Chairman’s Report

To our valued members,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Moorebank Sports Club Journal.

The first half of 2025 has been nothing short of remarkable. We’ve experienced a season of growth, opportunity, and community spirit—cementing Sporties as a true cornerstone of the community.

One of the most significant achievements this year has been securing additional land to support the Club’s future. The purchase of 17,000 sqm of land surrounding our Club is a significant win for the community and members. With this land, we now have the ability to expand our offering and protect the future of your Club. My thanks to the Board, Members and the community for their assistance in delivering this outcome.

In the spirit of community, we’ve continued to proudly support a range of local causes and organisations doing incredible work. Our long-standing partnership with Miracle Babies was recognised at the Clubs & Community Awards, where we were honoured to be named a finalist in the Mental Wellbeing category. We also celebrated with Georges River Life Care, whose “Care for a Walk” initiative—delivered in partnership with Sporties—earned us finalist recognition in the Social Inclusion category.

We were proud to host our Nominate A Neighbour Morning Tea, celebrating local heroes who make a real difference. Kristy Hurley was recognised for her compassion as a social worker, James ‘Buck’ McFarlane for his work with the blind and low-vision community, and Narelle Bryson for her everyday acts of kindness. These individuals reflect the heart of Sporties and the community we’re proud to be part of.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to be launching our very first Future Focus: Youth Career Fair this September. We understand how daunting life after school can be. That’s why we’re bringing together local businesses and services to help young people in our community explore career pathways and feel empowered about their future.

And in more good news for our younger generation, we’re incredibly proud to introduce the Sporties Junior Legends program. Created to help more kids get active and involved in the sport they love, this initiative provides a $50 voucher towards junior sporting registrations when families sign their child up as a junior member of the Club. It’s our way of supporting grassroots sport and investing in the future of our local legends—one little champion at a time.

None of these milestones would be possible without the continued support and passion of our Members, our dedicated Board, our hardworking management team and, of course, our incredible staff.

The future is bright at Sporties, and I look forward to what the rest of 2025 will bring.

Sporties Secures

A New Era Begins: Sporties Expands with Major Land Purchase

Moorebank Sports Club (Sporties) is proud to announce the successful finalisation of its land purchase at Hammondville Park — a monumental step in securing the Club’s long-term future.

Following the exchange of contracts in October 2024, the subdivision process has now been completed, and Sporties has officially acquired an additional 16,995 sqm of land. This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, giving the Club the opportunity to grow, enhance our offerings, and continue delivering exceptional facilities and services to the community.

With the acquisition complete, Sporties is no longer landlocked and now holds the potential to expand its footprint. The Board and Management have already commenced planning discussions with consultants and architects to explore future development opportunities.

As part of our commitment to the local community and sporting groups, Sporties will ensure ample parking and will work closely with sporting codes to design facilities that meet the needs of both players and members alike.

Sporties Chairman Frank Griffin said:

“This is a landmark day for Moorebank Sports Club and the wider community. We’ve secured the future of Sporties and created the opportunity to grow with our members and meet the needs of our local area. Thank you to Liverpool City Council for recognising the value in this opportunity, to our members for their continued support, and to the Board and Management for their efforts in bringing this vision to life.”

We’re proud to be writing the next chapter in Sporties’ story — and this is just the beginning.

HONOURING

Robert Fleeton Awarded Medal of the Order of Australia

Moorebank Sports Club is proud to announce that former President Robert Fleeton has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honors List for his outstanding service to junior sport and the local community.

Robert Fleeton, or Bob as he was more affectionately known, was the driving force behind the construction of Moorebank Sports Club. Bob was always dedicated to grassroots sport in Moorebank, Wattle Grove, Holsworthy and Hammondville areas. Bob’s commitment began when he started volunteering at the Moorebank Rams Junior Rugby League Club during the 1980s and served as President of the Rugby League code. As President of the Moorebank Rams, Bob dedicated his time, energy, and resources to creating pathways for young athletes to thrive.

During his time at the Moorebank Rams, Bob joined the Board of the governing body Moorebank Sports Club Ltd and was elected President in 1991. He continued to serve as President until 2019.

Bob was instrumental in the construction of the Club in 1994, spending countless hours meeting builders, financers, lawyers and turning a vacant block of land into a thriving community Club. He achieved this through sheer determination, personal sacrifice, and tireless leadership. Bob volunteered his time, achieving no financial benefit for his service, simply doing it because “it was the right thing to do”.

