Welcome to the July issue

Well, we were looking forward to some sunshine, and boy have we seen some! What a lovely few weeks it’s been.

Congratulations to everyone who completed their GCSE’s and A-levels last month, now you can relax a bit and enjoy the Summer before your next adventures!

This month sees the return of Motorsport East to the town centre on Sunday 16th July. With more than 65 different exhibits, it’s a free family event well worth a visit, find out more on pages 8-9.

Our friends at Orissa are generously offering readers up to 50% off their food bill when eating in this month, so why not treat yourself to a night off of cooking? See more about the deal on page 41.

If you are cooking in-house, we have a lovely Summer recipe to try on page 40 – Squash, mint and Pecorino pasta. Great, if like me, you get stuck in a rut of weekday meal choices!

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events.

Take care and we’ll see you in August.

in the driving seat for Motorsport East

Hit the gas and head for Bury St Edmunds town centre on Sunday July 16 as the town revs up for a day of free family entertainment with the return of Motorsport East.

The town centre will play host to a show of cars and sporting vehicles with more than 65 different exhibits all curated by well-known local rally cross commentator and Motorsport correspondent Arthur Debenham. Helping to steer this annual Our Bury St Edmunds event is Laura Cooledge – a Women in Motorsport Ambassador and Club Development Officer at Anglia Motor Sport Club.

Motorsport East will feature some spectacular competition vehicles with one of the highlights being the Ford GT40 – a motorsport legend that in 1966 broke Ferrari’s winning streak at the Le Mans 24-hour race and went on to win it for a further three years, dominating the event at the end of the decade and also winning four FIA International titles.

For those who want to fuel their passion for fast cars then this is an event not to be missed, but, as with all Our Bury St Edmunds events, there’s something for all ages including bumper cars and a roundabout. The family attractions at arc shopping centre, will be free of charge. There’ll also be plenty of town centre cafes, bars and restaurants to take a pit stop and grab a bite to eat.

Our Bury St Edmunds Event Manager Jackie Regan said: “Motorsport East is a chance to bring the family to a fun and free day out. Cornhill and Buttermarket will be transformed into a celebration of cars and motorsports but there will be lots more around the town centre to see and do.

“If you’ve dreamed of living life in the fast lane then this is the event for you. And when you’re ready to take your foot off the gas there’ll be a choice of our many hospitality businesses in the town centre to welcome you.”

If you’ve always wanted to be in the driving seat yourself then there’s a rare opportunity to drive an F1 Stealth Racer Simulator –at no charge. Take part in our competition and you could find yourself winning a fabulous gift card prize.

And if you want to discover how to turn your dream of participating in the sport into reality then there’s no better place to be. There’ll be plenty of people currently involved in the industry whether it’s racing, rally cross, karting and many more motorsport disciplines there’s a chance to talk to those involved and find out what it takes to get behind the wheel.

Every year the event raises funds for charity and in 2022 close to £1,000 was generously given. This year the chosen charity of Motorsport East is one that has touched the lives of many in our area – St Nicholas Hospice Care. Any donation you are able to give will help support their work for and within our community.

Admission to Motorsport East is free and it runs from 10am to 4pm. For more information about the event and other town centre activities visit www.ourburystedmunds.com or follow our social media channels.

GET INVOLVED IN CHARITY FUNDRAISER AT LOCAL GYM FACILITY

Local people are being urged to get involved in a charity fundraising event Saturday July 8th hosted by Eventus22, a small-group personal training facility based in Bury St. Edmunds.

Gym members and trainers will be pushing a weightedsled the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles up and down the recently launched facilities on Moreton Hall. It’s all in support of charities chosen by two families within the Eventus22 community that have been devastated by the loss of a child.

Members and non-members are encouraged to attend between 7am and 7pm on the day, where there will also be live music, a bouncy

castle, food and drinks and a raffle.

Organisers are also hoping for support from local businesses that can provide refreshments or raffle prizes, in return for a package of marketing support around the event on social media and with Eventus22 members.

