YOUR CENTRE IMPROVES ALL THE TIME...

We have recently spent around £70,000 on a new boiler, replacing the one that has been around since the late 70s.

It’s all part of our continuing programme of investment in keeping the building in a great state.

We are very fortunate in having people of such commitment and quality as

Andy our Chair and Custodian and Jackie as our Centre Manager to ensure that our Centre continues to thrive.

Our three local councillorsSarah Stamp, Patrick Chung and Richard Rout are also great supporters, and help us financially on many occasions from their community allocations.

The NFWI Campaign, Bystanders

Can Be Lifesavers, aims to raise awareness about cardiac arrest and the use of defibrillators and at the speaker at our July meeting was Marie Honeyfield from Anglia CPR and First Aid.

She firstly highlighted the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest. The former is when the blood flow to the heart is severely reduced or blocked, usually due to plaque buildup in the arteries. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating effectively, often due to an electrical problem, and requires immediate CPR and defibrillation. Signs include unresponsiveness, abnormal or absent breathing, and no normal chest movement.

The recommended response in the first instance is to call 999, ask where the nearest AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is located,

check for danger, and assess the casualty using the “look, listen, and feel” method.

For adults, CPR should be performed at a rate of 100–120 beats per minute (the Bee Gees song ‘Staying Alive’ is a good example) with a depth of 5–6 cm using interlocking fingers and the heel of your hand in the centre of the chest for 30 chest compressions then rest followed by another 30 compressions. Continue until professional help arrives or the person shows signs of life. Rescue breaths are beneficial but not essential if the rescuer is untrained.

AEDs provide voice instructions, analyse the heart rhythm, and guide pad placement, making them safe and simple for anyone to use in an emergency. Anyone performing CPR will be covered by Sarah’s Law, better known as the Good Samaritan Law, which is a UK law aimed at protecting individuals who act responsibly in an emergency to help others.

Local author publishes five novels to help animals

Local author Levity Brown has turned her storytelling into a fundraising opportunity by publishing five quirky, unique novels.

The books, written under the pen name of Levity Brown between 2010 and 2012, were penned as an attempt to save a Norfolk library from closing. The stories proved very popular, but a move to Bury St Edmunds meant she shelved the books for over 10 years.

Then, a chance meeting with a local company that supports authors led to the five books finally being published.

“Each story has a twist to it,” Levity explains. “I always describe them as the What if… elements. What if you could alter the course of history? What if you could live in a better world? And so on. A good story is a great place to go on a rainy day, and I have loved writing these books.”

“The five novels were always intended to entertain and also do some good in the world, so the profits from the books will be going to animal charities. I love animals, so it seems fitting that sales of my books will go to help find new homes for unwanted pets.”

Well known locally, Levity Brown already has interest from several businesses in the area, who want to hold copies of her books.

Local businesses give back in Garden Appeal

My WiSH Charity has officially launched its new Garden Appeal, calling on businesses across West Suffolk to help transform and maintain vital green spaces at West Suffolk Hospital and the Newmarket Community Hospital.

The appeal aims to create and enhance hospital gardens that support patient recovery, improve wellbeing and provide peaceful places for families and NHS staff. Research has consistently shown that access to quality outdoor spaces can have a positive impact on both physical and mental health, making hospital gardens an important part of the healthcare environment.

The initiative offers local businesses the opportunity to sponsor a garden while also taking part in volunteering days throughout the year, helping with planting, landscaping and seasonal maintenance.

The charity is delighted to announce that Skechers and E G Grounds Care Ltd. have

become the first businesses to support the appeal as founding sponsors.

George Chilvers, Corporate Fundraising Manager at My WiSH Charity, said: “Hospital gardens are often overlooked, but they make a real difference to the people who use them every day. Patients, visitors and staff all benefit from having access to welcoming outdoor spaces. We’re incredibly grateful to Skechers and E G Grounds Care Ltd. for being the first businesses to support the Garden Appeal and help us get this exciting project underway.”

The appeal builds on the success of previous garden projects across the hospital site, including the Cancer Unit Garden, which has been maintained by staff from

British Gas since 2022, and the Rainbow Ward Garden, which was enhanced through a donation from Clarkes of Walsham.

