Reacting to market opportunities and prices Canadian farmers increased canola acreage and reduced wheat acres when seeding this spring. Canola increased by almost two million acres to 24.4 million while wheat acres decreased to 26.3 million — a reduction of 580,000 acres. In wheat acres, durum planting fell 10 per cent to 5.8 million with spring wheat acres down 3.9 per cent to 18.01 million. Winter wheat fell 11.5 per cent to 1.4 million acres.

Barley acres increased 550,000 to 6.7 million with oats declining 460,000 acres to 2.5 million. Pulse crop acreage came down with lentils losing 625,000 acres to 3.9 million. Field peas fell 480,000 acres to just over three million. Chickpea acres fell 1.2 per cent to 533,000. Flax acres fell 4.8 per cent to 630,000. Mustard acres dropped 4.8 per cent to 378.000. Sunflower acres fell 10 per cent to 236,000. Summerfallow acres increased 10 per cent to 1.19 million, Soybean acres were up 3.1 per cent to 5.9 million. Saskatchewan grows around 67,000 acres of soybeans. Grain corn acres were up about 70,000 to 3.95 million. Saskatchewan grows about 130,000 acres of corn.
