Welcome to the January issue Happy New Year! Well Christmas went by in a flash didn’t it? And here we are in 2024. I wonder what this year will have in store for us? If you feel like you’ve overindulged a little over the festive period, we have a great detoxifying smoothie recipe on page 40 which might be just what the doctor ordered! January can feel a little ‘meh’ after the excitement of Christmas, so why not treat yourself to a meal out? There’s a great early bird offer from Orissa on page 41 which will save you some pennies. January is a good time for new starts, maybe it’s time to take up a new hobby? If you’ve been thinking about getting a bit more active in 2024, you’ll find lots of health and fitness groups throughout the magazine, there really is something for everyone. We feature so many groups and associations in each issue, there are plenty of options for a new hobby. Or maybe it’s time to get more involved in your local community via the community centres or churches?

Jill is set to share her slimming secrets Jill has transformed her life after losing 3 stone 10lbs and is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Jill has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at the Moreton Hall group are getting ready to welcome Jill as their new Consultant when she takes over the group Thursday 28th December. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 68% of the Suffolk's population is now overweight or obese, and Jill says her new role has never been more important. Jill says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started.” “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost my weight without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own

Consultant and group. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun.” “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people, many of whom have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. “ Like Jill, Slimming World Consultants are all former members who have lost weight at their local group themselves and groups are set up as micro businesses in the heart of local communities. Consultants receive training in Slimming World’s healthy eating and physical activity programmes and learn how to use the power of group support to empower members to take control of their own weight loss journey. As self-employed microentrepreneurs, Consultants also learn how to build a successful community-based business.

Jill says she can’t wait for the new challenges running her own business will bring. “For me becoming a selfemployed franchisee was a great option. I wanted a job that was well paid, flexible and could fit around my busy family life and I wanted to avoid a regular ‘nine-to-five’ routine, so launching my own Slimming World group was an ideal option.” Kelly Cooper, who runs Slimming World’s Saturday morning group at Southgate Community Centre and manages a team of 14 consultants across Bury, Stowmarket & Sudbury, says: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Jill's experience of being a successful Slimming World member and her kind and warm personality and great sense of humour I just know that she’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.”

Jill’s Slimming World group will be held at Moreton Hall Community Centre every Thursday at 9.30am, 5.30pm & 7.30pm. For more info or to join Jill’s group, call her on 07803 332097.

SOUTHGATE

Community Centre

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We start the 2024 journey with the hope that you had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As we say farewell to last year the Community Centre was busier than ever and full of festive fun and cheer with parties, a mammoth craft sale, Southgate Church’s hugely popular annual Southgate’s Got Christmas, wreath making workshop and the Family Christmas Disco with Bertie Bassett. This was kindly subsidised by our Councillor Richard Rout using the funds allocated to him by Suffolk CC, also supporting the Family Harvest Barn Dance

with the Hoxon Hundred Ceilidh Band. As the montage shows it was a fantastic night much enjoyed by all and an event cemented in the diary, one of many initiatives we have planned for this year. On Sunday 14 January, we welcome the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, Rt. Rev Martin Seeley who will be preaching in the Main Hall that morning. The service starts at 10.30am. Come along and meet him over coffee afterwards. Southgate Church is celebrating its Golden Anniversary in 2024, having

BINGO

its base in the Community Centre since 1977.

So remember if you would like to hire any of our versatile halls and our fabulous facility just pop in and see our Centre Manager Jackie weekdays except Wednesdays or give her a call. Do you know that we have a 4.5/5 rating on Google? This is the latest 5-star review we received in December from Jacqueline: “First visit, it was fantastic for the children, so much for them to do, singing and puppets were fabulous, tea & coffee & cakes for all.”

