PROP RECO

PROTECTING TRAILS, PREVENTING CLOSURES, AND PRESERVING THE OFF-ROAD COMMUNITY

Off-roading is more than a hobby; it’s a lifestyle that brings adventure, connection, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors As enthusiasts, we share a responsibility to protect the trails we love to explore. Unfortunately, improper vehicle recoveries can cause unnecessary trail damage, leading to erosion, environmental degradation, and even trail closures. By understanding and practicing proper recovery techniques, we can preserve our trails for future generations and ensure the sustainability of our off-road community

We strongly encourage off-road enthusiasts to seek training from certified professionals, such as trainers certified by the International 4-Wheel Drive Trainers Association (i4WDTA.) Certification ensures trainers meet high standards of expertise and safety, providing you with the skills and confidence to handle challenging recovery scenarios

USE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

THE IMPACT OF IMPROPER VEHICLE RECOVERIES

Improper recoveries whether due to a lack of training, improper use of equipment, or simply cutting corners can have far-reaching consequences Yanking a stuck vehicle out of deep mud without the right tools, for example, can create ruts that accelerate erosion, destabilize the trail, and harm surrounding ecosystems These damages may lead land managers to restrict access or permanently close trails, impacting the entire offroad community.

TRAINING: A FOUNDATION FOR RESPONSIBLE OFF-ROADING

Proper training is the cornerstone of responsible vehicle recoveries Training not only equips offroaders with the skills to recover safely but also emphasizes techniques that minimize damage to the environment At Switchback Outdoor Safety, we emphasize recovery strategies that consider the terrain, vehicle weight, and environmental impact, ensuring every recovery is effective and responsible.

Equipment is just as important as training Using rated, high-quality recovery gear is essential for safe and effective vehicle recoveries. Cutting corners with substandard or mismatched equipment can compromise safety and increase the risk of trail damage.

At Switchback Outdoor Safety, we are proud to offer American-made, rated recovery equipment that you can trust in the field Partnering with reputable brands like Safe Xtract, we provide tools designed to withstand the rigors of off-road recoveries while supporting local industries Investing in quality equipment not only enhances safety but also promotes the sustainability of the off-road community by supporting American manufacturers

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Each of us has a role to play in preserving the trails we love. Here’s how you can contribute:

• Seek Training: Enroll in a recovery training course with certified instructors, such as those at Switchback Outdoor Safety.

• Invest in Quality Gear: Use rated, American-made equipment to ensure safe and effective recoveries

• Practice Responsible Recovery Techniques:Assess the situation, use the right tools, and prioritize the trail’s integrity.

• Educate Others: Share your knowledge with fellow off-roaders and encourage them to prioritize responsible practices.

CONCLUSION

Trail closures don’t just happen they’re the result of cumulative impacts over time By conducting proper vehicle recoveries, we can reduce trail damage, prevent closures, and preserve the off-road experience for generations to come Whether you’re a seasoned off-roader or new to the sport, training, equipment, and responsibility are key

At Switchback Outdoor Safety, we’re committed to empowering the off-road community with the knowledge and tools to tread lightly and recover safely. Let’s work together to protect the trails that fuel our adventures

AN OVERLANDER’S TOOL KIT

As overlanders, we take upon ourselves the responsibilities associated withselfrelianttravelandtraversing the roads less traveled. While we would all love it if our gear was infallible, the reality is that all things break eventually. Most of the time, that’s inconvenient, but acceptable. A quick fix and we can limp the vehicle to the mechanic. Worst case, we call for a tow truck. But for the brave souls who make the unknown their daily fare, a bigger fix might be necessary because it’s too far to limp it to the mechanic in its current state. This means making a tool kit that is going to help us get there.

“BEFORE WE START FRANTICALLY SWIPING OUR CREDIT CARDS ...LET’S ASK WHAT WE ARE REALLY ATTEMPTING TO ACCOMPLISH.”

DECIDING THE SCOPE OF YOUR TOOL KIT

QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED

It's pretty easy to go down the rabbit hole for tools that we think we should have And whatever your favorite brand of tool, there are sets that can reach into the thousands of dollars But before we start frantically swiping our credit cards and melting them down into molten slag, let’s ask what we are really attempting to accomplish.

QUICK FIX VS REPAIR: WHAT DO I NEED?

It’s important to look at the scope of the expedition and your travels in general. If it's multiple days in the backcountry with few ‘bail out points’ for a full repair, the scope of the quick fix might approach a full-on repair of some type that must hold up to miles and terrain At this point, a tool kit goes beyond tools and into anticipated replacement parts.

AM I OUTFITTING A GROUP OR JUST ME?

In every overlanding group there is the Guy That Fixes All The Stuff. Probably more than one, but there is at least that person. Chances are, this person probably already has a kit in his rig worthy of a full time mechanic’s bay. If you’re that guy, you undoubtedly have stuff to work on many makes/models and have learned what common tools are needed and what you might need to bring for that one oddball brand you might have to deal with. Your kit allows you to bring serviceability to an array of vehicles (And, we appreciate you!!!!)

Do I only need the tools for my vehicle for my stuff? If so, can a smaller kit work for me with some decent essentials? If so, what should those be?

WHAT AM I SERVICING?

A similar question to the above questions, is to ask what you might need to work on It isn’t just your vehicle. Fasteners for rooftop tents, trailers, bed racks, etc need to be considered. Luckily, most of the overlanding manufacturing community uses common size fasteners for their designs. Your toolkit might be smaller for your needs than the Guy That Fixes All The Stuff. Also consider what the necessities vs. the luxuries and conveniences are

CAN I USE WHAT I HAVE?

