A monthly muse on all thing’s health & wellbeing with Carole Baker, Founder of the self centre

How can I boost my Immune System as Winter approaches? Did you know that practicing Yoga can have a profoundly positive affect on your Immune System? The Immune System is continuously under study as we have so much more to learn about what affects our ability to be in a state of “ease” rather than “Dis-ease” It is a complex network throughout the body that provides multiple lines of defence against illness. There are 2 main categories: innate immunity & adaptive immunity.

When functioning optimally, the immune system maintains a delicate balance. When a threat or injury arises, it triggers responses such as redness, inflammation (swelling), fatigue, fever, and/or pain. It’s important for the immune system to be strong enough to find and attack potential threats, but it must also be well-regulated so that the body is not always on alert or in attack mode. What we have discovered is that all the following are closely linked to the efficient functioning of our amazing Immune System and there are Yoga Poses that help regulate these systems. •

Respiratory system – the backbends of Yoga open the chest and facilitate better breathing through a focus

The Self Centre, Kempson Way, Suffolk Business Park, Bury St. Edmunds Suffolk IP32 7AR

on primary and secondary respiratory muscles and fascia and the importance of good abdominal support. Lymphatic system – the inversions and joint freeing elements of Yoga ensure that Lymph actually gets moved around the body so it can do its job of managing toxins, virus and bacteria. Sit around all day and you become stagnant! Digestive system – Twisting poses of Yoga improve Gut Functions. The Gut and the immune system support one another to promote a healthy body. If the gut is exposed to bacteria-stripping factors (poor diet, antibiotics, surgeries, toxins) this lowers your good intestinal flora, which can snowball into reduced immunity. When your gut is out of balance, meaning not enough good friendly bacteria vs. the pathogenic, your whole body is affected. Endocrine system – The immune system is highly receptive to endocrine signals due to hormone receptors on immune cells. So, when your adrenals secrete cortisol in response to stress, it is known to slow down your immune systems response. Many Yoga poses work to stimulate specific Endocrine glands (e.g. Shoulderstand – thyroid)

Tel: 01284 769090 www.the-self-centre.co.uk Follow us on

Sleep quality and quantity – Lack of sleep can throw off the immune system. Evidence indicates that in both the shortand long-term, sleep deprivation can make you sick. Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra has been shown to help improve sleep. Stress, anxiety and the mind – we know that Stress literally strangles the body and this also has a detrimental effect on how your immune system functions. Yoga is well documented to have stress reducing effects. The exposome (internal and external environment) – Pollution, toxins from chemicals in water, products and food also all affect how your immune system functions. As you learn more about how your own body functions through practicing Yoga, Mindfulness and Breathwork you will become more aware of what you eat, drink, put on your skin etc. Books • The Biology of Belief – Dr Bruce Lipton • Ultra Processed People – Chris Van Tulleken What Doctors Don’t tell you – Website and magazine www.wddty.com

SOUTHGATE

Community Centre

Supporting the local community Our montage this month shows how the Southgate Community Partnership supports the local community. We hosted a free Restart A Heart CPR training evening kindly conducted by St John Ambulance trainers and cadets. We have a defibrillator installed outside our Centre and the evening featured practical training on how to use the equipment as well as basic resuscitation skills.

One of our charities of choice we will always support whenever possible is the West Suffolk Hospital MyWish charity led by an amazingly dedicated team. Passionate fund-raisers are Sue and Trevor Giles with Nicola Bevan and her daughters Lacey and Jessica who held a second coffee morning at the Centre, they are supporting MyWiSH by holding mornings for a month and have already raised some £18,000, so we salute you!.

We have our annual open meeting with the local community on TUESDAY 7 NOVEMBER @7 IN THE MAIN HALL. Come along and find out what we have been doing in the past year and our plans for the future. We would welcome your suggestions and ideas as to how we could serve you better. And you might like to get involved yourself!

