“No Pause. Keep the Snowbirds Flying” campaign in full-gear

For many Moose Jaw residents, the Snowbirds are Canada’s military aerobatic team and part of the city’s identity.

That connection has contributed to support for the “No Pause. Keep the Snowbirds Flying” campaign amid discussion of a possible multiyear pause in the team’s operations.

The campaign is not a fundraiser in itself but is a grassroots advocacy effort encouraging Canadians to contact Members of Parliament, sign letters and petitions, and raise awareness about the Snowbirds’ transition from the CT-114 Tutor aircraft to a replacement fleet.

Interest in the campaign increased after the federal government announced the Snowbirds will complete the 2026 air show season before entering a transition period while new aircraft are acquired and crews are trained.

While the modernization of the fleet is supported by various stakeholders, some have raised concerns about the possibility of an extended gap in operations.

Snowbirds have been based at 15 Wing for more than 50 years, the team is associated with local aviation activity and tourism. Their performances and training flights attract visitors to the city and contribute to business activity in sectors such as hospitality and retail. The team is also connected to recruitment and public awareness efforts related to aviation and military service.

Moose Jaw City Council has reaffirmed its support for the Snowbirds and has called on the federal government to provide clearer timelines for

the transition. Council has also requested that options be considered to reduce or eliminate any gap between the retirement of the Tutor aircraft and the introduction of replacements.

Campaign organizers state that the initiative is intended as an appeal for public engagement rather than a protest. They indicate the objective is to encourage decisionmakers to consider measures that would allow the Snowbirds to continue operations with limited interruption.

The issue has been discussed locally in terms of

its connection to community identity, economic activity, and the city’s association with the Snowbirds as a longstanding military unit based in Moose Jaw. Support for the campaign continues to develop among some residents and community groups in the city and facilitated by “No Pause. Keep the Snowbirds Flying” campaign committee. Moose Jaw Express office located at 468 High Street in Moose Jaw has petition postcard available to sign that will be mailed from the office.

The 5th Annual Dave Banting Memorial Golf Tournament set to be family, friends and fun

Linda Wilde and Brian Banting are busily planning, gearing up and even warning neighbors of what’s to come as they prepare for the 5th Annual Dave Banting Memorial Golf tournament.

“I’ve warned my neighbours that these two Harleys will be pulling in Tuesday afternoon, ‘cause my younger brother wants to make sure his music is cranked because he’s really loud just to let everyone know he’s in Moose Jaw,” Brian laughed.

Their two brothers, Brent and Terry, are biking all the way from B.C. to take part in the event and are even taking their dad along for the ride. After he passed, Dave was cremated, his ashes placed into pouches made by his wife, Fran.

“My brothers have his ashes in their motorbikes,” Linda explained, “…so they say, ‘Every time we go for a ride, Dad comes with (us). They always call it their Memorial Dave Banting Ride.”

Also called the ‘Family and Friends Classic,’ the tournament takes place August 6 at Lynbrook Golf Course, where Dave played frequently and served as a prominent member of the board.

“I golf at the Lynbrook and there’s quite a few guys asking about my dad,” Brian said. “They’ve golfed with him, they’ve even called me Dave,” he laughed.

One time he was marshalling at the golf course and accidentally cut across where he shouldn’t have been and a golfer hit a ball close to him. “I went back to apologize and he said, ‘No, no, I wanted to meet you!” Brian grinned.

“Your dad was on the board; we were good friends.’”

While the golf tournament was first created as a simple way to honour their father, it has since blossomed into the perfect excuse for friends and family to reunite from across the continent, as far as Nebraska, sometimes for the first time in decades.

“Now there’s kind of a reason for cousins and everybody to come back to Moose Jaw,” Brian said. “Some of the cousins I hadn’t seen in probably 30 years, more than that.”

“I think as I get older, family becomes more important,” Linda added.

“And not only family, but also the friends that have grown to mean so much.

“Sometimes it’s the friends that you spend more time with that become like family.”

The golf tournament has grown from two teams the first year to nine teams last year, by far the largest turnout with a total of over 75 people taking part in the celebrations, as it coincided with their mother Fran’s 90th birthday.

“Last year it was very difficult to get a group shot because there were so many!” Linda said proudly. They’re expecting around 50 people this year, including golfers and those who just want to join in the reunion.

While teams had not yet been named at the time of publication, last year the “BS’ers” won, just to give an idea of what’s to come, though they insist it’s just a play on the initials of team members.