This really depends on you, what your preferences are, and what you can afford Some people prefer to have their overlanding kit be a standalone system, while some people are happy to transfer things from their garage toolbox into a carry-along. Only you can answer this for you I can only suggest having a list, and check it when you go out to ensure it’s complete.

WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?

This is where you can start to save money and headache all at the same time. Understanding your equipment needs as far as tools go is important There are tool kits out there for mechanics that are so complete that the sum of the tools represented would be a hundred pounds. Do you really need a socket set with 1/32nds increment sockets when 1/16th increment will do what you need? What is the range of sockets and wrench sizes you need? Also, what are some specialty items you might need?

START WITH SOME BASICS

Luckily, there are some standard kit assortments out there that contain the most common tools used Here are some hand tools that comprise a common, reasonably well equipped tool set and items to support vehicle based travel.

Tire iron and lug wrench.

Lug nut adapter (for wheels with nonstandard lug nuts).

Tire repair kit

Consider bringing an impact wrench and battery charger for it

“PRO TIP! GET IMPACT SOCKETS FOR ALL THE ½ DEEP WELL SOCKETS. THEY’RE STRONGER, AND YOU’LL PROBABLY EVENTUALLY BE GETTING AN IMPACT WRENCH ANYWAYS.”

ROUNDING OUT YOUR KIT

A bit up in the article there was a question “What does that entail?” It was not only meant to keep the scope of your tool kit as narrow as possible (to save cost), but also to ensure you have everything you need (to maintain effectiveness.) If your vehicle has aftermarket parts, are there uncommon sizes used in the design?

Robustness is a big part of what makes great gear as great as it is. Sometimes that’s over engineered parts using over engineered fasteners Read up on all the aftermarket things you’ve installed and ensure your tool kit supports them If need be, crawl under the rig and see for yourself. This can mean lift kit suspensions, trailer items, trailer couplings, bed racks, and all the equipment you have added to the vehicle.

Also keep in mind you don’t necessarily need to be able to quick-fix everything on your set-up Really consider what the essential performances are (engine, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, electrical controls) and what the necessities are (fridge, heater, etc) to support yourselves and others.

So yeah, this is a lot of stuff. But if you’re the average homeowner, you probably have a good bit of this somewhere. Decide if you want a stand-alone vehicle kit or have your home kit do double-duty while you’re on the road. Between balancing this and the necessities, you can create a comprehensive kit that gets the anticipated jobs done, all within a budget you can achieve

CONFESSIONS OF A RALLY CO-DRIVER

Marketer,4WDInstructor,Driver,Co-Driver

Imagine hurtling down a narrow forest road at eighty miles per hour, trees whizzingbyinchesfromyourdoor, your

voice steady but urgent as you call out precise instructions to your driver: “Left four into right three, crest jump, caution, tightens two, flat out 200.” Now, picture yourself finding the perfect speed to float over miles of 300 ft tall sand dunes with nothing but a paper map, compass, and rulers Welcome to the thrilling life of a multi-category rally co-driver part navigator, part strategist, and part fearless partner, who sees the road not through the windshield, but through a notebook filled with intricate shorthand pace notes, or topographic mapsandroadbooks.

In stage rallying, a co-driver’s job is as exhilarating as it is critical Your driver depends on your every word You’re the eyes and ears, reading detailed pace notes you’ve meticulously prepared during reconnaissance Each note describes the upcoming corner, jump, crest, or hazard, translating the unpredictable into a precisely choreographeddanceatbreakneckspeeds

Confession: In my first stage rally, Overmountain Rally TN, I was terrified when we took off from the first start line, my heart was pounding out of my chest There were times where I’d look up from my pace notes, see a tree coming right at me, and gasp, taken by surprise by the verynarrowmountainroads.

THE ART OF CO-DRIVING

Legends like Rhianon and Alex Gelsomino have elevated co-driving to an art form Rhianon, alongside Travis Pastrana, and Alex, who famously co-drove with the late Ken Block, have shown the world what seamless teamwork under extreme pressure looks like They embody the co-driver’s role calm, collected, and unshakeable even when the car slides sideways around a blind bend or leaps airborne over a crest. Their careers prove that co-drivers aren’t merely passengers; they’re integral to every victory, every stage conquered, every legendmade

Confession: The first time I met Rhianon, it didn’t compute who she was, I blame the excellent wine! We talkedaboutlife, family, ourjourneys, rally, andsheinvited me to take her co-driver class that she and her husband Alex offer, OZ Rally Pro Advanced Rally Training After that class out in Snoqualmie, WA at DirtFish, I was hooked RuinedasItendtosay

Inside the cockpit during an American Rally Association (ARA) event, such as the iconic Olympus Rally or the grueling Oregon Trail Rally, the noise is deafening. Engines roar, gravel pelts the car, and your pulse races Your world narrows down to a single focus: your notes. Your timing is everything Call a corner too early or too late, and seconds or worse, safety is compromised. It’s a thrilling balance of precision, bravery, and trust that makesstagerallyinguniquelyelectrifying.

“AFTER THAT CLASS ... AT DIRTFISH, I WAS HOOKED. RUINED AS I TEND TO SAY.”

With only maps, compasses, and Dakar-style roadbooks no GPS or digital tools allowed you navigate more than 2,500 kilometers across the deserts and mountains of Nevada andCalifornia.

Confession: The first year I competed in the Rally, I was feeling so good going into it, but by day three, I was SO LOST Lisa and I prepared, but couldn’t do any of the in person training, and oh how we wished we would have when we were standing in the middle of nowhere lost as f**k.

