the food you love and still lose weight!

Welcome to the August issue

The Summer holidays are here! Whilst I’m writing this the weather is a bit hit and miss (more miss) so hopefully it will improve in August.

There is A LOT going on in the town throughout August, and there really is something for everyone.

A production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz takes place at Theatre Royal from 18th August which really does sound like it’s going to be, well, ‘wonderful’. Find out more on page 5.

The popular Food & Drink Festival is back in Bury St Edmunds Town Centre on 27th & 28th August with food demos, the ‘beach’ and a farmers market – it’s well worth a visit, see page 8.

Colchester Zoo is always a fantastic day out, but even better this year, they are extending their opening hours on certain days, with live music into the evening, so even more value for money, see more on page 9.

And great news! Orissa are extending their up to 50% off your food bill offer when eating in throughout the Summer holidays, see more about the deal on page 41.

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events.

Take care & we’ll see you in September.

nutrition

We’ll work with your individual needs so you can feel healthy, without starving yourself. Plus, you don’t have to stop consuming ANY foods you enjoy!

accountability

It’s very common in the fitness industry for people to join a gym or health club and receive zero accountability or support. You simply get given a membership card and you’re told to get on with it. We do things a bit differently and with a smile. Our whole business exists because of the results we get our clients and the high level of support we provide is part of that. Plus with our unique health testing you’ll be able to see the difference you’ve made, not only to the number on the scales, but to your overall health.

We look forward to getting you the results you want very soon!

“I applied for the challenge and thought what have I got to lose? It’s only 6 weeks, just go for it. Results wise, I have become much fitter, gone from a 38/40" waist to a very comfortable 34". I would say mentally I have become sharper, it is almost like turning the clock back.”

Rougham Estate opens its doors (fields) again this Summer, for the public to enjoy the mass blooming of 2 hectares of Sunflowers.

The Estate invites visitors to not only enjoy the sea of blooms, but meander through the paths created, capturing striking photos amongst the ocean of yellow and picking their own chosen blooms to enjoy at home.

Flowers start at £2 per stem, with the Estate lending secateurs for a small refundable deposit.

As well as Sunflowers, the Estate also has a wildflower bed, with bunches of wildflowers for sale.

Open every day from 9am to 5pm, with free admission and parking, visitors are encouraged to take in nature and bring a picnic or enjoy the tasty food and refreshments served at the field from Folk About (Folk Café) and an ice cream van.

Activities for children include climbing the big bale pyramid, a bug hunt challenge and playing in the

sandpits. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

This wonderful field is located in Rougham, just east of Bury St Edmunds; it is easily accessible and clearly signposted from junction 45 of the A14. It makes a great day out for families in and around Suffolk.

Good Vibes, Music, Fun & Friendship

a music-based group for adults who meet at the Southgate Centre every Friday.

Good Vibes was started by Karen Naylor and Laura Sturgeon in October 2021, both of whom having prior experience of running groups for adults with learning disabilities.

They decided to become selfemployed as carers and set up a music-based service. A lot of groups had shut down due to Covid and they saw a need for people to have somewhere to go, particularly during the winter months. They enlisted Nichola Roe, a music therapist and Darnell O’Brien, a pianist, to help them in their venture. They now also have some great volunteers, Will, David and Stuart who are much loved and appreciated by the group.

The Good Vibes group is friendly and fun. Karen and Laura like to make everyone feel welcome and

valued. It is a safe space where clients can build good friendships and enjoy different aspects of music. Those who require one-toone support are able to bring their support staff with them free of charge. There has been a noticeable growth in everyone’s knowledge and understanding of music through Nichola’s music therapy sessions, and the afternoon singing sessions, and everyone has grown in confidence. The group perform small concerts in the summer and at Christmas for friends and family and they are now all keen to get up and sing into the microphone and lead a song.

