Welcome to the December issue It’s beginning to look a lot like... Christmas! I know we’ve known about it ALL year, but it feels like it’s really crept up on us this year! There’s so much going on in and around Bury St Edmunds this December. Throughout the magazine, you’ll find there really is something for everyone. From carol concerts to disco’s, a brand new Disney film; Wish, and of course the legendary panto at Theatre Royal. Southgate Community Centre are hosting a Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday 9th December, 10.30am-4pm – the perfect chance to pick up some special gifts. We have a couple of Christmas recipes to try out if you’re entertaining. A cranberry, maple & pecan pudding which makes a great alternative to a traditional Christmas pudding on page 12 and a delicious mulled pear and cranberry punch on page 40. December can be a super busy month, so to help with organisation, we’ve included a handy calendar on page 63 where you can jot down all those important dates. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers, advertisers, contributors, delivery teams, and printers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. We’ll see you in 2024!

Cranberry, maple & pecan pudding Dairy-free, wheat-free and gluten-free - this Christmas pudding is moist and has a real zing. A less rich, more refreshing way to round off Christmas dinner

12 | DECEMBER 2023

Ingredients:

Method:

FOR THE PUDDING 100g each semi-dried prunes and date, stoned and chopped 100g each raisins and sultanas 100g pack dried cranberry 170g gluten-free flour 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder 100g pack pecan, roughly chopped 2 tsp mixed spice grated zest and juice of 2 oranges 100g dark muscovado sugar 5 tbsp maple syrup 2 eggs, beaten 100ml sunflower oiloil, for greasing FOR THE TOPPING 100g fresh cranberry 5 tbsp maple syrup

Put all the ingredients for the pudding into a big bowl and stir together until well mixed. Don’t be put off by the consistency of the mixture – it is quite wet. Lightly oil a 1.5 litre pudding basin. Tip the mixture into this and press down. Make a cover for the pudding basin using a double layer each of oiled greaseproof paper and aluminium foil. Make a pleat in the middle of these sheets to allow for expansion of the pudding. Press it over the top of the pudding basin and secure it well with a double piece of string. Use a little extra string to make a handle for ease of lifting in and out of the boiling water. Cook the pudding in a large pan with a well-fitting lid. There should be enough boiling water to come two-thirds up the sides of the basin at all times – so keep an eye on it. Cook the pudding for 3 hrs. To make the topping, cook the cranberries in the maple syrup until they burst open and become syrupy. Once the pudding is cooked, remove the cover and carefully tip it onto a large serving plate. Spoon the hot cranberry and maple syrup over the top and serve straight away.

The topic of ‘Attention’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s been the basis for a campaign for 2023 focusing on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, bringing you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well. Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. We’ve highlighted a new topic every month with information on how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money. Jon Neal, Chief Executive, Suffolk Mind

The right kind of attention

Home-Start in Suffolk

We all need to give and receive attention to stay mentally healthy. Too much is bad for us, as is too little. If we are socially isolated, we will suffer from attention deprivation, loneliness, stress and worry. If we receive too much attention we may find it overwhelming and struggle to meet the need for privacy. Giving and receiving attention is part of building and nurturing relationships. Spending time thinking about others and offering your time to them can make a big difference. You may have heard of random acts of kindness, in which people go out of their way to help others, from sharing a smile to helping with shopping.

“I decided to become a Home-Start in Suffolk volunteer because I really want to give the best support I can to Suffolk Families. I have experienced anxiety and depression myself and, as a mum, I know it can be really hard and challenging. Even though being a parent is the most rewarding thing ever, it can be tough and sometimes you want someone to speak to and Home-Start volunteers are there to offer that support. I really enjoy volunteering - I have met some lovely families and fellow volunteers and it really is great being part of the team. Knowing that you can be there for someone and make such a difference by simply offering that support is so rewarding.” Ines, Home-Start volunteer

Reach out to someone at Christmas

#suffolksaysbekind This December, our #suffolksaysbekind campaign calls on everyone to do something nice for others. Helping others can also have huge benefits for your own mental health and wellbeing. Here are some suggestions: l Not spoken to family for a while? Pick up the phone for a catch up. l If you have older neighbours, check to see if they’re ok, especially during the cold weather. Offering to do something practical like putting the bin out can help, as can popping in for a chat. l Ever considered volunteering? You could put your skills to good use and help someone else, offering as much time as you’re able to commit. l Make a cup of tea for your colleagues. l Say thank you to someone to show your appreciation for what they do. l Smile and say hello to people you may pass every day, but have never spoken to.

