On February 13-14, 2021, the Midwest’s Overlanding and Off-Road Expo (MOORE) returns to the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield, Missouri with more vendors, products, displays, hands-on seminars, demos, celebrity guests, live music and fun. After a break-out debut in 2020, where thousands of adventure travelers, off-road enthusiasts and outdoor fanatics attended the debut show, the momentum continues to build.

“The first year exceeded our expectations” “The show floor was filled by mid-day with thousands of overlanding enthusiasts. We’re still 6 months out, and already the interest and confirmed vendors for the 2021 show has far exceeded last year” said MOORE Expo founder and owner Chris Holloway.

Getting outdoors and taking the road less traveled is at the heart of overlanding, and the MOORE Expo is geared to help you, your friends and your family make the most of your adventure travels. At the expo you’ll find 80,000 square feet of vendors with gear and accessories for off-road vehicles including jeeps, SUVs and trucks. You’ll also find the latest in powersports vehicles, overland engineered camping gear like rooftop tents, expedition trailers and cooking equipment; outdoor sport accessories for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking; and the latest in navigation, entertainment and safety.

The MOORE Expo plans to feature a host of educational seminars and live demonstrations including navigation, vehicle recovery, camp cooking and safety. In addition, MOORE has teamed up with Jeff Foster of REROVER, who rebuilds and customizes vintage Land Rovers, and will offer three guided adventure rides over the expo weekend between the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch (SMORR) in Seymour, MO and the MOORE Expo. The approximate 3hour ride will travel through parts of the Mark Twain National Forest.

We chat with Dustin Campbell, VP of sales at Ozark Mountain Adventure Vans about the business, trends in the industry and MOORE. I was introduced to the Overland Community several years ago while out west. Being a father of four, my wife and I like to take our children out into the deep wilderness to experience nature, adventure and fun. I became immediately obsessed with builds, gadgets gizmos etc.

The big set back was when it came to much of these items they were incredibly expensive….for example a typical adventure van can topple 200k very easily from most competitors. We have been in the car converting business for over 40 years, starting out primarily building limousines for the livery industry and for celebrities. We moved later into expanding our portfolio into funeral service vehicles but always wanted to break into the RV market. We started our R&D process in late 2018 and finally released our RV and Adventure van line in late 2020. We have a wide variety of automotive customization services, from custom one-off stretch limos, to matching fleets, funeral hearses, limos, and removal vans, to custom hot rods as well as our full line of custom Sprinter, Transit, Promaster RV and adventure vans.

How has the increased popularity of van life and domesic travel effected your business? It's been an incredibly humbling experience. With our 100,000 sq ft facility and over 70 employees our turn around times have always been fast. But when people found out that we can build a full RV or adventure van in as little as 10 weeks, our phones started ringing off the hook. Its spurred growth and allowed us to rebrand quickly as well as made the entire family style working environment incredibly positive and fun! Not that it wasn’t before but something new and different is always a good time. I think that this is a trend that people are just now discovering out of necessity to have recreation outside of the home. With that said I feel like its re-lit the passion of good clean outdoor family fun. The growth in the community has been insane and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon.

What innovations in your industry are exciting to you?

Anything that makes the cars more self-sufficient without compromising quality, or maintenance is always exciting. We have a full R&D team constantly researching the pros and cons of “bolt on items” and we are working with manufacturers to bring new innovative products to the builds.

What can an attendee expect to see at your booth at MOORE Expo? We will be bringing a 2020 Sprinter 144 4x4 that we are building specifically for the show, one of our 2wd 3500 RVs as well as unveiling a very special build we are just getting out of the R&D department.

They can also meet myself, the owners and get some free swag. I am really looking forward to it being my head fist dive into the overlanding sales world, networking with other vendors and getting ideas from clients. The best part of this job is building that client/sales relationship in person..

What kind of advice would you give someone who was in the market for a van conversion company? Do your homework and shop competitively there are a lot of bug out items that can be deleted or replaced with other more durable items that can save you thousands.

Always look at price points and warranty as those are the most important aspects of an emotional investment as such. Also ask about timelines and think about the amount of money you will be investing vs. how long it will take to get your product!

Explaining the legalities and principles we should stand by while exploring the world gives a bit of a different perspective than simply telling them “go here and follow this.”

Google maps can do that, and they would not learn anything.

If the goal of overlanding is to be self-reliant while exploring remote places, then it all starts with learning where you are going and how to get there. This is especially crucial if you have never been. When you create your own route, you must study the area, the legal trails, and the terrain. This can become critically important if your rig breaks down, gets stuck, or if someone gets injured and you require help. Since you planned the trip, you know how to tell someone else to get to your location. You know where the resources are along the way, and you have a better understanding of the terrain that will be encountered. Without this planning step, you put yourself and others in danger.

