LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER

WEST HALL

The expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center will secure Las Vegas at the world’s premier business destination for decades to come.

The 1.4 million SF expansion includes 600,000 SF of exhibit space and 150,000 SF of meeting room space housed under a beautiful ribbon roof that was inspired by the Mint Las Vegas.

The design for the LVCC Expansion is part of the LVCC’s ongoing relationship to the larger phenomenon of the City. The design begins with visual reach and experience that unifies the campus across the distance from the Strip to the South Hall. Access and program punctuate the campus between those two endpoints; nodes made cohesive by a “Ribbon” of circulation.

Echoing the region’s mountains, the Ribbon is amplified at significant points to unite, announce entry and celebrate the act of gathering; an orienting path for the eyes, the feet and the mind. The Ribbon is a wayfinding landscape of seamless connection and graphic activation from end to end, continuous and customizable to announce and activate the LVCC and make it a visible player from Las Vegas Boulevard and its hotels; an artery of Vegas experience piped straight from the Strip. The project also included a Boring Co Loop station on site.

HARRY REID INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SATELLITE

D GATES

This project is an effort to reinstate the passion of passenger travel originally associated with the civicscaled railroad terminals of the early 20th century. Major projects such as Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and Union Station in New York City celebrated the arrival and departure of the rail traveler and at the same time represented a gateway to the metropolis. The Satellite D Gates aspire to this earlier ethos, moving passengers through civic-scaled spaces in a structure that overtly expresses its function as a destination airport terminal.

DMV EAST SAHARA SERVICE CENTER

Primary considerations in designing this facility were customer flow, access to services, visibility and safety of employees, and providing a comfortable place for all. The lobby is the centerpiece of the facility with customer service desks, testing and camera functions surrounding the space. The main entrance is positioned at one end of the long axis of the lobby to maintain ease of movement, clear visual access to signage and queuing displays. Upon entering the lobby, the customer is able to quickly locate the customer service windows, as well as get a sense if the facility is busy or not. Designing for this immediate understanding has shown to reduce stress in the customer.

SPRINGS PRESERVE VISITOR CENTER

The Las Vegas Springs Preserve is a 180-acre cultural attraction developed to commemorate Las Vegas’ dynamic heritage. It also provides a vision for a sustainable future. The primary challenge was to convey the cultural heritage of the site by means of exhibits and interpretive media. The Springs Preserve is an interactive environment that highlights the heritage of the springs—a source of water for Native Americans living here thousands of years ago.

PORT OF LONG BEACH

Facilities consisting of 3 buildings—Pier A, Pier T, and Pier G. Through collaboration with Hanjin Shipping, TSK understood the operational process and successfully designed a terminal in response to the shipping company’s goal of increased productivity. Compared to Hanjin’s previous 40-acre terminal, Pier A had a 60 percent increase in lane number with a 138 percent increase in container movement. Pier T addressed the stringent physical and functional requirements of a massive industrial facility without neglecting its users. Through thoughtful design, a highly efficient complex and pleasant work environment are merged together to accommodate both terminal employees and truck drivers who use the terminal.

For Pier G, the design team carefully selected building construction materials to maximize recycled contents and reduce use of virgin material resources. The 30,000 square-foot operations building is the hub of a super-efficient container terminal. Carefully designed circulation patterns and naturally lit spaces highlight the design of this building.

HOOVER DAM VISITOR CENTER

The Hoover Dam Visitor Center Remodel project includes the remodel of roughly 10,000 SF on the Theater Level of the Hoover Dam Visitor Center, excluding the theaters themselves. There were several goals for this project which included modernizing the aesthetic, brightening the space, improving the acoustics, and utilizing durable, easily cleanable materials. The renovation included new interior finishes for the floors (terrazzo), walls (acoustic paneling), and restrooms (FRL and epoxy). In addition to the finishes, the existing wall murals were replaced with new images printed directly onto the acoustic wall panels, the open staircase and railing was also replaced to update the aesthetic and comply with current accessibility requirements, and the ticket booths and security booth were updated to match the new aesthetic of the space.

DATE ST.

BUILDINGS

Building 100 was built in 1941 as part of an electrolytic manganese pilot plant, but architecturally reflects the masonry and clay tile roof construction of worker homes. Building 200 was built in 1931 and served as the vehicle repair garage during construction of the Hoover Dam.

NORTH BUTTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The courts building is situated at the south end of the site creating a strong urban edge. The primary public circulation is located along the south elevation of the building providing views and access to daylight. The elevation is articulated by a series of double height, stone clad window seats that project out over the widened sidewalk that is shaded by large specimen trees. The form of the courthouse is informed by climatic, civic and functional requirements that create a distinctive facility that is a reflection of Chico’s rich and unique culture and environment. SOUTHWEST JUVENILE COURTHOUSE

This standalone, ground up courthouse sits on a low hill as an addition to a judicial campus with a sheriff’s department, adult jail, juvenile detention center and main courthouse. As part of an operational cost-savings strategy, the courthouse is attached directly to the existing detention center, eliminating officer and transportation costs. It houses delinquency and dependency courtrooms with separate holding areas, court operations and administration space, children’s waiting area, judicial chambers, and support space. The result is a fiscally responsible solution satisfying the county’s needs.

MOHAVE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

The building takes advantage of the natural topography of the sloping site by placing all public spaces slightly above the natural grade level and recessing a lower service level into the slope. A raised entry plaza provides access to a reception area and a multi-purpose meeting room. A secured corridor system, restricted to sheriff station personnel and escorted visitors, provides access to the rest of the facility. Central records, administrative offices, community relations offices, detective’s offices and an employee break room are located on this level.

TRUCKEE MEADOWS FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT STATION NO. 33

The design for this station centered on a few key strategies to improve the quality of life in the facility as well as take advantage of key environmental conditions. Overall, the building is oriented on the site to best utilize the existing site topography and maintain naturally existing storm water flow. This is a critical issue in the Truckee Meadows region and allows for the separation of pavement generated off flow from natural flows. In addition to ensuring that contaminants were directed to appropriate storm water channels, maintaining the natural topography allowed for the majority of the site to be maintained as natural vegetation rather than artificially irrigated.