Where can I find out more?

Call Samaritans for free: 116 123 Text ‘Shout’: 85258 Email: jo@samaritans.org www.samaritans.org

Christmas and the run up to the festive season can be a difficult time for many. For those who are struggling with day-to-day life, this time of year can be overwhelming. Many people experience loneliness if they are alone over Christmas, and it can be particularly expensive with the regular demands of the season plus cost of living such as food and fuel. It’s important to reach out to friends, family and neighbours to make sure they’re not alone this December. You can play your part with our #suffolksaysbekind campaign by doing just that – reaching out for that call or conversation that could support someone this Christmas. If you are struggling, remember that help is available and you are never alone.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor & FoHPS Chairman Can you believe it is December and we are nearly a third of the way through the School year? As you are aware we have faced quite a few challenges this last month with crazy wet weather impacting on the functioning of the School. We managed to remain open, ensure the safety of the staff who do not live near school and all pulled together in the well-known Hardwick way to ensure that everyone stayed safe. We are as always incredibly proud of our children and how they adjusted to the slight changes. Fantastic work team Hardwick. As always school life is hugely busy, just a few highlights are: Thanks to everyone that supported the Book Fair, with proceeds from books sold we were able to choose some new exciting books for our library. We learned about kindness and empathy and the positive impact on our physical and mental health with the online Kindness Workshop from the charity 52 Lives. Children in Need was celebrated with a surprise visit from Pudsey and our wacky outfits day raised £227.50. Finally our congratulations to our Year 4 pupils who went on their first residential for three

days to Burwell House in Cambridgeshire. They had an amazing time being outdoors and in the Green Room making a film and as you can see from the montage this was an amazing opportunity and we are incredibly proud of the children for their behaviour and getting involved in all the

activities. Special thanks to Mr Shore, Miss Wellar-Poley and Miss Eley who supported the children and enabled the opportunity to happen, as well as the FoHPS for funding the coach to make the activity more affordable. Lots of rest and sleep for children and adults on their return!

On behalf of the staff, governors and the whole Hardwick family we wish all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year! 30 | DECEMBER 2023

Latest news from LSS sends festive greetings to one & all We find ourselves in December and with 2023 almost nearing its end. December is a festive and giving month and, along with spending time with family, friends and loved ones, do please bare a thought for those who maybe alone or as

not as able to join in with festivities. Life is not always about grand or big gestures and a “hello”, a smile, a thank you, along with friendship and offers of support, can often help to brighten what can be not so bright times for others.

LSS wishes all its members, kind supporters, Directory readers, Gemma at the Directory, and Katie, Centre Manager, at Moreton Hall Community Centre, a very happy Christmas and with all good wishes for healthy and prosperous 2024.

NEXT LSS MEETING Our January 8th meeting sees Naomi, a great supporter of LSS, giving us a floristry demonstration. A colourful way to start the New Year off and also to pick up tips on flower arranging too!

7pm – 9pm in Room 1 at Moreton Hall Community Centre. There is no joining fee or referral needed, do come along and find out more about living with, and managing, Lymphoedema and Lipoedema in a relaxed and friendly setting, along with a cuppa and biscuit.

A little kindness, goes a long way If you open a window on an advent calendar each day you will find a little surprise hiding behind it. Why not treat yourself each day in a similar way by making up your own ideas and sharing them with others. Bring people together and look forward to these

moments of joy and pleasure. A little kindness at the right time goes a long way. Life can be wonderful and devastating too. Why do we constantly feel the need to explain ourselves, always having to apologise for something or

other. We are not here to be judged only accepted as we are. Each day focus and find a purpose, your happy place and some solace in it. You have the skills and the ability to shine so why not embrace them.

