Welcome to the April issue

It’s April... And now the clocks have gone forward, we can look forward to lighter evenings. I don’t know about you, but I always feel a bit more motivated with the longer daylight hours, especially if it’s still light when I finish work.

April is a busy month, with a lovely long weekend to look forward to at Easter. Why not try our recipe for Lemon Drizzle Simnel Slices, perfect for Easter.

We’re also gearing up for a very special event in May, King Charles’ Coronation. Both Moreton Hall Community Centre and Southgate are holding celebrations (more details on page 15 and 20) so it’s a great chance to enjoy this historical event with your local community.

Also on Sunday 14th May, The South Suffolk Show is back! They have generously offered our readers the chance to win a family ticket, find out more about the show and how to enter on page 31. Entries close on 24th April, so don’t miss out!

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care and we’ll see you in May.

Concrete Plans

We have now seen the start of works to upgrade and replace the concrete sections of the A14 to the East of Bury St Edmunds. This will be from J47a at Haughley through to J49. I would anticipate there will be

Compiegne

significant disruption at times if the scheme on the A11 at Wymondham is anything to go by, however they have done a good job of managing works and communicating. The project has no local council involvement

Kevelaer Visit

Almost a Highways special this month. We saw considerable flooding and closure of the A143 Compiegne Way last month, causing significant disruption to BSE as traffic was routed through the town. I have made it clear that this is simply not acceptable. I have not been in post at County for very long and have been constrained on this project.

Under the last administration, over £700k was spent on the section, but the solution is not reliable and depends on pumps. I had proposed last year to alter the topography of the road, which was rejected (due to previous spend), so I then proposed a very cheap solution to skim off the top layer of earth to the south side of the road to improve flow into the existing drainage. Both myself and Becky Hopfensperger have had significant talks to change the situation and you may have seen recent works and closures to the section. I am hopeful that this will draw a line under the problem and massive action is being taken.

and is run by Highways England as part of the national network. We will see a total reconstruction, with complete removal of the current surface, barriers and drains. More details can be found online at nationalhighways.co.uk

We have two twin towns associated with Bury (triplet town?!). Compiegne in France (to which the road is a tribute) is one and we saw a delegation from our other friends at Kevelaer in Germany, near the Dutch border in April. It’s really pleasing to be able to maintain our civic friendships across the channel and it brings a lot of value to our town with the exchange of culture.

Extended Parkiiiiiing

I'm pleased to report that long awaited plans to upgrade the community parking at Moreton Hall has now come to fruition. We listened to what people were asking for and it was clear from the new facilities at the community centre and higher footfall at the youth centre, businesses, football pitches and the church that more spaces were necessary. Birgitte Mager has worked tirelessly to get the project over the line and it's great that we've now completed our end.

Crowning Achievements

At time of writing, we eagerly await the coronation of King Charles III. I’d like to take this chance to thank several people for the planned celebrations. We have excellent plans afoot in Moreton Hall thanks to the Community Centre staff, especially Nigel and Katie. The Round Table has led on town centre plans and we have, so far, funded 5 local groups around Bury with up to £2k each from Town Council to provide varied local events. Report back next month!

I just love everything about Eventus 22. The support is unrivalled.

Before Eventus 22, I had a bit of a ‘can’t do’ attitude. Life was hectic, I was so much more stressed, I’m working full-time, 2 small children and studying for my degree. I’d lost myself a bit.

When I first joined, it very much was to lose the baby weight I’d put on. It has completely transformed how I feel. I’m stronger, leaner, less stressed and so much more confident.

In my 30 day challenge, I lost something like 30cm all over. I get quite a buzz from exercise now.

The topic of ‘Food and drink’

Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series

How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’, one for each month, to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well.

Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information for how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money.

Eat Well, Feel Well!

