LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Mariner Family and Friends, As another extraordinary year of educating hearts and minds draws to a close on Mission Boulevard, we reflect with gratitude and hope upon the transformation that our Mariner family has experienced this year. Our blessings abound, and together we have accomplished so much to amplify our Holy Cross mission and strengthen our community! Although we have so many achievements to celebrate, we are most proud of our tenacity and growth.

Our Mariners keep striving for excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts here at Moreau Catholic High School, we are excited to share some of our myriad accomplishments with you here. Our Vector highlights many of the moments that made this year so special: the legacy and traditions that unite us, the successes and future plans that inspire us, and the extraordinary humans who instantiate our mission and continue to shape the future of Moreau Catholic every day. From the remarkable Class of 2026 to our community circle partners, every member of our Mariner family is bringing hope and making a difference every day in our changing world.

As our founder Blessed Basil Moreau said, “How we educate the mind will change with the times; how we cultivate the heart is and will remain timeless.” At Moreau Catholic, we embrace innovation and creatively seek knowledge and resources to help every student transform themselves so they can transform society. LEARNING TO SAIL

Valedictorian Rohan Punnoose ’26 Reflects on Moreau’s Lasting Impact

We’ve learned to manage our sailboats. We are sailors. Or better yet…

Mariners. And the ocean awaits us.”

Standing at the podium as the Class of 2026 Valedictorian, Rohan Punnoose captivated his classmates and guests with a memorable message centered on an unexpected question: “How does a sailboat work?”

Drawing from his first sailing experience—one filled with uncertainty, near misses, and valuable lessons— Rohan compared learning to sail with the journey from high school into adulthood. He reminded his fellow graduates that stability doesn’t come before movement, but rather comes because of it, encouraging the Class of 2026 to embrace the unknown with courage and confidence.

Using a handmade sailboat model, Rohan illustrated one of the speech’s most meaningful lessons: the importance of the sailboat’s hidden daggerboard, which keeps the boat steady beneath the surface. He likened it to the values instilled by Moreau Catholic—respect,

compassion, integrity, and service— which will continue to guide graduates long after they leave campus.

Rohan concluded by thanking the families, teachers, coaches, and mentors who helped prepare the Class of 2026 for the journey ahead, reminding his classmates that while the open ocean may bring challenges, it also offers incredible opportunities to lead, serve, and make a difference.

His final words perfectly captured the spirit of the graduating class: “We’ve learned to manage our sailboats.

We are sailors. Or better yet… Mariners.

And the ocean awaits us.”

Rohan is attending UCLA in the Fall to study Mathematics of Computation.

He’s excited to learn about math and computer science, get involved with research, join fun clubs, be a part of recreational sports, and meet many new people. Go Bruins!

TERRY LEE HONORED WITH 2026 CROSS & ANCHORS AWARD Moreau Catholic High School is proud to recognize Terry Lee as the recipient of the 2026 Cross & Anchors Award, one of the school’s highest honors celebrating individuals whose lives exemplify the mission and values of Holy Cross.

Established by the Moreau Catholic Board of Trustees in 2002, the Cross & Anchors Award recognizes a member of the school community whose leadership, dedication, and commitment to Holy Cross education have left a lasting impact through service, patronage, and philanthropy.

For more than 23 years, Terry faithfully lived out the Holy Cross mission at Moreau Catholic as an English and Social Studies teacher, Assistant Principal of Student Activities, Principal, and President. Throughout his tenure, he inspired generations of students, families, faculty, and alumni with his joyful spirit, compassionate leadership, and unwavering commitment to educating both the heart and the mind.

We are so thankful for Terry’s many years of faithful service to Moreau Catholic High School, the Congregation of Holy Cross, and the countless lives he has touched. His legacy is woven into the history of Moreau Catholic and he will continue to inspire our community for years to come.”