Through sponsorship and volunteering, businesses can make a lasting contribution to the local NHS while providing meaningful team building and employee wellbeing opportunities for their staff.

Any organisation interested in supporting the Garden Appeal, sponsoring a garden, or arranging a corporate volunteering day is encouraged to contact George Chilvers at My WiSH Charity.

Bringing the magic of Peter Pan to life

Huge congratulations to all the children and staff involved in the Year 5/6 production of Peter Pan.

The singing, outstanding vocals, storytelling and performances were simply fantastic... especially in such warm conditions. Every child should be immensely proud of themselves for their confidence,

enthusiasm and hard work, and our staff for their dedication in making the show such a memorable success, we are proud of every single one of you.

We would like to recognise Miss Hinton, all of our amazing support staff and Miss Wellar-Poley for their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the production bringing the magic of Peter Pan to life.

Finally our heartfelt thank you to all of our parents and families for your wonderful support, from helping children learn their lines and songs at home, to providing costumes and cheering them on from the audience, your encouragement played such an important part in making the production a success.

What a show. Bravo, everyone.

SUMMER COOLING TIPS…

It’s best to avoid extreme temperatures as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s) rooms, which includes not sitting too close to heat sources such as bar-b-ques and outdoor heaters. Using a cooling spray, iced water in a spray bottle works well, on your compression garment can help cool the affected limb and yourself.

Incidentally, if you sit out on concrete or by a brick or whitewashed wall – the sun’s rays also reflect off these. Ultraviolet rays are invisible and are present in every season, so wearing sun protection isn’t something that you should reserve for a summery beach day or being on holiday. On a cloudy day up to 80% of UVA exposure

remains as compared to a sunny day and UVA light can also pass through windows, even when you are indoors or in your car. A tip from skin consultants - wear a face cream with a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 all year round. Protecting your skin from the sun is the best Anti-Ageing treatment there is!

GRIEF

Grief is a lonely place and no one can carry that burden for you. Grief is utterly unique, all consuming and can be emotionally exhausting. Grief can come at any time and in many forms. People grieve at different times and in different ways. Love is forever—don’t lock your grief for your loved one away.

Its okay to grieve, your whole life just changed beyond what anyone can imagine. Grief affects the whole body, permit yourself to feel your emotions. Grief can even cause pain and worsen painful inflammatory conditions as well as lowering your immunity. If you struggle to cope with the pain and it becomes debilitating, you feel stuck or the sadness interferes with your ability to function daily, you do not have to carry it alone, although grief can make you feel lonely, you are not alone. Seeking social support with others who have been in similar situations by sharing your experience has the ability to ease some of that hurt. Grief hurts because it’s a full body biological response

to losing a vital attachment and leaves a void nothing can fill. Pain is sudden, raw and often feels unmanageable.

The intensity is often severe as you navigate through the first year. Maintain communication in someways that is meaningful to you. Do an activity that restores your soul and makes your body feel alive. Time doesn’t take away the pain but has a way of smoothing out the rough edges.

Give yourself permission to feel and practice being kind to yourself. Being a long-term pain sufferer is a form of recurring grief being a continuous process of adjusting to a body and a life that have been fundamentally altered. The loss of your past self, independence and vitality. The sorrow over limited physical capabilities, being unable to work or join in activities, losing friends who do not understand your limitations. Everyday flares are a constant reminder of loss causing a vicious cycle of

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

• 95% of customers recommend friends & family

• Full end-to-end service with great customer support

• No hard sales!

EASY STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM

Children can enjoy getting stuck in to making this summery treat. Add your own toppings for extra fun!

Sponsored by

Ingredients:

1 x 400g punnet strawberries

1 x 250g tub mascarpone

½ x 397g can condensed milk cones and sprinkles, to serve

Method:

Pull the green hulls out of the strawberries. If they are still quite hard, cut them in half or quarters with a table knife. Tip them into a flat-bottomed dish. Use a potato masher to squash the strawberries as much as you can. Tip into a bowl. Add the mascarpone and mash this in – don’t worry if it is a bit lumpy. Add the condensed milk and mix everything together. Don’t worry if the mix is streaky. Spoon the mixture into a metal or plastic box and put it in the freezer. Wait until the next day or at least 6 hours before scooping into bowls or cones. Decorate how you like.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

It has been to date a very challenging season for cricket, some years a lot of play is lost to rain but not in 2026 when the extreme heat has allowed many more games to take place, but having additional drinks breaks and greater sale of ice creams have become common place.