Coming Up…

The topic of ‘Security’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing? That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well. Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information on how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money. Jon Neal, Chief Executive, Suffolk Mind

Your need for security - top tips When we feel safe, we think clearly and respond to what is going on around us while coping with change. When we feel unsafe, perhaps about finances or relationships, it can create stress associated with uncertainty and even powerlessness. Too much stress makes it difficult to think clearly and has a negative impact on our emotional wellbeing. Here are some tips to help: l Think about what makes you feel secure and make a special effort to do this more - this could be finding a cosy space to relax, listening to music or talking to someone who helps you to feel safe. l Reduce feelings of stress by practising a technique sometimes called 7/11 breathing. Look this up at Suffolk Mind’s website. l Talk to someone. A problem shared is a problem halved. Whether you are worried about finance, relationships or anything else, help is available. Start by talking to a trusted ‘other’ (friend or family member). l Seek help – don’t suffer in silence. Confidential, free support is available. Suffolk InfoLink is a great starting point to find out what is available.

Financial security It can be difficult to meet the need for security when we are affected by issues that can seem beyond our control, such as the cost of living, affecting everything from food and fuel to energy costs. Help is available: l It’s important to check whether you could be eligible for financial support. Try the Suffolk InfoLink benefits calculator or speak to Citizens Advice confidentially for free. l Credit unions are a great, trusted option to help with affordable loans. l The Household Support Fund includes government funding to help with the cost of living. The Local Welfare Assistance Scheme helps people experiencing financial hardship. l Warm Homes Suffolk provides targeted help to make it cheaper for people to heat their homes.

Where can I find out more? If you think you might be experiencing domestic abuse, or are concerned for a family member, friend or colleague, help is available 24 hours, 7 days a week through the

Suffolk Domestic Abuse Helpline and live chat Call 0800 977 5690 or visit suffolkdahelpline.org.uk

Relationship security This year’s White Ribbon Day (25 November) calls on people and organisations to #ChangeTheStory by challenging the seemingly ‘harmless’ attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate violence for women and girls. The campaign strives to make a positive change by ending men’s violence against women and girls, and Suffolk partners are supporting the campaign between 25 November and 11 December by calling on people to speak up on the subject. A key focus this year is highlighting financial abuse in relationships, which can be when someone maintains coercive control over the household finances. Find out more at whiteribbon.org.uk

Need more from your existing solar installation? If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours. A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it. If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage. Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

5star Trusted Trader serving Essex & Suffolk solar customers

Is a solar battery right for you? Get in touch for a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our team. We’re here to help solar work hard for you.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman It was so lovely to welcome everyone into school for our Harvest Festival Celebrations, and listen to children singing and reading their stories. They did a fantastic job, speaking clearly and and smiling the entire time and thanks to all for the donations to the Bury Food Bank which will be very well received by families across the town. A massive Hardwick thank you to Alison, her friends and puppets from Southgate Church for making the occasion really special, she spent a lot of time in school working with the children and is a big part of our Hardwick family. It was also good to welcome parents and carers into school over three days for the hugely successful Art Solutions project, the resulting art work relating to the English countryside has made a fabulous display in the main entrance corridor. We hope those that were able to attend enjoyed working with your children art expert Liz and her team were full of praise for the school and pupils and said they have never had so many parents taking part...

Art Solutions – September 2023 Well done mums, dads and carers!, our montage shows all the hard work that went on! Finally a big thank you for the volunteer Friends of Hardwick Primary School for all their hard

You are valued… You have to try to keep the positivity in yourself. A positive mindset can boost your mood and improve your mental health. A thankful outlook helps us to focus on the positives in life, even when things aren’t going well. This is hugely beneficial to our mental health and wellbeing. The role of gratitude in relation to our mental health is important because if we are grateful for what we’ve got, rather than feeling disappointed because we don’t have everything we like.

Being thankful boosts contentment and happiness. Even the intensity of physical pain is reduced by counting our blessings instead of our burdens. As the positive frame of mind associated with gratefulness reduces stress and anxiety. It can also lead to better sleep. Gratitude improves our resilience because it gives us a broad perspective, when things don’t go the way we had hoped. Pause to notice each positive experience as it happens. When life delivers a series of disappointments, we struggle

to feel thankful. Let your emotions out, we can’t be happy all the time. Acknowledge any support you have through this difficult time and be sure to ask for help if you need it. Be grateful for negative outcomes as well as the positives you enjoyed. Consider good things as a gift to be treasured and enjoyed. If it’s difficult, don’t beat yourself up. It’s human nature to focus on obstacles in life because of the challenges of overcoming them. Practising gratitude helps us to think more positively and overcome those challenges. Enjoy all the little things.

