TOBY KEITH EXPRESSWAY There’s no question that country music legend Toby Keith casts a long shadow across his hometown of Moore, not to mention the entire state of Oklahoma. His presence will be even more prominent once the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority finishes the new Toby Keith Expressway.

At one point, Keith, who died of cancer in February 2024, opposed the project. His name was even added to a lawsuit opposing it. But the past March, his family was on hand for the official announcement of the name, saying that Keith ultimately came to support the project.

Keith’s son, Stelen Covel, said, “We’re very honored as a family to be represented here from the turnpike. We think it’s a lasting legacy piece for our father.”

Tricia Covel, Keith’s wife, said the country singer and his family wrestled with the decision before deciding to support it.

“It’s bittersweet, you know, for our friends and families that were displaced,” Tricia Covel said. “But at the end of the day, we knew the economic value that it was going to have and what it was going to bring to the Moore-Norman area.”

Opposition to the project culminated with two Supreme Court rulings in May 2023. The first, on May 23, 2023, dismissed a “Pike Off OTA” lawsuit. About

one week later the Supreme Court ruled the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) did not violate the Open Meetings Act. Then in August of 2023, the nation’s highest court validated $500 million in bonds for the project. The rulings allowed the $5 billion ACCESS Oklahoma expansion work to proceed.

The project includes widening of existing turnpikes in addition to the new connector loops.

Construction is now underway on the first phase of the project, which will run from Interstate 44 at Newcastle to I-35 at Indian Hills Road. The early work includes the bridge that will carry traffic across the Canadian River between I-44 and I-35.

Ladan Nelson, the ACCESS Program Manager for the OTA, says the bridge will span a ten-mile-wide floodplain.

“That bridge is going to be about 7,000 feet long,” said Nelson. “We are proud to say that it will make it the longest bridge in the state, which will be a huge bonus to the surrounding area.”

Nelson says the connection between I-44 and I-35 is the first-priority segment, and the timeline for completing the first phase is set for the end of 2027. That first phase will provide a “minimum connection.”

“What that means is that the traveling public will be able to utilize one lane of traffic in each direction,” said Nelson.

“And then we’re going to progressively continue construction through 2028. That

means people coming from the Newcastle area will be able to travel a straight shot to the Moore/Norman area. That will continue on until 2028, where we finish up the rest of the turnpike alignment as well as the Western interchange.”

Motorists traveling in those two lanes will have to pay a toll, which will be in line with current toll rates, but those who wish to avoid the toll will have another

option.

Which brings us to the “flyover” interchange that is the cover image of the magazine. That portion of the project includes some significant changes for drivers using I-35 between the coming Indian Hills interchange and 19th Street.

“Anything that is frontage road-related will be free to the public,” said Nelson. "Obviously, that means any frontage roads along the Toby Keith Expressway will always be free to the general public, as well as I-35. Indian Hills Road will ultimately be the east-bound frontage road.”

Nelson points out that Indian Hills Road will not “just disappear” during the I-44 to I-35 phase, but will remain available to drivers and free. The main turnpike will be built first, and the frontage roads will be built in phases immediately after.

part of the first package that goes for I-35,” said Nelson. “That package also includes a minimum connection for the Toby Keith Expressway. It also includes the conversion of the I-35 frontage roads between Indian Hills and 19th from two-way to one-way roads.”

Nelson estimates the 19th Street turnaround bridge, which will allow motorists to avoid the traffic lights in the area, will be available to the public in late 2027 to early 2028.

“There will be points where we have to close Indian Hills or streets near Indian Hills,” said Nelson. “There will be posted detours and the public will be able to get to their locations.

Also, we will put out plenty of advance notice that the closure is coming up so the public is aware of that and can plan for it.”

As for the flyover interchange itself, Nelson says it is a big project, but wants to note that, while it looks big and complex in the project's video rendering, it’s not too different from another metro OKC interchange.

“If you look at State Highway 74, near Portland Avenue, and the John Kilpatrick Turnpike, that’s the same thing we’re going to be doing at I-35 and the Toby Keith Expressway interchange.”

Caring for our Caregivers With the Baby Boomers retiring, we are facing an explosion of senior citizens across the U.S. There will actually be more senior citizens than any other age group, which poses a multitude of challenges. Caregiving roles will also be greatly increased, placing families in difficult situations and requiring hard decisions.

