Residents urged to support House of Commons petition to keep Snowbirds flying during transition Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Canadians now have an opportunity to formally voice their support for the Canadian Forces Snowbirds through a House of Commons petition calling on the federal government to keep the iconic aerobatic team flying through its transition to a new aircraft.

The online petition, e-7535, opened for signatures on June 26 and asks Ottawa to ensure the Snowbirds remain “visible and actively engaged in public air demonstrations” until their replacement aircraft is available and operational. The petition is sponsored by Moose Jaw— Lake Centre—Lanigan MP Fraser Tolmie and was initiated by Moose Jaw resident Jana Kitts.

As of June 28, the petition had received 114 validated signatures, including 97 from Saskatchewan. Supporters have until Oct. 24 to add their names via the House of Commons e-petitions website.

The petition argues the Snowbirds have served as ambassadors for Canada for more than five decades, inspiring national pride while supporting military recruitment and preserving specialized aviation expertise developed by generations of pilots, technicians, and support personnel.

the petition asks the federal government to maintain public demonstrations through the transition “with reasonable operational adjustments made as necessary to maintain safety.”

The campaign follows the federal government’s announcement in May that the Tutor fleet will retire after the 2026 air show season, ending 55 years of service with 431 Air Demonstration Squadron. The Royal Canadian Air Force has announced the Snowbirds will eventually transition to the new CT-157 Siskin II aircraft, but the Snowbirds are not expected to become operational on the new aircraft until the early 2030s, creating the prospect of a

multi-year pause in demonstrations.

The petition is being promoted by an independent community initiative, Petition to Keep the Snowbirds Flying, which describes itself as unaffiliated with the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, or the Snowbirds themselves.

Supporters are also encouraging Canadians to visit KeepThemFlying. ca, where they can download postcards for Members of Parliament, access email templates, and share personal memories and photographs celebrating the Snowbirds’ legacy.

While campaign organizers say safety remains paramount and support retiring the Tutor aircraft when necessary, they argue the federal government should examine every responsible transition option before the Snowbirds disappear from Canadian skies for several years. They have suggested measures such as reducedsize formations, shorter demonstration routines, and a clearly defined transition plan.

Residents interested in supporting the initiative can sign the petition through the House of Commons e-petitions website at OurCommons.ca/petitions by searching for petition e-7535. The petition will remain open until Oct. 24.

Festival of Words set to return for milestone 30th anniversary Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The Saskatchewan Festival of Words will mark its 30th anniversary July 16 to 19 with more than 50 events bringing Canadian authors, poets, musicians, and storytellers to venues throughout downtown Moose Jaw. The milestone festival comes three decades after the event was founded by the late Gary Hyland.

Sara Grimes, festival program coordinator, said organizers wanted this year’s lineup to honour the festival’s history while continuing its tradition of introducing audiences to new voices and perspectives.

“What we really wanted to do with our 30th anniversary festival is think about how far we’ve come since that very first festival, while still staying true to who we are now,” Grimes said. “We have some great names from festivals past ... but we’re also still wanting to maintain our mission of bringing in newer names and introducing people to different authors that they may not have heard of.”

Among this year’s featured guests are internationally acclaimed authors Yann Martel, best known for Life of Pi, and Michael Crummey, along with a broad roster of writers representing genres ranging from historical fiction and mystery to poetry, romance, and nonfiction.

Programming begins July 16 with a full day of workshops at the Moose Jaw Centre for Arts and Culture and Moose Jaw Public Library. Sessions include Indigenous worldbuilding with Tonia Laird, mystery writing with

Families can also attend a free outdoor Storytime for Little Ones featuring Karl Subban.

The opening day concludes with a screening of Jane Austen Wrecked My Life, followed by the popular Readception event featuring short readings from six authors.

Reading sessions take centre stage on July 17 and 18, with authors appearing in curated pairings that encourage fresh conversations and new discoveries for readers.

“We have four different reading sessions running simultaneously in the morning and afternoon, so (that’s) how

we get the wide variety,” Grimes said.

“We like to pair big names with smaller names so people get introduced to new (voices).”

Several marquee events are also planned throughout the festival. On July 17, the Future Readers Panel will explore youth literacy and how younger generations are engaging with books and storytelling, featuring Alice Kuipers, Monique Gray Smith, and Karl Subban. The evening will continue with the festival’s popular literary trivia night at Bobby’s Place, followed by a spoken word showcase featuring poets from across Canada.

On July 18, author Michael Crummey will take part in a one-hour

interview hosted by Angie Abdou at the Mae Wilson Theatre. Saturday’s programming concludes with the Saskatchewan Concert Showcase, featuring Last Birds, Teagan Littlechief, and Moose Jaw’s own Megan Nash.

Assembling the annual lineup is a lengthy process that begins months in advance.

“It’s a lot harder than you think (to organize the festival). We get around 200 pitches every year from different publishers and authors, and that starts right in September,” she said.

The festival concludes July 19 with a catered breakfast at the Temple Gardens Centre and a pair of discussion panels exploring the future and history of Canadian and Saskatchewan literature.

Grimes said the event has become an important part of Moose Jaw’s cultural identity.

“I feel like it really adds to Moose Jaw’s (sense of) optimism, and just being down for anything,” she said. “That’s what we love about our audience … people come to the festival having no idea who is coming, and so I think it really speaks to Moose Jaw’s willingness to experiment and to be surprised.”

École Palliser Heights School recognized for building culture of inclusion Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

École Palliser Heights School has been recognized as the 2026 Inclusive School of the Year, an honour that staff say reflects years of work creating a school where every student feels they belong.

The honour, presented by Inclusion Saskatchewan during a June 6 ceremony in Saskatoon, is for schools across the province that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to inclusive education.

Principal Kelly Logan said the recognition highlights the work schools do to ensure students have the resources they need to succeed alongside their peers. “(The) Inclusive School Award recognizes schools that are committed to creating environments where students feel valued, supported, and included,” she said.

Student support teacher Patrick Montague said inclusion has become part of the school’s culture rather than a standalone program. “(This recognition) means a lot to our whole school community, for sure. At Palliser, inclusion isn’t a separate program or initiative — it’s really part of how we think, plan, and make decisions every day, and that’s the true meaning of inclusion here at Palliser,” he said. “It affirmed the work our staff, students, and families do every single day. It’s special to have others recognize the inclusive culture we’re trying to build, and (to recognize) the positive impact that (this) work has on our stu-

Rather than recognizing a single initiative, Logan said the award reflects the school’s commitment to meeting the diverse learning, communication, social, and emotional needs of its approximately 610 students. Wherever possible, individualized supports and specialized programming are incorporated into regular classroom settings, allowing students to remain connected with their peers and participate fully in school life.

“The ultimate goal is for students

to remain connected to their peers and feel like full members of the school community,” Logan said. “We really try to create that culture where differences are understood, accepted, and valued.

Part of that is helping students see that everyone uses different tools and strategies to be successful, and that’s okay.”

She said staff also work to normalize multiple ways of learning and communicating. For example, while some students rely on iPads as communication devices, classmates are also given opportunities to use the technology,

helping reduce stigma while reinforcing that different tools and strategies are all valid ways for students to succeed.

Montague said inclusion is evident throughout the school each day.

“Inclusion isn’t just about being in the same space, so it’s about belonging, participating, building those relationships, and really being known as a valued member of the classroom and school community,” he said.

One of the school’s most visible examples of inclusion this year was the completion of its new inclusive playground, which officially opened June 8. The expanded play space features accessible ramps, inclusive swings, wheelchair-friendly equipment, rubber surfacing, and other accessibility features designed to ensure children of all abilities can play together.

Another initiative launched this year was an American Sign Language club, where students voluntarily learned ASL during lunch hours to better communicate with classmates.

Montague said the club’s impact quickly extended beyond the classroom.

“It started off as a lunch hour kind of thing, and you didn’t see too much signing on the playground. As the year progressed, it’s great to see kids signing all over the playground,” he said. “That really shows that (the program) is working and becoming part of the school culture — that’s really what we’re trying to do around here.”

sive and accessible community. Ramps are built, sidewalks improved, and programs are promoted that encourage people of all abilities to participate in community life. These are all commendable efforts. However, true inclusivity is tested not by our words, but by our actions.

The recent decision to prohibit enclosed mobility scooters that exceed 81 centimetres in width raises an important question: inclusive for whom?

For many individuals with mobility challenges, an enclosed scooter is not a luxury item or a recreational vehicle. It is freedom. It is independence.

It is the ability to visit friends, attend appointments, go shopping, or simply enjoy a ride through the community without having to rely on others.

More importantly, this is Saskatchewan.

We live in a province where winter can last half the year. We experience rain, snow, wind, and temperatures that can plunge well below freezing. Asking

a person with mobility issues to use an open scooter in these conditions is not realistic. An enclosed scooter provides protection from the elements and allows many individuals to remain active and engaged in their community.

If the city chooses to remove that option, then a reasonable question follows: what is the alternative?

Has accessible transportation been expanded? Is there a comparable service available on demand? Can people travel independently whenever they choose? If the answer is no, then the policy does not increase accessibility— it reduces it.

Other Canadian cities have found ways to balance safety concerns with accessibility. Rather than banning mobility devices outright because of their dimensions, they have sought solutions that allow people with disabilities to maintain their independence while addressing legitimate safety issues.

If Moose Jaw is truly committed to being an inclusive city, then it must ask itself whether this policy accomplishes that goal. Because when a regulation removes one of the few practical transportation options available to people with mobility challenges and offers no meaningful alternative, it sends an unfortunate message.

It says that our city may be inclusive for most people, but not necessarily for all people.

And a truly inclusive community should strive to leave no one behind.

A Saskatchewan author’s memoir that explores grief, mentorship, and healing may soon find a new audience through film, with Shelley Fraser in discussions to adapt her recently released book, The Morning I Walked Her Home, for the screen.

