Marching Chiefs Qualify for STATE! BY MEGHAN HUT TENMEYER AND HAILEY BRANDT Which group of Thunderbird students meets every morning, ready to learn, work hard, both physically and mentally, and make new friends? The Marching Chiefs, that’s who! Under the guidance of Director Kris Hutson, and Drum Majors Sophie Holder and Roscoe Gillum, this group of 87 THS students meet at 6:30 almost every morning, rain or shine, to perfect their performances. All of this hard work has paid off. The Marching Chiefs competed in their first contest of the season on October 1st at the Prescott “Mile High” Marching Invitational. The band scored high enough to qualify for the State Marching Festival on November 5th. Special recognition honors were also awarded to the band in the areas of General Effect, Auxiliary, and Musical Performance. You will only have two more chances to see the Marching Chiefs in action at a football game this year. They will be performing fun stand tunes and their pieces from KA, the Cirque du Soleil show on October 7th when the Chiefs take on Shadow Mountain and then again for the last home game of the season on October 21st again Cactus Shadows. So, the next time you’re at a Thunderbird High School football game, don’t head to get a snack during halftime. Sit down and enjoy the Marching Chief’s performance instead!

Such comradery is an iconic piece of the high school experience and it’s no different at Thunderbird, however, the community that rallies around these sports teams is especially spirited and particularly different. “The seniors this year spent time planning and organizing ways to bring energy to the games. [The student section] really comes together and rallies at the games” explained Andrew Hoiby, a leader of the Thunderbird High School student section and senior. Often time the student section packs the stands for all sorts of games, including volleyball games, basketball games, and even the occasional baseball game to support fellow students. Alongside this spirited community, the Chief family is also home to many exceptional talents, with many students receiving distinguished awards. Caitlin Hooker, an upcoming writer and poet at THS explains, “Thunderbird is a community of overachievers.” Stephan Graham - national merit scholar, Juliana Williams and Angel Mendoza - national hispanic merit scholars, and Nicole Crews - future physicians and medical scientist award to name a few. While THS boasts an impressive academic record the arts program is also a particularly tight knit and excelling department, Matthew Theut, theater veteran relates, “First week of school, freshman year I knew I loved theater. The people were instant friends and the class extremely fun.” Thunderbird High School is a vibrant village in the nation’s 13th largest metro and there’s no sign that this special community will be disappearing anytime soon.

Trapped In Moon Valley LET TER FROM THE EDITOR I was late getting this article in to our designer. It’s so hard to sit inside, tied to a desk during this time of year. I want to be everywhere, right now: Northern Arizona, South of the border and right here in Phoenix as well. Open the windows and door…grab your hats, hiking boots, binoculars, 4 wheelers and get outdoors. The temperatures have dropped, the trees are changing colors, and the deserts and trails are filled with the many outdoorsmen and women reaping the benefits of this wonderful state we live in. I do take my advice quite literally, and enjoyed a wonderful day of great friends, wild adventures, spectacular scenery, the famous Crown King Saloon’s hamburger, sweet fudge and the fresh outdoors this weekend. The group departed from the Lake Pleasant recreation area on State Highway 74, about 35 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, and made our way up to Crown King on the back roads. Along the way, you’ll pass several abandoned mines, collapsing cabins and ghost towns. If you choose this route, which is my favorite, you must have a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, good rough-country driving skills and should also carry a Prescott National Forest Map. Be prepared to spend at least 5-10 hours, with plenty of water and food. I must mention, there is another way to reach Crown King, from I-17 for those without the 4-wheel drive vehicle. This time we also made a side trip and stopped by Horsethief Basin Lake, which is a reservoir in the Bradshaw Mountains and the Prescott National Forest. Horsethief Basin Lake/Resort is a park facility of the City of Phoenix, which was built in 1936−1937 with assistance from the public works administration and civilian conservations corps. They say in the early 1930s: Phoenix, like the rest of the nation, was caught firmly in the grips of the Great Depression, and the people in the “Valley” area needed a nearby spot to rest, relax and forget their troubles. I think you will agree with the photos, it is a beautiful spot. Happy fall…if you are looking for some great ideas for more outings in our state, I encourage you to also follow one of my favorites; Roger Naylor, a travel writer in Arizona, on facebook, or his web-site, he will take you on some of the most magnificent places in Arizona. And as always, we would love to publish and share some of your adventures. Sorry for the late submission….but I say: Work Hard, Play Harder…

