Welcome to the October issue

As I’m writing, the sun is shining and it doesn’t seem possible that later this month will be Halloween. Because you know what that means... Then it’s bonfire night and then fast forward to... I’m not going to say it.

Speaking of Halloween, we have found some lovely home decorations, see page 9. Or you could get the children to make some of their own Halloween art, see page 48 for Crafty Foxes pumpkin art.

Fancy a fun night out? There’s a karaoke Halloween party on at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on Saturday 28th October. Plenty of games and activities from 6pm till late. And advance notice, a family harvest barn dance is taking place at the Southgate Community Centre on Friday 10th November, see page 21 for ticket details.

It’s officially Autumn, so warm puddings are back on the menu. Our recipe for ‘Self-saucing Butterscotch Pudding’ on page 40 is a showstopper!

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events.

Take care & we’ll see you in November.

success story:

Michelle West

I love coming to Eventus, it’s about community and family.

Before coming to Eventus, I was not in a great place with how I was feeling about myself. I was in pain, I suffer from scoliosis which is curvature of the spine and I knew I needed to keep myself fit and healthy. My primary goals were to stop taking painkillers for my back, to be strong and to like what I saw in the mirror. Doing strength training I’ve exceeded those goals.

I’m fitter, healthier and I don’t have back pain anymore. I look in the mirror and see a confident, strong woman.

A monthly muse on all thing’s health & wellbeing with Carole Baker, Founder of the self centre Breathwork in the Modern Age

BREATHWORK the new healing modality?

“Err, I’ve been breathing just fine since the day I was born thanks” might be your first response to this statement. But there is compelling evidence now that being “Conscious” about your breathing and learning to control it, can have utterly amazing effects on the body and mind. There is so much power within your breath that lies untapped. Every culture and tribe on Earth has traditional ancient breathwork practices.

• Traditional Yogic breathing exercises (Pranayama) have been around for centuries, benefits include both energising you and calming you down - regulating the breath, can still the mind and achieve a deeper understanding of yourself.

• In ancient China, QiGong practitioners believed that the breath was closely connected to the body’s vital energy and that controlling the breath could help balance and harmonise the body’s energy.

• Ancient Egyptians developed a variety of breath control techniques to promote well-being. And techniques were used for spiritual/ physical health.

Early 20thC Rank & Reich believed breath was closely connected to emotional/ psychological well-being - the technique was used to help individuals release repressed emotions/traumas, believing repressed emotions were stored in the body and by releasing them through breathwork, one could improve emotional and psychological well-being.

1950s, Orr developed Rebirthing-Breathwork, which is a form of conscious connected breathing - a selfhealing technique that aims to release emotional and physical blockages, maybe from birth, through breath practices.

1960s Grof developed Holotropic Breathwork that uses rapid and deep breathing to achieve altered states of consciousness to access the healing potential of the unconscious mind - by accessing the unconscious mind, one could access repressed emotions, traumas, and negative behaviours that were blocking personal growth and well-being.

Come the 21st century Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman”, has brought breathwork practices more into the public, undergoing lots of scientific studies. He uses ancient Yoga breathwork techniques and positive mindset to enhance the ability to withstand extremely cold temperatures, boost immune system function and perform extreme athletic feats. Patrick McKeown has recently developed The Oxygen Advantage Breathwork Programme which focuses on using breath to enhance athletic performance, mimicking high altitude training.

So, breathwork is a diverse practice that encompasses many different techniques, they all share the common goal of using the breath to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

All of our Marvellous Autumn Masterclasses @theselfcentre will be incorporating breathwork practices, so whether you need energising or de-stressing or want to release emotions, we have the perfect one for you!

POSTCARD CLUB BURY ST EDMUNDS

The Bury St Edmunds Postcard Fair returned on Saturday 9th September 2023 to the County High School, Beetons Way, Bury St Edmunds after an absence of four years. The event was held in the sports hall and there were plenty of positive comments about the venue and the catering van which was positioned at one corner of the building.

Despite it being held on one of the hottest days of the year, a large queue quickly formed prior to opening. Once the doors opened, there was a steady flow of people all keen to find new additions to their collections (photo taken shortly after opening). Stallholders were able to reacquaint themselves with customers they had not seen since 2019.

Our club had its own stall selling donated postcards to raise money for club funds and it was pleasing to see so many club members attending this fair.

We can only hope it will return in 2024 and once again become a regular feature in collectors’ diaries.

