GATTON COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

To better reflect the cutting-edge educational program taught within its walls, the Gatton College of Business and Economics sought to transform its 1963, four-story building into an impressive icon of the College’s cutting-edge programs. The new, technology-rich environment was designed to support a “world ready” business education and support future growth needs. Tiered classrooms feature state-of-the-art projection systems, while smaller break-out rooms offer peer-to-peer learning.

An impressive 500-seat auditorium, Executive Education and Conference Center, and MBA Center are also included. At the building’s core, a large atrium is the active social heart of the building.

The LEED Gold Gatton project incorporates several unique sustainable features including a large, central atrium flooded in soft, natural light. A 100-year-old burr oak tree that had to be removed for construction was immortalized inside the building accenting the interior and becoming a beautiful table for the Executive Board Room. The spacious atrium and cafe space has become a popular stop for University of Kentucky students across multiple departments and disciplines.

NORTHWEST CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE

The redeveloped campus is primed to become a “knowledge hub,” a space that challenges the traditional notion of what a campus is. The revitalized campus brings together the worlds of education and economic growth to create an academic space with access to residential, retail, office, and transportation. It has become a destination for knowledge, innovation, and community.

The project was completed in phases to ensure student safety and program continuity. All renovations match the existing design and construction standards—with a modern twist. The team utilized programming and space planning exercises to optimize the campus layout for classrooms, staff spaces, support spaces, science labs, computer labs, theater, on-boarding center, library and learning commons areas, and collaboration zones. The project will achieve LEED certification.

The scope of work includes a new early college high school building and additional campus space of 50,000 square feet, a new 175,000-square foot building, a new 75,000-square foot building, renovations and repairs for multiple buildings, and approximately 250,000 square feet of building demolition.

MUSIC REHEARSAL HALL

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY

Western Kentucky University’s new, LEED Silver fine arts center provides two rehearsal spaces—one for instrumental music and one for choral. Acoustics were paramount to the design. The choral room is structurally isolated from the rest of the building to prevent sound transmission. Acoustical panels, reflectors and drapes provide acoustical controls and tuning capabilities in both rehearsal spaces. A new Director’s suite is also included, along with three sheet music libraries for orchestra, band, and choir music. Custom storage spaces were designed for instruments, uniforms, equipment, and choral risers. The new building also features an unusually large elevator sized to accommodate a five-octave marimba.

Located on a karst site, the building features an aggressive stormwater management system that uses a 40,000-gallon aquifer beneath the building’s driveway to treat storm water. Low-flow plumbing fixtures were used to minimize water consumption. LowVOC construction materials were specified to protect air quality and regional and recycled building materials were used whenever possible throughout the building. A shower was installed to encourage bicycle transportation. Windows provide views outdoors and infuse daylight into all regularly occupied areas of the building. A white roof reduces the heat-island effect and minimizes the building’s burden on the energy-efficient mechanical system.

STUDENT UNION PROTOTYPE

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

The College of Southern Nevada presented the design team with a unique challenge for the design of a prototypical student union building to be constructed on each of their three campuses simultaneously.

Our primary considerations in designing this facility were solving the above concerns, while enhancing the campus and student culture experience by achieving the following goals: Simplify on-site circulation; Define the main entry; Provide transparency between the commons and exterior / campus; Create comfortable space for students to gather; Daylight the high volume and internal spaces including the commons, main corridor, and meeting rooms (controlled); Provide meeting space with access to the exterior, prefunction space, and to the kitchen for catering purposes; Clad the building in durable materials; Design a building that will be the focal point of campus.

The single story building has high-volume commons and food service seating space. Primary considerations in the design of the facility are student flow, access to food services and student services, functionality and access to the meeting rooms, and providing a comfortable place for students to gather, as well as a focal point of the campus.

STUDENT UNION

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, LAS VEGAS

The student union is a focal point for the campus community and an interactive connection to the public in Las Vegas. The building creates an environment where UNLV students can gather informally outside of the classroom, campus organizations can meet, events can be staged, and the public can visit. A major design challenge was to respond to the predominantly commuter based university population by creating an environment that attracts students to the campus and encourages their involvement in student life at UNLV.

The ground level supports public activity with dining areas, student activities and services, a 300-seat theater, and retail spaces. Semipublic functions such as a computer lab, computer help center, student lounges, meeting spaces, and a ballroom are located on the second level. Offices for student organizations share the third level.

On the north elevation, a 20 foot balcony stretches the length of the building, providing an overlook of an existing plaza area. To the south, a large courtyard is shaded with fabric canopies. This shading structure draws people toward the building, extends the dining space outdoors, and creates a stage for special events. The west half of the courtyard is terraced with 15-inch high concrete benches to provide amphitheater-style seatings.

STUDENT UNION

WEATHERFORD COLLEGE

The new student union provides an inclusive, student-centered hub that consolidates essential services, gathering spaces, and amenities into a single, highly visible destination. The building brings together advising, enrollment, financial aid, testing, dining, wellness, and veterans services.

Architecturally, the building balances civic presence with campus connectivity. Large gathering spaces and dining areas are strategically layered throughout the building to activate multiple levels and encourage interaction, while shared lounges and meeting spaces support collaboration and informal learning. A signature cantilevered dining terrace and expressive structural elements, including V-shaped columns forming a subtle “W,” create a distinct identity that ties the building to Weatherford College’s legacy. Extensive glazing and open circulation reinforce visual connections to the campus, allowing the building’s energy and activity to be visible from key approach points.

More than a collection of programs, the Student Union serves as a place-making catalyst for the campus. By unifying student services and social spaces in a single, centrally located facility, the design strengthens daily campus life and supports Weatherford College’s mission of care, access, and community engagement.

