Farmers’ markets return for 2026 season with two weekly options for shoppers Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Residents looking to shop local this summer will have two weekly opportunities to purchase fresh produce, baking, handcrafted goods, and artisan products as a pair of farmers’ markets launch their 2026 seasons in Moose Jaw. Both markets began operating on May 30 and will run every Saturday throughout the summer, offering different locations and vendor selections for shoppers.

Moose Jaw Homegrown Farmers Market The Moose Jaw Homegrown Farmers Market opened its 2026 season on May 30 and will continue every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Thanksgiving weekend along the 400 block of Langdon Crescent beside the Moose Jaw Public Library.

Operating rain or shine, the market features local vendors who make, bake or grow their own products, offering residents an opportunity to shop directly from area producers, bakers, and artisans.

Organizers continue to accept vendor applications throughout the season. Vendors selling food products must complete a Five Hills Public Health Service application and receive public health approval before attending their first market.

Urban Cellars Farmers Market New to Moose Jaw’s farmers’ market scene this year is the Urban Cellars Farmers Market, which launched May 30 and will operate every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September in the Urban Cellars parking lot at 510 Home Street West.

Final Tutor-era hometown Snowbirds show sells out in under 10 minutes Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds’ July 11 hometown air demonstration at the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport sold out in less than 10 minutes as residents raced to secure tickets for one of the final hometown appearances of the iconic Tutor jets.

Organizers said the rapid sellout marked the fastest ticket sale in the event’s three-year history, underscoring strong public interest in the Snowbirds’ 55th anniversary season.

Roger Blager, president of the Moose Jaw Flying Club, said organizers anticipated strong interest but were still surprised by the speed at which tickets disappeared.

“Last year I think it took a couple of weeks,” Blager said. “We had no way of anticipating demand.”

The July 11 event coincides with the Snowbirds’ 55th anniversary season and what is expected to be the team’s final hometown performance featuring the iconic CT-114 Tutor aircraft. Public interest has intensified since the federal government announced on May 19 that the Tutor fleet will retire following the 2026 air show season, with the Snow-

birds expected to temporarily stand down while transitioning to the CT-157 Siskin II aircraft platform sometime in the early 2030s.

Officials confirmed there is no waiting list and warned the public to be wary of ticket scams. They also stressed that planning for the event began well before Ottawa announced the retirement of the Tutor fleet, leaving organizers little opportunity to adjust capacity in response to the heightened demand surrounding the aircraft’s final season.

Some residents have questioned why the event could not be relocated to 15 Wing Moose Jaw to accommodate a larger crowd. Blager said the situation is more complex than many people realize.

He explained that the large military

air shows many residents remember from previous decades operated under a different environment than exists today.

Airspace at 15 Wing Moose Jaw is now extensively used by the Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) program, which is delivered through SkyAlyne under contract with the federal government, creating additional logistical considerations.

“The reason the Snowbirds have been practising over the municipal airport from January to April, before heading to Comox, is that they needed another place to operate because that airspace is already full of training flights,” Blager said.

He added that the hometown event is organized by volunteers working in partnership with military personnel and airport stakeholders.

“People need to understand that we’re a volunteer team putting this together,” he said.

While the show itself is sold out, organizers are encouraging ticket holders to review attendance guidelines before arriving. Buses and limousines will not be permitted on site, passengers may not ride in open truck beds, and all attendees must arrive in the vehicle associated with their ticket.

Blager said organizers remain focused on delivering the best possible experience.

“Without us, there would be no show at all right now,” he said. “We’re doing our best.”

The July 11 event will feature the Snowbirds as the headline attraction, along with static aircraft displays and other aviation exhibits at the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport.

Health Foundation’s ‘Concerts in the Park’ returns for 31st summer season Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF) is preparing to bring music back to Crescent Park this summer as its longrunning “Concerts in the Park” series returns for a 31st season.

The free weekly concert program will begin June 17 at the Crescent Park Amphitheatre and continue every Wednesday evening through Aug. 19, featuring local performers while raising funds for health care initiatives at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital.

Concerts run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the exception of the Aug. 19 finale performance, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, with donations collected during each evening in support of local health care.

According to the Foundation, this year’s proceeds will help fund new hospital beds for patients receiving care at Moose Jaw’s regional hospital.

“These modern beds play a vital role in patient comfort, safety, recovery, and overall care, helping health care teams provide the best possible experience for patients and families,” the Foundation said in a release. “Best of all, every dollar raised stays right here in our community, supporting local health care close to home.”

Since launching more than three decades ago, Concerts in the Park has raised more than $150,000 in support of medical equipment and health care projects within Moose Jaw. Ryan Hrechka, chair of the MJHF, said the concert series continues to serve as both a fundraiser and a community celebration.

Returning as MC for the season is MJHF CEO Kelly McElree, who described the concerts as a longstanding summer tradition in the community.

Individuals are hired according to their expertise and ability to fulfill the job they were hired for.

But on today’s business environment, few organizations operate through the efforts of one individual alone. Most companies are made up of multiple departments, each with its own responsibilities, expertise, and objectives. When these departments work together effectively, the organization can achieve remarkable results. However, one of the greatest challenges facing managers is not

technology, budgets, or competition—it is managing interpersonal relationships among employees.

Every workplace contains a variety of personalities. Some individuals are naturally cooperative and team-oriented, while others may struggle with communication, trust, or collaboration. A common issue arises when employees become overly concerned with the activities of departments outside their own responsibilities. Rather than focusing on their assigned duties, they begin monitoring the performance of others, criticizing work habits, or acting as unofficial “office police.”

This behavior often creates tension, resentment, and division within the organization.

The reality is that most employees do not have the understanding of each department’s work responsibilities, challenges, or pressures faced by other departments. What may appear to be poor performance or lack of effort is often the result of circumstances that are not immediately obvious. When employees spend more time judging others than fulfilling their own duties, productivity suffers and workplace morale declines.

For managers, the solution begins with establishing a culture of respect and accountability. Employees should clearly understand their roles, responsibilities, and reporting structures. When expectations are well defined, there is less room for individuals to interfere in areas that do not concern them.

Managers must reinforce the principle that employees are responsible for their own performance first and foremost.

Communication is another critical component. Many workplace conflicts stem from misunderstandings rather than actual problems. Regular team meetings, crossdepartment discussions, and opportunities for collaboration can help employees gain a better appreciation for the work others perform. When people understand each other’s challenges, empathy often replaces criticism.

Managers should address negative behavior promptly and consistently. Gossip, fault-finding, and workplace policing should never be allowed to become part of the company culture. Employees should be encouraged to bring legitimate concerns to management rather than confronting coworkers or

spreading negativity among the staff.

Equally important is focusing employees on the organization’s shared mission. Every department contributes to a larger goal: serving customers, growing the business, and creating success for everyone involved.

When employees understand how their work connects to the company’s overall objectives, they are more likely to view colleagues as partners rather than competitors.

In some situations, managers may never be able to make everyone like each other.

Fortunately, friendship is not a requirement for a successful workplace. Respect, professionalism, and cooperation are. Employees do not need to be best friends; they simply need to work together effectively and treat one another with courtesy and respect.

Ultimately, the most successful workplaces are those where people focus on their own responsibilities, respect the contributions of others, and work collectively toward a common goal. A culture built on trust, communication, and accountability creates an environment where both employees and businesses can thrive.

Western Canadian Nationals car show set to make Moose Jaw debut Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

A major automotive event expected to attract thousands of visitors from across Canada and the United States is set to roll into Moose Jaw this summer as the Western Canadian Nationals (WCN) Car Show makes its Saskatchewan return.

Scheduled for July 31 to Aug. 2, the three-day event will be hosted at the Anderson Auto and Memorabilia Collection on the acreage of Mel and Cal Anderson near Moose Jaw. Formerly known as “Super Run,” the event was rebranded as the Western Canadian Nationals in 2025 to reflect its broader reach and growing national profile. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the event rotated between Brandon, Man., Saskatoon, and Red Deer, Alta.

While Brandon resumed hosting duties in recent years, organizers say bringing the event to Moose Jaw marks another step toward restoring the longstanding Prairie rotation.

“With its strong car culture and excellent amenities, Moose Jaw is an ideal location for an event of this scale,” the group stated in promotional materials for the show.

The weekend will begin July 31 with a meet-and-greet and registration package pickup, followed by the main public show days on Aug. 1 and 2. Gates will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, with organizers promising activities and attractions for visitors of all ages.

The event is being promoted as more than a traditional car show, with plans for a week-long automotive experience that will include tours and special events leading up to the main weekend showcase.

Anderson Auto and Memorabilia Collection was chosen as the host venue because of its combination of expansive outdoor space and its well-known collection of classic vehicles and automotive memorabilia.

Building Containers with Summer Exotics There is nothing better than planting a container full of exotic beauty to enjoy in your landscape all summer long.

Summer flowering bulbs and tender annuals will help you to do this as they bring a little bit of beauty that is a bit exotic. Most of these selections originate in sub-tropical or tropical regions so are used to warmth and humidity and of course will need to be lifted prior to the fall temperatures dropping substantially.

It is these bulbs that are often the “wow” points of our gardens. Who can ignore the tantalizing tropical scent of acidanthera, the wondrous colour of the begonias in the shady parts, or the majestic stature of the cannas or gladiolus?

If you are not yet growing some of these less hardy bulbs, then maybe this is the year to begin.

Acidanthera are exotic members of the iris family. They have a delicious scent that will waft over your outdoor areas if planted close. They are white (perfect for night gardens), grow about 24 inches high with a white star-shaped bloom with a centre of deep purple.

Theyare naturally found in semi-alpine conditions in Ethiopia so do not need a really rich soil. Plant them about 3 inches deep with about 5 inches between bulbs.

Begonias are gorgeous in the shady areas of the garden. They come in a range of colours from reds to pinks, yellows and whites and even a number of purples and apricots. The pendulous types are great in hanging baskets while the uprights are good in beds or containers. Plant in partial to full shade and be sure you do not plant them too deeply as they are a shallow-rooted plant.

Caladiums are a showy plant that will give any landscape a tropical flair.

They are actually grown for their large colour leaves. They come in multi-colours with swirls and splashes of red, green, white and pink. Plant them in the shade and even bring them in as a house plant as summer wanes.

Canna lilies are beautiful everywhere. Their bloom colours range from white to orange, yellow, pink red and even bi-colour. They are native to the West Indies and South America so are

considered not hardy. They are superb summer bloomers with not only a great bloom but often have coloured and textured leaves. Do not plant these plants in windy areas as the foliage will be damaged. Some species can grow up to 10 feet in height but can also be as small as 2 feet. Plant in full sun and remove spent flowers to encourage more bloom.