Two of the best ways to support caregivers are through community groups and respite vouchers. Aging Services is one of several organizations that provide these respite services, offering 8 community support groups across the 4 counties we serve: 3 in Cleveland County, 1 in Oklahoma County, and 4 in Canadian County. We call them Coffee & Chat Caregiver Support Groups.

These groups are designed to provide caregivers with time to feel seen, known, loved, and valued. Our respite voucher program offers a unique way for caregivers to take a break so they can attend their own doctor’s appointments, attend a support group, go shopping, enjoy time with friends, and more! We offer these vouchers to caregivers caring for older parents, spouses, or other loved ones. These vouchers are also for our OAC or Older Adults raising children, such as grandparents raising grandkids. These can be used for childcare, music lessons, school sports uniforms, etc.

One of the biggest challenges of caregiving is that caregivers feel they are alone with their problems. Far too often, we see these caregivers not receiving any help from siblings or other family members. They are left to make healthcare and financial decisions and to comb through the vast array of resources available for their loved one.

3. Improves your social skills. Caregiving can be so stressful that people with draw from social situations. Meeting and talking with others who understand this helps practice social skills in a safe space.

4. It will reduce stress. Joining a support group means you are scheduling a ded icated and recurring amount of time to better yourself. It is only natural for you to feel less stress and discomfort as you begin to work through your issues and help others work through their issues their own.

5. Keeps you motivated, hopeful, and empowered. Hearing the stories of oth ers about where they once were and seeing how far they have come will con tinuously motivate you to do the same.

It can be stressful when thinking about attending your first support group meeting.

You might not know what to expect or how to act. It is important to go into this with a positive mindset. This might be obvious, but it is the most important step. Just go! You will never be pressured to speak up or share anything beyond what you are comfortable with. And just as others will respect your confidentiality, so will you, because it is important to respect the privacy of your group members.

Support groups are a powerful source for lasting change, but only when you immerse yourself in the experience. It is important to maintain regular attendance. Participate as much as possible. Offer up thoughts, opinions, and stories on everything talked about.Remember, everyone else in the group is there for the same reason you are.

Joining a caregiver support group is a great way to cope with whatever issues you are dealing with.

1. Helps you realize that you are not alone. People are often surprised when they attend a support group and realize that there are a ton of other people who understand exactly what they are going through.

2. Helps increase self-understanding. Support groups help you learn more about yourself. Through sharing stories and experiences, you can develop coping mechanisms that help you handle difficult situations.

OSU Extension Offers Tools for Beginning Gardeners

Nearly everything a person buys comes with an instruction manual. There are directions on how to put it together, how to operate it and maybe even some safety guidelines.

For Oklahomans who have been hesitant to try gardening because they don’t know how, think of Oklahoma State University Extension as a gardening instruction manual. There are literally hundreds of informational resources available to give novice gardeners step-by-step instructions to growing flowers, fruits and vegetables, trees, grass and more. Plus, the friendly folks at all 77 OSU Extension county offices are more than happy to answer questions and offer advice.

people who want to learn about gardening can gain a lot of knowledge by watching the show.

One of the newest gardening tools is a free app developed

by OSU Extension called Plant-It-OK. Available for iOS and Android devices, the app can help novice gardeners make wise plant choices to increase the likelihood of success, said David Hillock, OSU Extension consumer horticulturist.

“No matter what you want to grow, you’ll find information on it on our website, social media platforms and YouTube channels,” Hentges said. “Gardening is the top leisure activity, and OSU Extension offers various ways to help develop gardening skills.”

“The app currently focuses on landscape plants, with a robust list of about 275 plants, including native plants and others adapted to Oklahoma’s diverse climate,” he said. “Plant-It-OK is ideal for homeowners, gardeners and landscapers.”

Even the most seasoned poker player sometimes needs an ace in the hole, and the Plant-It-OK app helps gardeners get a winning hand. With recommendations for trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental and turf grasses, ground covers, vines and annuals, the app comes in clutch for making informed gardening decisions.

The app also includes links to hundreds of OSU Extension fact sheets offering research-based information on a wide range of gardening topics. One of the most popular fact sheets is the Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide. It’s chockfull of valuable information about site selection, planning and tips. Another popular fact sheet is the Landscape Maintenance Schedule.

