Welcome to the February issue It’s February… at last! We certainly saw all of the weather variants in January didn’t we? Storm after storm (actually, was that my wheelie bin I just saw fly past my window?) Anyhow, on to February and we’re edging closer to Spring. Valentine’s day is on the 14th. If you’re thinking of entertaining at home, we have a delicious beef noodle stew recipe on page 40 that’s perfect for a special meal. Or if you’re thinking of eating out, Orissa is always great for a romantic night out. And if you’d like to experience something new, why not try Jesse’s Kitchen? An Afro-Caribbean one stop shop. The shop offers groceries, batch cooking and a takeout service on Friday’s. Find out more on page 63. Are you thinking about a career change or looking to up-skill? Take a look at page 5 where you’ll find information about The University and Professional Development Centre in Bury St Edmunds. As part of the Eastern Education Group, alongside West Suffolk College, Abbeygate Sixth Form College and One Sixth Form College, they offer a wide range of leisure, part-time and full-time courses to suit all ages and abilities.

We look back at the fabulous festive fun and many memorable experiences had at the Community Centre at the end of 2023, The Family Christmas Disco and Wreath Making Workshop, supported by Suffolk County Council. The hugely popular annual

Southgate’s Got Christmas organised by Southgate Church, and the Charity Fair for Marie Curie Care and Support Through Terminal Illness. Thanks to all of you who supported our Multi Community Food Bank and Winter Hardship Initiative. Many food items were donated and

the Southgate Community Partnership and Southgate Church each gave £200 for fresh produce, with Eric’s Prime Cuts Butchers generously contributing, so we were able to distribute £460 worth of meat vouchers to families in need within our community.

A monthly muse on all thing’s health & wellbeing with Carole Baker, Founder of the self centre

Valentine - All things pertaining to the heart & love? “Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.” Rumi

Originally celebrating the martyrdom of Saint Valentine, the association with love and romance is quite modern. Like most festivals now, in my view, it’s just an excuse to encourage us to spend money on “stuff”. The Heart has always been associated with love and in native medicine it is the 4th major energy centre of the body and is related to unconditional love – for all beings and the earth and for yourself. It’s amazing how many words we use that are linked to the heart: broken-hearted, cold-hearted, kind-hearted etc. It is believed that the more we practice the art of unconditional love the more the energy of our heart expands and this can now be shown clearly with modern technology. Visit www.heartmath.org which since 1991 has developed reliable, scientifically validated tools that help people reduce and avoid stress while experiencing increased peace, satisfaction, and self-security. Research at the HeartMath Institute shows that, adding

The Self Centre, Kempson Way, Suffolk Business Park, Bury St. Edmunds Suffolk IP32 7AR

heart awareness to our daily activities and connections produces measurable benefits to our own and others’ wellbeing. There are many things we can do that are great to support a heart that is out of balance, examples being: Heartburn • Ginger, fennel, dandelion, chamomile and peppermint all help bring relief • Pressing an acupuncture point (pericardium point 6) on your wrist may help to relieve your heartburn. High Blood Pressure • Mr Hofel from Woolpit was the first man to get garlic into a pill form so the benefits are not destroyed by stomach acid – garlic has been used for years to lower HBP. • Drink Hibiscus tea – cultures across the world use Hibiscus tea to control HBP as it acts like an ACE inhibitor. • Yoga - Using Savasana pose for a group of 47 Hypertensive patients whose average age was 46. Average Blood Pressure was 186/115 – the mean being 134.

Tel: 01284 769090 www.the-self-centre.co.uk Follow us on

After 3 weeks of practicing breathing techniques the subjects showed a change in mean blood pressure from 134 to 107 and drug requirements decreased by an average of 68%. • Tai Chi Researchers found that older people who regularly performed the traditional Chinese “mind and body” technique were less likely to suffer high blood pressure and were physically stronger. • Meditation - plays a role in reducing your risk of heart disease, according to a scientific statement published in the Sept. 28, 2017, Journal of the American Heart Association. We have a fabulous range of Yoga, Meditation and Tai Chi classes in warm, bespoke studios with all the equipment you need and the best teachers in the area. Take time to look after your heart this month – visit www.the-self-centre.co.uk/classes to discover more.

