Once a year the MOORE Expo returns to the Ozar Fairgrounds in Springfield, Missouri with more vendors, displays, hands-on seminars, demonstrations, celebrity gu music and fun. After a break-out debut in 2020, where tho adventure travelers, off-road enthusiasts and outdoor attended the debut show, the momentum continues to build

CAPTURING THE BEST DRONE FOOTAGE

Aerial views offer a whole new perspective on the world around you that you just can’t get from the ground. There’s nothing like viewing the mountains from the air, and nothing gives a better idea of how remote an area is than a view showing the entire landscape

For filmmakers, these views used to be available exclusively to big budget productions with access to helicopters. In 2013, DJI launched the Phantom 1, their first consumer grade drone. By 2015, when they released the Phantom 3 (which included a camera, unlike 1 & 2), they dominated the drone market, and had revolutionized filmmaking for thousands of people worldwide Today you can buy a 4k drone with 3 axis stabilization and GPS navigation for just a few hundred dollars, allowing many of us in the overland and off road community to use drones for YouTube videos.

GPS in drones makes them accessible to everyone, since no flying experience is required to get them up in the air; if you don’t push any buttons, they’ll hover in place. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always translate to great video! The best shots also incorporate the other strength of having a drone: movement. Add a slow slide left or right for the low down shots, and go for big sweeping shots with a very slow turn while up high. If you can get layers of movement, with a foreground and background moving at different s d it looks even better! The key is the smooth movement H direction or turn for as long as you can and cut any jerky m from your final videos while editing.

Another challenge is the legal use of drones. Most people know that you’re not allowed to fly a drone from a national park, but there’s a lot more than that. You’re actually not allowed to fly from any land managed by the national park service (most national seashores, a bunch of national recreation areas, national preserves, etc ), any wilderness area, most state parks, most wildlife management areas, and probably several others I can’t think of off the top of my head. I’ve seen plenty of videos of people flying in Mojave National Preserve, despite the risk of a $5,000 fine! It’s not just about the land either; there’s plenty of airspace you can’t fly in Just one example is restricted airspace, which covers tens of thousands of square miles There are several tools you can use to see where you can fly, such as the Airmap or B4UFLY apps. You can also refer to the aeronautical charts which are available online for free

The biggest downside to drones is that they don’t record they did, it would be pretty unbearable! Sound is a huge pa production, whether it’s on the big screen or on YouT possible to watch through a video with poor resolution, bu possible to watch through a video with bad sound. To s problem, I have a library of sounds I’ve recorded on m camera and with a microphone outside the vehicle that I over drone clips. You can also download sound effects on used sounds of birds chirping, flags flapping, and even a cycle driving through a tunnel that matched up perfectly driving over an iron bridge. Most people won’t even no you’ve added sound because it just seems natural to have th

If you’re flying for YouTube, another thing to consider is the Part 107 certification. Certification is required for commercial drone use. This means not just monetized YouTube videos, but YouTube videos that you stand to gain financially from. This could be through sponsorships, affiliate links, or promoting some other way you get paid. While the test requires you to learn a lot of useless information (I’ve not looked at a single METAR since), it does teach you how to read the VFR maps and to know where you can fly.

Finally, there’s the question of which drone to get. DJI make some of the best consumer grade drones you can buy, and you’ll get great quality footage from the Mini, Air, and Mavic series drones. I bought the Mavic 3 because it comes with two lenses, one of which has a 7x zoom, which gives a fantastic parallax effect (the foreground and background moving at different speeds) The downside to DJI drones is that the obstacle avoidance isn’t great, and your best results will be from flying them manually. The alternative is a drone from Skydio. Skydio drones fly themselves automatically and have fantastic obstacle avoidance. The trade off is that the camera quality isn’t as good, and in some situations the faster movements spoil the footage

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

RISK MITIGATION FOR THE WAYWARD TRAVELER

That particular trip was rife with mechanical issues and repairs weeks before this very picture. The 80 series was making some mild noise in the front differential. To make the trip, the decision was made to complete the front differential work once we returned. The truck had no noise or issues at lower range. To protect the diff I would disconnect the front drive shaft to reduce wear and tear at highway speeds Once there I would reattach for off-road and normal driving

After disconnecting the front drive shaft, we loaded the truck, and away we went. In all the attention I was giving the front differential I likely missed a few things my truck was attempting to tell me.