The ‘Eat Well, Feel Well’ campaign aims to raise awareness to families and schools of the importance of eating well and building good relationships with a variety of food to maintain good mental and physical health, and preventing eating problems in children. The campaign brings together webinars, tips and advice on various topics centred around eating to support parents, carers, teachers and young people. To find out more, visit: suffolk.gov.uk/eatwell

Eating on a budget

There is plenty of support available to make your food last longer and to spend less while enjoying a healthy diet.

www.foodsavvy.org.uk - Food Savvy is about turning your food leftovers into a delicious new meal to save money, with ideas to plan and store your food to make it last even longer.

www.bbc.co.uk - The BBC’s Family £1 recipe meal plan introduces a budgetfriendly meal plan which is flexible and cost effective.

Infolink.suffolk.gov.uk - Visit the cost of living pages on InfoLink for a wealth of information about saving money and support available to people in Suffolk.

Food and mood

What and when we eat is not just important for our physical health, but for our emotional health. Here are some top tips to help you eat well for your body and mind:

1. Eat regularly - if your blood sugar drops, it can make you feel tired, irritable or depressed. Eating regularly will help keep your sugar levels steady, especially foods with slow-release energy that are high in protein like eggs, nuts, and seeds.

2. Get the right fats - your brain needs fatty oils such as omega 3 to keep it well, so rather than avoiding all fats in your diet, it’s important to get the right ones. Oily fish is good, but walnuts are great too (and shaped like a brain).

3. Increase your protein - protein contains amino acids, which helps your brain regulate your thoughts and feelings, plus your blood sugar levels. Protein rich foods include lean meat, eggs, fish, cheese as well as oats, brown rice and nuts.

4. Drink more - if you’re not hydrated enough, you may find it harder to concentrate, experience changes to mood and headaches. Water and herbal teas are best.

5. Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables - the minerals, vitamins and fibre in fruit and vegetables are essential to keeping us physically and mentally well. Eating a variety of colours every day - a ‘rainbow’ - is the best way of achieving a good balance.

6. Cut down on caffeine - drinking too much caffeine can make you feel anxious, and even depressed, and affect your quality of sleep. You don’t have to stop completely, just cutting down on the amount of caffeinated drinks can work wonders, especially in the latter part of your day.

7. Pay attention to your gut - your gut and your brain use similar chemicals, so looking after one supports the other. Foods to include for a healthy gut are high in fibre including fruit and vegetables, wholegrains and live yoghurts.

Monday 8th May on Hardwick school field

We hope everyone is having very chocolaty Easter holidays and we now look forward to a very exciting event in May when we celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. The Southgate Community Centre along with Southgate Church and Hardwick Primary School have planned a huge celebratory party on the playing field at the School.

Our usual May Fun Day will now be held on the Coronation Bank Holiday Monday May 8th and it really is going to be one amazing Royal party. As in previous years, the event will start with an inter school five-a-side football

tournament and we have ten Year 2 teams taking part so there is bound to be some great action on the two pitches. Fantastic news is we have successfully applied for Coronation event funding so all the bouncy castles, obstacle courses and slides will be free

for families to enjoy. There will also be the usual arena displays, stalls, tombola, a table top sale, refreshments the Southgate Church puppets and activities. We plan to have a Royal Fancy Dress with prizes, bring along a picnic New to the Fun Day and very exciting is that we have arranged for live music with the eight piece jazz, soul and funk band The Gray Project agreeing to perform.

If you are a charity or other local organisation and would like a stall – let us know.

The fun starts at 11.00am so book this date as a must in your diaries.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

Such excitement at Hardwick as we not only celebrated World Book Day but also the long awaited opening of our brand new library.

Pupils and staff dressed to impress as their favourite book characters and immersed themselves in the joy of reading, the opening of the library was a long time in planning and creating, the School Council and Cllr Sarah Stamp, who donated £1,000 from her locality funding, cut the ribbon.

The restocked library has an impressive selection of new books, “It was an honour being invited to the opening and to spend time with the children and see their excitement as they explored all the new books available was very special indeed” enthused Cllr Stamp.

Small changes... Big difference!