As a Rebelle co-driver, your day begins long before sunrise, plotting checkpoints meticulously onto maps illuminated by headlamps, planning routes that will take you through challenging terrain to hidden locations. Each morning is a new puzzle, each stage a carefully plotted course where accuracy means everything. Miscalculationsbymeremeterscancostvaluablepoints

During timed enduro stages and Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) sections reminiscent of the famed Dakar Rally, precision is paramount You’re constantly checking speed averages, making minor course corrections, and calling out exact distances and directions, all while trying to navigate off-road courses that may or may not look like trails The challenge here isn’t about how fast you can drive, but how accurately you navigate, testing your mentalresilienceasmuchasyourphysicalendurance

DOUBT TO DETERMINATION

CompetingintheRebelleRallymeansnavigatingnotonly rugged terrain but also your own internal doubts It’s about embracing uncertainty, relying on your skills, and trusting your teammate Nights are spent under vast, star-filled skies, analyzing the day’s challenges around campfires with fellow competitors who’ve become lifelong friends. The camaraderie built from shared hardshipsandtriumphsisunforgettable

Confession: I stood in the shower and cried for what felt like hours after our first Rebelle Rally I was so raw, so exhausted, and so disappointed about how it went. Once I was able to rest, shower, and get home, that’s when the disappointment turned to drive, it turned into determination

“COMPETING IN THE REBELLE RALLY MEANS NAVIGATING NOT ONLY RUGGED TERRAIN BUT ALSO YOUR OWN INTERNAL DOUBTS.”

Whether hurtling through forests at breathtaking speeds in stage rallies or precisely navigating remote deserts in the Rebelle, the role of the co-driver offers unparalleled thrills It demands focus, courage, and skill but above all, itcreatesbondsandmemoriesthatlastalifetime.

So, if you’ve ever wondered about the exhilaration of calling out corners at eighty miles per hour or charting your path across unmarked desert sands, consider stepping into the co-driver’s seat. Adventure awaits, and trustme there’snothingquitelikeit

IN SEARCH OF HIDDEN GEMS ON TWO WHEELS

I am the founder of the Minnesota Adventure Trails This project was inspired by my lifelong passion for exploration and the outdoors I grew up just outside Rochester, MN, and spent much of my childhood riding dirtbikes and ATVs through the rugged landscapes of the Driftless Region. During the pandemic, with Minnesota in lockdown, I had extra time on my hands, so I set out to explore the backroads of my home state, recording my journeys with a handheld Garmin GPS In 2023, after years of recording and mapping, I was able to release the Southeastern MN ADV Trail (SEMAT), and the response was amazing. To my surprise, the trail took off and that led to launching two more trails the Northeastern MN ADV Trail (NEMAT) and the NorthCentral MN ADV Trail (NCMAT) Each trail is a reflection of my love for the state’s hidden gems, and I’m excited to share these adventures with others who enjoy exploring the great outdoors.

About the Northeastern MN Adv Trail (NEMAT) The NEMAT is a 1000 mile off-road adventure through the most beautiful areas of northern Minnesota The route consists of gravel, forest roads, 2 track and rural pavement The main goal of the route is to showcase the beauty of Minnesota when you get off the main highways and off into the remote wilderness The GPX file has points of interest, gas, food, and campground all saved as waypoints so that you don’t miss anything important. The route can be completed in any Highway legal 4wd vehicle or any street legal adventure/dual sport bike Nothing is needed to complete the route other than a license plate, but we recommend a state park pass to take advantage of the many you’ll pass along the journey. So far the route has had a very positive effect on the small towns and remote business along the way. ALASKA PERSPECTIVES

Is an epic trip to the Last Frontier on your list? We got you! Here are inspiringstoriesfromafewexplorers

who have been there to help if you are looking to make the trek to our wonderful 49th state, Alaska.

BILL & DEB REED @CODDIWOMPLE OVERLAND

Alaska, often referred to as "The Last Frontier," is a land of breathtaking beauty and untamed wilderness. Last year, we embarked on an incredible adventure, flying up to this majestic state and exploring it in a rugged Toyota 4Runner rented from Alaska Overlander Rentals Over the course of nine exhilarating days, we traversed more than 1800 miles, immersing ourselves in the diverse landscapes and rich culture that Alaska has to offer.

All our nights were spent camping under the stars in our expertly equipped overlanding rig, while our days were filled with thrilling explorations of places like Whittier, Valdez, McCarthy, Denali, Talkeetna, and Homer. Some of the highlights included taking a ferry from Whittier to Valdez, exploring the historic Kennicott mine, witnessing the awe-inspiring peak of Mount McKinley, spending time with sled dogs, and walking along the serene beach at Anchor Point.

Our journey through Alaska was an unforgettable experience, filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, incredible wildlife, and rich cultural encounters The flexibility and freedom provided by our rental vehicle allowed us to explore the state at our own pace, uncovering hidden gems and creating lasting memories along the way Alaska truly is "The Last Frontier," and we feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore it in such a unique and immersive way.

“...AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE, FILLED WITH AWE-INSPIRING LANDSCAPES, INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE, AND RICH CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS. “

ASHLEY & SCOTT HRNCIRIK @ADVENTUREFURTHER

Being in Alaska is a once in a lifetime experience that offers stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife However this wonderland has rough edges and ‘thorns’ as you can find yourself in a rugged environment and unpredictable weather that can quickly turn into a survival situation very quickly

Here are some tips to choose the best season for traveling.