Fraser said interest in a film adaptation began shortly after readers started sharing their reactions to the memoir, which chronicles a 44-year relationship with a Catholic sister who became a mentor during her difficult childhood in northern Saskatchewan.

“I’ve had people read the story and say, ‘You’ve got to bring it to life. You’ve got to bring it to film. It’s got to become a movie,’ because they thought it was a really good story. It’s based on a true story. It’s my story. I lived it.

I experienced it,” Fraser said.

Encouraged by that feedback, Fraser began reaching out to members of Saskatchewan’s film industry to gauge interest.

“I decided to send out a couple of emails and see

if there was any interest,” she said. “The following morning, I already got a response. The fellow I spoke to in Saskatoon said, ‘You’ve got something here, and we want to see if we can bring it to life.’”

Those conversations have since evolved into ongoing discussions with Aspen Films, a Canadian production company with offices in Saskatchewan.

While no filming dates have been finalized, Fraser said the project is now moving into the funding stage, with efforts focused on securing support from provincial and film-sector funding sources.

“We’ve had discussions about it. Now we’re going to the next level,” she said.

“It would be filmed here in Saskatchewan. There’s no doubt because it’s a Saskatchewan-based story.”

If the project moves forward, Fraser expects to remain closely involved in the creative process. She said discussions have included the possibility of serving as both executive producer and screenwriter.

While timelines remain tentative, Fraser said early indications suggest funding

Fraser believes the story’s themes of mentorship, compassion, and healing are universal and could connect with an even broader audience through film.

“I came from a home that was pretty dysfunctional, but I think there are people out there who are willing to take a risk and work with young people who face challenges and bring out the best in them,” she said. “If you’re lucky enough to meet people like that who are willing to take you under their wing, I think it can make a difference in a person’s life.”

Fraser added that while a film adaptation would bring the story to a wider audience, the memoir itself remains the

most detailed version of the experience.

“There’s more detail in the book than there will be in the film,” she said. “I think if people read it before they see the film, they’ll have a better understanding.”

Fifty per cent of proceeds from sales of The Morning I Walked Her Home continue to support St. Leon’s Church at Jackfish Lake, Sask., a cause Fraser has highlighted since the book’s release.

Apples – Part I Did you know that right here on the prairies we can grow apples that are as good as those that are grown anywhere in the world? Believe it or not, but we can compare our quality of apples to those grown in the Okanagan, the Annapolis Valley and other places around the world.

In order to appreciate what it takes to grow delicious apples it is important to realize that all of the cultivars of apples that we see in the grocery store are not grown from seed but instead are propagated asexually or also commonly called produced by clones. The reason this is necessary is that in order for an apple tree to produce apples it needs to be cross-pollinated with another apple tree. What this means from a genetics perspective is that there is huge diversity contained within that apple seed and each seed will grow into something that is unique from every other seed within that apple. It may produce fruit that is

completely unique or it may not produce any fruit at all.

To grow quality apple trees on the prairies, it is required to first and foremost, choose apples that can survive our extreme winters. Cultivars that are rated to survive in zones 2 and even zone 3 are the best choices as the last thing we would wish to experience is having to plant a new tree a few years into the growth. Think about what you want to do with the apples – eat them fresh, or use them for baking. There are many types of apples and knowing what you wish to have as a product is important.

Spring is always the best time to plant. Apples should be planted in full sun and as early as possible once we get our true spring. They prefer a well-drained, loamy soil and for the best apples, they should receive water throughout the growing season. Avoid low-lying “frost pockets” to ensure your blossoms are not susceptible to a late spring frost.

Apples are grafted trees. The top part of the tree is the important part for the apply type, and the rootstock or bottom part is important for cold hardiness, so your apple tree can survive our cold winters. Identify the “graft union” which will appear as a bump at the bottom of the trunk where the apple variety is joined to the rootstock. The graft union should be planted two to four inches above the soil line. Ensure you

do not overfill the planting hole as there should be a slight depression over the root zone to help with watering.

Young trees will need significant amounts of water. Provide at least an inch of water each week, by deep-soaking the base. Cover the base of the tree in a one-meter diameter with organic mulch but ensure you do not put the mulch right up against the trunk. Pest damage or rot could become a problem if the mulch sits up against the trunk of the tree.

Apples require a different variety of apple that is blooming at the same time to get good cross-pollination. Plant two compatible varieties within fifty

feet of each other. It is also possible to buy trees that have more than one variety of apple grafted together which negates the need for other trees nearby for cross pollination as long as the blossoms are blooming at the same time.

Prairie wildlife love to munch on young apple bark. Wrapping the lower trunks with plastic tree guards or wire in late fall will help ensure your tree survives the winter in good shape. Rabbits, voles and other little critters love to gnaw on the apples in winter and if we have significant snowfall, they can reach up the trunk to areas that may not be protected by the tree guard, so keep vigilant.

Apple trees require annual pruning. The absolute best time to prune is late spring before the buds break. At this time, the tree is growing rapidly, so pruning wounds will heal quickly.

Residents rally at City Hall over proposed Valley View AI data centre Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Concerned residents gathered outside City Hall on the afternoon of June 27 to demonstrate against a proposed artificial intelligence data centre at the former Valley View Centre site, calling for greater public consultation before the project moves forward.

The demonstration was part of a broader day of protests across Saskatchewan opposing large-scale AI data centre developments.

Merna Prevost, one of the demonstration’s co-ordinators, said the gathering was intended to raise public awareness about the proposal and encourage residents to learn more.

She said organizers created the Facebook group “Say No to Moose Jaw A.I Data Centre” shortly after city council began considering amendments to the Valley View redevelopment concept plan.

“We started with seven members, and we’re 548 today,” Prevost said, adding the group plans to continue advocating against the proposal.

Prevost said organizers are concerned about the site’s proximity to Wakamow Valley, as well as the potential effects of a large data centre on nearby residents, infrastructure, and regional water resources. She said she believes the project’s water demand could place additional pressure on the water supply serving Moose Jaw. Drawing on her own experience living on South Hill, Prevost also said she remembers hearing Valley View Centre’s former lunch and shift-change sirens from her home and believes residents would likewise hear noise from a large data centre built on the site.

“I’m really concerned the noise is going to have an impact for the homeowners along the crest of South Hill.”

The demonstration also drew Moose Jaw resident Jeff Deagle, whose online Change.org petition against the proposed development has attracted thousands of signatures.

Deagle said he created the petition within minutes of learning executive committee would consider the concept plan amendment on June 9.

try and get the word out there because we didn’t hear about it until 1:30 that afternoon,” he said.

The online petition had already attracted more than 4,800 confirmed signatures as of June 27.

He said his primary concerns involve the proposed location adjacent to Wakamow Valley.

“We have problems with noise pollution and the impact that’s going to have on the surrounding wildlife, heat pollution (because) data centres put out large amounts of heat, and the damage that will cause to the immediate surrounding area,” Deagle said. He noted the valley supports hundreds of bird species each year and argued noise and heat from the proposed facility could disrupt the surrounding ecosystem.

not try and figure out the damage they cause after they’re built.”

Resident Levi Vatamaniuk said he attended the demonstration because he believes residents deserve a greater voice in decisions that could permanently affect their community.

“I think it’s important for people to be informed about what’s happening in their communities … a lot of these AI data centres are getting fast-tracked by the government … all (we’re) demanding is public consultation and public approval.”

Vatamaniuk said residents should have the opportunity to weigh the proposal’s promised economic benefits against concerns about infrastructure, electricity and water demand, noise, nearby neighbourhoods and the surrounding natural area.

“If the whole community (within earshot) is going to be exposed to noise 24/7 … the value of their homes goes down … I think people might not be re-

alizing that aspect.”

He also questioned whether employment benefits would outweigh the project’s impacts.

“Yes, there will be more jobs during construction, but afterwards, what are there going to be, 20 or 30 jobs? Does that outweigh the cons?” he said. “If the community could see the pros and cons and be able to make a decision for themselves whether it’s actually a net positive for the community in the long run, that would be best.”

The demonstration follows a proposal by Valley View developer Aztec AI Health Ltd. to amend the site’s redevelopment concept plan, replacing the residential-centred vision approved in 2023 with one focused on AI data centres, greenhouse operations, and health and wellness uses.

When the Executive Committee of Moose Jaw city council reviewed the proposal earlier this month, administration said it had not independently verified the developer’s projected economic benefits, including estimates of 800 to 1,000 jobs. The report also identified unresolved questions surrounding infrastructure, utilities and servicing, prompting executive committee to table the application pending additional information.

SaskTel 30-metre tower upgrade approved despite neighbourhood opposition Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

City council has approved a discretionary use application allowing SaskTel to replace an existing 15-metre communications tower in Elgin Park with a new 30-metre monopole, despite objections from nearby residents who argued the larger structure would negatively affect the neighbourhood.

The tower, located between Elgin Park and the Prairie South School Division office, will be replaced with a new 30-metre monopole on the existing foundation, while the site’s equipment cabinets will also be upgraded for SaskTel’s 5G network.

The proposal marked SaskTel’s second attempt to replace the tower. A previous application in 2023 sought approval for a 35-metre structure but received municipal non-concurrence after council voted to receive and file the report. City administration noted SaskTel reduced the proposed height by five metres in its resubmission in an effort to address visual concerns raised during the previous application.

Residents voice concerns Speaking on behalf of area residents, Howard Cormier told council he had gathered 55 signatures representing 44 to 46 households surrounding Elgin Park in opposition to the project.

The City of Moose Jaw announced June 26 that the speed limit has increased from 30 km/h to 50 km/h after determining the area meets the criteria for a Playground Area rather than a formal Playground Zone.

City officials said the designation recognizes the nearby green space and playground but does not require a reduced speed limit.

Drivers are still encouraged to watch for children and adjust their speed accordingly.

