PRAYER BULLETIN

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This afternoon as I sat in my study with a man from church we were both stunned by the way the Lord had answered the prayers we prayed when last we met. We had prayed for the needs of each other’s families. What had happened since then was a little different from what we were thinking when we asked, but it was very clearly the goodness of God answering those prayers. As you look back on 2025, can you see the goodness of God in answer to your prayers?

One little incident in Jesus’ ministry I have not often lingered upon long enough to learn its lessons is the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17. Ten lepers approached Jesus and cried out to him for mercy. Jesus immediately granted their request and he sent them to the priests to verify they had been healed. They all rushed off. This was a miracle and at last they could throw off the stigma and isolation that had been part and parcel of their lives until now.

Then one of them stopped in his tracks, turned back and “fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks”. Ten lepers had been healed, but only one thought to say “thank you”. That sounds so much like our world, doesn’t it?

But the incident is not just about ingratitude, or good old-fashioned politeness, for the one who stopped and came back to Jesus was a Samaritan, as Jesus put it “a foreigner”. The most unexpected of the ten, one not only on the edge of Jewish society but completely excluded from it. Yet this man’s experience of grace was yet one more indication of God’s faithfulness to his promise to Abraham: that through him he would bless not just Israel but those outside the chosen nation as well.

It wasn’t just a simple “thank you” either. As Jesus put it, he had returned “to give praise to God”. He had received something he knew he could not achieve or merit. It was entirely from Jesus and it provoked praise to the one true God. Out of his character as just and merciful, full of integrity and full of compassion, Jesus had given this man what he asked for. And seeing what this said about God, the Samaritan man gave God the praise that is his due.

Answered prayer isn’t just an opportunity to thank God for his mercy, though it certainly is that. It is also an opportunity to recognise who God is and what he is like. He is worthy of our praise. His gentle provision of what we need flows out of who he is.

The God who has answered our prayers throughout this year deserves our thanks and our praise. Because of who he is, we can keep asking him for what we need with confidence. Thank you for praying for the College. And let us praise the God who answers those prayers.
