LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Mariner Family and Friends, With gratitude and hope, we celebrate 60 years of educating hearts and minds at Moreau Catholic High School! This anniversary year has been special for so many reasons, including the opening of our new performing arts space dedicated to Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC, the resurrection of some Holy Cross traditions, and the continued growth and success of our incredible Mariner family. We are thriving, rooted in our mission and our love for our students, and we are constantly striving to be better as we set the tone for our bright future.

Our Founder, Blessed Basil Moreau, shared this key idea which is a foundational perspective on Holy Cross education: “How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless.” So many things are changing so quickly in our world today! As an educational institution, we must evolve and adapt. Yet despite shifts in technologies, tools, facilities, and understanding, our “cultivation of the heart” is the same as always. We teach through relationships. We know and love our students. We care about the whole person, and we walk alongside each other and accompany our family members through their educational journey. We don’t lead or teach or coach from a distance - we navigate challenges together. For six decades and counting, we have provided opportunities for our students to be informed, formed, and transformed daily, knowing that our efforts will help them become the best version of themselves.

So, while we strive to be innovative in our instructional practices and provide the most updated, modernized facilities and best resources for our students, we also hold fast to our Holy Cross values that provide an enduring anchor for us. We will always strive to be family, build respect, bring hope, and educate the hearts and minds of our beloved Mariners. This will not change.

Despite the complex, sometimes chaotic, and challenging times in which we live, it is our joy and privilege to lead the way and prepare our students for better times than these. As Resurrection people, we rise to this challenge with strength, unity, hope, and Mariner pride. We remember what Brother Donald would always say with a smile: “We are all in this together.”

How lucky are we to be together on this journey! Looking back with fondness to 1965, being present with gratitude today, and looking forward with hope to our students as the future, we could not ask for better partners in mission. Thank you to our faculty, staff, coaches, and administrators who work tirelessly and joyfully to cultivate the minds and hearts of our beloved students. Thank you to our Brothers and past Holy Cross educators for building our foundation and stewarding our mission. Thank you to our alumni, alumni parents, and faithful friends for continually supporting us and engaging in our ongoing transformation. We are blessed to be family.

EDUCATING HEARTS AND MINDS: A 60-YEAR LEGACY On Friday, October 3, 2025, our school community—joined by members of the Board of Trustees, the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Terry Lee, Director of School Sponsorship, and many alumni and Mariner families—gathered in this sacred space to honor St. Francis of Assisi on his feast day and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Moreau Catholic High School.

This year’s theme, Educating Hearts and Minds, resonates deeply with both the spirit of St. Francis and the legacy our community has cultivated over the past six decades. For sixty years, Moreau Catholic has shaped not only minds through rigorous academic formation, but also hearts grounded in faith, service, and compassion.

As we mark this milestone, we honor those who laid the foundation on which we stand, those who faithfully uphold our mission today, and the generations of Mariners who will carry this legacy into the future—its stewardship now entrusted to us.

IFT DAY Welcoming Frosh Into the Moreau Catholic Family

Each year, Moreau Catholic hosts IFT Day—Information, Formation, Transformation—to welcome all 9th graders into the Holy Cross community and prepare them for their Mariner journey.

Information Students receive key guidance about academics, campus life, expectations, and the many opportunities available at Moreau Catholic.

This foundation helps them feel confident and supported as they begin high school.

Formation Through small-group activities and conversations led by student ambassadors, faculty, and campus ministers, Frosh build connections with their peers and begin exploring their own values, strengths, and hopes for their four years ahead.

Transformation The day concludes with activities that invite students to reflect on how they will grow at Moreau—academically, socially, and spiritually—and how they can contribute to the school community.

IFT Day introduces students to the heart of our Holy Cross mission: educating both minds and hearts. It sets the tone for a high school experience rooted in belonging, purpose, and personal growth.