A silent charity auction has already been held and the facility hopes to raise more than £2,000, which will be shared between The Isobel Sheppard Fund for Sarcoma UK and CP Teens. The charities were chosen by the families of 15-year-old Isobel Sheppard and 17-year-old Owen Colman, who both tragically passed away in December 2022.

James McLaren, owner of Eventus22, said: “We’re extremely grateful for all the donations being made by local businesses and individuals, now we’re looking for support in making this event the huge success it deserves to be.

“We believe that contributions from local businesses, whether in the form of gift hampers, gift cards or experience days, will make a significant impact on the money raised for the two charities. If you are able to contribute, please let us know by Friday 29th June via amy@ eventus22.fit and we will be happy to arrange a collection of any items.”

The topic of ‘Movement’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series

How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well.

Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information for how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money.

Top tips

l If you’re at work, try ‘walk and talk meetings’ in person or remotely

l Take advantage of the lighter summer evenings to get out into nature

l Visit your local pool – movement in water is particularly useful for people with limited mobility

l Make leisure time more active – try to stretch or exercise during TV adverts

l Join a local walking club – it will also help meet your need for community

l Take part in a free workout on YouTube, or download great apps such as Couch to 5k or Active10

l Try sitting exercises - perfect if you’re sitting at a desk or have limited mobility.

Where can I find out more?

Movement in mind

Being active; any movement that burns energy is great for our mental wellbeing. Just 30 minutes brisk walking 3-4 times a week is enough to trigger endorphins equivalent to anti-depressant medication. There are many other benefits including better sleep, calming stress, reducing anxiety and even building confidence and self-esteem. There are some great resources to help everyone be active, including people with a disability or long-term health condition.

Movement Mornings

DanceEast, the home of dance in the East of England is supporting the Be Well, Feel Well campaign by running five movement mornings for everyone to get moving at Holywells Park and Christchurch Park in Ipswich between Monday 24 July - Friday 28 July, 10.30am - 12.30pm.

Chrissie Moore, Programme Manager at DanceEast said: “We know that dancing and moving your body is a great way for people to start the day. Movement Mornings have been designed to give people the opportunity to come and join DanceEast for a fun-filled morning of movement.

People of all ages are invited to join in and we’re really looking forward to demonstrating how movement through dance is great for the mind and body!”

Move more outdoors

We’re spoilt for choice in Suffolk, with many opportunities to be active outdoors. With the summer holidays looming, there’s no better time to find fun, free activities supporting families to be active.

Outdoor events: Find free events where you live with lots of activities for children and young people (see the Movement Mornings section).

Parkrun: There are 24 parkruns in Suffolk providing free, weekly opportunities to be active. You don’t have to run, and they’re a great chance to meet people. Consider volunteering to support your local parkrun.

In the garden or open spaces: Create an obstacle course with props or by making a route. Time each other and improve your personal best. Invite a friend to play a ball game or invent a new one.

Plan a trip to your local beach or river: Go on a textures scavenger hunt; find something smooth, fluffy, bumpy or things with different colours.

At the park: Revisit some of the childhood games that you used to play and teach them to the children.

On the street, or at the shops: Set the children a task such as ‘Can you find the post-box?’ or ‘Can you find the fruit section?’

Bury Physiotherapy Clinic are working alongside AEDdonate to have a defibrillator installed in their community.

30,000 people die each year from out of hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), 620 of these are people under the age of 35 and 270 of these deaths happen to children within schools. If defibrillation takes place within the first three minutes of a SCA, the patient’s chances of survival increase by upwards of 80%.

Having the defibrillator installed means that it can be deployed by the local ambulance trust in a bid to give the patient the all-important shock to the heart prior to the ambulance arrival. The defibrillator is by no means a replacement to the ambulance service, it just allows patient treatment to commence immediately.

Come and join us!

Girlguiding members are out and about this term enjoying outdoor activities.