Summer- June through August is best for warm weather but is the busiest and full of mosquitoes. Fall- September and October have fewer crowds and no mosquitoes but much colder temperatures.

Winter- November Through March- Ideal for experienced campers with correct gear.

Spring- April And May are still cold in many areas with lots of snow and wildlife starts to become more active

Overlanding in Alaska is an adventure like no other! Being prepared for anything nature or life will throw at you will not only ensure your safety of you and your traveling partners but will ensure you have the best experience The Last Frontier has to offer!

“OVERLANDING IN ALASKA IS AN ADVENTURE LIKE NO OTHER! BEING PREPARED FOR ANYTHING... WILL ENSURE YOUR SAFETY”
THE EXPEDITION OF A LIFETIME

So you want to go to Alaska? Get ready for the trip of a lifetime! There’s a lot you will need to prepare for this expedition and it all depends on what you want to do and when you go There are pros and cons to everything and the expenses can be minimal or they can add up very quickly There are a few different ways to visit Alaska: driving, flying, or a cruise. We opted for driving because we’re overlanders of course! The drive is LONG, Be prepared for that.

We drove up the coastal way on Dease Lake Highway through Canada to Alaska and drove down inland on the Alaska Highway On the way up, it took us 4 days to drive through Canada. We took advantage of the long daylight hours and did about 16 hours of driving each day. Don’t worry about looking for campsites though, campsites in Alaska are aplenty! We used iOverlander to find most of our campsites and others were word of mouth Almost every campsite in Alaska was EPIC. There are many places to stay by beautiful glacial water and with views of snow capped mountains... the deeper you go the more secluded you’ll be There’s so much to explore, you’ll definitely want to get lost (but not too lost that no one can find you)Remember to carry extra gas!

If you’re planning to visit the 8 National Parks in Alaska: Denali, Gates of the Arctic, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Kenai Fjords, Kobuk Valley, Lake Clark, and Wrangell St Elias Be prepared to plan at least a month in advance to book flights or ferries as 5 of the 8 parks are not accessible by car We went in the summer for access to the parks and the 22 hours of daylight, which allowed us to “do more” Unfortunately, the downside was we weren’t able to see the northern lights which are only visible in the winter. That just means we’ll have to go back!

“THE ENTIRE STATE IS AN EPIC OVERLANDING TRIP. BE SURE TO EXPERIENCE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.”

Have your camera ready all of the time. Moose, bears, porcupines, and sea planes can jump out at any time, anywhere. There are so many opportunities for photographers it just never stops From season changing landscapes to the unique festivals scattered all over the state, Fourth of July car launch Which might have ended last year, call your senator today because if so this wrong must be righted!

Don’t just come in the summer Come up and winter camp. The northern lights will more than make up for the cold Beside diesel heaters are amazing Winter creates a different Alaska experience. Snow wheeling, prime skiing, ice fishing, dog sledding, snow machining, and crazy ice car races are just a few of the many things winter Alaska offers.

The entire state is an epic overlanding trip. Be sure to experience as much as possible Take a plane ride, rent a side by side, get a fishing guide, ride your bike, and most of all get out and hike There are so many hiking trails to places you cannot get to in your rig, don’t miss out!

“ALMOST EVERY CAMPSITE IN ALASKA WAS EPIC. THERE ARE MANY PLACES TO STAY BY BEAUTIFUL GLACIAL WATER AND WITH VIEWS OF SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAINS.”

MANDY BUEHLER @AMBUEHLER

Hey, I’m Mandy Buehler! Last year on the 2nd half of my West trip, I took the Sea to Sky from Vancouver, then the Cassiar Hwy up to Alaska (and the Alcan back) in my 2015 Tacoma My “house” is a minimally built, walk-in door, truck cap. I also have a rack-n-ride carrier for my dualsport, which was one of the best things I could have brought on my trip, as I could leave my setup and ride into town on the trails without having to break down camp and take the truck

Some faves were the Chena River outside Fairbanks, Healy, Hatcher Pass, and the Kenai Peninsula. I scuba dived Whittier Bay, fished coho in the Kenai River, rode my Honda on Agate Beach in Nikiski, and got a tattoo on the spit in Homer

If I have any advice, it would be to either have a heat source and shelter, or go in July/August when it is warmer and dryer I found myself battling the rain and cold in September. I would also say, don’t be too tough to book a little cabin for some of your trip! The coziness of my log cabin in Soldotna was one of the most memorable parts of a 6 month journey, and I can’t wait to go back! Also, if you at all have the option to drive vs. fly, do it. Northern British Columbia and the Yukon are just as incredible as Alaska!

“...DON’T BE TOO TOUGH TO BOOK A LITTLE CABIN FOR SOME OF YOUR TRIP!”

GOURMET ON THE GO

Hey folks, Jeremiah here, and we are still smiling from our Lake Superior Circle Tour this past fall (shameless plug, watch our YouTube video for all the majesty and splendor!) Everyone loves a good, gourmet meal at camp In our Ten or Less series we show you how to make amazing camp meals using just 10 ingredients or less because who wants to haul the whole kitchen to camp?

On the menu? A killer camp meal that feels gourmet but keeps it simple: Brussels and Taters with Bacon, Goat Cheese, and a Homemade Balsamic Glaze It’s got everything you want crispy bacon, creamy goat cheese, charred Brussels, and crispy potatoes all coated in a rich, homemade balsamic glaze. Simple, hearty, and packed with flavor

We started off by making the balsamic glaze, reducing it down into a thick, tangy goodness. Then, we got that bacon sizzling because everything’s better cooked in bacon grease, right? Once that was crispy, we threw in the Brussels and taters, letting them soak up all that flavor while getting that perfect char. A little salt, a little pepper, and boom we were ready to plate.