Friday 12th January Friday 9th February and March 8 at 7pm

Contact us on 01284 703705 or email: jackie@southgatechurch.org.uk Or visit the centre website: www.southgatecommunity.org.uk

FIND YOUR

A monthly muse on all thing’s health & wellbeing with Carole Baker, Founder of the self centre

Why do we feel the need to Detox in January? Is it our minds or our bodies that need to be detoxified or is it a bit of both? The festive season can be overwhelming in many ways; physically and mentally we are consuming stuff we wouldn’t normally. We subject our bodies and our minds to way more suffering as we munch our way through food that often doesn’t agree with us or benefit us and we find ourselves in situations that are emotionally stressful. What can we do to try and bring ourselves back to a state of balance or “ease”? It is often January when we succumb to” dis-ease” - the debilitating virus or feel down in the dumps. There are many ways we can gently detox our bodies and minds to allow us to feel more “at -ease “and to rebalance our equilibrium. As humans we are designed to be able to adapt and rebalance constantly according to our environments but maybe nowadays, we are subjecting ourselves to constant change

The Self Centre, Kempson Way, Suffolk Business Park, Bury St. Edmunds Suffolk IP32 7AR

and therefore adaptation becomes harder. In my view January is not a time to be eating lettuce leaves, in the Winter our bodies require sustaining, warming, nurturing foods so consider home-made soups, casseroles and fresh juices or smoothies. We can do with cutting back on the sugar after the Xmas overload and that alone will make a difference. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine and is a well proven cause of many of our lifestyle dis-eases. Even though we feel like curling up on the sofa all day in front of Netflix, we understand that movement is medicine for the body and mind. So a walk in the park, a spot of tidying in the garden a Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi or Qi Gong session will help keep the Lymph in your body moving and that is a major influential factor in keeping your immune system working effectively. Remember your Lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump so the only way to stimulate it is by deep abdominal breathing and movement! It was Tao

Porchin the 100-year-old yoga teacher who told one of our self centre teaching faculty that the answer to longevity was “simply turn the body upside down once a day”. That costs nothing! And lastly, practice the art of selfcare – gift yourself some time to do something that calms your mind and relaxes you – it could be reading, knitting, art, writing, meditation there are many ways that we can step off our mad hamster wheels and allow our bodies and minds to naturally recalibrate. We have a fabulous range of Winter Wellness Workshops coming up at THE SELF CENTRE including Yoga Detox , Gong Baths, Digestive system reset, Immune system boosting, Pilates Beginners, Menopause and Women’s Wellness Circles – visit www.the-self-centre.co.uk/ workshops/ to discover more.

Balanced Life the theme of a session was boxing which came with a food quiz that kept the brain active whilst doing the exercise. The sessions are always outdoors, ensuring even in the winter, you get a dose of fresh air in the week. Working out in the cold can really help boost immunity and fat burn and activation in the body.

Balanced Life was created more than 11 years ago. I began with planning workout sessions with a few of my office colleagues and I am now a Group Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer, and Pilates Teacher. When I started out, I thought that workouts were something you did to stay fit or lose a bit of weight, over the years my thinking has very much transformed. I once believed that your cards were set out early on, and there was little you could do to change that, but I have learnt that nothing is set in stone. Your lifestyle can very much impact your life, your longevity, the illnesses you may suffer, how you cope with them, your aches, pains, limitations, and flexibility. At Balanced Life, the philosophy is very much about having fun and doing things you enjoy. Workout sessions are planned with the clients in mind. At outdoor bootcamps, we can do serious exercise, with some fun along the way. Recently

Pilates sessions are relaxed and while we focus on building strength, coordination, balance and flexibility, we also work on breathing and relaxation. These tend to be inside a studio, where you are guaranteed to be dry and warmth… Chair-based exercise is something else in the portfolio. These sessions are for people that don’t feel strong enough or able to go into a gym or other fitness class or maybe have had surgery and need to build strength and mobility before getting back to their previous exercise. We spend most of the class in a chair, with some standing exercise for those that are able. There is very much a Pilates based theme to these classes.

meals, suggestions on how to tweak the things you currently consume, and ways in which you can increase healthier options into your diet. I am not about quick fixes, I like to say in my classes, “It is all about the Journey, not the Destination.” You may have a goal to work towards, I am happy to help get you there, but I want you to learn good habits for the rest of your life, not just that one occasion and have a little fun along the way. I believe life is all about Balance, which is how I came up with the name of my business. You should be able to eat, drink, and do the things you enjoy, while balancing that with foods and lifestyle that you know are going to improve your health and keep you moving and healthier for as along as possible. If you know me, you will often hear me talking about Sam, my Springer and the adventures we have out on our forest walks You will see me going