Oriental lilies are one of my favourite plants to incorporate into my outdoor space. The blooms will not last long, but placing them as part of the show is well worth the effort and the scents are too amazing for words.

Dahlias are easily one of the top selling summer flowering bulbs. There

are literally hundreds of selections to choose from with all the colours of the rainbow. Many gardeners will pot up their dahlias a good six weeks prior to going outside to ensure the longest, loveliest period of bloom. They are long blooming so can be planted in borders, beds or containers and even make a great cut-flower. Just a word of caution – once you begin to grow dahlias you might get addicted to trying them all!

Incorporating some other “exotics” like palms, crotons and other tropical plants not often seen outside is also a way to build unique elements into your outdoor space. Be creative and daring and mix some tropical plants in with some summer exotics and other regular basket stuffers to truly create a space you can call your own.

Moisture levels down in this region Ron Walter - For Moose Jaw Express

Wind and dry weather has impacted farming in the southwest region of the province.

The weather allowed seeding to advance faster than any other region, according to the Ministry of Agriculture weekly crop report.

Seeding in the southwest was 74 per cent completed

by May 25 compared with 52 per cent across the province.

Crop land soil moisture in the southwest was five per cent surplus, 56 per cent adequate and 26 per cent short.

That compares with the provincial average of 19 per cent surplus, 69 per cent adequate and six per cent short.

Hay land compares similarly with 64 per cent adequate in the southwest and 26 per cent short. Provincewide hayland is 14 per cent surplus, 70 per cent adequate and 16 per cent short.

Dry pastures

Pasture land moisture may force more sell-offs of cattle if rain does not blanket the southwest soon.

Southwest pastures are 59 per cent adequate and 34 per cent short. Across Saskatchewan the levels are nine per cent surplus, 68 per cent adequate and 16 per cent short.

Around Moose Jaw between one-quarter and onehalf an inch of rain fell during the week with a trace to one-quarter inch in the Coronach.-Avonlea-Briercrest districts.

Craik had just over two inches with an inch at Tugaske and just under an inch at Eyebrow.

Half of cereals crop growth is above normal development with 27 per cent of oilseeds in that state.

Seeding in still way behind in the east central region at 26 per cent with 25 per cent in the northeast region.

‘Your change can help local families’: A&W launches food bank campaign Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

A month-long fundraising campaign aimed at helping local families facing food insecurity is underway in Moose Jaw through a new partnership between the A&W Lakeview Road franchise location and the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank.

Beginning June 1 and continuing through June 30, customers visiting the restaurant will have the opportunity to support the food bank either by making a direct donation at the counter or by rounding up their bill to the nearest dollar.

According to organizers, all proceeds raised during the campaign will go directly toward supporting families in Moose Jaw and surrounding communities.

“Every small donation or roundedup bill can help provide meals and support to families facing food insecurity in our city,” said Toni Aquino, administrative services co-ordinator at the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank.

The initiative came together following conversations between representatives from the food bank and staff at the Lakeview Road franchise location, where Aquino said the response from management and employees “was immediate, and they were incredibly excited to partner with us.”

According to information shared with the Moose Jaw Express, food bank representatives decided to pursue a partnership after hearing positive feedback from residents about the restaurant’s involvement in local community initiatives. With assistance from crew member Christ Gonzaga, organizers later met with general manager Glenn Cagampang, who was eager to support the campaign.

“What made the conversation even more meaningful was learning that they had already been planning to connect with us in the near future,” Aquino said.

“We simply happened to reach out first.”

The campaign arrives during a period of continued demand for food bank services locally.

Earlier this year, officials with the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank reported that usage has continued to rise significantly over the past several years,

with the food bank now seeing approximately 1,000 visits each month. The organization has also noted that roughly one-third of those accessing services are children.

Aquino said partnerships between community organizations and local businesses are becoming increasingly important as more families continue to face food insecurity and rising living costs in Moose Jaw. She said even small contributions collected throughout the month can make a meaningful difference for residents relying on food bank support.

“In a time when community support means more than ever, this partnership is a great example of local businesses stepping forward to make a direct impact in Moose Jaw,” Aquino said.

The Moose Jaw and District Food Bank continues to provide emergency food hampers and related supports to individuals and families throughout the community, while relying heavily on donations, fundraising campaigns, volunteers, and community partnerships to maintain operations.

Recipes from newspapers before Google arrived Before the days of checking Google for a desired recipe, newspapers with home living sections served much the same purpose.

Many homemakers had a pair of scissors in hand as soon as they knew everyone in the house had read their favourite newspaper sections. Those clipped recipes were pasted in scrapbooks or glued to recipe cards for use at a later date.

A long time ago I received several such scrapbooks from readers who came across these treasures while cleaning out a family home.

This week’s recipes come from one of the scrapbooks.

••• CREAMY POTATO SOUP 1 1/2 cups water 2 cups diced potatoes 1/2 tsp. salt 3 tbsps. butter 1 cup diced onion 2 tbsps. flour 2 cups chicken stock 2 cups milk 1/8 tsp. pepper Boil the water and cook the diced potatoes with salt until soft.

Melt the butter in another large saucepan and fry the onions until soft. Stir in the flour and cook for one minute.

Add the chicken stock, milk and pepper, stirring constantly and cook until thickened. Add the cooked potatoes and potato water. Stir thickened soup, being careful it does not burn or stick to the pan.

Serve while very hot, with a slice of homemade bread.

For variations: add a tin of creamed corn to make corn chowder or add a tin of salmon, bones removed, to make a salmon chowder.

••• SCALLOPED ONIONS 2-3 large Spanish onions salt and pepper to taste 2 cups bread crumbs 1/2 cup butter, melted Remove the outer film from the onions. Boil the onions for 7-10 minutes or until tender.

Slice onions into rings then separate the rings gently. Place half of the rings in a layer in a greased pudding dish. Season with salt and pepper.

Cover with a layer of bread crumbs. Top with a layer of onions, seasonings and bread crumbs.

Pour melted butter on top and brown for 20 min-

utes in the oven set to 350 degrees F. Variation: Add some shaved cheese between onion and crumb layers.

••• SNACK COOKIES 2/3 cups shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg, well-beaten 1 tsp. vanilla 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 3/4 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup chopped dates 1 cup cornflakes 1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar.

Add egg and vanilla and beat well.

Mix in dry ingredients, adding corn flakes last.

Mix well.

Drop onto greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. Do not let them burn.

Makes about 30 cookies.

PSD True hangs up the leash after seven years of service with MJPS Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

After helping track suspects, locate evidence, assist in arrests and greet children at community events, one of the Moose Jaw Police Service’s (MJPS) fourlegged officers has officially completed her final shift.

Police Service Dog (PSD) True retired on May 24 following a seven-year policing career alongside her handler, Const. Aaron Woods. Woods himself is not retiring and remains with the service. The Belgian Malinois, now eight years old, joined the MJPS in 2019 and became a familiar face during operational calls and in community settings.

True’s retirement at age eight falls within the typical service range for police dogs, which often work about seven to nine years depending on health and operational demands.

According to information released by the MJPS, True and Woods built a close working partnership over the years while responding to a wide range of incidents throughout the city.

“Throughout their time together Const. Woods and PSD True formed a strong bond that was built on trust, discipline, and dedication to public safety,” the service stated.

True entered training with Woods in March 2019 during an expansion of the police service’s canine program. At the

time, the service was increasing from two canine teams to four, allowing canine officers to be available across all shifts.

Police service dogs undergo intensive training with their handlers before becoming operational. Earlier reporting on the unit noted teams complete approximately 16 weeks, or roughly 600 hours, of instruction focused on obedience, tracking, evidence searches, building searches, and criminal apprehension.

City weed control program begins June 1 Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The City of Moose Jaw’s annual weed control program is set to begin June 1, with crews expected to spray several public areas throughout the community as weather permits.

According to the city, the Parks and Recreation Department implements the comprehensive weed control program each spring and fall, along with additional treatments as required throughout the summer and fall.

Initial spraying areas include playgrounds with sanded areas, baseball fields, Rosedale Cemetery, pathways, medians, and city-owned parking lots.

The city noted that all affected areas will be placarded before spraying takes place. Residents are encouraged to keep

windows closed and avoid treated areas during spraying operations and for 24 hours afterward.

Recreational activities and public use may resume after that period. City officials said spraying is completed in a controlled manner to avoid drifting into surrounding spaces, and operations may be postponed if unfavourable weather conditions, including heavy winds, are present.

One publicly noted incident occurred in February 2021 when the MJPS canine unit helped locate a suspect who allegedly fled from a stolen vehicle and hid in a backyard. “(One) ran from a stolen vehicle and only wound up getting caught cold and tired hiding in a backyard. (One) in custody thanks to PSD True,” the MJPS K9 social media account stated at the time.

The police service said True repeatedly demonstrated courage and dependability while working dangerous incidents.

“During PSD True’s time at the MJPS she faced dangerous situations in the line of duty, always serving with courage,” the service stated. “Her determination and commitment to protecting the community earned her the respect of officers and citizens alike.”

Among the highlights of her career was the 2022 Canadian Police Canine Association national trials in Camrose, Alta., where she earned first place in obedience while also taking trophies in evidence locating and criminal apprehension categories.

While police dogs are often associated with high-risk incidents, True also became known for her work in the community.

The MJPS said she regularly participated in school visits, hospital appearances, and community demonstrations, becoming a recognizable ambassador for the service.

Now retired from active duty, True will remain with the Woods family where, according to police, her next assignment will involve considerably less running and considerably more relaxation.

“PSD True will now enjoy retirement at home with the Woods family.

She will spend her days relaxing, being spoiled, and continuing her role as a loyal companion.”

‘4 Paws Lottery’ returns to support Moose Jaw Humane Society operations Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS) is once again inviting residents to support animals in need through its annual 4 Paws Lottery, with organizers hoping this year’s campaign becomes the fundraiser’s biggest yet.

The lottery, one of the shelter’s largest annual fundraising initiatives, is now underway and will remain open until July 6 — unless all tickets are sold beforehand.

Executive director Dana Haukaas said the fundraiser plays an important role in helping the shelter meet the dayto-day needs of animals entering its care.

“Our 4 Paws Lottery runs at this time every year,” she said. “It is one of the shelter’s larger fundraisers and is really important to our day-to-day operations, supporting everything from vaccines and deworming treatments to

emergency medical care for the pets that come through our doors, as well as giving some of our more shy or overlooked dogs the gift of time to find their forever families.”

This year’s lottery offers five cash prizes, including four $500 draws and one $10,000 grand prize.