Thanks to Bob’s work, the Club has grown into the cornerstone of the community. In addition to creating a place where members meet, drink and enjoy themselves, Moorebank Sports Club has funded millions of dollars into charities and local community sport Today, because of this over 2,000 junior players call Hammondville Park home. None of this would be possible without Bob’s determination and leadership.

Unfortunately, Bob passed away in August 2024 leaving behind a legacy which will endure for many generations to come.

Bob and his wife Lynne were regular fixtures in the community and although they are no longer with us their presence is felt throughout the Club. The Medal of the Order of Australia is a tribute to Bob’s hard work, dedication and vision.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all of Bob’s family and join our members in celebrating this recognition of his life’s work.

Thank you, Bob. Your legacy will live on.

On June 19th, members of the Sporties management team and board proudly attended the annual Club & Community Awards night, where we were honoured to be named finalists in two categories — Social Inclusion for our “Care for a Walk?” initiative in partnership with Georges River Life Care, and Mental Wellbeing for our ongoing support of Miracle Babies Foundation.

It was an inspiring evening spent among clubs from across NSW, all united by a shared commitment to making a real difference in their communities. The night served as a powerful reminder of the vital role clubs play — not just as venues, but as support networks, advocates, and changemakers.

From helping fund a food rescue van to deliver hampers to local families, to providing critical mental health support for parents of premature and sick newborns, Sporties is proud to stand alongside these incredible organisations and be part of something bigger.

Honouring Our History

The

land on which Moorebank Sports Club proudly stands today is steeped in rich military history.

During the early 20th century, the surrounding area—particularly Holsworthy—played a significant role in supporting Australia’s legendary Light Horse Brigade through its crucial remount depots.

Remount depots were vital military facilities, responsible for training, caring for, and pairing horses with soldiers before they were deployed to the front lines. Holsworthy became home to one of Australia’s largest and most important remount depots, providing a steady supply of fit, trained horses to the Light Horse regiments during World War I. The landscape, transport access, and scale of operations made it a natural location for such a key role in military logistics.

The Australian Light Horse units were mounted infantry known for their courage, endurance, and daring manoeuvres—most famously, their heroic charge at Beersheba in 1917. While these victories are celebrated, it’s also important to honour the foundation behind their success—training grounds like Holsworthy and the people who kept the gears of war turning at home.

Today, Moorebank Sports Club honours that enduring legacy through its Lighthorse Kitchen. Our restaurant is named in tribute to the Light Horse troops and the historical significance of the land we occupy. Our recent renovations drew inspiration from this heritage, incorporating military themes and storytelling throughout the venue to preserve and showcase this proud chapter of Australia’s past.

We are also incredibly proud to now display an authentic Light Horse Brigade slouch hat in our restaurant. This special piece was donated by the City of Liverpool RSL Sub-Branch and presented to us by long-time member, James Sprice. The hat features the iconic emu plume—affectionately known as the “Kangaroo Feather”—a symbol that has become synonymous with the Light Horse.

According to legend, the tradition began after the death of a pet emu belonging to officers Major Percy Ricardo and Captain Harry Chauvel. Two stockmen tucked a few of the bird’s feathers into their slouch hats. When questioned about the unique adornment, the larrikin soldiers claimed they were “Kangaroo Feathers”—a playful joke that stuck. Over 100 years on, the emu plume remains a powerful symbol of the courage and character of Australia’s mounted soldiers.

At Moorebank Sports Club, we are honoured to preserve and share this proud legacy with our members and community. Through our name, our design, and the stories we tell, we remain connected to the spirit of service, mateship, and history that defines the Light Horse and our region.

Celebrating 10 years at Sporties!

In April, we proudly celebrated a very special milestone — 10 years of Cassie!

Cassie began her journey with us as floor and bar staff, and over the years, her dedication, positive attitude, and strong work seen her move through various roles, eventually stepping into a management position within the club.

Always ready with a smile and a story, Cassie brings warmth, energy, and a genuine love for her work that doesn’t go unnoticed. She is a hard worker, a team player, and truly an asset to the Sporties family.

We are incredibly fortunate to have had Cassie as part of our team for the past decade, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for her.

To celebrate the occasion, we sat down with Cassie to reflect on her journey, favourite memories, and what Sporties means to her.

When did you start at Sporties, and how old were you?

I started at Sporties in April 2015 when I was 19 years old.

What made you get a job at Sporties?