a busy autumn term A busy autumn term is underway in Girlguiding. Here are just a few examples of recent activities. In Elmswell the Rainbows went on the train to enjoy Needham Lakes. 1st Moreton Hall Brownies are working on the Anglia Social Action challenge. While learning about food they had great fun comparing foods whilst blindfolded and tried tasting some new fruits. They

weren’t sure about lychees! Then they welcomed Amanda from Gatehouse to a Brownie meeting. She explained how food banks work and thanked them for the donations of food and money they had collected. Earlier this term they visited Nowton Park and did some litter picking, leaving plenty of time for outdoor games, of course.

2nd Bury Brownies have had a session with Crafty Foxes and produced some lovely lanterns. They are looking forward to a visit from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Christmas preparation coming up!

If you think you could spare some time to volunteer with Girlguiding please visit girlguiding.org.uk or contact nwdivision_girlguidingsuffolk@btinternet.com for more information.

Moreton Hall WI Our speaker at our October meeting was Chris Burford who is a retired chef. He trained at the Savoy and told us a little about his career before demonstrating some fruit and vegetable carving. Although there was the opportunity to have a go at carving, most members declined so the bandages and plasters were not required!

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 1 November with Amanda Sutherland who will talk about Trends of a Decade and bring along some of her clothing and jewellery items. It is to be an Open Meeting, so friends and family are very welcome to join us. Tickets £5 on the door for visitors.

This November, I thought I could show you how to make your own personalised wax crayons. YOU WILL NEED: Old crayons and a silicone letter mould and an oven. This is a great way to recycle old half used crayons, also a great way to keep the kids busy on a cold autumnal night as they can help you sort them into colours.

Arrange the crayons into piles of colours

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum The time has come… Shorter days, longer nights. The time to plan for next year is here! Firstly, a short reflection on last year. Our visitor numbers are up from last year (and previous years) with donations also very positive. I will give final figures next month. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY who has visited or volunteered this season.

history / events / community Secondly, I divide the museum into three – The History with Exhibit’s, The Events and The Community. The History of the airfield, personnel, the aircraft and the sorties. We are always looking for more information and items of interest. Visit by relative’s, historian’s, local residents can all provide new material to enhance the museum. Have you anything tucked away in a cupboard or loft which is relevant to us? The Events and Community I’m going to combine as this is an invitation to you all. The groups who have

supported the museum this year have been exceptional – a very big thank you. Echoes of the Past, special days e.g. the Suffolk MVT and the Royal British Legion Riders Branch (Cambs), the Tea Dance, the aircraft fly past’s (including the Pyro display for a certain wedding reception), these are all part of the season. Days like this are very special to us, watch for more next year. The invitation to all is the Annual Departures service on Sunday the 10th of December. Please be with us at 10.45 for our short memorial service at 11.00. This will be followed by a ‘chat with nibbles’ in the tea room to catch up with friend’s, volunteer’s and visitors. I will also mention this invitation next month, December.

Please also remember the National Remembrance weekend in November, 11th and 12th. Although the museum will be closed members will be joining the township on Angel Hill and the Abbey Gardens to pay their respects to those who sacrificed so much for us.

See you again next month in December, here in The Directory. I also believe we have a very important PS. – Thank you, BSE Directory (Amplify), for providing us with this great info platform. Every month you print our report, which is a direct link to so many of our visitors. Thank you for this great service, helping us in such a big way, we are extremely grateful.

BURY ST EDMUNDS

Cricket Club These are exciting times at Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club as work commenced in October for a new 3 lane outdoor net facility which meets the highest ECB specifications. The project has been more than two years in the preparation, the fundraising commenced with the match in July 2021 against a team of England Legends that featured Mark Ramprakash, Devon Malcom, Matthew Hoggard, Monty Panesar and Alex Tudor. The game in front of around 800 spectators launched the appeal the fund raising was off to a good start. We are grateful to Bury Town Council for their terrific donation. The Suffolk