LATEST NEWS Compiegne Way and flooding

This is still a major problem and issue for Moreton Hall both residents and surrounding areas, as this is a busy traffic route and an identified Suffolk County Council HGV route, this should be maintained periodically. Suffolk Police

Please report any anti-social behaviour including boy racers on their website. www.suffolk.police.uk. Litter Bins/Dog Waste Bins

A request has been raised for Litter/Dog Waste bins on Suffolk Business Park and Skyliner Way out towards Rougham but highly unlikely.

‘Grow Your Dough’ to help us enhance care This month sees My WiSH Charity launch a new fundraising challenge, with the aim to raise funds for an activity assistant for elderly patients, many of whom have dementia. Teams will receive a £50 starter donation and are encouraged to ‘run wild’ with fundraising ideas over three months to claim the title of ‘Grow Your Dough Champions’. This initiative would not have been possible without the support of event sponsors Knights Lowe, Suffolk-based chartered accountants and business advisors. Fundraising officer and event organiser, Tanya Fifield, said: “We are excited to run this event

Tanya added: “£50 could go towards ingredients for a bake sale, or an entry fee for a half marathon, the choice is yours. We want those taking part to enjoy the challenge with their friends or colleagues. where people can get creative and have fun while supporting their local NHS charity.” Grow Your Dough will run from 1st April to 30th June and entry is free. Teams can be businesses, family and friends or it can be an individual challenge. There will be four trophies up for grabs: Most dough raised, Community engagement, Most creative fundraising and Most dedicated team.

“Our supporter Arthur Clarke will be entering the event with his friends and on the other hand, we have Treatt, one of our corporate partners, entering a team. This is why we have the different trophy categories, we want to reward innovation as well as those who raise the best amount.” Tanya extended her thanks to Knights Lowe for sponsoring the

seeing all the innovative ideas as businesses around the community come together for this incredible cause. A number of our staff here at Knights Lowe have seen first-hand the incredible work My WiSH carry out and we are really proud to be supporting them.” The money raised will allow the charity to provide an activity assistant for ward G4.

Ward manager, Rosie Cawston, said: “This role will have a huge impact on our patients, especially those with dementia. Whether it’s playing cards, getting the bay to play bingo, or just sitting and having a chat will be such a valuable asset to the ward. We know this kind of interaction is vital to our older patients to help maintain their cognitive skills while in hospital.”

Need more from your existing solar installation? If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours. A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it. If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage. Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Latest news from Cupid’s arrow lets loose in February, bringing an extra spring to romance and all things heart shaped. Those living with chronic lifelong conditions, such as Lymphoedema and Lipodema, can find that taking care of themselves is

also heart shaped and does reap positive benefits to their health and well being. Whether its grabbing a quiet moment with a cuppa,

enjoying a hobby or time spending with family and friends, it gladdens the heart and brings us lasting brighter moments to savour.

LSS kicked off it’s 2024 meetings with Naomi Wells demonstrating using eco friendly alternative to oasis when flower arranging. Naomi also advised which plants are poisonous to touch and also not to put daffodils in the same water as other flowers as they give off a chemical which wilts, or can kill them. Naomi’s four beautiful arrangements were raffled off, so four lucky LSS members got to take the floral displays home with them.

2024 LSS MEETINGS 6th March – Coffee and Chat evening. 5th June, 7th August, 2nd October and 4th December

7pm – 9pm in Room 1 at Moreton Hall Community Centre. There is no joining fee or referral needed, do come along and find out more about living with, and managing, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema in a relaxed and friendly setting, along with a cuppa and biscuit.

Repetitive motion can activate the parasympathetic nervous

system which quietens the ‘fight & flight’ response giving a sense of peace and happiness. Crafting gives you something to do, gives new meaning, is fun, is immensely satisfying, requires concentration, attention to detail and handeye coordination. You can craft in your own time and focus on what you can do and not what you can’t. Creativity is a powerful thing and is accessible. Exercising several parts of the brain by expressing yourself, taking negative thoughts and replacing them with positive thoughts and boosting your cognitive skills. Silence your internal critic, choose a craft to

suit you or try something new. Either way you will feel a little more like your old self. Ideas can be turned into something real and tangible being a healthy, positive thing to do. – BURY WATER MEADOWS GROUP –