Tickets are available for one for $20, three for $50, or five for $75. Draws will take place July 6 at 1 p.m. at the shelter.

Haukaas said the organization has set an ambitious goal this year.

“We have a goal this year to sell out the lottery, so we have our fingers and toes crossed,” she said, before adding with a laugh: “Actually, I should say our fingers and paws crossed.”

Proceeds support shelter operations, including food, medical care, and everyday animal needs. The MJHS said those needs extend beyond emergency cases and include routine care such as vaccinations, deworming treatments, microchipping, and other services for more than 1,000 animals each year.

The shelter recently highlighted Flip and Flop, two kittens rescued near Besant Campground earlier this year after being abandoned in winter conditions and suffering severe frostbite injuries. After receiving extensive veterinary treatment and foster care, the pair eventually recovered and found a home together. More recently, the shelter also shared Bauer’s story, a young puppy abandoned with a fractured leg who required specialized surgery.

The MJHS has also pointed to Sandy, a shy dog needing extra time and repeated visits with potential adopters before feeling safe enough to trust. The shelter said proceeds from the lottery help provide the medical care, rehabilitation, and additional time that animals like these often require while waiting for a second chance.

Haukaas thanked local businesses for their role in supporting the fundraiser.

“We would also like to thank our amazing sponsors,” she said.

Mortlach woman’s legacy gift helps support future Moose Jaw Humane Society shelter A $10,000 bequest from a woman remembered for her love of animals, community involvement, and warm personality is helping support the Moose Jaw Humane Society’s (MJHS) vision for a new shelter.

Evelyn (Ev) Burbank, a resident of Mortlach, Sask., left the donation to the MJHS through her estate, becoming the latest supporter highlighted in the organization’s ongoing legacy donor series.

The gift joins several bequests received over the years that are helping support the shelter’s “Our Next Chapter Begins” campaign to build a modern replacement facility for the shelter’s aging building.

Executive director Dana Haukaas said the organization remains deeply appreciative of donors who choose to include the MJHS in their final wishes.

“Evelyn Burbank was one of those important people who left a legacy for the animals that will come through our shelter doors in the years ahead, and we are so grateful that she thought of us in her will,” Haukaas said.

Home-fried chicken in celebration of summer picnics On a rainy, windy day recently my online travels took me to a site that declared that International Picnic Month will be celebrated in the waning month of summer.

Another site indicated that no, this recognition of picnics actually happens in July when excellent weather conditions exist to promote a true, old-fashioned picnic.

Whatever the proper month for a celebration, it occurred to me that this household hasn’t been involved in what could be considered a good, old-fashioned picnic for several years.

Each time we drive into Wakamow Valley I look over at the picnic tables and barbecues and think that it would be fun to gather some friends and have a potluck picnic at one of those sites. Then we drive on and quickly forget until the next drive-by.

Upon reflections, one of the highlights of the end of the Sunday School season was the annual picnic, either at Besant Park, or in the backyard of one of the CPR houses beside the tracks in my home community. Those yards were large and beautifully maintained by the CPR families who lived in those houses.

At Besant there was the attraction of the swimming hole, a ball diamond and lots of space to run and play the games that were supervised by the parents.

Back at the CPR yards, we had some room for games but mostly the attraction was the food — no steaks or hamburgers on the barbecue —but food that came out of cardboard boxes or heavy hampers filled with ice to help maintain a level of food safety.

There would be sliced ham, fried chicken, sliced roast beef from a real cow without any thought to hormones or whether free run eggs were used in the egg salad sandwiches. Several varieties of potato salad would appear along with some vegetable creations in Jell-o. The dessert table would include chocolate cakes with thick icing, homemade cookies, watermelon slices and sometimes there would be the opportunity to roast marshmallows over an open fire that today would be against the law.

Each family was responsible for its own plates and cutlery — paper plates and plastic knives and forks came along some years later. And each family also brought some extra food and utensils just in case someone attended without realizing the traditional obligations. Definitely no one would go home hungry.

On a smaller scale, we as a family would often pack a picnic supper to be eaten at the park or beside the lake where fishing was attempted with nothing much caught besides weeds and a few paper bags. Sometimes the spur of the moment picnic would be sand-

wiches and some fruit. If planning were involved, fried chicken and potato salad held pride of place.

It seemed no one worried about food safety and today’s health inspectors would likely have had a meltdown with their tests of temperatures and storage.

We survived quite nicely, thank you, despite some obviously iffy habits.

But soon the thermally-lined hampers appeared, insulated carry cases and various sizes of freezer packs popped up in the stores. And on-the-spot barbecued steaks and hamburgers shoved aside the fried chicken.

The last picnic with homemade fried chicken for this household was the summer of 2013 when we journeyed to Shamrock Regional Park, found ourselves a secluded spot near a gigantic checker board and unpacked our picnic dinner: fried chicken, potato salad, lettuce salad, some vegetables in Jell-o, cake and watermelon. All was packed among frozen water bottles and ice packs in a thermal hamper and eaten off paper plates with plastic utensils — the best of both centuries.

And so I salute the picnics of the past and wonder if this summer we will enjoy a real, honest-to-goodness picnic with home-fried chicken and all the fixings?

Also just wondering who among us will prepare this feast and where it will be eaten!!!

Residents of Briercrest are preparing to welcome visitors from across southern Saskatchewan as the village’s annual Heritage Day celebration returns on Saturday, June 13, offering a full day of entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Organized by the Briercrest & District Museum, Briercrest Community Centre, Briercrest Community Rink, and local firefighters, the annual event serves as both a community celebration and a fundraiser supporting local facilities and programs. Activities begin at 10 a.m. and continue until approximately 7 p.m., with admission free for all attendees.

“It’s a busy day with lots going on,” said Heritage Day committee member and museum board representative Marge Cleave.

Cleave said one of the event’s biggest draws is the opportunity for visitors to experience a traditional small-town celebration while learning more about the community and its history.

“It brings people in to learn more about our museum and what’s available here in Briercrest,” she said. “It gives people a chance to see what life is like in

a small town and, if they’re interested, consider moving out this way. It’s really about sharing more information about Briercrest and the people who live here.”

According to Cleave, Heritage Day has become an annual tradition that brings together local organizations and volunteers while providing an enjoyable outing for residents and visitors alike.

“It’s a community event that we want everyone to come out and enjoy,” she said.

Located about 45 kilometres southeast of Moose Jaw, Briercrest was established following the arrival of the Canadian National Railway in 1911 and was incorporated as a village the following year. Named after the wild roses that once grew on a nearby ridge, the community is home to about 160 residents and continues to serve the surrounding area through several businesses, organizations, and volunteer-led initiatives.

City council recognized City Clerk Tracy Wittke during its May 26 meeting as she prepares to retire at the end of May after nearly 10 years with the City of Moose Jaw. Wittke joined the city as assistant city clerk in September 2016 and was promoted to city clerk and information access and privacy officer in November 2021.

Several councillors paused to recognize Wittke’s contributions, sharing their appreciation for her leadership, professionalism and years of dedication to Moose Jaw. Coun. Dawn Luhning said many residents — and even some elected officials — may not fully understand the breadth of responsibilities handled by a city clerk.

councillors sometimes believe that the clerk is simply a minute writer,” Luhning said. “This role actually consists of the following: election administrator, records custodian, compliance officer, legislative manager, public liaison — and that one’s underestimated, for sure — community historian and transparency keeper.”

Luhning described Wittke as professional, articulate, and possessing a strong sense of humour, adding that her work helped support transparency and accountability within municipal government.

Coun. Heather Eby also praised Wittke’s service and leadership within the clerk’s office.

“Wittke’s contributions have been integral to the effective functioning of council meetings and decision-making

Eby also highlighted Wittke’s efforts to update the appearance of council chambers, a project she said had been important to the retiring clerk.

“She promised me personally that it would happen before she left, and I’m pleased with that result,” Eby said.

“I know it was a project that was very dear to your heart, and it will probably be a legacy here for 100 years because it won’t get changed again.”

The city clerk serves as council’s chief legislative advisor and is responsible for overseeing council meeting procedures, maintaining official records, administering municipal elections, and ensuring compliance with provincial legislation.

City presses Ottawa for answers on Snowbirds transition Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

City council is seeking clarity on the future of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds after a May 19 announcement that the team’s Tutor jets will retire at the end of the 2026 season, with replacements years away.

During its May 26 regular meeting, council unanimously approved a motion brought forward by Coun. Patrick Boyle seeking greater certainty about the Snowbirds’ replacement program while reaffirming support for continued federal investments in national defence and 15 Wing.

The motion asks the federal government to provide greater certainty on the timeline and funding for replacement aircraft while exploring ways to minimize any gap between the retirement of the current fleet and the arrival of a new air demonstration capability.

Council’s request comes as key details remain unclear, including how many CT-157 Siskin II aircraft will be acquired and the overall cost of the replacement program. The Royal Cana-

dian Air Force has said it will continue attending air shows and public events during the transition period using other aircraft and personnel.

Council is also seeking assurances about the continued presence of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron in Moose Jaw. Mayor James Murdock was directed to forward council’s position to the prime minister and minister of national defence.

Boyle said he appreciated council’s willingness to waive the normal notice period so the issue could be debated immediately.

“I raised this today, and I appreciate my council colleagues for waiving the notice period, which is effectively what you would call an emergency debate or discussion on this topic,” Boyle said.

He said the May 19 announcement was presented as a positive development but left significant uncertainty.

“The announcement that was made at that time was positioned as a positive one, in that there was a renewal for the

Snowbirds. Our community, I can say unequivocally, would support that in every way, shape or form, but the reality is that within that announcement was great uncertainty,” Boyle said.

Boyle noted the federal government expects the replacement air demonstration capability to become operational “in the early 2030s.”

“The reality of the announcement was shutting down the Snowbirds after this season. For us in Moose Jaw, that’s a pretty serious thing — to walk into town and shut the Snowbirds down like that,” he said.

He referenced a previous federal investment of roughly $30 million in upgrades to the Tutor aircraft fleet, which had been expected to keep the jets operational through 2030. Federal officials said further life-extension efforts involving the aircraft’s engines, airframes, and escape systems became increasingly difficult as the fleet aged.

Boyle said the transition raises concerns for a community that has long

identified with the Snowbirds.

“As a kid who grew up on a farm just outside Moose Jaw, 11 miles southeast of the city, I grew up sitting in a grain truck watching the Snowbirds fly every single summer,” he said. “You would see them — it was a regular thing.

You got used to it. You’re connected to it.”

