STUDENT UNION

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) presented the design team with a unique challenge for the design of a prototypical student union building to be constructed on each of their three campuses simultaneously. Currently the students do not have a place where they can gather, study, work on group projects, relax and enjoy a meal, or simply have a place to spend time between classes.

KIRK KERKORIAN MEDICAL EDUCATION BUILDING

NEVADA HEALTH AND BIOSCIENCE CORPORATION

The Kirk Kerkorian Medical Education Building at UNLV is planned as the first building for a proposed 9-acre academic health center for UNLV, located in the heart of the Las Vegas Medical District. The facility, approximately 130,000 gross square feet, will serve as the permanent home of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, and is designed to accommodate a class size of 120 students. To support long term growth, the design allows for an expansion to increase the class size to 180 students with minimal disruption to the overall building.

The program is designed to support the school’s forward-thinking approach to the curriculum and includes training spaces for clinical skills, simulation and anatomy - both virtual and cadaveric dissection - classrooms of various sizes which support problem-based learning, administrative offices, and a learning resources center.

Community life spaces are also included, such as a cafe, a student lounge, and the forum, which is the heart of the building and will enable various events and lectures to be held at the school.

STUDENT UNION

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA LAS VEGAS

The UNLV Student Union creates an environment where students can gather informally outside of the classroom, campus organizations can meet, events can be staged, and the public can visit. A major design challenge was to respond to the predominantly commuter based university population by creating an environment that attracts students to the campus and encourages their involvement in student life at UNLV.

VERNA AND PETER DAUTERIVE HALL

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

The project was designed and constructed on a tight schedule with particular focus on construction occurring during the summer break between college class semesters. The high quality of construction drawings was noted by the contractor as contributing in part to their success in completing the project on time with no change orders and only a handful of Requests for Information.

LOS ANGELES AUXILIARY SERVICES CENTER

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY Located at the heart of the CSULA college campus, the CSULA Golden Eagle has helped to refocus an academic environment that includes many architectural styles. The Golden Eagle serves as a gathering place for students and faculty. Its vibrant colors bring visual excitement to the campus, and its innovative form acts as a campus icon.

TECHNOLOGY LEARNING CENTER

WEST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE The West Los Angeles College Technology Learning Center is part of a campus improvement package consisting of 8 individual projects with a total construction budget of $29.3 million. The eight projects include two new buildings, the Technology Learning Center and Watson Center, and renovations to existing facilities and site improvements on the existing campus.

TENANT IMPROVEMENT

UNLV SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

In 2015, the Nevada Legislature approved funding for a startup medical school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The overarching plans for the School of Medicine are to design and construct a new building to accommodate 240 students, faculty and support staff. The anticipated timeline for the permanent facility is five years. In the interim, to meet the accreditation requirements and to begin accepting and educating students, TSK designed and provided construction administration services for a temporary facility within one of UNLV’s existing buildings on the Shadow Lane Campus in downtown Las Vegas.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

LONG BEACH COLLEGE

The Library and Learning Resource Center enables local Long Beach students to transfer to four-year institutions by providing learning opportunities not previously available. Technology-rich spaces and a dedicated staff permits the college to teach, train and inspire neighborhood students to be successful in higher education.

CSN HEALTH SCIENCE BUILDING

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA In 2012, the College of Southern Nevada selected TSK to renovate and design an addition to the oldest building on its campus on West Charleston Boulevard. The original building had been renovated and added onto four times previously and had a mixed material palette and disparate design elements. The building renovation was to occur in the center of the building while the east and west wings of the building were to remain occupied and functional during construction.​

PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDING

SANTA MONICA COLLEGE

The Physical Education and Athletics Offices Building was designed as a vertical addition to the existing athletic classroom building in the crowded Santa Monica College campus. Located between the track and field and the college gymnasium, the offices oversee activities on the outdoor fields, even the conference room is used as a skybox during games.

CSN SCIENCE BUILDING

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA A classroom building located on the College of Southern Nevada Charleston Campus that houses a variety of science disciplines. The L-shaped building contains 16 teaching labs, 17 lecture classrooms and a distance education studio. The facility is complete with faculty offices, administration areas and student spaces. The building exhibits sustainable practices in architecture and the sciences. Most notably, the design limits the impact of the Las Vegas climate through the use of shading elements that minimize the daily heat gain of the facility. This building is home to the Departments of Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences as well as School of Science and Mathematics and School of Education, Behavioral and Social Sciences offices.

CSULA STUDENT UNION

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Tate Snyder Kimsey provided programming and bridging design for the new student union. The design build portion was completed by Barnhardt/HMC and opened in 2006. The project was built on the site of the existing CSULA Student Union as a companion piece to the CSULA Auxillary Services Building, which Tate Snyder Kimsey designed in 2001. The student union contains a theater, fitness center, meeting rooms, food court, student organization offices, café and casual gathering spaces. It is designed and oriented along a new student plaza for outdoor events such as concerts, speeches and student rally’s.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY BUILDING

CERRITOS COLLEGE

This unique facility serves three separate groups - Cerritos College, Northwood University and the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association. The 10,500 square foot structure provides classrooms and offices for both universities, as well as training facilities for the car dealers association. The main vehicle showroom and student training space is viewable from the exterior, and faces the prominent southeast corner of the site. The space is large enough for the display of vehicles, and also for large groups of students or industry members. The transportation center was envisioned to give students real life exposure to their chosen profession and provide opportunities for student placements within the industry.

USC TAPER HALL RENOVATION

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

This project had a tight schedule due to the limitations of the summer construction schedule on campus. Working with user groups and project managers, TSK administered a tightly regulated schedule to foster an efficient decision-making process. The result was a project on time and under budget. The program called for the conversion of classroom and computer lab space into numerous faculty offices for an expanding program in a ‘70s era facility. This design established the material/color palette for future phases of renovation.

UNR COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA , RENO This complex is oriented around a center courtyard and serves as the Southern Nevada headquarters for the University’s Cooperative Extension. The facility houses five classrooms, faculty offices, nutrition lab, herbarium, diagnostic lab and print shop.
