Welcome to the March issue

It’s March! And as the days are starting to get longer, it feels like we’re all getting a bit more of a spring in our step!

It’s exciting times for Bury St Edmunds this month with Primark opening on 6th March, and now open, the new Everyman Cinema, where you can enjoy the ultimate cinematic experience in style, it really does look stunning! Find out more about it on page 8.

Although it feels a little early this year, March also plays host to Easter! There’s lots of Easter events listed throughout the magazine, from a Children’s Easter afternoon at the Moreton Hall Community Centre, Chocolate Bingo at the Southgate Community Centre through to the Walk of Witness on Good Friday, something for everyone!

We have a delicious recipe for hot cross buns on page 40, and Michelle at Crafty Foxes has an Easter bunny inspired craft for the kids to try on page 48.

And don’t forget... The clocks “spring forward” at the end of March to mark the beginning of British Summer Time (yay!), which unfortunately means we’ll lose one hour of sleep (boo!).

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in April!

Why you should choose what you listen to…

“Sound is to the nervous system, what food is to our physical bodies” Tomatis

We all understand that food provides nourishment at the cellular level of our body, but did you know that sound feeds us the electrical impulses that charge the neocortex of our brain?

To be honest, if you really stopped and thought about it, you would completely understand that because you know putting “Bat out of hell” on full volume and dancing around the kitchen singing your heart out has a very different effect on you emotionally to listening to a Mozart piano concerto or a soppy love song!

We all have the same equipment (2 ears) – the conscious use of sound comes down to understanding how sound affects us. Start by being aware of what you listen to, notice that sometimes even the sound of one particular person’s voice can “grate” on you whilst another can “soothe” you.

Sound can be used as a tool to de-stress, improve mental productivity, accelerate learning, minimize pain and facilitate healing – WOW, read that again!

So perhaps it’s time to learn how to govern our “sonic environments” or create new and better ones?

Many ancient cultures knew about the power of sound long before “Science”. The Yogis new that everything in the world vibrates and we are affected by this. The whole planet vibrates to the rhythms and sounds of music, primitive or advanced, it is an inescapable part of life, spiritual ceremonies, social celebrations, armies marching, funerals and feasts. All matter consists of particles, and it is now accepted in Quantum Physics that motion creates frequency and frequency creates sound.

We suffer from stress and its states of ‘Dis-ease” more than ever in our modern sound filled world; an “overamping” of the nervous system and too much loud “bad” noise can be a factor.

The emerging field of “Sound Healing” is based on the theory of vibration: how frequency resonates and affects our nervous system and creates a charge in the brain.

One final fascinating fact about how sound affects you is down to the amazing link your ears have with the Vagus Nerve (the 10th cranial nerve) The enormous task of the Vagus Nerve is the functional regulation of our parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest/rejuvenate) and of a

host of organs from the larynx, heart, lungs, stomach, liver, bladder, kidneys, small intestine to the colon. It is also attached to the inner and outer ear drum! So, this means that the effect that sound has on us can no longer simply be measured by how our ears feel and how it sends signals to our brain – the sound we choose to listen to is resonating and vibrating our whole body!

If you are interested in discovering more about the Vagus Nerve and its importance in keeping us healthy, relaxed and happy then look into the Polyvagal theory by Stephen Porges www.stephenporges.com

If you are interested in discovering more about how Sound can heal and how it is being used in the NHS and Schools then look at www. collegeofsoundhealing.co.uk/ articles.php

Sometimes it’s the little things

Donations to My WiSH Charity come in all shapes and sizes. While big donations are amazing and help us to provide huge projects such as the cardiac diagnostic unit and the end-of-life Butterfly Garden, smaller donations make a big impact too. Here are just a few of our recent purchases which will help to enhance care and support staff too.

We provided five breast feeding cushions for the neonatal unit and maternity transitional bay. These will be a great addition to help support new mums as they learn to feed their baby.

More cushions but this time heart shaped! These are made by the Breast Care Cushion Group which we are proud to support by supplying the materials needed to make these special cushions which are given to women post breast surgery. The shape is just perfect to provide support as they heal.

Toys, toys and more toys! We love toys because they are not only fantastic for playing but also to help distract and provide a calm environment.

Toys mean the child has fun while the physio and occupational therapists are treating through play. We have recently donated this large bundle to the Stowmarket child development centre to aid the speech and language sessions. And they’re not just for children. We work closely with our adult learning disability nurse to ensure she has a variety of items to help her patients too.