The windows were rolling up and down a little slower I thought, “the older age of the truck really is starting to show on these window motors.”The drive from KC to Colorado was done mostly in the afternoon to evening. The trucks headlights began to seem more dim as we rolled into our first camp.

The next day we hit the trails Several miles and trails later my dashboard cluster began to dance as if it was showing the trucks heart beat. Then the gauges flatlined. Turning off all electronics we drove another 15 minutes until we got to the trailhead. The truck then shut off. The truck would not start.

Thankfully, I was traveling with friends. We towed the 80 back to town Tested the battery and alternator The alternator had given its last breath A new one would be in town the next morning That night we made quick work to remove the alternator. The next day I quickly got the new one installed. In all nearly a day lost in traveling and exploring dealing with repairs. Thankfully we were able to get parts.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This quote is from 1736 when Benjamin Franklin was advising Philadelphians it was better to prevent fires from occurring rather than try to fighting them. When traveling off-road, long distances, and to remote locations we should take significant amount of time, energy, and preparation of our vehicles and keep

them mechanically maintained. Pushing a trip and extending repairs can make matters worse at the most inconvenient moments. There are a few preparations that are encouraged to take with vehicle maintenance.

Areyouprepared? Areyouprepared?

One way to avoid these untimely events is to be proactive with Preventative Maintenance. These are considered to be usage based (mileage), calendar (time), and predictive (known issues).

Usage based on miles is things like oil and fluid changes and tire rotations

Calendar would be your oil needs to be changed this many miles or before a prescribed time period. Predictive entails items that are known to fail. Being proactive you can avoid these items being an issue later. One item that comes to mind is the old pesky heat hose on 80 series. Before those fail a preventative repair is completed when its more convenient.

Keeping your vehicle in top condition will help provide the best of your vehicle for years to come. It also lets you explore with confidence the vehicle is in the best condition for exploration.

OVERLANDING IS FOR EVERYBODY

All Things Overlanding

Overlanding has become extremely popular over the last few years, which has created a lot of cliques and niches of people, as often happens on the internet. While many of us want to travel, explore, and hit the trails full time, most of us are trapped at a full time job, so we spend our spare time perusing Facebook groups and forums to satisfy our craving for more mods, gear, and vicarious adventure. As a result, there is a lot of division and gatekeeping happening in these online groups where people constantly argue about what is or isn’t Overlanding. So, let’s just state once and for all that Overlanding is for everyone.

One of the key reasons why overlanding is for everybody is because it allows people to explore the world on their terms. Sure, you could argue that taking a weekend trip a couple of hours away to hit some trails and camp for a couple of nights is just camping. If we’re being honest with ourselves, this is likely closer to what it is. However, my opinion is that if you’re reliant on your vehicle and carry everything with you that you need for that trip, you’re overlanding

other (and not gatekeeping the hobby, by the way) why not get on there and applaud people for trying new things and creating their own DIY projects

Another reason why overlanding is for everybody is because it can be done on a budget. While the cost of an off-road vehicle or overlanding gear can be substantial, the overall cost of overlanding is often much lower than other forms of travel For example, overlanders can camp in remote locations, cook their own meals, and travel long distances without having to pay for accommodations or restaurants. This makes overlanding an accessible option for those who want to travel but are on a tight budget.

Sure, there are people out there with 100’s of thousands of dollars in their rigs (and good for them, no gatekeeping here) but you also don’t have to feel intimidated or “unworthy” of getting into overlanding just because you don’t have the disposable cash to spend 10’s or even 100’s of thousands of dollars on your build. Grab what you’ve got plus a tent and some cooking gear and go explore!

Argue with me if you want, but what is the harm in calling most vehicle reliant travel overlanding? Let’s encourage people to build their vehicles for more comfort and capability. Let’s focus on getting out as much as we can to enjoy nature and time away from the busy lives we lead without so much focus on creating barriers for each other. Instead of hopping on your favorite Facebook overlanding group (scan the QR code in this article to check out Newbie Overlanders on Facebook) for a group that’s about supporting each

Overlanding is also a great way to connect with nature and disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. Getting away and exploring serves a very real function of helping you de-stress and escape common issues that a lot of people face in this modern age Overlanding obviously involves camping and spending time outdoors, which has been shown to have numerous mental and physical health benefits, including reducing stress and improving sleep.

