Election of Town Councilmembers

On November 3, 2020, Moraga voters will elect three Councilmembers. The nomination period will begin on Monday, July 13, 2020 and end at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 7, 2020. However, if one of the incumbent officeholders does not file by the August 7 deadline, the nomination period for that vacancy will be extended (for any qualified person, other than the incumbent) until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

Nomination Papers can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s office during the nomination period by appointment only.

Candidates must be registered voters of Moraga at the time the Nomination Papers are issued.

Town Crier Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District

Fire season is almost here. Now is the time to start working on creating or enhancing your defensible space. You can help your home survive a wildfire by removing the combustible fuel next to your home and removing the receptive fuel beds that are present around your home. The fire district offers a free chipper service for residents doing fuel reduction work on their property.

• Cut bushes, shrubs and trees so they are separated and do not create a “fire fuel ladder.”

• Maintain roofs and gutters free of dead leaves and pine needles.

Parents for a Safer Environment

Parents for a Safer Environment (PASE) protects the health of our children, pets, wildlife, workers and environment by working to reduce exposure in primarily Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. PASE is working with Jodi Nelson of East Bay Neighborhoods for Responsible Technology to address 5G cell antennas.

Moraga Pear Harvest

Come pick pears for the Contra Costa & Solano County Food Bank on August 8 & 9.

Volunteers will harvest our local fruit from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the corner of Canyon Road and Camino Pablo. This annual event is sponsored by the Moraga Park Foundation and the Kiwanis Club. Sturdy shoes and work clothes are recommended.

Moraga Day Camp

Adventure Awaits! Join us for weekly themed adventures at Moraga Day Camp this summer.

Moraga Day Camp, Ages 8–11 • Moraga Day Camp Jr., Ages 5.5–7 Well-trained Town staff will lead your child in organized games, art, crafts, songs, and more all planned around a central theme for the week.

Each week will also feature a field trip on Wednesday. Daily rates and extended care are also available. Friday drop-off at Moraga Library, with pick-up at Moraga Commons Park Picnic Area. Please send campers with lunch and two snacks. All campers must be registered by the Thursday before the camp week starts.

Science of Pokemon—Ever wonder how Magnemite can attach himself to power supplies and metal? Or how Oddish is able to absorb all the nutrients from the ground?

What about Fearow and how he can soar? In the Science of Pokémon®, kids will learn about some of their favorite Pokémon® characters and how their powers work. For each lesson in this STEM based class, students will conduct different experiments related to specific Pokémon® characters. Basketball Camp

The focus of the camp will be the production of a fun and creative version of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK. In addtion, each day will include creative drama, theater games and storytelling.

Learning the fundamentals of Basketball has never been so much fun. Through a series of age-appropriate drills and skillbased games, boys and girls can tip off their Basketball career in a positive environment with lots of encouragement. Skyhawks coaches keep kids engaged and entertained while developing their dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense, self-esteem, and love for the game. Get your art on—develop skill proficiency in drawing and painting! Art Skills Camp teaches skills in anime, architecture, cartooning, watercolors, and acrylics. Each day, the artists will continue to build on their drawing and painting skills to create rich artwork. For example, in cartooning, we start with the basics of how to draw with simple shapes, then add faces and different expressions, and finally, add in a body performing different actions. Participants will finish the week with a beautiful art portfolio to take home.

Artistic expression meets the unique capabilities of the digital format! In KidzToPros, Digital Arts class, students learn how to use a graphics tablet with a digital pen, transforming their creative ideas with digital effects. Students learn traditional art skills, but with many exciting digitally enhanced possibilities. They are introduced to various brushes, effects, and layers, along with the basics of art, such as color theory, perspective, contrast and more.

Each day has an assignment, introducing new lessons, which build upon their prior work. By the end of the session, students will have a beginner’s proficiency level in digital drawing skills.

Learn graphic design skills by creating fun, original digital visuals! Graphic design is a highly sought-after skill! KidzToPros Graphic Design Camp introduces students to the basic principles of graphic design, including lines, shapes and fonts, color, contrast, spacing, alignment and balance. Students will learn to create their own business cards, flyers, posters cards, animations and more. They will develop an eye for best practices in creating effective designs and grow their digital creativity as they make beautiful, purpose-driven custom visuals.

By the end of the class, students will have a basic proficiency of creating design features with shapes, layouts, colors, and more in professional design software.

Learn 21st century problem-solving, design and coding skills with Wonder League Robotics! Coding is the new teams sport!

KidzToPros Wonder League Robotics Camp teaches programming and robotics thru the use of Dash—a STEM robot. Students will be formed into teams of up to five students and will learn how to program their robot in a series of increasingly complex missions that encourage creative thinking, problemsolving and teamwork. Teams build courses and attachments to the robot, helping them grow as problem-solvers and innovators!

All teams will virtually participate in an international Wonder League Robotics competition with prizes. KidzToPros will also sponsor a local competition with teams from multiple schools. Kids will use their creativity to program their team’s robot to complete a variety of tasks and competitions!

Python is one of the fastest growing programming languages, widely used by developers across academia and in the tech industry. It is also one of the easiest programming languages to learn! In KidzToPros’ Intro to Python course, students will learn foundational programming skills such as data types, recursion, and conditionals, as well as how to plan and execute projects. By the end of the program, students will have the education and experience to jump start them toward a lifelong interest in computer science! GRADES 6 to 8. Basic computer science foundational skills. Learn what an algorithm is used for, and develop your own. Introduction to recursion. Explore how programming can help your personal life. Put your best foot forward online—learn the nuts and bolts of creating an engaging website! KidzToPros Web Design Camp teaches students how to create dynamic and visually-appealing websites. They’ll learn the foundations of front-end web development and how to design and create their own web page by considering layout, responsive pages, visuals, dynamic content and more. Students will not only use three different programming languages (HTML, CSS and JavaScript), but they will also learn how they all work together to create beautiful and purpose-driven web pages.

By the end of camp, students will be able to program a publishable website. They will also create a portfolio website and showcase their programming projects! GRADES 6 to 8 (2-week camp). Use HTML to create content.

Intro to Machine Learning KidzToPros

Age 11–14

Teach your computer to learn with KidzToPros Intro to Machine Learning with Python!

KidzToPros Intro to Machine Learning Camp builds off of a student’s knowledge of Python programming and introduces them to how computers can learn. Students will discover how machine learning uses data to teach the computer to think and act without being explicitly programmed. The week-long camp will deepen students’ understanding of computational thinking and logic. By the end of the week, students will be able to create machine learning models for prediction and decision-making. The experience gained from this machine learning camp will help accelerate students into more complex coding courses. Basic Python proficiency is a prerequisite to participating in this camp (see our Intro to Python Camp!) GRADES 6 to 8. Use Scratch to visualize machine learning programs. Use Python to explore binary trees. Use AI to make predictions and comparisons.

Join Susan and Sal Captain at their family vineyard in Moraga, the visit will include an intimate look at how grapes are grown and wine is made at a small, family-owned vineyard. Participants will learn how a healthy vineyard is developed, about wine processed using green and sustainable practices, and expand on the newly recognized Lamorinda American viticulture area (AVA). Jeanne Dowell, former Instructor under the US Olympic Committee brings a unique approach to her classes. Jeanne teaches the practice of yoga and mindfulness and show specific ways of integrating these into our daily living. Jeanne has studied throughout the world in developing her approach, using yoga, meditation and mindfulness as her path to healthy aging. Candlelight meditation and relaxing once a month in each session. Strength, stamina, flexibility, and posture are all part of healthy aging.