Brian piped in that a certain Gord Miller was added last minute due to someone having to drop out, and let’s just say he fit right in with the spirit of the team name.

When asked who the biggest smack talker in the group would be, Linda didn’t hesitate to say Rob, a cousin who didn’t make it last year but is joining this time, with honourable mention going to their eldest brother.

“You would think Terry’s the youngest the way he acts,” Brian said, grinning.

Linda added, “He’s been so excited, calling up: ‘Three more sleeps! Two more sleeps!’”

Small prizes will be given out for closest to the pin and longest drive among others, but the biggest bragging

rights this year will go to the person who gets to wear the prestigious green jacket, inspired by the green jacket of Masters Tournament fame, with patches sewn on the crest to commemorate the winners.

According to his kids Linda and Brian, Dave Banting was a calm, patient man and a very hard worker, but his son Terry’s memorial tattoo shows a whole other side to him.

“I think their green jacket in the Masters is a little nicer color green,” Linda added. “The big part is just the togetherness, the community.”

Two old friends who haven’t seen each other in about fifty years will both be in attendance at the upcoming tournament, and one of them has no idea. Since the Moose Jaw Express doesn’t want to spill the beans like a certain cousin did about Fran’s ‘surprise’ party last year, you’ll have to tune in next week if you’d like to follow that story.

Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Dave Banting had many other skills and talents aside from golf, which he took up after his retirement.

“I think Dad was kind of a natural at whatever sport he decided to play,” Linda recalled. “But hockey was a big one, lacrosse too.”

He attended the Chicago Blackhawks training camp, obtained a full hockey scholarship at Denver University, which was very rare in the 50s, and also played for the Moose Jaw Canucks, who preceded the Warriors from the early 1930s until 1984.

He met his wife Fran while he was playing hockey in Regina. After they married, Dave was transferred to Saskatoon, then B.C. where they remained for many years.

While some of their strongest memories of their father include how hard he worked and what a patient and calm presence he was as they were growing up, Linda pulled out an old photograph of him, exact year unknown, sporting a black T-shirt, Ray-Ban sunglasses and cigarettes tucked into his sleeve.

“He had quite the sense of humor as well,” Linda continued. “You always think your parents are old and they’ve never done anything, right? That’s when we looked back at this photograph and thought, “He was kind of a ‘bad-ass!’”

Their brother Terry liked the photo so much that he used it as inspiration for a memorial tattoo.

“Our other brother also has a tattoo for Dad, but it’s…” Linda said hesitantly.

“That’s for another day. That’ll be next year’s feature,” she and Brian laughed, leaving that one a mystery.

Heat benefits, deters crop development

The annual golf tournament has given them a great way to spread much of the warmth they experienced growing up as Dave and Fran’s children.

“In their house it was always very open. It was a good place, lots of family and friends, it always seems that our place was a hub – the door was open, you knew you could come. I think that’s how my grandparents were as well, it was open door. I think we’ve lost that somewhere along the way.”

Linda recalls being surprised when she learned her parents had decided to settle back in Moose Jaw in 1995, after

so many years in B.C. “Us kids would say, ‘Why would you want to retire there?’ And look at me now, I’ve moved here too!” she laughed.

“Moose Jaw is a great city, there’s lots to do here.”

Sixty-two years after leaving, Brian decided to do the same, and is also enjoying his retirement in Moose Jaw. When asked what she thought her dad would think of the tournament, Linda paused and thought for a moment: “I think he’d really like it. He’d probably wish he was here to golf too.”

Warm weather in the last two weeks of July was a double-edged sword for crops in this province.

Heat caused rapid progress in crops but the heat also deterred crops in drier areas, such as the southwest.

Signs of browning grass can be seen in this region.

For the most part crops are in good condition, according to the weekly Sask. Agriculture crop report for the period ended July 27. Some are variable.

Most winter and spring cereal crops are in good to excellent condition.

Oilseed crops are mostly in good condition but the heat stressed some crops while flowering and will reduce yield.

Two-thirds to three quarters of pulse crops are in good to excellent condition with the exception being some crops stressed from excess moisture in the spring.

Producers in the southwest need rain.

Half of the hay crop has been baled or put in silage with 28 per cent cut, Twenty-two per cent is still standing.

In this region 70 per cent is baled or in silage, 20 per cent cut and 10 per cent standing Provincially hay quality is rated 29 per cent excellent, 62 per cent good, nine per cent fair.

That differs slightly in the southwest wth 16 per cent excellent, 79 per cent good, and nine per cent fair.