To finish it off, we piled on some goat cheese, drizzled over the glaze, and topped it all with crispy bacon And for those feeling adventurous, we tried it with wild blueberry lemon thyme goat cheese and let me tell you, that was next-level.

This one’s a must-try for your next camping trip. Just remember: enjoy where you eat and make the most of your time outdoors. Cheers!

TRAVEL FAMILY STYLE

“OUR TRAVEL IS FULLY BASED AROUND THE NEEDS OF OUR FAMILY.”

We are the Middaughs! You may know us as the founders and owners of the outdoor lifestyle brand Becker Supply. That, or recognize our adorable twin toddlers, Max and Lenny, often found zipping around on their balance bikes and splashing in muddy puddles We are a family of six full-time adventure travelers. Oh yes, we’ve also brought our two crazy blue heelers along for the adventure! We started traveling pretty seriously in 2023 after closing our retail store in Indiana. In 2024, we finally sold our house and set off for full time travel

HITTING THE ROAD

The decision of uprooting our family and hitting the road was a profound one. The weight of this stepping off point was not lost on us or the girls Luckily for us, we were already prepared for many of the traveling aspects from our previous business experience traveling to expos. Thankfully, our deep love of nature, new experiences and our community on the road far outweighs these challenges. Getting lost on the trails with no cell service, hitting pump tracks with our girls in cities across the country, and meeting up with likeminded folks at expos are just some of the ways we find meaning and purpose in our travels Above all, slowing life down enough in a world filled with screens and social media competitions to spend time outdoors breathes a sense of simplicity into our lives, where family can ultimately be our focus

We consider ourselves overlanders, but we do not let that shape our entire method of travel (especially with two little ones) You may find us boondocking, at a campground, an airBNB or hotel, or especially anywhere with friends and family Our travel is fully based around the needs of our family. Don’t get me wrong, we prefer to be in nature where no one can send us an email, but sometimes our kids want a good playground, or we want a washer, dryer, and bathtub at our convenience for a week. Modern amenities by far don’t define our existence as overlanders, but boy are they nice

PRIORITIZING WORK-LIFE BALANCE AND SAFETY

We are still very much working on perfecting a little something we like to call “work-life- balance,” ever heard of it? Our balance looks a little different than other families, but like most, we are figuring out how to work, travel and spend quality time as a family. When deciding which new places to see or which shows to participate in we navigate creating comfortable spaces for our girls and dogs However; at the end of the day we can’t control everything, and are forced to adapt on the fly. Last year we traveled from Indiana to Virginia, over to Arkansas, all the way to Colorado, and back again to Indiana, all within a month As if that wasn’t stressful enough, one of the expos we attended was suddenly struck by a tornado! To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement, but finding comfortability and safety for our family is always a priority We certainly hope Mother Nature will cut us some slack moving forward but a lesson in traveling full time is slowing down enough to experience the reasons we chose this lifestyle.

CREATING COMFORTABLE SPACES FOR EVERYONE

The Rig? We’re glad you asked :) We travel with our family out of our 2020 Toyota Tacoma outfitted with a badass tray and canopy built by New Holland Overland The canopy was crafted specifically for our family, with the inclusion of built-in dog crates (custom dog tags included) for our pups Aspen and Riley. In their crates, they can comfortably have their own space for days on the road, and also be off the ground at camp for resting and sleeping. Getting the dogs out of the cabin lends itself to more comfortable travel days for everyone and a little less cleaning for Mom. The canopy allows us to set up a basecamp and take off with just the truck for the weekend, fully set for off-roading adventures. That said, most of the time you will see us pulling and living out of our Hiker Trailer. Our set-up has bunk beds for the girls and a queen sized bed for Mom and Dad, so we’ve all got our own space to comfortably sleep. We have been traveling and living out of it since October 2023, so we have had time to craft a rather comfortable setup for our family For me, it’s in the small details The little things that make each day simpler, like my outdoor kitchen setup with everything I need within arms reach. Max’s favorite thing about our rig is that it’s “Big, big and bigger We drive with it in our big truck with new wheels.” and Lenny loves to “sleep in my bottom bunk with my 10 little kids.” Jake’s favorite part “we can all cozy up inside for movie night or games”

“FOR ME, IT’S IN THE SMALL DETAILS. THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE EACH DAY SIMPLER, LIKE MY OUTDOOR KITCHEN SETUP WITH EVERYTHING I NEED WITHIN ARMS REACH.”

ROLES FOR SETUP AND TEARDOWN AT CAMP

One aspect that eases us through all of these transitions is that everyone knows their roles for setup and teardown We can get to camp and get everything we need set up in no time. We might be open to a challenge on how quickly and quietly we can pack up and leave camp, but thankfully we’re all quite good at our roles by now, even Aspen and Riley!

This year we have a first experience we are REALLY EXCITED ABOUT! We are heading off on our first group expedition to Newfoundland with 5 other rigs This trip is meaningful for our family because Jake proposed to me in Newfoundland in 2019 when we traveled there to spectate some ECHL hockey games (another non-associated passion of ours). Either way, we are stoked to be going back in July and not February!

POLAR BEAR CAMPING CLUB

How

camping series warmed up the overlanding community in the heartoftheMidwest.