Positively Crafty November’s craft was stencil and pasting, a new activity that tested the best of us. Various designs and colour mixes were attempted, as you can see here. There are times when we cannot even begin to imagine what others are going through. Kindness and compassion restore faith and laughter releases tension. As someone once said ‘We are all of us stars and deserve to twinkle’ CPSG would like to say one big thank you to you the reader, all the speakers who presented throughout the year, Southgate Community Centre for accommodating us and the Directory Team for publishing our articles. More importantly our members for their investment and support. Wishing you all a very enjoyable festive period. Stay safe, try to be positive and take good care. If you would like to see what we are about you are more than welcome to pop into one of the meetings and join in to see if it is for you.

DIARY DATES Positively Crafty Thursday 7th December from 1.30pm-4pm at Southgate Community Centre Coffee Morning Monday 11th December from 10.30am at The Folk Café.

an amazing year… Wow, how is it December already? We don’t know about you, but it feels like the year has flown by. It’s been a great one though and we have had some amazing things happen. 2023 has certainly been about gardens with the opening of the Queens Platinum Jubilee Garden in the Newmarket Community Hospital, a refurbishment of the gardens surrounding the Macmillan unit and the grand opening of our Butterfly Garden for end-of-life patients and

their loved ones. The help we have received for these projects has been amazing and there are too many people to thank but we are so grateful for all the love and passion they have put into these gardens. These outside areas will make such a difference to so many people.

Event wise, we have had a skydive with 11 people taking to the skies, including 10 from our stroke unit and we celebrated the NHS’ 75th birthday with lots of NHS Big Teas. We also held our fourth, and most successful to date, Soapbox Challenge. The day raised almost £24,000 which will be used to provide a family counsellor for the Macmillan unit to help the loved ones of those undergoing cancer treatment.

Find out more about My WiSH Charity at

www.mywishcharity.co.uk Or call the team on 01284 712952.

We would love to list all our amazing fundraisers but there are just too many to name. They never fail to amaze us and have walked for days, run all night, held concerts, bingos, comedy nights, open their gardens, built soapboxes, jumped out of planes, pulled Santa Sleighs and swum length after length of a pool. These wonderful people, along with the donations

of thanks we receive daily for the wonderful care the staff across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust have given, mean we have been able to provide bladder scanners, toys to be used as therapy and to help distract patients, specialist staff training, cancer wellbeing days, physio and occupational therapy equipment, electronic patient transfer

slides, cardiac monitors… the list is endless and everything enhances the care so thank you. We’ve also received many beautiful crafts over the year. The blankets, twiddlemuffs, clothes and toys make such a difference to our patients and often end up being priceless keepsakes. Thank you to all those who knit and sew tirelessly for us.

So that’s a brief round up of 2023. It’s been an exciting year and we are already gearing up for 2024. To find out our plans and to find out all things My WiSH head to www.mywishcharity.co.uk.

So, a final thank you once more for your generosity and support. Together we have made, and continue to make, a difference.

WiSHing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.

Michelle x

This months’ make is simple but effective and dates back to the Victorian times, when many people made their own Christmas cards at home. A popular craft activity at the time was to create cards with pin-prick paper lace borders. YOU WILL NEED: A sheet of A4 card folded in half, a pin, masking tape, a hand drawn Christmas template, a cork board and some ribbon.

Fold your card in half and then open back out Draw a simple Christmas shape on a piece of paper (stocking, Christmas tree, gingerbread man, star for example) Tape your template design onto the left hand side of the card with masking tape Place the card on the cork board Using your pin, prick holes all the way around the design making sure to create enough detail Gently peel off the template and fold card in half to reveal the pricked design Place some ribbon on the left hand side and add a bow, use a glue dot to secure in place.

TOP TIP… You could also use this technique to create paper to wrap around jam jars and then place tea light holders in them. The light will show through the pin pricks.