It’s quite possible pilgrims coming to Bury to worship, would have looked across from what is now the intersection of the A14 at Sainsbury and seen the magnificent Benedictine Abbey, 3 times the height of our present cathedral tower, standing proud over the fledgling town rising round it’s two pristine chalk streams. There was certainly concern and support from environmental and preservation charities in Suffolk, but any campaign also needed Bury St Edmunds’ residents to come together to lobby councillors; there were only 13 months until the Local Plan came into being. This Plan was St Edmundsbury (now West Suffolk) Council’s proposal for the development of our town over the next 10 years and included a hotel with associated parking and lighting to be built on this field,

©Ian Hulland Photography

Bury Water Meadows Group held its 10th birthday party at the end of last year. Well we thought we were 10, until it was pointed out that our first meeting to seek help to protect the arable field called Leg of Mutton, took place late 2012. This field had had uninterrupted views of the water meadows for thousands of years.

along with proposals for houses; government policy to alleviate the housing shortage. But this ancient open space was at stake and this was a development too far. In the early heady years, there was even talk of raising capital to buy the piece of land. After our victory with the Government’s Planning Inspector when he ruled that this piece of land was to be used for informal recreation only, we went on to form a Group and then became a charity in 2019. We have had lots of successes, our restoration of the scrape as a wetland habitat in Ram Meadow and our latest project, collaborating with Suffolk Wildlife Trust to restore Police Station ditch into a backwater for creatures like the water vole are just two. However the Local Plan is still with us and the battle is not quite over! As you may have read in the press, West Suffolk Council’s Local Plan

will be going out for a third and final round of consultations from Tuesday 30 January to Tuesday 12 March. We understand this will be a public consultation. It will be important for those who believe we need open space, fit for wildlife of the future in our rapidly growing town, to tell the Council to go further with the many positive and ambitious environmental policies contained in the current draft. We would be keen to see the Council being even more ambitious. For example, requiring developers to deliver more than a minimum net-gain for biodiversity, when they carry out their projects to build houses and businesses much needed in the town. Our wildlife is in trouble, we are the most Nature depleted country in Europe and Nature needs a home too. Tell your Council it matters to you!

This months’ make is all about Valentine hearts. YOU WILL NEED: An old pencil (or stick) some paint or washi tape to decorate it, sellotape, small amount of 16 gauge craft wire 30cm long (or pipe cleaners twisted together) wire cutters and round nose pliers. Assorted beads optional. Tape around the pencil or stick with washi tape or paint it a nice bright colour. Let it dry. Draw a heart on a piece of newspaper with a felt tip pen about the size of your hand. Leaving 8cm spare start bending the wire into the shape of the heart. Twist the 8cm spare wire around top of the stick or pencil and twist the other end of the heart so the wire so the shape is sealed. Glue a bead on the top of the pencil to decorate. Now to make the bubble mixture… 300ml of water with 50ml of washing up liquid Slowly add the water to the washing up liquid and gently stir to combine, a chopstick is perfect for this! Let the bubble mixture rest before using (maybe an hour).

TOP TIP… Try making different shaped bubble wands and see how it effects the bubbles made. Add food colouring to turn the bubbles a colour.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum New Museum Year - 2024 The New Year brings both reflections of last year and our thoughts for the new 2024 season. Firstly, a very big thank you to the members of the RAF Lakenheath/Mildenhall USAAF Honour Guard and Padre Hanson who led the service and the wreath laying.

always a pleasure seeing you all here. Thank you again and we hope for a repeat turnout next year (Sunday 8th December 2024) all are welcome.”

From the Chair, Graham Sage “May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended “December Departure” on 10th December. Special thanks go to Mike Warner for arranging the USAF Colour Party from RAF Mildenhall, presided over by Chaplin Hanson who took the service. The weather was good until the event was over so the 60+ visitors and guests stayed dry until the Buffet got going. Many thanks go to the members of the GI 41/45 reenactor group for their very smart turnout,

From the GI 41-45 WW2 Reenactors “Today we attended our last event of the year ‘December Departure’ ‘ at Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum. It’s always an honour for us to attend memorial events and pay our respects to those who gave so much. See you all next year.” Secondly, from the 94th Bomb Group Forum, Frank Allen posts from the USA: We have produced a film called Ramblings of a Bomber Pilot to

honour my uncle’s life. He was a WWII Bomber Pilot based in Bury-St. Edmunds (Rougham) in 1943. We are trying to find family members of his crew to share our film with them. He was in 94th BG, 332nd BS. My uncle’s name is Arthur H. Allen, Jr. Thanks so much.