At a recent Council meeting, officials touted the City’s financial health, declaring our city is in good shape. But as a resident, does that match your reality?

Let’s look at the math.

Over the last four years, inflation has risen by 14%. Meanwhile, residential property taxes have skyrocketed by 31%, and JOAN RITCHIE - total property tax revenue is up Moose Jaw Express a massive 39%. All this is hapEDITOR pening in a city where the population has remained pretty well stagnant. We are paying significantly more, but are we getting more in return?

The numbers suggest a clear disconnect in priorities. Total operating budget expenditures have jumped 31.8% since 2021. When we dig into where that money goes, the picture is telling us that the bureaucratic costs at City Hall have surged by 40.3%. Parks and Rec spending has ballooned by 50.1%.

Now, look at our roads. Despite the sad state of our infrastructure, the Department of Public Works— the team responsible for keeping our streets driveable—saw their budget increase by just 25%.

It is a simple question of priorities. While administrative and office spending has consistently outpaced inflation and population growth, the core services residents rely on—like the roads we drive on every day—seem to be getting the short end of the stick. If the City is truly in “good financial shape,” perhaps it is time they invested in the services that actually matter to the taxpayers footing the bill.

Moose Jaw’s vibrant music scene is one of the things that makes our city truly special, and there is no better way to experience it than at the Moose Jaw Health Foundation’s “Concerts in the Park.”

Now in its 31st season, this beloved summer tradition brings incredible local talent to the Crescent Park Amphitheatre every Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is a fantastic opportunity for residents of all ages to unwind, enjoy some toetappin’ tunes, and soak up the summer air.

While admission is free, these evenings are also a vital fundraiser for our Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital. This year, donations go directly toward purchasing new hospital beds, ensuring our local health care teams have the equipment they need to provide the best care possible.

There is something undeniably relaxing about being on or by the water, casting a line, and letting the world drift away. Fishing has long been one of our most treasured pastimes—a quiet way to reconnect with nature and find a moment of peace in our busy lives.

I was delighted to hear about a recent event that brought this joy to so many. The South Saskatchewan Wildlife Association and the Wakamow Valley Authority teamed up to host a wonderful free fishing day, welcoming residents of all ages to try their hand at the sport. Even better, they generously provided free fishing poles and tackle to every participant, removing any barriers for those just starting out.

Seeing the excitement on the faces of new anglers reminded me that the best hobbies are often the simplest ones. It seems quite a few might now be “hooked” on fishing for a lifetime. A huge thank you to the organizers for fostering such a great community spirit—here’s to many more days by the water.

Concerts in the Park delights music lovers of all ages

On Wednesday, July 29, the Crescent Park Amphitheatre was bustling with great tunes, laughter, dancing and even a long-awaited cool breeze, as Concerts in the Park hit the stage.

No Time Flat took to the stage for their first-ever performance as a band, featuring members from Southey and Moose Jaw, and were met with a warm, appreciative crowd. A group of tiny dancers stole the show at times, boogying to classics such as ‘Big River,’ ‘Hey Good Lookin,’ and one that will likely be stuck in attendees’ heads for a week: ‘Achy Breaky Heart.’

Concerts in the Park, put on each year by the Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF), is now in its 31st season and shows no signs of slowing down.

Each year, the event raises funds for the MJHF, always with the aim of improving health care for the community of Moose Jaw. This year’s donations will go towards new hospital beds used by over 4,200 long-term patients each year at Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital.

The event is free for everyone to enjoy, however those who are able are encouraged to donate any amount of their choice to the MJHF, to be collected by volunteers at the end of the show.

Kelly McElree, CEO of MJHF, is thrilled with how the event is going so far.

“The turnout has been fantastic,” McElree said. “It’s just a pleasure for the foundation to put it on each and every single year.

Concerts in the park is one of the things that make Moose Jaw special.

“All the volunteers come out and the musicians sing their hearts out and we appreciate it, especially when we’re raising funds for the new hospital beds.

Our donors give us so much and

so many of the people that come out here have been patients at the hospital. It’s a real ‘show up’ community and we’re very thankful for that.”

Concerts in the Park takes place every Wednesday from 7-8:30 until August 19. Heritage Fiddlers will perform August 5, Sing Along with Wayne on August 12 and finally a special performance by a yet-to-beannounced performer for the August 19 finale which will start a little earlier at 6:30.

August in the Garden When August rolls in, the garden is at its best! Produce is rapidly being produced and the colours of what is in bloom is endless. However, for the gardener, life is busy as this is the month where a lot of harvest happens.