December Departures giving thanks One of the most important dates in our annual diary is the Sunday closest to the departure of the airfield staff in 1945. This year on the 10th of December at 11.00 we will pay our respects to those who served and sacrificed from Rougham. Our invitation from our Chairman and Committee: ‘The RCTAM welcomes you to join us to give thanks to all those who served with

GREENING YOUR CHRISTMAS DINNER

Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you all have a great time. As we all know this is a time of over indulgence and waste and without reducing the fun I thought we could have a look at how to give our Christmas dinner a greener twist without reducing the enjoyment. Even if you take on just one idea, it all makes a difference! have been thinking of ways to 1. Ireduce the waste generated by

the 30 million households cooking food for their Christmas dinner. At this time of year we seem to lose sight of the portion sizes required by the various members of our family and friends. We suddenly think that grandma has the appetite of a 100kg rugby player and our children have developed superhuman nutritional requirements. Here’s an example of how the waste mounts up, if every household threw out 0.5kg of roast potatoes, that adds up to 15,000 tonnes of wasted spuds. That’s crazy! have all heard the term 2. We food miles, this being the

miles travelled by an item of food from the producer to your plate. This Christmas have a look at the point of origin of all the ingredients you intend to pile high for your festive roast. Each food mile generates a Carbon dioxide footprint which all adds to increased climate change. You may find that a turkey has come all the way from Brazil, that’s around 5,000 miles, with a bit of planning you could source your turkey locally or at least check that it has not travelled from the other side of the world.

So what can you do, if you don’t have the time to work out portion sizes for yourself try an on-line calculator such as the one on www.lovefoodhatewaste. com this is easy to use and easy to understand, alternatively, do it yourself by simply counting out the various parts of the meal in proportion to the people coming along, it’s not difficult. Secondly, if you do have a lot of waste, Boxing day is a traditional day to cook up bubble and squeak, when I was young I had no idea what this meant and frankly I still don’t, however I do know The same applies to everything else on your plate, try and find a local source for vegetables, gravy, pigs in blankets and anything else that you love to add to the meal. Of course this is not always possible and cost can affect your decisions but its worth giving it a go. Some of you may even want to try a nut roast, this will reduce the overall carbon footprint of an average Christmas meal from around 1.5kg per person right down to 0.35kg per person. That’s an incredible 76% reduction. As I have mentioned in other articles, I love to grow vegetables and although we have munched our way through most of our produce this year, we always have

that you lob everything together, heat it and mash it,and that along with any left over meat provides an awesome meal. If you still have waste, pop it in the freezer for later consumption. a few parsnips and garlic bulbs left over for our Christmas dinner. It always feel satisfying to have something you have grown yourself on the plate. remember all the other 3. Finally, tips we have given over the

years when cooking any food to reduce energy consumption, ie. use a slow cooker, use a steamer, use a microwave or an air fryer, fill the oven and remember to switch the oven off ten minutes before the end of cooking time.

Merry C hristmas and Happy New Year

If you find this useful or have any other thoughts on what we can do to help reduce the carbon footprint of our Christmas dinner, then please contact me, I would love to hear from you – see below

Christ Church MORETON HALL

What a difference a day makes… Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church Like the change of the clocks and even the seasons of the year, it’s very comforting that certain points in our calendar are always there. Christmas day may seem like one of those points in our year. Many of us take comfort in the traditions we have, knowing that we can catch up with family or friends with the back drop of Christmas being the reason. But I’m not sure if many people now think of the celebrations that took place thousands of years ago over one special birth? Maybe you can think of the traditions you had on how your Christmas day went in your childhood and whether just because of tradition you have brought them forward to today? Or have you introduced a new tradition that you want people to carry on doing. Psalm 33:11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation. I read this Psalm as a nod to tradition from our faith, for

our faith, and by our faith. But tradition only continues if we make the effort, and God wants us to continue his story of faith actively. This may be done in your own mind (like praying), or by helping others less fortunate (people that are homeless, or those grieving) or you could be working on Christmas day to make sure people get the care they need. All of these acts of kindness may not be done because you have faith but they are seen by God and he is always there for us. I know God is listening because I have heard him. Not in the literal sense but whenever I reflect on a 54 | DECEMBER 2023

decision or action I took I am one hundred percent certain that he guided me. I pray that you are guided to do the right things, not just at Christmas, but in every day of the year. Perhaps you will try something new (like coming to church) and this turns into a tradition. I hope that you have a lovely lead up to Christmas and your Christmas day is not just another day, but one where old and new traditions are carried out so that you can reflect on what a difference a day makes.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