Find out more about My WiSH Charity at www.mywishcharity.co.uk Or call the team on 01284 712952.
Maija Blagg, matron and Alison Bunting, neonatal nursery nurse with breast feeding cushions

Mindful colouring is a great way to while away time in hospital and a fantastic way to calm and distract patients. These beautiful books are now with ward F14 which is the specialist women’s ward.

DVD players are a great resource that we provide across the West Suffolk and the Newmarket Community Hospital. All patients have access to WiFI Sparks which enables them to access TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines, but for those who don’t own a smart device, we loan out DVD players and have an extensive range of DVD’s to keep patients occupied.

CD players are now on each ward along with activity boxes to help patients who have dementia. These all help to provide a nice calm environment as well as stimulate the patients helping to prevent cognitive decline.

A hundred squeezy balls are now with the lymphoedema team. By squeezing these along certain points of the body, they aid the draining of the lymphatic system which is vital in the patient’s treatment.

A CPR monitor was donated to the emergency department. This fantastic tool helps staff learn to administer chest compressions as well as being a great refresher for experienced staff. The device measures both the compression down as well as the release and the speed ensuring staff learn the perfect rhythm needed.

This month we feature the special day when UKS2 children spent a fascinating day at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford.

From the early days of flight, through to the dramatic days of the Second World War and the technological advances of the Cold War, IWM Duxford played a central role in some of the most significant periods of 20th century history.

Inside every hangar and exhibition, the children discovered iconic aircraft, viewed historic objects from the many collections and uncovered hundreds of personal stories of the many lives impacted by conflict.

And they were so lucky to see a Spitfire take to the skies from the airfield where they first flew, get up close to gigantic aircraft and walk in the footsteps of the men and women who served here.

What’s been happening at…

HARDWICK Primary School

Highlights of Europe’s largest air museum were the American War Museum and the amazing Blackbird spy plane, the Battle of Britain hanger, going on board Concorde... and the message of the day... Don’t forget to look up!!

Compeigne Way Update

Suffolk County Council will be carrying out a Section 19 investigation in this area, which is an independent review following a flood event of these severity. This will provide context as to the flow of water, the wider issues at Compiegne Way and recommendations on how flood risk could be managed going forward. Once this is completed, we will have a better idea on a longer-term plan for managing flood risk here.

In relation to the work carried out by our streetlighting team, there was one lit sign repaired and one column replaced. The column was the A143 junction at the roundabout where the dual carriageway then starts that leads to the Tesco roundabout.

Lining hasn’t yet been completed due to the flow of water, however I have asked for an update on when this is likely to take place.

THREE MINUTE MOVEMENT MOTIVATOR!

Movement plays an important part of lymphoedema management. It keeps the lymph fluid moving, improves your general health, helps with weight management and also stimulates the endorphins. But the thought of exercise can be daunting if you are struggling to get around, being a gym bunny is not for everyone and with our busy lives, we can forget to devote time for regular exercise. So, instead of giving up and making friends with that bar of chocolate, what can we do? Try choosing a task that takes roughly three

minutes and that you do at least once a daysuch as boiling the kettle for a cuppa, talking on the phone or watching/ignoring the TV adverts in between programmes - and use this time to move about (which is basically what exercise is!). You could twirl your ankles both ways, do a march on the spot, maybe do a little dance, shrug your shoulders up to your ears, pick up a can of beans and do some arm curls. Three minutes, a couple of times a day to start with, can help make a difference - so why not give it a go!

Positively Crafty

In the February session a card was made using a stamp that can be wet embossed.

Embossing powders are available in many colours to create different effects. Yesheat is an essential part of the process! It activates the embossing powder effects, whether that be to shine, mattify or gloss.

Be careful when using a heat gun that you hold it a distance away.

Once the card is embossed and the heat has been applied it becomes dry enough for colour to be added within your chosen design. As you can see you can adapt the design for different occasions.

Crafting is a chance to do something together, nurture your inner creativity and quieten your mind.

Speaker Cancellations

Members attend meetings with expectations and often for a specific speaker. It is therefore disappointing to them and difficult for the group when a speaker cancels at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. These occasions are rare but when this happens the group improvises and members are given the opportunity to share some of their own interests. Aromatherapy and Genealogy are just two such topics that have been shared.

DIARY DATES

Positively Crafty Thursday 7th March from 1.30pm-4pm (Embossing folders) at Southgate Community Centre.

Coffee Morning Monday 11th March at the Folk Café from 10.30am-12.30pm. Open to all members, lapsed ones, friends, partners and carers.