The one thing you don’t get with Balanced Life, is a diet plan. Everybody has different tastes, restrictions, and ways of eating and I would rather help to educate people on eating in a healthier way based on your diet, rather than my particular “fad”. What you do get is recipe options of healthier

for a quick or long dip on the sea, river or lake whenever I get a chance, all year round. Springtime is a given you will find me on a ski slope somewhere, until it is time to hit the Après and cheese! At weekends you will often find me in the kitchen cooking or out with friends, I like nothing more than a good meal, some lovely wine and great company! To enable to me to do all these things, I aim (although not always successfully), to workout 2-3 times a week, meditate daily and am trying to fit in a stretch/yoga session a couple of times a week. The more I do these things, the more it enables me to do the things I enjoy in life, and that is what I like to bring across through my classes and 1-1 sessions.

What people have said about my sessions: “Coming to Pilates with Sara improves my fitness in a different way to cardio. I enjoy the calmness of the class, knowing that it’s having a positive effect on my body and my mind.” KJ “I joined Sara’s bootcamp not long after I finished Uni, to meet new people and improve my fitness and absolutely love it! Perfect for all abilities and great chance to get outside, have a good chat and keep fit. Even on the days where I’m just not feeling it, I finish bootcamp and feel 100% better for it! Would recommend to anyone, any age, any fitness level!” LG “I was waiting for 2 hip replacements when I first met Sara and started her chair class. She kept me mobile and stopped my muscles from deteriorating. This made my recovery much easier. After my operations, Sara visited me privately to keep me exercising and help with rehabilitation. This speeded up my recovery and I resumed my classes. Sara is able to give advice on any aches and pains and give hints and exercises suited to you. I cannot emphasise enough how she has helped me over a period of 4 years.” MARY U

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman A big Hardwick welcome to 2024 and hope your Christmas and New Year was full of festive cheer and Santa brought you all you wished for. Looking back at the end of last term what an amazing and fantastic time was had, so much happening, so much excitement and so much enjoyment for the children, staff and families. From the Christmas Fair to Santa Run, and some of the most brilliant Christmas shows the school has seen, five tremendous performances enjoyed by packed houses. Then there was the trip that will live long in the memory as virtually the whole school, staff, teachers, support staff, governors, and volunteers visited the Theatre Royal for the pantomime Snow White, a unique experience and what a show! Huge thanks to our local Town and West Suffolk Councillors Sarah Stamp and Patrick Chung whose locality funding made the trip possible, the Friends of Hardwick (FoHPS) for making up the balance of the cost so the

adventure was totally free for families. In the next directory there will be a brilliant picture special of all the events but here we feature our

Latest news from LSS wishes everyone a Happy New Year! LSS welcomes anyone living with lymphoedema and/or lipoedema to the safe and supportive environment of our meetings. Many have said how our group has helped them to feel less isolated and more able to cope with their condition,

as it can be very useful to talk to people who have the same condition. It can also be reassuring and helpful as people can air their concerns and tend to feel a bit better when someone says “oh yes, that happens to me as well” – it means

they are not alone. Experiences, good and not so good, are shared if wanted and, as humour can play an important part of coping, laughter is shared too, along with tips, hints, a cuppa and the all important slice of cake.

LSS’s kicks of 2024 with our 8th January meeting which will include a floristry demonstration by our long time LSS supporter, Naomi. And, for our March 4th meeting, we will holding another of our coffee, cake and chat evenings.

Make 2024 the year you help support the community who need to use our wonderful NHS

Dates for your diary

Who are My WiSH? A new year always seems like a good opportunity for us to just explain, to those who don’t know, who My WiSH Charity are, and what we do.

Skydive - Saturday 15th June A skydive is on many people’s bucket list so make 2024 the year you tick this amazing challenge off. You can raise money for the area you are passionate about or help us support the whole Trust.

We are your local NHS charity, supporting the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. This includes West Suffolk Hospital and Newmarket Hospital as well as the community services provided in both health centres and peoples homes across Suffolk.

My WISH Charity Soapbox Challenge Saturday 31st August

We don’t provide the things the NHS provides but the enhancements, the cherry on the top of the cake to enhance the care of patients and also to support the amazing NHS staff who care for us all. This includes all ages and aspect of health care from the emergency department to the eye treatment unit, the cancer unit to the neonatal unit.