In the morning session (10am-12pm), we offer Music Therapy run by Nichola. There are 10 available places for Music therapy and the morning session which should be booked in advance.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

The afternoon sessions (12.45 –2pm) consist of learning songs and singing, but this varies with some weeks being slightly different - Karaoke, YouTube choices for example. Songs learnt are used to perform two concerts per year (Summer and Christmas) where clients can invite friends and family to come and watch.

Good Vibes, group Music Therapy sessions have very positive results. They benefit a wide range of adults who have different needs. These can include – Learning Disabilities, Autism and Visual and Hearing Impairment. Through shared music making, Music Therapy can help people increase their confidence and self-esteem, attention and listening skills. It is a great success story for a local group working in a centre for the community.

For further information contact Karen Naylor on 07788 413929.

The topic of ‘Community’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series

How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well.

Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information for how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money.

Part of a community

Feeling part of a group or community, whether a sporting activity, social group, online forum or something else, is important for our sense of wellbeing. After all, we are social beings who need to feel like we belong. When we don’t feel this way, our stress and anxiety levels can go up. Being a member of a community is where we can find out about other people’s points of view, which can give us a richer take on the world. This can include sharing a common goal or interest with others such as joining a team to fundraise for an important cause, or finding something in common with others at a men’s shed or by volunteering.

Top tips for building community

l Make a list of activities you have enjoyed in the past and why. This can be a first step to build confidence and motivation.

l Try something new, such as an arts and crafts group, a reading group or the gym. Learning is 1 of your 5 ways to wellbeing - combining it with meeting others has huge mental health benefits.

l If you have a friend who also enjoys a group activity, buddying up to support each other can be a really helpful way of joining a different community and meeting others.

l Try volunteering as a great way to feel you are making a valued contribution. It’s also a good way to make new friends.

l Get inspiration for groups and different communities by searching Suffolk InfoLink: a directory of over 7,000 local organisations.

Find your tribe

This month, we are inviting you to ‘find your tribe’: think about the communities you belong to already (work, school, hobbies with others) and what you enjoy most about them. If you feel you’re not meeting your need to be part of a community, think about what you enjoy doing and take the extra step to find out more. Research conducted by Suffolk Mind into how well people are meeting their emotional needs shows that the need for community declined during the Covid-19 pandemic and hasn’t fully recovered, meaning that many people are not enjoying the benefits of socialising and spending time with others.

Joining groups can be daunting if we are going for the first time. This month’s top tips below are a good starting point if you’re uncertain where to begin.

Home-Start in Suffolk

For people who have moved away from friends and family, don’t know their local community, or have a partner who works long hours, often away from home, it can be a lonely and isolating experience. Nearly two thirds of families who come to Home-Start for support say that isolation is their main reason for needing help. Home-Start volunteers offer vital links into communities, helping families to access playgroups, parks, and specialist support of all kinds, building support networks so parents and children can flourish. One volunteer said: “I like to see the difference I can make to the family I support. Being able to take the boys out, knowing that this helps their dad, makes me feel good about myself.”

volunteersuffolk.org.uk

There a variety of volunteer roles available, from our core family support volunteer team providing home-visiting, telephone or virtual support and helping out at one of many groups across Suffolk. Volunteers also support our admin team, fundraising and events as well as our board of trustees. Find out more at homestartinsuffolk.org or by calling (01473) 621104.

Bryan Trueman Artist

I first heard of Bryan Trueman in the early nineties from an Australian friend who spoke with wide-eyed excitement about his artistry. Bryan’s name came up again a year or two later during a conversation with another neighbour from Melbourne, who was also familiar with his work and equally impressed with its virtuosity and inventiveness. From these early whisperings, I came to realise that Bryan was considered an artistic legend in Australia with examples of his work in many national collections. A few years later he moved to the English Lake District, where I had the privilege of getting to know both the man and his remarkable work first hand. I quickly discovered that as well as Australia, he has practised as an artist and exhibited in many other countries, including the USA, New Zealand, Holland, Malaysia, Japan and Bangladesh.

