringing an extra buzz to homes, pubs, and get-togethers across the country.

Don’t forget Father’s Day on 21st June. Whether you’re spending time with a father figure or simply spending time with family, a great chance to get together and catch up.

We also want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Michelle from Crafty Foxes, who has been sharing her lovely creative ideas with us for over five years. We’re incredibly grateful for all the time and inspiration she’s given to readers. As her schedule gets busier, she’ll be stepping back from her monthly contributions, but you can still keep up with her at www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk.

As always, we’re proud to showcase the brilliant local businesses that help make this magazine possible. Please do support them, they really are at the heart of the community.

We hope you enjoy this issue, and make the most of the month ahead, and we’ll be back with more in July!

*Will it be coming home? We’ll know more next issue, but fingers crossed!

Bluestone Paving & Decking

Every year many hedgehogs are seriously injured or killed by cutting machines in the garden.

Please check grass and hedges thoroughly before using mowers, strimmers, or hedge cutters.

A hedgehog’s natural defence is to roll in a ball rather than run away, but their spines are no match for a strimmer.

Anxious, stressed, low or depressed?

We’re here to help you

We offer free mental health support in Suffolk to people aged 16 or over.

You can self-refer for talking therapy (without seeing your GP) and access a large range of online workshops by visiting our website or giving us a call.

Moreton Hall WI

Our AGM is always a great opportunity to look back at the past year of WI activity and this year was no exception. We enjoyed monthly talks from a wide variety of speakers as well as regular lunches at the Moreton Hall pub. With the Committee and President elected our 2026/2027 year is underway and several events are planned in addition to our monthly meetings.

Our speaker at our May meeting was Charlie De Moore who is the Events and Community Fund Raising Manager for St Nicholas Hospice. Charlie gave a presentation covering the history of the Hospice to all the services it offers to the community today, as well as its fundraising and events. Whilst the Hospice does receive a small amount of NHS funding, it costs £28,000 a day to keep

the Hospice and all its services running, so the shortfall is made up from grants, legacies and fundraising. The Hospice, like many organisations, is reliant on its volunteers, over 200 of them, to help keep its services, shops, and events running. Charlie thanked MHWI for nominating the Hospice as its 2026 charity. Members were asked to give a donation for refreshments to help with MHWI’s fundraising efforts.

We are a friendly group and, if you would like more information, please do get in touch with Alison on 07557 005343 or follow us on Facebook.

Local author publishes five novels to help animals

Local author Levity Brown has turned her storytelling into a fundraising opportunity by publishing five quirky, unique novels.

The books, written under the pen name of Levity Brown between 2010 and 2012, were penned as an attempt to save a Norfolk library from closing. The stories proved very popular, but a move to Bury St Edmunds meant she shelved the books for over 10 years.

Then, a chance meeting with a local company that supports authors led to the five books finally being published.

“Each story has a twist to it,” Levity explains. “I always describe them as the What if… elements. What if you could alter the course of history? What if you could live in a better world? And so on. A good story is a great place to go on a rainy day, and I have loved writing these books.”

“The five novels were always intended to entertain and also do some good in the world, so the profits from the books will be going to animal charities. I love animals, so it seems fitting that sales of my books will go to help find new homes for unwanted pets.”

Well known locally, Levity Brown already has interest from several businesses in the area, who want to hold copies of her books.

Making a difference – how your donations support your local hospital trust

Every day our office receives donations of gratitude, and each one tells a story.

At My WiSH Charity, we support the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WFST). Donations come from patients and families who want to say thank you, perhaps for life changing treatment or compassionate care. Whatever the reason, we deeply value these donations and ensure they are put to good use.

Turning generosity into impact

We work closely with the NHS staff who care for us all. They see first hand what could make a real difference to patient care. They bring us ideas, and, through our grant process, we ensure donations enhance services beyond what the NHS is able to provide.

The result? Thoughtful, practical improvements that support patients of all ages.

Helping children feel safe and supported

Our WiSH Upon A Star Children’s appeal has had a remarkable impact. Donations have funded extra equipment as well as something equally important, play.

Toys are far more than entertainment. They help therapists assess development, support rehabilitation, and provide distraction during difficult procedures. We’ve supplied

these resources not only to hospital wards, but also to health and child development centres across Suffolk.

We’ve also invested in innovative tools to reduce anxiety. Working with the in-house IT team, we’ve funded software to provide educational videos that show children what to expect before a hospital visit, helping to ease fears before they even arrive.

For children with complex needs, donations have enabled us to provide specialist equipment including walkers, therapy aids, communication tools for non-verbal patients, and paediatric wheelchairs. A particularly generous donation funded an interactive projector on the Rainbow Ward, transforming playtime into an immersive and joyful experience.