It is amazing how often just a few small changes to our posture and look after ourselves can make such a big difference!

At LSS’s March meeting we learnt about how to move correctly from our excellent speaker, Andrea Walsh when she gave her Alexander Technique ‘restore your factory settings’ talk and demonstration, “It’s like a ‘User Manual’ for the human body and mind”. “Things to take away” which form the basis of the Alexander Technique principles:

• Stopping, pausing and thinking before we start an activity or movement

• Think of the head, which weighs 10lbs, balancing on the spine

• Be more conscious aware of the way you move

• Observe your reaction to situations - do you stiffen and tense through fear? Say no to that response.

As we grow older, the automatic ease and fluidity of posture, balance and movement that we had as a young child changes as we develop postural habits which may cause or aggravate pain. We often do not realise the postural habits, both good and bad

that we have grown into doing.

Think of ‘Nose over Toes’ when standing up from a seated position. If you watch sprinters, they only straighten up when around 50 metres into a 100 metre race as their head is leading their body movement. When getting up from a seated position, lead with your head and try not to look down.

Donations help charity honour the Queen

Last month saw us open a new garden at the Newmarket Community Hospital to commemorate her late majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

The charity worked with local councillor, James Lay, who worked tirelessly to secure donations for the project, and it was wonderful to be able to invite everyone along to see just what their generosity had provided.

The garden will be open to visitors, staff and patients and will provide a beautiful and calm area for them to all enjoy. It was designed and built by A1 Trees & Landscape Builders with areas created to allow space for privacy and for wheelchair access. The garden also contains two horseshoe sculptures to reflect

the Queen’s love of horses and Newmarket.

If you have a need to head to the Newmarket Community Hospital do turn left, away from the main reception, where you will see this beautiful new space. Huge thanks to James and the wonderful donors for making it possible. We are sure it is going to make a big difference to so many for years to come.

Thanks to their generosity more gardens will be refurbished, and we look forward to showing you these in the future.

Shooters support the cancer unit

we wanted to raise the money for the cancer unit at the hospital. “We just wanted to raise the money for a good cause, and we had a few guests come in to take part in the shoot.

“We were originally going to do it for a national charity, but we decided that we would keep it local and we were really pleased with the amount we raised.”

The Lakenheath Shooting Syndicate supported the cancer unit at the West Suffolk Hospital raising an incredible £1000 to help us enhance the care of patients undergoing cancer treatment. The syndicate wanted to support the unit as loved ones had been

treated by them and raised the money by hitting a specific target over the course of their shooting season.

Steve Peasey, who lives in Lakenheath, said “We have had a few members who have had family members affected by cancer, so

This money will allow us to continue providing not only equipment but counselling for patients as well as exercise classes and HOPE courses. All these are invaluable to patients, both during and after treatment, so thank you to Steve and all involved in raising such a fantastic donation.

Lemonsimneldrizzleslices

Ingredients:

Oil, for the tin

250g butter, softened

250g golden caster sugar, plus 50g for the topping

2 large lemons, zested and juiced

3 large eggs

200g plain flour

100g ground almonds

2 ½ tsp baking powder

50ml milk

100g mixed dried fruit

300g marzipan, chilled

50g icing sugar

Method

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Oil and line a 20cm x 30cm baking tin with baking parchment. Beat the butter and sugar with most of the lemon zest until pale and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing constantly, then add the flour, almonds and baking powder, and keep mixing until you have a smooth cake batter. Stir in the milk and dried fruit.

Scrape half the cake batter into the tin and level the surface. Coarsely grate half the marzipan onto the batter to create an even layer, then cover with the rest of the batter, trying not to disturb the marzipan too much. Level the top and bake for

Sponsored

35-40 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. If any wet cake mixture clings to the skewer, return the cake to the oven for 5 mins, then check again. Mix the remaining caster sugar with a quarter of the lemon juice, then drizzle over the cake while still warm. Leave the cake to cool in the tin.