I had a friend from high school who talked about how flexible and great it was working at the club so I decided to apply, little did I know that 10 years later I would still be part of this great team!

How has your role evolved over the last 10 years?

I started working as a general bar and floor attendant before commencing some cross-training in reception, safe and gaming approximately a year later. Following some experience in these areas - I progressed into a team leader role and a relief customer service manager before being promoted to a full time Customer Service Manager in 2020. I worked in this full time role for approximately 3 years where I worked on a community and engagement portfolio and received/attended  extensive professional development courses, such as leadership and management courses, excel skills and other customer service training. After a few years of development and experience, I decided to return to university to complete my postgraduate degree and am now currently working across all areas of the club and occasionally completing the weekly staff roster.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

What I enjoy most about working at Sporties is the teamwork - it is really enjoyable working with so many different people that are also your friends as well as being able to count on them to get the job done and deliver awesome customer service and products.

Is there a particular memory/event/proud moment you can recall in the last 10 years?

A proud moment that stands out would be reaching my 10 year service. I'm pretty proud to say that I have maintained being a well respected, valued employee for so long, and proud to have progressed and developed so many skills in that time. This is also a testament to the great workplace that Sporties is.

Favourite meal from Lighthorse Kitchen to get you through a shift?

Favourite and go-to meal from the Lighthorse Kitchen is the Cashew Chicken Stir Fry - always hits the spot on those long, late night shifts.

What cocktail would you recommend?

I would recommend a Classic Mojito - we've always got fresh mint at the bar with the recipe hitting the perfect ratio, and can never go wrong with a classic!

Catching Up

In June, we caught up with Zoe Georgallis, our very first Bob Fleeton Scholarship recipient, to hear about her first year at un and the impact the scholarship has had on her journey so far...

Describe your start to university life? Consider the new opportunities, the life adjustments etc, tell us a little about your j University life has really opened my eyes to the opportunities available with the resources and connections that uni has provid including real life experiences such as developing important connections with the industry early on.

My experience so far has enabled me to have greater independence with not only my academics but also individual responsibiliti as its on me to organise my everyday life and to ensure I am applying myself to my full capability. For example, we had a group challenge for my management skills class, in which my group really applied ourselves to tackle the challenge and were recognised as final the challenge for our efforts.

What are you enjoying most about the course and what is your favourite subject so far?

What I have enjoyed the most is being given the opportunity to hear from individuals with real life work experience in the sports industry and the advice they had to offer to gain real life experience starting early on through work experience and volunteering.

A subject that has gone above and beyond in doing this is Sport and Society, making it my favourite subject particularly because of the way it looks at the link between the impact that sport can have on society to create positive change and the ways that sport can be shaped to achieve this.

How has having the scholarship as a support for your studies allowed you to have a positive experience and focus on your studies?

The scholarship has had a major positive impact on my ability to have greater time to invest into studying for my subjects allowing me to focus and truly gain the most I can academically from my course. Whilst also taking a huge amount of stress away by allowing me to to push myself to my best potential without having heavy work commitments on top of NPL football sporting commitments to balance with my studies.

What about your football interest, how is that going?

It is my first year experiencing Senior Women's Football at an NPL elite level and have enjoyed the fast pace and technical level of the competition. I’ve continued to push myself with technical skills and performance development, including improving mental and physical capabilities, focused on striving to continue to develop and progress at an elite level.

As it is halfway through the season, I feel that I have developed as a player with the help of my coach and my team's cohesion and camaraderie on and off the field, which no doubt has also contributed greatly to our success so far as we rise to the higher expectations of elite football.

SPORTING CODE

Moorebank Soccer Club

The winter 2025 season is well and truly in full swing and Moorebank Soccer Club is a busy and bustling place to be.

We are proud of all our teams and we are seeing some very encouraging results. In our U13 to seniors age group MSC participates in 35 leagues with 24 of our teams in finals contention at this stage of the competition. Our U10 to U12 age group continues to be our largest with 46 teams participating in the Southern Districts Development League. On a Saturday you’ll often see four half sized fields operating on the old Fields 3 and 4, with a buzz of players, parents and spectators. Our littlest members are continuing their season as well and it is lovely to see their happy faces on a Saturday morning on Field 1.

Football 4 All is continuing its success story. The children are loving their Saturday morning sessions and its inspiring to see them progress. This month they received personalised MSC jackets to wear on these cold winter mornings and they were all very excited to be wearing the blue and white.