Coun. Dawn Luhning voiced support for the motion, saying residents want answers about what comes next.

“I think clarity is the key, and I have every confidence that everybody in our community wants that clarity around the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, so I welcome the motion and appreciate Coun.

Council’s motion now places those questions before the federal government as Moose Jaw awaits greater certainty about the future of the Snowbirds and the timeline for their transition to a new air demonstration capability.

Proposed updates to Moose Jaw’s Alcohol Use Events Policy could streamline approvals for some community events while aligning city procedures with current Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) regulations.

During the May 26 regular meeting of advisory and other committees, council received recommendations from the Community Services Advisory Committee, which voted May 4 to support several amendments to the city’s Alcohol Use Events Policy.

According to a report presented

by Recreation Services Manager Scott Osmachenko, the updates are intended to reflect current city practices, revise policy language, and clarify approval requirements for events involving alco-

hol sales or consumption in city parks, facilities, and non-city-owned property.

One of the more notable proposed changes would move the Kinsmen Arena bleachers from a “discretionary use” location to an “eligible use” location for community events involving alcohol service.

The report stated that city council has granted approval to the Moose Jaw Lacrosse Association for alcohol use at the location over the past three years without issues. Administration is now recommending future requests be handled administratively rather than requiring council approval each time.

Under the proposed policy, eligible locations for alcohol use events would include Hamilton Flats, Ross Wells Ball

Park, Memorial Field, Happy Valley Park, Temple Gardens Centre, and the Kinsmen Arena bleachers.

Locations still requiring city council approval would include Crescent Park, Bell Park, Elgin Park, Tatawâw Park, Pla-Mor Palace, the Kinsmen Sportsplex pool or lobby, the Kinsmen Arena surface, Yara Centre, and all other locations not specifically listed as eligible.

The proposed amendments also clarify that municipal approval for alcohol permits on non-city-owned property would now be administered through the City Clerk’s Office under a separate policy.

Additional proposed changes include updated insurance and site map requirements for organizers, revised legal

language related to liability, and updated definitions to reflect current SLGA terminology.

The amendments would also add language allowing the city to consider whether an event operator is local or non-profit when reviewing applications for events where alcohol is permitted.

Administration said the policy supports the city’s “Vibrant, Safe and Welcoming City” strategic plan pillar while helping ensure public safety through proper administration of SLGA regulations.

If approved by city council, the updated policy would replace the current version last reviewed in May 2023.

The City of Moose Jaw is preparing another round of maintenance work for the Centennial mural at the Crescent Park Amphitheatre as officials continue to monitor ongoing damage caused by water infiltration and peeling paint.

Located within Crescent Park, one of the community’s oldest and most historically significant public spaces, the amphitheatre hosts outdoor concerts and events throughout the summer months and features a mural depicting local history.

During the May 26 regular meeting

of advisory and other committees, council received recommendations related to the city’s 2026 mural maintenance program. Earlier, during the Community Services Advisory Committee’s May 4 meeting, mural maintenance artist Tonia Vermette said the Centennial mural has continued to deteriorate over time because of moisture-related damage at the amphitheatre site.

Planned maintenance work for 2026 includes touchups to damaged sections of the mural and the application of a protective varnish intended to help preserve the artwork and slow further deterioration.

Committee members also discussed possible long-term options for the mural as deterioration continues, including recreating the artwork and potentially

relocating it in the future.

No alternate location was identified during the discussion. Minutes from the May 4 committee meeting stated only that “a brief discussion took place regarding long term options for the mural, including the potential for future recreation and installation at an alternate location.”

No decisions regarding a future relocation or recreation of the mural were made at this time.

CITY HALL COUNCIL NOTES

THE NEXT REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING IS TUES. JUNE 9, 2026

Representatives from the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Corporation told city council last week that the organization’s plant renewal project is nearing completion despite construction-related disruptions throughout 2025.

The corporation’s 2025 annual report was presented to council and ultimately filed during the regular May 26 meeting.

According to the report, the multiyear Plant Renewal Project reached approximately 95 per cent completion by the end of 2025, with commissioning, system configuration, and remaining deficiencies expected to wrap up in early 2026. Construction of a new administration building is anticipated to continue into 2027.

The Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant supplies drinking water to Moose Jaw, Regina, SaskWater customers, and Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, serving more than 300,000 residents.

The original plant was built between 1951 and 1955 and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2025 after undergoing several upgrades over the decades.

The report states the renewal project is intended to modernize aging infrastructure, improve reliability, expand capacity, and meet future regulatory requirements. Officials said the aging plant faces growing treatment challenges tied to algae and seasonal taste and odour issues in Buffalo Pound Lake.

megalitres per day, up from 205, while adding greater process redundancy and resilience during peak demand periods.

Major upgrades include new clarifiers, ozone treatment systems, biologically activated carbon filtration, and a modernized control system.

The overall renewal project carries a price tag of approximately $325 million, including roughly $295 million in construction and equipment costs and another $30 million in engineering.

About $163.4 million came through federal and provincial infrastructure funding, with the remaining costs supported through loans backed by Regina and Moose Jaw. The transition to the new systems created operational challenges throughout 2025, including at least 20 planned shutdowns tied to commissioning and construction work. The report states those disruptions temporarily reduced plant capacity at times, forcing Regina to operate its emergency well system on 20 occasions and withdraw approximately 670 megalitres of water because of treatment limitations, water main breaks, and filter performance issues during commissioning.

The corporation said Moose Jaw water sales increased by 1.16 per cent in 2025, while Regina’s demand increased by 5.58 per cent. Moose Jaw received 5,288.97 megalitres of treated water during the year.

carbon filtration systems. Officials said the upgraded systems now provide yearround taste and odour treatment for the first time in the plant’s history.

The report noted that the corporation discontinued pre-chlorination in April 2025, contributing to a major reduction in trihalomethanes — regulated disinfection byproducts that can form when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic material in water. Average concentrations dropped from 78 micrograms per litre in 2015 to 15 micrograms per litre in 2025, well below Canadian drinking water guideline limits, while maintaining regulatory compliance and safe drinking water standards.

The corporation finished 2025 with an operating surplus of approximately $1.75 million, driven largely by lower chemical, utility, and sludge-management costs, along with higher-than-expected water sales.

The report also highlighted environmental initiatives including renewable electricity purchases through SaskPower and onsite solar generation supplying up to 10 per cent of the plant’s electricity demand.

The corporation is working to reduce wastewater discharge and sludge hauling through expanded water recycling systems. No sludge was hauled to the Moose Jaw landfill in 2025, and officials said the corporation is designing a dedicated onsite disposal area that could eventually eliminate long-term hauling needs altogether.

Despite the construction challenges, the corporation maintained full regulatory compliance in 2025, reported zero lost-time incidents during construction activities, and said no taste or odour events originated from the plant during the year.

Public art projects endorsed by council for city parks, arena, Sportsplex Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Several new public art projects, including a mural celebrating the Warriors’ 2024 championship season and youthcreated works focused on identity and belonging, are moving closer to installation following recommendations from the Community Services Advisory Committee.

During the May 26 regular meeting of advisory and other committees, council received recommendations supporting multiple mural proposals across Moose Jaw, including projects at Temple Gardens Centre, Sunningdale Athletic Park, Elgin Park, and the Kinsmen Sportsplex.

Warriors’ championship mural One of the largest proposed projects comes from the Downtown Moose Jaw Association (DMJA), which is seeking approval to install a mural honouring the Moose Jaw Warriors’ 2024 WHL championship on the north interior arena wall at Temple Gardens Centre near the Warriors & Legends Hall of Fame.

According to a city report, the mural would be created by artist Andrew Robertson and fully funded by the DMJA, including installation and future maintenance costs. Installation is anticipated between July and August.

Temple Gardens Centre general manager Shaunna Fritzler submitted a letter supporting the project, calling it “an important celebration of both team success and community pride.”

One proposal, created by lead artist Lukas Mushens, features a fourpanel poetry mural exploring themes of identity, self-expression, mental health, and belonging. The artwork is proposed for installation on the south side of the Sunningdale Athletic Park building.

A second proposal by lead artist Casper Garrett features a circular mural of a phoenix cradling the Earth and is proposed for installation at Elgin Park.

According to the proposal, the mural is intended to encourage acceptance, understanding, and care for others.

Project 104 has collaborated with the city for more than a decade and has created 14 site-specific murals throughout Moose Jaw aimed at helping reduce graffiti in public spaces.

Water-safety mural planned for Sportsplex The committee also endorsed a separate mural proposal from the North West Community Association for the Kinsmen Sportsplex. The project would feature a water-safety-themed mural designed by local artist Carly Jaye Smith for the hallway leading to the change rooms.

The city report stated the mural was developed in partnership with aquatic staff and that all project and maintenance costs would be covered by the association using previously secured grant funding.

Maintenance on existing murals In addition to the new mural proposals, the committee approved allocating up to $7,500 from the city’s public art maintenance budget for 2026 mural repair work.

Maintenance this year is planned for the “Old Time Threshing Bee” mural, the “For the Veterans” mural, and the “Centennial” mural at Crescent Park Amphitheatre.

During discussion, mural maintenance artist Tonia Vermette said the Centennial mural has continued to deteriorate over time because of water damage and peeling paint. Committee members briefly discussed possible long-term options, including recreating the mural and relocating it in the future.

All recommendations requiring council approval are expected to proceed to an upcoming city council meeting for final consideration.

The organization awarded $2,000 scholarships to each recipient through its 2026 Moose Jaw Co-op Scholarship Program, providing a total of $12,000 in educational funding.

A group of students is hoping new public art installations proposed for city parks will encourage young people to feel seen, understood, and less alone.

The latest proposals continue that approach while also focusing heavily on youth experiences, identity, mental health, and belonging.

Lukas Mushens The first project, created by lead artist Lukas Mushens, consists of four vertical panels combining original poetry and visual art inspired by personal experiences during high school.

The mural explores topics including anxiety, identity, emotional struggles, and self-acceptance.

“My hope is to install the mural on the back of the amphitheatre in Crescent Park or on the south side of the warm-up shelter at Sunningdale (Athletic) Park,” Mushens wrote in the project proposal.

“My purpose is to create something that people can relate to, using both literary and visual art, and to show people that they are not alone, that our stories matter.”

One section of the proposal explains that the poems were written from personal experience but are intended to resonate with others facing similar struggles.

is even though I wrote them for me, they are not just for me,” Mushens wrote.

“They might not apply to everyone, but those who need to see them, to know they are not alone, will connect with these experiences.”

The proposal states the mural also aims to encourage conversations around topics “most people shy away from,” while helping honour people’s lived experiences through public art.