Bryan is fundamentally a painter and printmaker, who for many years used the surfaces of ceramic vessels as a crucible for exploring stunning gestural mark making. And what vessels! Bryan is also a consummate ceramic artist. His

extraordinary understanding of the very essence of clay as a material and his finely tuned sense of form has meant that his three dimensional work is never forced. He lets the clay do what it naturally does best. His exquisite appreciation of form is evident in all of his ceramic pieces. But it is the surfaces of these vessels that make the greatest impression on us. For much of his long career as a virtuoso ceramicist, Bryan has treated his creations in clay as if they were handy canvases. He has always been true to his early training in painting and printmaking.

In the last few decades Bryan has diverted his creative energies from ceramics back into printmaking and digital mark making. He first realised the creative potential of digital processes three decades ago when he lived in the Lake District, but it was his move to the wide skies and venerable villages of Suffolk that have shaped his recent vision. Throughout his life, Bryan has chosen to live and work in exciting visual environmentsfrom the wetlands of New Jersey to the magisterial shores of

Tasmania; from the tea tree groves of Victoria to the ethereal beauty of the English Lakes and his beloved Brittany. His imagination is charged by such places. But in recent years I have seen how the flint flushwork and ancient windmills of Suffolk and Norfolk have gradually percolated their way into his visual vocabulary. His excitement at discovering a graveyard of ancient barges at Pin Mill, or the reedy beauty of Snape, has profoundly shaped the direction of his artistic journey. His creative eye is as much at home in East Anglia, as those of John Sell Cotman or John Nash.

However, much of Bryan’s recent East Anglian output is still profoundly influenced by past experiences of other visual worlds. There are strong echoes of windblown tea trees on the edge of the Tasman Sea in some of his strongly animated Suffolk landscapes. Compare the swirling energy of this recent print to that of a 1979 platter executed during his Australian years. Bryan’s powerful visual vocabulary has developed over a long and eventful artistic life.

*Ivan Day is an historian of the social history and culture of food. He is celebrated for his reconstructions of historical table settings, which combine museum objects with accurate recreations of period dishes. His work has been exhibited in many major museums in the UK, Europe, and North America, including the Fitzwilliam Museum, Getty Research Institute, Metropolitan Museum NYC, Detroit Institute of Arts, Gardiner Museum, and Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He is the chair of the celebrated Leeds Symposium on Food History and Traditions and is the author of a number of books and numerous papers on food culture and dining.

Bryan’s pictorial repertoire is rich in calligraphic gesture, explosive brushwork and a vibrant sense of pent up energy. The rural lanes, hedgerows and ancient field boundaries appear to almost detonate in these chromatic apparitions of the Suffolk landscape.

I find Bryan’s working methods fascinating. Take this confident and highly energised initial painting, which will be worked up and eventually culminate in a gicleé print, probably going through many transformations in the process. Layer upon layer are built up by the artist, one over the other, reflecting the laminated strata of the landscape itself. These are the pictorial progressions of a master whose painterly skills have been honed over a lifetime.

The calligraphic mark-making possibilities afforded by a recent visit to Mickle Mere have resulted in some novel visual explorations.

This image illustrates how Bryan exploits graphic manipulation on his computer in the same way that he uses a sketchbook in order to

develop his ideas and reconnoitre new creative routes. Bryan’s is a constant visual adventure that never stays still for a moment.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

Well school has finished for another year and what an inspirational time it has been at Hardwick, every term has seen huge achievements and initiatives.

The race to the end of year finish line has been frenetic and full of excitement and activity. We had our brilliant sports days, fabulous family events; Mr Rampley, Mrs Orr and Mrs Rayson have given their time again to accompany pupils on sporting challenges ranging from assault courses, rounders and athletics. We are so proud of Hardwick children representing the school on a regular basis and the amazing valued support of staff.