A LEGACY OF FAITH, FAMILY, AND PERSEVERANCE

The Ivaldi-Granzella Family Celebrates Four Decades at Moreau Catholic For more than 40 years, the IvaldiGranzella family has been woven into the fabric of the Moreau Catholic community. This spring, that chapter reached a meaningful milestone as Riley Granzella ’26 graduated as the Salutatorian of the Class of 2026, becoming the fifth and youngest child of Lisa Ivaldi Granzella ’85 to earn a Moreau diploma.

Riley follows in the footsteps of her older brothers, Colton ’09, Grayson ’14, Tanner ’17, and Logan ’22, continuing a family legacy deeply rooted in faith, education, and service.

For Lisa, watching her youngest child graduate has been both emotional and rewarding.

“I feel incredibly proud and grateful,” she shared. “Watching Riley follow in the footsteps of her four older brothers while also becoming her own person has been very meaningful. She has shown independence, strength of character, and perseverance throughout her four years at Moreau.”

While Riley’s academic accomplishments are impressive, her journey is also one of resilience. Lisa recalls that overcoming

STORIES FROM THE MOREAU COMMUNITY dyslexia was one of Riley’s earliest challenges, one that she met with determination and hard work.

“I still remember the long nights she spent studying and reworking assignments until she mastered them,” Lisa said. “That kind of determination has carried her through.

Her success in academics, sports, and faith reflects her perseverance and heart. Being named Salutatorian is a wellearned recognition of everything she has accomplished.”

The Granzella family’s connection to Moreau extends far beyond the classroom. At the center of campus stands the Ivaldi Student Center, named in honor of Lisa’s parents and serving as the literal and symbolic hub of student life.

For generations of the family, walking through its doors each day has been a humbling experience.

“For Riley and the generations of our family, walking through the Ivaldi Student Center every day is a reminder of the opportunities that come with being part of this community,” Lisa said. “The building represents a chapter of our family’s history that continues to be part of student life in a very visible way.”

She hopes that connection inspires not only her own family but every student who gathers there.

“It is special to see a family name connected to a place where students gather, grow, and make memories every day—whether during lunch with friends, student meetings, or simply passing through between classes. I pray that all who pass through those doors use the opportunities they have been given in the best possible way.”

As one chapter closes, the values that have guided the IvaldiGranzella family for decades continue to endure.

“I hope they take away the importance of making the most of every opportunity and doing so with integrity,” Lisa said.

“Moreau has given our family a strong foundation, and I hope Riley and future generations remember that success is built through effort, character, and resilience.”

Though Riley’s graduation marks the culmination of the family’s 40-year journey as a current Moreau Catholic family, the legacy they leave behind extends far beyond diplomas and milestones. It lives in the values they have embraced, the relationships they have built, and in the walls of the Ivaldi Student Center, where future generations of Mariners will continue to gather, grow, and create memories of their own.

And like every meaningful Moreau story, the Ivaldi-Granzella legacy reminds us that family, faith, and community are gifts that endure long after graduation day.

MOREAU HIGH ALUMNUS PAT CRUICKSHANK ’76 RETIRES AFTER A CAREER DEDICATED TO STUDENTS AND STUDENT-ATHLETES As we sat down with North Coast Section (NCS) Commissioner and Moreau High School alumnus Pat Cruickshank ’76 at NCS headquarters in San Ramon, one thing became immediately clear: his passion for sports has always been matched by his commitment to students.

For more than four decades, Cruickshank has dedicated his professional life to supporting, mentoring, and advocating for students and student-athletes throughout Northern California.

Cruickshank attended Moreau High School from 1973-76, where he played baseball and developed relationships with teachers and coaches who would ultimately shape his future.

Among the most influential were baseball coach Ray Breves and P.E. teacher Jerry Mativier.

“My interest in teaching and coaching came from those times at Moreau,” Cruickshank recalled. “I saw how much they loved what they did. Mativier would always jump in and play with us, and I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that someday.’”