HONORING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Moreau Catholic’s 2025 National Merit Scholars Moreau Catholic High School is proud to celebrate nine outstanding students recognized by the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program—an honor earned by only a fraction of the 1.3 million juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT in 2024.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST Congratulations to Mahima R. ’26 (pictured center), whose exceptional score placed her among the top 1% of test takers in California and one of just 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide.

Mahima now advances in the competition for National Merit Finalist status and scholarship consideration— an achievement that reflects her dedication, talent, and academic excellence.

Building Bridges Across the Pacific Welcoming Ichifuna High School This semester, as part of our annual school exchange, Moreau Catholic High School welcomed ten students, two faculty members, and the Principal of Ichifuna High School from Funabashi, Japan, continuing a partnership that has been more than three decades in the making. As Hayward’s sister city, Funabashi shares a special connection with our community, and Ichifuna remains Moreau Catholic’s longstanding sister school.

A TRADITION OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE For over thirty years, our schools have participated in an annual two-week cultural exchange program designed

to foster global understanding and friendship. During their visit, the Ichifuna students attended classes alongside our Mariners, joined us at athletic events, VAPA performances, and club activities, and immersed themselves in daily campus life.

LEARNING THROUGH CONNECTION These interactions offered meaningful opportunities for both groups of students to learn from one another— sharing customs, practicing language skills, and discovering common ground.

Many formed strong bonds, creating friendships that often extend well beyond the exchange itself.

A LIVING EXPRESSION OF OUR MISSION The program reflected Moreau Catholic’s commitment to preparing students to become leaders in a global community. By engaging with peers from another culture, our students broadened their worldviews and strengthened the values of empathy, curiosity, and understanding.

We were proud to once again host our Ichifuna partners and continue a tradition that enriches both of our school communities.

A JOYFUL REUNION AT THIS YEAR’S HOMECOMING ALUMNI TAILGATE This year’s Homecoming Alumni Tailgate was all about good vibes, great people, and plenty of school spirit. Alumni from near and far showed up ready to reconnect, swap stories, and enjoy this year’s Homecoming game.

The event had something for everyone—tasty food, music, and plenty of chances to catch up with old friends or meet fellow Mariners for the first time. Many alumni took a stroll around campus and even toured the new Br. Donald Blauvelt, CSC Performing Arts Center. They enjoyed delicious food, music, raffles, and premier seating up close to all the action of a great football game…an experience that captured the heart of Homecoming.

REUNION HIGHLIGHTS Reunions bring all the nostalgia— laughs, stories, and those “remember when...?” moments that never get old. When people share fond memories, it’s as if no time has passed, and there’s nothing better than catching up with old friends who have been part of their lives for years. These gatherings are a chance to relive the good times and reconnect with the people who made those years unforgettable.

As 2026 approaches, it’s worth considering the opportunity to chair one’s own class reunion. The fun and memories that come from it can truly be unforgettable!

The event’s highlight was the strong sense of community—old classmates reunited, new connections were made, and alumni pride was unmistakable. This year’s tailgate was a wonderful reminder of the lasting bonds formed here and the shared traditions that continue to bring our Mariner family together.

FALL SPORTS RECAP The 2025 Fall season was a highly successful season for our Moreau Catholic Mariners. Five of our programs - Boys & Girls Cross Country, Girls Golf, Girls Water Polo, and Girls Volleyball all qualified for the North Coast Sectional playoffs! This is a significant achievement, as it represents the highest level of high school competition in our region. We are extremely proud of all of our student-athletes, coaches, and programs for qualifying for NCS and excelling.

Not only did our Mariners qualify and compete in NCS, we found great success while creating a tradition that we continue to play in the postseason. Both the Boys & Girls Cross Country programs have had a strong showing at the NCS. The girls team finished 7th overall. Santiago Henriquez set a personal record at the NCS meet, good enough to qualify to the CIF meet where he finished 64th overall. This is an incredible feat on multiple levels. Santiago is a current sophomore and he finished top 5 of all non-seniors competitors.