Have you ever watched our annual soapbox challenge and wanted to take part? Now’s the time as we open up the team slots for 2024. It’s £100 to enter a team and it’s the craziest day you will have all year!

Plus we will be launching a new event in early miss a chance to have lots of fun while suppor

Activity co-ordinator to enhance care Ward G4 mainly focuses on our elderly patients with many experiencing confusion and delirium during their stay. These patients need extra attention and some stimulation while in hospital and that’s our aim for 2024. We are currently fundraising for an Activity Co-ordinator for the ward. This role will enhance the patient experience by providing a staff member who is employed to specifically interact with patients to help engage them, lift their mood, and help avoid isolation, loneliness and lack of social interaction. This may seem crazy when the hospital ward is

so busy, but the nursing staff are so busy with their patient care that being able to sit with the patient and play a game is just impossible. Our activity co-ordinator will also be on hand to encourage social mealtimes and to interact with family and carers.

We think this is a fantastic addition to the ward which will make such a difference to patients, their loved ones and to the staff who we know will benefit from seeing their patients enjoying themselves with this new staff member.

in early 2024 so do follow us on social media so you don’t supporting your local hospital charity.

Craft Corner WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/ thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk

Michelle x

This months’ make is simple but effective and involves a nice nature walk to collect sticks, perfect to blow away the Christmas cobwebs. YOU WILL NEED: 4 sticks roughly the same size, some brown string or twine, scissors, glue gun, picked flowers for decoration and a nice picture to be framed.

Place the sticks of equal size in a square laying the top and bottom sticks on top of the side sticks. Tie twine around each corner neatly (use a glue gun first if helpful) Glue accessories around the frame to pretty it up Place around picture and secure in place with a glue gun.

TOP TIP… You could also use this technique to make a larger frame and hang lots of pictures along it on string with tiny pegs.

Girlguiding around Bury

2023 ended with a variety of activities for members of Girlguiding around Bury. 2nd Bury Guides helped out at Tesco’s food bank campaign, while a guide dog paid a visit to 2nd Bury Brownies.

District, a cinema trip in Thedwastre district and helping to decorate a church in Mildenhall.

The girls tried out negotiating everyday activities with a ‘sight impairment.’ They also held a danceathon to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

So much is planned for 2024 and more girls could become members if we had more units. Although we have some spaces for Rainbows, we really need more adult leaders to increase the number of places available for Brownies and Guides.

End of term celebrations included a carol service and Christingle making in Bury

BURY ST EDMUNDS

Cricket Club Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club look forward to the 2024 season and can reflect on a number of players who have developed their cricket at the club and go on to greater things. An example is Josh Davey who first learnt his cricket at South Lee School, practicing in the outdoor nets at the Victory Sports Ground under the supervision of the school’s sports staff. Josh’s sporting talent won him a scholarship to Culford School from where he also played for Bury St Edmunds in the East Anglian Premier League. His displays earned a call up for Suffolk and obvious cricket talent attracted Middlesex where he made his first class debut aged 19.

In 2013 aged 22 he moved to Somerset where his career progressed both with the county and Scotland having been born in Aberdeen. He produced some excellent displays in the 2015 World cup scoring 53 not out and taking 6.28 against Afghanistan. He has played for Scotland also in T 20 internationals and the 2021 T 20 World Cup. Josh played for Somerset in 2019 when

JANUARY 2024 | 51

they won the Royal London One Day Cup taking vital wickets in the final and a total of 14 in the competition. With junior cricket coaching taking place in 2024 we hope to find the next Josh Davey. In addition to Josh, Daniel Moriarty now of Yorkshire, Chris Benjamin ( Warwickshire) and Justin Broad (Northamptonshire) have all played for the club we wish them all well in 2024.

JANUARY’S LOOK AT PLASTIC

Happy new year to everyone and I hope you had a great Christmas. Usually, I give ideas to help your financial position in January but this year I thought we could have a change. As I sat with my family watching the grand opening of Christmas presents, I was struck by the number of plastic gifts and the continued excessive use of plastic packaging around them. When you think about it, plastic is probably the best thing that humans have ever invented (the material of a thousand uses) but paradoxically also the worst. The world has produced 8bn tonnes of plastic since the 1950s and none of it has disappeared unless we have burnt or recycled it. We are still speculating how long it takes plastic to completely break down, maybe 500 years, maybe 1,000 years no one knows. What we do know for sure is that plastic is polluting every part of our planet and virtually every organism on it including us. What can we do? Firstly we can reduce our usage, recycle more and reuse as much as possible, alternatively we can replace plastic with other materials.