10th Bury Guides have been practising their outdoor cooking skills and Guides from all over Suffolk enjoyed the ‘Give it a go’ event in Ipswich. 1st Moreton Hall Brownies are off to Hautbois Activity Centre and 2nd

Bury Brownies are spending a weekend at Stoke Ash. Rainbows are having outdoor meetings and planning outdoor promise ceremonies.

All of this activity relies on adult volunteers. Being a leader is very rewarding, providing an opportunity to work with girls, develop personal skills and have fun yourself! Maybe you remember being a Brownie or Guide yourself and trying new activities. Perhaps you have

been a leader in the past. If so, we’d love to see you back. We particularly need people who would like to work with Brownies (7-10) and Guides (10-14). Both sections have waiting lists and our current units do not have enough space.

The good news is that a new Rainbow unit has just opened in Bury for girls aged 4-7 and Rangers has opened up for 14-18 year olds. Both have vacancies.

If you think you have something to offer why not find out more about volunteering with Girlguiding on the website?

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

As we near the end of another school year and reflect on such busy and inspirational events over the past three terms what stands out is that we pride ourselves on our sense of community and our "Hardwick Family", children receive amazing support from all our fantastic teachers and support staff and especially daily from the inspirational Ms Dulieu.

As always it has been a busy month, well done to our children that took part in Phonics Screening Week and congratulations on your hard work and good results.

Again our pupils have been busy representing the school in sporting activities, Mr Rampley and Mrs Orr took some Year 4, 5 and 6 children to an interschool outdoor adventure event at Abbeycroft Leisure where they showed great resilience, perseverance and spirit.

A team of Year 5 & 6 pupils participated in a netball tournament at King Edward School and won all of their games finishing first in their group so well done all.

Finally I am sure all that had the pleasure of watching the

LKS2 - 25th May 2023

LKS2 production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Camelot" were impressed by the amazing acting and sensational singing, we are all

incredibly proud of the children and special thanks for all the staff for their hard work at putting such a great show together.

Bio Vest & Sleeve Compression garment donation

LSS proudly donated a Bio Vest and Sleeve Compression garment to West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service at its 5th June meeting. This donation was also made possible by a very generous £500 donation from Bury Rotary Club, with the garment being purchased through the My Wish Charity. The Bio Vest and Sleeve is attached to a purpose built compression pump which then inflates the garment to

provide gentle Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) to lymphoedema and lipodema patients. Laura Beaumont, Lymphoedema nurse specialist, QN, advises that “the garment is already at the West Suffolk Hospital clinic ready to be used, it is so great that we can now use this for our breast lymphoedema patients”.

Tips to make the summer sunshine more enjoyable for those living with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema. Avoid exposing the affected lymphoedema and/or lipoedema area to heat and sun, which can cause inflammation, so protect your skin from the sun by covering up with clothes or wearing sun cream with a SPFactor30 minimum. Best to use SPF sun cream AND insect repellent before any exposure to the sun. Don’t forget you can still burn through your compression hosiery. Applying sun cream 30 minutes before putting on a compression garments can help prevent the garment from then sliding off.

Coming together on ZOOM

Since the pandemic started, we have used various methods, to make sure the group remained in contact with each other, ready to support each other through the difficult times. One method was Zoom, our Zoom Saturday coffee mornings, which helped to fill in the weekends with some laughter and an occasional attempt to put the world to rights. Knowing you would see each other, helped those moments when we felt alone, moments when we needed the support of each other.

We occasionally have a quiz, which can be fun. We even tried Bingo a couple of times, then, last year we played a murder game, which we thoroughly enjoyed, the difficulty lies in making a date, when everyone can join in. We will have a go at anything,

well almost anything! We also use Zoom, to meet up for some art on Wednesdays. These started as a “bit of fun,” but have resulted in a few very determined and capable artists. We are now able to see live demonstrations on zoom, in both watercolour and drawing.

