The Funny Side of Getting Older If You Can’t Laugh at Yourself, Everyone Else Will Growing older is a funny thing.

When you’re twenty-five, you think fifty-five is ancient.

By the time you’re fifty-five, you wonder why twenty-fiveyear-olds think they know everything.

Perspective changes with age.

So does your warranty.

One of the biggest surprises about getting older is discovering that your body and your mind no longer seem to be on the same shift.

Your brain says, “Let’s build a deck this weekend.”

Your knees answer, “Absolutely... but we’re going to need Monday, Tuesday and probably Wednesday to recover.”

Now every room has a different device, and somehow none of them talks to the others.

You need one remote for the television, another for the sound bar, one for streaming, and a smartphone just to figure out why none of the first three are working.

You’ve been buying peanut butter in the same aisle for ten years.

By the time everything is finally connected, you’ve forgotten what you wanted to watch.

You spend twenty minutes wandering around convinced someone has stolen the peanut butter.

Grandchildren don’t help much either.

By the time you find it, you’ve forgotten why you came in.

“Grandpa, it’s easy.”

Of course, forgetting things becomes a regular part of life.

Suddenly it’s beside the pet food.

You walk into a room with absolute confidence...

Speaking of grandchildren...

Still nothing.

Three days later, while making toast, the answer suddenly appears.

Technology has also become an interesting adventure.

Remember when the television had three channels and one remote?

Actually, you were the remote.

Because every time someone asked me that question, another one fell out.

Children also have no concept of diplomacy.

They’ll pat your stomach and announce to an entire grocery store, “Grandpa, your tummy’s getting really big.”

I’ll remember that Christmas shopping around.

So you walk back to where you started.

It’s their turn now.

Restaurants are different too.

Years ago, you ordered the biggest steak on the menu.

Today you’re looking for two things.

Something that won’t upset your stomach... ...and somewhere quiet enough to hear the person sitting across from you.

Nothing makes you feel older than saying, “Could you turn the music down a little?”

And somehow becoming exactly like your parents.

Remember when they insisted on keeping every plastic container?

Now you’ve got a cupboard full of margarine tubs containing everything except margarine.

Buttons.

Christmas ornaments.

Loose batteries.

Mystery screws from a project completed in 1998.

One day you’ll finally throw them out.

Driving has its own surprises.

Probably.

There comes a day when you pull into a parking lot and choose the spot closest to the entrance.

Speaking of collections, every garage seems to contain a box labelled “Important Cables.”

Not because you’re lazy.

You own more bird feeders than lawn chairs.

And every conversation somehow circles back to the weather.

“It’s a dry heat.”

So the next time you forget where you left the car keys...

The Moose Jaw & District Senior Citizens Association With Fall approaching our activities will be up and running including: Bingo which is held twice a week and is open to anyone 12 years of age and over. Join in the fun on Monday afternoons, 1:30 to 3:30 and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30.

Pickleball is offered five days a week. We are a friendly, non-competitive, fun-loving group.

Mah Jong players meet twice a week. Come join in the fun.

Cards Our members play Canasta twice a week and Texas Hold’em runs Thursday evenings 6:30 pm until 8:30 pm.

Arts & Craft Sessions run daily with sessions offering drawing & painting, paper tole, and quilting. A group of knitters and crocheters meet in our café every Wednesday afternoon.

Upcoming Events Grand Rebranding of the Moose Jaw Co-op Community Café Youth Dart League starting in September. Bring your grandkids down for darts while you take a few laps around the track.

National Seniors Day is October 1, stay tuned for plans.

Fall Supper October 17 with two seatings: 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm. The meal will feature turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, turnips, carrots, a selection of salads, and a selection of pies and cakes. Cost is $25.

A Senior’s Guide to Getting Ready for Winter Driving in Moose Jaw

Fluids fit for frost - Have your fluids, yes plural, checked this fall. Full synthetic oils in your engine, transmission, and hydraulic power steering system, can help your vehicle operate smoother this winter.

Coolant Check - Fresh coolant flowing through the engine can help ensure proper corrosion protection for your vehicles cooling system and warm interior temperatures for you.

