Lamorinda Trails Challenge

Hit the Trails! The Lamorinda Trails challenge invites you to explore your local trails and do something good for your body and mind. The Trails Challenge is free, designed for all fitness levels, and is a self-guided program to complete on your own schedule. Join your friends and neighbors for this exciting challenge scheduled to run May 1–October 31, 2019. There are two ways to complete the challenge: Go the Distance (complete 26.2 miles on Lamorinda Trails) or Complete the Objectives (complete five of the eight objectives listed). More information and free Trail Challenge t-shirts are coming soon to your local Parks and Recreation Department. Storm Water Where Does It Go

Some people may think that runoff from the streets flows down the storm drain to our local wastewater treatment plant.

This is a common misconception!

Storm water and all the pollutants that flow from our homes, parking lots, and streets go into the storm drain, and are discharged directly into our creeks and ends up in San Leandro Reservoir Water and pollutants that flow into the sanitary sewer system, which are separate from storm drains, such as water from our bathtubs and toilets, are sent to a wastewater treatment facility before the water is discharged to the Bay, Delta, or ocean.

Town Crier The Moraga Town Council approved the revised Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) for the Town. This plan is intended to be the guiding document for the Town during emergencies. As part of the EOP, an Emergency Evacuation Plan has also been developed for the Town, which divides Moraga into 23 separate evacuation zones, a map off the zones can be found at police.moraga.ca.us. Postcards will be mailed to all residences to identify which zone they reside in and additional information.

In an emergency, first responders would use the Contra Costa County Community Warning System (CWS) to notify residents in a specific geographical zone of the need to evacuate.

Residents need to sign up for CWS by going to cwsalerts.com/registration.

Wildfire Season is Coming, Will You Be Ready?

We’ve all seen how wildfires and earthquakes can devastate communities.

Are you prepared for a disaster? If you have just minutes to evacuate, do you have a “go bag” packed and ready with the essentials you will need including important documents you may need later?

Have you made a plan with your family about evacuating, meeting places, and phone contacts to relay status? Would you know how to determine if you need to shut off gas or water and how to do it properly?

The time to plan is BEFORE a disaster hits and Lamorinda CERT classes teach this and more.

Lamorinda CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Classes are open to residents and employees of the Lamorinda area. Registration is easy at classes.lamorindacert.org.

13th Annual Moraga Community Faire & Car Show Saturday, May 11, 2019

Located at the Rheem Shopping Center; this popular community event will have great live entertainment, art, wine, local food and beer and plenty of Food Trucks!

MEF Endowment Fund

The Moraga Education Foundation (MEF) Endowment Fund was established to create a self-perpetuating source of income for Moraga public schools. Donations, grants and bequests to the Endowment Fund are held for the lifetime of the Foundation. Since 2008, this fund has been managed by the MEF Endowment Fund Investment Committee. The committee members, Herb Gordon, Peggy Cabaniss and Gary DeWeese are longtime Moraga residents who each have significant investment and financial service expertise.

MEF is grateful for their years of dedicated service to the Foundation. Eventually, MEF plans to use a portion of the investment earnings as an additional source of annual funding. As such, a gift to the Endowment today will generate dividends to support the education of Moraga students into the future. 4th of July Celebration July 4th Fun Run

Join hundreds of Moraga residents for the annual 4th of July Fun Runs with either the 2-mile run/walk, 5-mile run, or Kiddie races! Sponsored by the Campolindo Track and Field and Cross Country programs, the Moraga 4th of July “Fun Run” races kick off Moraga’s day long 4th of July celebration.

Activity Guide Family Camp Out

Saturday, July 27, 2019 2:00 pm to 10:00 am (overnight) Rancho Laguna Park Join us for a suburban camping experience at Rancho Laguna Park with your family!

You will enjoy family games, crafts for the kids, and a camp fire under the stars. Dinner, s’mores, and continental breakfast provided.

Families should bring camping equipment including a tent and sleeping bags, as well as extras such as chairs, flashlights, snacks, a change of clothes and personal items. No pets are allowed at the family camp out.

Check-in begins Saturday at 2:00 pm with activities starting at 3:30 pm. Check out Sunday by 10:00 am.

ALL FAMILY MEMBERS ATTENDING MUST BE REGISTERED BY JULY 19! Space is limited.

Leisure Sport Triathlon Saturday, August 31 11:00 am to 3:30 pm Moraga Commons Park

Registration open now and ends August 22, 2019.

Fee is $160 per team.

Join us for the Moraga Leisure Sport Triathlon; a fun spin on the traditional triathlon. Teams of four participate and compete in Bocce Ball, Cornhole, and Disc Golf. Check in at 10:30, event starts at 11:00 am. Teams rotate between the three activities throughout the day, ending around 3:30 pm. Participants will receive an event t-shirt, pint glass, and catered BBQ lunch. The winning team gets their names immortalized on the Leisure Sport Triathlon perpetual trophy.