Here’s a quick summary of plastic types:

Recyclable plastics Plastic is a valuable and finite resource and environmentally the optimum use for most plastic after its first use, is to be recycled – preferably into a product that can be recycled again. An added bonus is that recycling plastic into end applications that displace virgin plastics can save on average two tonnes of CO₂ for every tonne of plastic recycled. One drawback is that recycled plastic is generally not used to make the same items the next time around: old recycled plastic bottles don’t usually go to make new plastic bottles, but to make lowergrade items such as plastic benches and fence posts. Still beneficial but it also means that we still need some virgin plastic materials.

Bio-degradable plastics Bio-degradable sounds environmentally good, but with more knowledge I realised it does not necessarily mean that at all. The words photodegradable, oxydegradable or just biodegradable seen on plastic bags or packaging, means they contain additives that cause the plastic to decay more rapidly in the presence of light and oxygen. They may break down into smaller pieces more rapidly than other plastics but they still leave most of the plastic material and possibly other dangerous toxins such as cadmium, lead and beryllium as well. The upshot is that biodegradable plastic can actually have the opposite effect of what the name implies, we are more likely to use it and discard it into the environment thinking that it is not causing any harm.

Compostable plastics The theory behind compostable plastics is good and simple: why don’t we make plastics from more environmentally friendly products so that we can put them in a compost heap or industrial composter and they quickly break down into biomass, water, inorganic compounds and CO₂ leaving no toxic residue. They are then fit to spread on our land to enrich the soil. To be truly compostable the plastic must break down at the same rate as known compostable materials such as wood, leaves or paper within three to six months of disposal. Many plastics are now made from natural materials such as corn starch, potato, tapioca, cellulose, soy protein and lactic acid. Some of them even look virtually indistinguishable from traditional petrochemical plastics. In reality, dependent on the size and thickness of compostable plastics they may require breaking down in industrial composters and even after that may leave a residue that reduces the value of any compost produced. Aah why does there always have to be a down side!

If this has sparked your interest you can find more information about plastics on the Ecofrenzy website under Blogs Recyclable, compostable, biodegradable plastics – what does it all mean? Happy reading.

Christ Church MORETON HALL

Facing your Fears Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church I recently enjoyed the Sunday service about Parish Nursing. Not just because my mum, Lesley is the Parish Nurse, but because Lizzie, who often explains parts of the Bible I find hard to understand, discussed ‘Facing our Fears’. In Lizzie’s talk she explained that she was given some great advice when starting out with her sermons. Lizzie had said she was fearful and had been told that she should face her fears. What does this mean? Many of us often go about our lives staying in our ‘comfort zone’ so we don’t have to face our fears. Fear often means we care about what is about to happen, we may not want to let anyone down including ourselves. But the experiences we go through if we face our fears can be life changing. The mind can be very powerful, but we can harness our thoughts to over-ride our fears. When I decided to keep swimming outside in the winter, I knew my mind would be giving me lots of reasons not to get in the

water, but actually going through the experience every week makes me believe in myself and what my body can manage. Jesus had many times in which he would have ‘faced his fears’ not least knowing that his life would be given up to save us. I am sure you can think of moments in your life when you have had a choice to do something new but because you where not sure what the outcome would be you may not have gone through with it. You may think that the

54 | JANUARY 2024

Church can’t help you solve your problems, but very often the sermons we have deliver a message to help us navigate our lives in a way we had not imagined possible before. January is often the month we set ourselves resolutions could 2024 be the year you Face your Fears? I would love to know what you have done to face your fears, so do email me on sam@yourfitness.net and maybe we could encourage more people to feel anything is possible. Happy New Year!

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Live like a miser!

In the 19th century, there was an old man called Monsieur Guizon who lived in the south of France. He was a Christian, but spent all his time making money.

volunteer. I held back because I was frightened by the idea of meeting homeless people. And night-shifts seemed way too costly.