At the time, fellow Moreau alumnus Tony Dorado ’77 was serving as Moreau’s varsity basketball coach. Dorado invited Cruickshank to observe practices and games, an opportunity he eagerly accepted.

Over the next 12 seasons, Cruickshank transformed Heritage into one of the area’s premier basketball programs. From 2006-18, he guided the Patriots to six 20-win seasons, three Bay Valley Athletic League championships, and 11 consecutive North Coast Section playoff appearances. His teams captured the NCS Division I Championship in 2018, and he finished his varsity coaching career with an impressive 266-126 record. Following the championship season, Cruickshank stepped away from Heritage to become the NCS Assistant Commissioner. Soon after, he was unanimously selected as only the fourth Commissioner in NCS history, succeeding Gil Lemmon, who had served in the role for an extraordinary 47 years.

“I learned a lot from people who were willing to share what they knew and help you build your foundation,” Cruickshank said. “Relationships are what led me to where I am today, and I’ve always treasured that.” These relationships helped launch a career that would leave a lasting impact on thousands of students.

Leading one of California’s most respected athletic organizations brought both challenges and opportunities.

During his tenure, Cruickshank helped schools navigate wildfires and poor air quality, managed the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and continued to oversee countless championship events across the section.

Cruickshank spent 19 years coaching basketball at San Leandro High School and four years serving as the school’s athletic director before accepting an opportunity at the newly opened Heritage High School in Brentwood. There, he became the school’s first athletic director while also serving as varsity boys basketball coach.

Yet one of his proudest accomplishments has been helping introduce girls’ flag football as an official NCS sport. “Girls’ flag football is one of the most fun things I’ve seen happen,” Cruickshank said. “It’s so much fun to watch the girls play and be so passionate about this new opportunity for them.” Under his leadership, girls’ flag football launched in Fall 2024 with

While at CSUH, he was given the opportunity to coach junior varsity basketball at Castro Valley High School for two seasons.

As a first-time coach, he sought guidance from trusted mentors and friends—including those just down Mission Boulevard at his alma mater.

35 participating schools. In just two years, participation more than doubled to 80 schools competing across two divisions.

With flag football now gaining momentum at the collegiate level and moving toward NCAA recognition, Cruickshank believes its popularity will continue to soar because, as he puts it, the girls “just love it.” Moreau Catholic is among the schools to most recently benefit from Pat’s passion for growing girls flag football. Thanks in part to his vision and leadership, the Mariners will proudly field their first-ever Girls Varsity Flag Football team this fall.Another initiative close to his heart was the implementation of the NCS Sportsmanship Creed, which student-athletes read before competitions. The creed reflects Cruickshank’s belief that athletics should foster character, respect, and community—not simply focus on winning.

“I tried to do more and more to foster a positive experience for athletes and spectators,” he said.

Terry Eidson ’76, a longtime friend and former classmate of Pat’s, reflected on his remarkable career, saying, “Pat was the consummate professional. Whether he was in the classroom, on the sidelines, serving as an administrator, or leading the North Coast Section as commissioner, the well-being of students was always his top priority. Pat understood the true value of educational athletics and the lifelong lessons young men and women gain through participation in sports.”

At the end of July, the NCS Commissioner’s office will once again have big shoes to fill. Fortunately, Cruickshank is confident in the future of the organization. Bri Niemi was unanimously selected as the next NCS Commissioner, becoming the first woman to hold the position. “I have so much confidence in Bri to take over this role,” Cruickshank said.

As retirement approaches, Cruickshank is looking forward to spending more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, all of whom live nearby. He also plans to enjoy more days on the golf course and take trips with family—simple pleasures after a lifetime spent serving others.

For Cruickshank, the trophies, championships, and titles tell only part of the story. His true legacy can be found in the students, athletes, coaches, and colleagues whose lives he has touched throughout his career.

And it all began at Moreau.