MSC has been very busy this year with plenty of events and activities on offer for our members. In May we celebrated Female Football Week with a movie night, an M-League walk out with our young female players, pink hair spray and everything girly. Mother’s Day was celebrated with a raffle for which we were lucky enough to receive many generous donations for prizes.

Our business as usual activities continue throughout the season and we have already completed team photos and are now in the process of finalising our annual chocolate drive fundraiser. The funds raised are vital to providing wonderful presentation days for all our players. Our merchandise stall has been very successful this season with many of our members updating their supporter merch or purchasing their first items.

This year we are supporting Sporties with the Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies for Brain Cancer campaign by selling the official beanies in our canteen. Thank you to all our members that have purchased a beanie for this important cause.

Finally, Moorebank Soccer Club would like to thank Sporties for their continued support into the 2025 season. Our members are benefiting every weekend from your contribution, and we look forward to the second half of our season with, hopefully, great results.

Moorebank Cricket Club

Moorebank Cricket Club recently celebrated another fantastic season, hosting both their Mini/Junior and Senior Presentation Events at Sporties throughout May and June. With over 250 attendees across the two presentations, both nights were a great success and a wonderful way to wrap up the 2024/25 season. A heartfelt thank you to Sporties for providing the venue and support, and a special thanks to Jeff, Ken, and Robyn for attending and representing the Club.

Looking ahead, registrations are now open for the upcoming 2025/26 cricket season. Junior and Senior competitions will commence in mid-September, with Mini (Blasters) starting in early October.

Families are encouraged to take advantage of the Sporties Junior Legends program, where all Mini and Junior players can receive a $50 voucher to put towards their registration fee simply by signing up as a Junior Member at Sporties.

Registrations can be completed online via: moorebankcricket.com.au/registrations

The Club is also excited to announce two upcoming school holiday cricket clinics, both to be held at Hammondville Reserve:

• Junior School Holiday Clinic with Tahmid Islam (Ages 12+) – 9 & 10 July

• Blasters Pre-season Cricket NSW Clinic (Ages 8–12) – Running mid-July to mid-August (exact dates TBC)

▪ This program will include a special appearance from a Sydney Thunder player during the final session.

In addition to preparing for the new season, Moorebank Cricket Club is working closely with Sporties Board Members to explore new initiatives aimed at increasing female participation in cricket. This important step aligns with the Club’s ongoing commitment to building an inclusive and community-focused sporting environment.

JUNIOR CRICKET

Moorebank Cricket Club Wraps Up a Stellar 2024/25 Season

The summer cricket season officially concluded on Sunday 30 March 2025, and what a season it was for Moorebank Cricket Club — filled with strong growth, exciting competition, and premiership success. The club celebrated the end of the season with the 2024/25 Junior Presentation, held at Moorebank Sports Club in May. With an estimated 200 guests in attendance, it was a fantastic afternoon of recognition and community spirit as players, families, and coaches gathered to acknowledge the dedication and achievements of our young cricketers.

This year saw Moorebank Cricket Club grow significantly across all age groups. We fielded 4 teams and 42 players in the Minis/Cricket Blast (Under 7 & Under 9), 7 teams and 74 players in the Juniors (Under 10–16), and 5 teams with 75 players in the Seniors (Open Age). The club is also proud to have increased female participation, with 9 female players joining this season. In support of this growth, a girls-only training camp was led by Gaurav Joshi in October, encouraging skill development and confidence for young female cricketers.

On the field, the club celebrated a number of standout performances. Four teams made it to their respective Grand Finals, with three securing premiership wins in the Fairfield-Liverpool Cricket Association. Under 13 Blue capped off an undefeated season with a dominant Grand Final win — their third consecutive undefeated premiership. The Under 14 team clinched victory in a thrilling final that went down to the last ball, delivering their best bowling and fielding performance of the season and earning their fourth premiership in five years. In the Seniors competition, 1st/2nd Grade White led the ladder all season and finished strong with a premiership win following a powerful bowling display. Although U9 White narrowly missed out by just one run in their Grand Final, the team showed incredible promise and has plenty to look forward to next season. Several other teams, including U9 Blue and 6th Grade White Seniors, reached the semi-finals, further highlighting the depth and talent throughout the club.

Congratulations to all players for their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship throughout the season. Thank you to our incredible coaches, managers, and volunteers who continue to go above and beyond to make each season a success. Moorebank Cricket Club has much to be proud of as we reflect on 2024/25 — and even more to look forward to in the season ahead.