This year marks the 5th year in a row for our Girls Golf program to advance to NCS. This is an incredible accomplishment, led by Coach Kenny Johnson. Additionally, two years in a row Girls Water Polo made NCS playoffs! Girls Volleyball went the furthest in their program’s history. The team, led by Coach Jerico Abanico, finished 4th in the Division III bracket of NCS. The road to finishing 4th was quite fun for the entire program.

Academically, our student-athletes are the true meaning of a student-athlete and continue to excel. A total of 211 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA during the first quarter, with 75 earning a 4.0 or higher and another 72 earning between 3.5 or 3.99. Go Mariners!

WINTER PREVIEW As Fall turns into Winter, there is true excitement within the Moreau Catholic community for all of our programs. Boys and Girls Basketball have each looked strong early on.

Similarly, our Boys and Girls Soccer teams have already won multiple games during the infancy of the season. Rally Squad is training for their Competition Season with the National Competition in February.

FROM CLASSROOM TO STAGE TO CLASSROOM Guiding the next generation in theatre arts The MCHS Theatre Department has long welcomed its working alumni back into the classroom, inviting them to mentor the next generation of performers. This season, the tradition continued when Danny Duque-Estrada ’98 returned to campus, stepping in to coach the Theatre Arts 1 students as they prepared their auditions for the fall play, The Plot, Like Gravy, Thickens.

For many young actors, meeting Danny was both inspiring and reassuring. “It was very encouraging to meet Danny knowing that he also went to Moreau and is successful in the career I’m interested in,” shared Dani Pong ’28. Aryan Prasad ’26 reflected on the experience, “I’m grateful for the notes that he gave me as I was preparing for my audition… his advice was sound and resonated with me.”

Others felt the same spark of motivation. Erin Echaluse ’28 added, “When he visited our theatre class, Danny was so warm and charismatic. Whenever we were interacting during the audition, he had a way of uplifting others whilst also giving them the beneficial feedback they needed, and I really enjoyed getting to meet him!”

Danny, too, felt the impact of the visit.

“Coming back to Moreau, where Patrick and I started, to meet and collaborate with a new generation of artists invigorates my own work and reminds me why I still do it,” he said.

His presence left the students energized, bridging generations of performers and reminding everyone of the vibrant community that continues to shape the Moreau theatre family.

Spirit Week 2025 A Week of Mariner Pride As always, Spirit Week at Moreau Catholic High School brought campus to life with creativity, class pride, and unforgettable moments. The celebration kicked off in a wave of green and gold as students and staff packed the Main Gym for the first rally of the week, setting the tone with cheers and school spirit.

The fun continued with BBQ Dad vs. Soccer Mom Day, filling campus with aprons, visors, lawn chairs, and plenty of laughs before the Sophomores and Juniors Rally energized the afternoon. Midweek, students delighted in Dress Like a Teacher Day, while faculty joined in by dressing like students. The day wrapped with the Frosh and Seniors Rally and a spirited Makers Lab Competition showcasing creativity and teamwork.

The week concluded with the always-popular Generations Day, featuring frosh as babies, sophomores as toddlers, juniors as adults, and seniors as senior citizens.

From there, the community headed into a spirited Homecoming Football Game, followed by an evening of music and celebration at the Homecoming Dance.

Packed with themed outfits, friendly competition, and Mariner pride, Spirit Week 2025 reminded us why Moreau Catholic is such a vibrant, joyful place to belong.

Celebrating 60 Years & the Opening of the Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC Performing Arts Center A NEW ERA FOR THE ARTS The highlight of the day was the ribbon cutting for the BPAC—a beautiful new space dedicated to creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression.

Named for Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC, whose leadership and passion for the arts helped shape Moreau’s vision, the center marks an exciting new chapter for student performers and the entire community.

LOOKING AHEAD

On Saturday, October 4, the Mariner community gathered for a milestone moment: Moreau Catholic’s 60th Anniversary and the ribbon-cutting of the Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC Performing Arts Center (BPAC). The afternoon was filled with pride, nostalgia, and gratitude for the generations who have shaped—and continue to shape—our mission of educating hearts and minds.