A FAMILY’S HIGH SCHOOL HOME The Dias Family and the School They Love So Much

For Theresa Ballard Dias, Moreau Catholic High School is much more than the place where her children, Antonia ’22 and Tiago ’25, received their education. It is a community that transformed her family and inspired her to continue giving back long after her children graduated.

Today, Theresa serves on the Moreau Catholic Board of Trustees, where she works to ensure that future generations of Mariners experience the same sense of belonging, support, and opportunity that shaped her own family.

Interestingly, Moreau wasn’t always part of the plan.

Although the Dias family was familiar with the school through their involvement at Saint Edward School and CYO athletics, they initially intended to send their children to public school.

After a disappointing first year elsewhere, they made the difficult decision to seek a transfer.

“It was during our parent interview at Moreau that it became clear we weren’t being interrogated to see if we measured up,” Theresa recalled. “The questions were about ensuring a great fit and a strong launch. At that point, we realized this was our family’s high school home.”

That sense of home is what Theresa believes makes Moreau so special.

“My kids are so different from one another, and there was room

here for both of them to have such personalized high school experiences,” she said. “This school was big enough to allow them to carve their own unique paths, yet small enough to give them the support they needed.”

For Theresa and her husband, David, the greatest gift was knowing that each child was seen and valued for who they were.

“Each child was seen, appreciated, protected, and nurtured.”

As an “Army brat” who attended three different high schools herself, Theresa has experienced many school communities.

It is that perspective that has deepened her appreciation for Moreau Catholic.

“I’m utterly confident that what I see and experience at Moreau is so unique and so special,” she said. “Once you understand how profound the difference is between this community and thousands of others, you have to do what you can to ensure this flame endures.”

That desire to preserve the school’s “special sauce” inspired Theresa to join the Facilities Committee and eventually serve on the Board of Trustees.

One of the most rewarding aspects of her service has been learning about the many programs and opportunities available to students.

“I’m amazed to learn about clubs and academic pathways that I had no idea about as a parent,” she shared. “This school is comprised of such impressive and loving faculty who really amaze me on a regular basis. I feel inspired at every point of engagement.”

Theresa believes one of Moreau’s greatest strengths is its commitment to educating the whole person.

“I most deeply appreciate how Moreau teaches students how to be in the world—how to be strong-minded, fair people who know how to think,” she said. “I appreciate how Moreau supports a community where the heart is valued as much as the mind.”

She also credits Moreau’s Saints and Scholars Program for helping both Antonia and Tiago develop the confidence and self-management skills they needed to thrive in college. The program’s emphasis on meeting students where they are and helping them advocate for themselves had a profound impact on her family. Tiago graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 2026!

“The proof for me was the pride that graduating seniors show in wearing the Saints and Scholars stole with their robes,” she said. “It’s a symbol of the gains they have made, and the love and support they know they can find in the world.”

Although both of her children have now graduated, Theresa’s connection to Moreau Catholic is stronger than ever.

“I’m now building relationships with faculty where I have a more comprehensive understanding of how they impact folks, and not just how they impacted my two,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be an advocate for this amazing institution.”

Having completed her first year as a Trustee, Theresa sees herself as more than an alumna parent.

“I feel like I’m the third person in our family to attend Moreau,” she said.

And like so many members of the Moreau Catholic community, once you become part of the Mariner family, you remain part of it forever.

A LEGACY OF SERVICE The Raimondi Family’s Enduring Connection to Moreau Catholic For more than five decades, the Raimondi family has been an integral part of the Moreau Catholic community.

Through generations of students, decades of volunteerism, steadfast leadership, and devoted service, their name has become synonymous with generosity, faith, and an unwavering commitment to the school.

This spring, that remarkable chapter reached a meaningful milestone as Juliette Thompson ’26 crossed the commencement stage, becoming the last member of the family to graduate from Moreau Catholic after more than 50 continuous years of family involvement.