Mix the icing sugar with enough lemon juice to make a drizzly icing – 2-3 tsp should be enough. Divide the rest of the marzipan into 11 even lumps and roll into balls. Drizzle the icing over the cake, top with the marzipan balls and sprinkle with the remaining lemon zest. Will keep in an airtight container for up to five days.

The speaker at our March meeting was Allen Burbridge who gave us a fascinating illustrated lecture on the Hervey family and their association with the Ickworth Estate.

The Hervey family acquired the Ickworth estate because of the marriage of Thomas Hervey to Jane Drury in 1460 and the estate remained home to the Hervey family for the next five centuries. However, the house that we know today was the vision of Frederick Hervey, the

4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry, who, in the 1700s, aspired to create a house that was both magnificent and convenient. Upon his death his son took over the building project, eventually moving his family into the completed house in 1829. The age of the country house went into decline during the post war period and the Hervey’s tenure at Ickworth came to an end in 1956 when the 4th Marquess presented the house and estate to the Treasury in lieu of death duties.

Mr Burbridge finished his lecture by speaking about the conservation work that goes on behind the scenes at Ickworth throughout the year to preserve the house and collections. By the end of the evening, we all felt that we needed to visit Ickworth House again to learn more! A possible outing perhaps?

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 5th April at 7.30pm at the Moreton Hall Community Centre.

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome, and your first meeting is free!

The Power of Nature

Support for Young People aged 16-25 with Education & healthcare plans

Education, health and care plans (EHCP) are for children and young people aged up to 25 with special educational needs who require specialist support due to their particular heath or social care needs.

At Green Light Trust we use the Power of Nature to support disadvantaged and marginalised adults, children and young people who may be struggling, for whatever reason, to move forwards in life.

The support we offer to children and young people with an EHCP is primarily in nature-based environments, but we use a blended approach using the classroom when appropriate. Learners are encouraged to deepen their interests as they are exposed to real-life situations. Nature is their main teacher, tutors are simply supporters to their learning, and together we create an environment of expression, individuality and well-being.

At Green Light Trust we work together on tasks which are mindful, purposeful and fun. In an environment that requires learners to think for themselves and find solutions to problems from the real world rather than

from a textbook, young people thrive mentally, physically and socially. The woodland environment gives learners the opportunity to try new things which they didn’t know they were capable of. Confidence starts to grow, and learners are successful. Once this process has begun new possibilities appear. The support in place from the Green Light Trust team enables learners to take new steps in their lives. We follow a flexible curriculum designed to meet the needs of the individual but based around their EHCP and their aspirations and development goals as they move into adulthood – a person centred approach.

Young people attend our courses two days per week for 50 weeks per year or three days per week for 36 weeks of the year, termtime only. The structure of an academic calendar and its long breaks can often be detrimental to a learner’s progress, consequently our programme is designed to be flexible so that each young person can be fully supported.

plan is built with them and will focus upon their interests and academic needs to put them on a career path they are interested in. We work with employers to improve pathways into the workplace.

There will be time within the woodland environment to learn appropriate woodland management tasks, green woodworking, natural crafts and nature connection activities. Building inspiration and the resources to build, create, experiment and develop. Each programme consists of the following elements:

• Personal & social development skills

• Employment and community skills

• English and maths

• A portfolio of AQA unit achievements

We host these programmes from woodland sites across East Anglia including in Lawshall, just outside Bury St Edmunds.

In addition to our EHCP programme, we run a range of activities for people of all ages. To find out more about our work visit: www.greenlighttrust.org; email: info@greenlighttrust.org or call on: 01284 830829

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum

Yes, the new season is here!

Easter weekend – Sunday 9th April will be our opening day. Weather permitting, we will be joined by military re-enactors and vehicles.

From 10.00am the volunteers will be on hand to meet and greet you. As usual our entrance is free, although we rely totally on donations. If you can afford to, please contribute to keep us functioning.