One poem referenced in the submission, “You Wore Your Dress Today,” was inspired by a conversation with a young boy about self-expression and

clothing.

“I want more kids to grow up being as understanding and happy as this young boy,” Mushens wrote.

Casper Garrett The second mural proposal, created by lead artist Casper Garrett, features a circular image of a phoenix cradling the Earth. The mural would be installed either on the picnic shelter arch or water park building at Elgin Park.

Garrett said the artwork is intended to promote acceptance, empathy, and community connection.

“I want to encourage people to take care and show love to the people and world around them,” Garrett wrote in the proposal. “I think this mural will show people to have a sense of connection and love from something they don’t always see or feel.”

The mural uses bright oranges, reds, and yellows for the phoenix alongside deep blues and greens representing Earth and space.

According to the proposal, both murals will be created on durable Crezon composite panels designed to last approximately 25 years and coated with anti-graffiti protection.

If approved by city council, the murals are expected to be completed and ready for installation by June 10, weather permitting.

Moose Jaw City Planning Department Under Review

If you’re a developer and wondering why approving your development plans have been taking longer than normal you are not alone.

According to confidential sources at City Hall - who asked to remain anonymous in order to keep their jobs - there is a major review at the Planning Department underway.

A review that in the end could cost developers tens of thousands of dollars if not more to bring their projects up to the latest building code. For the City it’s a review that could turn out to be highly embarrassing if not more.

The review is underway after a former Planning Department employee allegedly failed to properly ensure proper

building codes and standards were applied to building permits. The alleged mistakes have led to a third party reviewing all plans approved by that employee in the Planning Department over the last two and a half years.

Worse yet for the department as an employee who quit allegedly deleted electronic computer files making it more difficult to complete the review.

The former employee will not be name as they have not had the opportunity to tell their side of the story.

A good portion of the review allegedly entails applying an outdated version of the National Building Code (NBC) to plans.

advised asbestos did not need to be remediated in an older building whereas a third party says it must be. The alleged problem was spotted after renovations were nearing completion and the asbestos is no longer easily accessible.

One developer - who asked not to be identified as he has to deal with the City - said the issue is frustrating. At the present time the developer is considering legal action against the City of Moose Jaw. Asked for comment on what MJ Independent had been told, Moose Jaw Mayor James Murdock’s office first asked to comment on Friday instead of on Tuesday. The Mayor then never responded on the issue.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request put in on the matter by MJ Independent was likewise not fulfilled. As an aside, the story will be updated when they arrive.

MJ Independent contacted the Ministry of Government Relations in Regina about the issue.

Although they could not comment directly about what is happening in Moose Jaw the Ministry did speak in generalities about the issue.

The Ministry laid out exactly what the NBC is.

“The National Building Code (NBC) establishes the minimum standard for building construction and address objectives for health, safety, accessibility for persons with disabilities, fire and structural protection of buildings and the environment,” the Ministry wrote.

The applicable Acts are set up so all parties work together in a shared responsibility manner.

The owner is responsible for compliance.

The municipality (local authority) is responsible for administration and enforcement.

Government of Saskatchewan is responsible for the legislative, regulatory and policy framework.

Building officials work for the local authority.

Architects, engineers, contractors

and trades people work for the owner.

No person who is required to comply with the CC Act or the regulations shall fail to comply with the code.

There is no grace extended from the NBC if the City makes an error the Ministry wrote.

The City’s role is to enforce the NBC with the Province assisting if required.

“The NBC adopted in Saskatchewan establishes standards for materials, assemblies and the performance of building components as well as establishing how the component parts are assembled to meet the objectives of the code.”

Adopted province wide in 1988 the NBC’s “administration and enforcement is delegated to municipalities (local authorities) who appoint licensed building officials.”

Under the Act mistakes made by local officials when approving plans fall upon the developer.

“Deficiencies must be rectified in order to meet the requirements of the Act,” the Ministry wrote.

Improper plan reviews and errors by the City could become very costly for developers according to applicable legislation.

Under Section 5 of the Construction Codes Act “An owner of a building or an owner’s contractor or employee is not relieved from the obligation to carry out any work that is within the scope of section 6 of the Act and section 38 of these regulations in accordance with the Codes by reason only of: (a) the granting of a permit; (b) the review of drawings and specifications; (c) the making of inspections; or (d) the absence or omission of any of the things mentioned in clauses (a) to (c).”

Politicians better get future power needs right An application by SaskPower Corp. for 3.9 per cent rate increases over two years has raised political controversy.

The New Democrats, a number of local government organizations and business groups have protested.

This is the first rate increase since 2017 so an argument can be made that SaskPower has done well to keep rates down without an increase for nine years.

What other area of life has not seen a cost increase in nine years? The modest rate increase seems to make sense.

From the rate application debate the New Democrat Opposition raised fears of future massive rate increases. The NDP says power rates will double over time.

Using information from a leaked report the NDP protested cost increases in the Sask. Party Government plan to re-jig coal-fired power plants to extend life 25 years until small nuclear reactors (SMRs) should be available.

The government apparently has hung its hat on SMR technology. The Sask Party seems to not trust solar power and wind power to meet our needs.

The NDP does.

Solar power and wind power electricity go to waste when produced at times when there is no demand. Batteries can store the power but at multi-billion dollar investments.

The leaked document showed excessive costs to extend the life of coal plants, according to the NDP. The Sask.

Party claims coal-fired plant extension is less expensive than the alternate natural gas.

Sadly, the study has not been made public in its entirety.

The NDP raged about the increased capital costs, increasing by $700 million.

Another argument can claim increased costs are caused by scarcity.

The New Democrats zeroed in on another aspect of the coal extension costs. The 25 year project will experience $26 billion costs, according to the leaked data.

Their calculation includes the costs of labour and fuel, which are regular operating costs, yet the NDP seems to believe they are outrageous. They ought to have had someone with accounting experience study the data first.

The power situation is muddy. Voters have to take the word of the government, or the NDP. Both play political games.

The future of power production in this province is not a matter for playing political games. The government needs to meet our needs for the next 25 years.

If they don’t get it right we could face the same roadblock as Newfound-

land-Labrador. That province signed a hydro deal decades ago with Quebec that has left the “Rock” without enough power for future industrial/resource development.

The Sask Party has two huge gambles with this coal file.

The federal government ordered coal-fired power plants be closed in 2029. Will Saskatchewan lose in court, or get an exemption from Ottawa?

Industrial carbon tax levies will impact future costs.

Saskatchewan stopped collecting carbon tax last year. A new agreement, affecting coal plants, needs to be negotiated. The carbon tax on coal was much higher than on other energy sources.

Voters don’t have enough transparency in this muddy scenario. Merely trusting politicians is not enough.

U13 Mustangs Squeeze By Chaos Green

They came from behind but the U13 Moose Jaw Mustangs defeated Regina Chaos Green 3 - 2 on Wednesday evening.

The win leaves the Mustangs in first place in the U13 division of the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League.

The noticeably pony-tailed Mustangs played a strong aggressive game which included numerous scoring opportunities.

“Honestly we came into it underdogs and we had a short bench and it was great to see the progress we had especially with the new kids. They’re really stepping up the same with our veteran kids,” Krysta Williams Mustangs’ head coach said.

The Mustangs are made up of 13 runners and a goalie. Teams are allowed to have up to 18 runners and two goalies.

Five of the Mustangs players are girls. Without the girls playing having a team would be difficult.

The short bench has had an effect

on the Mustangs but they’ve had APs (Associated Players) in the U11 division who have stepped up and fit in really well when needed.

“We are doing way better (now) than I thought we would be doing the entire time. So I’m really, really pleased with them.”

The three head coaches (mom coaches) also coach a girls team and

they’ve been working hard to get girls to take up the sport.

The five girls on the Mustangs are part of that effort.

“We worked hard to get them here and they’re just killing it. So it’s really nice to have them on the team and to stick around,” Williams said.

She said the Mustangs are welcoming to both girls and boys to come out and play lacrosse.

“They’re doing amazing it’s like some of the kids you wouldn’t even guess this is their first year (of lacrosse).”

First Period Bentley Kelly scored an unassisted goal for the Chaos Green at 6:33.

The Mustangs tied it on a Boston Olmstead goal assisted by Emerson Hlushko at 1:43.

Second Period Maurice Parisian scored an unassisted goal for Chaos Green with 43 seconds left in the period.

Brody Soper Tied it for the Mustangs at 14:03.

Mustangs Continue Perfect Streak Goes To 9 – 0

Practice makes perfect.

For the U17 Mustangs, practice has turned into a perfect streak as they recently defeated the visiting Weyburn Panther Drilling Thrashers 15 - 4.

The win gives the U17 division leading Mustangs a perfect 9 - 0 record in South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League action.

The Mustangs led 4 - 2 after the first period but the Thrashers were the first team to score.

The second period saw the Mustangs pick up their game and outscore the Thrashers 5 - 1 in the period. The score at the end of the period was Mustangs 9 and Thrashers 3.

The Mustangs continued to have superior offensive ball control outscoring the Thrashers 6 - 1 in the third period.

The final score was Mustangs 15 and the Thrashers 4.

“We got everyone involved, said Mustangs’ head coach Shaun Seiferling.

A big thing about the game which made Seiferling happy was every player got at least one point in the game.

Connor Hart-Livingston scored three goals and had six assists for Moose Jaw. Ryder Seiferling had three goals and two assists to help the Mustangs along.

Weyburn’s Maci Patterson had two goals and an assist in a losing effort.

Holding the game at the Red Knight Arena instead of at the lower ceiling Kinsmen Sportsplex has an effect on the dynamics of the game.

“It definitely opens it up for the longer passes especially for the goalie.

Even from our players in our own end it opens the long game up,” Seiferling said.

There were numerous long passes

lofted that would not be possible at the Kinsmen.

He said his opinion was split as to which arena he liked to play in but if pressed it fell back to the Kinsmen.

“I like the Kinsmen because since I started with lacrosse that’s sort of been our home.”

The players are prepared not to get overconfident and complacent so as not

to give up victories.

He said the team’s biggest weakness is defence and work needs to be done on it.

“We need to get a little bit better on defence. Tonight it was OK our goalie did good, but I would like our players to get more physical on defence. (We need to) get more sticks on them when they rush through our house,” Seiferling said.

The team’s strongest points is their speed and stick skills.

The team has one more regular season game and then it’s time for playoffs.

15U AAA Wrap Up a Productive Week With a Win

To sum up the past week for the Moose Jaw 15U AAA Canucks it would be ahead of the curve.

Ahead of the curve not simply because they won three out of five games over the past week but more importantly the hard work and sweat at practice is starting to pay off.