For more information about the club/events please contact Sue Rawles on 01284 769480 or email burystedmundspostcardclub@gmail.com Or find us on facebook: Bury St Edmunds Postcard Club

Community Centre

Our exciting autumn programme

Well an indifferent summer has been and gone but the sun never sets on community activities planned at the Community Centre and this autumn is going to be full of family fun and opportunity.

We are delighted that our local Councillor and Trustee Richard Rout has kindly agreed to help fund some forthcoming events from his Suffolk County Council locality budget. This helps us to make our offerings to YOU affordable and inclusive. Thank you Richard.

So - coming up first will be the return of the hugely popular half term Spooky Fun Day on Thursday October 26th between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Entertainer and magician Charlie Cheesecake will once again be weaving his magical sparkle and enchanting his audience.

Tickets are just £2.00 per child and strictly limited to 100 children and MUST be booked in advance with Andy Abbott at

Restart a Heart

St John Ambulance will be running a FREE CPR training evening with practical training on a defibrillator like the one installed outside the Centre. This will help our community gain basic resuscitation skills, increasing the number of people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.

Tuesday 10 October at 630pm.

mail@abbott-photography. co.uk. They can be collected from the Centre office and paid for week commencing October 16th (except Wednesdays).

Next up - Following on from last year’s amazing event we are again hosting the Family Harvest Barn Dance with the Hoxne Hundred Ceilidh Band. Friday November 10th between 7.00pm and 10.00pm – see across for our poster with full details.

The topic of ‘Privacy’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series

How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well.

Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information for how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money.

Making some ‘me time’

Having privacy and time alone allows us to reflect, learn from experience and decide what is important to us. Enough privacy can also help us to get a better night’s sleep, as our brains are less likely to need to process the day at bedtime. Many people get their need for privacy met when they are travelling to and from work. It’s not always easy, however, when it comes to juggling busy lives, raising a family or when things are hectic at work. Whichever is the case, it is vital for us all to take time out to reset and feel happier.

Reading challenge

The National Literacy Trust is supporting World Mental Health Day at 10am on 10 October by calling on people to ‘Take 10 to Read’. Reading is great for helping you to relax and to escape into different worlds, whether it’s a book, magazine, newspaper, comic or anything else! There are plenty of ideas for schools, parents and families and communities and organisations at the Trust’s website: literacytrust.org.uk

Top tips to meet your need for privacy

l Think about how you can plan 10 to 20 minutes to yourself each day, free from interruptions, maybe in a park, or in a quiet room.

l Practise a relaxation exercise like 7/11 breathing, or just to let your mind wander and reflect on the next step to improve how you meet your needs.

l Go to bed at a regular time to give yourself a good night’s sleep, and then to get up a little earlier and have some time to yourself.

l Sit in the garden, go for a walk, or just enjoy a quiet morning coffee.

l Take time away from your desk at lunchbreaks, including a break from your phone – it can work wonders for your wellbeing

l For families in a busy household, you could also consider agreeing a place in the house where you know you can have some time alone. Alternatively, go for a walk for some fresh air and time to yourself.

Take 10 minutes for yourself

Did you know taking 10 minutes out of each day can have a positive impact on your life? Just 10 minutes a day of quiet time increases your brain power, helping you feel calm and think more clearly. This month we’re asking how you #Take10Suffolk by inviting you to share your tips and advice. Here are just two examples:

“I’ll take the dog for a walk to let my mind wander, or I’ll take a cup of tea into the garden for a few minutes to break up my working day between online meetings.”

- Ellie, Debenham

“I fit in a quick run during my lunch break, especially when I work from home. It gets me out of the house and really helps improve my energy and motivation for the rest of the day.”

- Chris, Beccles

Why not join the discussion at #Take10Suffolk by following Healthy Suffolk on Facebook or X (Twitter).

Graham Vale celebrates an impressive 50 YEARS of service

Glasswells home furnishings store has proudly presented Graham Vale, Deputy Carpet Manager of their Bury St Edmunds showroom, with an award for 50 years of loyal service.

Graham Vale started his Glasswells career as a furniture shifter, rearranging furniture around the Glasswells St Andrews Street store in 1973. In 1979 Graham helped open a new store in Sudbury, and has been selling carpet and flooring ever since. What Graham doesn’t know about carpets isn’t worth knowing - he is the go-to guy with all the answers. When the Carpet department moved to the huge Newmarket Road showroom in 1998, Graham was appointed Deputy Manager. This relocation enabled Glasswells to display more carpet and flooring choices than ever, offering over 10,000 options for customers, from soft luxurious carpets, to durable hard flooring from the likes of Karndean and Amtico.