Before Visiting

Before you consider joining the support group give some thought as to what you want out of it, what support means to you and what would you expect from one.

Think about your needs and how you fulfill them. Everyone’s needs are different as are their expectations.

Many people turn up and find it is not what they expected. Be honest with yourself as to what you expect before you come.

3 TIER TV TABLE

Hot cross buns

Ingredients:

For the buns

300ml full-fat milk, plus 2 tbsp more 50g butter

500g strong bread flour

1 tsp salt

75g caster sugar

1 tbsp sunflower oil

7g sachet fast-action or easy-blend yeast

1 egg, beaten

75g sultanas

50g mixed peel

zest 1 orange

1 apple, peeled, cored and finely chopped

1 tsp ground cinnamon

For the cross

75g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

For the glaze

3 tbsp apricot jam

Method

Sponsored by

Bring 300ml full-fat milk to the boil, then remove from the heat and add 50g butter. Leave to cool until it reaches hand temperature. Put 500g strong bread flour, 1 tsp salt, 75g caster sugar and 7g sachet fast-action or easy-blend yeast into a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Pour in the warm milk and butter mixture, then add 1 beaten egg. Using a wooden spoon, mix well, then bring everything together with your hands until you have a sticky dough.

Tip on to a lightly floured surface and knead by holding the dough with one hand and stretching it with the heal of the other hand, then folding it back on itself. Repeat for 5 mins until smooth and elastic. Put the dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with oiled cling film and leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hr or until doubled in size and a finger pressed into it leaves a dent.

With the dough still in the bowl, tip in 75g sultanas, 50g mixed peel, zest of 1 orange, 1 finely chopped apple and 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Knead into the dough, making sure everything is well distributed. Leave to rise for 1 hr more, or until doubled in size,

again covered by some well-oiled cling film to stop the dough getting a crust.

Divide the dough into 15 even pieces (about 75g per piece). Roll each piece into a smooth ball on a lightly floured work surface. Arrange the buns on one or two baking trays lined with parchment, leaving enough space for the dough to expand. Cover (but don’t wrap) with more oiled cling film, or a clean tea towel, then set aside to prove for 1 hr more.

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Mix 75g plain flour with about 5 tbsp water to make the paste for the cross – add the water 1 tbsp at a time, so you add just enough for a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag with a small nozzle. Pipe a line along each row of buns, then repeat in the other direction to create crosses. Bake for 20 mins on the middle shelf of the oven, until golden brown.

Gently heat 3 tbsp apricot jam to melt, then sieve to get rid of any chunks. While the jam is still warm, brush over the top of the warm buns and leave to cool.

– THE EAGLES HAVE LANDED –

The annual RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch runs every year at the end of January. Observe the wild birds in your garden for an hour, noting the different species that appear and then send the findings to the RSPB (the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

This survey assists in building a picture of the health of the British bird population. However good most surveys were this year, I bet they weren’t as good as the ones coming from around here this year. Imagine entering a White-tailed eagle in your survey results! The birders were out in force with their long lenses and their scopes as word spread that this unusual visitor had been sighted, again, as it’s not the first time they have ventured into East Anglia. One was spotted a few years ago on Mickle Mere at Ixworth, so it isn’t unheard of. Ruffling more feathers, a pair was spotted again near Bury St Edmunds this week. The exact location is usually kept a secret in case of trouble, but some will have been lucky enough to see them.

White-tailed eagles are Britain’s largest birds of prey with a wingspan of up to 2.5m and were once widespread across England. Human persecution led to their extinction around 1780. Scotland still supported these magnificent birds but the last one was shot on Shetland in 1918. Then a reintroduction programme was started by the

Roy Dennis Foundation in 2019 with birds from Europe released in Southern England. The pair seen near Bury this week are descendants of European reintroduced birds and we know this as they have identification rings on their feet. So it’s known that both of them are young birds (juveniles), one is a Dutch bird which was injured in a turbine and blown off course and the other is from the reintroduction programme in Sussex. They will travel vast distances cross-country in search of food, usually fish, especially in their early years, though they are mainly found around rocky coastlines. Suffolk Wildlife Trust suggests that the sight of white-tailed eagles further inland in Suffolk demonstrates how they are adapting in the face of habitat loss and climate change.