Saturday’s split of a doubleheader with the Saskatoon Astros seemed to be the opening of a door the Cubs have yet to venture thru.

Game One Canucks 8 - Astros 11 A slight dip in their play had the Canucks ending up dropping the first game in Saturday’s doubleheader.

“The boys played very well in Game one with the exception of an inning and a half. In an inning and a half we had a couple of batters we got behind on. We had four walks and then they had a couple of timely hits,” Canucks head coach Rodney Audette said.

“We were in it each inning.”

Despite the loss Audette said he felt good about how the Canucks played in the opening game.

“It felt good. It felt fine. They battled every at bat when they were in the batters box. They battled defensively and we made some good plays in the first game. I’m very happy with how they played,” he said.

looked like the Astros were on a trajectory for a doubleheader sweep, but three strong innings set the stage for a walk off victory in the 8th inning.

The Astros had a lead in the third inning, but the Canucks battled back.

The Canucks had a very strong sixth inning.

As it appeared the Canucks’ spirit was lagging and momentum was sliding away Lucas Lind punched a solo home run into right field lifting the team’s fortunes to tie the game.

in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the eighth inning as a player slid in safe at home to score the walk off victory.

Game Two saw some baseball psychology deployed.

“We were talking to the boys after the first game it doesn’t matter what the score is you have to play like you’re down one run instead of six or seven… they clawed back and kept working for each run and each base runner we had,” Audette said.

The Canucks went through two innings where they went three up and three down allowing the Astros to get ahead.

The Lind home run to tie the game was seen as “the spark that keeps them

in the game.”

“The last three innings they checked themselves. They checked their effort and attitude and it was all positive,” he said.

“I think when our boys come to play ball we can play with anybody.”

Wednesday evening’s game versus the Yorkton Cardinals was a hot affair both temperature wise and long ball wise for the Canucks.

The three game series rubber match saw the Canucks record three home runs on Yorkton’s smaller field on route to an 11 - 3 victory.

“The boys played sound defensively. And when you play sound defensively you limit bad things that can happen.”

He said he was happy with how the team has been developing.

Three generations of music: Churko family’s legacy continues from Moose Jaw to the world stage Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

On many Saturday evenings, the Churko family takes to the stage at Hopkins Dining Parlour as multiple generations of musicians continue a tradition decades in the making.

For Roman Churko, those performances continue a journey that began more than 60 years ago and has carried three generations of his family far beyond Moose Jaw. “It’s unusual that almost every member of the family is involved in music in one way or another,” he said.

The retired educator and musician traces the family’s creative legacy to his childhood near Melville, Sask., where music was a constant presence. His father served as cantor at the local church for roughly 60 years, while his mother sang in the choir.

After taking up the accordion at age 12, Churko earned a bachelor of music degree with a piano major and moved to Moose Jaw in 1970, where he worked as a music therapist before completing a bachelor of education degree and teaching music for years in local Catholic schools, including Sacred Heart and St. Michael.

Soon after arriving in Moose Jaw, Churko and his first wife, Bonnie Watson, began performing together at weddings, cabarets, and other community events. As their children became interested in music, the couple gradually brought them into the act, eventually forming the family band Churko!, which toured across Canada for nearly a decade.

“They wanted to go on the road,” Roman recalled. “Cory was 12, Kevin was 14, and Kim was 15.”

In a 2019 interview with the Moose Jaw Express, Kim Churko recalled performing alongside her brothers in the family band, while Watson remembered Cory joining his parents on stage at age seven before falling asleep behind the amplifiers while the band finished the night.

Those early years helped launch careers that would eventually carry the Churko name far beyond Saskatchewan.

later worked with Kelly Clarkson and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder, while also becoming a member of the Canadian rock band Toque.

“My dad and mom had a band, and when that band broke up, my siblings and I were all at an age where we were already playing musical instruments, and we started a family band,” he told the Moose Jaw Express in 2024. “I played my first wedding dance when I was seven.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Churko established himself as an internationally recognized producer and studio owner in Las Vegas, where he has worked with major recording artists and operates his own production studio. Roman said Kevin recently purchased a historic church on Salt Spring Island, B.C., and is converting the building into a recording studio, allowing him to divide his time between Canada and Nevada.

Youngest son Casey pursued a legal career but also earned a bachelor of music degree and remains an accomplished musician.

Kim Churko remained active in music as well, performing with her mother, Bonnie Watson, and daughter Alethia Stafford in the multi-generational group Bonnie & The Jets. Today, Hopkins Dining Parlour remains a gathering place for

that legacy.

Granddaughter Alethia (Ally) Stafford represents the third generation.

The daughter of Kim Churko and Mike Stafford, she regularly performs alongside family while also pursuing her own musical and acting projects. Beyond the family stage, she is the lead singer of the Regina-based rock band Fame Fatale, which released its first EP, Darkest Hour, in 2024.

That same multi-generational spirit was on display in January 2020 when members of the Churko family reunited at the Mae Wilson Theatre for the soldout “Cold Night for Cancer” fundraiser.

The event raised money for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation while honouring the memory of Roman’s son Kelly and featured three generations of family members performing together alongside Cory’s band Toque.

“The whole family was there,” Roman said. “For me, that was the highlight because everyone was involved.”

Today, Roman has stepped away from the stage, but the bonds forged through music continue to unite the family.

“There’s always a connection,” he said.

Family-built classic earns top honour at Peacock Show N’ Shine Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

When Tanner Kivol picked out a 1971 Chevrolet C-10 in Grade 7, he already knew it would one day become his high school autobody project.

That planning paid off on May 20 when his restored truck, Stella, captured the People’s Choice Award at Peacock’s second annual Show N’ Shine, earning praise from fellow car enthusiasts, students, alumni, and community members.

The award-winning truck represented years of planning and learning. Growing up, Kivol spent countless hours following his greatgrandfather — affectionately known as “Papa Farm” — around the family farm, watching and helping as equipment and vehicles were repaired.

According to Peacock staff, those experiences sparked a passion for classic vehicles and hands-on mechanical work that ultimately led him to restore Stella as his high school autobody project.

The restoration eventually became a four-generation project, with Kivol, his father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather working side by side to bring the half-century-old truck back to life. Over countless hours in the shop, the family tackled the complex process of dismantling and rebuilding the vehicle, transforming it from an ambitious idea into an award-winning classic while creating lasting memories for four generations of the same family.

“It’s not for the faint of heart,” the school noted. “It takes a lot of guts and determination to dismantle something as complicated as this and know you’re willing to do the hard work to put it all back together correctly.”

The restored pickup was among dozens of vehicles featured during the Show N’ Shine, which was organized to support the restoration of Peacock’s historic race car while highlighting the school’s autobody program.

For vice-principal Brad Raes, projects such as Kivol’s truck demonstrate why Peacock’s autobody program remains valuable. He said the Show N’ Shine provides students with an opportunity to showcase their work while connecting with alumni and longtime car enthusiasts who share their knowledge and experiences.

“There are several examples of student work here that show how important the program is,” Raes said

According to Raes, Peacock’s autobody program is the last remaining true high school autobody class in Saskatchewan, surviving despite rising costs that have led similar programs elsewhere in the province to disappear.

The school also boasts a rich automotive history through its student racing program, which operated for roughly two decades beginning with a 1968 Chevelle before transitioning to a Pontiac Firebird that students raced throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.

School officials said one of the evening’s most rewarding aspects was seeing experienced automotive enthusiasts share their passion with students.

“It’s a really beautiful thing to watch the older generation of car lovers share their enthusiasm and knowledge with our students,” the school said. “What a wonderful mentoring opportunity for Peacock.”

Children’s Festival returns June 13 with free family fun and growing community support Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

With just days to go before the annual Shriners Children’s Festival, organizers are encouraging families to mark June 13 on their calendars as preparations continue for what they hope will be the largest event in the festival’s history.

Hosted by the Moose Jaw Shrine Club, the free festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wakamow Valley skating oval and will feature a full day of activities aimed at children and families.

The event has become one of the Shrine Club’s signature community initiatives, combining family entertainment with the organization’s broader mission of supporting children who require specialized medical care through Shriners Hospitals.

Aaron Ruston, who has been helping co-ordinate sponsorships and community partnerships, said organizers are focused on creating a memorable day while continuing to build support from local businesses and residents.

“Our hope is to have many more children attend than ever before … it’ll be an exciting day,” Ruston said previously. “We’re having more people come on board all the time, which is a good thing. It’s going to be a lot of fun, with a lot of work leading up to it, but it’s great to have the whole team involved.”

Support has come from numerous local businesses and community members, including Moose Jaw Co-op, Tim Hortons, Western Dodge Chrysler Jeep, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Viridian Property Corporation, Titan Livestock, McCauley Agencies and several individual

supporters, including Greg Marcyniuk and Sheila Thul.

Among the latest additions announced May 27 is Morty, the Moose Jaw Warriors’ mascot, who will make an appearance at the festival.

The event’s theme this year is “Support Local and Help the Children,” reflecting the club’s effort to showcase local support while raising awareness of the Shrine organization’s charitable work.

“It’s been growing by leaps and bounds every year. The children love it. It’s all about the kids, so we can raise money to help children with afflictions and burns, and send them to hospitals to get the care they need,” Shrine Club president Chuck Cole said earlier this spring.

The Children’s Festival evolved from the former Shrine Circus, which organizers replaced with a free outdoor format to make the event more accessible to families. Over the years, the festival has become a well-attended community gathering focused on participation rather than admission fees.

Legion invites community to honour veterans during Decoration Day observance Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 59 is inviting residents to take part in this year’s Decoration Day observance, a long-standing tradition dedicated to remembering and honouring the men and women who served Canada in times of war and peace.

The annual event will take place Sunday, June 7, and will include the placement of Canadian flags on veterans’ graves at local cemeteries, followed by a memorial service at the Rosedale Cemetery Cenotaph and a community barbecue at the Legion Lounge.

Legion members are encouraging volunteers, families, community groups, cadets and other interested residents to assist with decorating veterans’ graves ahead of the annual observance.

Activities begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Sunset Cemetery on Ninth Avenue Southwest, where volunteers will

place flags on veterans’ graves. No formal service is scheduled at that location.

Members of the Army, Navy and Air

Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) will decorate veterans’ graves at Moose Jaw Cemetery on Ninth Avenue East beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday.

At the same time, volunteers will gather at Rosedale Cemetery on Caribou Street West to place flags on veterans’ graves ahead of the official Decoration Day service. The public ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Rosedale Cemetery Cenotaph.