We have continued to use Zoom, since the world has almost gone back to normal. Some of the group are still shielding, making it a very important tool to help keep in touch with the each other, as well as finding out about meetings and any news. It is important that everyone still feels part of the Chronic Pain Support Group, knowing that eventually everyone will be able to meet up again,

Allow the light to filter through

and life will return to a new “normal”.

I like to think that Zoom has helped to make us an even tighter group of close friends. Here for each other, even now when most people are leading busy lives again, they still join in Zoom, when they can.

At this point in time, Zoom will carry on every Wednesday and Saturday, and will do so for the forthcoming months.

Speakers - are needed for dates in 2024. If you have a pain related/non-pain related topic or interactive skill that you would like to share, we would like to hear from you.

We have had some fantastic donations in recently thanks to a variety of fundraisers.

Fun day at Lake Avenue

First up is Lake Avenue Stores who held a fun day. Unfortunately, they held it on a day of torrential rain but it didn’t stop play and owners, Mash and Arti Odedra, managed to raise £500.

The fun day was a thank you to their customers for all their support, especially during the Covid 19 pandemic and they really went to town with a magician, games, cakes galore and a fantastic tombola.

Mash said “It was difficult for everyone during the pandemic, but the community stuck by us. It was always in our mind to do a thank you event

and on the back of that we thought we could raise some money for a local charity. We asked our followers and My WiSH

came up trumps.”

Huge thanks to Mash and Arti and to all those that attended the day.

Afternoon teas supports the cancer unit

Mum and daughter duo, Andrea and Jodie Davey served up nearly 130 afternoon teas for the cancer unit at the West Suffolk Hospital and raised an incredible £1983.

The couple wanted to say thank you for the care given to friends and family and, as they both own catering businesses, what better way to do this than to raise money with a pop-up tea shop.

Andrea, owner of Elite Cakes and Buffets and Jodie, who owns Kitty

Bakes, sold out of tickets within two minutes with 100 people attending Melton Pavilion and another 30 enjoying their afternoon teas as a takeaway.

Andrea said “We managed to get some wonderful prizes to raffle off too. Lots of these were from Jodie’s friends who are all small business owners. We are pleased to support the

Macmillan unit at the West Suffolk Hospital so people can see just where their donation is going”.

Runner runs through the night for the maternity unit

Keen runner, James Seager, did not one 5k park run but 20 park runs starting at 5.30pm and finishing at 9.30am the next day.

James followed the route of the Bury Park Run at Nowton Park with the final lap being on the Saturday morning as the other park runners ran their 5k.

The aim was to raise money for the maternity unit at the hospital as he “wanted to give something back” after the birth of his daughter, Bella and his amazing efforts have resulted in a donation of £575.

James said “I want to ensure everyone receives the same care my wife and Bella received.” It was a complex birth and, at times dangerous, as Bella’s heart rate dropped but James continued to say, “The staff were brilliant from beginning to end and we can’t thank them enough”.

SUMMER SQUASH, MINT & PECORINO PASTA

Squash, mint and lemon juice lighten up this fresh summer pasta made in under 30 minutes for the perfect weeknight meal.

INGREDIENTS:

12 oz rigatoni

2 tbsp olive oil

1 shallot, halved and thinly sliced

1 1/2 lb. corgette and summer squash (about 4 small), thinly sliced into halfmoons

Salt and pepper

3 oz. pecorino cheese (about 1 cup), grated, plus more for serving

1/3 cup of mint, thinly sliced

1 tbsp. lemon juice

METHOD:

Cook pasta per package directions. Reserve ¾ cup cooking liquid, then drain.

Meanwhile, heat oil in large, deep skillet on medium. Cook shallot, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Add squash/corgette and ½ teaspoon each salt and pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until squash is very tender but still holds its shape, 10 to 12 minutes.

Add pasta to skillet and toss with squash and cheese, adding reserved cooking liquid 2 tablespoons at a time, to form a sauce that coats pasta. Fold in mint and lemon juice. Top with additional cheese and black pepper if desired.