As a bonus to you we are able

Following on from last month’s quote, our Chairman, Graham reiterates:

“The Rougham Control Tower is Grade 2 listed and has been for several years, that includes all the buildings within the museums fence line. We have a 99-year lease, with about 68 years left to run. Unfortunately, the issue here is between the

to open on the Bank Holiday Monday – together with the other bank Holidays during the summer. We are very grateful to all the volunteers (and committee) who will be giving their extra time to be open.

The ‘winter jobs’ have seen modifications to the layout and displays of our items. We hope that by moving the exhibits into a ‘more orderly’ arrangement you can gain more information

If anything happens to the Memorial to the 94th BG (H) they will have to contend with several thousand irate 8th USAAF veteran’s families as well as us Brits.”

about our history and the past airfield stories.

Thank you to all the helpers who have weathered the weather (occasionally in not friendly weather). Without their help your museum would not be to the high quality it is.

We are always looking for help, can you volunteer please?

I personally wish to put on record that we all totally support the Museum. But the active airfield plays a significant role in both the visible contribution and the atmospheric ambiance of the museum. This is a community facility.

Please support both the museum and the airfield.

additional opening dates

After a great start to April, we will have three double weekends in May - the 1st and 2nd, then the 7th and 8th (the King’s Coronation weekend) and the 28th with 29th (Spring Bank holiday). We look forward to your company.

Oh, and have I forgotten to mention – YES, CAKE. See you in the tea room at 3pm, it’s cake-o-clock! (It’s there from 10am, but please save me a slice – Death by Chocolate!). So, our official countdown is complete, Roll on the 9th!

A statement from Skyward Flight Training

Following the unexpected communication from the Rougham Estate that our lease / licence was not being renewed Skyward has been addressing all options for its future.

With the final date of operation being the 31st May relocation is extremely difficult. There are very few alternative locations in the area which can accommodate a Training School of this nature. We are pursuing every avenue to find an alternative operating base.

The Flight Training School has a very successful 10 year history at Rougham. Currently there are over 200 members, 95 students, including youngsters starting their career journey in aviation. We have produced pilots now flying internationally with major airlines. Since the April 2021 ‘Covid Release’ we have had 26 newly qualified pilots (with 4 more due to finish their training in the next few weeks).

To relocate this £350,000 plus business overnight is virtually impossible within Suffolk. A very big loss to the community, education and aviation if a new home cannot be found.

Flying is NOT an ‘inclusive’, expensive hobby, a PPL (Private Pilots Licence) is for life and is obtained by individuals from all walks of life. The government recognises the value of an infrastructure of small airfields. Businesses prosper, including International links to the area. Open spaces at airfields are classed as ‘Carbon Neutral to Negative’ under a scheme of ‘How Green is Your Airfield’.

This ‘community space’ is not used just by Skyward but by Suffolk Kite Flyers, Paramotor flyer’s, the Radio Control Model Club plus dog walkers and joggers. We also have private individuals with their hangars and aircraft on the site.

The Skyward business incorporates links to other groups and agencies. We are providing Flight Experiences to the ATC (Air Training Corp) cadets, a Ukrainian refugee who holds a pilot’s licence requires continuance training and a county service agency requires pilot training for their ‘Drone’ staff. This is all part of Skywards community service and link.

The loss of the space, initially for agriculture but with a ‘Developers Option’, removes another major asset (irreplaceable) from our locality. All support (for groups using the airfield) to remain is requested.

Please contact us via our email address office@ skywardflighttraining.co.uk to express your support.

A further statement will be issued in due course.

Last month we showed you how to use our new website and hope it was useful. This month we will go back to the theme of food and look at tricks to help keep food fresh and edible after shopping and cooking. You will find these great ideas and many more to help reduce food waste, save money and reduce your Carbon footprint on our new website. Enjoy.

Freeze leftovers

If you have made too much food for one meal, don’t throw it away, bag it / box it and freeze it. For ease of use, freeze in portions, then label and date the bags.