A COMMUNITY REUNITED Alumni, current families, alumni parents, students, civic leaders, members of the Diocese of Oakland, the Brothers of Holy Cross, faculty, staff, and trustees all came together to honor Moreau’s six decades of faith-filled education. Their presence reflected the rich tapestry of relationships that define the Mariner Family.

HONORING OUR ROOTS Guests enjoyed browsing through decades of yearbooks and touring campus through a special “Nostalgia Tour,” featuring “Then & Now” photos that highlighted Moreau’s growth and enduring Holy Cross heritage. Stories, laughter, and rediscovered memories echoed throughout the halls.

A CELEBRATION IN SONG Music filled the celebration thanks to two alumni now leading Moreau’s performing arts programs. The Mariner Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Justin Firmeza ’20, and the Mariner Choir, led by Dr. Kaia Richards ’99, offered powerful performances that reflected the full-circle Mariner experience.

REFLECTIONS ON LEGACY AND HOPE

An Interview with Terry Lee, Former President and Director of School Sponsorship for the Congregation of Holy Cross, Moreau Province

For more than two decades, Terry Lee served the Moreau Catholic community with dedication, joy, and a deep commitment to the Holy Cross mission. As part of our 60th Anniversary celebration, Terry reflects on what Moreau Catholic has meant to him, the significance of this milestone year, and how our newest addition—the Brother Donald Blauvelt, C.S.C. Center for the Performing Arts—will shape future generations of Mariners.

WHAT MOREAU CATHOLIC MEANS PERSONALLY “I spent 23 happy years at Moreau Catholic,” Terry shares. “It was a wellrounded career as both a teacher and an administrator.”

For him, the heart of Moreau has always been the people: “The people make the place what it is— all committed to the Holy Cross mission of the Brothers. Their dedication is what allows the school to flourish and continually evolve in service of students.”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF HOLY CROSS EDUCATION

Terry sees the 60th Anniversary as an essential moment for reflection and gratitude.

Looking ahead, Terry emphasizes the importance of reflection, formation, and recommitment to mission.

“An important milestone like this should be celebrated,” he says. “Anniversaries give us the opportunity to look back at all that has been accomplished and reflect on the legacy that has been built.

These reflections can guide us—helping illuminate the path forward.”

“The ongoing work of Holy Cross education is firmly in the hands of the educators in each of our schools,” he explains. “They must be nurtured and supported in their ongoing formation as Holy Cross educators.”

IMPRESSIONS OF THE NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Nearly four decades have passed since the school’s last major building project, making the completion of the Brother Donald Blauvelt, C.S.C. Center for the Performing Arts a historic and transformative moment.

“The Center is a wonderful addition to the MCHS campus,” Terry notes. “It provides much-needed, enhanced space for our instrumental and choral music programs—programs that have shaped and inspired generations of Mariners.”

Beyond its educational impact, Terry highlights its symbolic significance: “It honors a Holy Cross Brother who lived and worked at Moreau Catholic and served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Brother Donald Blauvelt was a great supporter of the arts, and this building stands as a testament to that legacy.”

He adds, “Investments in the arts are vital to our Holy Cross mission—to bring students to completeness.”

He sees both the 60th Anniversary and the opening of the new building as catalysts for deeper purpose: “These milestones invite us to revisit where we have been, what has led us to this moment, and how we will continue to deliver the mission into the future.

They are opportunities to set new goals with hope and optimism.”

Drawing a parallel to the turning of the calendar, Terry reflects: “The end of December is filled with ‘year-in-review’ stories. Then January 1st arrives, and we shift toward resolutions—toward the future. Holy Cross education requires both: honoring our past while building for what comes next.”

He concludes with a powerful reminder grounded in the vision of our founder: “Father Moreau created the Congregation, in part, to prepare the world for better times. The 60th Anniversary should be a moment to celebrate all we have accomplished, honor those who came before us, learn from our challenges, and commit ourselves to making the future even better for our students—and for all the students we have yet to serve.”