For more than half a century, “Oklahoma Gardening” has aired on OETA, providing audiences with an intimate look at gardening – from how-to segments and landscape design, to pest control and growing and cooking homegrown vegetables.

Casey Hentges, host of “Oklahoma Gardening,” said

“The show offers something for gardeners of all levels,” she said.

“We have new shows that air every Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., plus we encourage gardeners to subscribe to the ‘Oklahoma Gardening’ and ‘Oklahoma Gardening’ Classics YouTube channels to find topics geared toward specific interests. We also offer great gardening information on Facebook and Instagram.”

Beginning gardeners may find this segment on five easy vegetables to grow full of useful information to help make gardening efforts successful.

Anyone interested in growing vegetables can also check out OSU Extension’s first self-paced online Vegetable Gardening course.

The course consists of 12 30-minute modules designed to give gardeners a deeper understanding of vegetable gardening. Taught

by Brenda Sanders, module topics include assessing the garden, choosing the garden site, soil basics, crops and garden planning, garden layout, soil preparation and equipment, planting the garden, tending the garden, fall gardening and season extension, pest management, production tips and harvest hints, and resources.

There is a $50 registration fee for the Vegetable Gardening online course. It’s easy to set up an account to register.

One more ace in the hole to help new gardeners is Oklahoma Proven, a plant evaluation program developed at OSU in 1999.

Each year, researchers choose an annual, a perennial, a shrub and a tree that have proven to grow well in Oklahoma’s diverse climate.

All of the plant profiles from each year are available on the Oklahoma Proven website.

This is a great tool for beginning gardeners who aren’t familiar with what plants grow well in Oklahoma. Growing plants that are well-adapted to this area can lead to greater gardening success.

“I encourage all gardeners, especially beginning gardeners, to use these various resources, and especially their OSU Extension county office,” Hillock said. “Check to see if there’s a local Master Gardeners program in the county. Our Master Gardeners are a wealth of information and are always eager to share their expertise.”

Gina Bertoletti Gina Bertoletti is Moore Norman Technology Center’s Business Coach. August marks her 21st year with MNTC. Bertoletti has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Technology from Rogers State University and a Master’s in Administrative Leadership from the University of Oklahoma. Her passion for business came naturally as she comes from a family of entrepreneurs. Her grandfather, born in 1911, started his own business even though he didn’t speak much English. She says she learned the “best of what she knows” from watching him and seeing how he took care of his people.

Planning ahead for the 3rd and 4th quarter of life can be confusing and very “sales-driven.” These ingredients create a recipe for vulnerability within the senior community. The mission of this program is to provide education and resources to help seniors look to the future. Seniors, their families, and caretakers alike can make informed decisions with confidence. One important thing to mention: NO SALES PITCHES ARE ALLOWED. This program uses a panel of experts to cover a wide range of topics and provide resources. Becky and Roberto Seda are experts in their fields.

Becky is a top real estate professional in OKC and Roberto is an experienced Probate and estate planning attorney.

Helping seniors address the challenges they face seems like a new area of interest for MNTC. What has prompted your interest in helping seniors tackle those challenges?

Moore Norman has been around since 1972 and we have provided senior-focused training throughout the years, especially in the areas of technology during the early days of the internet and more recently with Smartphones, digital photography, etc. For over 50 years our community has supported our mission of education MNTC is delighted to reciprocate that generosity and support our community with attention to the growing senior population. We are a full service organization providing education for the young and mature alike. We will continue to ask the question, “How else can we serve our senior population?”

What are some of the biggest issues seniors face these days?

Financial and housing insecurity come into play as seniors are living longer.

(What if you outlive your money or need to •

move to an assisted living center? If I age in my home, what do I need to consider? If I have to move, what do I do with all my stuff? Is it worth it to move near my children, or do I have other options?)

• Healthcare access. The world is experiencing workforce shortages in the health care industry, especially in geriatrics. (What is the difference between in-home health care and hospice? What does Medicare pay for, and what expenses will I need to be prepared for? What if I am unable to make decisions for myself, and what should I consider as I build a health care team around me?)

What kinds of practical information and/or resources will participants take with them from the sessions?