The 30 km/h Playground Zone on 16th Avenue Southwest, adjacent to the spray park, remains unchanged.

He argued the tower would reduce property values, dominate the surrounding neighbourhood, pose a safety risk in the event of a structural failure, and detract from Elgin Park. He also questioned Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 guidelines.

SaskTel outlines need SaskTel officials, appearing remotely, said the replacement is necessary because the existing tower cannot support Samsung equipment replacing Huawei technology, which must be removed from Canadian wireless networks by the end of 2027.

Chief Technology Officer Chad Olson said the current structure would not support the weight and loading requirements of Samsung equipment now being deployed across SaskTel’s network.

“The 14.9 metre towers will not support the new Samsung equipment based off Samsung equipment’s higher weight and loading,” Olson said.

He warned that if the replacement

tower is not approved, the existing site would have to be decommissioned by the end of 2027.

“Not only will this create a significant and immediate gap in the wireless coverage in this specific area of the city, it will also have a cascading and wide-reaching impact on the quality of the wireless service enjoyed by residents being served by the surrounding towers,” he said.

SaskTel said the existing site served 22,691 unique LTE users in August 2025, handling 68,301 Voice over LTE calls, 11 emergency 911 calls, and 4.9 terabytes of data traffic.

Coun. Chris Warren questioned whether shorter replacement towers could meet the community’s needs, but SaskTel said those options would not provide sufficient coverage or future capacity.

Council approves project Council ultimately supported the application, with Coun. Dawn Luhning moving approval.

“When cell phone service … is so important to our everyday life, I really don’t quite understand the questioning of the experts around this …,” Luhning said.

Coun. Warren said reliable telecommunications are essential infrastructure.

“I believe ... we speak to cell service as a basic human right in this day and age, because I think so much of our lives are reliant on the internet and cell coverage and data …,” Warren said.

Mayor James Murdock voted against the proposal, citing concerns about the visual impact of doubling the tower’s height in a residential neighbourhood.

“Like Councillor Warren, I worry about the aesthetics as well. I feel that that is a drastic change from 15 metres to 30, and I wonder how that could fit into the neighbourhood,” Murdock said.

Council ultimately approved the application in a 5-1 vote. Murdock cast the lone vote in opposition, while councillors Jamey Logan and Patrick Boyle were absent.

Resident Disappointed Sask Tel’s Needs Trump Neighbourhood Concerns

Neighbourhood aesthetics and safety concerns were towered over by alleged future usage and a federal mandate to replace Chinese 5G gear by the end of 2027 at Council Tuesday afternoon.

It was round two between Elgin Park neighbourhood residents and Sask Tel about replacing a 15-meter cellular tower with a 30-meter cellular tower.

But unlike the 5 - 1 victory in 2023 to stop the installation of a 35-meter tower on the site this time around a 30 meter tower was approved in a 4 - 1 vote with only Mayor James Murdock voting with the neighbourhood.

Councillors Patrick Boyle and Jamey Logan were absent.

“I’m very disappointed because some points Sask Tel made were stretching the truth and maybe misrepresenting it,” resident Howard Cormier said after the vote.

He pointed out the numbers of people said to be utilizing the existing 15-meter tower by Saskatchewan Tel as not making any sense. He quoted population statistics to back up his argument.

“Like the 22,621 users that rely on that 15-meter tower; Moose Jaw is 35,000 people and you have to figure 8,000 10,000 under age 12 so in all reality you have 25,000 users (in all of Moose Jaw),” Cormier said.

He didn’t see technology limiting the impact of the proposed tower on the neighbourhood.

“They’re damaging a neighbourhood for the rest of our lives. For the rest of Moose Jaw’s life because once they put that tower there it’s never going to get smaller it’s just going to get bigger,” he

said.

“When 6G and 7G comes in that tower is going to get bigger so they can have everybody watch videos on their phones. It’s not a good enough reason.”

Aesthetically he said the new 30-meter tower is going to ruin the neighbourhood that backs onto Elgin Park.

“It’s going to tower over the homes.

It is going to tower over the park. There are lots of kids who play in that park. I just hope that tower never fails,” he said, adding “if it does, I’ll be the first to sue whether it be Sask Tel or the City.”

He still insisted Sask Tel could have put a new 30-meter tower north of the cricket pitch and Kinsmen Sportsplex and then use the 1 - 3-mile radius they cover to team it together with the tower on South

Hill instead of in Elgin Park.

“I’m sure they could have made it work but it all comes down to the cost of removing that tower and putting it somewhere else would be about $400,000. So it is what it is and I’m very disappointed.”

He said that it might be seven years until the tower’s radio frequencies are monitored, he would personally be monitoring them and having others in the industry do the same to see if it conforms to health and safety regulations.

Cormier said it wasn’t hard to get area residents to sign a petition against the proposed tower.

He managed to get 55 signatures from 44 homes from neighbours living directly around the location. His signature gathering was restricted due to severe back problems.

“Everyone I spoke to was against

it…I don’t know if they’re angry but they’re very upset that it was denied in 2023 and they thought they could live the rest of their retirement ages and their kids playing without a worry,” he said.

“Like I said it’s very disappointing but I’m happy that the Mayor disagrees with Sask Tel but it takes more than one to win. Councillor Eby voted against the tower three years ago, so did (Councillor) Jamey Logan and I’m not sure where he was tonight.”

“I’m not so disappointed in Council as I’m disappointed in Sask Tel. The Moose Jaw & District Soap Box Racing Club has cancelled this year’s Moose Jaw Soapbox Derby.

In a social media announcement, the club said the decision was made because of a limited number of local racers, a lack of volunteers willing to help organize the event, and organizer Heather Carle preparing to undergo a second spinal surgery within three months.

The club said the next Moose Jaw Soapbox Derby is planned for Aug. 21 and 22, 2027.

Education students from the University of Saskatchewan have begun interning at schools in Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, thanks to a new partnership between the two institutions.

About a dozen students from the U of S’s Faculty of Education spent three weeks in May on a pre-internship at Our Lady of Hope (OLOH) Elementary School. This was the first group to intern in the division under the new agreement.

Dave DePape, superintendent of human resources, said during the June board meeting that “historically, there has been an invisible border” that separates Saskatchewan, with the U of S covering the northern half and the University of Regina covering the southern half.

“With a lot of work, we’ve been able to erase that invisible border. Really, it’s important for us for recruitment and retention,” he said. “We need access to all of the soon-to-be-teachers throughout the province, not just the U of R.”

Continuing, DePape said Holy Trinity has previously had “a smattering” of U of S interns, but the school division has worked primarily with the U of R for its teacher supply. While the two organizations have had a good relationship, the school division needed an additional source, given the teacher shortage.

So, Holy Trinity struck a formal relationship with the U of S and received a dozen pre-interns, “which was wonderful,” said DePape.

Something the U of S does is it allows pre-intern students to return to the same classroom for their actual internship if that classroom teacher requests them, he continued. This is great because those university interns are familiar with the students and staff and can “hit the ground running.”

The U of S will soon inform Holy Trinity which schools will receive interns next fall, although seven youths may go to OLOH based on that school’s request,

the HR superintendent remarked.

“We’re pretty excited that we’re going to get more than our usual amount of interns, (who) then hopefully soon become our employees after that … ,” DePape added.

Ward Strueby, director of education, said the school division could offer incentives to encourage interns to consider working for Holy Trinity after graduation. He noted that it’s becoming more difficult to find teachers, so this partnership with Saskatoon “is a great trial run.”

DePape agreed, saying Holy Trinity must find quality teachers, considering every Saskatchewan school division is hiring university interns during their internships. He added that next fall, Holy Trinity will have about five U of R students interning and roughly 10 from the U of S. Strueby highlighted a letter that Jan Pogorzelec, an education faculty facili-

tator at the U of S, wrote to the dozen pre-interns at OLOH. She said it was “an absolute pleasure” to meet them, visit their classrooms and provide feedback. She noted that the pre-interns had “a wonderful placement” due to the school’s knowledgeable and supportive teachers.

“The support that Our Lady of Hope staff have provided is first-rate (and) top-notch,” Pogorzelec added. “The practicum (students) truly won the lottery when they were (placed) in the caring and compassionate classrooms of the collaborating teachers.”

Extra education DePape said four to eight teachers usually receive their master’s degrees annually, which is “wonderful” since most are experienced teachers. This year, though, only two teachers — Shannon Osask and Jessica Leibel — have received those degrees, while four to six educators are working toward that goal.

Holy Trinity Catholic School Division is moving ahead with the sale of two schools that closed last year, although the buildings may sell quickly based on current interest.

During its June meeting, the board of education voted unanimously to dispose of Sacred Heart School and St. Mary School. Trustees also authorized the division’s chief financial officer to handle the sales of the properties.

A recent appraisal pegged the value of Sacred Heart at $590,000 and St. Mary at $453,000.

The completion of the $68.2-million, 1,100-student joint-use school on South Hill last year prompted the closure of four elementary schools.

Students and staff from Sacred Heart and St. Mary began attending Our Lady of Hope Elementary School in September, while students and staff from Westmount and Empire public schools are attending the adjacent Coteau Hills Elementary School.

Curt Van Parys, Holy Trinity’s CFO, said he has been working with the Min-

istry of Education to dispose of the two schools. However, the ministry wants the board to approve a formal motion to sell the buildings to ensure the process is official.

Continuing, Van Parys said the division office has received four inquiries from real estate organizations expressing interest in the sites.

“That is definitely positive,” he remarked.

Ward Strueby, director of education, said he’s been receiving text messages while board chairwoman Joann Blazieko has been receiving phone calls.

However, they have pushed those inquiries to the CFO, since he is the primary contact.

“So, people know those buildings sit there, so they’re saying, ‘Let’s get rolling,’” the education director added.

Blazieko said if Holy Trinity receives sales proposals in July or August, she could call a special board meeting to discuss the pitches.