Halloween in the Valley B Y D E B R A S TA R K , CO U N C I LW O M A N As the weather gets cooler here in Phoenix, there are even more opportunities to get to know your neighbors and to celebrate fall holidays safely within your community. G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) is a day for Arizona to join forces and promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. G.A.I.N. showcases the importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight for a safer Arizona. On G.A.I.N. Day neighborhoods are invited to come together and make their community a safer, better place to live. G.A.I.N. Day 2016 in Phoenix is on Saturday, October 15. I look forward to attending G.A.I.N. Day events in Phoenix Council District 3. Shortly after G.A.I.N. Day, Phoenix neighborhoods will celebrate Halloween. The Phoenix Police Department has compiled a list of helpful safety tips for the holiday: Guidelines for parents and trick or treaters • All children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. • Costumes should not be restrictive or hinder vision. They should be visible at night. • Parents should inspect treats before children consume them. • Only well-lit homes should be approached when trick or treating. • Adults and children should carry flashlights. • Pedestrians should follow traffic rules. • Drivers should be more aware when driving through a neighborhood on Halloween. Guidelines for those who pass out treats • Ensure that your home is well lit if you intend to pass out treats. • Be wary of those who approach your home seeking monetary donations. If you cannot verify that the solicitation is legitimate, do not participate. A few extra points • Older children should travel in groups and remain in familiar neighborhoods. • Adhere to the hours for trick or treating as established by your community. • If you observe suspicious activity in your neighborhood, call the Police. Outdoor Season is Here! It’s said we have two seasons in Phoenix, with the second being autumn, winter and spring all combined and it is here. This is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, and also a time to revisit safety. Daylight hours are shrinking so to be safer, wear bright colors, reflective clothing and/or carry a light to be visible. It’s also a good time to do a home security survey. First, remember to close your garage door when you are not outside. Our Security service reminds an average of 2 residents a day to close their garage. Additional safety tips for your residence: • Light your yard, install motion lights, trim back trees & bushes to eliminate hiding places • Connect a few indoor lights to a timer • Keep doors & windows locked; install / use your security system • Install a locking mailbox (available at hardware stores) • Lock all car doors if parked outside, remove valuables and your garage remote; a key chain sized garage door remote is better • Sign up for our MVNA security service (costs a mere ~25 ¢ per day!) The most important is for all of us to be aware of our surroundings, especially when people look out of place or maybe doing something suspicious. If you see something that doesn’t look right, report it to Crime Stop (602) 262-6151 or call 911; they welcome your calls. After reporting, share via a post to NextDoor. If you live in Moon Valley proper, MVNA does contract a local security company to patrol our neighborhood. Participation is voluntary and affordable at $90 per year (less than $2/week!). In addition to regular patrols (reachable by cell), they man a call center, perform daily vacation house checks, and can quickly respond to an issue calling in emergency services as warranted. Contact MVNA via our website to subscribe to security services. Last- just in case you were on a long, long vacation and missed all the news – there’s an election happening this November. In the 60’s Phoenix was one of the many cities around the United States where your bicycle could be licensed or stamped for identification in case of being lost or stolen. The old Phoenix plates were white with black letters and numbers. Newer plates were dark blue with raised white letters and numbers. The $1 cost was relatively cheap at your nearest Fire Station. Friendly fireman stamped numbers on your bicycle frame and then a metal plate with the same numbers was affixed to your bicycle. I remember riding my bicycle as a kid when a fire truck came by. A fireman leaned out asking where my license was. I had a lot of bicycles even before I had the bicycle shop so $1 per bicycle was a lot of money to me. I ignored plating my bicycles. Plates ended and were replaced with stickers. Stickers were replaced with registration with the city by mail. Registration for your bicycle ended long ago. Thus your bicycle stands alone with no one able to identify it. You can mark your bicycle, or put a note with your name in the seat post. It is always very important to write down the serial number that is stamped on it at the factory. Keep it in safe place in case your bicycle is lost or stolen.

