locations throughout MD, PA, VA, GA, and DC. E4H has created standards for this clinic and rolled out fertility centers at nine locations.
The Rockville, MD project involved full design services for 50,000SF relocation and expansion to their largest IVF lab and surgery center in the Mid-Atlantic. Amongst the many project initiatives, a significant effort was directed towards improving the overall experience for patients and workspaces for staff.
Zero VOC finishes, increased quantity and privacy of sub-wait areas, use of technology for self-check in, and video monitors in procedure rooms were complimenting project goals. Curved walls and access to natural light make for a dynamic and patient-friendly environment. The patient-focused interior design considered the high stress infertility can bring and featured a calming palette. New finishes were selected with low volatile organic compounds including mastics and sealants which can interfere with reproductive health. The new space focused on improving the overall experience for patients, many of whom need to visit the facility daily to be monitored. Waiting rooms are flooded with natural light and feature custom built in benches and a variety of other seating options divided by translucent panels. Floating custom beverage stations offer tea and water to waiting patients.
The 22,000SF Chesterbrook, PA project includes outpatient surgery, laboratory space, cryogenic storage, exam rooms, collection rooms, and administrative/office space. The interior design creates a patient-focused environment that fosters a sense of tranquility for patients undergoing fertility treatments, a process that is both physically and emotionally exhausting. Amongst the many project initiatives, a significant effort was directed towards improving the overall experience for patients and workspaces for staff. Special consideration was given to office space ensuring that staff had natural light, area for breakout meetings, and a built-in coffee bar.
Focusing on material health was a critical factor in making design decisions, impacting both people and the planet. To eliminate the negative effects that traditional materials have on reproductive health, the design team selected low- and zero-VOC finishes, mastics, and sealants. All carpet tiles meet Cradle to Cradle guidelines, meaning they have been designed and assessed for environmental and social responsibility across material health, material reuse, renewable energy, carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. The carpets are carbon neutral and are manufactured in a carbon neutral manufacturing facility.
The field of infertility continues to evolve rapidly and is becoming less cost prohibitive. The client offers a Shared Help Discount Program for patients based on income and insurance coverage, or lack thereof. This program is offered to patients regardless of marital status or living arrangements, helps to reduce barriers to access for patients seeking fertility treatment.

Chesterbrook, PA
Rockville, MD
This New York City based 10,100SF fertility procedure and monitoring suite is located on the 5th and 6th floor of a 15-story medical office building, built in 1962 in midtown Manhattan. The program includes a procedure room, IVF Lab, five prep and recovery bays, Andrology/Endocrinology Lab, Collection rooms, Cryo Storage, and Exam Rooms. Both the size and the geometry of the New York City building footprint provided some challenges for the typical program.
The design team was tasked with fitting 12,000SF of program into the 10,000SF floor plate. The narrow building footprint made certain adjacencies challenging to plan. The design team was able to maximize the space and locate the Procedure room, IVF Lab, Transfer room, and Cryo Storage adjacent to one another to optimize operational practices. In addition, the design team had to coordinate the design and location of a rooftop unit, generator, panels, and ATS on the 5th floor terrace, adjacent to the tenant space.
The interiors team worked with Shady Grove Fertility to provide a clean elegant space with strong lines, soft hues, ethereal fabrics and unique accent lighting throughout to create a unique Shady Grove experience that embodies the look and feel of New York City.