For Juliette’s mother, Michelle (Raimondi) Thompson ’85, and her sisters, Stacey (Raimondi) Ferreira ’86, and Cheryl (Baglietto) Meares ’75 the moment was both joyful and bittersweet.

“It was a moment of tremendous pride and gratitude,” Michelle shared. “Seeing Juliette cross the stage felt like the culmination of 50 years of family history at Moreau. It felt like a beautiful circle: gratitude for the past, pride in the present, and excitement for all that lies ahead for her. While it is bittersweet to see this chapter come to an end, we’ll always carry a piece of Moreau with us.”

STORIES FROM THE MOREAU COMMUNITY Although Juliette’s graduation marks the end of the family’s daily presence on campus, the Raimondi name will forever remain woven into the fabric of Moreau Catholic.

At the heart of that legacy are John and Charlene Raimondi, whose countless hours of service helped shape the school community.

Charlene served as a member of the Board of Trustees, while John dedicated years of leadership as a member of the Board of Directors, Board Chairman, and Chairman of the Finance Committee. His unwavering commitment to Moreau is forever honored through the John A. Raimondi Volunteer Award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify extraordinary service to the school.

As one chapter of the Raimondi-Thompson family’s Moreau story comes to a close, their impact on the school community remains ever-present. Through John and Charlene’s visionary leadership, Stacey’s years of dedicated service to Moreau students, Michelle’s continued commitment to the school, and the generations of Mariners who proudly carried the family name, their legacy lives on in the values they modeled—faith, generosity, compassion, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.

While Juliette may be the last Raimondi graduate, the family’s extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire the Moreau Catholic community for generations to come.

The Raimondi legacy extends well beyond volunteer leadership.

Following in her parents’ footsteps, Stacey Ferreira ’86 devoted 16 years to Moreau Catholic as a school counselor, guiding and supporting generations of Mariner students through some of the most formative years of their lives. Her compassionate presence, thoughtful mentorship, and unwavering commitment to student success reflected the same spirit of service that defined her parents’ contributions to the school. Through her work, Stacey left an enduring impact on countless students and further strengthened the family’s lasting connection to Moreau Catholic.

Reflecting on their parents’ dedication, Michelle and Stacey believe their service was rooted in gratitude and faith.

“They saw the impact the school had on our family and wanted to ensure that the same experience would be available to future students,” Michelle shared. “Moreau was more than a school to them; it was a community they loved, and serving it was simply their way of giving back.”

As the family looks toward the future, they hope their legacy will be defined not by their name, but by the values they sought to embody.

“Our hope is that our family’s legacy is remembered for service, generosity, faith, and a commitment to community,” Michelle said.

“If our family’s story encourages even a few students to recognize the impact one person or one family can have over time, then that is the legacy we would be most proud of leaving behind.”

Michelle, Cheryl, and Stacey also believe their father would want recipients of the John A. Raimondi Volunteer Award to understand that service is never about recognition.

“He would want future recipients to know that service is about giving your time, talents, and heart to something you believe in,” Michelle said. “Even the smallest acts of service can make a meaningful difference.”

Whether through leadership, mentorship, or simply showing up when help is needed, John believed every contribution helps build a stronger community.

“More than anything,” Michelle reflected, “he would want people to understand that service is about leaving a place better than you found it and investing in the success and well-being of others.”

BRINGING GLOBAL EXCELLENCE HOME

Moreau Catholic’s Joshua Carle ’27 Returns from Prestigious London Academic Program This spring, rising Moreau Catholic senior Joshua Carle ’27 was one of just 18 students selected to participate in the prestigious School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) program in London. Through discussions with policymakers, scholars, and global leaders, Joshua gained firsthand insight into some of today’s most pressing international issues. In this reflection, he shares how the experience challenged his thinking and shaped his perspective on leadership, diplomacy, and global citizenship.