It all started as a thought on the long boring drive down I-40 on my way to SEMA in Oct of 2022. I wanted to get together a camping series, encompassing a few things, Build the local community , cover the 4 state area, support local shops/businesses, and test our cold weather gear (the best we could with our sometimes mild winters)

I made a few calls while driving and getting in windshield time. Everyone was all in while the idea was being played out in our conversations Ideas were tossed around, some good, some not so good. I told everyone play with your thoughts and let’s re-visit this when I return to normal life in couple weeks after SEMA. If you’ve been to SEMA you’ll understand that last statement, if not picture the crowds of Disneyland x2 while walking 8 plus miles a day to still not ever see everything! I walked 86 miles last year in 4 days and still see pics of builds that I didn’t see, or product vendors that I didn’t get to visit with, it’s massive

As expected, as soon as the talks ended and the bright lights of Las Vegas took over, I quickly shifted gears and didn’t give it much thought Mid November I had a random thought, oh shoot, we better get this rolling if we are going to make a run at organizing this for 2023! A few more calls where made in an effort too quickly throw something together, with the holidays quickly approaching and winter setting in we needed to act fast, we originally where going to piggy back off another group that had already set up a campout, but after more talks they backed out, so I was left to figure it out Some more calls and we assembled the first year of 4 rounds of the PBCC!

Like I mentioned before the main idea was to bring together the community, and support local. I reached out to Chad at Overland Addict and he was all in With some help from our Oklahoma crew, they set up a FB Group, and event bright registration page and we were running.

A quick call to Jerrod at Shop Overland Apparel and he designed us a killer patch design with the 4 states ( ark, mo, ks, ok ) that all fit together like puzzle pieces. These patches were gifts from each state sponsor for attending that round. All participants had to do was register on the app page, show up at the camp on Saturday and be present to collect the patch on Sunday at 9am. I never knew the power of a simple piece of pvc embossed with a design and some velcro. Man, people get serious about patches! After the first couple rounds selling out (limited to 100 ) I quickly found out our first major snag in the registration app, many people where signing up for each person, not each rig.

One patch per rig was the guidelines we set up originally. Each round we came close to “selling out” with attendance numbers in the 90 plus range for all the rounds, Big Brutus did sell out, even more with lots not getting a patch.

“MAN, PEOPLE GET SERIOUS ABOUT PATCHES!”

Oklahoma was sponsored by the now defunct Okie Overland and they planned out a great camping spot by Copan Lake in Bartlesville Ok. A good group of us meet up at their shop in downtown Tulsa and car-avaned up to the camp spot ( about 30 mins north). We had about 25 rigs that made the trip up, with the others meeting us ups there. Like I mentioned earlier this was supposed to be a Saturday pm camp out only, but so many participants were excited they wanted to make this a Friday and Saturday, some even coming in on Thursday!

The next round was hosted by Overland Addict in Nixa Missouri. We again meet up at his shop for Rigs and Coffee and the all pulled out and made the 45 mins trip into the Ozark National Forest for The camping spot he choose for us, Bar K horse ranch Mild temps made for great fireside chats. This location was close enough for Zac Outdoors to step up and offer to do a trial ride Saturday and Sunday. This added element was a great addition to the camping series and something that lots now look forward too!

The third round was at my Buddy Jerrid’s camp ground call Gypsy Camp in Siloam Springs Arkansas Again sponsored by Overland addict. We had pleasant temps and beautiful stars at night. Gypsy camp was an all girls summer camp designed to help teach girls to become a woman, with special classes carting to home making, cooking, dancing etc the camp was placed on the national historical register in 1988.

a cold

After years of being vacant, my buddy Jerrid bought it in 2018 and started the remodel- restoration process in 2019 He runs gypsy camp & canoe now out there with powered sites and a river outfitter service on the Illinois river that runs direct through the camp Super neat place to wonder around anytime of the year, he is closed usually for winter, but allowed us to use the place for PBCC! Lady owned Toyota group out of Centeral ark stepped up and did a really fun facts, search and find type event for the kids with prizes.

4th and final Round was held at Big Brutus in West Mineral Kansas. The same site as we hold Big Iron Overland Rally in the fall each year Big Brutus is simply amazing piece of coal mining history and we always jump at any chance to support or showcase him. All it took was one call to Miss Cindy at Big Brutus and she was all over being the final spot for PBCC We were able to secure a live band and cold weather finally made it way back to PBCC and was welcomed by most! Zac Outdoors once again took the reins for anyone wanting to break camp and get out and explore running most of our “Miners Run Route” around all the pits Big Brutus helped mine and explore SE Kansas

All in all the 2023 PBCC was a huge success We had about 25 people complete the challenge of attending all 4 rounds, We got a late start and did two rounds in January, one in February and one in March. We sold out a few rounds and came close to the 100 limit for the others, the last round we had way more rigs than the 100 limit Shop Overland Apparel design a special plaque to hang on your wall if desired to showcase all the patches gathered if you made the cut of attending all the rounds We had participates traveling from North Dakota and Tennessee and Kentucky to attend these special events!

RIDING THE COATTAILS OF SUCCESS INTO 2024

With the growth of the PBCC in 2023, we need organization, Lee Odom stepped up and const us a great website with our own regist community pictures, classifieds etc

Riding the coattails of the awesome response w the 1st annual PBCC we decided to do it again in 2024 This time we had a good foundation to build off of and decided to start it a little earlier with the first round being in November Zac Outdoors stepped up and took the lead for the Arkansas round. After securing a good spot and getting everything laid out for that spot , we learned that it was not going to work number wise, we had too many! So a quick transition to some private land graciously offered by Rick England moved us closer in the Ozark National Forest t

LOOKING AHEAD TO POLAR BEAR CAMP CLUB 2026

“...THE ROUTE WAS GREAT, HARD ENOUGH TO CHALLENGE THE SEASONED DRIVERS, BUT TAME ENOUGH FOR SOME TO GAIN SOME SKILLS.”