Lemon & yogurt chicken flatbreads

Make these family-friendly chicken wraps with lemon, garlic and cinnamon marinade – on a barbecue if the sun is shining. Serve in flatbreads with yoghurt.

Ingredients:

2 skinless chicken breasts, cut into strips

1 lemon

1 tsp dried oregano (optional)

1 garlic clove, crushed pinch of cinnamon

1 tbsp olive oil

4 flatbreads

4 tbsp Greek yogurt

¼ red pepper, finely chopped

1 Little Gem lettuce, finely chopped

Method:

Put the chicken in a bowl. Pare strips of zest from the lemon using a vegetable peeler, then juice the lemon too. Add the peel and half the juice to the chicken, along with the oregano (if using), garlic, cinnamon and oil. Mix well, cover and chill for an hour. The lemon juice will start to ‘cook’ the chicken, so don’t leave for longer.

Heat the barbecue. If you are using coals, wait until they turn white. If you are indoors, heat a griddle pan. Thread the chicken strips onto a couple of metal skewers to stop them falling through the grate (you don’t need to do this for the griddle), then grill for a couple of mins each side. The strips will cook through quickly so don’t leave them too long. Season if you like.

Warm the flatbreads on the edge of the barbecue (or on the griddle) for a minute, then transfer them to plates and spread each with ½ tbsp yogurt. Divide the chicken strips between them, then dot on the remaining yogurt and sprinkle over the pepper and lettuce. Fold or roll the flatbreads to eat.

Moreton Hall WI

The speaker at our June meeting was supposed to be Amanda Sutherland but, unfortunately, she had covid so was unable to come.

We have re-booked her for our November meeting when she will be talking about trends in costume design and fashion. We were so lucky that Mary Newton was able to step in at literally the last minute.

Members may remember an article about Mary in the April edition of WI Life. Mary was a London-based forensic pathologist for forty years. She worked on some very high-profile cases that you may have heard of, such as the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the Night Stalker attacks.

Her riveting talk entitled ‘Blood, Sweat and Fears’ covered a variety of topics such as the power of DNA profiling and blood pattern analysis.

Her enthusiasm for her job was evident and we could all imagine the way a hammer could throw droplets of blood at different angles. We were given the background and some of the forensic issues connected with very familiar cases which she had worked on.

Contrary to public perception, Mary assured us that forensic science is not a male dominated profession. Women are well represented and successful in the field because they tend to be tenacious and meticulous –

both qualities that make for good forensic scientists.

By the end of the evening, she had certainly proved the point. Her talk was absolutely fascinating, and I suspect that most of us will never look at Sellotape in the same way again!

We are a friendly group who meet one the first Wednesday of the month at Moreton Hall Community Centre at 7.30 pm.

If you would like to join us, please feel free to come along for a ‘taster’ session. If you contact us first we will look out for you.

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome, and your first meeting is free!

Craft Corner

WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN!

Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Why not like my facebook page www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes and follow me on instagram @thecraftyfoxes to find out more about adult and children’s craft workshops for 2023.

This months’ make continues our Summer holiday theme of last month. Make yourself these quirky lollipops. Guaranteed to not melt on a hot day or rot your teeth!!!

YOU WILL NEED:

Multicoloured pipe cleaners, white paper straws and glue dots or a hot glue gun (and an adult helper if using glue gun) coloured ribbon to match pipe cleaners.

Place 2 different coloured pipe cleaners side by side. Roll them up like a snail. Glue dot along the way to keep in a firm roll.

Place a glue dot on the end of both pipe cleaners and when you have rolled to the end, poke them into the straw and hold with glue.

Tie some ribbon at the bottom to finish off neatly.

Use in pretend games, or add wool and hang to trees in your garden.

TOP TIP…

Try using red and white ones to make candy cane lollipops to keep to go on your Christmas tree in December.