Although nature begins to remind us that fall is near, there is still time to enjoy some warm sunshine during daylight hours.

The manic days of summer have passed and our chores involve that endless tie-up of floppy flowers and tomatoes; harvesting what is ripe and removing the odd tenacious weed.

Deadheading perennials and annuals that have finished blooming is a good chore and produces more blooms to enjoy. It is also a good time to replant lettuce and spinach that have gone to seed as the cool weather that is coming is perfect for these crops. Prune

back annual herbs to ensure that the bounty continues. My basil crop has been rejuvenated once again and will sure to continue to grace our table for the next couple of months.

During August it is important to pay special watering attention to tomatoes and corn. Water corn, tomatoes and eggplant regularly and ensure they are getting enough nutrients. If you do not pay attention to ensuring these crops are evenly watered the result will be poor and reduced yields.

Harvest fruit when it is at its peak to ensure happy eating and that if you are processing or storing the products, they are in the best form. Prairie cherries should be ripening so get them before the birds do. Early season apples may also be ready so keep an eye on what is ripening.

Prune back the tips of vine crops and indeterminate tomatoes to force the plants to put their energy into sizing up and ripening the fruit that is present. It may be possible to gently take some new potatoes from the edges of the potato patch. Nothing beats freshly harvested potatoes with fresh dill and a creamy, buttery sauce.

to keep turning the compost to make the most of the heat in August. Manage your weeds to ensure that they do not go to seed and create future problems. If weeds have gone to seed, choose not to put the seedy parts in the compost as it is unlikely your compost pile gets hot enough to kill the weed seeds.

Keep an eye out for sales as you are sure to need supplies for next spring. As long as you have space to store the product, you will save some time and money by buying what is available at a preferred price. I like to stock up on anything that is still available as I always am short of stakes, and other structures for plants to climb on.

If there is some left in the stores, they are usually at a price that is extremely attractive.

ously pick flowers. It encourages more growth, more bloom and nothing beats fresh cut bouquets in the house.

I look at it as a continuation of the garden into our indoor spaces. To me a house that has fresh flowers really makes your home beautiful.

I do a fair amount of canning in August. Although I certainly need less food throughout the year due to the children living elsewhere as adults, I know that what I have canned makes amazing gifts. It is also handy to have some quality food available when unexpected guests come to visit. I just had a couple of weeks with my grown children, their partners and grand children visiting and they all loved raiding my cold room. Putting food by might be a dying art but it is for sure very appreciated.

From The Kitchen Three or four scoops of salads, only one hotdog, please

By Joyce Walter - For Moose Jaw Express At potluck suppers, my plate is usually filled with a variety of salads, leaving only a small space for whichever meat is being served.

The variety of salads appearing usually ranges through all renderings of pasta and cabbage, potatoes and boiled eggs, to a sampling of meat complementing a spicy rendition of vegetables and sweetness. And look at that one over there — surely it should be on the dessert table.

This week’s column features some salads to be enjoyed at home or taken to a neighbourhood gathering where potatoes might mingle with bacon and seafood.

••• Whipped Cream Chicken Salad 2 cups cooked chicken, chopped 2 cups chopped celery 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts pinch of salt 1/2 cup whipping cream, whipped 1 tsp. icing sugar 1 tsp. prepared mustard 1/8 tsp. pepper 1 tbsp. lemon juice

Combine chicken, celery, walnuts and salt in a large bowl.

Whip the cream. Combine with icing sugar, mustard, pepper and lemon juice.

Add to chicken mixture. Toss and check if more salt is needed.

Serve over chopped lettuce. Makes 4 generous servings.

••• Warm Potato Salad 4 cups cooked potatoes, cubed 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 tbsp. butter 1/2 cup cooked ham, cubed 1/2 cup salad dressing or mayonnaise 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper Cook potatoes and keep hot.

Combine onion and butter in frying pan. Fry slowly until limp and clear.

Stir in ham, salad dressing, salt and pepper. Heat through. Pour over potatoes that have been moved to a large bowl. Toss and serve.

ER study highlights health care mess Another broken link in Canada’s creaky health care chain has been exposed by a Queens’ University study on emergency services.

The study concludes that 24-hour emergency care in Canada is at risk.

A survey of emergency room doctors showed one in 10 have or are leaving the job. Forty-five per cent have reduced the hours they will work.

And one in five has taken off time to deal with burnout.