Thirdly, again via social media congratulations to a Rougham Veteran. Harry Ram wrote: “Please join me in wishing my Dad, and hero, Walter Ram, a Happy 100th Birthday today! Happy Birthday Dad! MSGT Walter Ram, “Helno-gal” B-17 crew member, 8th Air Force, 94th BG, 331st BS, former POW (Stalag 17b). 100 years young today! Sharp as a tack. Still active and volunteering his time at the Pima Air and Space Museum, 390th BG Memorial Hangar, sharing his stories as a part of living history. We love you Dad! See you at 101!”

Finally, we look forward to 2024. We open on Easter Sunday which will soon be here, March 30th. Please also remember - We Need You in 2024!! Thanks again Graham and all the team, without you all we wouldn’t have a museum.

FEBRUARY’S LOOK AT HOME GRANTS

This month I thought it would be a good idea to look at household grants. The idea came after a meeting with Jessica Smith from West Suffolk Council who has the interesting job of Environmental Management Officer. Her role is to promote and help us to apply for all the grants below. She has given me a list of grants, some other useful contacts as well as her own details. I hope the information helps many of you save some money and increases the green credentials of your home. Good luck

Domestic energy efficiency support and information Warm Homes Suffolk is an initiative set up by councils in Suffolk to help residents live in homes that cost less to heat, so they can reduce their energy usage and enjoy lower bills. Eligibility: household income below £31,000 per year and property energy performance certificate rating D or below. www.warmhomessuffolk.org Cost of living - the rising cost of living pressures can affect any one at any time. If you, or someone you know in West Suffolk are struggling financially at this time, there is support and advice out there that can help. www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/cost-of-living The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched in spring 2022, providing upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps, and in some cases biomass boilers, in homes. Acting on behalf of property owners, installers can apply for: £7,500 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump and ground source heat pump, including water source heat pumps, and £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler. www.ofgem.gov.uk/ environmental-and-social-schemes/ boiler-upgrade-scheme-bus

Solar Together is a group buying scheme to get solar panels for your home at a competitive price. The scheme helps homeowners feel confident that they are paying the right price for a high-quality installation from preapproved installers, whilst increasing their independence from the grid and reducing their carbon emissions. www.suffolk.gov.uk/planningwaste-and-environment/initiatives/ solar-together-suffolk/

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires some electricity suppliers to pay smallscale generators for low-carbon electricity which they export back to the National Grid, providing certain criteria are met. The scheme is for anyone with an installation of Solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, micro combined heat and power, hydro and anaerobic digestion with up to a capacity of 5MW or up to 50kW for microCHP. www.ofgem.gov.uk/environmentaland-social-schemes/smart-exportguarantee-seg Suffolk Greener Homes interest free loans can be up to £5,000 at 0% APR to help homes cut their energy use. Loans are available for energy saving measures and are only available for the installation of approved materials and technologies by accredited installers: biomass boiler, electric vehicles and charging points, double glazing and more. Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government energy efficiency scheme that’s designed to deliver improvements to the least energy-efficient homes to tackle fuel poverty and help reduce energy bills. It was launched September 2023 and will run until March 2026. The £1 billion scheme will be available to low-income households with an EPC of D or below and in the lower Council Tax bands (A-D).

Christ Church MORETON HALL

Thank You

Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church

How many of us like watching Dragons Den especially when we can see the gaping errors in the presentation or the product they wish to sell? Very often we find it much easier to see the mistakes other people make and rarely consider the way we conduct ourselves. I have had an excellent teacher when it comes to showing the way to treat others (This is before my knowledge of Jesus and the bibles teaching). My mum is always and has always taken time to write to people and thank them for their services. I have tried to do the same with my children but very often they argue that it’s not worth it. I recently received a message from someone in church thanking me for stepping up to help lead some services. It really took me back and reminded me that actually saying thank you goes a long way.

