Enjoy Moraga Trails The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to release the new Moraga Trails Map! The Parks and Recreation Commission has worked tirelessly to develop a map detailing specifics of the Moraga trail system including local and regional trails, East Bay Regional Park Trails, East Bay MUD Trails, and John Muir Land Trust trails. We encourage you to get out and enjoy the great trails and open space that Moraga has to offer.

Regular physical activity and connecting with nature provides numerous health benefits. Walking or hiking for just 30 minutes a day can lessen health risks, improve your mood and promote healthy sleep patterns according to the American Cancer Society. Trails are available for all fitness levels so get out and enjoy the great outdoors right here in your own back yard.

Moraga Junior Women's Club Moraga Juniors work to improve the quality of life for women, children and elderly through volunteer service and fundraising in Contra Costa County and the Greater Bay Area. Through our volunteer work, we strengthen bonds in the community and make new friends.

Sewers and Storm Drains: Two Different Systems The Sewer System—Flows to Treatment Plant Every time you flush a toilet or send water down an inside drain, it ends up in the sewer system. The public sewer main pipes are owned and maintained by the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District. The private sewer lateral pipes that connect houses or businesses to the public sewer main are owned and maintained by the property owners. The sewer system carries wastewater through this network of pipes to the wastewater treatment facility in Martinez, where it is treated and disinfected before being released into Suisun Bay or recycled for irrigation and other non-potable purposes.

Contrary to popular belief, the grated hole on the street corner does not lead to the sewer, it leads to the storm drain.

The Storm Drain System—Flows to Bay without Treatment The storm drain system is a network of pipes, catch basins, and natural drainage ditches. This system collects runoff from rain, irrigation, sprinklers, etc. and transports the water—untreated—to Suisun Bay or other natural waterways. In the case of Moraga it drains directly in to the San Leandro Reservoir.

Both Systems Affect the Environment Water is our most precious resource.

Avoid Scams Scam artists continue to target Moraga residents with a vengeance. Here is an example of a common scam and some tips on how to prevent yourself from becoming a victim: Extortion Letters—Letters or emails are being sent that tell you the writer knows about some dark secret or something you did. Unless you pay an amount of money via a bitcoin transaction, your embarrassing secret will be revealed. We all know there is no secret that someone knows about; they are preying upon your fear of the unknown. Laugh about it, shred the letter and don’t worry about it. It is a scam! Often times, the best way to prevent being scammed is to not answer calls from unknown or unfamiliar telephone numbers. Never supply personal information over the phone.

Please contact the Moraga Police Department at (925) 888-7055 with any questions. You can also report scams to www.ftc.gov. Knowledge and caution are some of the best tools to prevent scams.

Lamorinda CERT Is Your "Go Bag" Ready?

We’ve all seen how wildfires and earthquakes can devastate communities.

Are you prepared should a disaster hit the Lamorinda area? If you have just minutes to evacuate, do you have a “go bag” packed and ready with the essentials you will need immediately as well as important documents you may need later? Have you made a plan with your family about evacuating, meeting places, and phone contacts to relay status? The time to plan is BEFORE a disaster hits and CERT classes teach this and more.

Lamorinda CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) winter class registration is open. Upcoming 2019 training will be held in Lafayette on Tuesday nights 1/8–3/5 from 6:30–9:30 pm at the Lafayette Community Center. Classes are open to residents and employees of the Lamorinda area. More Chamber/ More Moraga Building is happening within our local Business Community. Literal building, with the remodel of Taco Bell, new service industry businesses opening along with several new restaurants and a local brewery. The Chamber also continues to build the Town/Gown relationship with Saint Mary’s College sponsoring a Business Case Study Competition through a course with Senior Business students that tackle a community issue in Shark Tank-like fashion. Their research and solution options will be judged by major company CEOs and local dignitaries offering both cash to the winning teams and course credit to all participants. More important to these local efforts is the building of momentum for interested and committed community members to join the Chamber to get involved in supporting local business while lending their talents and voice.

Moraga Education Foundation The Moraga Education Foundation (MEF) was founded to raise funds to preserve and enhance educational opportunities for ALL students attending public schools in Moraga. Our schools could not offer the depth and breadth of services and programs, and retain our exceptional staff, without significant financial support from our parents, community members, and business and civic sponsors.

Our campaign has started off strong and we hope to continue this momentum with our third annual fundraising event, Rev Up for Education Auction Gala.

This event will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville and will feature auction items, dinner and dancing. Please join us for this community-wide event; tickets are limited and will go on sale mid-January.

Enjoy a memorable tea party at the elegant Hacienda de las Flores Park! Dress up in party attire and practice teatime etiquette at this tea party designed to delight children ages 4–10 and their families.

A delectable buffet of sandwiches, fruit, pastries, and desserts await. Each child will make and stuff their very own teddy bear to take home as a keepsake from the Teddy Bear Tea Party.