Doctors in the survey said the long wait times for care and hallway care have become the new normal without any hope for change in sight, so some leave. Others deal with the stress by cutting their hours or taking time off.

The ER doctors say they don’t have enough time to really address patient care and patients blame them for being unable to treat them fully.

Saskatchewan has tried to address the ER matter by opening several urgent care centres. The centres perform lots of

Stir in peaches and pineapple. Mix in marshmallows.

Whip cream until stiff. Fold into fruit. Spoon into a ring mold or empty soup cans that have been cleaned and sterilized.

Freeze and then cover to store.

To serve canned salad, open bottom end of can and push salad out onto a plate. Slice just before serving. Serves 8.

This may also be served as a dessert with cake slices or cookies.

An aging population with more complex needs worsens the issue.

The study’s authors suggest government should invest in more geriatric care for the seniors and fix gaps in primary health care (doctor shortage) to take the strain off ER services.

In the early 2000s this Scribbler recalls an interview with a health region CFO saying the system hoped to get over an increase in need for long-term care beds without building new facilities.

They did. But another jump in needs has arrived. Few new beds have been added since as the seniors’ numbers grew. Most of the new beds replaced beds that had been closed.

The province has added hundreds of new doctors but that still doesn’t meet the need. To alleviate the shortage of

primary doctors the nurse practitioner program was started — a nice start but not enough.

In the 1970s a foresighted government built the Plains Hospital in Regina.

It was supposed to become the central major hospital for rural southern Saskatchewan.

In 1994 the government planned closure for 1997 of Regina’s third hospital. Reasons for closing: The city didn’t need a third hospital and the cost of updating the building to new standards was too high.

Soon after closure the money was found to update and repurpose the building for SIAST — now Sask. Polytech.

In the early years of this century Saskatchewan Party Leader Brad Wall stumped the province with promises to get the economy moving and increase the population from its 990 some thousand stable base.

for health care and education. His party won election.

Well, the population has increased beyond expectations. Where there were four people there are now five as population is around 1.25 million, What Wall didn’t say is that more people would put a strain on government services like health care and education.

We have the same number of hospital beds and long term care beds and school rooms dealing with 25 per cent more residents.

When the province did build new hospitals not enough beds were included Some observers blame the health care mess on the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown. That played a role in burnout of health care workers with many taking early retirement.

One root of the health care matter has been decades of underfunding by the federal and provincial governments.

City Finances By The Numbers

At a recent City Council meeting, the elected officials received the Audited Statement and Public Accounts for 2025 along with assurances that the City of Moose Jaw is in good financial shape.

Before a deeper dive into the financial information, a brief summary of other statistics can provide context.

Population of Moose Jaw - Statistics Canada Census data 1986- 35,073 2016- 33,910 2021- 33,665 2024- 33,579 Statistics Canada estimate Consumer Price Index (inflation) as measured in Regina 2022- 6.7% 2023- 2.9% 2024- 2% 2025- 2.1%

Compounded, an increase of 14% the past four years REVENUES City of Moose Jaw residential property tax increases 2023- 4.6% 2024- 8.93% 2025- 6.1% 2026- 8.05% Compounded, up 31% the past four years.

According to the financial records provided Council, property tax revenues (tax increases and assessment growth) went from $30,774,914 to $42,809,335; an increase of 39% over four years compared to inflation of 14%. This in a city with stagnant population growth.

Revenues from utilities also increased, albeit only 23% over the four years, going from $28,277,736 to $34,790,105.

One of these cute little guys got trapped in our garage the other day... I lost track of him and I was concerned but too busy with our garage-sale to go looking. Bees are fundamentally important you know.

Well, I sort of forgot about it, but this morning I found him struggling on the floor of my bedroom downstairs! I could have stepped on him by accident; he was so directly in my path. So, I got some paper for him to climb on and gingerly/happily helped him outside where he flew away with aplomb. I have to admit my heart soared just ever so slightly as I watched him leaving.

I guess it struck me casually, as my fuzzy friend flew off, that maybe God looked after that little detail as a reminder of His care for me too. Amid the maelstrom of bad news that we so often see on our screens, I admittedly struggle at times believing that He is in control of it all, and least of all that He could be con-

cerned with the minutia of my own life.

Words from the old Spiritual that my mom loved from my childhood came to mind. “My constant friend is He, His eye is on the Sparrow, and I know he watches [over] me.” I guess He sees the bees too.