For Kristie Alejo ’15, Moreau Catholic has long been more than her alma mater—it’s been her home. After returning to campus in 2019 to serve in Campus Ministry, Kristie has continued to shape the Mariner experience with her compassion, creativity, and gift for building community. This year, she begins an exciting new chapter as Moreau Catholic’s Student Life and Activities Coordinator, expanding her impact on every Mariner in meaningful and energizing ways.

Though Kristie has already spent years walking alongside Mariners as a mentor, leader, and organizer through Campus Ministry, her new role allows her to blend the best of her experiences—as a former student, athlete, minister, and alumna—into a broader vision for campus spirit and student engagement.

From reviving beloved traditions to creating new opportunities for joy, connection, and belonging, Kristie is committed to helping every Mariner feel

the “spark” she remembers so clearly from her own high school years.

Kristie shared with us what this new position means to her, how she hopes to uplift student life, and the ways her background in Campus Ministry has shaped the leader she is today.

What does it mean to you to be in this new role as a Moreau Catholic alum?

How has your time in Campus Ministry helped prepare you for a role like this?

High school at Moreau Catholic was one of the best times of my life, from dances to Spirit Week to the friendships that have stayed with me to this day. Now being in a role where I can positively impact current students and future Mariners truly means everything to me. One of the main reasons I applied for this position was the hope that I could help give students the same spark, joy, and sense of belonging that my friends and I felt when we graduated from Moreau.

My time as a student Campus Minister, Fellow, and eventual Associate Campus Minister has shaped me profoundly and prepared me for this role in every way. Under the guidance of Ann Khristine Tabora, I learned organization, time management, long-term planning, and how to pivot under pressure. More importantly, I learned the compassion and empathy needed when working with student leaders.

How do you like to connect with students and the ways you bring a fresh outlook to events, spirit, and excitement on campus?

As a former MCHS volleyball player, I love being able to share the knowledge I’ve gained during my 20-year volleyball career with our current athletes. Another way I connect with students is through music. In the classroom, I regularly ask students for music recommendations and share my own with them as well. Music has always been a big part of my life, and it’s a meaningful way to get to know students on a personal level and build relationships.

As a proud alumna from the class of 2015, I still remember the sparkle of Moreau. Some of that energy was lost after COVID, and I’m committed to bring it back. My goal is to revive that spirit and inspire more alumni, like myself and the many who work here, to stay connected and remain part of the Moreau community for a lifetime.

Campus Ministry taught me how to see and plan the whole picture, paying attention to even the smallest details. I learned when to offer grace, when to give a gentle push, how to collaborate across departments, and how to have hard, but necessary, conversations. I feel most prepared for this role because of the formation, leadership experience, and heart I’ve gained through Campus Ministry.

What are you most excited about as you look ahead in this position?

I’m most excited about helping build fun, meaningful, and lasting memories for our Mariners and hopefully bringing back some of the traditions that made me fall in love with Moreau in the first place.

One of the main reasons I applied for this position was the hope that I could help give students the same spark, joy, and sense of belonging that my friends and I felt when we graduated from Moreau.”

POPCORN, PRIZES & PURPOSE A Halloween Finale to Remember

Moreau Catholic’s 2025 Student Fundraiser ended in the most festive way possible— with a Halloween celebration filled with excitement, laughter, and Mariner pride!

Students who raised $150 or more earned their ticket to “Popcorn, Prizes & Purpose”, a special Halloween Carnival created to reward their hard work and support for the school.

The afternoon transformed campus into a playground of fun. A 40-yard inflatable obstacle course became the star attraction as students raced their friends for bragging rights. Nearby, the inflatable joust, giant trikes, and inflatable horses kept the competition lively and the laughs nonstop.