The old nets

Foundation’s Sports and Miller Fund have provided a good sum and more recently Councillor Richard Rout has also made a significant donation from his locality fund. We are also grateful to the England and Wales Cricket Board for committing funding toward the work. More than 40 corporate and individual donations have taken the appeal close to the target of £70,000. We will continue the fund raising from now until the new cricket season. Removal of the old net structure took place in August with volunteers from the cricket club removing the old frame and nets. Mark Finch of Finch (Elmswell) who is one of our sponsors removed the shed and set about clearing the compound, this was followed by another key sponsor Steve Lumley who NOVEMBER 2023 | 51

provided an excavator to not only clear the area but remove surplus sub soil and material. On Monday October 2nd Exclusive Leisure commenced work on the foundations of the new facility, the company had been contracted by the England and Wales Cricket Board to provide significant additional facilities for the Hundred Competition which had delayed the start of this part of the work but in many ways with no cricket taking place and good weather circumstances were ideal. The new 3 lane outdoor nets will be of the highest standard totally enclosed for safety and with the most up to date surface the club have after consultation with senior players selected the highest quality available. The new facility will greatly enhance practice and coaching of young players.

NOVEMBERS LOOK AT HELPING OUR WATER SYSTEM

There’s a lot of chat about the disgusting pollution and exploitation of our rivers, streams, lakes and inshore coastal waters so I thought it would be a good idea to see what we can do to help. a crazy fact, in 1830 the average water consumption per person was 18 litres a 1. Here’s day, in 2023 it is more like 150 litres. We can all help reduce our daily consumption and

reduce the pressure on reservoirs and rivers with a couple of simple changes to daily routine a) reduce shower time, this can save 50 litres a day, b) don’t always flush the toilet, this could save 30 litres a day. There you go more than 50% saved. Easy. jet washers and hoses, 2. Avoid one of these can use 1,000

litres of water an hour. I appreciate they are simple but a bucket, a broom and a bit of elbow grease will have the same effect and you have a workout at the same time. please don’t flush 3. Please, things like wet wipes, sanitary

products or an other unsavoury things down the loo. Where do you think they go? Some will be intercepted at water treatment centres (sewage works to the older members of our readership) but many will end up in rivers and streams. Not nice for people like me who spend a lot of time clearing our waterways.

you are cleaning the 5. Whenever bath, the sink or the toilet think

about the constituents of the cleaning material. If there is a big X on the side, the chances are there is a nasty chemical in there which will kill wildlife and plants. Remember anything that says it will kill 99% of all known germs will have the same effect when it enters a river or stream. Our wildlife is already under extreme pressure, we can all help give it a better chance by thinking about what we are flushing down our sinks and toilets. you are out and about, please 6. Iftake your rubbish home. Left to

Sex Is Like Praying

Yes, I know I have caught your attention, who would expect a title like this not to intrigue your curiosity? I recently took a friend out who was recovering from an operation on her foot and explained I was hoping to draw more people’s attention to what goes on in Church. Very quickly she gave me this title and a couple of others and explained her insight behind them and made me reflect on why I wanted to help the community understand what Christ Church does like so many other Churches do across the world. But it seems to be shrouded in mystery. I remember when I first trained as a fitness instructor (1990) and realised so many

people didn’t come to a gym because they thought it was for ‘fit people’. I think it must be the same for people wondering if Church is for them, do they feel they should already know all the stories in the Bible? I can assure you I am still learning about all the stories in the Bible and love the fact that our speakers bring these stories to life in a way that we can relate to today. As we approach the end of Autumn we hang on to the positives of beautiful colours from our trees and the natural world we live in. We may enjoy the shorter hours of daylight to be indoors more, or use the opportunities to get out to clubs and events locally to stay in the hearts of our 54 | NOVEMBER 2023

Written by Samantha Reid A member of Christ Church communities. But every Sunday without fail Christ Church is open for services at 10.30am. Yes, for some it is the familiar faces they want to catch up with after the service, or the understanding of what we can do to help others as well as learn about those stories in the Bible. But the biggest thing I have learnt is having an open mind. Church means different things to different people and that’s ok. So, coming back to my title ‘Sex is like Praying’ you may still be puzzled? Well even us churchgoers ask… 1. How often should we do it? 2. When should we do it? 3. Where should we do it? Yes you’ve guessed it there isn’t one correct answer, everybody is different, but if you must know, my answers are… 1. I try every day 2. When I’m relaxed and not distracted 3. Where I am comfortable. And yes, I am talking about PRAYING!