Van Parys said he told the four real estate organizations that once the min-

istry approves the board’s formal motion and the division begins advertising the properties, he would keep them informed. This would allow the land agents to submit tenders on the properties.

The CFO noted that he would send the formal paperwork and board motion to the ministry after the meeting. However, he was unsure how long it would take the province to provide formal approval — especially with summer approaching.

Holy Trinity has asked the ministry if it can keep all the money from the property sales given the school division’s poor financial reserve position and the recent depletion of its preventative maintenance and renewal (PMR) account, due to funding challenges with the École St. Margaret School upgrade project, said Van Parys.

If the ministry approves, Holy Trinity will use the funds to support school infrastructure, address accessibility issues and renew the bus fleet.

“Hopefully the requests for propos-

als we get exceed (the appraisals),” the CFO added. “You just hope it comes in above.”

The school division will not require a real estate agent to sell the former Sacred Heart and St. Mary properties since the division office is handling the sales, said Van Parys. Also, he will work with legal counsel and, based on that advice, will bring sales proposals to the board for approval.

A trustee asked how much money Holy Trinity could save after selling the buildings and how much it is costing to maintain them.

Blazieko said the division would save “quite a bit” of money after the sales, especially since it wouldn’t have to address continued vandalism.

Van Parys said Holy Trinity is continuing to pay utility costs, although those expenses are 40-per-cent lower than normal. Also, the division is still insuring the buildings, but at a “nominal value.”

Trustees with Holy Trinity Catholic School Division have approved the organization’s 2026-27 budget, which includes an overall operating increase of 1.1 per cent and no money for major capital projects.

A report presented during the June board meeting shows total operating revenues and expenses are both expected to be $32,966,242, which — besides being a balanced budget — represents a year-over-year increase of $348,037 or 1.1 per cent.

Furthermore, the division has no major capital projects scheduled, compared to this year, when it spent $5,470,545 on Our Lady of Hope Elementary School, École St. Margaret School, a relocatable classroom and bus fleet upgrades.

Budget changes Curt Van Parys, the division’s chief financial officer, said administration adjusted the budget since presenting the first draft in May, with those changes totalling $33,500.

Catholic school trustees pass balanced budget for 2026-27 year Jason G. Antonio - For the Moose Jaw Express

to instruction because the board will have one fewer trustee next year following the recent resignation of long-time member Derek Hassen, Van Parys said.

That money will offset technology leasing costs within the instruction budget.

Also, the Ministry of Education recently provided $18,760 for a teacher project called “Bridging the Gap: Structured Literacy for the Middle Years” under the Teacher’s Innovation and Support Fund, he continued. The division has included that money in the operating grant and instruction lines.

Budget highlights Holy Trinity expects to receive $27,014,985 in provincial revenue grants next year, an increase of $657,148 or 2.5 per cent, the report said. This is based on projected enrolment by Sept.

30 of 2,473 students — seven more than in 2025.

However, the report noted that the ministry is providing $619,000 in preventative maintenance and renewal (PMR) funding — used for school upgrades — for 2026-27, which is $84,000

less than this year. This reduction, administration noted, is because the province provides less funding over three years after divisions open new schools; the South Hill venue opened in September 2025.

While the total instruction expense line — which funds all staff salaries and benefits — is increasing by $45,251 or 0.2 per cent to $23,991,548, support staff salaries are increasing by $228,946 to $4,169,700, a jump of 5.8 per cent, the report continued.

Holy Trinity has seen “significant growth” in the number of support staff hired over the past few years, which is why that line item has increased so much, said Van Parys.

However, that increase has been offset by “significant attrition” among classroom educators, with a 15-per-cent decline in full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching positions due to resignations, he continued. About 80 per cent of new teachers have started at the bottom of the pay grid, which has been financially

beneficial for the budget.

Meanwhile, the division expects to spend $1.19 million next year on student transportation, an increase of $128,680 or 12.1 per cent, Van Parys said. This is because Holy Trinity underestimated this year’s costs to pay Prairie South to transport students to the new joint-use school.

“We’re still (also) facing a bit of a challenge with … our (vehicle) repair and maintenance costs,” he added.

Another noteworthy expense category is complementary services, which is increasing next year by $179,315 or 22.5 per cent to $797,027, the report said. This is because there are more staff supporting early years’ education programs.

Technology costs have also risen by 25 per cent since last year due to global demand for artificial intelligence (AI), Van Parys added. That is why one instruction expense line has jumped by $126,753 to $434,555.

Crime trends continue downward through May, police board hears Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Overall crime and calls for service continued to trend downward in Moose Jaw through the first five months of 2026, according to statistics presented to the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners during its June 17 meeting.

The board received the Moose Jaw Police Service’s (MJPS) monthly statistical extract for May, which showed year-to-date declines across several major crime categories compared with the same period in 2025.

Violent crime also declined. Crimes against the person fell 19.7 per cent, dropping from 239 incidents through May 2025 to 192 incidents through May 2026. Assaults decreased from 146 incidents to 106, while sexual assaults declined from 24 to seven. Common assaults also fell from 98 incidents to 72.

Property crime also decreased, with total crimes against property falling 8.5 per cent year-over-year. Police recorded 497 property-related offences through the end of May, compared with 543 during the same period in 2025.

Several categories continued to show improvement. Thefts under $5,000 declined from 222 incidents to 215, motor vehicle thefts fell from 19 to 17, and mischief causing less than $5,000 in

property damage dropped from 110 incidents to 84.

Some offence categories increased.

Assaults involving a weapon or causing bodily harm climbed from 17 incidents to 25, while impaired driving offences increased from 24 to 35. Drug-related offences also climbed, with total drug offences increasing from five incidents to 11.

Police responded to 7,653 calls for service through the first five months of the year, down 9.8 per cent from 8,488 during the same period in 2025. In May alone, officers responded to 1,754 calls.

Downtown crime In addition to the citywide statistics, commissioners received a report examining calls for service in Moose Jaw’s downtown area. The update was originally presented to the board in May but was tabled until the June meeting. Commissioned at the board’s request, the report provided a closer look at policing demands and service trends within the downtown core. Further details from the downtown analysis will be reported in a separate article.

In one letter, a Crown prosecutor described the work of Const. Payton Denet and Const. Kiana Perron as “textbook” following a successful impaireddriving prosecution.

Street Weapons Act Commissioners received an update on the implementation of Saskatchewan’s Safe Community Spaces (Street Weapons) Act. Officers completed training on the legislation during spring block training sessions in May, and several have already used the Act to seize street weapons and lay charges.

ViPER patrol The board also received an update on the MJPS’s new Visible Proactive Engagement Response (ViPER) Safety Patrol program. Four local recruits — Wayne Bauluck, Kayden Lang, Aiden MacDonald, and Haily Molde — began training on June 11.

According to the report, the recruits are receiving instruction in areas including ethics, privacy legislation, situational awareness, de-escalation, report writing, bicycle patrol techniques, ambassador training, and parking enforcement. The public was expected to get its first look at the new team during the Hometown Fair Parade.

The Moose Jaw Police Service’s (MJPS) newest community safety initiative was formally launched June 24 as four recruits completed nearly two weeks of training and were introduced as members of the new Visible Proactive Engagement Response (ViPER) Safety Patrol during a media event at police headquarters.

The four-member team — Wayne Bauluck, Kayden Lang, Aiden MacDonald, and Haily Molde — began training June 11 and will spend the summer patrolling key public spaces on foot and by bicycle.

Police Chief Robert Davis said the program is intended to increase visibility in downtown Moose Jaw, support crime prevention efforts, and provide practical experience for students interested in careers in public safety.

“They’ll be patrolling in teams of two, (working) eight-hour shifts, days and afternoons,” Davis said. “The afternoons (will conclude) at 10 o’clock at night.”

ed to stand out in public spaces. “(It’s) crime deterrence through visibility. We chose that colour by design so that it pops out in a crowd, and there’s a lot of research to show just that visibility piece will be a crime deterrent and help people feel safe,” he said.

Among their responsibilities, ViPER members will assist with Safe Walk requests, act as ambassadors for the downtown core, support bicycle safety initiatives, and provide additional “eyes and ears” for police. The team may also assist with parking education and enforcement later in the summer.

Crescent Park will be a particular focus for the patrol.

“We are committed to making that park feel safe,” he said. “It’s a beautiful asset here in the city that we can’t just walk away from as a city, and so they’re

going to be a big part of that.”

Davis said the program was driven by concerns about public safety perceptions, police recruitment challenges, and a desire to create local pathways into public safety careers.

“It breaks my heart when I hear a young family talk about, ‘I spent my whole summer at the splash pad,’ and the question would be, ‘Well, do your kids go there?’ ‘Oh no, I don’t feel safe there,’” Davis said. “That’s disheartening. I made a commitment to the police commission when I was hired … it starts right here.”

The program is intended to help residents feel comfortable using these community spaces again.

“That’s what really motivated me — when you hear … (that) we’re depriving

a generation of a fun childhood because they don’t feel safe,” Davis said.

“Similarly with seniors. They built the city, and then they don’t feel safe to walk to the library — that’s not acceptable,” he continued. “This group’s going to be part of changing that perception, and it is part of a long-term plan where there’ll be some natural progression as well.”

Davis said community organizations, downtown businesses, and tourism stakeholders have responded positively to the initiative since the MJPS announced the program on May 6.

The recruits said the program offers valuable hands-on experience while allowing them to serve their community and pursue careers in law enforcement.

“I’ve done two years of criminal justice, and I thought this would be a great opportunity,” Bauluck said. “I think it’s a great stepping stone to get into policing.”

Lang said he applied to gain firsthand law-enforcement experience while completing his studies.

“It was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door, make some connections, and hopefully lead me to a successful career,” he said.