We hope you found last months’ article on greenhouse gas emissions from various forms of transport useful, but as promised this month we will return to home insulation, concentrating on the roof space. This is a good time to pop up into the attic to make sure you have adequate insulation to help reduce your bills this Winter. As you can see below in an uninsulated home, up to 35% of heat can be lost through the roof, insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is a simple and effective way to reduce heat loss, reduce your heating bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

There are 4 types of roof and loft insulation with an average price of about £890 but make sure you take advice to ensure you use the best type for your home.

1. Spray foam roof insulation - This is an expensive method of insulation, a semidetached 3 bedroomed house could cost around £2,500. Spray foam insulation is a liquid foam which is applied to the underside of the roof directly onto the slates, tiles or roofing felt and to the load bearing rafter timbers and sets into an insulating layer.

It has been in use for more than 30 years and is now becoming increasingly popular but a word of warning it can cause humidity and damp problems. In some circumstances mortgage companies may refuse to lend money if it is installed. Please take advice before going ahead.

3. Blanket insulation - This is the world’s most popular and widely used form of insulation. Blanket insulation is low cost and available as simple rolls of varying thickness of rock / glass mineral fibre or flameproofed sheep’s wool. If access is easy and your loft joists are regular, it is simple to install as long as you use the correct PPE. The green credentials of blanket insulation are also strong, glass wool is made from up to 86% recycled materials, mineral wool consists of up to 70% recycled materials and the sheep’s wool is a natural resource. Note - UK government guidelines now stipulate a minimum insulation depth of 270mm.

4. Loose fill insulation - If your loft is hard to access, you can have blown insulation installed by a professional into the gaps between joists, they will use specialist equipment to blow loose, fire-retardant insulation material such as cellulose fibre, mineral rock wool, cork granules or even recycled newspaper into the loft. Loose-fill insulation works well in inaccessible spaces and for topping up.

Grants

Everyone is potentially eligible for 50% –100% grants, have a look at –www.freeinsulationscheme.org.uk to check if your home applies.

Savings

According to The Energy Saving Trust the average installation cost of loft insulation is around £890 but can cost up to £2,500. Insulating your loft space can save between £330 (= 895kg CO₂) and £590 (= 1600kg CO₂) a year on energy bills.

If you are eligible for a 100% grant from the government you will see instant savings, but if you have to pay for installation there will be an extended payback period of up to 8 years.

Carbon dioxide savings start once the embedded CO₂e in an insulation material is removed from the equation.

Now is a good time to act as installers will become busy as we move into Autumn.

2. Rigid insulation boards - If you want to use your loft as a living space, you can insulate your room-inthe-roof by insulating it with fixed rigid insulation boards between the roof rafters. Boards must be cut to the correct width so that they fit snugly between the rafters. Greener insulation options are available which use cork, straw and wood board. This method may be expensive but is excellent for insulating loft conversions.

Looking forward… Or looking back?

Do you tend to look forward to things you may have arranged like a show, a holiday, or meeting a friend for a catch up? Or do you enjoy thinking about the things you have already done and the memories that they evoke?

In the Bible there are many examples that show us how Jesus was able to teach the disciples how we should forgive those that may have done something wrong in their past and forgiveness can be a very hard task in itself. Jesus said at the last supper that some of the disciples will betray him which at the time they could not believe.

I know when I used to babysit for friends in my 20’s I would listen to the rules parents had for putting children to bed and what to do if they got up. I remember thinking I am not going to be so soft or lenient with my own children. Yet 10 years later there I was listening to my baby cry and the emotions telling me one thing while the latest theory was to leave them for 5 minutes (which seemed like an hour) before checking they were ok and not picking them up for a hug. It taught me a life lesson that we can all be judgemental when it isn’t us that are in the situation.

I try to live ‘in the moment’ absorbing all the good things that happen in my day, but I also love planning things for the future which I know will bring joy. Recently I witnessed my mum receiving an Honouree Fellowship from the UEA (University of East Anglia) for services to Nurse Education, while my mum has always been inspirational this was such an accolade. We set off as a family to see this happen, but traffic & time were not on our side. Although I witnessed the Nurse who benefited

from mum’s support give an incredible speech, I was devastated not to have seen the fellowship given to my mum.