Clear Vision – Fresh wiper blades and winter grade windshield washer fluid are a must have when the snow flies, or the slush does, keeping your windshield clear so that you can see what’s coming next.

Battery Health – Don’t let a weakened battery leave you stranded in the cold. Have your battery tested and replaced as needed to ensure your vehicle will start in minus 30. If you don’t plan to do a lot of driving, speak with Lorrie about a battery maintainer to help your battery survive shorter trips.

Block Heater Operation – When minus 20 hits, much like your warm winter coat, your engine wants some warmth as well. Block heaters are designed to keep the fluids in your engine warm to assist with those cold morning start-ups.

Road-Side Emergency Kit – A blanket, flashlight, booster cables, a shovel and an extra pair of gloves can be a life saver.

Traction on Snow & Ice – Have your tire conditions checked to ensure that you have you best chance of going, and most importantly, stopping on the icy roads.

Your season to connect: Fall and winter at the Cosmo Senior Centre As golden leaves give way to crisp winter mornings, the Cosmo Centre remains a warm and welcoming haven for Moose Jaw’s 55-plus community. Whether you’re looking to share a laugh with friends, try something new, or enjoy a favorite pastime, the Centre’s ever-growing calendar of activities offers something for every interest and every season.

Seasonal highlights add extra opportunities to the calendar.

In the fall and winter, dances/cabarets, festive Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners brighten even the chilliest days.

When the weather turns warm, summertime barbeques and Canada Day celebrations – complete with live entertainment – bring the community together.

Since opening its doors in the mid-1960s, the Cosmo Centre has been a cherished gathering place where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and local talent shines. Inside, two spacious halls – one seating up to 330 guests and a smaller hall for 100 – and can be combined to host up to 430 people, making the venue ideal for everything from intimate card games to lively concerts. Two inviting meeting rooms (for 20 or 80 people), a dance/yoga studio, and a fitness room add even more ways to stay active and engaged, especially during the cooler months.

No visit to the Cosmo Centre is complete without visiting the COSMO COFFEE SHOPPE for a slice of homemade pie, tarts or other sweet treats offered fresh on Thursdays.

Throughout the week, stop in for a coffee and cookie or dessert from the dessert cart. Also, be sure to stop in on Tuesdays for lunch at 11:30am. Single serving meals are also available daily for eat in or take out.

The Centre’s programming keeps the community moving, mingling, and making memories all year long. Weekly jam session/old time dance party, cornhole games, floor shuffleboard, fitness classes (chair yoga, tai chi, Forever in Motion), pickleball, and line dancing offer fun ways to stay fit.

Social Prescribing - Making a Difference in and around Moose Jaw SSM (Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism) is in the middle of a 4-year initiative establishing Social Prescribing pilot initiatives in 12 communities, diverse in size and location. Communities are: Shaunavon, Moose Jaw, Regina, Candle Lake, Battlefords, Saskatoon, Nipawin, Estevan, Regina Indigenous, Swift Current, Yorkton and a 12 th community beginning this summer. Funding for the initiative limits its focus to older adults 55+, but all involved know that in the future social prescribing can and should be available to all ages.

Social Prescribing is a way for health professionals and others to connect people in need with local activities, services and support. Instead of just giving medical prescriptions, they can send a social prescription to a community connector who works with the person to create a health and well-being plan that fits their needs.

Health extends beyond purely medical considerations. These are commonly referred to as the Social Determinants of Health and include: healthcare access, finances, housing, community and social context, employment, physical health and physical environment.

Care of the Elderly Physician, Moose Jaw Dr. Kimberley Higgins commented on how social prescribing can help busy physicians find creative ways to help with patients’ diverse needs.

She said, “I’m always going to be talking about optimizing cognitive health and as part of that, the advice is often what we would call non-pharmacologic strategies. So, I’m talking to patients and their families about exercise, nutrition, socialization and the impact that social isolation has on cognitive health. Keeping up with what community services are and how they are changing is not something that I, or the next medical practitioner, has the bandwidth for, so I’m really happy to have someone to tap on the shoulder to delegate those questions about how and what suits the patient.”