Supporting adult care and recovery

Donations also make a significant difference to adult services. In critical care, a specialist neurological chair is helping patients safely transition from bed to sitting, supporting recovery

at a crucial stage. On the stroke unit, funding has provided tailored clocks for patients with cognitive difficulties, additional wheelchairs, and mobile entertainment systems along with improvements to staff spaces, recognising the importance of supporting those who care for others.

We’ve also helped enhance comfort for new parents, funding reclining chairs so birthing partners can stay overnight more easily.

In the community, ten sets of scales now allow nurses to weigh patients in their own homes, ensuring accurate treatment without the need for hospital visits. A small change with a big impact.

For patients recovering from knee or hip surgery, therapy equipment such as steps and exercise pedals is helping people regain mobility sooner.

Investing in knowledge and innovation

Beyond equipment, we also support staff development and research. While essential training is funded by the NHS, we provide opportunities for staff to expand their expertise whether through specialist cancer courses, autism training, cardiac education, or neuromuscular studies. We’re also proud to support research projects, including a current trial exploring adaptive cutlery to improve mealtime independence for patients.

A small charity with a big reach

Though we are a small charity, the scope of our work is wide. From children taking their first steps in therapy, to patients recovering at home, your donations make a tangible difference every single day.

If you’d like to learn more about how we support your local NHS services, we’d love to hear from you.

Welcome to... Hardwick Primary School

Learning in action at Hardwick Education beyond the classroom

The children in Rabbits class enjoyed a memorable day at Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm. They had close encounters with a variety of animals, including friendly goats, gentle ponies, playful pigs and, of course, the adorable Baylham bunnies.

It was heart-warming to see their faces light up as they interacted with these lovely creatures as can be seen in the montage.

In addition to meeting the animals, the children took part in a den-building activity in the woodland area.

This hands-on experience allowed them to explore nature and use their creativity to construct shelters using only the materials they found around them. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to develop teamwork skills and learn more about the environment while having fun.

Then our Year One children had an absolutely fantastic day visiting Banham Zoo. The children loved exploring the zoo, spotting lots of amazing animals and learning all about them throughout the day. They also thoroughly enjoyed

taking part in the workshop, where they discovered even more exciting facts about the animal world. There were smiles, excitement and plenty of tired legs by the end of the trip.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all the staff and parent volunteers who gave their time and support to make this special trip possible, and especially the Friends of Hardwick Primary who funded the coach travel.

Your help ensured the children had such a rich and enjoyable experience, and it was greatly appreciated.

Giving a different perspective

LSS’s meetings offer support to patients, and their partners, by meeting with others who understand about living with and managing the same or similar lifelong chronic health conditions.

Sharing information, learning new skills and tips can help to boost self esteem, reduce anxiety and help with overall sense of well being. LSS’s meetings have varied guest speakers or themed coffee chat evenings to help patients by

giving a different perspective on managing their conditions, ideas to try and also helping patients to take control of how they do this. Taking small steps and making small adjustments can make all the difference and be rewarding too.

Exercise plays an important part in coping with living with Lymphoedema and Lipodema and with the health maintenance of these chronic conditions. It doesn’t have to be marathon running or mountain climbing - doing housework and gardening count as exercise!

However you exercise the important thing is to do it regularly, so Keep Moving. Doing Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) massages twice a day can help to reduce painful fluid retention. Using an extendable handheld roller to massage arms and legs can also be beneficial. Always remember to massage in an upwards direction whether doing SLD or if using a roller (these can be ordered from Amazon, Argos and other similar retailers).

Where Indoor Meets Out, Blurring The Lines of Modern Living

This year marks 80 years of Glasswells, and in that time few areas of the home have evolved as dramatically as the garden. What was once a purely seasonal space is now a true extension of the homedesigned for dining, relaxing and entertaining. Outdoor living is no longer reserved for summer; it has become part of everyday life.

Over the years, I’ve seen a clear shift in how customers approach their gardens. They’re no longer simply looking for a furniture setthey’re creating outdoor rooms, spaces that feel as comfortable and considered as their interiors. Whether hosting barbecues, enjoying a quiet morning coffee, or welcoming friends and family, the right combination of carefully chosen furniture, landscaping, shade and shelter can transform any outdoor area into a retreat that can be enjoyed all year round.

Comfort and longevity are now central to these decisions. Deep seating, generous proportions and durable materials matter more than ever. Customers increasingly value well-made pieces that can withstand the unpredictability of British weather while retaining their look and feel season after season. It’s less about quick updates and more about

investing in furniture that genuinely enhances how the space is used.

“Customers are looking for garden furniture pieces that feel just as comfortable and considered as their indoor furniture.”