You may have memories that are mixed like this and with Faith I know that I may not be perfect, things may not go the way I planned them to, but God will believe in us if we believe in him. Our summer brings the joy of families taking time to be together and not having to watch the time getting to school, picking up children, helping with homework, clubs and termly activities. I remember that school holidays can be hard work as parents look at ways to entertain the children and juggle work commitments with making memories with fast growing families.

We have been blessed with having the option to go to Keswick to stay with family over the years, but when the

children were young, I actually couldn’t wait to get back to work and school routine as there was always a challenge to keep everyone happy, yet being at home and going to work I could enjoy the routine of each day. Now my family are on the verge of leaving home I remember how lovely it was to have those opportunities, however challenging they were, to get away.

As a Christian I hope that I don’t take the simple things for granted and I believe while things may not go to plan God has a way of helping us reflect on the good things. I hope your summer brings you many things to look forward to and when I write again you will have great memories of your summer too tell others about.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

OPEN THE BOOK!

At the invitation of Hardwick Primary School, a couple of times a month a company of strolling players from Southgate Church leads the Monday Morning Assembly with a short piece of drama called Open the Book.

With costumes and props, Bible stories are shared with the children in a way that is fun, interactive and memorable. The stories spark imagination, inspire exploration, give hope, create a smile, teach important lessons and connect generations.

The most recent story was the well-known David the Giant Killer. The huge Goliath caused quite a stir when David’s stone hit him and he collapsed to the ground with a loud clatter! At the end we asked

the children to think of a problem they wanted help with. Finally, this prayer was said.. Dear God, when our problems seem very big –please remind us that you are there to help us. And if the children wanted to make the prayer their own – to say - Amen.

Ali Burgess, Team Leader adds: “We all really enjoy going to Hardwick Primary and telling these stories –

especially as the children are so receptive.”

If you’re part of a local church and are interested in joining our team, contact Southgate Church’s Family and Community Worker, Ali, at alison.burgess@ southgatechurch.org.uk or 07940 247038.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole. The US Open didn’t disappoint and we have a new major champion in Wyndham Clark. After being told by his mother just before her passing to go and win big, he did just that! It’s amazing to see someone work through personally tragedy and have success after. Finishing at -10 just one shot ahead of Rory Mcllroy, once again he finishes close to another major title. Surely it’s just a matter of time…. Isn’t it?

This month we will be previewing THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at Royal Liverpool. THE BIG QUESTION… Who will win this year? My pick will as always be RORY, he has to break his run and go one place better this time. PLEASE!!

COACHES CORNER – HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ROUGH!

So with the US OPEN on the television last month and you will have all seen the worlds best have to recover from the rough. Below are some helpful tips from escaping these tricky lies. If you put these simply tips into play next time you’re in a tricky spot in the rough, you will find yourself back in play and making better scores.

Things to DO

Don’t get too brave from these lies, select enough loft to get the ball from these lies. After selecting a club opening face slightly will allow you to stop the club head closing at impact by the longer grass length.

Reposition your weight, shift across onto your lead foot. This will allow you to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball and with the lofted club you have selected will

give you a great chance to escape this lie.

Swing steeper and hold on tight, being steeper and holding it a bit tighter to the club through impact will help you stop the club face closing through impact and get you back into play.

Things to AVOID

Don’t try and help it up and out… you have changed your set up to help yourself come down steeper so don’t try and help it out, and lean back. Just commit to these changes and swing down and through the shot, try not to let your weight fall onto your back foot.

Do not expect full control over this shot, remember it’s a shot you’re either trying to get back into position or are happy if it hits the green or surrounding areas.

If you expect to much from these lies then you will often find yourself playing the same shot again or worse, get back

Enjoy your golf in July and I will speak to you again next month.

in play first before taking on shots to the green.

Hopefully putting these simply steps into your game when you need to escape some tricky lies will help.

If you are having problems with this or any other part of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf.