The ViPER Safety Patrol is expected to remain active throughout the summer, with members regularly patrolling the downtown core, Crescent Park, the public library area, and other high-traffic community spaces.

City dog parks closed until further notice Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The City of Moose Jaw has temporarily closed the dog parks on the 1500 block of High Street West while officials investigate an undisclosed issue.

In a public notice issued June 26, the city advised residents who have recently used the dog parks to watch for signs of illness in their pets and seek veterinary attention if any such symptoms are observed.

The city has not released further details about the situation but said additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The Moose Jaw Express sought information from additional sources but was unable to confirm any further details before publication.

36th Annual Riverhurst Walleye Classic a Father’s Day Success Team Stockdale wins the day Submitted

The team of Winston and Will Stockdale captured the top prize of $6,000 enroute to winning the 36th Riverhurst Walleye Classic tournament on June 20 and 21, 2026. Team Stockdale recorded a total catch of 43.625 pounds during the twoday event.

Lake Diefenbaker and its propensity for wind and rain can prove a challenge for the competitors and Sunday was a difficult fishing day due to the inclement weather. A total of 852 walleye weighing 2,626 pounds were caught and live-released back into the lake during

the tournament. Only four fish were declared dead on the weigh scale.

Dr. Chris Somers and his team from the University of Regina were at the weigh scales examining and tagging fish as part of their ongoing Lake Diefenbaker research.

Rounding out the top three tournament placements in second place were Daryl Dean and Kevin Matiachuk with a total catch of 43.305 pounds followed by Dee Ballard and Randy Junop in third place with a total catch of 43.005 pounds. Second place received

The tournament’s largest walleye, weighing 11.485 pounds was caught on Saturday by Carson and John Bell.

The competition was fierce with just .62 pounds separating first place and fourth place. Landing that big one that got away could have propelled many of the top 10 teams into the money.

all received a cash prize. Non top-20 finishers were eligible for merchandise prizes.

The Riverhurst Walleye Classic is the largest fundraiser for the Riverhurst Recreation Board. Proceeds from the tournament have been directed at projects such as new lighting, ceiling tiles and hot water heater at the Riverhurst Community Hall.

Former city manager’s $440,978 remuneration tops 2025 public accounts Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Former Moose Jaw city manager Maryse Carmichael received the highest reported remuneration of any City of Moose Jaw employee in 2025, according to the municipality’s newly released public accounts.

The 2025 public accounts, presented to city council on June 23, report Carmichael’s remuneration at $440,977.56, more than double the $208,722.51 reported in the 2024 public accounts.

She was previously listed with $128,740.35 in remuneration in 2023 after joining the City midway through that year.

Carmichael was hired by city council in May 2023 and became Moose Jaw’s first female city manager. Council terminated her employment without cause effective Dec. 2, 2025, appointing chief of staff Rhonda Smysniuk as interim city manager. At the time, Mayor James Murdock said council wanted to “go in a different direction,” but declined to elaborate further, saying the reasons would remain

among council.

While the public accounts disclose the amount paid to Carmichael during 2025, they do not provide a breakdown of the reported remuneration. The report notes that remuneration may include regular salary as well as other payments such as retiring allowances, service pay, sick pay allowances, taxable health benefits, hiring incentives, car allowances and honorariums, but does not identify which components apply to individual employees.

The public accounts also list former director of planning and development Michelle Sanson with $50,000 in remuneration during 2025. Sanson left the City in September 2024 following an organizational restructuring after approximately 19 years with the municipality. In the 2024 public accounts, she received $225,330.19 in regular remuneration and $4,786 in other remuneration.

The City of Moose Jaw’s 2025 public accounts show the municipality paid more than $54.2 million in contractual expenditures during the year, with major payments ranging from water treatment and road paving to utilities, insurance, and public services.

Presented to city council on June 23, the 2025 public accounts provide an annual snapshot of municipal spending, including employee remuneration, council expenses, contractual expenditures and grants for the year ended Dec. 31, 2025. The report is required under The Cities Act. The largest contractual expenditure was $6.18 million paid to PME Inc. Other major payments included $4.51 million to the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant Corporation, $3.52 million to SaskPower, and $3.39 million to Cypress Paving (1976) Ltd. Significant expenditures also included $1.68 million for insurance through Marsh Canada Limited, $1.31 million to the

Palliser Regional Library, $1.06 million to Can-Traffic Services Ltd., and nearly $972,000 to C & E Mechanical Inc. Beyond the largest contracts, the public accounts show hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on engineering and consulting services, road and utility infrastructure, waste collection, fleet vehicles and equipment, software and public safety technology, insurance, legal and auditing services, recreation facilities, community organizations and provincial agencies.

The report notes that contractual expenditures include both operating and capital expenditures but exclude investment contracts, debt payments, tax and water refunds, employee payroll deductions, and land refunds. Some prepaid expenses, inventory purchases and equipment costs remain included because they were not adjusted out of the annual totals.

The public accounts also detail council remuneration and expenses. Mayor James Murdock received $115,249.50 in remuneration during 2025, while councillors each received approximately $36,600. Council members claimed a combined $4,697.70 in expenses, with Councillor Chris Delaurier reporting the highest amount at $2,356.63, followed by Mayor Murdock at $2,230.83.

The report also identifies

$115,917.60 in grants during 2025, including $59,302.14 to the Cosmo Senior Citizens’ Centre Incorporated and $56,615.46 to the Moose Jaw & District Senior Association.

In addition to contractual expenditures and grants, the public accounts list remuneration for employees earning more than $50,000 during the year. The report notes remuneration may include regular salary as well as other payments, including retiring allowances, service pay, sick pay allowances, taxable health benefits, hiring incentives and car allowances, where applicable. Separate sections also include financial information for the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners and Temple Gardens Centre, both of which form part of the City’s reporting entity under The Cities Act. core is moving in the opposite direction.

17 meeting examining calls for service within the downtown area, comparing monthly totals from December 2024 through May 2026.

The analysis, prepared at the board’s request, found calls for service increased in every month examined compared with the same period the previous year.

According to the data presented, downtown calls rose from 23 to 51 between December 2024 and December 2025, a 121.7 per cent increase. Monthly totals continued to climb throughout the first five months of 2026, with January increasing from 29 to 76 calls (162.1 per cent), February from 32 to 82 (156.3 per cent), March from 28 to 82 (192.9 per cent), April from 35 to 93 (165.7 per cent), and May from 33 to 97 (193.9 per cent).

Police Chief Robert Davis told commissioners the report was intended to provide a factual overview of policing demand

within the downtown core.

In written responses provided following the meeting, the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) said the increase should be viewed alongside the broader citywide trend.

“The biggest takeaway is that while downtown calls for service have risen, overall calls across Moose Jaw have actually declined year-over-year,” the MJPS said.

Police said one of the most significant trends behind the increase has been a rise in calls involving mental health and addictions.

“One particular area that has seen a noticeable increase downtown is calls relating to mental health and addictions,” the service said. “This data reinforces the importance of (MJPS’s) Police and Crisis Team (PACT), which ensures that MJPS is equipped to engage individuals experiencing crisis, particularly in relation to mental health and addictions.”

Interactive digital “heat” maps presented to commissioners highlighted areas where police receive higher concentrations of calls for service. The maps allow users to visualize where calls for service are concentrated, helping identify locations that generate the highest demand for police response.

According to the maps, some of the busiest locations include the Moose Jaw Public Library, Moose Jaw Co-op, and the intersection of Main Street North and Hochelaga Street West.

“Hotspots generally reflect areas where vulnerable individuals live, access services, or gather, which naturally increases calls for assistance,” the service said.

Police said the information will continue to influence how officers are deployed downtown.

“In the short term, this information will continue to guide patrol patterns and direct police attention where it’s most needed,” the MJPS said. “Over the longer term, the data will help MJPS identify where to expand and focus new resources.”

The service added that initiatives such as the new Visible Proactive Engagement Response (ViPER) Safety Patrol, officially launched June 24, are intended to strengthen a visible police presence in the downtown core through what it described as “an innovative, community focused approach.”

According to the board report, commissioners requested the downtown analysis to better understand policing demands within the city’s core business district. Police indicated the data will continue to be monitored as longer-term trends emerge.

Moose Jaw ICE Unit investigation results in child exploitation charge Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Moose Jaw resident Bradley Joseph Cournoyer, 53, has been charged following an investigation by the Moose Jaw Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit.

According to police, members of the Moose Jaw ICE Unit, working in partnership with the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit, executed a search warrant at a Moose Jaw

residence on June 24.

Police said investigators examined and seized electronic devices at the scene and located printed images containing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

As a result of the investigation, Cournoyer was arrested on June 24 and charged with one count of possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Police said additional charges may be laid pending analysis of the seized electronic devices.

Cournoyer appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on June 25 and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.

Rain slowed crop development Ron Walter - For Moose Jaw Express

Late spring heavier than usual rainfall is impacting crops in two ways.

Low soil moisture levels have been rebuilt with the best amount of soil moisture in years but the rains have left three per cent of crops unseeded Five per cent of hay land and pasture will not yield well due to high moisture levels.

Coming into spring only four per cent of crop land was in surplus soil moisture As of June 22, 20 per cent of crop land was in a surplus moisture position, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture weekly crop report.

In the southwest only eight per cent of crop land is in surplus moisture.

Provincially, 15 per cent of hay land was in surplus, compared with one per cent in April.

Southwest region hay land has four per cent in surplus moisture.

Pastures in the province show 12 per cent surplus moisture compared with no surplus in April Six per cent of southwest pastures have surplus moisture levels.

The rains and late seeding have slowed crop development.

Only one per cent of cereals, oilseeds, and pulses are ahead of normal development.

Oilseeds have the highest rate of below normal development at 45 per cent with 34 per cent of pulses below normal, 14 per cent of fall cereals and 34 per cent of ,spring cereals in that state.