Pupils were hugely attentive, took part brilliantly and asked well thought out questions when we were visited by the Steel Bone Charity where we learnt about life after an amputation.

Finally the moment of the month was the fantastic Year 5 & 6 production of Darwin Rocks, an incredible performance with amazing singing and

acting, stunning solos provided goose-bump moments and we are proud of every child, their smiles throughout showed how much they enjoyed the show. A massive well done to Mr Rampley and the support staff

for yet another fantastic production.

We hope you are all enjoying your summer holidays and wish you an enjoyable break and look forward to welcoming children back in September.

LSS Summer health tips…

Whilst in a car or sitting in direct sunlight do ensure that the affected limb is covered. It’s best to avoid extreme temperature as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s) rooms and don’t sit too close to heat sources such as bar-b-ques and outdoor heaters. Using a cooling spray, iced water on a spray bottle works well, on your compression garment can help cool the affected limb and yourself.

Incidentally, if you sit out on concrete or by a whitewashed wall – the sun’s rays also reflect off these. Ultraviolet rays are invisible and are present in every season, so sun protection isn’t something that you should reserve for a summer beach day. On a cloudy day, up to 80% of UV exposure remains as compared to a sunny day. UVA light can also pass through windows, even when you are indoors

or in your car. A tip from skin consultants – wear a face cream with a minimum SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 all year round. Protecting skin from the sun is the best Anti-Ageing treatment there is.

VOICES The West Suffolk Hospital Patient Engagement and Equality Group

LSS is proud to be part of the West Suffolk Hospital’s Patient Engagement and Equality Group - VOICES - which seeks to have representation from local groups to ensure that they cover as many different patient groups as possible. By engaging with existing groups, VOICES hopes to have a 2-way channel of communication so this can be used as feedback to make improvements to the experience of patients and carers.

‘I will be there health allowing’

CPSG is such a nice friendly group of people if you have chronic pain and feel like no one really understands your day to day struggles. Just to get out of bed most days feel like your being judged instead of supported. If you ever feel you needed a friend who gets you or at the very least tries to understand I’m sure you

POSITIVELY CRAFTY

will find we are just what you need, a group of friends you just haven’t met yet. I look forward to meeting you.

These words come from the heart of a member and how she felt before joining the group. Like most people may do at some time or other. The thought was that

In the July session crafts were made for a fundraising event at Cockfield.

A hive of activity to achieve a selection of crafts — lavender bags, cards, magnets, post it notes in covers, dog bandanas and crochet animals. The fundraiser was a successful, fun day for all involved, despite the wind.

if this message reached out to just one person, it was worth putting into words.

CPSG is a face-to-face nonjudgmental group. Being supported is what we are all about. Seeing the person is our main focus, not their condition. Meetings are relaxed and informal for both those living in pain and their loved ones.

Crafts vary from month to month and at the end of each session you always go home with a sense of achievement. Its not about completing a craft, its about coming out, joining in, being with others, helping each other, exploring your creativity, learning a new skill and being absorbed, more importantly lessening your focus on the pain.

Come & watch our free soapbox challenge!

It’s just a month to go until a host of soapboxes take to Mount Road in Bury St Edmunds so make sure you put this fantastic community event in your diary. Saturday 2nd September will see teams from companies, clubs and organisations, colleagues and friends take the stage to dance for the audience before taking off down the ramp and down the hill to see who can race the winning time. Points are also awarded for the best soapbox, best presentation, and the best fundraiser so it’s a day full of competition as our soapboxers are all keen to lift a trophy.

Here’s all you need to know about the day.

Start time

11am - The Soapbox Parade will commence the start of the event from Soapbox City.

Soapbox City

Based in the grounds of the Priory School, each team will have a ‘parking lot’. You will be able to see the soapboxes up close and personal. There are also additional stalls plus food and drink here. You will also find first aid facilities and toilets.