Thanks to great community support, Thunderbird High School’s (THS) 13th Annual Golf Classic and Auction Event was an overwhelming success with almost $25,000 raised to support the entire student body and staff at Thunderbird. One hundred golfers participated in the Golf Classic held at Moon Valley Country Club on September 25th. Congratulations to the winning foursome, John Souza, Rod Tomita, Brian Pavlet and Rob Hammer. An additional 100 guests attended the “Smells like TEAM Spirit” Auction Event at the Solheim residence on October 1st. Event Co-Chairs Alice Starzinski, Kristen Solheim and Karen Huttenmeyer, as well as the Thunderbird High School Chief Parent Association (CPA) thank the community, alumni, parents, students and THS administration for their continued support of this event which annually raises $20-$30,000 to help fund classroom and campus needs. Continued support of this, and other CPA fundraisers, strengthens our local school and our community. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s event, tentatively scheduled for late September, 2017.

Paint: The most effective way to transform any room is with wall and ceiling color. If an all-over color seems too boring consider the following paint effects - spattering, sponging, stippling, ragging, and graining; stenciling a simple all-over pattern such as stars, dots, squares; painting a multi-color border where the ceiling meets the wall; painting a pattern on the walls such as vertical stripes. Broad stripes can be painted easily and quickly using paint rollers and the correct masking tape. Paint effects are often best in subtle near-shades. For the amateur, mistakes will be less obvious and the final effect more sophisticated than bold contrasts. Always use a washable paint finish. Wall Covering: While wallpaper for a large room can be expensive, look for inspiration in cheap sources of paper and other collage materials. With ordinary wallpaper paste and a willingness to experiment, you can paper a wall with almost anything. Pages from comics, sheets of newspaper, maps, menus, playbills, gift wrap, tissue paper or sheets of music all produce lively and graphic all-over patterning. This type of treatment should be used with discretion, but works well in small rooms rather than large expanses of wall. A simple border is also effective if teamed with a coordinating wall color. Consider wall decals for a simple, easy, colorful and fun way to address walls! Bed Hangings: Drape a bed hanging overhead to create the effect of a canopy. Fabric side drapery panels on either side of the bed can be fun…..by your choice of fabric, the theme can be either masculine or feminine. Headboards: Create a colorful headboard by stapling fabric to a piece of padded plywood. Fun shapes can be easily cut with a minimum amount of tools. This is one of my favorite ways to add an interesting theme to a children’s room. Consider purchasing a platform bed frame with a bottom storage drawer for toys. Wall Décor: If you are looking for splashes of color, paint pre-stretched canvases with colors that coordinate with your scheme. Mix the sizes and shapes to create dynamic patterns. Group these together or separately. To give your children a place to display whatever they want, without damaging the walls, cover cork or other tack boards with a colorful fabric. This element also adds their personality to the room! Rugs: Area rugs are perfect for injecting dramatic color and pattern into a room. Junk Shopping: Makeshift furniture is not merely for those short of cash. Even in well-heeled households there is often room for simple pieces rigged up with basic materials. You can revamp old pieces with style by putting a fresh face on tired tables, chests and chairs; and, jazz up junk with paint, fabrics, stenciling and aniline dye staining. Accessories: Say yes to oversize floor pillows. Browse department, discount stores and the internet for coordinated bedding, accessories and art objects. There are some amazing finds if you think “out of the box” and mix and match! Financial professionals like me are often guilty of focusing too much on the numbers and technical solutions to clients’ financial plans. There are some things that are even more important and basic to understand, before we can dig into the numbers. What are your goals? Goals are the measurable things that you want to accomplish. Some examples are “We want to retire in 2025 and have sustainable income of $5,000 per month for the rest of our lives” or “We want to buy a cabin in Flagstaff for $200,000 in 2022”. An important factor for goals is