The amount of cricket being played has made it difficult to irrigate the cricket squares, without water the cricket surface would be uneven and rock hard and unsafe to play. The outfield generally is dry and we are lucky it is fairly

even, never has the cricket ball propelled across the surface at such speed as this year.

Recently Suffolk Cricket held a seminar for young players helping them to develop their knowledge and encourage the young players to take up coaching.

Listening to the views of young people is always fascinating to those involved with running cricket clubs. High on the agenda is a ground where you can park (not so far to carry cricket equipment) having clean, well laid out changing rooms,

and for girls a good changing area, this is also the case for umpires.

At Bury St Edmunds the cricket club were part of a £1.8 million investment back in 2012 which has provided superb facilities but looking forward, better facilities for girls when playing in a mixed team is vital and for young players changing away from senior players is important.

A few days after the youngsters in the photograph who were from 5 different clubs, the ground hosted a match for Suffolk’s Over 70 team, cricket truly is a game for all ages.

5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF A BRITISH SUMMER

When the sun makes an appearance, it’s worth making the most of every minute. Here are five simple ways to enjoy the season without travelling far from home.

1. EAT OUTDOORS

Whether it’s breakfast in the garden, a picnic in the park or an evening barbecue, food always seems to taste better outside.

2. EXPLORE SOMEWHERE NEW

You don’t need to travel hundreds of miles to discover somewhere different. Visit a nearby village, nature reserve or walking trail you’ve never explored before.

3. MAKE THE MOST OF SEASONAL FOOD

British strawberries, raspberries, cherries and fresh salads are at their best during the summer months. Keep meals simple and let the fresh ingredients do the talking.

4. TAKE A BREAK FROM SCREENS

Swap an evening scrolling your phone for a walk, a good book in the garden or a catch-up with neighbours. Even half an hour outdoors can help you recharge.

5. SUPPORT LOCAL

Summer is a great time to visit local cafés, farm shops, garden centres and independent businesses. You’ll often discover hidden gems while supporting the people who keep our community thriving.

Summer always seems to pass by in a flash, so why not make the most of the longer days while they’re here. Whether it’s enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine, watching a spectacular sunset or simply spending time with family and friends, it’s often the little moments that become the memories we remember most.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Could you forgive your daughter’s killer?

I once read about Maria Jimenez, who was killed in March 2017. She had been in a car driven by Nick Tay, 25, who was speeding down a dual-carriageway near Guildford at 110mph. The pair had been out for supper with their church music group. Maria was about to turn 24.

Her mother, said that after the accident, despite being consumed by grief, her thoughts soon turned to Mr Tay. She knew that his family lived in Singapore and so she imagined that he must now feel very alone. Therefore, she invited him to live with them until his court hearing.

Elizabeth Jimenez recalled that when Nick arrived, he approached Maria’s father asking for his forgiveness. In tears they both collapsed to the ground. Fernando Jimenez hugged him and said “I do forgive you son”

When asked how he managed to do this, Mr Jimenez said: “If I’d held on to my feelings they would have destroyed me. Instead, I decided to love him and so he became like a son to me”.

In November 2017, Nick Tay, pleaded guilty to causing

death by dangerous driving and death by driving an uninsured vehicle. He was jailed for five years.

Reflecting on what had happened, Mr Jimenez said: “The true power of forgiveness is for the person who gives it, not just for the person who receives it. Nothing would bring Maria back. But forgiving Nick has helped to heal me.”

I don’t know about you, but I marvel at Maria’s father’s ability to forgive. I wonder if I could do the same..? But actually, that is what God would ask of me as a Christian.

On the cross Jesus responded to those who abused and crucified him by saying “Father forgive them for they do not know

what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). Christians are called to follow Jesus’ example as well as his teaching. And so, when someone hurts us, God expects us to forgive them just as he has forgiven us. I find this very hard to do.

But the good news is, that we can always ask God’s Spirit to help us to forgive people, even when it seems almost impossible to do so. We can also train ourselves to become more forgiving, by forgiving the small things that people say, or do, that hurt us. Why not begin your forgiveness training today?

Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him, and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him, sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.