Parking

We encourage spectators to park at Ram Meadow carpark which is a 10 minute walk away. Please do not park on the residential roads. If you need disabled access, please contact the charity before the day on 01284 713466 or by emailing fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk.

Finally

Spectating

It is free to watch our soapbox event, but we will have volunteers selling flags, programmes and collecting donations on the day. All money raised will go towards providing a family counsellor, offering psychological support to the family members of patients being treated for cancer at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

Huge thanks go to our main sponsor Treatt plus to our other sponsors, Sealey Tools, Clarkes of Walsham, GT Cleaning Machines, AC Webb, Knights Lowe, Bury Town Council, HALO and, of course, the Priory School. We couldn’t host this event without you.

Judging complete for Bury in Bloom

By the time you read the August edition of the Bury St Edmunds Directory, the teams of judges will have viewed over 20,000 front gardens including Marham Park and areas of

Moreton Hall previously classified as Rougham.

To be able to include these areas the latest Ordnance Survey map had to be sourced and our excellent printers had to divide it into the 11 zones that are covered by Certificates Of Merit.

Last year the points system was revised to reward more wildlife friendly, sustainable gardens while still rewarding more traditional planting.

Details of points system at www.buryinbloom.org.uk under Certificates of Merit.

Over 80 judges attended the briefing at the end of June. Judging was completed by sunset on Sunday July 16th. In the September edition look out for confirmation of how many certificates were awarded.

Enjoy your gardening

As part of Bury in Bloom’s ongoing sustainability pledge, we are working closely with the local Council’s to implement schemes across the town to maximise our environmental impact, such as installing rainwater harvesting tanks, using peat-free compost and most recently a new initiative to replace annual bedding plants on roundabouts with perennials.

This will see several immediate benefits; less watering, lower maintenance costs, zero ‘fast

fashion’ bedding plants arriving twice a year and ultimately providing a natural home for wildlife all-year-round. To start us off, we begin with a brand new scheme at the Sainsburys roundabout in Bedingfeld Way.

You may have noticed there have been no plants added for the summer – and this is so that we can begin preparing the land to control thuggish weeds and improve water retention and drainage in the soil, ready for planting in the autumn.

The considerable cost saving to West Suffolk Council for this roundabout will instead be redirected and spent on the new perennial plants. Signage will be installed very soon to make people aware, and we hope that if this project is a success, more roundabouts will follow suit and we can create a cleaner, greener town for all to enjoy.

Both Suffolk County Council and West Suffolk Council have already ceased the use of Glyphosate weed killer in a bid to reduce harm to wildlife.

POSTCARD CLUB BURY ST EDMUNDS

Our club celebrated its 25th anniversary with a buffet and an exhibition of items from the archives, including photos, documents, and newspaper cuttings, covering the inaugural meeting through to the present day. Each member received a booklet, special bookmark, and commemorative postcard. A lunchtime meal was also enjoyed at a local hostelry.

Eighteen people attended the inaugural meeting on Tuesday 23rd June 1998, three of whom are still members. The club has grown considerably since that time and several members have been with us for over twenty years. We are now the only postcard club in East Anglia and have members not only from the Bury St Edmunds area, but also regular travellers from much further afield.

NEWSFLASH:

The popular annual Bury St Edmunds Postcard Fair, which started in 2000 and ceased in 2019, returns (with 25+ dealers) on Saturday 9th September 2023 at the County High School, Beetons Way, Bury St Edmunds.

For those wanting to shop online, the new site is much faster and easy-to-shop and we are pleased with the end result. Echoes Success (Again!)

Sunday 2nd July saw our annual ‘Echoes of the Past’ day. Well, it was – brilliant, fantastic, awesome, amazing. THANK YOU all for coming and making the day so very special.