that they meet the acronym SMAC. They need to be specific, not vague and general. They need to be measurable so you can tell if you are progressing on schedule. They have to be actually achievable – not so far-fetched they could never be accomplished. Finally, they need to be consistent with your personal values. What are you passionate about? These are the things that are not able to be measured and they vary greatly by individual. What are the things that really define your life? Is it some charitable drive or service? Is it your children and grandchildren? It is very important for you to understand and articulate these and a good financial advisor can help you. Further, I do not know how an advisor could fully help you unless he understands them, as well. What are your struggles? You need to have clarity regarding the things that keep you from achieving your goals and following your passions. It is very hard to overcome something that is in your way if you have not clearly defined it. Again, your advisor should both be able to help you with this process and desire to know what they are for you as well. The Good News: You CAN Improve Bad Breath BY AARON VERBARG, DDS Call it what you like…dragon breath, melting the moustache, leaking some limburger, dog breath, polluting the local environment…the list goes on. No one wants to hear “You have bad breath”. It hits the room before you do…HALITOSIS. Halitosis…whether we are talking humans or pets, bad breath is a big deal. Commonly known as bad breath, halitosis is an embarrassing health condition that affects approximately 30% of people around the world. Regardless of the term used, it is the presence of a foul-smelling odor that seems to come from the oral cavity. Offensive breath tells us that something is out of balance. It’s a medical condition that lowers self-esteem and affects everyday life and personal relationships. People with recurring bad breath often lose self-confidence. What causes bad breath? The origins are not mysterious and may include: 1) Poor dental hygiene – Inadequate oral care causes bacterial buildup, known as plaque, on teeth and gums. The resulting gum disease enables proteins from bleeding gums and diseased oral tissue to fuel odor-causing bacteria. Tooth decay and poorly fitting or dirty dentures can also contribute to the problem. 2) Foods – Halitosis can be exacerbated by certain foods such as onions, garlic, dairy, meat, and fish. Refined and processed sugars also provide a food source for bacteria resulting in an ideal breeding environment. 3) Tongue bacteria – Bacterial growth on the tongue seen as a whitish film can contribute to terrible breath. 4) Dry mouth – Dry mouth provides the perfect environment for bacterial reproduction. Saliva is not present to wash away bacteria. A few common underlying causes include smoking, drinking alcohol, snoring, and long periods of speaking. “Morning breath” is caused by lack of saliva during sleep. 5) Illness and disease – Halitosis is rarely associated with life-threatening diseases. However, infections in the respiratory system, stomach problems, liver disease, and diabetes are all potential health problems that can contribute to bad breath.
Whatever the cause, treatment involves correcting the underlying issue. Preventing halitosis is always easier than treating it. Easy ways to prevent bad breath include: 1) Brushing and flossing after every meal reduces odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. See your dentist at least two times a year for a professional cleaning. 2) Use a tongue scraper or toothbrush to remove tongue bacteria. 3) Hydrate by drinking plenty of water to keep your mouth moist preventing growth of bacteria. If you are experiencing mouth dryness, your dentist can recommend a saliva substitute to moisten your mouth throughout the day. 4) Chew the right thing by watching what you eat. Chew sugarfree gum after to freshen breath and keep saliva flowing. 5) Clean your dentures at least once a day. 6) Stop smoking because smokers are at higher risk of periodontal disease and dry mouth. 7)Use an alcohol-free mouthwash. Mouthwash containing alcohol is the exact opposite of what should be done because alcohol is a drying agent. Although everyone gets bad breath sometimes, if you have bad breath a lot it may be evidence of a deeper underlying problem and you may need to visit your dentist or doctor. Sometimes you only have one chance to make a good impression. You want people to remember your confidence and your smarts…not your breath. So practice the basics and keep a pack of sugar-free gum handy.

WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER You're not getting enough sleep, night after night, but you continue to push it, hoping it won't do any harm. Then cold season hits, and you find yourself getting even less sleep because you come down with more colds than usual. It's a vicious cycle you can't seem to escape: lack of sleep, cold, lack of sleep, another cold. Is there a connection? Definitely, according to a recent study that suggests people who sleep less than six hours a night are more likely to catch the common cold than people who get more sleep nightly. In the study, published in the journal Sleep, researchers tracked 164 men and women for a week, monitoring their sleep patterns. At the same time, they exposed all study participants to the rhinovirus, better known as the common cold. Results showed that while only 18 percent of participants who more than six hours nightly contracted a cold, 39 percent who slept less than six hours did. On average, sleeping less than six hours a night made participants more than four times more likely to contract the rhinovirus compared to participants who slept seven hours or more. In an article on CNN.com, Shalini Paruthi, director of the Pediatric Sleep and Research Center at Saint Louis University, summed up the research findings: "It looks like an adequate amount of sleep allows our body to mount a better immune response." Baby boomers have realized that in order to remain in their homes, certain changes must be made to accommodate aging in place. These types of showers are only limited to space and budget. While smaller areas can be turned into curb less showers, a larger space makes for easier movement and accessibility for a wheelchair when assistance is necessary. It is recommended that an aging in place specialist help you design your new barrier free shower. There are special concerns when designing any curb less shower. Design must take into account moisture control, floor construction so the water slopes to the drain while maintaining the barrier free design, shower head and water control placement, benches and grab bars. Floor materials must also be addressed to avoid any slips and falls. As part of aging in place we need to make sure a person can enjoy their later years by remaining in their home. On the other paw, Digger is wise and distinguished at the age of eight and the Miniature Pinscher acts as though he’s only a day away from retirement. Digger is a dog who lives by-the-book and likes to play it safe by occupy someone’s lap or being toted around under your arm. When he’s feeling frisky however, he will play a few rounds of fetch. Digger often beats Taz to the punch but allows his Pomeranian comrade the honor of taking the ball back to their master. The two dogs have spent most of their lives together and practically know each other as well as a married couple but ended up at the Arizona Humane Society after their owner passed away. Taz and Digger are on the Buddy System and are available at the Sunnyslope Campus located at 9226 N. 13th Avenue in Phoenix. National Stuttering Awareness Month As the autumn months approach many people look forward to cool weather or their favorite holidays; however, for roughly three million Americans, October brings another event, National Stuttering Awareness Day. National Stuttering Awareness Day falls on the 22nd of every October. Stuttering (also referred to as stammering) is communication disorder in which there are repetitions, prolongations and stoppages in speech. There is not one definite cause of stuttering, however there are thought to be three main contributing factors. The first is genetics, about 60% of people who stutter have a family member who does as well. Another is child development, children who have other speech and language problems are more likely to stutter. The third is neurophysiology, recent research states that people who stutter process speech and language differently, so that may be correlated to stuttering. About five percent of children will go through a period of stuttering, three fourths will grow out of it, leaving one percent stuttering for life. Of the world’s population, 70 million people stutter. There is no one instant cure for stuttering, but speech therapy can be sought to help minimize the stigma of stuttering although it is rare for therapy to cure a stutter. Good speech therapy will focus on acceptance and not avoidance of a stutter. There are several well-known stutterers, a few examples are, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Vice President Joe Biden, the voice of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones, Emily Blunt and NFL player Darren Sproles. One of the most well-known stuttering support groups is the National Stuttering Association (NSA). The NSA has numerous chapters across the country that hold monthly support group sessions for people who stutter. Every July, the NSA holds a national conference that rotates cities every year. In 2017 it will be in Dallas, Texas. The annual conference offers four days of informative and helpful workshops as well as workshops for kids, tweens and teens that help them with school situations and self-confidence. I have stuttered for my entire life, have been to five annual NSA conferences and recently joined the Teen Advisory Council. Is Real Estate in Moon Valley Slow? B Y S H A R O N H E L L A N D, A S S O C I AT E B R O K E R Real estate in Moon Valley is not slow but is slower than normal as far as our Real Estate market is concerned. We are selling fewer homes since there are fewer homes on the market to sell. Usually there are over 220 homes in a any given month in Moon Valley. There are always at least 120 homes that are Active on the market, 30-40 in under contract or pending status and at least 60-70 closed homes per month. We have an active Real Estate market in Moon Valley. Currently there are only 76 homes on the market, that is at least 50 less Active listings & 50 less sold than in a normal inventory month for us to sell. I tell potential Sellers and Buyers the same thing about Moon Valley. There are always Buyers looking for a home in Moon Valley! They have been looking for a period of time, they watch everything that comes on the market and they are the first ones in the door to see the house if they like it and if it is priced right, it will sell right away. They are also smart and if the house is overpriced they will not even make a low ball offer on a home and it will sit unsold for months. The homes that sell fast in Moon Valley, and I am talking less than 5 days are homes that are presented properly. What does properly mean? It means that the Sellers had an agent who knows the area, prepared the Seller with proper pricing, prepared them with the knowledge of what to expect in the selling process, and prepared their home for Professional Pictures & Virtual tours. Experienced agent’s properly presents on the MLS with all the right information in the right place and have the ability to market the home not only with a seasoned eye to price the home properly but to have the knowledge of what works and what does not with marketing! I often hear from agents who have homes that are listed, which have been on the market for months, that are down the street from one of my listings that just sold in 3 days and want to know why their listing is not selling. There is always a reason why. First of all, it was overpriced, they have had 3 price reductions in 90 days and still no offers when my listing went on the market, sold and closed in 30 days.