Jesus gave thanks by saying grace before a meal. The most well known of these is ‘The feeding of the five thousand’, Jesus thanked God for five loaves and two fish. Very often I am reminded that it is the simple things that make such a difference in all our lives. At the opening of a Service I read a prayer which has stayed with me at the beginning of this new year. ‘Loving God, when I’m feeling lost or lonely or afraid or uncertain of the way ahead, be my guide, a lamp to my feet and a light for my path, and today help me to be a good companion to those I meet.’

I love the way this message has helped me to smile at someone I don’t know or open a door to let someone get their pushchair through. I try to think about why someone may not wish to reciprocate and remember that none of us know what others are managing with on a day to day basis. I pray that we all take the time to say ‘Thank You’ to lift someone’s spirit and let them know that whatever people are doing however small it maybe they are appreciated.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office It’s hard to believe that ITV’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office isn’t just a true story. But it’s one still being played out. The horrendous injustice suffered by hundreds of sub-postmasters caught up in this scandal, has been described as the biggest miscarriage of justice in British legal history, with enormous human cost. Horizon, the computer system rolled out to each post office, incorrectly showed huge account shortfalls. These were then blamed on sub-postmasters, who were told that nobody else had had any issues, that they were the only one. Except they weren’t – and the Post Office knew this. How frightening to believe that, facing a sudden debt of thousands of pounds and the possibility of bankruptcy or prison, you were utterly alone. Alan Bates emerges from this story as a heroic

figure. An unassuming but tenacious man, he led the fight against the Post Office for over 20 years, as David against a seemingly all-powerful corporate Goliath. Unwilling to stand by and watch others endure injustice, he stood up for, and stood by, those who had no fight left in themselves. To show them they were not alone. The outcry against the Post Office is welcome. We all – individually and collectively – cry out for justice. We want to live in a society where justice is done.

As Christians, this should be close to our hearts. The Lord is a God of justice. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne (Psalm 89:14). And Christ stands by those who suffer. He doesn’t look on from a distance, but as one who, at the cross, has experienced it himself. It’s through his people, reflecting his character and his priorities, that he reveals this. We may never have to battle like Alan Bates and the sub-postmasters. But, each of us will, in some way, be called to be a mouthpiece for truth and justice in our workplaces, homes, or community. In doing so, we show what God is like. And we show those facing unfairness and injustice that they’re not alone. We are there with them. God is there with them. With thanks to Jules Gadsby

THE 19TH HOLE BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH CULFORD SCHOOL Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching We have reached February already & for most of us golfers the winter can’t end soon enough. January brought some really cold days and wet weather which wasn’t great for those of us that wanted to get out & play. We are all on count down for better weather, so let’s hope this short month passes quickly. That being said there is still work that can be done and I hope everyone who set some goals at the start of the year is doing well with them.

COACHES CORNER – PITCH IT CLOSE If you watch the best players in the world week in week out, you will see just how good these players are from inside of 100 yards. This month’s coaches corner will show you some great ideas to improve your pitching technique from these key distances, it will allow you to either make use of those great drives or rescue a par where before you might have made a big number. Set up is key and this simple set up will allow you to achieve more consistent and forgiving strikes while playing these scoring shots. The image and descriptions here will show you key areas to focus on. The ball position, this should be centered to just forward to allow for a swallower impact. This swallower approach into impact will allow you a greater margin for error. Check Point, a great check point is to have the grip end of the club pointing towards to the first belt to the target side of your zipper.

C s

M F C O J F C

Pressure, hold your pressure on your lead (60/40) foot to help achieve a better strike through impact.

TIP: I always try and get people to feel that into the backswing and into the follow through that the hands stay in front of the chest while swing (set up position moving as a unit). There will be small changes from the above address positions (small amounts of wrist movement/set at longer distances).

KEEP THE SWING SIMPLE – PITCH IT CLOSER If you are struggling with this or any other aspect of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this great game more.

Key Positions, these are that the shoulders should be as level as possible (will never be completely level as one hand is lower than the other of the grip). Also the arms hanging straight so that this triangle shape made by the arms and shoulders can be held throughout the swing.

From this set up position, you can now move the club throughout the swing using a rocking action, ensuring that the club and body are moving together.