Decoration Day has deep roots in Canadian history. The observance originated in the late 19th century as a way to commemorate veterans of the Fenian Raids and later evolved into a broader tribute to Canadians who served in the armed forces. Today, Royal Canadian Legion branches across the country continue the tradition by decorating veterans’ graves and holding ceremonies of remembrance.

Legion officials described the event as an important opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans and serving military personnel while preserving a tradition that has endured for generations.

The Legion is also seeking volunteers to assist with the lunch and welcomes donations of salads. Anyone interested in helping is asked to contact the Legion at 306-692-5453.

Following the service, the public is invited to a community barbecue at the Legion Lounge, located at 693 Fairford Street West, beginning at noon. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and salads will be available for $5, while cadets and children 12 and under eat free.

The South Hill Community Association (SHCA) is calling on residents, businesses, schools, and the broader community to help address what volunteers describe as a growing litter problem across Moose Jaw through a new citywide initiative aimed at creating longterm change.

The volunteer-led organization recently launched its “Just Can It” campaign, which seeks to encourage greater community responsibility around litter prevention while also promoting broader discussions around waste management and public space upkeep.

More than a decade of cleanup efforts carried out by SHCA volunteers throughout parks, neighbourhoods, and public spaces across the city helped lead to the initiative. According to the association, volunteers said the amount of litter they’re collecting is increasing over time.

“Instead of improving, we are seeing more and more garbage dumped and blowing through our parks, trails, neighbourhoods, and streets every year,” said Crystal Froese, chairperson of the SHCA. “Volunteers are filling bag after bag of litter. This issue is getting worse, and it’s time for our community to come together and create real change.”

The SHCA is calling for several measures as part of the initiative, including a year-round city-wide litter prevention campaign, additional garbage cans in parks and public spaces, and regular, timely emptying of waste containers. Organizers are also encouraging businesses to participate by sponsoring garbage bins and supporting positive anti-litter messaging. Fast-food and takeout businesses are being asked to help spread the campaign through printed messaging on containers and packaging.

Organizers also raised concerns surrounding landfill management and the movement of windblown waste into public spaces and surrounding areas.

The campaign follows recent volunteer cleanup efforts elsewhere in the community, including the annual spring cleanup organized by the Wakamow Valley Authority on May 24. There, residents helped collect litter throughout the

valley park system as part of ongoing efforts to maintain more than 500 acres of green space and over 20 kilometres of trails.

The association said collaboration between residents, schools, businesses, community groups, and municipal partners will be key to addressing litter concerns before they worsen further.

Through the campaign, SHCA hopes to encourage a lasting shift toward community pride and shared responsibility for public spaces across the city, with the goal of helping position Moose Jaw “among Saskatchewan’s cleanest communities.”

“This is our home,” the SHCA said in its release. “Let’s take pride in it again.”

The Platinum Martyr: Marilyn Monroe’s 100th Birthday...Hollywood’s Most Exquisite Casualty

Marilyn Monroe, whose 100th birthday fell on June 1, remains the Dream Factory’s most exquisite casualty.

Her death became a global obsession that endures today. Marilyn was a shimmering speed-freak of fame who hit the wall at 200 miles per hour because she was the only one in Hollywood who truly felt the wind.

Toasting a birthday for a woman who hasn’t drawn a breath since the Kennedy administration is a polite fiction. We aren’t celebrating a life; we’re examining a martyrdom.

Marilyn’s life was a slow-motion Technicolor execution, with the price of admission nothing less than Marilyn herself, a creature of pure surface who was swallowed whole by the very machinery that polished her.

The quintessential Hollywood tragedy didn’t arrive softly. At approximately 3:30 AM on August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe’s psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, broke her bedroom window at 12305 5th Helena Drive in the Los Angeles residential neighbourhood of Brentwood to find Marilyn lying face down on her bed, nude, covered by a sheet and clutching a telephone receiver. Her nightstand was cluttered with empty amber pill bottles, a testament to Marilyn’s prescriptionfueled survival strategy.

Fast-forward 63 years, and we still talk about “Marilyn” like she’s in the next room, or off-set, fixing her hair in her trailer. That was the thing about Marilyn, she had this way of making everyone feel like they were in on a secret with her, even though the world was really just looking at a version of her that they’d decided was theirs to keep.

Marilyn’s transformation into the ultimate sex symbol wasn’t an accident of nature; it was a calculated survival strategy. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, she began as a factory worker. She understood the grind and the power of leverage. When the camera found her, she recognized that “Norma Jeane” was a low-yield asset destined for poverty,

while “Marilyn” was blue-chip stock.

“Marilyn Monroe” didn’t just happen; Norma Jeane herself created “Marilyn Monroe.”

“She was a master of a certain kind of cinematic alchemy,” director Billy Wilder observed, witnessing her supernatural relationship with the lens.

“I have never met anyone who was as much a ‘natural’ as she was. She had no technique, but she had a kind of luminous quality that the camera loved.

You could have a room full of the most beautiful women in the world, and if Marilyn walked in, the lights would dim everywhere else. She didn’t just influence the movies; she changed the way we had to light them, shoot them, and think about them.”

Marilyn studied the masters— Dietrich, Harlow, Garbo—and reverseengineered their magnetism. The breathy voice, the calculated walk, and the platinum hair were the technical specifications of a brand designed to dominate a specific market niche.

Marilyn was very beautiful, and she had a way of looking at the camera that made you believe she was yours, which was a lie, but it was a good lie while it lasted.

Hollywood is a tough environment for beauty because its people are unkind and value only what money can buy.

It does not nurture its own talent, and Marilyn was the first to reveal the price of that. She attempted to be more than the studio expected, challenging the executives for years. However, a world based on illusion is the worst place to find authenticity. In the end, the Dream Factory broke her.

Having grown up in neglectful foster homes, Marilyn had no institutional protection. She saw that the “girl next door” was easily replaced, but a Goddess was an institution. By leaning into a hyper-sexualized image, she built a brand too big to ignore and too valuable to be discarded by studio bosses. She was a brilliant strategist trapped in a “bombshell” caricature, much of it of her own making. She

weaponized the audience’s gaze to gain leverage over front-office executives.

But there’s a brutal return on investment when you barter your psyche for your dream. The collective adoration of millions served as a toxic compensation for a childhood defined by neglect. The tragedy, of course, was that while the “Marilyn Monroe” brand was incredibly profitable, Marilyn herself was being liquidated to pay the dividends.

Long before the first social media platform existed, Marilyn mastered curated intimacy. She knew that “leaking” seemingly private, candid moments created a parasocial bond that felt more authentic to fans than a polished film role. Today’s digital creator economy mirrors this manufacturing of intimacy, balancing high-glamour aesthetics with strategic glimpses of personal struggle. Like today’s creators, Monroe suffered from image-identity dissociation. When the product becomes extremely profitable, the person inside is eclipsed, leading to burnout and radical isolation.

Marilyn wasn’t just a victim, though; she was a combatant. Her relationship with feminism, as it was in the 40s and 50s, is a study in the transition from objectification to agency. For decades, patriarchal history cast her as a casualty. Today, Marilyn Monroe is cited as an early pioneer of professional self-determination.

Marilyn challenged the studio system.

She knew she was a high-level operator trapped in a mid-level contract. By 1955, she realized 20th Century Fox was raking in millions from her image while paying her like a replaceable commodity.

In a radical act of rebellion, she walked away to form Marilyn Monroe Productions, becoming only the second woman in Hollywood history to do so after Mary Pickford. She wanted intellectual property control. She didn’t want to be a contract player; she wanted a seat at the table where she could dictate the terms of her own existence.

She wanted to be the Chairman of the Board, selecting her own scripts, directors, and cinematographers. Real power in Hollywood isn’t in front of the lens—it’s in the hands of whoever owns the negatives.

Marilyn wanted to be Truman Capote’s Holly Golightly, a role she fought for, which ultimately went to Audrey Hepburn, because it required nuance rather than just high-definition curves. Her relocation to New York City to study with the “high priest” of Method acting, Lee Strasberg, at the Actors Studio was a strategic move to shed the “dumb blonde” image and pivot to a serious actress. She wanted to negotiate her power in a world that only wanted her to be a commodity.

As her contemporary Elizabeth Taylor later reflected: “Marilyn was the first one to truly show us the cost of the ‘shimmer.’ She was a pioneer in a way people don’t like to admit—one of the first to stand up and say, ‘I am not just a piece of property.’ Every woman in this town who has ever fought for her own production company or for the right to be seen as a human being instead of a commodity owes a debt to her. At the morgue, a photographer bribed an attendant with a bottle of whiskey to snap a photo of her unembalmed, freshly autopsied body.

Even in the funeral home, she was subjected to the beauty standards of the male gaze. Mortician Allan Abbott later capitalized on her corpse in his memoir, Pardon My Hearse: A Colorful Portrait of Where the Funeral and Entertainment Industries Met in Hollywood, callously remarking that she looked like an “average, aging woman” who hadn’t shaved her legs in a week. When her body was prepared for viewing, the autopsy incisions had altered her chest. A mortuary employee stuffed her bra with cotton wool,

stepped back, and exclaimed, “Now that looks like Marilyn Monroe!”

The sexualization of her physique was deemed acceptable even as she lay in a coffin. Her faux breasts and hair, removed by the embalmer, were later auctioned to the highest bidder.

This systemic violation followed her into the earth. Richard Poncher, a man obsessed with her image, bought the crypt directly above hers and demanded to be buried face down so he could spend eternity lying on top of her. Hugh Hefner, the mogul who launched his empire by publishing nude photos of her without her consent or compensation in the 1950s, bought the plot next to hers. pink lipstick marks on the stone. It’s a grotesque irony for a woman who spent her life fighting to escape the caricature of a brainless, lipstick-wearing bombshell.

A century after her birth, Marilyn Monroe remains the ultimate blueprint for the modern celebrity. Socially, she bridged the gap between 1950s conservatism and the looming sexual revolution, redefining femininity as both a source of power and a public commodity. Yet her life stands as a stark warning about the price of chasing “the dream.”

Marilyn’s legacy isn’t a fairytale; it’s a cautionary tale about the price of chasing fame to fill an emotional void, which, in the end, becomes the

skin you find yourself in. Our ongoing fascination with Marilyn stems from how we relate to her ache of being seen yet never truly heard or known.

Old-time country concert brings community together in Mossbank fundraiser Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Residents from Mossbank and surrounding communities gathered on Main Street for live music, wagon rides, and barbecue burgers as Furrows and Faith Villa hosted an “Old Time Country Music Concert” fundraiser in partnership with the Moose Jaw-based Seniors Centre Without Walls (SCWW).