The Community Connector will help the individual connect to services, supports and programs identified in the health and well-being plan. Participation in activities such as low impact sports, volunteering, arts, gardening, book clubs all enhance well-being and reduce dependency on medical services. Connections to affordable practical services such as meal preparation, housekeeping, yard work or minor renovations can also reduce stress.

How Does Social Prescribing Work in Moose Jaw? Moose Jaw was one of the first two communities to begin social prescribing, so they have had significant experience which has been shared as everyone learns from one another. There is no rigid template for communities, but rather a cooperative network that supports the unique way in which each community carries out the essential functions of social prescribing.

Robbie gets referrals from the medical professionals, such as doctors, nurses, home care, EMS, pharmacists, as well as police, firefighters or community leaders, family members and sometimes, self-referrals. Robbie said, “Increasingly I receive inquiries from family members asking what kind of resources do we have in the community? As the community connector I know who and how to connect them with resources.”

Jim described his feelings, “You don’t know how good it is to hear a person’s voice. Conversation is the best thing – it brings you back to where you should be.”

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. Things You Need To Know About Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease can seem rather mysterious. For starters, it’s hard to diagnose since the only way to be certain someone had it is to physically examine their brain after death. And even once you’re told that you have it, your prognosis will probably be murky, because it impacts everyone differently. Meanwhile, friends and loved ones may have a hard time understanding why your posture, expressions, or even emotions seem to be changing. That said, there are some things experts definitely know about the disease.

Some symptoms include essential tremor, restless leg syndrome, and Huntington’s disease.

Parkinson’s is somewhat common, as it impacts about 13 out of 100,000 people, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Since it’s usually diagnosed after age 50, rates are expected to increase as people are living longer.

In a healthy brain, the nerve cells (neurons) that help you move around make a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine acts as a messenger, sending signals from one section of the brain to another. In people with Parkinson’s, those neurons get damaged or die off, so you end up with a shortage of dopamine—and the normal pattern of messages gets disrupted. As a result, you can no longer move around smoothly.

When most people hear about Parkinson’s, they automatically picture shaky hands. But there’s far more to this illness, says Steven Schechter, MD, coauthor of Understanding Parkinson’s Disease. “While Parkinson’s disease definitely causes motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and slowness of movements, there are some non-motor symptoms that may occur as well. These might include loss of smell and constipation, as well as dryness of skin and even cognitive loss.” Schechter also notes that Parkinson’s patients have a higher risk of skin cancer and should be screened regularly.

About 30 to 40% of people with Parkinson’s also battle depression (compared to about 6.7% in the general population), according to a 2009 study at Hebrew Healthcare.

“There’s still a lot of stigma, and you lose work, friends, dignity, balance, driving, and more,” says Pamela Atwood, a gerontologist and Director of Dementia Services. She adds that many patients are crippled by the fear that they’ll lose their independence and become wheelchair bound. “These fears can be substantially lessened with information from support groups,” she says.

Research has shown that exercise helps people with Parkinson’s feel better and improve their gait, balance, and coordination. It often has emotional benefits, too. After Judy George was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 10 years ago, “I cried. I came home and threw myself on the bed and cried some more and really didn’t want to get out of bed for a couple of days,” she says. “It took me a good couple of years to get over the grief.” But then she heard of a boxing program designed to help people living with Parkinson’s at her local club. “I can’t live without it,” she says. “I feel stronger. I’m definitely benefitting from it physically and emotionally.

There’s no question.”

Parkinson’s disease itself won’t kill you, though it does sometimes lead to complications—like trouble swallowing and dementia— that can be fatal. “This is not a death sentence,” says David LeMaster, PhD, a novelist and college professor who developed early-onset Parkinson’s in his 40s. “I plan to continue writing, even after the shaking keeps me from typing and after the disease robs me of the ability to speak. I will fight with every part of my body. [Parkinson’s] is a hindrance, but we all have obstacles in our lives. It is what I’m dealing with, and is part of me, but it is not a tragic situation.”

The Parkinson’s Caregiver: Ways to Help Your Loved One It goes without saying that you want to do your best to help your loved one with Parkinson’s disease. But what does that mean in a practical sense?