As I write this, we just took off the month of December. To much family, friends, work things happening with the holiday's to have a round in December. We are picking back up in January ( all camps are set up for the 3rd weekend of each month) with Overland Addict sponsoring the Missouri round once agin out at Bar K horse ranch Zac outdoors is doing a trail ride again out at Glade top this year, that will be a great time

The 3rd Round for 2025 PBCC is sponsored by Wander Oklahoma and we will be camping out at Rocking k Farms at Spring creek, Ok in February for valentines weekend!

4th and final round will be at Big Brutus once again with Zac Outdoors putting together a trail exploring ride Lady Owned Toyota Group will be hosting the Kids activities. Games, and a band are in the works again also!

All these events bring together our community around food competitions, and community fires. If you don’t know anyone yet, come on out and experience all the PBCC has to offer and I'm sure you’ll be leaving with some new friends, just bring your big sleeping bag, diesel heater and a good attitude and you’ll be fine!

Looking forward to 2026, with an even bigger schedule and more stops with more states wanting to get involved with the PBCC Keep an eye on our fb group page "Polar bear Camping Club” or our website wwwpolarbearcampingclubcom for all the updates and info.

OVERLAND HOUND

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR ADVENTURE DOG HAPPY ON OVERLANDING TRIPS (AND AVOIDING MUTINY IN THE WILD)

PACK THE ESSENTIALS (AND THEN DOUBLE IT)

FOOD

Sure, you can survive on beef jerky and instant ramen for days, but your dog? No way Dogs have an uncanny ability to act as though they are starving to death if they miss one kibble from their dinner ration Bring their food, treats, and at least one item that makes you question your life choices (like a freezedried bison liver snack that costs more per ounce than filet mignon) because, heck, it’s their vacation, too

WATER

Bring more water than you think you’ll need. You know your dog will either knock over their bowl immediately or attempt to drink from the dirtiest puddle imaginable, and then look offended when you intervene.

MEDS & COMFORT CARE

Don’t forget to pack your pet’s prescriptions, copies of vet records and invest in a good pet-specific first aid kit for emergencies Trust me, they will happen

ADVENTURE ESSENTIALS

One thing we always use on trips is a micro-fiber (not terry) towel for drying off wet dogs and muddy paws Pet wipes are great for cleaning ears and other “areas” that might need cleaning after too many miles and an oblivious owner who forgot how small a dog’s bladder can be Ask me how i know I also like to bring extra leashes and tie-outs in the event that one breaks or is misplaced Or gets chewed to oblivion out of boredom

CREATE A COMFORTAB SPOT IN THE RIG & AT C

COZY AND SAFE IN THE RIG

If your dog is anything like mine, and they sprawl across the entire couch at home, they are not going to be happy wedged in a tiny corner of the truck like an afterthought. Bring a blanket and at the very least, get a harness that clips into the seat belt buckle for safety and to keep them off your lap while driving. Ideally, a crate that is bolted to the vehicle is the best for keeping them safe in the worst case scenario.

SAFE AND SECURE AT CAMP

Keeping your dog on a leash is a good idea and in many public areas, a requirement (i.e., the whole state of Michigan prohibits off-leash dogs in all public areas.) It makes sense for many reasons, the least of which is to prevent them from rolling in every gross thing that they can find or from wolfing down icky things while your back is turned There are many products available for tying them out to make life easier, and the air inside your tent less smelly

SNUGGLY AND WARM AT BEDTIME

Whether in a tent, a trailer or in your rig, make them a cozy spot with a blanket, their favorite chew toy, and maybe even a memory foam dog bed. For chilly nights, Daisy loves her sleeping bag, and I am sure that familiar scents and objects comfort her away from home At least that is what I tell myself to justify the expense as I snap adorable pictures of her wrapped up in it for the ‘gram.

STICK TO YOUR ROUTINE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

FEEDING AND SLEEPING SCHEDULES

It can be really hard to keep on the same meal and bed times when traveling but my dogs KNOW when it is 8 am and 5 pm and they become particularly annoying when they are hungry. Adhering to these times keeps the stress down and the dogs happy

TIRE THEM OUT BEFORE BEDTIME

Imagine a long day of driving, setting up camp, and attempting to cook dinner while fending off hordes of thirsty mosquitoes. You’re exhausted and ready to crawl into your sleeping bag. Your dog, on the other hand, is wound up after hours of napping in the truck

The solution? Activity sessions before bedtime. A long hike, a game of fetch, or some intense tug-of-war can wear them out. Otherwise, they may not be sleepy when bed time rolls around and they play the “I heard a noise, let me bark at it for 45 minutes” game.

YOUR DOG WILL REDEFINE “ADVENTURE”

You may have planned an epic trek to a stunning mountain overlook, or beautiful lakeside campsite but your dog has one goal: to find and roll in something so foul that you reconsider your entire relationship

Whether it’s a sun-ripened fish carcass or rabbit poop, your dog will sniff it out like an elite military operative

The solution? Accept that your idea of adventure and theirs may differ And pack dog shampoo, unless you enjoy sharing your vehicle with an animal that smells like a decayed swamp monster

Overlanding with a dog is not for the faint of heart You will experience muddy paw prints on everything you own, dog hair in your coffee, but you will also have the best adventure partner in the world one who doesn’t care about your route planning skills, your gear setup, or how many times you get lost As long as you’re together, your adventure dog is happy. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what it is all about?