Sunny weather is needed to improve crop development.

The forecast to the end of June

is for more rain.

Most of the Moose Jaw region had between 30 and 40 millimetres of rain in with the rest getting between 20 and 30 millimetres for the week ended June 22 The Old Wives area, southwest of Moose Jaw, had 77 mm with 41 mm at Craik.

July 1 celebration less important than July 2, 1968 Fifty-eight years ago I did not celebrate Dominion Day with flag waving or cheering at fireworks displays.

In that year I was too busy getting over the fact I no longer had to report to school when the summer ended. I rejoiced in not being tied to chemistry classes and remembering all the details about triangles as that chapter in my life came to an end.

By July 1 of that year I was already living in my apartment on the second floor of a private home whose owners promised my parents they would watch out for this youngster living on her own in the big city. They looked after me and I knew if I needed advice or a kind word, they were there, just a knock away around the corner in the back yard.

The night of July 1 I recall laying out my clothes for the next day — my best yellow and white striped dress, a new package of panty hose, clean underwear and polished high heeled shoes. I had a second pair of hose in my purse with extra Kleenex tissues, pen and a notepad. My wallet contained all my money, except for a few folding bills I stashed in the freezer of the refrigerator.

On the next morning, July 2, 1968, I dressed with

care, nerves in my stomach encouraging me to eat something before I ventured out on a six block walk to 44 Fairford St. W. where I was to report at 8 a.m. It was a beautiful, bright summer day and I knew I was ready to dazzle my employer with my journalistic talents.

I introduced myself to the receptionist and she looked at me oddly. I later figured out she thought I looked like the proverbial country bumpkin come to the city.

A gentleman came to meet me, letting me know that the editor was on holiday and had failed to pass along the details of my employment. However, he invited me into the newsroom, pointed out an empty desk with a manual typewriter waiting just for me. Then he introduced me to the staff, all of whom had been staring and waiting to learn about this new person in their midst.

I met Eli Karmin, Mike Grieve, Susan Parr, Gillian Lien, Jonas Weinrauch, Marian Johnson, Gene Thibault, Regis Yaworski and oh yes, Ron Walter. There were others but I was in shock trying to remember their names, and learning the editor had not prepared them for this, the first day of my newspaper career.

Imagine, months later when I was finally informed that the reporters on staff had originally verbally protested the fact the editor had hired “a girl.” He stood firm, noting I was persistent until he agreed to take me

on for the summer. At the end of the summer he told me to stick around and even authorized a bit of a raise.

That summer of 1968 will always hold a special place in my memory bank. Indeed, those were the days of learning how to write obituaries, the Remember When column that seasoned reporters hated being assigned. I learned about heifers and Herefords at the cattle show at the fair (wearing a dress and those blasted high heeled shoes that sank into mud and other stuff I didn’t want to identify.) I met grandstand entertainers but wasn’t allowed to interview a fortune teller because one of the other reporters had dibs on that assignment.

The taxi drivers took me under their wings and stuck around until I turned on the light in my apartment and signalled that I was OK. I proved I could cook by inviting the newsroom staff to a fried chicken dinner. My budget was shot that week but I proved a point.

The mayor was a delightful rotund man who never met a reporter he didn’t like and we enjoyed milkshakes together at the Kresge lunch counter.

Hazel, Rita and Chloe at the Uptown Cafe made sure I ate properly and in that cafe I went on my first coffee date with Ron Walter, under guise of him giving me tips on being a better reporter. I’m not sure what his intentions were at the darkened movie theatre but I took a taxi home after the show and he wandered off to his own apartment.

My women’s lib attitude won a battle that summer: I could wear trousers to work despite what the gate keeper in the front office decreed. It was wonderful to tell her: “I don’t work for you” as I showed up for work in dress pants, blazer and flats and headed out with the photographer to do interviews at the new Hutterite colony in the nearby rural area.

My future Housemate was annoyed because he wanted to do that story. My revenge in losing the fortune teller story.

And so, here we are, 58 years later, thinking about that July 2 and all the years that have come and gone.

Housemate still talks about the hiring of “a girl” and I remind him of his sexist comments that would definitely get him in trouble in today’s work place.

We both still have newspaper ink in our veins and a bit of that old competitive spirit. I might even pay for our next coffee date.

Hamburger meat always a stand-by ingredient Hamburger meat is a versatile addition to the picnic or barbecue menu.

Use it to make meat patties with favourite ingredients and sauces or try something new using a variety of vegetables.

This week’s column offers two recipes with hamburger as the stalwart ingredient.

••• VEGETABLE-STUFFED HAMBURGER 1 lb. ground beef 1 egg 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce salt and pepper, to taste 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green pepper 1/2 cup chopped celery First method: Combine ground beef, egg and Worcestershire sauce in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Stir in chopped onion, pepper

and celery. Mix thoroughly. Place mixture in a large stove-top pan and cook over high heat for 10-15 minutes, then reduce heat and cook until vegetables are tender. Serve like a thick stew on a bed of rice.

Second method: Combine ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper. Form into eight thin patties. Arrange chopped vegetables between two patties and press edges to seal in vegetables. In a large frying pan covered with non-stick spray, sear patties on high heat for 10 minutes, then reduce heat and contiue cooking fo 15-20 minutes or until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are soft.

Serve patties in a prepared hamburger bun or as is with steamed rice.

••• STUFFED ROLLS 3 tbsps. cooking oil 1 large onion, finely chopped or minced 3 lbs. lean ground beef

1-10 oz. can chicken gumbo soup 1/2 cup ketchup or chilli sauce 2 tsps. prepared mustard, any flavour salt and pepper to taste 24 retangular salad rolls Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a skillet, heat oil and fry onions until soft but not burned. Stir frequently. Add ground beef and continue cooking until meat is no longer pink.

Add all other ingredients and simmer over low heat for one hour or until most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove from heat and let stand to cool.

Slice rolls in half lengthwise and spoon a small amount of beef mixture into each roll and then wrap in foil. Warm stuffed rolls for 10-15 minutes in a low oven before serving. Serve with a pasta or potato salad.

Rollerblader to pass through Moose Jaw during 700-km Saskatchewan fundraiser Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Residents travelling the Trans-Canada Highway later this month may spot an unusual sight passing through southern Saskatchewan: a rollerblader attempting to cross the entire province in support of a small-town arena.

Dion Campbell, a teacher and volunteer with the Rocanville Rink Fundraising Committee, is preparing to rollerblade approximately 700 kilometres from the AlbertaSaskatchewan border near Walsh to the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border as part of an ambitious fundraising effort aimed at preserving an important community gathering place.

The challenge, known as Blade Across the Prairies,was expected to begin June 27 and would take take roughly six days to complete, depending on weather and road conditions. Following the Trans-Canada Highway corridort, Campbell will pass through communities across southern

Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, as he skates from border to border.

While funds raised will support repairs and upgrades to the aging arena in Rocanville, Sask., organizers say the initiative is also intended to draw attention to the importance of community rinks throughout Saskatchewan.

In many Saskatchewan communities, especially smaller towns and villages, the local rink serves as

more than just a recreational facility.

It’s where kids learn to skate, families spend winter evenings together, volunteers pitch in, and residents gather for everything from hockey games and public skating to fundraisers and community celebrations.

Organizers described the Rocanville arena as a core part of community life and said preserving the facility is about more than maintaining a building.

“This arena is the heart and home to so many generations of families and holds many memories for them all,” the Rocanville Rink Fundraising Committee wrote in an April 21 social media post.

Campbell plans to skate from dawn until dusk each day as he makes his way across the province. He will be supported by a volunteer driving crew, a camper trailer and sponsors travelling alongside the route. Organizers also estimate he will wear through an

entire set of rollerblade wheels each day, underscoring the demands of the endeavour.

“The 700 kilometre trek across Saskatchewan is a personal goal for him, but also comes with the goal to help raise funds to refurbish our community’s skating arena,” the Rocanville Rink Fundraising Committee said in a social media post announcing the initiative.

Organizers say the fundraiser reflects broader challenges facing many communities as aging recreational infrastructure requires ongoing repairs and upgrades to remain viable.

Residents can follow Campbell’s progress through the “Rocanville Rink Fundraising Committee” Facebook page and support the initiative by sending donations via e-transfer to RocanvilleRinkFC@gmail.com.

Organizers ask donors requiring receipts to contact the committee beforehand.

Heavily favourites to take the league championship after a perfect 10 - 0 regular season the Mustangs won the league championship after Rampage forfeited following one period of play.

Cash Bellefeuille opened the scoring for the Mustangs at 18:40 of the first period.

The Mustangs would go up 2 - 0 lead when 15 Cooper Fulton scored at 16:44. The assist went to Jaxyn Houle.

Blu Beach Band campaign to save Hockey Night in Canada tops 11K signatures Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

Regina-based Blu Beach Band is using its Western Canadian tour — including an upcoming stop in Moose Jaw — to rally support for keeping Hockey Night in Canada on free public television after the end of CBC’s long-running NHL broadcasts.

The four-piece indie rock group, which will perform at The Crushed Can Rec Room & Bar on July 3, launched a Change.org petition on June 16 after CBC announced it would no longer carry Hockey Night in Canada following the expiration of its sub-licensing agreement with Rogers Sportsnet.

As of June 28, the petition had attracted 11,068 verified signatures, surpassing the 11,000 mark in less than two weeks.

“For generations, Hockey Night in Canada has been an integral part of our identities as Canadians. It has brought together Canadian families from coast to coast for several generations,” the petition states. “From the spirited commentary to the iconic theme song, Hockey Night in Canada is more than just a television program; it is woven into the fabric of Canadian culture.”

The petition argues that beginning with the 2026-27 NHL season, Canadians will no longer have a free public broadcasting option to watch NHL games, requiring many viewers to purchase subscriptions to continue following the sport.