Hop on over to the Moraga Commons Park for the annual Spring Egg Hunt! Children eight and under can participate in an oldfashioned egg hunt, play games, and enjoy face painting, crafts, and bounce houses.

Each child should bring a basket for collecting eggs, and parents are encouraged to arrive with camera in hand for photo opportunities with the Bunny.

Admission to the event, sponsored by the Moraga Junior Women’s Club, includes participation in one of two egg hunts, at either 10:00 am or 11:00 am.

Lamorinda Trails Challenge Coming Spring 2019

Join your neighbors and friends for the Lamorinda Trails Challenge coming this Spring. The Trails Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Moraga, Lafayette and Orinda communities highlighting the magnificent trail systems connecting us. Walkers, runners, bikers, families, dogs, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to hit the trails and record how far they walk, hike, run, or bike on Lamorinda area trails. Fun objective based challenges will encourage you to explore, appreciate, and connect with your local trail system.

Have fun volunteering this summer as a Counselor in Training (CIT) at Moraga Day Camp! Gain valuable job skills as you work alongside our Recreation Leaders in a fun and safe environment. After an interview process, accepted participants will be trained in leading camp activities, improve customer service skills, leadership, responsibility, and reliability.

Recreation Department staff will provide daily guidance and supervision for CITs. At the end of each week, CITs will receive feedback and an evaluation.

Senior Trips

Activity Levels—You must be able to walk four steep steps to board the van. Let us know of any physical limitations prior to signing up so staff can try to accommodate your needs ahead of time. Trips depart from the Hacienda de las Flores. Choose your level carefully: Level 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair.

Level 2: Small amount of walking Level 3: Moderate to heavy walking Level 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing Level 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, call us at (925) 888-7036. Trips are generally from 9:00 am–4:00 pm. Please note: Times listed for trips are approximate. Exact meeting times will be provided one week prior to trip.

Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco Wednesday, March 27, 2019 Step back in time to San Francisco’s early days at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. An icon of Victorian architecture, the Conservatory is the oldest existing public wood-and-glass conservatory in North America, as well as home to thousands of tropical plants from around the world! The Victorian Visit Tour includes admission to the Conservatory of Flowers and a staff-led tour of the five public galleries starting with a historical introduction to the building, Conservatory Valley, and Golden Gate Park which surrounds us. Boxed lunch will be provided following tour.

St. George Spirits Tour/Tasting and Lunch at Pier 29 Waterfront Restaurant Wednesday, April 24, 2019 Private tours of St. George Spirits are an extraordinary way to learn about craft distillation and artisan spirits. Your friendly and knowledgeable spirit guide will provide our group with an overview of the distillery’s history, introduce you to their family of spirits, and explain the production process and equipment. Your tour will conclude in the tasting room with a guided tasting designed to help you learn how to approach and appreciate spirits.

Each tasting includes a selection of six of our spirits—all made onsite! Prior to our tour we’ll enjoy a hosted luncheon at Pier 29 Waterfront Restaurant.

II Fiorello Olive Oil Tour and Lunch Tuesday, May 21, 2019 II Fiorello is a family-owned company dedicated to growing and milling the finest quality artisan olive oil located in Green Valley and Suisun Valley between Fairfield and Napa Valley. During the tour of the organic property, you will hear the history of olive oil, the significance of the term extra virgin, and the production of their international awardwinning olive oils. We visit the olive grove to look at the different olive varieties and how we care for our trees. The tour continues with a visit to our state-of-the-art Pieralisi Gold olive mill, capable of milling 3 tons of olives an hour. We conclude with a guided tasting of our olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Following the tastings you will enjoy a lunch served on the back patio overlooking the beautiful Suisun Valley. Most lunch items are from the organic gardens on the property.

Veterans' Burial Benefit Workshop Presenter: Barry Bamford, Sacred Space Memorial

Twenty short years ago, there were no veteran’s cemeteries available to serve Bay Area Veterans. Today, there are Veterans cemeteries serving Bay Area Vets and a new one opening soon in Alameda. Sacred Space Memorial has over 35 years’ experience serving Veterans and their families. In this workshop, learn about the VA and CalVet burial benefits, new cemeteries, who is eligible, and how to apply for this valuable benefit. Also learn what is included in the benefit, what the family’s remaining responsibilities will be, and how to create a “one call does it all solution.” Burial in a National Cemetery is free to veterans and their eligible dependents but it is not automatic. It must be applied for and the worst day to apply is the day it is needed.

Beginning Genealogy: Part 2 Presenter: Linda Harms Okazaki

Linda Okazaki is back to present another workshop on Genealogy. This is a follow-up to her last presentation, Introduction to Genealogy course offered earlier this year. You will learn to navigate basic websites such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. Ordering vital records, keeping track of data, preserving artifacts, and sharing your findings will be covered.