By Joshua Carle ’27 The School for Ethics and Global Leadership is a selective academic program that brings together students from across the United States to study international affairs through direct engagement with policymakers, scholars, and real-world case studies. I learned about the program through my interest in global affairs and applied because of its focus on connecting classroom learning to real-world policy challenges.

During my time in London with the School for Ethics and Global Leadership, I began to understand diplomacy not as something distant or abstract, but as something deeply human—shaped by compromise, competing priorities, and real-world consequences. As one of eighteen students selected for the program, I had the opportunity to engage directly with policymakers, economists, and scholars on some of the most pressing global issues today. In a discussion with UK Member of Parliament Ben Lake, we explored the economic implications of Brexit and broader political shifts across Europe. Speaking with former Member of the European Parliament Jean Lambert pushed me to think more critically about sustainability, immigration, and the role of policy in shaping everyday life.

One of the most impactful moments came during a visit to All Souls College at the University of Oxford, where we engaged in direct dialogue with Avril Haines, former U.S. Director of National Intelligence, and participated in an interactive discussion with philosopher Cecile Fabre. Engaging with both figures revealed how global decision-making spans ethics, security, and governance — and how rarely these dimensions are separated. It also highlighted that leadership often requires navigating uncertainty rather than arriving at simple answers.

However, it was not only observing these conversations that shaped my experience — it was participating in them. As part of a policy research project on Spain’s housing crisis, I contributed to a comprehensive policy paper and served as an expert witness representing the real estate and landlord sector, presenting our findings directly to Jean Lambert. In a two-minute briefing, I delivered datadriven recommendations addressing the impact of short-term rentals on housing affordability, drawing on research from cities like Barcelona. Responding to questions on urban sustainability required translating complex policy into clear, actionable solutions, making policymaking feel immediate rather than abstract.

Beyond structured discussions, the program challenged me to think more deeply about the human side of global issues. Through case studies such as the Northern Ireland conflict and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I saw how history, identity, and policy intersect in ways that cannot be reduced to simple solutions. These experiences connect closely to my work outside the classroom, including leading a youth-focused global affairs journal that highlights perspectives from young people affected by conflict and displacement. Listening to these stories reinforced the importance of approaching global issues with both analytical rigor and empathy.

That perspective is something I continue to bring back to the Moreau Catholic community. In student government, where I help lead school-wide initiatives, I apply the same mindset — balancing competing perspectives and making thoughtful decisions in complex situations. Whether organizing events or addressing student concerns, I have found that the skills developed abroad — listening, adapting, and communicating across differences — are just as relevant back at home.

London provided the setting, but the real impact of the experience came from the conversations and perspectives that continue to shape how I think about the world and my role within it.

FROM MARINER TO BUFFALO BILL Kaleb Elarms-Orr Drafted to the NFL Moreau Catholic High School proudly celebrates alumnus Kaleb Elarms-Orr ’21, who achieved his lifelong dream by being selected by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the 126th overall pick.

A standout student-athlete at Moreau Catholic, Elarms-Orr emerged as one of California’s top football recruits before continuing his career at the University of California, Berkeley and later at Texas Christian University. During his senior season at TCU, he earned First Team All-Big 12 honors, recorded 130 tackles, and was named the Defensive MVP of the Alamo Bowl.

Known for his athleticism, relentless motor, and leadership, Elarms-Orr’s selection by the Bills is another proud milestone in Moreau Catholic’s rich athletic tradition.

The entire Moreau Catholic community congratulates Kaleb on this incredible achievement and looks forward to cheering him on as he begins his professional career in the NFL. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner!

Moreau Catholic’s Early College Momentum Charts a New Course For Moreau Catholic families, one question is becoming easier to answer: Will my student be ready for what comes after high school?

Through the Early College Momentum (ECM) initiative, the answer is increasingly: they’re already there.