Your concept of God may not be the same as mine, and at the risk of sounding “woo-woo” I won’t try to over-spiritualize this post or say that I think it is for somebody specific.

But what happened this morning was one of those weird, timeless, and, perhaps, very-timely moments where I felt just the gentlest brush of the divine. Like the softest breeze that blows on your face and tousles your hair as it passes. Maybe like the Father’s hand, and for just a moment you feel... seen.

I hope this is uplifting for any that may stop to read it. You are loved. RJB.

EXPENDITURES On the City’s expenditure side, overall Operating Budget expenditures increased 31.8% over the four years 2021-2025, going from $84,260,577 to $111,117,216. This at a time when many sarcastically say are indicative of significantly improved City services!

CITY HALL BUREAUCRACY COSTS UP A closer look shows that the General Government budget line- the one that pays for the bureaucracy of City Hall- increased 40.3% from 2021 to 2025, going from $9,251,416 to $12,981,228.

PARKS AND REC MORE CASH Not to be outdone, the Department of Community Services which used to be called Parks, Recreation and Facilities, increased spending by 50.1%, going from $16,164,496 to $24,265,088.

PUBLIC WORKS SEEMINGLY SHORTCHANGED Given the sad state of Moose Jaw’s roads and infrastructure, it can be noted that over the four years, while City Hall bureaucracy went up 40.3% and Parks, Rec. and Facilities went up 50.1%, the department of Public Works increased only 25%, from $9,750,137 to $12,199,416.

Free Fishing Event brings together locals for a nice opportunity to cast a fishing rod Submitted

July 11th, 2026, South Saskatchewan Wildlife Association and Wakamow Valley Authority partnered to present a “Free Fishing Event”, for the community of Moose Jaw. Children received a free fishing pole and tackle kit, along with education on fishing techniques.

This year’s attendance was approximated 75 people, an increase from the previous year. Although the fish weren’t biting (due to the hot weather), participants enjoyed biting into a hot dog following the event.

One-half of my birthday gift stolen one recent night This is an open letter to the thief or thieves who stole part of my birthday present.

Shame on you!

On the morning of my birthday back at the beginning of February, I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone had erected signs advising drivers to stay the correct distance away from either side of our driveway.

The nephew and niece confessed to working with stealth to erect the signs without being caught in the act. Unfortunately, when the snow melted, the signs would not stand up and could not be forced into the frozen ground. We could hardly wait for a proper spring to arrive so we could use the signs to politely ask drivers to stay back or face the consequences.

We eventually were able to erect the signs and it was delightful to be able to drive in and out of our driveway without having to worry about the placement of

vehicles on the street. We know we can’t keep anyone off the public street but we can make use of the city bylaw that governs the distance those vehicles have to maintain away from private driveways.

In addition to the signs being a deterrent, they were also a form of entertainment as we watched drivers park and then stop to read the signs. Some realized they might be towed and drove away to find another spot. Others glanced around and hurried off to the event for which they were already late.

And so the days went. No one got towed and drivers respected the message about a private driveway.

Then we got up one morning to discover that a thief or thieves had wandered off with one of the signs.

“Who would steal my sign?” I asked Housemate. He had no answer.

Was it a solitary thief, or was it a gang out on the street looking for “no parking” signs to steal? Why didn’t the

and Karl Subban were the guest speakers on a future readers panel on July 17 in the Mae Wilson Theatre, as part of the 30th annual Festival of Words.

Fewer readers Moderator Amanda Leduc asked the authors what parents could do to foster a love of reading in kids while competing with television and video games.

Karl Subban, a former school principal, said children are motivated by autonomy, purpose and mastery, so parents should let them choose what they read. Data show more than 86 per cent of young people read for fun, so children’s books should be fun, repetitive

their kids past age five, Subban continued. Data also shows children read less as they grow up — it’s Canadians’ fifthmost important leisure activity — so parents should encourage them to read what interests them.

Smith said parents must be role models, similar to principals she knows who sit in commons areas and read to students. This creates curiosity in children since they see older people reading.

Continuing, the award-winning author said that even listening to books can galvanize kids. Her “little heaven on Earth” is walking barefoot in the garden while listening to an audiobook, which

her children see her do regularly.

The future of reading Leduc asked the trio how optimistic they were about children reading in the future.

Smith said she remained optimistic, recalling how one son once tried hiding one book inside another at a bookstore because he couldn’t decide which to buy.

To her, it’s good news if kids find it difficult to choose between reading various books.

Kuipers said she was optimistic, especially since children and youths regularly write and say they connected with something in her books or ask when her next novels are coming out.