SOUTH HALL

EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY

From the first moment students stepped into the building, South Hall made the clear statement that Eastern Kentucky University was dedicated to enrich the overall quality of student life on campus. South Hall provides a creative approach to campus housing for upperclassmen—not just with quality suites, but with an overall environment that promotes community among its residents. Common spaces include rooms that enhance academics, such as meeting rooms and study spaces, but also interior and exterior gathering spaces to enhance social life, including a one-of-a-kind “iron chef” kitchen.

Constructed of insulated concrete forms (ICF) clad in brick, this efficient thermal barrier coupled with the roof’s high solar reflectance index (SRI) roofing membrane reduce the demand on the HVAC system. More than half of the building’s materials were sourced within 500 miles. The highly efficient HVAC system features a dedicated outside air unit with energy recovery for providing ventilation air to the entire building. Water saving fixtures help reduce water consumption by 45 percent compared to similar buildings.

Celebrated as EKU’s first ever LEED building, South Hall ultimately achieved LEED Gold setting a new standard for sustainable design on campus.

OGDEN COLLEGE HALL

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY

The creation of Ogden College Hall transformed the science facilities on Western Kentucky University’s main campus. A new 82,500 sf laboratory building was designed to reflect the aesthetic of surrounding campus architecture and features laboratory facilities for chemistry, biology, physics, and astronomy departments. It replaced two aging facilities constructed in the 1960s and 1970s.

In addition, Ogden College Hall houses the dean’s suite, a 300-seat auditorium, and student gathering spaces. Putting science on display was central to the design of this new facility. The building itself—as well as art and exhibits—illustrate the curriculum and the College’s research initiatives to create a showplace for scientific exploration and discovery.

Sustainability and safety join forces in this new science lab. By lowering the fume hood stops to 12 inches, adding auto sash closers, and maintaining the volume of air intake by the fume hoods at a constant rate, this building is not only safer for student use but it saves $80,000 per year in energy. This strategy, combined with a highly reflective roof, regional materials selection, and low-emitting finishes, have enabled this innovative building to earn LEED Gold.

Focused on occupant health and wellness, the building also earned WELL V2 Gold, making it the first educational laboratory nationwide in this category.

Seven classrooms were combined into two large labs which removed barriers to create an environment with a more connected learning experience. The renovation also includes new walls, floors and ceiling finish out, relocation of data cables, and a new mechanical system.

MEMORIAL COLISEUM

Originally opened in 1950 as a tribute to Kentuckians who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, Memorial Coliseum has been fully modernized to serve as a state-of-the-art home for UK’s women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, and STUNT teams.

This $82 million renovation is the largest investment in women’s sports in University of Kentucky history. The project enhances the fan experience and athlete facilities while preserving the historic character of this iconic campus landmark. Upgrades include new seating, air conditioning, improved lighting, a center-hung scoreboard, modern locker rooms, and updated support spaces. KROGER FIELD

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

The transformation of Kroger Field was designed with a clear, overarching goal: to elevate the gameday experience. New outdoor plazas and green spaces welcome spectators. The redesigned exterior better compliments the surrounding campus architecture and new entry gates lead visitors through concourses with enhanced concessions, restrooms, and amenities.

Inside the stadium bowl, the total seating capacity was actually reduced to redesign a portion of the bowl into premium suites and clubs including outdoor club and loge seating to amplify the excitement and bring fans closer to the action.

A new press / gameday operations level was added to the bowl and the playing surface was replaced with new synthetic turf. New locker rooms, equipment rooms, coaches offices, recruiting/multipurpose space and a students-only endzone further elevate the experience and support the recruitment of high-caliber players.

This project earned LEED Silver, making it the first LEED-certified competition venue in the Southeastern Conference in any sport. In 2022, the turf had reached the end of its performance life. The playing field was upgraded to a slit-film turf system with monofilament synthetic turf, which is currently being used in multiple NFL stadiums and practice facilities.

Adjacent to Kroger Field and Nutter Field House, the facility looks out onto two outdoor practice fields surrounded by turf training areas and a training stair.

Inside, visitors are greeted by an impressive, graphic-rich lobby with showcase spaces for uniforms and players as well as interactive displays. A 15,000 square foot weight room features a cutting-edge sound system and custom workout equipment. Outside the weight room, the “training table” offers three meals a day and a Gatorade Fuel Bar offers customized shakes, drinks and snacks. The new team locker room is personalized with player photos and giant graphics, its own barber shop and an adjoining video game and billiard lounge.

The Football Training Center is only the third LEED Silver facility in the SEC and showcases the University of Kentucky’s leadership in green building and its long-term commitment to sustainable design. The project optimized energy performance by using high efficiency HVAC systems along with increased thermal performance of the building envelope. Indoor air quality was particularly important in this environment for high-performance athletes, and materials were selected to minimize or eliminate off-gassing.

MEMORIAL STADIUM

TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY

Tarleton State University invested in an expansion to Memorial Stadium to increase seating to 9,000; to improve the fan experience; and to modernize operational facilities and increase efficiencies. The complex originally opened in 1951 and hadn’t seen a largescale renovation since 1977. The latest project, completed in 2019, established a new “face” for the university and football program.

The new four-story tower is a dramatic improvement to the aesthetics and stature of the facility and created a beautiful, iconic, and exciting entry that reflects the character and history of the campus.

One of the key goals of the project was to improve the game-day atmosphere and support an already spirited fan base. The university viewed the design as a recruiting tool to bolster a strong football program. To realize the goal, the expansion included the relocation of the home grandstands—with new entrances, creation of new premium spaces, and construction of a new press box—to the west side. The new home-side structure features a variety of game day experience options that include premium seats, a club level with private suites, and indoor and outdoor seating.