The students could also try to “Soak the Teacher, or Athletic Director Mr. Abdenour” and the chance to “pie” Mr. Gongwer, both of which drew fun times and unforgettable reactions.

The carnival was the perfect finale to a successful fundraiser—celebrating student effort, building community spirit, and reminding us all what makes Moreau Catholic such a joyful place to learn and grow.

This year, Catholics around the world celebrated what is known as a Jubilee year.

The Jubilee year began on Christmas Eve 2024 and will run through January 6, 2026, the Feast of the Epiphany. I mention this because the theme of the Jubilee year was Pilgrims of Hope. Hope is also a Holy Cross pillar. A friend recently reflected with me that the precursor to hope is gratitude. That reflection stayed with me because it rings true for me both personally and professionally. When we truly recognize all the blessings we have received, we begin to trust and to hope for even better things to come. Gratitude is the fertile soil where hope can bloom.

“For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it patiently.” Romans 8:24-25 Reflecting on this past year, I’m moved by gratitude for all the donors who sustained us in hope while we waited patiently to see the fruits of our labors. As many of you know, and will see in these pages, together as a family, we were able to open the doors to the first new building at Moreau Catholic High School in nearly 40 years. It was incredibly moving to cut the ribbon and walk into the new Br. Donald Blauvelt Performing Arts Center (BPAC) as part of the continued celebration of our 60th anniversary.

Our students experience the love and support of their Mariner family every day through the transformative investments made possible by this year’s generous donors. Reading through this annual report, seeing your names, and reflecting on all our students have been able to achieve through your support, is indeed fertile ground for hope in a transformative future. MARINER WAVES ’72

The Class of 1972 (A) went to an A’s Game Sept. 25th vs. Houston Astros. The Tailgate Party and Game was enjoyed by all 17 who attended. Rich LaPlante, Ron LaPante’s ’71 older brother stopped by to say Hello after seeing our sign and was enlisted by Brad Faria to take the group photo. All the guys say it’s a fun way to get together and catch up.

Kevin Dowling was re-elected to the First Walnut Creek Mutual Board in Rossmoor Walnut Creek.

Kevin moved from Hayward in June 2024 to Walnut Creek.

In October, Brian Copeland was officially inducted into The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame for Outstanding Contribution in Bay Area broadcasting. In addition to television, stage and film work, he spent 27 years on KGO radio as a talk show host. His son Adam ’07, (ASB President) follows in his footsteps as a sports radio talk show host on KNBR and an on air analyst for Stanford football games as well as on air pre and post game analyst for 49er games. Brian will be sending his Hall of Fame induction plaque to join his Emmy Award in the lobby of Moreau Catholic in the hopes of inspiring students to believe that anything is possible.

It has been a long year. Pete Johnson had been dealing with Non-Alcoholic Cirrhosis of the Liver since 2016, not much of a problem until 2023 when things started to go wrong. On October 20, 2024 he was told it was time for a transplant. In his 61 years he had never broken a bone or needed stitches for anything. On February 6th, 2025, Pete had a new liver and his first stitches, actually staples. He spent almost 4 months in Phoenix at the Mayo Clinic, having some setbacks but felt good when he got home. His wife of 39 years, and his daughters have taken great care of him. Pete is now retired and doing great. He likes to thank all of his classmates that prayed for him and gave him many uplifting comments during their journey.

Jon-Paul Navarro (C) was recently promoted to Lt. Colonel in the US Army. Serving our country since 2007, Jon-Paul is married with three children and recently completed a four year deployment in Japan. He is currently stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

Andrea L’Heureux (D) married her husband, Kevin Gutowski at the Berkeley Botanical Garden this spring! They were surrounded by their close friends and families, including her sister Melissa ’10, and parents Jean and Rick L’Heureux (longtime MCHS board member). The

newlyweds live in El Cerrito where Andrea’s flower farming business, Left Field Flower Co. is flourishing! Andrea grows specialty cut flowers for events and seasonal subscribers across the Bay Area. She did her own wedding flowers, of course!