Throughout the years, Graham has trained up all colleagues within the department, promoting his incredible leadership skills and sharing his wealth of experience. His kind and charming nature makes Graham a loveable character who overcomes challenges with very little fuss and ensures every job is done to the highest quality; he is a true role model to the new generation of Glasswells employees.

Using the innovative, computerised estimating system Masterpiece, Graham can have a floor plan mocked up in a matter of minutes providing the efficient service he always strives to achieve, with great flexibility. It’s his knowledge, expertise and customer interactions that makes his service one of the best at Glasswells.

Paul Glasswell, Managing Director, explains “Graham is an incredibly kind, reliable and hardworking man. His comprehensive knowledge is

an asset to Glasswells and our customers, as well as the department. He is always willing to accept a challenge and help everyone within the team overcome anything that the customers and their floors put in front of us. He has been invaluable to our success in becoming the largest carpet retailer in Suffolk”.

Graham will be celebrating his milestone at Glasswells with a gift of holiday vouchers.

Paul Glasswell concluded, “At Glasswells we pride ourselves on the knowledge, experience and exceptional customer service that our staff can offer our customers. That is what sets us apart from other retailers and makes our stores the very best home furnishings stores in East Anglia. Our long serving staff list is really rather extraordinary and it’s very satisfying for myself and the family that so many of our colleagues have enjoyed being at Glasswells for such a large part of their working life.”

LSS raising awareness of Lymphoedema & Lipodema

LSS was fortunate, thanks to the generosity of Allan Loveday, to be granted a free pitch at the very successful 2023 Thurlow Fayre. We had a very successful and also a fun day, giving out information and advice regarding Lymphoedema and Lipodema to all who visited our gazebo. The tombola raised a magnificent £111 which will go towards LSS’s 2023/24

fundraising aims. It was a long day and we were sustained with lovely cakes from the WI marquee, chips and cups of tea and coffee! Thanks to Peter, Sharon, Mollie, Graham and Gwen for their sterling work that day!

The day before LSS had an information point at the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service’s Soapbox ‘Garage’

at the, also very successful, My Wish Soapbox Challenge Day. Team Lymph came third fastest with their soapbox, all helping to raise awareness of lymphoedema and lipodema.

Connect with others living with Lymphoedema by joining LSN’s HealthUnlocked online community forum.

You Are Never Alone

Have you ever woken up in so much pain and felt so alone, that you think you cannot cope?

Your family and friends understand as much as they can, but you know that if they are not in pain, it is difficult for both them and you. It is possible that you don’t want to “burden” them with how much pain you are in, or how difficult it is for you to cope sometimes.

What if there was a group of people in the same situation as you? There is! In Bury St. Edmunds Chronic Pain Support Group, made up of people who are also in pain and go through the same feelings as you.

Everyone gets something different from the group, for some, it is the monthly meetings with a variety of speakers. It could be about managing your

pain one month, another month it could be about trying Yoga which is aimed at helping you. For those of us who are into Craft, there is a monthly Crafty session which is a lot of fun, they make beautiful greetings cards. My favourite is our monthly coffee mornings when we all meet up for a chat. There is something for everyone and you only need to go to take part in the things you want. Some people are only able to go for the coffee mornings, and that is fine.

During lockdown, we made crafts, we laughed a lot and we learnt a lot. Some ladies still continue to craft. When we ran out of challenges, we had Saturday coffee mornings on zoom, which some of us still enjoy now.

Positively Crafty Thursday 5th October from 1.30pm-4pm at Southgate.

Coffee Morning Monday 9th October from 10.30am at Dobbies.

You will never be asked questions; it is up to you to decide if you want to talk about your problems. We don’t sit around talking about being ill, we laugh a lot and have some fun. But, if you are having a bad time, then you are around the best people who will listen and understand.

New members are always welcome, be it male or female, we always enjoy meeting new people and it is always good to know that you have overcome the first step to get help. We know how difficult it is to reach out, we have all gone through it at some stage. I was terrified, but l was made to feel very welcome, just as welcome as you will be made to feel.

Why not join us for a coffee morning? The most you can lose is a morning out, you can always leave if you feel you need to, but somehow, l think you will stay.