However, he didn’t spend it unless he had to. Needless to say, Monsieur Guizon had plenty of critics but not many friends. But one day he died and news about his will spread throughout the town. In it, he’d written this: ‘From the time I was a child, I have noticed that the poor in Marseilles have great difficulty in getting clean water. Therefore, when I was young, I promised God that I would live for one purpose only; to save every bit of money that I ever received so that I could leave it to the city, so that the poor could have clear drinking water.’ Consequently, between 1837 and 1842 a canal was built. It was 100kms long and it soon brought fresh water into the poorest parts of Marseilles. Monsieur Guizon inspires me. He lived his life purposefully.

He wasn’t a people-pleaser and he didn’t virtue-signal. If we’re honest, most of us live to please ourselves. But the irony is, that a comfortable life can make you feel uncomfortable. When I was living near Great Yarmouth, some people in our church were disturbed by the number of rough sleepers that they saw in the town and so they joined other churches in starting a night-shelter called The Living Room. Initially, I didn’t

But eventually my conscience got me on the rota. And during those years, I had numerous conversations with our ‘visitors’. I was moved by their turbulent life-stories, amazed by their honesty and humbled by their gratitude. When my shift finished at 6am, I always left feeling fulfilled. My McDonald’s breakfast never tasted so good. I felt that I was finally living the life that I really wanted to live; But a life that also pleased God. However, I also learned that serving others is more fulfilling than living to please yourself. Twenty-twenty four is here. The new year stretches before us in our shiny new diaries. How are we going to use the next twelve months? We could be miserly with our time. Or we could live like the miser of Marseilles. Rev Mike Simm Minister of Southgate Church

THE 19TH HOLE BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH CULFORD SCHOOL Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching Happy New Year to you all! It’s at this time of year that everyone makes a new year’s resolution or two, us golfers are never any different. However, if your resolutions have been made then make sure you have given yourself an achievable goal for the forthcoming golf season. One tip I will give you for these resolutions is to write them down, and either put them on display somewhere or tell someone about it so they can keep you on track.

COACHES CORNER – DRIVE IT BETTER THIS YEAR! There is one thing for certain in golf, that is that good strikes alongside good technique produces a higher percentage of quality shots. Unfortunately, many of us golfers don’t make high-quality contact as often as we should. SET UP The driver set up compared to other clubs throughout your bag is very different and you should take time to put these highlighted areas in place to assist you maximizing the potential of this club. Ball position should be just inside your lead foot (left foot for right handed golfer) Feet a fraction wider than shoulder width, this will add stability throughout the swing produced by the driver. Your spine should be tilted back away from the target, as you can see from the image this places the right shoulder significantly lower than the left. STRIKE As you can see the tilted spine angle at address now promotes the necessary body angle to help us achieve an ascending (upward) strike through impact. The golf club head, hands and left shoulder

almost make a straight line at impact, this position allows us to achieve a consistent impact with the golf ball and again insures that you are impacting the ball with an ascending strike. As stated before its this good impact with the ball that we are trying to achieve so that there can be the best transfer of energy from driver into the golf ball, resulting in greater distance from the shot So with an ascending strike being desirable through impact, below is a drill that you can use in practice to help you achieve this. PRACTICE DRILL All you will need is an empty golf ball box (sleeve) and two tee pegs to use this drill. Place an empty sleeve box between a teed golf ball and the target as indicated. The box should be approximately a grip length ahead of the ball. On a windy day it might be necessary to use tees to anchor the box in place. If you can hit shots without the club head striking the box, then chances are that you’re no longer hitting down on the ball and you should see an increase in both distance and height of your tee shots. Keep in mind that if you’re now doing this drill well and you have an adjustable driver, you might need to alter the loft. Credit: Andrew Rice, this drill was shown to me by Andrew at a

seminar I attended and you can find this and more information at www.andrewricegolf.com. SPEED Speed is needed with this club. So when you are feeling more comfortable with the set up and strike you should practice swinging driver FASTER! I was always told growing up not to swing fast, now that’s all the top performers do. So why not train yourself to swing a little faster its simple… during a practice session set aside 4 shots where you focus on SPEED and NOT result. I am currently training this aspect… Its strange to start with but if it puts you one club closer to the hole then it should improve 2024’s scoring.