From our Chairman:

“Echoes of the Past” on Sunday was a fabulous day, if a little breezy!, I’d like to thank all volunteers, reenactors, exhibitors and especially the public for making this small show the success it has become. Special thanks to Steve Suttle for his amazing PA work again, the show wouldn’t be the same without the soundtrack. Paul Groves and I were swamped on the BBQ and I didn’t get a chance to get the camera out (thank you photo contributor’s). Keep an eye out for “Echoes” next year, it should be around the same time but we’ll confirm soon. It will be bigger and better with hopefully a BBMF flypast and a skirmish between the Allies and Germans. Thank you all again.”

As Graham has said – THANK YOU - The committee, volunteers and many more, are all to be congratulated in making this such a memorable and successful event.

So, our season ‘marches on’! We are still open on Sunday 10.00 to 16.00 for Tea, Coffee, Ice Cream and … Wait for it …. CAKE!!! Yes the famous ‘Death by Chocolate’ at cake-o-clock (3.00pm) is still on the menu.

There is still ‘No rest for the….. volunteers!’ With the dust gently settling, Mr Chairman is again ‘rallying the troops’ for Wednesday evening Work Parties – ALL are very welcome to join in with the ‘Jobs’ and maintenance that are always needed.

So – See You ANY SUNDAY – We Need You!!!

(All very Welcome)

P.S. Our Tea Dance had to be cancelled due to the weather – it is being rescheduled, date to be arranged. We will update when this has been booked and please watch our website/FB page and of course, in here for the details.

In the last few months we have had a good look at cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, but there are still 2 other sources of fresh air entering your home which can push up your heating bills in the Winter months, these being draughts and ventilation. The best way to reduce this heat loss is draught proofing your home. This is a job you can do yourself so no need to call in the experts. It shouldn’t cost you much, roughly £120 with annual savings of about £50, so there is a 2+ year payback but it is still an efficient way to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Currently there are no grants to help you with draught proofing unless you live in the council of Cheshire East. Lucky them!

1. If you have windows without double glazing or poorly fitting double glazing, then buy draught-proofing strips to stick around the window frame and fill the gap between the window and the frame. There are three types: Self-adhesive foam strips, metal strips or plastic strips, the latter two with brushes or wipers attached. Make sure the strip is the right size to fill the gap in your window. If the strip is too big it will be crushed and you may not be able to close the window. If it’s too small there will still be a gap.

2. Outside doors can be the source of heat loss but you can reduce this for just a few pounds. Here are the main things to consider.

Keyhole – buy a purpose-made cover that drops a metal disc over the keyhole. Letterbox – use a letterbox flap or brush, but remember to measure your letterbox before you buy. Gaps around the door – fit foam, brush or wiper strips similar to those used for windows.

Inside doors need draught-proofing if they lead to a room you don’t normally heat, such as your spare room or kitchen. Keep those doors closed to stop the cold air from moving into the rest of the house and if there is a gap at the bottom of the door, block it with a draught excluder.

3. Loft hatchesPut strips of draughtexcluding material around the hatch edges.

4. Chimneys and fireplaces

Buy a chimney draught excluder – devices that help stop draughts and heat loss up the chimney, usually fitted within the chimney or around the fireplace. Remember to remove the draught-proofing if you decide to light a fire!

Once you have completely insulated your home you may want to check if you have missed any spots where hot air is escaping. In which case you could employ someone with a thermal imaging camera who can scan the outside of your house and highlight any points where excess heat is lost.

There are plenty more simple ideas to help you draught proof your home, please take a look on our website for the full list:

ecofrenzy.com/home-insulation-savings

None of us know how the cost of energy will fluctuate in the future so any savings are a bonus, and with the climate crisis really starting to ramp up, any reduction in your Carbon footprint is a help.

Christ Church

Honesty is the best policy

I am writing this while away visiting our Best Man from our wedding (back 1999), he lives with his family in a very idyllic place in North West Wales.

He currently works on the trains which follow the beautiful Welsh coast line. It gave him time to tell us about how nice it is to do a job that has responsibilities but is not stressful.