Zoom Meetings Art on Wednesdays/Coffee on Saturdays. Both from 10am.

Gentle Chair Yoga Tuesday 11.30am-12.30am at Southgate Community Centre

the doors to the Butterfly Garden

We are thrilled to announce that September saw us open the doors to our end-of-life Butterfly Garden.

The space has been created thanks to donations to our Butterfly Garden Appeal and was built to ensure families get time together as they prepare to say goodbye to a loved one. It has been designed to feel like a home from home, to allow people to share time and memories and to enjoy the outside space, whatever the weather.

We have worked with some incredible people to make this happen with many of the contractors donating time or discounting their work. In fact, so many people have been involved in this project it’s impossible to thank them all personally.

However, special thanks must go to Den Humphries

from Out Of Our Tree. Den has created three amazing wooden butterfly sculptures, one of which ‘dances’ in the breeze.

Bury based home design store, Neptune, not only designed the interior for our garden room, but generously donated many pieces of the furniture. This has allowed us to create a

wonderful living room for people to enjoy.

Mike Wells, from AJ Joinery, built us wooden planters and Pat and Jim Dowling donated beautiful garden statues. We also worked closely with staff from the hospital to create this space and it has been fantastic to build these new relationships.

My WiSH Charity
Cutting the ribbon

Our brief, when the appeal was launched with the Bury Free Press, was to create a garden with a glass-fronted building which would allow patients and their loved ones to spend quality time together, away from the hustle and bustle of the wards, as they prepare to say goodbye. We aimed to provide an area for quiet contemplation, peaceful reflection and a space where children could play and pets could visit and memories to treasure could be made.

Feedback on our open day shows we achieved just this, and we are pleased to have now handed over the Butterfly Garden to the West Suffolk Hospital’s palliative care team who

will be able to invite families to come and spend precious time together.

Finally, we cannot finish this article without thanking our amazing donors, we continue to receive donations which will allow us to continue to support the palliative care team and their patients with the many initiatives we currently have in place as well as any new ones in the future. Thank you from all of us at My WiSH Charity and the families who you have made a difference too.

Although some members were on holiday our September meeting was well attended. Our speaker was Suze Bowers who entertained us with stories of her time as a tour guide. As a Spanish and French speaker Suze started work as a tour guide in London but eventually organised her own tours for groups wanting to see more of the British Isles. She was an

entertaining speaker who had clearly loved her job and had a lot of fun doing it.

We presented a cheque for £45.10 to Tanya Fifield from the My Wish Charity. This money had been raised at our July Meeting when members paid for their refreshments as part of the NHS Tea Party to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the NHS.

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome, and your first meeting is free! Contact Alison on 01284 701433 or Annette on 01284 769407.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

The end of our season

Hello and welcome to our October edition, the end of our season, with our doors closing on Sunday 8th.

Thank you for your continuing support, the committee and volunteers really appreciate your visits, especially when you join us for tea, coffee and cake.

I would like to extend a thank you to the committee for their hard work, hours of dedication, chat’s with visitors, guided tours and all the ‘behind the scenes’ activities that they do to keep your museum going. I’m sure you will join me in showing your appreciation for their sterling efforts and dedication. Thank you guy’s and gal’s not just for this year but also for the winter months projects and the 2024 season – which will begin on Easter Sunday the 31st April.

Aerobatic Display

A very successful recent ‘corporate’ event at the museum was the evening reception for a member. It was a great pleasure to host Chris Day and his beautiful bride Frances after their local church wedding. Chris also had a fantastic surprise for their guests - an Aerobatic Display (which was also greatly appreciated by the local community, especially the residents on Moreton Hall). I’m also informed that the people in town stopped and watched,

Angel Hill coming to a standstill. Frances said “there were amazing comments on social media in appreciation of the evening and the display”.

On the technical side, the display was performed by Mark Jeffries from Cambridge, who is the ninetimes British Aerobatic champion. He was flying the Extra 330SC aircraft in which he usually leads the ‘4 ship’ Global Stars Display team. Mark began with some ‘smoke-on’ manoeuvres before igniting the wing tip ‘firework

pods’. The ooo’s and ahh’s said it all! It was fantastic to see an aircraft flying over the airfield again, it’s sad that we have missed the activity in the past few months.

Thank you for all the videos and photo’s which were posted, they were great.