“It means that beginning with next year’s season, Canadians will have to pay more, or simply pay, to watch hockey broadcasts, as there will be no public broadcasting options for hockey in Canada,” the petition says.

“Our goal with this petition is to garner support from fellow Canadians for CBC and Rogers Sportsnet to reconsider this decision, and find a way to continue publicly broadcasting hockey games, so all Canadians can enjoy Saturday Night Hockey on a level playing field — the way it should be.”

The band has been promoting the petition at each stop of its Western Canadian “Mulligan Tour,” including its upcoming July 3 performance in Moose Jaw, encouraging audiences to sign while touring in support of its third studio album, Mulligan, released June 12.

Formed in Regina, Blu Beach Band has built a grassroots following through extensive touring, festival appearances, and a do-it-yourself approach to recording. The members regularly perform in hockey jerseys

and say Hockey Night in Canada has long been a fixture of Canadian culture, prompting them to launch the petition after CBC announced it would end its 74-year run of broadcasting NHL games.

The self-produced album Mulligan explores themes of second chances, growing older, and embracing creative freedom while blending garage rock, indie-pop, classic Canadian rock, and yacht-rock influences.

Promotional materials describe the record as the band’s most ambitious project to date.

Since emerging in Saskatchewan, Blu Beach Band has shared stages with Canadian acts including Trooper, Big Wreck, Down With Webster, and Bombargo, while earning multiple Saskatchewan Music Award nominations and accumulating more than half a million independent streams.

A summer tradition for local dancers is set to return later this month as Against the Grain Studios prepares to host its third annual Summer Dance Camp from July 17 to 19.

The three-day camp will give participants the opportunity to sample a variety of dance styles, including tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, hip hop, lyrical dance, and belly dance, while also developing flexibility through stretch and posture classes. Sessions run daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the beginner-friendly program welcoming both current students and newcomers alike.

Cheri Sweeney, front-end manager at Against the Grain, said the camp continues to evolve.

“This is our third annual dance camp,” she said. “We used to hold it over two days, but this year we’re doing it over three days. Our poster says we accept ages five and up, but children under five are welcome this year as we’ve added the (extra day).”

The expanded three-day format is one of several changes organizers have introduced for 2026, alongside welcoming younger participants and bringing in guest instructors for select classes.

“We include our current dance students, and then we are also looking to grow our studio,” Sweeney said. “So new students are completely welcome and it’s beginner-friendly.”

Rather than focusing on a single discipline, the camp offers participants an opportunity to experience a broad range of dance styles over the three days.

“It (provides) a broad overview (of dance styles),” she noted. “It will be mostly beginner-

friendly, though there will be a little more intermediate stuff in there as well, and there’s no pressure to do well.”

Against the Grain’s dance program, known as Passion for Dance, welcomes participants of all experience levels, from beginners trying dance for the first time to competitive dancers looking to further develop their skills. Throughout the year, the studio offers instruction in a variety of disciplines and emphasizes an inclusive environment

where students can build confidence, express themselves creatively, and develop a lifelong appreciation for dance.

In addition to introducing participants to different dance forms, Sweeney said the camp will help dancers develop confidence and learn how to work alongside others.

“They will definitely be working as a group.

I believe there will be a little bit of choreography work there, and just kind of incorporating yourself into a group as (an individual) dancer,” she said.

For young dancers considering joining the studio, the camp offers a glimpse of opportunities that may be available down the road. Earlier this year, four Against the Grain dancers were selected for Disney’s “Dance the Magic” program in Anaheim, Calif., where they took part in professional workshops and performed in a Disneyland parade.

Sweeney said the studio hopes the camp will introduce more families to its programs and encourage young people to discover a love of dance.

“We are accepting new students and looking to grow our studio, so if you have any interest in dance, you would be more than welcome to come,” she said.

Registration fees are $30 for a single day, $50 for two days, or $70 for all three days. Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch and water bottle each day and arrive at the studio by 10:45 a.m.

The Cost of Misreading the Room: What Scott Pelley’s Firing Teaches Us About Workplace Defiance

The sudden, explosive departure of legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley from CBS News isn’t just a media industry shocker; it’s a masterclass in how not to handle a corporate transition. Pelley didn’t just walk away; he was terminated for cause after a fiery, public confrontation. On the very first day of the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton, Pelley reportedly hijacked the staff meeting. Based on what’s been reported, it can be assumed that Pelley tried to leverage his nearly 40 years with CBS News and over 22 years with 60 Minutes to declare that the newly installed editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, was “gutting” the iconic programme, while openly questioning Bilton’s qualifications.

While Pelley’s passion for journalistic integrity has an air of nobility, his swift firing offers a stark, universal lesson for anyone drawing a paycheque: truth loses its power when it’s delivered in the wrong room, at the wrong time, and in the wrong way.

Survival in the corporate world boils down to your ability to navigate egos.

Trust me on this, with the benefit of hindsight: being right doesn’t matter if your execution is flawed.

First, consider the venue. Pelley chose an all-hands introductory meeting—a public forum packed with subordinates—to air his grievances. In the corporate world, ambushing new leadership in front of the team isn’t a professional critique; it’s a coup attempt.

When you challenge authority so openly, you leave leadership with only one viable option to preserve its credibility: hand you your walking papers.

If you want to change policy, do it behind closed doors. Public displays of

defiance are not only unprofessional, revealing an inability to control one’s emotions, but they also create hostility that could easily be avoided.

Besides picking the wrong forum, Pelley’s timing was equally poor.

He launched an ideological war on day one of an executive-mandated corporate overhaul, a time when a company’s sole objective is stability and management is hypersensitive to rebellion. Instead of reading the dashboard to gauge the engine’s temperature, Pelley chose to stand on the tracks and scream at an oncoming freight train. It’s not going to slow the train down; it’s just going to run you over. You have to know when to wait for the dust to settle before voicing your concerns.

Finally, there was the delivery.

Pelley’s approach lacked diplomacy and was laced with what Bilton called “incivility and contempt.” He traded decades of institutional leverage for a fleeting moment of performative hostility. A standing ovation from emotional colleagues might feel fantastic in the moment, but it won’t pay the bills once your security badge is deactivated. Emotional venting is never effective advocacy. The moment your argument relies on contempt rather than on tact, data, and strategy, you cease to be an asset and become a liability that management must eliminate.

Pelley’s fears about the future of 60 Minutes likely have merit; corporate changes may well alter the DNA of a legendary broadcast. However, having the moral high ground won’t protect your job if your execution is flawed. The takeaway isn’t about staying silent or tolerating bad decisions.

It’s about reading the room. You have

to pick your battles, secure your perimeter, and ensure your timing aligns with your intent. Otherwise, you’ll be another person who believes they’re right, standing on the sidewalk, holding a Bankers Box filled with your personal belongings, wishing you’d played your hand a little more strate-

I’m not sure how this fantastic team was lost but can imagine what happened.

It was most likely a meeting of senior bureaucrats in Ottawa tasked with finding cost cutting savings. Chopping the military budget was on today’s agenda.

All of those present with knowledge of the military found no place to cut. Every part of the military budget was essential, given the Armed Forces have been gradually sliced at for decades.

“We’ve got to cut something,’’ announced the chair.

But what would get cut?

“They are for show, not a part of the real Air Force. That cut would save millions.’’

“No, no,” replied a chorus of the bureaucrats.

“Never,’’ said the chair. “They are a main symbol of the country. People all around the planet know Canada by the Mounties, Snowbirds, the maple leaf and the beaver.’’

Besides they are the best recruiting tool the RCAF has ever had. The vast majority of our pilots got the urge to fly as kids when they saw the Snowbirds perform.’’

“What are we going to tell the public?’’ asked one holdout “We just spent millions rebuilding the Tutor jets to be operable until 2030.

“Now we look like fools if we say they can not fly. And what will replace them?’’

The political science grad had an answer.

“We tell the public that while we upgraded the technology we don’t know how safe the structure on the body of

these remaining jets is. And we don’t want to jeopardize the safety of the pilots who fly them.’’

Much grumbling and mumbling ensued.

“Why not fly a smaller team?’’ asked the lone holdout.

“We just don’t know which jet might give out first,’’ said the guy from the PMO office.

What about a replacement team?’’ asked the holdout. “People will expect one.’’

“We tell them a replacement team will come in four or five years,” responded the PMO type. “By then people will have forgotten about the Snowbirds.’’

And that’s how I imagine the fate of great Snowbirds tradition was determined.

The Western Development Museum (WDM) is welcoming visitors this July with a variety of handson programs and family-friendly events, from a week-long heritage camp for children to interactive gallery experiences and a weekend celebrating creativity through LEGO displays.

Upcoming events • Heritage Summer Camp: The WDM will host its Heritage Summer Camp from July 13 to 17, offering children ages seven to 10 a week of hands-on activities exploring Saskatchewan’s history.

Campers will learn skills such as typing on a traditional typewriter, making ice cream, and playing with traditional wooden toys while discovering the history of transportation. Registration is $200, or $150 for WDM members.

Registration closes July 10.

• Gallery Pop-Ups: The WDM will host a Gallery Pop-Up on July 22 from 1 to 5 p.m., featuring interactive displays on topics including novelty silks, Victorian hair art, railways, and more. The program is included with regular museum admission and is free for WDM members.

• Brickspo: The WDM will welcome Brickspo on July 25 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., showcasing original LEGO creations by members of the Saskatchewan LEGO Users Group (SLUG) and builders from across Western Canada. The event will feature themed displays, public talks, a LEGO yard sale, vendors, and family-friendly activities.

Regular museum admission applies, with free entry for WDM members.

• Adopt-a-Bench program: The museum’s Adopt-a-Bench program is open, with a limited number of benches available at all four WDM locations: Moose Jaw,

North Battleford, Saskatoon, and Yorkton. For a $3,500 donation, supporters can dedicate a bench for 10 years with a personalized plaque featuring a name or special message, subject to approval.