For most of us who aren’t natural-born caretakers, we need some time to learn the best ways to help a spouse or partner deal with a challenging diagnosis. Here are tips on how to be a better caregiver from experts at the John Hopkins Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Center.

Be Honest with Each Other A trap some caregiver-patient partners can get into is one person becoming the “nurse” while the other is demoted to helpless patient. That’s not productive and can end up being harmful if, for example, the caregiver takes on responsibilities that the person with Parkinson’s is perfectly capable of doing.

As a caregiver, try to start an open dialogue for tough (but important) converdations with your loved one where you come to an agreement about when the loved one truly needs help.

Educate Yourself Investigate educational materials that can help you understand the disease and its likely progression. You can start with nonprofits.

If your loved one is receiving care at a center of excellence for Parkinson’s disease, and even in many other cases, you’ll have access to a library of literature you can use.

It’s very important to get accurate information because Parkinson’s is a complex disease, and what works for one person may not work for the next. All of the national groups are great resources.

Attend Doctors’ Appointments Even if, at the beginning, your loved one is capable of getting him or herself to appointments, go along to ask questions, take notes, and share your unique perspective on symptoms or other issues that your loved one may not bring up, such as sleeping problems or mood disorders. Keep a running list of questions to bring with you.

It’s also helpful to have a calendar (paper or digital, whatever works!) to keep track of physician and therapy appointments. You can also use a calendar to track medications and keep notes about any side effects.

Stay on Top of Insurance If you were always the one who handled questions of insurance coverage, great — but if not, you may want to familiarize yourself with the terms of your health insurance. You’ll need to know details about if and to what extent your plan covers prescriptions, therapy sessions and other unexpected items.

Be Observant Watch for changes in symptoms, abilities and moods. You should also carefully note your loved one’s changing abilities, especially after changes in medication or therapy. The Golden Vantage: Why Every Day is a Gift

For many, the word “retirement” sounds like a closing chapter. But as we stand in the golden years of our lives, think about viewing it as the ultimate vantage point. We have spent decades climbing the mountains of career, parenthood, and personal growth. Now, we have the distinct privilege of enjoying the view, and more importantly, helping those behind us navigate their own trails.

Seizing the day doesn’t require climbing the tallest peaks or running marathons. It is more about making an intentional choice to find joy in the “ordinary extraordinary.” It is the morning coffee enjoyed in silence, the long-overdue phone call to a friend, or the book we finally have time to finish. When we wake up with gratitude, we teach our children and grandchildren a lesson they cannot learn in school: that life is not just about the destination, but the quality of the journey.

The secret to a fulfilling life, no matter your age, is connection. As seniors, we sit at the intersection of history and the future. Moose Jaw Fire Department Fire Safety Tips for Older Adults Knowing what to do in the event of a fire is particularly important for older adults. At age 65 and older, people are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large and with our numbers growing every year it's essential to take the necessary steps to stay safe.

Make sure a fire never starts by following these simple tips:  Don’t reach for danger! Wear tight-fitting or rolled-up sleeves when cooking and don’t reach over a hot burner. Always stay in the kitchen when you are cooking, never leave cooking food unattended. Cooking fires are the number one cause of fire injuries among older adults. If you need to step away, you should turn off the stove.  Always blow out candles before leaving the room.  Ensure items that can burn are one meter (3 feet) away from space heaters.  Avoid overloading the electrical outlets. Extension cords should be used only as a temporary connection.  Avoid running cords under rugs, which can damage the cord and cause a fire.  Install smoke and CO alarms on every level of your home, especially outside sleeping areas. Combination smoke/CO alarms are available and detect both hazards in one device. Test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly or if you hear a chirp.

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, and CO alarms every 7–10 years (check label) even if they are still working.  Know exactly what to do and where to go if there is a fire. Plan and practice your escape! Develop a home fire escape plan or refer to your building’s fire safety plan.  Know your local emergency number 9-1-1  If you smoke, do it outside and use large deep ashtrays. Don’t extinguish smoking materials in a potted plant.