It is an exciting time to be involved in the off-road and overland communities! In 2017, the off-road industry boasted a $19.5B dollar value. By 2024, it is estimated to be at $28B. There has been a steady increase of sales in the off-road community that has shown no signs of slowing down.

Overland travel saw a dramatic increase in popularity over the last 10 years. Ever since the first Overland Expo with 900 attendees the industry continues to explode.

Healthy economies provided the resources for many to dabble in something that drew their attention by the ability to explore, travel, and have their own adventures.

In 2020, COVID-19 has pushed people outside more than ever. The times of only finding information through side conversations, obscure posts online, and the lone editorial of Overland Journal are over.

Overland Journal captivated the imagination of its readers with captivating tales of far flung adventures around the globe and inspired an entirely new means of story telling. YouTube and social media have brought the same excitement of travel to the masses.

With an increase of newcomers, there is a need to educate more than ever. Those entering the community have a duty to make sure they are doing so safely, responsibly, and

respectfully. Many have traveled these mountain passes, deserts, and plains without the traffic, damage to the terrain, and numerous accidents for years.

It would be easy to just blame the newcomers . There is a responsibility to educate, encourage, and promote safe off-road travel and tread light principles to those new to what many have cherished for a long time.

Failing to take on this task will ultimately result in closures, restrictions, injury/death, and be the undoing of a great pastime and livelihood for many.

Growing up was enjoyable for me.

I had the family that every young boy dreams of. My father is a preacher and I was born while he attended seminary in Texas.

When I turned 5, my sister was born in Huntsville, AL. She was not fun to play with, got me in tons of trouble and began to get on my nerves. As a result, I struck up a deal with the mailman to trade my baby sister for his bulldog. I was extremely angry the day I had her in her buggy, out by the mailbox, when he showed up without the dog and called the deal off. Apparently, he was not as serious about this deal as I was.

Time went by and we moved around a LOT. I believe I counted 38 different houses we had lived in by the time I entered High School.

Yes, that was not fun, but it was cool making new friends everywhere we went. We finally

settled in Arkansas. Dad went to work teaching at a Bible College and mom began teaching school. My parents were amazing.

They always took care of us. We were loved very much.

My grandparents were very active in my childhood as well. My grandma lived 3 hours away. We traveled to see her several times a year. She had a pesky Chihuahua that hated everyone in the world. She made the best macaroni and cheese and always got me the Star Wars stuff I wanted for Christmas. My Granny and Papaw lived about 30 minutes away and I spent as much time there as possible. I will never forget waking up to the smells of biscuits and gravy cooking each morning for breakfast, the days of messing around in the shop with my papaw or tinkering on his boat. I will always remember

the many days he took me fishing and time we spent together. Those are memories I will cherish forever.

This was back before Social Media. This was back when you reminisced over the photo albums that sat on the coffee tables.

This was back when families made it a priority to be together. You missed ball games to be with family. You missed school or work to go to reunions and see family you might only see once a year. Families took vacations together and cherished each other as the most important people in our lives.

However, times have changed. The term "family" is used a little more loosely now. The word "family" is as common as the number of red lights you encounter in a large city.

You are always running, running past and sometimes not even paying attention to them.

Social media has caused us to have friends around the world that otherwise we may have never known. We travel around, go to events and become close with many of these friends. We strategically plan our vacations with each other. We contact each other and plan to meet and camp at the same spot to spend time together. We have common interests and loves. We share goals and dreams. Very soon, we consider them family.

Some become closer to us than those cousins and uncles that we barely even know. We attend their wedding, pray for their sick, and talk often. We are family.

Overlanding is not considered a hobby for good reason. Yes, we do have collections of certain things that are part of it. The antique coffee makers and countless number of Vintage Coleman stoves in my garage are proof of that. There are parts of it that are deemed an obsession or interest in our lives but collectively you come up with a beautiful lifestyle that many are being drawn to every day. We build our rigs, we buy the gear, and we research areas and routes and immerse ourselves into every nook and cranny of this lifestyle. We join every social media group so

we can see what others do, post questions when we have them, and keep tabs on events that are in our area. But what makes this a lifestyle is not what we have, not what we look at and research, it is not how much gear we can collect or how much stuff we can pack into our rigs. What differentiates this from any other hobby in life is family.

The people that we meet at different events.

The good friends that we develop over campfires and propane fired dinners. We live for that next time we can get together and miss each other when we are apart. We call often. We message or text daily or weekly. We plan together and enjoy this particular lifestyle together. That is what makes Overlanding so special. The people.