Each gift includes a charitable tax receipt and recognition on donor walls at all WDM locations.

K+S Short Line 101 To demonstrate the raw power of steam energy, the WDM showcases its fully operational K+S Potash Canada Short Line 101 steam train each summer, and guests can catch a ride on a working piece of Saskatchewan’s history. Operating

since 1978, this is Saskatchewan’s only operating steam locomotive.

• Upcoming train schedule: The K+S Potash Canada Short Line 101 continues its summer operating season throughout July, with the Vulcan steam locomotive offering 10- to 15-minute rides around the museum grounds on select operating days. Visitors are encouraged to call the museum ahead of their visit to confirm the train will be operating, as rides are subject to weather, volunteer availability, and mechanical conditions.

Reminiscence Kits The museum’s Reminiscence Kits are meant to bring generations together and ignite new friendships through the sharing of memories.

Police are urging residents to remain vigilant as scammers continue using sophisticated tactics to steal money and personal information, warning that fraud attempts now range from threatening emails to fraudulent door-to-door paving contractors.

The Moose Jaw Police Service (MJPS) says it regularly receives reports of fraud-related incidents, although most are isolated cases rather than co-ordinated schemes specifically targeting Moose Jaw residents.

“Broadly, we see scams becoming more sophisticated, using phone, email, and in some cases AI tools, with the objective of obtaining personal information or money,” MJPS said in a written

statement.

While recent advisories have highlighted several different types of scams, police say they all share a common goal: convincing victims to act before thinking critically about the situation.

Email extortion scams One recent advisory highlighted an email extortion scam in which fraudsters claim to have gained access to a recipient’s personal device or compromising information. The emails often threaten to release embarrassing photos, videos, or other private material unless the victim pays a ransom, usually in cryptocurrency.

Police say these scams rely on fear and intimidation rather than legitimate

evidence, with the vast majority of the claims being entirely fabricated. Their goal is to pressure recipients into acting quickly before verifying the message or questioning the claims.

The most recent incident reported to the MJPS ended without financial loss after the recipient recognized the scam and did not respond or send money.

“The email scam we recently highlighted exemplifies a widespread, impersonal, and non-centralized scam, so local investigations are generally limited in scope. In the most recent case shared publicly, the resident recognized the scam and did not fall victim, so no fur-

ther investigation was triggered.”

Door-to-door paving contractors Police are also warning residents to be cautious when approached by out-ofprovince contractors offering discounted asphalt or paving work.

Police say the scheme typically begins with an unsolicited offer for discounted work, often presented as a limited-time opportunity intended to create a sense of urgency. Police warn residents to remain vigilant as scammers use fear, urgency to target victims, continued ly. Because the operators often move quickly from community to community, resolving disputes or recovering money can become difficult once payment has been made.

“This in-person scheme … seeks to take advantage of individuals by creating a sense of urgency by offering a lastminute ‘discount’ within a limited time frame,” the MJPS said.

Police recommend obtaining a detailed written quote before agreeing to any work and are working with other enforcement agencies to investigate companies moving from community to community.

Recognizing the warning signs Police say one of the clearest indicators of a scam is a message that creates urgency or panic.

“A major warning sign is when a message creates urgency or panic.

Scammers want you to act before you think, whether that means clicking a link, sending money, or sharing personal information,” the MJPS said.

Requests for payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency should also

raise concerns because those methods are difficult to trace and allow scammers to receive money anonymously.

Police say residents should also be wary of generic messages, although advances in artificial intelligence mean some scams can now appear highly personalized.

Another increasingly common tactic, used in scams such as the “grandparent scam,” involves impersonating trusted people or organizations.

“Scammers may pose as a friend, family member, or trusted institution in order to gain access to personal information, accounts, or money. This tactic relies on exploiting trust, and it’s becoming increasingly common across many types of scams.”

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam should record as much information as possible and contact police.

“Always be vigilant,” police said.

“Scammers and fraudsters look for opportunities to take advantage of people.

Consider using call and email screening tools to filter suspicious contacts and re-

duce exposure to potential scams.”

Families will use pond skimming kits and field microscopes to explore the Moose Jaw River and discover the aquatic life that calls it home. The group will meet at the Kiwanis River Park Pavilion & Lodge.

• Cree: The People’s Language: The Canadian Language Museum’s travelling exhibit Cree: The People’s Language will be on display at the library from July 13 to 19, introducing visitors to the history, diversity, and enduring significance of the Cree language through maps, displays, and audio recordings.

• Diverse City: Diverse City is a recurring program at the MJPL offering a welcoming, inclusive

Zest I have always had a zest for celebrating Canada Day. As a kid growing up in Ontario, Canada Day meant family picnics. In Manitoba, during the 1980s, I had a zest for hiking in Riding Mountain National Park on the July 1st holiday. As a young family, we attended Canada Day parades and festivals on the waterfront while we lived in Sarnia, Ontario. Our years in Moose Jaw meant a zest for watching the fireworks with friends and family.

Zest means keen enjoyment. Her personality was always bubbly and she had a definite zest for living.

Zest can also imply an enjoyable exciting quality.

Whenever we go to concerts at the Regina Casino we find that the humour of the entertainers can add zest to the performance.

The English of the mid-1600s, used zest to refer to tiny pieces of citrus rind that were used to enhance the flavour of food and beverages. The recipe called for adding zest from oranges to provide an additional taste experience.

In the 1700s, zest’s association with citrus peel adding flavor to food and beverages evolved to imply anything that adds excitement or interest to a dish or a conversation can be labelled zest. Eventually zest was extended to suggest enthusiastic enjoyment.

Synonyms for zest include spice, piquancy, zing, tang, relish, and gusto.

Spice implies the state of being stimulating to the mind or senses. Once a person hits retirement age a new hobby will add spice to life.

Piquancy denotes the quality of bringing mental or sensual excitement. The tension between her reserved nature and his dramatic personality gave the show’s hosts an unusual piquancy.

Zing refers to active strength of body or mind. Our one granddaughter has the adventurous zing to go out and conquer anything.

Tang means the quality of being invigorating to the mind or senses. The way he told the story of his trip to Japan gave me a certain tang of excitement.

Relish is the enjoyment of or delight in something that satisfies one’s tastes, inclinations, or desires. I eat barbecued hamburgers with great relish, because I love them topped with mustard and relish.

Gusto implies vitality marked by an abundance of vigor and enthusiasm. The Riders were able to match the opposition’s gusto for most of the game.

On July 1 add some zest to your celebrations of Canada Day. You could garnish your cheesecake with some zest on top, orange or lemon or lime rind. Some might like to add zest to their cocktail or beer or mixed drink. Get together with family or friends and revel with zest in your particular festivities for Canada Day.

Don Cherry statue relocated as ‘Meet Me in Mortlach’ chapter comes to a close Aaron Walker - Moose Jaw Express

The towering Don Cherry sculpture along Highway 1 that became the signature landmark of Mortlach’s “Meet Me in Mortlach” initiative has found a new home, marking the end of one chapter for the community project that sought to transform the village into a prairie destination.

The 15-foot wooden carving of Cherry and his dog, Blue, has been relocated to the community of Major, Sask., after being sold to a private buyer. The move comes as the owners of the property where the Bohemian Market operated prepare to sell the land.

Mike Beaudoin, one of the organizers behind the Meet Me in Mortlach initiative, said the relocation was prompted by the need to clear the property and ensure everything remaining at the site can be relocated quickly if required.

“We’ve had a few people inquire about the property, and I just can’t be in a position to hold them up,” Beaudoin said. “Everything we’re putting out there has to be able to move at a moment’s notice.”

Created by British Columbia chainsaw sculptor Darren Jones from locally sourced Manitoba maple, the sculpture was unveiled in May 2024 at the entrance to Mortlach along the Trans-Canada Highway. The colourful roadside attraction quickly gained national attention, drawing visitors from across Canada and serving as the centrepiece of the Bohemian Market and the broader village initiative.

Although the statue became closely associated with Mortlach, Beaudoin said he always envisioned it eventually finding a permanent home elsewhere.

“My whole hope was that one day (the statue would) end up in an arena or somewhere special, and the story would continue on,” he said. “I never had intentions of keeping it.”

Beaudoin said he had received inquiries about purchasing the sculpture almost from the day it was unveiled. The buyer, a sports enthusiast from Major who owns a trucking and rental business in the Swift Current area, intends to create a community attraction around the piece.

The relocation effectively marks the conclusion of the original Meet Me in Mortlach initiative, which launched in 2024 with the goal of revitalizing the village through a seasonal marketplace featuring public art, local vendors, food, live entertainment,

and community events. While the initiative attracted attention through a series of large-scale public art installations — including a carving of late Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie unveiled earlier this year — it also raised funds for the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank through charity auctions, donated meal programs, and other community events while working toward its long-term vision of creating a permanent venue for seasonal artists, vendors, and entertainers.

Earlier this month, Jones returned to Mortlach to relocate the Gord Downie sculpture and an eagle carving to Alberta, where he plans to incorporate both pieces into future art projects.

With the property changing hands and Beaudoin now focusing on smaller-scale projects as he approaches retirement, the original Meet Me in Mortlach initiative gradually came to a natural conclusion.

“I’m going to be 70 here in a couple years,” he said. “I’m just doing a couple projects each year, and I want to donate the rest of my time around the country.”

The original market site will not remain entirely empty. Beaudoin said he plans to install several movable sculptures, including a 15-foot kinetic weather vane featuring a Grim Reaper with independently moving sections, along with benches and a small rest area where travellers can safely stop while passing through the area.

Although the larger Meet Me in Mortlach vision has come to an end, Beaudoin said he hopes those future projects will continue encouraging motorists to pull off Highway 1, stretch their legs, and discover a little more of rural Saskatchewan.