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to figure out how to get the smell of dead fish out of my truck before we hit the road again

TIPS FOR CHOOSING A WRAP FOR YOUR OFF-ROAD VEHICLE

1

Durability is Key – Off-road adventures put your vehicle through tough conditions, so choose a wrap made from high-quality, UV-resistant, and weatherproof vinyl Look for brands like Avery Dennison that offer rugged materials designed to withstand mud, rocks, and harsh sunlight without fading or peeling. Adding a protective laminate can also extend the life of your wrap

2. Ease of Maintenance and Repair – Off-roading can be rough on your wrap, so opt for a design that allows for easy patching if it gets scratched or torn. Matte or textured finishes can help hide minor scuffs, while modular designs (such as separate panels for doors and fenders) make it easier to replace damaged sections without redoing the entire wrap. Regular cleaning and occasional touch-ups will keep your wrap looking fresh for years to come.

Choose a Design That Matches Your Style and Terrain – Whether you want a bold, attention-grabbing look or a stealthy, camo-inspired design, consider the environments where you’ll be driving. A highcontrast design stands out at events and on the road, while earth tones or digital camo help you blend into the backcountry. Think about whether you want a full wrap, a partial wrap, or just custom graphics to complement your vehicle’s existing color

3 A well-chosen wrap not only enhances the look of your off-road vehicle but also provides an extra layer of f

COMMUNITY CULTURE

THE POWER OF NICHE OVERLANDING EVENTS

In the ever-expanding world of overlanding, massive expos and large-scale gatherings attract thousands of enthusiasts eager to explore the latest gear, network with industry leaders, and immerse themselves in the culture of vehicle-assisted adventure travel. However, there is something uniquely compelling about smaller, niche events gatherings that provide a more intimate and immersive experience for attendees and vendors alike. These specialized events foster deeper connections, allow for more meaningful engagement, and often create lifelong memories in a way that some larger expos may struggle to achieve

MOORE Expo’s Big Iron Overland Rally, Natural State Overland’s Bonfire Rally and Rendezvous in the Ozarks, and Northology Adventures’ Overland Retreats exemplify the power of the niche overlanding gathering to have a profound impact.

BIG IRON OVERLAND RALLY

WHERE CAMPFIRE CULTURE MEETS OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVAL

Celebrating it’s fifth year, the Big Iron Overland Rally, hosted by the team behind MOORE Expo, stands as a prime example of blending community with the brands and companies that support it. Set against the backdrop of the historic Big Brutus a massive retired coal shovel in southeast Kansas this overlanding campout transforms a vendordriven event into a weekend of camaraderie, adventure, and live music. Instead of a transactional

atmosphere where attendees shuffle from booth to booth, Big Iron creates an experience where vendors become fellow campers, conversations flow naturally around campfires, and the spirit of overlanding is shared in real-time For vendors, this format fosters awareness, brand loyalty and deepens connections with their customers in a way that a quick handshake at a trade show never could

“THESE SPECIALIZED EVENTS FOSTER DEEPER CONNECTIONS, ALLOW FOR MORE MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT, AND OFTEN CREATE LIFELONG MEMORIES...”

NATURURAL STATE OVERLAND

BONFIRE RENDEZVOUS & RENDEZVOUS IN THE OZARKS

Arkansas is home to some of the most underrated overlanding terrain in the country, and Natural State Overland knows exactly how to bring enthusiasts together in the heart of it. Their two flagship events, the Bonfire Rendezvous and the Rendezvous in the Ozarks, showcase the essence of a regional overland rally intimate, immersive, and undeniably impactful. The Bonfire Rally, as its name suggests, thrives on the magic of gathering around the flames, where strangers quickly become friends and the best gear reviews happen over a shared pot of coffee. Meanwhile, the Rendezvous in the Ozarks takes a more adventure-based approach, inviting attendees to explore the vast trails of the Ozark National Forest while still offering a carefully curated vendor area. Both events embrace the idea that overlanding isn’t just about gear it’s about the journey, people, and stories told along the way

NORTHOLOGY ADVENTURES RETREATS

A UNIQUE TAKE ON ADVENTURE TRAVEL GATHERINGS

While overland expos and rallies focus on gear, vendors, and community gatherings, Northology Adventures’ Overland Retreats take a different approach blending education and adventure into an all-encompassing experience These retreats are designed to be less about “seeing and buying” and more about “doing and experiencing.”

Set in stunning landscapes, Northology’s retreats prioritize trail rides, hands-on workshops, and skillbuilding sessions that range from off-road recovery techniques to campfire cooking. Attendees leave not only with new gear but with new skills, confidence, and connections This year, Northology Adventures is expanding their retreat concept into Idaho’s breathtaking wilderness. Their new event will take place on a working cattle ranch between the Sawtooth Mountains and the Lost River Range, offering a truly off-grid experience where participants can unplug, explore, and reconnect with both nature and the overland community. The setting itself fosters a deeper appreciation for land stewardship and self-sufficiency core principles of the overlanding ethos

WHY SMALLER COMMUNITY EVENTS MATTER

There’s an undeniable magic to attending a niche overlanding event Smaller gatherings create an environment where every interaction matters Vendors become more than just brands they become mentors, fellow adventurers, and sometimes even friends Attendees leave not just with new gear, but with richer experiences and deeper knowledge

For overlanders who crave connection over crowds, the community-driven vibe of Big Iron, the storytelling culture of Bonfire Rally, or the immersive adventure of a Northology Retreat, these smaller events are shaping the future of the overlanding experience one campfire at a time.