Each event has a different focus. In June, one session will focus on “Letting Go of Stuff,” with an emphasis on planning, simplifying, and preparing to move forward. Also in June, the focus will be on “Having Enough” with information on ways to pay for senior living. Additional topics will be covered in monthly sessions from August to November. They are listed on the MNTC website when you search “Senior Living Truth Series”. The event has a generous number of Education Partners who attend and bring new materials each month for participants to take home. The materials reflect the seminar's topic. If the attendee wants more information, they can pick up the material and call the vendor. Again, there is a strict no solicitation policy. Each seminar is about 60 minutes, followed by a 30-minute Q&A. We begin promptly at 10:00 am and finish at 11:30 am. Seniors, caretakers, and family members are welcome to attend.

Kirkegard’s Reasons for Firefighting Career Runs Deep Chris Kirkegard says growing up in Minco, he experienced a pretty typical life. Like most Oklahoma kids, he was heavily involved in sports, especially enjoying the close ties and camaraderie of teammates. That’s just one of the things that fed his interest in becoming a firefighter.

“I've been here ten years, and I love it,” said Kirkegard. “Best decision I ever made was to switch. And it's not huge, so you still know all the guys, you know their names, and a little bit about them. You’re more of a name and not a number here in Moore.”

Author: Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud Reviewer: Becky Feldman Standridge, Children’s Library Associate, Moore Public Library This is a terrific school-based graphic novel about a group of middle schoolers who form a cartoonist club and learn the art of comics, graphic novels, and creation. Makayla and Howard are friends who exchange drawings and story ideas, much to the dismay of their algebra teacher, who has become the main character in one of their budding stories. The duo heads to the school library to flesh out their ideas, where Ms. Fatima, the librarian, leads them to form a club of like-minded, story creators that includes Makayla, Howard, a shy and quiet Lynda, and outgoing Art, who just likes to create with a variety of media.

Cartoonist Club is a love letter to comics, art, storytelling, and friendship. Readers who would like to hone their storytelling and illustrating skills will find it very helpful. Raina Telgemeier working with Scott McCloud is sheer genius!

Kids ages 8-10 will enjoy and be artistically inspired by this brilliant, heartwarming graphic novel! This book is AR level 2.9 and worth 1 AR point. You can find The Cartoonists Club at the Moore Public Library children’s department.

Leader in Me Initiative Hits the Bullseye for Northmoor Archery Team Northmoor Elementary’s archery program is proving that leadership can be just as important as accuracy on the range.

form,” said Fowlkes. “They also don’t get rattled, and the sport teaches them how to work through adversity.”

After 20 years of coaching archery, Coach Fowlkes recently embraced a new approach inspired by the district’s Leader in Me initiative. The program encourages students to develop leadership skills and support their peers' growth.

“Kids want to be challenged,” said Fowlkes. “Setting the bar high is something they really enjoy. Each year, when the kids come out and try out for the archery team, they look for that challenge.”

Their leadership extended beyond coaching. ALT members also helped maintain the team’s equipment by teaching teammates how to repair and recover targets. Tasks that once took the coach several hours can now be completed in about 30 minutes when the team works together. The student leaders also assisted with inspecting and waxing bows as needed.

The leadership program helped contribute to another successful season for the Northmoor archery team. The school finished as the State Runner-Up in the 2025–2026 season.

Northmoor also produced the Overall Elementary Girls State Champion, Emery Anderson, and the Overall Elementary Boys State Champion, Liam Barnett. In addition, sixth-grade archers Natalee Schwab and Niko Logan captured the Tier 2 Central Middle School State Girl and Boy titles.

This season, Fowlkes introduced the concept to the Northmoor All-Star Archery Team by forming an Archery Leadership Team (ALT). Six sixth-grade students volunteered to take on leadership roles, helping instruct and mentor the younger archers on the team.

The six students selected for the ALT were members of Northmoor’s 2025 State Championship team. Their experience and communication skills made them ideal mentors. Throughout the season, the student leaders often gave up part — and sometimes all — of their own practice time to help younger teammates improve their technique.

For Fowlkes, the results go beyond trophies and titles. It’s an important way for students to embrace a more analog approach to life in a world where everything is increasingly digital.

“Kids are bombarded with cell phones,” said Fowlkes. “Archery is a big break from that. The whole philosophy is that when you give a kid a bow, there are no flashing screens or loud music. It’s not like any other sport they will ever encounter.”