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

A Remembrance Marathon in Flanders Fields For more years than I care to remember, I have wanted to run a marathon, but never quite got myself organised enough to put in an entry. And then, last year, it dawned on me that at 54, this was one challenge that was only going to get harder the longer I left it. So I decided to get serious about this marathon running business and find a suitable race to take on my challenge. I scoured the internet and found In Flanders Fields - a marathon run for remembrance. The race is to honour the fallen and all others who were deployed to this front line during the First World War. The theme of remembrance is very important to me. My great grandfather was killed in the First World War and my two sons served in the Royal

Alison Burgess Family and Community Worker, Southgate Church

Anglian Regiment. They both returned from operational tours of Afghanistan having lost close friends, so a marathon to remember the sacrifices of so many, felt right.

from 6km. This was a great opportunity for my fiancé, Tim, to support me along the way. Having been seriously ill in hospital at the beginning of the year, this was a great feat for him too. The end of the race was in Ypres and to enter we had to pass through the Menin Gates, inscribed with over 54,000 names of soldiers who marched through the gates and never returned - their bodies never recovered. This made reaching the finish line incredibly humbling.

The marathon started in Diksmude, Belgium and wound its way on a flat course of wide cycle trail along the River Yser. Locals from the small farming communities along the route were out in support. One feature of the race was that it gave the opportunity to have a bicycle companion

The support of our family and friends has been incredible and we have raised over £1500 in sponsorship which will be shared between Combat2Coffee and Troop Aid, two amazing organisations who give valuable support to soldiers and veterans.

10.30am Morning Worship Service with Sunday Club groups for young people of all ages. Service on Sunday 12th November includes The Act of Remembrance

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Friendship Club for older people

At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. In the Bible, Matthew 5:9, Jesus says: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” We pray for those currently in conflict zones and for the leaders who have the power to bring about peace. We think particularly of the people of Israel and Gaza, together with Ukraine. We remember that every life is precious in the eyes of God, and we yearn for a world where “nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” (Isaiah 2:4). On this Remembrance Sunday, let us honour the far too numerous sacrifices made by so many people. But pray fervently for a peaceful future.

THE 19TH HOLE BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH CULFORD SCHOOL Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching Welcome back to the 19th Hole, we can safely say colder weather is here, some of you might even have decided to start playing less golf in the months to come. The colder weather is no reason to stop playing or stop working on your game. The winter months are a great time to target areas of your game that need some work before the next golf season starts. Firstly, identify strong and weak areas within your game. This should cover

every aspect of play including on course strategy and mind-set. Once you have identified some areas that need improvement you can structure your practice and play to further assist your improvement throughout the winter months.

TOP TIP: Find some winter clothing that you are happy to swing in and will keep you warm and dry as well. Layers are always better than thicker bulky items, and don’t forget to keep your hands warm!

COACHES CORNER – BEAT THE WIND THIS WINTER So as the winter months begin to test us all on course, it’s essential that we all stay in control of our golf ball in less than perfect conditions. One great way to stay in control of your ball flight in often cold and blustery conditions is to flight your golf ball lower, to play this shot well will require some changes to your normal technique. Listed here are the adjustments to allow you to play this shot, with some practice this type of shot will become one shot you can go to, to stay in control when everyone else is struggling in the coming months. Depending on the distance of the shot and strength and direction of the wind, you will need to choose more or sometimes less

club to achieve the distance you require from this controlled swing. LOWER FLIGHTED GOLF SHOT Below are a list of the changes you can make to hit these controlled lower flighted shot. SET UP Grip location, gripping slightly down the grip to add control to this shot. Ball position, centred position this will allow you to achieve a downward strike easier. SWING Add more control to the backswing, shorten it slightly for control. I use a three-quarter backswing for this shot. Concentrate on achieving a good strike through impact not speed, remember this shot is all about control. Lastly, a full follow through isn’t needed for this controlled swing, the swing can be ended at the same height as your backswing. This will help with of both the

speed of the swing and the control the height of the ball flight by reducing the amount of spin on the ball. I hope this shot will help you control your ball flight in the coming months, it’s a shot that will require some practice but when mastered will become a useful shot in many situations.

If you are struggling if any aspect of your game then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more. 62 | NOVEMBER 2023