Aside from just de-stressing, overlanding is a great way to build confidence and develop new skills. While overlanding can be challenging at times, it’s also an opportunity to push yourself out of

your comfort zone to learn and try new things. Whether it’s learning how to cook over an open flame, navigating off road using GPS, or troubleshooting a problem with your vehicle, overlanding provides tons of opportunities to grow and learn new skills. Not to mention, overlanding often involves teamwork and communication, making it a great activity for families, friends, or couples to bond and spend more time together away from the devices.

Finally, overlanding is a great way to make memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s watching the sunset over a remote mountain range, swimming in a crystal-clear lake, or sharing stories around a campfire, overlanding provides numerous opportunities for unique and unforgettable experiences. If you’ve never done it, it can be hard to put into words, but after a long day (or multiple days) on a trail

exploring, chatting on the radio, and then settling down at camp, there are just awesome stories and relationships that come from those shared experiences. These stories and memories also occur whether you go on a month long, cross-border trip or a 3 day long weekend trip to a neighboring state, which further supports my idea that overlanding is what you make of it as long as you’re reliant on your vehicle throughout the trip.

So, overlanding is for everybody, regardless of their background or eto explore the way they want, it can be done on a budget, it connects you with nature, and it allows you to see things you’ve never seen while creating unforgettable memories Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a first-time overlander, there’s no better time to hit the road and start exploring the world than now. Get out with what you’ve got and grow into the gear you may need in the future. And don’t let anyone tell you “it’s not overlanding” just because it was a two day trip. Live. Learn. Discover.

WOMEN OFFROAD: ONE OF OUR OWN AT THE REBELLE

A love for the outdoors is life changing in so many ways. It's a place of exploration, adventure, excitement, relaxation, and fun. For me, the outdoors has also been healing, a place of self reflection, somewhere to build friendships, somewhere to enjoy being alone, and so much more. One thing I never imagined is the outdoors creating a new path for my life and sending me to compete in the Rebelle Rally in 2022. This article is meant to recap my experience at the rally, but I think a vital part of it is getting to experience the many different paths that the competitors take over their lives to end up at the starting line There are women from all over the world, no two backgrounds the same, with so many different influences and stories. I’m thrilled to tell you about mine.

Growing up I found my connection to nature in the wooded valley behind my house, meeting horses for the first time at a birthday party, and mountain biking with my Dad and Brother There was a small patch of bamboo that deer would rest in at night and was so out of place in the small suburban valley forest in Charleston West Virginia. It was beautiful and peaceful and I would often escape there when I wanted to adventure alone. I would sit in the bamboo and listen to the leaves blow in the wind and hope that one of the deer would come be my friend. Very Disney Princess-esque. When I first met horses at a birthday party I was five years old, and I’ll never forget how amazed I was at their beauty and kindness Horses look into your soul and reassure you with one blink that they are so glad you’re there to spend time with them. I could be free, independent, and run into the woods on horseback without fear. Mountain biking with my Dad was more for leisure than anything, but my brother always had a knack for seeking out adrenaline I was his shadow and I would follow him anywhere, including downhill trails that scared the absolute crap out of me. However, it made me brave and showed me that nature would embrace my desire to adventure and explore. Looking back at these first memories of falling in love with the outdoors I realized the common theme. The outdoors embraces me and pushes me to seek adventure without fear. This has pushed me throughout my life even when I didn’t realize it and I know it is how I ended up competing in the Rebelle Rally

Off-roading wasn’t something I did often growing up, a few fire access roads in the local state park with a creek here or there with my daddy was the extent of my expertise However, over the last seven years it has taken me to amazing places and met people I couldn’t imagine not having in my life. The adrenaline, always changing trails and challenges, and the community hooked me fast. It’s how I met my teammate Lisa Addington, got introduced to the Rebelle Rally, and now has sent me to my new employer Dometic