A First-of-Its-Kind Guarantee In Fall 2025, Moreau Catholic signed its first Direct Entry partnership — a landmark agreement with the University of Portland, a fellow Holy Cross institution. Under the agreement, any Mariner who graduates with a 3.5 GPA receives automatic admission to the University of Portland, along with a $20,500 scholarship renewable for all four years. For families navigating the uncertainty and rising cost of college admissions, this is more than an opportunity; it’s a guarantee.

And it’s only the beginning. Moreau Catholic is currently in final negotiations with four additional universities on similar Direct Entry agreements. Stay tuned for announcements in the coming months!

A National Network Opens Its Doors This summer, Moreau Catholic signed an agreement with the National Education Opportunity Network (NEON), becoming the school’s first College-in-High-School partner. NEON connects qualifying high

This school year, Moreau Catholic will pilot its first two NEON courses: Mathematical Concepts in Engineering from Dartmouth College and International Relations from Georgetown University. Mariners enrolled in these courses will learn directly from instructors at some of the nation’s most respected universities — without ever leaving campus. These classes will be part of the students’ normal schedule and will be team-taught by the university and a Moreau Catholic instructor.

Building on a Strong Foundation NEON joins the concurrent and dual-enrollment partnerships Mariners already know well, including longstanding relationships with Chabot College and Cal State East Bay. This year, Moreau Catholic hopes to formalize an expanded MOU with Cal State East Bay, opening the door to even more courses for even more Mariners.

Moreau Catholic High School proudly recognizes Mrs. Kristen Parker as a recipient of the 2026 Holy Cross Educator of the Year Award.

Presented by student Mecca Taylor ’26, the award celebrates Mrs. Parker’s ability to create a classroom where students feel seen, supported, and inspired.

“It’s a place where respect is lived out, creativity is encouraged, and every student feels like they truly belong,” Mecca shared.

As Moreau’s ceramics and art teacher, Mrs. Parker teaches far more than artistic techniques. Through every project, she instills resilience, confidence, and perseverance, reminding students that growth often comes from mistakes and starting over.

“This teacher doesn’t just teach,” Mecca said. “She inspires, she uplifts, and she transforms lives.”

MOCK TRIAL WINS AGAIN IN CA STATE FINALS

By Heather Marinko ’12 After winning a record 10th Alameda County Mock Trial Championship title-all in the last 14 years, Moreau Catholic High School’s Mock Trial team once again advanced to the Mock Trial California State Finals this March. The 16-member team—composed of five seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and two frosh—competed in four rigorous trials over the course of two days, against 33 other top high schools representing different counties from across California.

Moreau emerged as one of only two undefeated teams in the competition. In a historic first for the program, the team advanced to the Championship Round, ultimately earning second place in the state—the highest finish in school history—under Head Coach Heather Marinko ’12.

Reflecting on the team’s achievement, Marinko shared, “I am incredibly proud of these students. I always believed they had this potential, but their dedication, determination, and perseverance truly brought this moment to life.”

The journey to this milestone began early in the year when Moreau competed in Empire Mock Trial, an international Mock Trial competition that took place in Philadelphia, to help the returning team members hone their skills and step into new roles following the graduation of four seniors. That experience strengthened the team as a whole and gave the students the boost they needed to succeed. “Coming out of our Empire Tournament, everyone seemed to be especially focused and determined to compete at the state level this year. I think we all relied on feedback from our scrimmages and county competition to put our best foot forward at States,” commented Mock Trial Co-President, Olivia Ritchie ’26. Sreehitha Banday ’26, the team’s other Co-President, echoed that sentiment, adding, “the reason we have come 24

this far is because each of us pushed ourselves to grow individually and as a team. This year’s team has worked tirelessly to improve, and our work has paid off.”

What once may have felt out of reach is now a reality, and the team is fired up and already looking forward to the future. With momentum on their side, the team is motivated, focused, and ready, with the goal of winning the State competition next year and representing California in the Mock Trial National competition.