Subban said that while society lives in a digital age, books are “not divorced” from that reality. So, he was encouraged that literacy is becoming more digitized, since today’s youths are digital natives.

Yet, research shows children “still love the (physical) book.”

AI and books The authors were asked whether

people — including children and youths — should rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to read and summarize books for them.

Kuipers said readers should not outsource their experiences to technology, whether it’s eating at an upscale restaurant, playing hockey or raising kids.

People have that choice, but they won’t live, breathe, feel or inhabit that literary world.

Subban acknowledged that there are challenges in the digital age, but adults must be intentional in fostering a culture and love of reading in homes and schools.

Smith recalled having an “incredible” English teacher who reminded students that the more they said “yes” to life, the more they would grow — similar to the class’s pet fish. So, if youths are going to experience life, the author thought they should read.

Quoting renowned author George R.R. Martin, Subban said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”

Book lover Jody Jones has attended the Festival of Words since 2017 and, besides taking home books and pictures of her favourite authors, she has also acquired festival-themed T-shirts.

it’s like a memory of the event. It’s like when you go to a concert, you usually buy a T-shirt,” said Jones.

“I like to get the shirts for the festival because it’s like the favourite thing I do in the whole year.”

Of the nine T-shirts Jones has purchased over the past 10 years, she said her favourite one was from 2024 when actor and comedian Brent Butt attended.

Jones was one of hundreds of people who attended this year’s festival and was one of several people the Moose Jaw Express spoke to about their thoughts on the event.

“I’ve never seen people turned away from events (and sessions) before, but I’ve been seeing that this year,” she said.

“So … it’s always busy, but there are more people here this year.”

Some authors Jones enjoyed seeing included Alice Kuipers, Yann Martel and Zarqa Nawaz. Kuipers is known for her young adult novels, Martel — a Booker Prize-winning author — wrote Life of Pi, and Nawaz created the Little Mosque on the Prairie TV series.

Jones said she spoke with several authors, which is one feature she enjoys about the festival. She pointed out that

an amazing feat for the festival to reach its 30th anniversary. She noted that she took Grade 12 English at Riverview Collegiate with festival founder Gary Hyland and recalled him saying he wanted to start a literary festival one day.

“I’m so glad it has done well and continued for all these years,” she continued, while agreeing that the event’s longevity is due to Hyland’s efforts.

“He was very passionate about writing and literature and poetry and all kinds of things created with words,” Mikuliak added.

“It’s definitely a legacy that he left for Moose Jaw and for Saskatchewan.”

A yearly trip to Japan has become the norm for us, especially with two granddaughters there. Patti desired to extend her stay this time to help with the new addition to the family. I was able to exact a promise from her to fill the freezer with lots of prepared meals for me while she prolonged her stay.

Exact, as a verb, means to call for urgently, or forcibly, and obtain it. Reflecting on the German surrender in May 1945 of the end of World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote in 1945 Victory Order of the Day, “From them has been exacted the ultimate sacrifice; blood of many nations—American, British, Canadian, French,

Polish and others—has helped to gain the victory.”

Exact is derived from the Latin word exigere, meaning to drive out or force out. In later Latin exigere implied to demand or require. Revenge and retribution are often exacted by physical force. Promises and concessions can be exacted with persuasion.

Careful that you do not confuse exact with extract.

Extract is about removing something that does not involve a demand. A dentist extracts a tooth from a willing patient.

Confessions are sometimes exacted or extracted depending upon the effort by the one obtaining the confession.

Synonyms for exact can be demand, claim, and require as they ask or call for something as due or as necessary.

Demand suggests insistence, and often the right, to make requests that are to be regarded as commands. Sam demanded the payment of the debt immediately, even though he had been forgiven a much larger debt by his other friend.

Claim implies a mandate for the delivery or concession of something due as one’s own or one’s right.

She tried to make it clear to her parents that she had a claim to manage her own affairs.

Require infers the imperativeness that arises from necessity, compulsion of law, or the exigencies of the situation. After serious surgery patients require constant attention for a few days.

Exact also functions as an adjective meaning exhibiting or marked by strict and complete accordance with fact or a standard. Before awarding the point in the curling end the referee took exact measurements of the rocks.

The past-participle form of the Latin word exigere is exactus, meaning precise. Exactus eventually expanded from a strict measurement to describing things that are completely accurate and true.

Synonyms of exact (the adjective) include correct, nice, and right.