For 2026, the trend continues towards softer, warmer neutral tones - stone, linen, sand and muted greys - shades that sit beautifully against natural greenery. Classic rattan remains popular for its texture

and versatility, while aluminium has firmly established itself as one of our fastest-growing material categories.

Lightweight, corrosionresistant and low-maintenance, high-quality aluminium frames offer a contemporary look with long-term durability. Responsibly sourced teak remains a premium choice, valued for both its strength and timeless appeal.

Beyond aesthetics, there is a growing appreciation of the wellbeing benefits of outdoor living. Time spent in natural light and fresh air can boost

HELIOS 3M SQUARE ALUMINIUM PERGOLA

mood, reduce stress, and improve overall balance. Even a short period outside can reset the mind. Comfortable, thoughtfully chosen furniture makes it easier to enjoy these moments more often.

“It’s about creating spaces people genuinely want to spend time in.”

Many customers are now layering their outdoor spaces much like they would indoors. Pergolas, for example, have become an essential addition. Crafted from robust, weatherresistant aluminium, they provide shelter from sun and rain, extending the usability of a garden throughout the season. Optional side screens or louvred panels offer extra privacy and protection from wind, creating a space that feels sheltered and inviting.

Awnings offer a similarly practical solution, providing adjustable shade and protection from the elements outside the home, particularly above bifold doors across seating areas.

After eight decades, our mission remains unchanged: to help customers create homes they love. The garden has always been a place to gather, unwind and reconnect - and today, it plays an even more vital role in everyday living.

Sometimes, the most beautiful room in the house has no walls at all.

POSITIVELY CRAFTY

In our sessions we can get very engrossed in what we are doing that often the room can go silent, then someone would say something and we would all be laughing.

It would be great to see more people come and join us. Nothing we have made has been too difficult for non crafters to do. One of us would be willing to sit with you to make a card or do what ever you want to do. In fact we all help each other. Nothing is set in stone, you can either bring along your own type of crafting to do or join in with us. We will always encourage new skills.

After payment for hiring

the room, insurance, replacement of crafting materials, with any surplus funding to spare we have been able to spend some on new items for the group to use. We have all the basic tools and a die cutting machine. Some members bring their own tools and materials to share as well. Everyone has something nice to take home at the end of the session.

The room we use is quite large and airy, toilets are close and there are no steps or hazards in the room or entrance area so easily accessible for all mobility needs. Car parking is free for up to 3 hours.

It has been proven that Crafting is an excellent way to relax and we ourselves can vouch for that. It is worth coming along because half way through a session, we always have a drink and homemade cake. Sessions are light hearted and fun and we all achieve something out of them. We offer support, friendship and connection with others in a similar position.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

• 95% of customers recommend friends & family

• Full end-to-end service with great customer support

Planning developments updates

There are a number of proposed developments relevant to Moreton Hall. The Royal Mail application in relation to their staff parking had another round of consultation until 3rd June. We are waiting to hear when a final decision will be made but we are pushing the council hard because this issue has been going on for almost two years now. We are still waiting to hear about next steps for the development off Mount Road and for the big Rougham Airfield development. As always, the

Every Saturday the bar is available and the club has seen an increase in support this season which is very welcome.

The 1st team have won 4 of their first 6 matches and are placed 4th at this early stage of the East Anglian Cricket league.

We always knew the step up for the 2nd team would be difficult as in almost every match they are playing against good clubs 1st team who in most cases have a high quality coach with the ability to turn a match on their own, however the team are competing well and will get better as the season progresses.

The Father’s Day

I know on Mother’s Day I am often found telling my children that Mother’s day should be celebrated every day, as a parent we are always thinking of our children’s needs before our own. We are never at rest unless our children are happy, we provide stability, security, and sometimes just a hug to help them.

On June 21st we will celebrate Father’s day. Our opportunity to give thanks to those Fathers who may no longer be with us, those that are striving to do the best they can today, and those wishing to become fathers in the future. We celebrate this to show our love, our gratitude and our faith that each Father will continue to provide support, along with great teaching so that the future

generation can aspire to be the same.

This is so true for our Holy Father. It is right to have someone to look up to, not just in a spiritual sense, but in a way that we can reflect on our own actions, which we want to make all Father’s proud.

Sadly, many of us have lost our fathers, some may not know who their father is, but all of us can feel loved by The Father our God. He provided the way through Jesus’s teachings on earth and, Jesus taught many people the right way to lead their lives.

So, if you are not sending a card or meeting up with your father, perhaps you could meet our Father. You could pray, and he will

listen to your prayers. You could do something nice for someone else, and he will see your kindness. You may choose to attend a church service, and listen to the sermon, and our Father will know you have been. For wherever you are he is there with you. That is the wonderful thing about Faith you have the opportunity to unit like one big family, and it is our Father who has taught us this.