The May 23 event featured live entertainment by Chrissy’s Country Band of Moose Jaw along with performers Chris Lawrence, Al Kunschner, Sid Huntley, and Brian Lawrence. Prairie Percherons from Marquis provided wagon rides while volunteers served barbecue meals.

Manon Desruisseaux, manager of Furrows and Faith Villa, said the fundraiser exceeded expectations and highlighted the strength of support within the small-town community.

“I was hoping we would get about 50 to 60 people to come out for burgers, and we ended up selling 138,” she said. “That’s not counting the people who just dropped in to listen to the music, so it was definitely double what we expected.”

Desruisseaux said the fundraiser was organized to support operational needs at the retirement villa, including activities and entertainment.

“Of course, we’re in a small community, so we don’t have access to a lot of the things you would find in Moose

Jaw,” she explained. “A lot of the funding will probably go toward entertainment that we can bring out to Mossbank, because it always costs money to bring people in.”

According to Desruisseaux, the partnership with SCWW played a major role in making the event possible. The Moose Jaw non-profit supplied the food, entertainment, and wagon rides using remaining outreach funding intended for senior programming.

“Music costs money, the horses cost money, and we would not have been able to do it without Seniors Centre Without Walls,” she said.

Country Mall in Moose Jaw, provides outreach support and programming for seniors, particularly those at risk of isolation or losing independence.

The organization has previously warned that the loss of federal grant funding was placing pressure on some outreach and low-cost senior support services. Desruisseaux said the partnership with Furrows and Faith helped ensure some remaining funding could still support seniors through community events.

Desruisseaux said her previous work with SCWW helped establish the collaboration after she became manager of Furrows and Faith about a year ago.

“We were able to work together to make use of the remaining funding resources,” she said. “Now we can be involved in many different things with the seniors.”

One of the most memorable moments from the day came during the Percheron wagon rides, which proved especially meaningful for several older residents with farming backgrounds.

“We have a lot of farmers,” Desruisseaux said. “We have a few fellows that worked with horses their whole lives … and they just loved going on the wagon ride.

“There was one fellow that stayed on for three rides … he just loved it.”

Desruisseaux credited local volunteers, the villa board, community members, and the Village of Mossbank for helping organize the event, including temporarily closing a block of Main Street to accommodate the activities.

“Mossbank’s awesome — everyone just came together,” she said.

Following the strong turnout, organizers hope to host another event this fall after harvest season.

The older senses of harry are of an extreme violent nature, but the newer usage implies a forceful attack. Sports teams harry one another as they try to control the puck in hockey or the ball in football, basketball, or lacrosse. It is not appropriate to harry your opponent when they are attempting to hit their golf ball. Although you can harry others during a golf game by doggedly chasing them on the scoreboard or aggressively pressing during a match.

Sometimes when you desire to get people or animals moving along you harry them, attempting to force them to move by badgering them. She harried the rowdy children in the bedroom to get outside and play. When the cattle would not budge, the rancher used the dogs to harry them into the next pasture.

Synonyms of harry include harass, plague, pester, and tease.

Harass suggests resentful persecutions or burdensome demands that exhaust people. As their debt multiplied they were harassed constantly by creditors.

Plague implies a painful and persistent affliction.

She has been plagued by her addictions all her life.

Pester stressed the repetition of mean-spirited attacks. The manager of the human resources department was constantly pestered with trivial complaints.

Tease means an attempt to break down resistance and provoke a reaction. The children teased the

neighbour’s dog on every occasion.

Harry may imply heavy oppression or maltreatment. The parliamentary reporters constantly harried the minister with questions about the scandal.

Over time a more benign meaning of harry developed. Harry became more akin to worry and to annoy.

Worry means to create disorder and may drive one to desperation. The relief pitcher was worrying the batter by constantly pitching inside, after the batter was hit earlier in the game by the starting pitcher.

Annoy implies disturbing one’s composure or peace of mind by intrusion, interference, or petty attacks. “You are just doing that to annoy me,” she yelled at her sister.

Over the years we have been harried by flight delays in many airports and on various airlines. They would upset me to no end. Now we are much more accepting of postponements and view the situations as part of an adventurous trip. Makes for a much calmer and enjoyable journey.

It is with deep sadness that the family of Margaret (Peggy) Mary Forbes announce her passing on Friday, May 1st, 2026, at Pioneer Lodge in Moose Jaw, SK. Margaret was born on March 28th, 1935, in Tuxford, SK, to Mary (née: Waldenberger) and George Guillaume, a little sister for George E.

Funeral for Lynn Jerred on Friday, June 5th, at 11:00am at W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 474 Hochelaga St W., Moose Jaw.

Margaret grew up on the family farm at Marquis and attended school there. She enjoyed figure skating and played softball with the local ball team.

She married Tracy Forbes in 1953, where they farmed and ranched and raised their daughter, Karen. Margaret was very active in Community events such as the annual sports day and bonspiel. She was a member of the CWL for over 50 years. She enjoyed curling, bowling, playing cards and meeting friends for coffee and going out for lunch. Margaret loved baking and made award winning pies and cookies.

Margaret took great pride in her yard and big garden. She loved animals and always had a pet dog close by her side or on her lap. She travelled to many countries over the years, but Arizona became a favourite winter destination for over 16 years and felt like a second home.

Margaret and Tracy moved from the family farm to Moose Jaw in 2002, where Tracy passed away soon after. Margaret became accustomed to the city life and made many more good friends. Margaret’s greatest joy was her family; she enjoyed talking and seeing them on FaceTime and was always a go to person for listening and a shoulder to lean on.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sister-in-law (Margaret), nephew (Brad), niece (Rhonda), many aunts and uncles and cousins. Margaret is survived by her daughter Karen (Randy) Knutson, grandchildren Chantel Roy and Ryan Knutson; great grandchildren Brady, Lucas, Thane and Avery; her brother George and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff at both hospitals in Moose Jaw and Assiniboia as well as the kindness and compassion given to Margaret and family during her brief stay at Pioneer Lodge.

A Memorial Prayer Service with Deacon Lamont Dyck officiating will be held on Saturday, June 6th, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Moose Jaw Funeral Home, followed by a time of fellowship. A private family interment will follow. If so desired, Margaret has requested any donations be made to the St. John’s Cemetery Fund, Box 54, Marquis, SK S0H 2X0. K+S Short Line 101 To demonstrate the raw power of steam energy, the WDM showcases its fully operational K+S Potash Canada Short Line 101 steam train each summer, and guests can catch a ride on a working piece of Saskatchewan’s history. Operating since 1978, this is Saskatchewan’s only operational steam locomotive the Vulcan, with 10- to 15-minute trips around the site. Admission is $7 for individuals or $20 for families, with rides subject to weather, volunteers, and mechanical conditions.

Reminiscence Kits The museum’s Reminiscence Kits are meant to bring generations together and ignite new friendships through the sharing of memories. These kits, containing everyday artifacts from the 1950s to the 1970s, can be rented by care homes and other organizations for two weeks at a cost of $75, with an additional $25 fee for a one-week extension.

Elks seniors housing project welcomes new manager as affordable living tradition continues Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

A long-running senior housing project is entering a new chapter this spring as longtime project manager Art Watson prepares to hand over responsibilities to Carol Tremblay after decades of volunteer service.

The Saskatchewan Elks Seniors Homes development on South Hill has provided affordable independent living accommodations for older adults since opening in 1961. The 10-unit complex is located along the 100 and 200 blocks of Maple Street East, just south of Plaxton Lake.

Watson, who managed the Moose Jaw project from 1994 to 2000 and again from 2008 until this year, officially concluded his volunteer role on May 31 after nearly three decades. Tremblay has spent the past two months working alongside him as part of the transition and will assume responsibility for applications, tenant relations, and day-to-day

operations on June 1.

The one-bedroom units are approximately 550 square feet and include a kitchen, living area, bathroom, utility room, stove, refrigerator, and washing machine. Designed for accessible dayto-day living, the homes are ground-level with only a single step at the entrance.

Residents are responsible for household upkeep, lawn care, and snow removal.

“They have to be independent,” Watson said. “We don’t cut their grass, shovel their snow, or wash their windows.”

Intended for lower-income seniors who can live independently, the homes are available to applicants aged 55 and older whose total household income does not exceed $39,000 per year. Applicants must provide income verification, and Watson emphasized that acceptance is not guaranteed simply by submitting

an application.

Rent is currently $460 per month, with water included, making the units one of the more affordable independentliving housing options in the community. Residents are responsible for all other utilities. The development is also non-smoking and does not permit pets.

The project was among the earliest Saskatchewan Elks seniors housing developments, created as part of a provincewide effort to help seniors remain in their communities.

City records show planning discussions began in 1959, followed by a sod-turning ceremony in August 1960.

The first residents moved in during the spring of 1961, and the official opening was held May 27 of that year.

oped through a partnership involving the Saskatchewan Elks Association and all three levels of government. Built at a cost of roughly $160,000, the original development consisted of 10 double units, or 20 suites, and was created to provide housing for seniors who wished to remain independent and connected to the community.

The Moose Jaw homes form part of a provincewide Saskatchewan Elks housing program that has expanded to eight communities across the province.

According to the Saskatchewan Elks Association, the organization now operates 135 rental units in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Nipawin, Rosetown, Hanley, Davidson, Moosomin, and Esterhazy.

Locally, the project is overseen by Moose Jaw Lodge No. 7, which holds a significant place in the organization’s history as the seventh Elks lodge established in Canada. The lodge now meets at the Royal Canadian Legion and remains active through fundraising, charitable giving, and volunteer initiatives. According to its official website, the lodge currently has about 50 members, roughly 20 of whom are actively involved in its ongoing programs and events.

What began as a long-planned cycling trip eventually took on a much deeper purpose.

“Before it was just going to be me going for a bike ride for a couple of months, but now it’s obviously become something a bit bigger than that,” Judah said.

Now midway through the ride, the pair have already faced mountain snowstorms, prairie headwinds, and a latenight wildlife encounter in Drumheller, Alta., where they discovered an animal had torn into their tent overnight.

Andrew said the physical demands of the ride have also deepened his understanding of resilience and vulnerability.

After battling strong easterly headwinds between Caronport and Regina, the pair adjusted part of their route with the help of family members in a support vehicle.

The experience, he said, reinforced a lesson shared with him early in the journey: “The strongest trees bend with the wind.”

“Just look out for the nurses in your life and tell them resilience isn’t always about being strong, and that resilience can, at times, mean admitting the fragility of our humanity and seeking the support we need,” he said.

The campaign continues as the pair make their way east across Canada toward Newfoundland.