On to the good stuff: the Rebelle Rally. It’s an eight day, all offroad navigation rally for women. The longest rally in the United States, it covers 2500+ kilometers on average, and crosses multiple western states to end in the Imperial Sand Dunes in Glamis, California. The route is unknown to the competitors until the morning of each day, and we do not find out the starting point of the entire competition until just a few months prior And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much to the competition it’s almost easier just to list it off: off-road, 2500+ kilometers, 8 days, map and compass only, no electronics or bluetooth devices, routes given each morning with about 1.5hrs to plot your checkpoints and decide your route plan, multiple routes across competitors, multiple maps and scales across each day, checkpoints you must find, checkpoints with nothing there, Michelin Star chef Drew Deckman - and that’s as much detail as I can give without giving too much away. So, how do you even begin to prepare for something of this magnitude? For me, I realized the most important part was going to be finding a teammate: enter my dear friend Lisa Addington

Lisa and I met in 2018 through a local Kansas City off-road club, the Midwest Krawlers, and found a kinship in each other. Then we just kept running into each other on the trail. She had great snacks, I ate all her snacks and tried to repay her with jokes, and we wheeled hard. When my boyfriend, James, suggested I enter and then five seconds later I decided to do it, I knew my biggest challenge was going to be choosing a partner How do you

decide something like that when you’ve had the luck to meet so many amazing women wheelers?! Ultimately, it comes down to who matches your spirit, patience, competitiveness, and willingness to get lost in the middle of the desert for eight days. That slims it down much quicker. When Lisa commented on a social media post I made, asking, “Where are all my lady wheelers?” I couldn’t believe I didn’t think of her immediately. When I told her about Rebelle, and asked her if she wanted to be my navigator, she was beyond excited about it I couldn’t have chosen a better partner

We started our prep for 2022 in April of 2021, wanting to give ourselves plenty of time for preparations. There is so much that goes into being rally ready: sponsors, entry fee, equipment, vehicle modification, vehicle maintenance, required documents and deadlines, practicing map reading, plotting, compass navigation, route planning, formulas, road books (which are a whole other wing of training), solo spotting practice, and probably 100 or so other things. Lisa focused on navigation, and I focused on the vehicle. Luckily I already had my 4th Generation 4Runner I’d been building out over the last 6 or so years in such a good spot, it was really about me growing my knowledge on how to MacGyver mechanic and correctly mechanic to an extent I’m so glad I did, because on the next to last day a bolt came loose and fell out of my driver front sway bar link, which then bent my e rod and tore off my cv boot, all while we were in the sand dunes. Perfect place to have an open axle and grease flying all over everything. With some light guidance and reassurance that my tie rod would make it from the awesome Rebelle Rally Mechanics team, I was able to get her fixed-up enough myself for the last day in the dunes without having to take a penalty for using the mechanics. It was more annoying than anything, because I torqued those bad boys down again just two weeks prior, but it was a really fun night I’ll never forget. My dear friend and teammate had the tough job of navigation and trained for months She went and took an orienteering class, printed custom

maps, took online classes, read books, the whole gambit. It’s been so amazing to watch her learn and learn with her I can’t go too in-depth about the maps because it gives away too much information, and that’s part of being a rookie! You’re going to have a learning curve that no amount of training or practicing can prepare you for. Lisa handled it in style and we laughed and enjoyed ourselves every single day.

The final part I find most valuable of the Rebelle goes back to our journey and growth along the way This was one of the hardest and most exhilarating competitions in my life. There are personal emotions and fears mixed-in with adrenaline and excitement all at once, then throw in your teammate who is experiencing the same things but in her own way. It’s amazing to watch all the different teams through the week and how they ebb and flow Are there spicy and extra spicy moments? Sometimes! I mean, it’s an off-road rally through nowhere with not much cargo and not enough time to eat snacks. We are all spicy women to begin with, just because we have the cojones to do it. Lisa and I were and are so lucky to be a true team. We both had our moments but we never took it out on one another. For that, my dearest friend, I cannot thank you enough We didn’t place as well as we would’ve hoped for our rookie year, but we finished, and we finished smiling, with nothing but joy from the high of the week to take us back into society.

