Dear Alumni and Friends of Morehead State University: As most of you know by now, several counties within MSU’s service region have suffered tremendous damage, and unfortunately loss of life, as a result of the recent tornadoes and storms.

West Liberty in Morgan County, where the town took a direct hit from an EF-3 tornado, has been the focus of national news attention. Areas all across the Commonwealth and neighboring states have been seriously impacted.

As the news of the extensive damage spread, we began to receive calls and e-mails from many alumni, students and parents, and concerned citizens about ways to help. As you know, MSU has a long history of serving the people of Eastern Kentucky, and I can assure you that the University will do all that we can to assist the people in these affected areas with the manpower and resources available to us.

Morehead State University’s volunteer efforts will be coordinated through the Center for Regional Engagement (CRE). The CRE also is serving as a drop-off point for donations of relief supplies at its office, located at 320 University Street.

We have established a website at www.moreheadstate.edu/msucares to provide information to our students and employees who are affected by the storms, as well as to provide the MSU community with the most current information and opportunities to help our people and our region.

Financial donations can be made in a number of ways to the American Red Cross and other local relief organizations.

Most importantly, I ask that you keep the people in our region in your thoughts and prayers. This is a very difficult time for so many who have lost not only their homes, but are dealing with the loss of family and/or friends and neighbors. If we all pull together, consolidate our resources, and work shoulder to shoulder, we can help our people overcome the adversity they now face.

We rested in the shade of Camden-Carroll Library, its familiar, yet austere façade still witnessing the decades, still mocking time. We skipped rocks at Eagle Lake as I did then for midweek reprieves. The lake’s calm surface rippled with the wind; and, as I come to learn, like life, belied its murky depths.

I watched Kassi’s reflection on the water’s edge glistening with youth, and I thought of what the poets said: that ‘youth is, after all, just a moment;’ that youth is ‘our salad days;’ that it is ‘such stuff that dreams are made of;’ ‘some blossom saved from the mire, some rebellious ember to fan into a fire;’ and a time of ‘running against the wind.’ I was happy then, but I would have been ecstatic if I had known that time would bring me to Kassi.”

Carol Johnson (67), a native of Rowan County, is a wife, mother and grandmother. She and her husband, Wendell (68), have two adult children, Sean and Michelle Roberts (97). She has spent her professional career at Morehead State University where she has served as an assistant to seven presidents. As the University celebrates its 125th anniversary, we are reflecting on the history of the institution and inviting individuals to share their thoughts. We asked Johnson questions about her time in the president’s office. Here’s how she remembers the seven presidents she has served.

James W. “Jim” Bell, a Lawrence County native, has traveled extensively, lived on both coasts and in 20 states, and has more than 50 years’ experience as an engineer. He has interesting stories to tell about his work, some of which could fit in a James Bond movie.

When he graduated from then Louisa High School at the age of 15, and headed off to college for his first semester, Bell believes he was not adequately prepared for an engineering curriculum.

That experience created a desire in him to see others be successful.

To ensure this happens, he has established two scholarship endowments for future MSU students. He found the charitable gift annuity to be the ideal planned gift method for him. With this type of gift annuity, a donor can transfer cash or securities to the MSU Foundation and they will be paid a fixed amount for life.

The remaining balance of the transfer passes to MSU when the contract ends. The Bell scholarships will make a lasting impact on students from Eastern Kentucky in perpetuity.

Many students who have walked the Morehead State University campus have spent time in Breckinridge Hall. Today, this four-story classroom and office building, houses stateof-the-art classrooms, audio and video production studios, a digital broadcast center, facilities for the student newspaper and television station, a flexible theatre and multimedia auditorium, and areas named for individuals who were dedicated to students.

“Breck” is home to the Department of Communication, Media and Leadership Studies, two programs from the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, foreign languages, and Morehead State Public Radio where students continue to gain hands-on broadcasting experience.

Passing through three generations, Browning Orchard Apples were known across central and northeastern Kentucky.

Fall harvest drew visitors from near and far and the Annual Browning Orchard Apple Festival was a highlight of the season.

In 2008, the orchard was donated to MSU, continuing the Browning family’s commitment to the region. A new sign at the entrance identifies the area as the Morehead State University Education and Field Station.