What are you celebrating this Christmas? On October 2nd 2006, Charlie Roberts entered a one room Amish School in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania in the USA, and opened fire on 25 children. He killed 5 little girls and left many children critically injured. He later turned the gun upon himself and took his own life. Within hours, countless TV crews had descended on Nickel Mines. They stayed for 5 days, eventually filming the funerals of the killer and the 5 little girls. But what made the biggest impression on their viewers, was the sight of the Amish parents going to the funeral of Charlie Roberts. There they greeted the killer’s mother, Terri, his wife, Marie, and her 3 children - and offered them their condolences. As if that wasn’t grace enough,

the Amish community also set up a fund to provide for Marie and her children. Within a week, the media was no longer dominated by the story of the killer; instead it was consumed with story of the Amish’s grace. Over 2400 articles were written about their extraordinary generosity. Their actions were celebrated in the New York Times and were featured on the Oprah Winfrey show. Terri Roberts wrote a bestselling book entitled: Forgiven. This month, the media will be full of articles about Christmas. But I sometimes wonder what they are celebrating … ? As a Christian, I am celebrating

that God came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. Because Jesus came to enable everyone to begin a relationship with God. He said that if you believe in him, God will forgive you for all your self-centred choices. He said that from the day you put your faith in him you will begin a relationship with God that will literally last forever! Which is why Christians often say that since they became believers; they have felt God at work within them, softening their hearts; making them more like him every day; enabling them to forgive others in the way that God has forgiven them. Which is what those Amish parents did. I don’t know if I could forgive as they did. But thanks to my relationship with God, like many Christians, I am now more gracious than I used to be. Which is why over the month of December, we at Southgate Church will have lots of Christmas services and events to help us celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ among us. If you’d like to celebrate with us, you’d be very welcome to give us a try. Rev. Mike Simm Minister of Southgate Church

THE 19TH HOLE BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH CULFORD SCHOOL Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching Welcome back to the 19th Hole… Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas!! I love this time of year, it gives us all a chance to have some time off and enjoy time with friends and family and if we are lucky, maybe still get out on the course for a round or two if the weather allows. If you’re reading this thinking you still have not got that gift for the golfer in your life, don’t worry I have listed a few ideas below. GOLF WINTER MITTS Winter Mittens are the best way to keep your hands warm throughout the winter months. Their fleece lining offers comfort and warmth, allowing the golfer to warm their hands between shots. ALL WEATHER GLOVES These can be used just in bad conditions or every round you play. They are supplied as a pair

and allow the golfer to have both hands covered for the duration of the round. BOBBLE HAT It doesn’t have to be a bobble hat… however they do look a little better I think. With most of your body heat being lost from your head its a must for any golfer in the winter months.

GOLF LESSON VOUCHER Are you the person that hears about every bad shot the golfer in your life hits when they return from the course? Why not allow me to help you hear a different story… lesson vouchers can be purchased in any different time lengths or packages of lessons. Please contact me for more details: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk

COACHES CORNER – MASTER THE DOWNHILL CHIP SHOT!! We have all done it… hit a great shot into the green only to see it has ended up on a downhill lie leaving you with a tricky down hill chip shot. This month I am going to give a few points that can help you combat this type of shot next time you face it. SET UP – I see a lot of people try and play this shot from bad set up positions. The set up we are looking for here is for you to match the slope on which you are

stood. This set up will help you make ground contact in the same position as from a flat lie. LANDING AREA – This will change in every situation, first thing to access is the lie and what club you feel happy using from the lie you have as this may change your landing spot and in turn club selection. If you want to land it close to you and run the ball to the flag then a lower lofted club would be the way forward however, if your landing spot is further away and you don’t need the ball roll out as far a more lofted club will be needed. Remember that from a downhill

I hope these few points help you combat these lies and get some better results. If you need any help with this or any other aspect of your game, then please contact me on the details below.

That’s just leaves me to say have a GREAT CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR and I will see you again in 2024!! 62 | DECEMBER 2023

lie you will take loft off the club and this may change how the ball flight looks and reacts when hitting the green. PRACTICE LIKE YOU WILL PLAY – These are specialist shots and not ones that you will have many of during your round. I would always recommend that you set up on a similar position and rehearse the shot. CONTACT is everything so after making these set up adjustments and after making a few practice swings to see where you are hitting the ground. Then adjust ball position if needed. Then when your happy, set in with confidence and hit a great chip shot!!