And finally, our last event for 2023 will be on Sunday December 10th (10.45 for 11.00) when we will host our annual Departures Service. All are very welcome with light refreshments served after the service. Please join us. I will also be reminding all in the next two editions here in the BSE Directory.

Thank you for your continuing support and we hope to see you again next month, November. Please don’t forget, just 2 Sunday’s remaining for Coffee and CAKE!

It’s shocking how quickly wildlife is disappearing and species biodiversity is decreasing in England, we are one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, sitting in the bottom 10% overall. But there is still hope. This month we will have a look at the bigger picture and things we can all do to help reverse the trend.

Our government as with so many others around the world have issued a pledge known as the ‘30 by 30’, this is a pledge to protect 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. This will help in 2 ways, there is the obvious increase in biodiversity, but just as importantly the restoration of wildlife areas such as bogs and wetlands will act as Carbon sinks and help reduce the speed of human made climate change.

of these areas have been managed for beauty, history or traditions rather than for wildlife but with the right development much of this space can be changed to become part of the 30% of the land and sea required for nature.

On such a small island with such a big population, it’s easy to imagine that a large proportion of England is covered in concrete. In fact it is only about 10%, and although that is high it still leaves 90% to play with for the future. Of-course much of the land is needed for food production but drilling down further into the numbers RSPB estimate that 35% of the land in England is under some form of nominal protection. Unfortunately, many

Currently only 6.5% of the overall land area of England is protected for wildlife and biodiversity through organisations such as RSPB, the Wildlife Trusts, Natural England, the Woodland Trust, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Farmers and thousands of small privately owned protected areas. With the right links and joint works between all concerned bodies in England there is still a chance we can meet the ‘30 by 30’ pledge, however I have a concern that recent trends towards governmental U- turns in environmental policies may scupper our chances. Here’s hoping!

Quick note – if you would like to come and see what we are doing at Larkwoodlakes.co.uk, West Stow, IP286EY to help wildlife and biodiversity, please contact me.

We charge a small fee of £10 for a walk and talk to help with the upkeep of the land and lakes.

Tony@larkwoodlakes.co.uk www.larkwoodlakes.co.uk M:07468 589316

On a large scale there needs to be engagement with landowners, communities, local industry, local authorities and water companies to find ways to improve farmland, moorlands, wetlands and former industrial sites to become part of our new land for nature directive. This is beyond the scope of most of us, but we can still help. Firstly, if you have the means, you may want to give money to help the organisations mentioned above to purchase and manage more land.

Secondly, join a local wildlife group to help as a volunteer, there are loads around Bury St Edmunds, here are just a few, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Woodland Ways, Bury Water Meadows Group, and the River Lark Catchment Partnership.

Finally, 5% of the land in England is covered in gardens, imagine if every one had a pond, a tree, a hedgehog highway, a selection of nest boxes, wildlife shelters and a variety of plants loved by insects, birds and other beasties. We could all have a miniature nature reserve at home which would help link all the big reserves together and act as wildlife highways. Please have a look at what you can do to help.

Christ Church

‘A change is as good as a rest’

It’s interesting how we all view change. Some of us look forward to different ways of doing things and some worry that the changes will cause too much disruption in their lives so they avoid it.

Sometimes change is inevitable. Maybe you moved house, job, or had to buy a new washing machine. All of which could have been triggered without you wanting things to change.

A lot of the time we don’t mind change if we can plan ahead. Like our vicar Jonathan he has known that it was time for him to retire, and I admire his decision because like a top athlete when you are at the peak of your career it is hard to move on from what may be a very satisfying place in your life.

Jonathan has built a wonderful community along with the physical building of Christ Church, the people (who are the biggest asset) have supported the development in the

community to reach as many people to feel welcome in God’s house.

I know when I first joined Christ Church I needed a welcoming space for myself and three children. The church felt so modern and interactive in its services it kept me wanting to go back even when my children didn’t want to conform to sitting still and being quite. (They have many ways of including children in the service; enjoying books, crafts and a creche every Sunday).

As I spent more time going to church, I realised the potential the space offered for exercise groups and Jonathan welcomed the chance to open the doors to new people.

His efforts to engage with other activities are a message to Moreton Hall and beyond ‘we are here for you’ Like the disciples for Jesus our aim is to show others that Faith brings out the good in people.

I do believe that faith has helped me make changes in my life. The wonderful thing about God is he doesn’t dictate, he gently reminds us of the choices we have in our life. I don’t know about you I have never been very good at being told what to do, so my relationship with God works extremely well. The subtle changes seem to make the most profound differences.