3

Freeze left over wine

A centimetre or two of wine left in the bottle? Freeze it and use later to add depth to a Bolognese or other sauce.

4

Simple check to test if eggs have gone off

Store food in the right place

Many of us don’t store food in the best place to keep it fresh. Store bread in a cupboard / bread bin / storage bag, keep fruit (except bananas) and vegetables in the fridge, and always store potatoes in a cool dark place.

If you are worried about eggs going off, an easy check is drop them into a bowl of water, if they sink they are fine, if they float don’t eat them. Eggs have a shelf life of 28 days (from date laid to best before date). By law, eggs must reach the final consumer within 21 days from the date they have been laid. This date is known as the ‘Sell-by date’.

After this date, the quality of the egg will deteriorate and if any salmonella

When bananas go brown

When bananas start to go brown, peel and pop them in the freezer in a bag or container. They are great if you blast them in a blender, especially with cream or ice-cream for a delicious banana pudding.

bacteria are present, they could multiply to high levels and could make a person ill. This means that eggs need to be delivered to the consumer at least 7 days before the ‘Best before’ date. The consumer then has seven days to use the eggs at home.

To kill any bacteria, eggs should be cooked thoroughly until both yolk and white are solid. Alternatively they can be used in dishes where they will be fully cooked, such as a cake.

Christ Church MORETON HALL

Dear Friends

On 9th April many people will gather not only at Christ Church Moreton Hall, but across the millions of churches around the world to celebrate the most spectacular event in world history. For on that morning, as the sun was breaking, those who visited the tomb of Jesus Christ found it empty and within a few short moments they were seeing and talking to the risen Lord Jesus.

This event, coupled with the many appearances, conversations, and even fireside meals which happened over the next forty days, convinced those 120 initial disciples that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead and the world had changed.

In the following two thousand years the message of Jesus has been preached on every continent and in every country on Earth with tremendous effect so that, at a conservative estimate, at least one third of the population of the world today know Jesus Christ

in their hearts as Lord and Saviour.

But that spectacular event of seeing Jesus risen from the dead would have meant nothing if it were not for a second miracle. When the disciples went out and preached that Jesus was risen from the dead and that you too could meet Him in your heart, if then, when people prayed and asked Jesus in, nothing had happened Christianity would have died out over two thousand years ago. But the wonder of the Christian faith is that the second miracle happens all the time. When people pray and they invite Jesus to be their Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit does come upon them and Christ reveals Himself to them in ways that only they can understand. Then they know for themselves that Jesus Christ is still alive, active in His church, and changing our world.

As we gather to celebrate this event on 9th April the wonder of this miracle can be shared with you as well.

You too can meet Jesus in your heart and find all the joy, all the confidence, all the peace and all the love that only He can bring you. Because if Jesus has risen from the dead then death itself is defeated and a great and glorious future awaits us beyond the grave where we will definitely meet those who have gone before us and, of course, spend the rest of our immortal lives in the presence of the one who loves us most, Jesus Christ.

Don’t miss out on this glorious opportunity. Join us at Easter and find the one event that will bring true meaning to your life and enable you to live in a way far better than you could ever possibly imagine.

With every good wish

Paul Cowley didn’t have a great start in life. His parents were both alcoholics and he was thrown out of home at just 15. He went to live in a squat and soon got into trouble with the police. Eventually he went to prison. On completing his sentence, Paul went into the army at the age of 21. As he puts it “I went from being bullied at school to being a bully in a uniform”. Paul’s life outside the army wasn’t much better. He was married twice and got divorced twice.

Some years later, his mother became ill with cancer and so he spent 10 days nursing her, until one day she died in his arms. That was yet another painful period in Paul’s life, but it did make him begin to think…

From HMP to MBE

A friend suggested that he tried an Alpha course. He did, and eventually Paul said to God “If you’re up there, and you can make me a better man, let’s give it a go!” From that time on, Paul’s life began to change. He married the woman he’d been living with for eight years. He prayed… and was subsequently able to re-establish contact with his son.