It reminded me of when I was young, I had a chance to follow my dreams and become an actress, the reality was I loved Bury St Edmunds and knew I wouldn’t want to leave my home for my career. Happiness is a great concept but for many people being honest about what makes us happy can be very different from the dreams we have.

I am sure like myself you know someone who has Dementia, we have learnt so much about how the mind changes the person we may have known.

It is very difficult for everyone who witnesses the changes of personality and characteristics in someone living with

Dementia and it may be a long journey to get the diagnosis that people may wish to deny they have.

When we are honest with ourselves it can often free us to get on with the life that we have.

At Christ Church we have been blessed with an amazing Decaf group that have been running every Thursday morning for people who may have dementia and importantly the people who are caring for them.

Decaf is a place for people to share their experiences but it is a relaxed atmosphere with quizzes, tea & coffee with small donation to cover the costs. Geraldine who set the group up really would like people to volunteer their time to set up the room and clear chairs and drinks at the end. If you have time to help this wonderful group even if it’s a couple of times a month Geraldine would love to hear from you. Just call the Church on 01284 769956 or email revjonathanford@googlemail. com.

I may not have become a famous actress and it was only when I was honest with myself that I could say I am happy.

We are learning about Jonah through chapters 1 to 4 in August on each Sunday. Jonah was not able to see what he already had in front of him even when God saved him from the sea’s and grew a plant for shade from the sun. I am looking forward to the talks about Jonah to bring his experiences into my thoughts and how I can relate them to my life. Church has a great way of helping us look at different things in our lives which can help us be honest about our own capabilities.

God loves all of us, but we may not look in the mirror and see what God sees: A unique individual who is capable of whatever they put their mind to, if they believe in themselves as much as God does.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, July saw a very wet and wild OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at Royal Liverpool and as always we were treated to a great week of competition. We have another first time major champion in Brian Harman, he won with a very impressive score of -13 which was 6 shots better than anyone else. Brian looked in control all week and really played the course his way. Impressive Stat: for the week of The Open he holed 58 out of 59 putts inside 10ft, this is crazy and just shows us all the area we should all be practicing more. Moving forward the events throughout August come thick and fast again with the conclusion to the PGA Tour season and the race for the FEDEX cup.

COACHES CORNER – HIT MID IRON SHOTS PURE!

This month we are looking at iron play, as essential area of the game where better strikes will allow us to be closer to the flag with our approach shots allowing for potential better scores.

This article will give you some simple points and a drill that will allow you not to over compliant this in practice and will allow you to take this practice to the course to help you achieve better results.

When I am teaching the biggest area I see for inconsistent strikes is having too much body movement throughout the golf swing.

Set Up and Backswing

As you can see from the set up (below), the chest (sternum) inline with the ball both at address and as the club is moved into the backswing. This allows for an easier transition into the downswing movement, and more importantly gives a better

opportunity to allow the golf club to hit the ground in the same place each time.

If the body weight moves too much in backswing (right for right handed golfer) it will lead to having to make a bigger movement in your down swing. If this large movement is not reversed into impact this can lead to inconsistent strikes.

Downswing movement / feeling

So you’re in a great position at the top of your backswing, now its time to strike this iron shot pure. I just want you to think of moving your body weight or momentum towards the target from this point, resulting in you holding your finish position. This movement is easier from the position you are now easier as you haven’t moved too much in your backswing.

From here all you need to do is watch another great shot find its target.

If you are still struggling with your irons after this, or any other part of your game then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf.

Drill – TWO TEE DRILL

This drill is great to give you the same feeling through impact without the needing the space to hit golf balls. As you can see from the images, the first tee is positioned where the golf ball would be positioned and then the second tee is positioned around 3 to 4 inches in front of (towards the target) of the first one. Now all you need to practice is hitting both tee’s as the go through the impact area, being able to do this will ensure you and the club are moving into impact well.