Nannette Miranda and Steve Roberts (B) reconnected at their 20-year Moreau High School reunion in 2002. They eloped a few years later, marrying on the shores of Jamaica. They’ve been visiting beaches around the world ever since. Most recently, they were getting sand between their toes in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. April 2026 marks their 20-year wedding anniversary.

Michael Doane (C) completed his Doctor of Engineering degree at The George Washington University in 2025, and joined Iambic Therapeutics as a Principal Machine Learning Scientist. He previously completed his MS in Bioengineering at Stanford. His work involves implementing computational methods to improve clinical trials. He lives with his wife Amanda in Cary, NC. Kelsey (Morrow) Vespe (D) married her husband, Eric Vespe, this past Fall in the Rose Garden at the Disneyland Hotel. The couple currently live in Austin, Texas where Kelsey is an elementary school teacher.

Luke Zakedis (E) completed his Master’s in International Security with a certificate in Refugees & Humanitarian Crises at Georgetown University, Walsh School of Foreign Service. He had the opportunity to study over ten countries, meeting with a broad range of their residents, from senior government officials to stateless refugees. Luke now works in Washington, D.C. in USCENTCOM Yemen Conflict Monitoring Team.

Judith “Judy” Larson (1940-2026) Former Moreau Catholic High School Science Teacher Moreau Catholic High School fondly remembers former teacher Judith “Judy” Larson, who passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born in Tucson, Arizona, on August 13, 1940, Judy lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, compassion, resilience, and a deep love for education. After graduating from Amphitheater High School, she attended Westmont College, where she pursued studies in chemistry and vocal performance — an uncommon and ambitious path for women at the time.

Judy’s life journey brought her across the world, including time living in Taiwan and Hong Kong, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for travel, culture, and global affairs. It was in Hong Kong that she first began her teaching career in science education.

In 1974, Judy returned to California and later dedicated 12 years to teaching at Moreau High School before continuing her career in public education for more than two additional decades. She was known as a respected and disciplined educator who challenged and encouraged generations of students with both intelligence and care.

Beyond the classroom, Judy was devoted to her family and friends. She created a warm and welcoming home, loved gathering people together, and found joy in baking, traveling, music, sports, and meaningful conversation. Her generosity, humor, and curiosity left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Even after being diagnosed with myositis in 2008, Judy remained determined, engaged, and deeply connected to those she loved.

Her strength and grace through difficult years reflected the same perseverance and compassion that defined her life and career.

Judy is survived by her daughter, Coreen (Cory); her son, Timothy (Tim); her sister, Helen; her grandchildren, Anna and Peter; extended family members; dear friends; and many former students whose lives she profoundly touched.

The Moreau Catholic community is grateful for Judy Larson’s years of service and the lasting difference she made in the lives of her students. We remember her with gratitude and honor the legacy she leaves behind in the classroom and beyond.

Dennis Carricciola (1946-2026) Former Moreau Catholic High School Science Teacher

By Maya McComb ’27 On January 25, the Mariner family lost a former teacher who had a memorable and lasting impact on our school community. He began teaching at Moreau in 1969. He was an English teacher, and later took on Journalism and Drama instruction. Mr. Caracciolo founded the school newspaper, “The Explorer,” and his initial teachings and foundations still carry over to our current digital publications. Mr. Caracciolo was also responsible for the first regular fall and spring theater productions, which continue to this day.

After leaving Moreau in 1981, he continued to explore his passion for writing and performing.

He was the founder and creator of “The Crack News” on cable channel 12C in Castro Valley.

He later joined the Contra Costa Times as a featured reporter and even interviewed the 49ers Head Coach Bill Walsh.

Mr. Caracciolo was deeply interested in the Kennedy Assassination, producing a “Primer on the JFK Assassination,” and writing a self-published book, “A Doorway to Time” that combines the assassination and the understanding of time.

He is survived through his loving family, and his impact at Moreau will forever be remembered and appreciated.