The Paul Cowley of today is very different from that man behind bars. In fact now, he’s a Church of England vicar. Paul now works with prisoners and ex-offenders. Amazingly, he’s been given an MBE for his work.

This story seems perfect for the Easter edition of The Directory. Because Easter is the time of year when Christians celebrate the death

and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus died in your place and in mine; taking upon himself our every sin. But three days after his death, Jesus came back to life. Proving that God really can offer us life after death. However, the good news is, that Jesus wants to change our lives, as well as our destinies. The bible tells us that when we put our faith in him, God’s Spirit comes and lives within us. From that day on, he forgives us for the past, and sets us free from it. Gradually turning our lives around and giving us the hope of a much better future.

That is what Jesus did for Paul Cowley. But it’s what he’d love to do for you. Happy Easter!

More than 350,000 people in Malawi have been displaced in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy. Large rocks carried by floods from hillsides collapsed on homes and shops following record amount of rains. Many makeshift homes could also not withstand the flow of flood water. The situation is very dire, said one aid worker. “There are many casualties, either wounded, missing or dead, and the numbers will only increase in the coming days.”

Over many years, Southgate Church has supported Faith in Action in Malawi, and its work with some of the poorest people in the world. We send regular monies each month and have just had a special collection to send for the relief effort. If you could contribute too, please let us know. Donations can be made to our bank account online at sort code 40-52-40; account no. 00024120.

All monies received will be forwarded to Faith in Action in the UK. Thank you.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole… it’s that time of the year that us golfers have dreamt about, the clocks have changed and it’s THE MASTERS this month.

The Masters, it’s at this time of the year that I get excited for the golf season ahead. I always see The Masters as the start of the season and what better way to do so than with a trip to Augusta National to watch the world’s best players play around what I think is one of the world’s best golf courses. The biggest question is… Who will put that green jacket on this year?

COACHES CORNER – FIRST TEE NERVES

Are you a person that gets a little nervous on the first tee or when you have an important shot to hit during a round? I know I am; every competition I have first tee nerves. This month we will talk about how good planning and routine can help rid you of those nerves.

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE

The first and best way to help you focus on the shot in hand is to have a pre-shot routine. Having this process in your game will allow you to treat any shot within your round the same, so whether it’s a straight forward chip shot or a putt to win a competition your pre-shot routine will help to make sure there are no outside distractions that could hinder your performance.

PLAN YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE

Everyone is different in what they like to do and think about before hitting each shot, below I have highlighted a few areas that might help you plan YOUR best pre-shot routine.

THINKING & PLANNING

In this stage you have to considering a lot of different things:

• Lie

• Club Selection

• Externals Factors

(wind direction etc)

• If you're going to miss where is best? - “Golf is a game of misses. He who misses best wins.” – Ben Hogan

• Type of shot

• TARGET

Make a clear plan at this stage so that from this point on you are 100% committed to the shot you have planned.

PHYSICAL REHEARSALS

In this stage it's not just a case of making perfect practice swings. It's all about getting a feel for the shot you are about to play and the type of movement you are going to need to produce to get the outcome you have planned.

SEE THE SHOT

During these rehearsals try and picture the shot in your minds eye. Make this image as detailed as possible, the more elements of the shot you can clearly see the better your rehearsals will be.

GO TIME!

You have planned the shot out and made your rehearsals so now its time to TRUST the plan and yourself. Take a couple deep breaths in through your nose and slowly exhale through your mouth or nose.

Have a great month, enjoy the first major of the year and getting out on course and playing this great game. I will speak to you all next month.

This will ease the tension in your body getting you ready to perform. If any negative thoughts creep in at this stage, start over. At this point you could introduce a trigger. This could be verbal like “Commit” depending on what works best for you.

From this point on be confident and align yourself to your target and make a committed swing knowing you have done all you can. This process makes it harder for negative thoughts to come into your mind, and I am not saying that it will work every shot, but it might make the difference when you really need it.