Perhaps like me you wish you could be like Peter Pan and never have to grow up and take responsibilities seriously. But John reminds us in the bible that God sees us all as his children, so whether you have a Father on this earth or not you are always loved, and you will always be his child.

On the 10th May, 1940, Hitler launched an invasion of France and the low countries. Rommel’s Panzer tanks surged across Europe in a pincer movement.

The German high command boasted that ‘The British army is encircled, and our troops are proceeding to its annihilation’. Britain’s only hope was to evacuate as many men as possible. Churchill said, in his memoirs, that at best, he hoped to save 20 or 30 thousand men. However, King George VI requested that Sunday 25th May be a National Day of Prayer. In a stirring radio broadcast, he called on the people of Great Britain to commit their cause to God. The nation responded. There were queues outside many churches!

And the result? Over the next few weeks three miracles happened. Firstly, for some unexplained reason, Hitler overruled his generals and halted the advance of his armoured columns when they were just 10 miles away from the

British Army. Then on the 28th May, an unprecedented storm broke out over Flanders and grounded the German Airforce, thus enabling the British Army to march the last 8 miles to the port of Dunkirk.

The third miracle was the calm that settled over the English Channel, enabling a vast armada of British boats of all sizes, to cross the channel. During that week, 335,000 men were rescued. Ten times as many as Churchill had hoped for. Sunday 9th June was declared a Day of National Thanksgiving!

C. B. Mortlock writing in the Daily Telegraph said ‘The prayers of the nation were answered, God rescued the

valiant men of the British Expeditionary Force’.

I wonder what you think about prayer..? I believe that when we pray things happen. I can’t explain how influential my prayers are or why some are answered and some aren’t, but as Archbishop William Temple once said: “When I pray coincidences happen. When I don’t, they don’t”.

In the bible, the early church did a lot of praying and amazing things then happened. They experienced the power of God. The church grew, people were healed, released from prison and escaped death.

But how can you pray? Well, Jesus told his followers that when they prayed they needn’t use lots of fancy religious words; that all they needed to do was to simply ask God for his help. Why not give it a try? You may be surprised by the answers.

It Comes In Waves

Tuesday 30th June

A grief café in Lowestoft, a town mourning the loss of its high street on a coastline that’s crumbling like rich tea biscuits.

After losing her hubby, ageing Crystal wants to ‘love laugh live’ but maybe she just needs to chill out. After losing Dad, teenage Jordan just wants to like, get grieving over and done with and that… but grief is messy and comes in waves right? Group leader Howard just wants to help everyone else…

Written by local writer James McDermott and drawing on his own experiences of bereavement after losing his father during the pandemic, ‘It Comes In Waves’ is a community-spirited coastal comedy drama that explores how grief comes in waves and asks how we can help each other to stay afloat when it hits.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, how are we already in June! Golf season is full flow now and we are onto major number 3. This month we are looking forward to yet more great competitions including the US Open.

The professionals have been entertaining us with their play throughout May. We saw a first major championship victory for Englishman Aaron Rai. Such an amazing achievement for him, and hearing his route to professional golf and how he see’s the game he is the perfect example for any junior golfer watching last month.

US OPEN PREVIEW

The U.S. Open, golf’s third major of the year, returns as one of the sport’s toughest tests, with players battling demanding conditions for a chance at history. This year’s championship takes place at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, a historic and windswept venue designed to challenge every

aspect of a player’s game, rewarding accuracy, precision, and smart shot-making. Defending champion JJ Spain returns after last year’s win at Oakmont, but with long, straight driving, sharp iron play, and strong putting all essential, the title is wide open.

COACHES CORNER: WATCH THE WORLDS BEST PLAYERS

Continuing on the major championship theme, I want to draw your attention to the TV coverage and how the players plan and play this venue.

Course management is so key around any course, pay attention to player/ caddy conversations and the numbers they talk about when planning out shots. Where they are looking to land shots to to either make an approach shot easier or to allow the player to have an easier putt.

Yes, I know what you are all thinking, they are the best players in the world and they can hit these shots on demand most of the time so it’s easier for them to make these plans. You are correct in a way….

HOWEVER, if you stand over a shot with a clear plan of what you want to do from tee to green this will allow you have make a fully committed swings each time you address the ball.

After the plan has been made another area to watch will be the players pre-shot routine. These will be bullet proof, they will do the same thing each and every time they play a shot. If anything disturbs this process they will reset and go through it again.

This allows them to stay committed to the plan they have made with their caddie and instills the confidence to perform the shot needed.

Watch and learn from the best in the world this month!

I hope this edition of the 19th Hole has helped, if you would like any advice or help with your golf game please get in contact. Here’s to a great time out on the golf course, and I will see you next month.