Dwarfed by white-tailed eagles (see picture for comparison), buzzards, in contrast are a familiar sight over our meadows now, but it wasn’t always so. Persecution in the 19th Century resulted in them being

www.burywatermeadowsgroup.org.uk

confined to the west of England and the rise of the use organochlorine pesticides reduced the birds’ ability to reproduce. Myxomatosis spread to the UK, killing most of the rabbit population which is a staple of the buzzard’s diet. But when the chemical was banned in the late 1960s, coupled with the fact that game keepers realised they didn’t actually pose a threat to the game birds they protected, buzzards started coming back and eventually arrived in Suffolk in the 1990s. I do remember hearing the first buzzard in the sky over Wyken Vineyard; such plaintive cry, almost like the mewing of a kitten, it’s hard to believe it comes from a medium sized bird of prey.

It is a similar story with the majestic red kite, persecuted until it was nearly extinct, hanging on in Scotland and West England but now returning to our skies with their unmistakable reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

The time has come… the new 2024 season is here!

It’s amazing how Spring has sprung – snowdrops, daffodil’s and the clocks are changing, so we have four weeks to opening and Easter.

Message from Chairman, Graham:

“Some of the displays have been improved by the volunteers, who have been working tirelessly over the winter. We’re looking to improve visitor numbers again this year and get over 3000 through the gates, exceeding last year’s numbers.

The Opening Day will have re-enactment personnel on site and also on April 14 the Bury Retro Car Club will be at the Tower most of the day.

We look forward to a busy season and hope to see you soon. Future events will be included here each month, in the local media and on our Facebook page.”

EASTER SUNDAY, MARCH 31ST WILL BE OUR START – OPEN EVERY SUNDAY 10AM TILL 4PM. (Don’t forget the clocks change on Saturday 30th – they Go Forward). I’m sure that ‘BaconO’Clock’ (at 11am) and CakeO’Clock (3pm) will entice visitors to the Tea Room. Well worth visiting after your tour of the museum.

Our continuing appeal, please also remember We Need You in 2024!!

There are plenty of ‘jobs’ and projects that you can become involved in. Small contributions, even if only once a month, all help. We are also always looking for items relating to the airfield, museum or town which we can display. Aviation books, photographs, models (including Corgi or Dinky vehicles) can generate valuable income to sustain the displays and facilities. Again, please can you help?

As a reminder – memberships are due on the 1st April and if you are not a member, why not join? You are very welcome. We are really hoping for a great season – we look forward to you joining us.

See you again next month in April, here in The Directory.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

No doubt the long wet winter will soon be behind us and our thoughts will turn to the summer, cricket being a game played from April to September.

At Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club winter coaching sessions are going well.

Support of the cricket club comes in many ways and sponsorship is a very good way to be involved. This is very much a two way partnership for the sponsor to enjoy some cricket and opportunity to promote their company to a wide audience.

The Victory Sports Ground hosts a large number of cricket and other events in the summer and is the home of Sporting 87 Football Club from autumn to the spring.

The Community Pavilion hosts many events from parties to training courses all year round.

Sponsorship packages for the pavilion and many other aspects of the cricket club, football club and ground are available on request try the website www.bsecc.co.uk for information.

If you are interested in taking up or returning to play cricket you will be made very welcome.

Having the right attitude for gratitude

As we begin to think of the most important part of the Christian calendar, many Christians will be avoiding something they enjoy and may take for granted on a day-to-day basis.

Most Christians want to follow the 40 days and nights Jesus spent on a mountain without meals and time to reflect on his purpose on earth.

Often it is not the item we are doing without but the purpose behind this change we have made for 40 days and nights starting on Ash Wednesday and finishing on Easter Sunday.

I personally have tried; no alcohol, no chocolate a

couple of times and it was really hard. As soon as you are not able to have something you want it more. This is why I don’t agree with dieting.

So, this year I have decided to introduce something rather than take something away. Not because I don’t believe but because sometimes it is harder to add something new to your life and be consistent than it is to take something away.

What may you ask do I want to do that I have not been consistent with? Well actually its reading the Bible. When I did the Alpha course, I did start reading the Bible but like most books I started it at the

beginning. If you have ever tried reading the Bible the Old Testament is quite heavy going and it didn’t take long for me to move onto a lighter autobiography. This time I am reading the New Testament, as you read this, I will be a couple of weeks in so I would welcome you asking me how it’s going and what I have learnt!

I am praying that by enriching my knowledge I will have more gratitude for the right attitude. I will reflect of the peace Jesus gave his mind and body to embrace its capabilities, both in taking away good food and drink but adding time for praying and time to reflect on why I am here and what I can offer.

Jesus Tape

Duck Tape was invented in World War Two by Vesta Stoudt, who worked in an American munitions factory.