Well-trained Town staff will lead your child in organized games, art, crafts, songs, and more all planned around a central theme for the week. Each week will also feature a field trip/ entertainment. Mini-Hawk Flag Football Camp Skyhawks Staff

Camp Kinder Cool

Los Perales Kindergarten Teachers Entering Kindergarten* Camp Kinder Cool is a fun-filled childcentered camp for children entering Kindergarten in August 2019 and run in partnership with Moraga School District Kindergarten teachers. Children participate in a variety of activities while singing and dancing their way through the week.

Language, math, and developmental activities are designed to give each child a feel for the structure, routine and expectation of Kindergarten as they get to know the teachers, classroom, and new friends. Fees listed are for one week of camp. *For those entering Kindergarten at Los Perales in the Fall only. Due to construction at Rheem and Camino Pablo schools, Camp KinderCool will not be offered at those locations in 2019.

This program was created to give young athletes a safe and positive first step to “America’s Game.” We have created age-appropriate drills and games that teach beginners the fundamentals of football in a safe environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun! Our development objectives include passing, rushing, receiving, flag pulling, agility, balance, body movement, coordination, self-esteem, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Skyhawks Flag Football is a positive introduction to the exciting game of football. Our innovative games develop the player’s skills, confidence, and passion for the game, all in a safe environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on FUN! The focus of this two week camp will be the production of a full length fairy tale called “The Magic Drops.” Each day will include rehearsal time, creative drama, theater games and storytelling. Drama performance on Friday, August 9, early evening (time TBD).

Little Medical School—Discover the fascinating science of the human body with Little Medical School! Through hands-on crafts, games and role playing, participants will learn STEM concepts in a fun and unique way! From broken bones, to stitches, there’s something for every future healthcare provider and science lover. Each student will receive a working stethoscope and a variety of projects and tools. $25 materials fee due to instructor on first day of camp.

Little Vet School—Join Little Veterinarian School for interactive role playing, crafts and games to learn about dog care and veterinary science! STEM concepts are introduced in a fun way, inspiring future veterinarians and animal lovers. Topics include basic veterinary care, tick removal, understanding dog behavior, and more!

Each participant will receive a stuffed animal puppy and a variety of projects. $25 materials fee due to instructor on first day of camp.

Games and Animation with Scratch— Have fun learning how to create computer programs! We will design and construct dynamic, animated stories with backgrounds, characters, and sound effects!

Students will learn the fundamentals of computer programming using MIT’s fun and easy drag-and-drop Scratch platform.

Games and Animation with JavaScript— Have fun learning how to write computer programs! Explore writing code to create dynamic, animated digital art and web pages with images, shapes, sounds, and text. Create mini-games in a web browser and make our game characters move and jump.

Speedy Robots with JavaScript—Have fun programming a robotic ball with JavaScript!

Write code to make it spin, change colors, and find its way out of a maze. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer programming and will see how the commands that they issue directly control the robotic ball.

Hacking Minecraft with Python—Have fun learning how to write computer programs!

We will explore designing simple games and writing code to have Minecraft do fun and useful things! Students will learn computer programming using the versatile language, Python, and will be able to immediately see the results of their code.

Age 6–12

A.I. Robots with Python— Have fun programming a robotic forklift with Python!

Write code to make it move objects and use Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to scan and recognize the environment. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer programming and will see how the commands that they issue directly control the robot.

Augmented Reality and Games with Swift—Have fun learning how to write computer programs! We will write code to make our game characters move, jump, and navigate intelligently! Explore Augmented Reality (A.R.) and touch, sound, and camera sensors.

Kidz Love Soccer Kidz Love Soccer Staff

Age 2–7

All participants receive a KLS jersey!

Mommy/Daddy & Me Soccer—Introduce your toddler to the world’s most popular game! As you participate in our fun age-appropriate activities, your child will be developing their large motor and socialization skills.

Tot Soccer—Little tykes will enjoy running and kicking! Encourages large motor skill development through fun soccer games. Shin guards are required after the first meeting.

Pre-Soccer—Teaches the basic techniques of the game and builds self-esteem through participation and fun soccer activities. Shin guards are required after the first meeting.

Online Driver’s Ed Safety Driver’s Ed

Age 15+

DMV allows Teens to receive their Learner’s Permit at age 15½ and a License at age 16.

This class is the FIRST, required step that must be completed. This is an online course with videos, animated driving scenarios and sample test questions. Learn the rules of the road, major causes of traffic collisions, DMV procedures and much more.

A licensed instructor is available to answer any questions. Receive DMV-approved Certificate of Completion. Sign up any time.

Registration is ongoing. Once you register, Safety Driver’s Ed will email you to set up an account with them to start the training.

Jeanne Dowell, former instructor under US Olympic committee is a pioneer in the yoga movement within the Lamorinda area, has studied throughout the world including the Iyengar institute in India. Basic principles of the unique Iyengar system and how it applies to the aging process will be taught.

She combines her experiences with zen in her teaching. Emphasizes stress reduction, strength, and relaxation. Handouts and mini class ideas for those interested to do at home.