This may seem insignificant to you, but many years ago a friend from church said to me (when I was unsure about my belief in God) ‘whenever you want to say how lucky you are, say how blessed you are instead’. So I have and since then I have felt stronger in my belief and less questionable about my faith.

Jonathan may be leaving Christ Church but a ‘change is as good as rest’ He wholeheartedly deserves it!

Faith Healer

Tue 3 - Sat 7 Oct

A frayed banner hangs outside a desolate village hall. The sick, the suffering and the desperate arrive from out of the wind and the rain. They come in search of restoration, a cure. They are promised ‘a performance’, an opportunity to spend an intimate moment with a mercurial showman, who offers hope and salvation to the afflicted.

Using four enthralling monologues to interweave the stories of these three intriguing characters, Brian Friel takes us on an extraordinary journey of shifting perspectives and uncertain memories.

How to become an influencer

These days we hear a lot about influencers; people who have high profiles on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Influencers are perceived as being knowledgeable by their followers, who often imitate them or take their advice. Which is why some influencers can earn millions from advertisers for recommending their products. Kim Kardashian is arguably the most famous influencer. In 2022 she was paid $250,000 to recommend a crypto currency!

Andrew Tate is another notorious influencer. His TikTok videos have been watched 11.6 billion times. Which is concerning, because Tate is a self-confessed misogynist who believes that ‘women belong in the home, can’t drive properly and are a man’s property’. Predictably, most of his followers are young men, and so it’s worrying to imagine the

influence that Tate has had on this impressionable, emerging generation.

But let’s also remember that not all influencers are famous or infamous. Indeed, I believe that an ordinary person can be an influencer and a good one at that…

An American pastor met a visiting black South African Anglican bishop and he jokingly said: “I’m surprised Bishop, that you’re not a Baptist. In the US, most black people are Baptists”. “Well”, said the Bishop, “I grew up in South Africa, and if a black person met a white person walking along the pavement the black person was expected to step off the pavement into

the gutter to allow the white person to pass. But one day, when I was just a little boy, my mother and I were walking along the pavement when a tall white man in a dark suit was walking towards us, but before we could step into the gutter, the white man stepped off the pavement, and as he passed us, he tipped his hat to my mother as a mark of respect. Why did that white man do that? I asked my mother. He’s an Anglican priest she said. He’s a man of God. Over the years I thought a lot about that incident, said the bishop, and eventually I decided that I wanted to be an Anglican priest and a man of God”. The bishop’s name was Desmond Tutu.

Jesus said ‘In everything, do to others as you would have them do to you’. If you and I follow his teaching and the Anglican priest’s example, then perhaps we too will become influencers.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back and also welcome to the real autumn edition of the 19th hole, I don’t like saying the word WINTER as I know it signals the end of the golf season and for lots of us the end of regular trips out onto the course.

However, with WINTER comes a great opportunity to highlight, change and practice your golf game in preparation for the start of next years season.

Have you made a plan for the off season? If so, well done and I hope that you achieve the results you are after. If you haven’t it’s the perfect time.

COACHES CORNER – STRIKE!!

This is most important aspect of any golf shot you hit, and without better strikes, you will find it very hard to achieve your desired ball flight.

So to hit functional golf shots we need to be hitting the middle of the club more often than not,

WE ALWAYS NEED FEEDBACK!!

but also if we aren’t we need to know where we are hitting and why.

With this in mind this months Coaches Corner is highlighting the importance of strike and how within your practice you can track your strike to give to

If you would like any help during these winter months it would be great to help any of you with your games.

feedback on what happening when you swing the club.

This information will help to draw conclusions on what may need to improve within your swing or explain why you may not be getting the results that you are expecting on course.

Below are two great ways to receive feedback on your striking throughout your practice, neither of these will break the bank either.

Use a dry white board marker to make a large dot on the golf ball, then position the dot so you will strike it. This will then mark the club when it is struck and you will receive the feedback on your strike location.

Another way to see where you are striking the ball on the face is with dry shampoo… YES you heard me correctly! Spray the face of the club and then strike a shot, this will mark the club face again giving you more feedback on your strike location.

Now that you will be armed with better information about your strike patterns you can make either an informed decision on your technique, or take this information to your PGA professional and together look at ways to achieve better results going forwards.

If you are struggling with your strike or wanted some help this winter with your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.