She was worried that the tape that she was using to seal ammunition boxes would be difficult for soldiers to tear-off during a battle. And so, she had the idea of putting some adhesive on the back of a strong material called ‘duck webbing’. It worked brilliantly!

But today, Duck Tape has many more uses than Mrs Stoudt could ever have imagined.

Interestingly, in Finland, it is called ‘Jesus Tape’. I wonder why? Perhaps it’s because it saves lives. For example, astronauts on the ill-fated Apollo 13 moon mission used it to make life-saving repairs to their oxygen system before returning safely to earth.

At Easter, Christians remember Jesus’ self-sacrifice on the Cross, where he took the consequences of all our selfish choices upon himself and died in your place and in

mine; enabling God to forgive us completely. But then, three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, proving that he really can offer us life after death! Another reason why the Finns might call it Jesus Tape, is because it creates a very strong bond. On a later expedition to the Moon, astronauts used Jesus Tape to make emergency repairs to their lunar buggy which were strong enough to outlast their mission.

Jesus said that everyone who believes in him can begin a relationship with God that will literally last forever. Become a Christian, and Jesus will help you form a very strong bond with God which may well become the most valuable relationship in your life!

Of course, it could be called Jesus Tape because it’s great at repairing things. In emergencies, Jesus Tape has even been used to repair aircraft wings.

Many Christians will tell you that Jesus has repaired lots of things in their lives.

By working in our hearts, his Spirit makes us more loving, peaceful and forgiving. He also helps us to break unhelpful patterns of behaviour and to mend broken relationships.

On Easter Day, like the tape that bears his name, we celebrate that Jesus saves lives and He creates a strong bond between us and God. And that he’s great at repairing things.

So, why not join us for our Easter Day service, at 10.30am, at Southgate Community Centre? Then, you’ll discover all that Jesus can do for you.

Moreton Hall WI

Have you ever wondered what happens to the rubbish in your bins?

Moreton Hall WI welcomed Sarah Jane Clarke, the Education and Information Officer from FCC Environment to our February meeting. She gave us a very entertaining and informative talk about waste management in Suffolk, explaining what can be recycled and why.

From green waste that is turned into compost, to toys from plastic bottles much can be done to recycle which reduces the need for new and saves the Earth’s precious resources. Non-recyclable waste from our black bins goes to the Energy From Waste facility where it is used as a fuel to heat up water to make steam, which powers the turbine to produce electricity.

Despite the seriousness of the topic it was a light hearted evening which ended with Sarah answering our questions before we completed a short quiz to win the coveted mini wheelie bin!

Our March meeting is on Weds 6th March at the Moreton Hall Community Centre. Our speaker is from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and will be accompanied by Hearing Dog ‘Linus’.

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome, and your first meeting is free!

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole and we are one month closer to longer days and better weather (we hope) and of course the unofficial start of the golf season here in the UK, THE MASTERS.

We have already seen many of the worlds top players fighting it out so far this year, so with not long to go until the first major of the year it will be interesting to see who can hold their form until April or who is gearing up this month to peak for The Masters. Only time will tell.

COACHES CORNER – SLOW PLAY AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU

So this topic has been talked about in the media, and it’s always a topic of discussion in most golf clubhouse’s across the world. The normal items are detailed as it’s unnecessary, it makes it impossible to get any kind of rhythm going and generally that it’s ruined a persons morning.

If you get to the course already thinking about these issues and how they “ruined” your last round of golf, then you are already looking for signs to bring up this issue again. It’s something you can’t control and if focused upon repeatedly will become your only focus.

I am not saying that the game doesn’t need speeding up at times, however if it is a slow day out there why not embrace it and enjoy the time on course.

Most of us play this great game for fun and enjoyment with friends and family, so to have a few extra minutes chatting and laughing isn’t all bad. Maybe with a few adjustments on those slower days you can keep your round going in the right direction.

Ryder Cup player

Stephen Gallacher did just that, he recently revealed he recognised slow play was part of his job, and that rather than getting irritated about it, he went to see someone about adjusting his pre-shot routine for slow days.

(Today’s Golfer)

Routine will play a massive part in preparing you for your shot when the time arrives, it will allow you stay in control at critical times.

How good is your routine? Does it stand up under pressure?

So next time it’s slow on course, maybe strike up more conversation about other topics and slow your routine down to match the conditions you find yourself in.

This way you shift the focus away from the issue of slow play and how it’s ruining your day and back onto reason why

If you are struggling if any aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.

you are there in the first place… Leave the inquest until you get to the bar.