Correct implies freedom from fault or error. When one attends the Royal Ascot races, you must wear the socially correct attire.

Nice stresses great precision and delicacy of discrimination. In the manual it makes nice distinctions between the pressure on tightness on the various blots.

Right has a strong positive emphasis on conformity to fact or truth, rather than mere absence of error fault as in the word correct. He returned the money with a heavy heart, but he knew it was the right thing to do.

Exact can also mean to call for as necessary or desirable. Changing the fitting on the natural gas meter is a task so delicate that it exacts a professional for safety reasons and an inspection later.

The current president of the United States exacts absolute loyalty from cabinet members or they will not last long in their position. I would not have refused to let Patti stay longer in Japan if I had not exacted the promises of freezer food, but it would have been more challenging for me, and I am very relieved that she agreed.

CHARLIE ROY WALLACE SCHULTIES 1943-2026

It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Chuck. He passed away at the Regina General Hospital on July 18, 2026 following a short illness.

He was born in Lawson Saskatchewan and raised in Moose Jaw, one of 16 children.

Chuck is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Carol; stepdaughter, Cathy Dixon; grandchildren Kaytlyn Dixon, and Christopher Dixon (Bozana); great grandchildren, Barry and Violeta of Brantford, Ontario and stepson, Jim Hunchuk (Nikki) of Hussar, Alberta. Chuck is also survived by brother, Doug Schulties; brother-in-law, Dave Newman; sister-in-law, Pat Murphy and brother-in-law, Ed Parker from Calgary. Also left to mourn are numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he liked to tease.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and David Schulties; brothers: Gordon, Walter, Elmer and Ken; sisters: Ruth, Julia, Doris, Martha, Francis, Dorothy, Jenita, Shirley, Donna and Betty.

Chuck worked for Department of National Defence in Chilliwack until he was injured. He and Carol retired back to Moose Jaw in 2001. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed going to the meat draws. He loved watching Roughriders football. He shall be missed by all that knew him.

JUNE WILSON

June Wilson of Moose Jaw passed away peacefully at Lafleche Healthcare Centre on July 23, 2026, at the age of 93. June was born on June 4, 1933, at Indian Head, Saskatchewan. June was a nurse for many years at Moose Jaw Union Hospital and Pioneer Lodge. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping up north, cooking and was darn good at knitting. She spent 45 years plus on Brown Street in Moose Jaw. She is predeceased by her husband Basil, daughter-in-law Karen Wilson, siblings Ronald, Fred, Bill, Connie and Jean. She will be sadly missed by her children Carol (Randy), Jim, and Susan (Ron); grandchildren Melany, Andrew, Kristen, Michael, Amanda, Tiffany; great grandchildren Maxton, Griffin and Willow. MARY FIKOWSKI AUGUST 25, 1927-JULY 12, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Fikowski, at the age of 98 years in Victoria BC. Mary was born in Moose Jaw, SK to Michael and Magdalena Bekar, one of 18 children. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward, and two sons, Larry and Leslie.

Mary was also predeceased by 11 siblings. Left to mourn are her children, son, Dale (Pawana) and daughter, Shelley (Piero); daughter in law Glenda; grandchildren, Grant (Cheryl), Craig (Lori), Kyla(James), Amanda (Matt), Tyler (Shaden), and Sophon (Pop), 11 great grandchildren; siblings, Agnes, Loretha, Don, Hilda, Edwin, and Delores, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Mary and Ed began their lives together on a farm in Boharme, SK and later ventured into the motel business. Many years later they retired in Medicine Hat where they enjoyed many happy days golfing, playing cards, gardening, and spending time with wonderful friends and family. Many more great memories were made with summers at Mara Lake, BC and winters in Phoenix, AZ. After Ed’s passing, Mary moved to Victoria to be closer to family. Mary spent her remaining years at The Summit, a long-term care home, where she received compassionate care and friendship. The family extends their sincere gratitude to all who provided support, care and kindness. Mary will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, wonderful sense of humour, and deep love of her family. She loved to dance, enjoyed a good party, was an exceptional cook, and just loved to go shopping. Her warmth and kindness and zest for life will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

The Memorial Service will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road, SE, Medicine Hat, AB on August 25, 2026, at 11:00 am with Fr. Paolo Cervantes, Celebrant. If unable to attend, family and friends are welcome to participate via livestream by logging on to www.saamis.com and joining the live webcast on Mary’s memorial page at the above date and time. A virtual guest book is available on the livestream page for those participating remotely.