I hope that everyone takes a moment to look around in their life for something they dream of doing, even if you had never considered really doing it, and go for it Make that next goal for yourself, and create experiences that will become glorious memories when you can’t partake anymore. Ladies, let’s get out on the trails and into the industry and CRUSH. One gal uplifting another is a powerful thing.

Overlanding is built for dogs, middle of nowhere, nothing but time to throw a frisbee and unlimited new smells. A match made in heaven, or is it? What’s your position on a tent full of dog hair or tweezing off ticks? Yeh, camping with your four legged friends can have some downsides, but I’ll take it over most humans any day.

The trick is appropriate prep. Sure, there’s the obvious stuff, maybe a little more water, some kibble and if your canine is spoiled correctly, a lightweight dog bed, but to make days on the road with doggos a sheer delight here’s our top eight recommendations

At first this one seemed a bit too “dressing up your dog”, but it soon became obvious that Ranger’s ability to carry her own water, cookies and bowl was pretty damned handy Added bonus, is all that stuff now lives in one location and you’re never out on the trail trying to pour water from your canteen into your hand. For the smaller dogs they also double as a handle and for the larger dogs they can carry your crap as well. Naturally endless sizes and colorways are available and matching your Gobi tan Rubicon is easily doable. Most are under $40 and washable.

1 - GPS Tracking device

Here’s the thing, your dog’s sense of smell is believed to be 10,000+ times better than yours and that secret spot in the woods you chose to camp is going to present a cornucopia of new scents to follow in a completely unfamiliar area. GPS trackers are that bit of precaution like traction boards and spare tires, you hope to not have to use them, but when you do, they are lifesavers. These relatively inexpensive and waterproof units are clipped to your dog's collar and read by an app on your phone Most require a subscription, but even that is only a few dollars a month One of our favorites is Tractive units

2 - Removable seat cover

These are the ideal addition to your camping gear arsenal. Most clip onto the backseat headrests and either tuck under the seat or can be clipped to headrests on front seats creating a cocoon of protection for pet and car Added bonus is easy removal for cleaning and non furry passengers. Pro tip, grab a version with the built in pocket for easy access to toys, poop bags and frisbees. The Urpower unit has survived two years of Labrador abuse without a hiccup, is readily available in multiple colors and two sizes on Amazon

3 - Dog backpack

A must have for dogverlanding. From stopping at the gas station on the way to the wild to hiking deep in the backwoods, a simple, minimal spillage way to get your dog the hydration he needs is key. We keep one in the pocket of the seat cover for quick access at stops, one in the camping gear and one that clips to our Labs backpack. They’re under ten bucks and available in endless shades that readily allow color coordinating to your Tacoma.

This one is a little trickier. First off, tick prevention is mandatory if you’re adventuring in areas where they are prevalent Ask your vet for a recommendation, but we’ve had good luck with Frontline products What happens if you’re miles from civilization and you realize Benji is allergic to skunkweed? Can’t really pop a Claritin can he? Actually in most cases, he can and that and a handful of other human meds are very helpful and relatively safe for canines, including Benadryl, Imodium and even Neosporin. Check with your veterinary healthcare team to make sure that these are suitable for your dog

Dogs have superior night vision and think nothing of wandering away from camp to check out the crunchy sound that you probably didn’t hear A glowing collar allows you to keep an eye on their night time activities at a glance We like the rechargeable units and most are waterproof as well. Naturally Amazon has an unlimited supply and if you are so inclined can get them in various colors.

This one is particularly important if you cross the Canadian border and most times will be sent back without proper paperwork. Your vet can produce the appropriate docs and it will need to include breed, sex, color and weight of your dog and the trade name of the vaccine used.

If your canine camper requires a leash this is the ultimate cheat code to happy camping. Run a thin rope from your rig to the nearest tree and loop it through your dog's leash handle. Danger dog can now traverse your campsite without tangling you up in a mess of balance threatening cable Pro tip, use a leash with a clip at the handle so going on and off the zip line is a low drama affair. We also recommend the line be higher than your tallest camper to avoid clothes lining anyone. Your dog will thank you later.

Camping with your dog pal is an incredible experience, they are far more adventurous than you are, never complain about the temperature and you’re liable to hike further and discover things you would never have otherwise. The best part for me is the exhausted dog smile that says “this was the best day of my life” as they drift off into doggy dreamland