I can tell you that the home that did not sell had a pit in the living room, Buyers either love the “Pit” or hate the “Pit” but I would be willing to bet 95% hate it. What is a pit? It is a sunken area in the living room or Family room lowered to have seating around a fireplace or maybe a bar area that back in the 80’s some home builder’s thought was Sexy just like those sunken Garden bathtubs. I have had houses with “Pits” with Sellers who love the Pit, and until they fill in the pit and redo the flooring, it is not going to sell over another home that is listed, period. The Seller will say “Well, if someone loves the house why wouldn’t they just fix it?” Buyers automatically think it is very expensive and do not have the time or the contractor to Fix the pit! The last time I had a Seller who had a home with a “Pit”, I told them on day 1 before listing the house to fill in the “Pit.” I received all the same pushback you would expect. They truly loved it and thought someone else would also. After 60 days on the market they finally listened and filled in the Pit. It was $1200 to get rid of the Pit on this particular home and the Pit + the step down in the living room which made it look like a runway to get to the kitchen! The house sold 3 days after finishing the flooring!

Moon Mountain School Needs More Volunteer Tutors B Y Y V O N N E K U D R AY- B A R A B A N Sue Brown, principal of Moon Mountain School (MM), acknowledges that teachers cannot always accomplish everything they would like to with each student. "There just isn't enough time to concentrate on every student individually and focus on their special needs. That's where OASIS comes in." OASIS is a nationwide effort to recruit tutors who work with students at the school property and on their own schedule. The purpose is to develop or improve reading skills for first through sixth grade students. At the present time, there are 35 OASIS tutors volunteering in the Washington School District including four at MM. Prior teaching experience is not required. As an OASIS volunteer starting my twelfth year of helping MM students, I especially like providing that one-to-one attention that some kids often need in order to progress to higher levels. Presently, I have 5 students whom I meet with weekly but some OASIS tutors only have time for one student a week. Generally, each session with a child lasts one hour. Marilyn Majercyk is the MM OASIS Coordinator. "It's a straight-forward process to become a tutor. Fingerprinting and a background check are Washington School District policy. Volunteers can learn the ropes by shadowing another tutor and attending monthly training sessions. The internet is a rich source of free reading enrichment materials. Tutors can choose to work with any number of students during normal school hours and any grade level. It's an ideal activity for retired people." I have personally observed some wonderful success stories. One of my favorites occurred last year. I worked with a fifth grade refugee girl who, at the beginning of the school year, could not speak English. At the end of the school year she was on the honor roll. Now, I'm quick to admit that I didn't motivate her--she was self-motivated. My role was to assist the learning process. What I really like about being an OASIS tutor is observing students' improvement in self-esteem and increase in their abilities as a result of the tutoring. Washington District Recognizes Partners YEC Volunteers Cited at Moon Mountain The classroom partnership between Your Experience Counts and the Washington Elementary School District was one of the programs recognized at the District’s annual Community and Family Engagement (C.A.F.E.) event September 27 at Thunderbird High School. Nearly 400 representatives from businesses, faithbased organizations, nonprofits and parents joined school leaders for the program. Moon Mountain School Principal Sue Brown shared her appreciation for having seven YEC volunteers supporting her students and teachers for the first time this year. YEC, a program of HandsOn Greater Phoenix, and the Washington District formed a partnership two years ago, starting with Orangewood School, to recruit and train volunteers to work with classroom teachers and provide one-on-one and small group interventions. Volunteers with a variety of work experience receive extensive training, including how to support instruction in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). Mike Beardslee, YEC Program Manager, reported that more volunteers are needed for Moon Mountain and Richard E. Miller Schools. “Every volunteer brings unique perspective, interests and passion to the classroom,” Beardslee said. NCL Cooks Up Compassion B Y TAY L O R N I L S E N , C L A S S O F 2 021 National Charity League, Inc., Moon Valley Chapter (NCL, Inc.) cooks up some great meals for teens moving from homelessness to transitional housing at Home Base Youth Services in Central Phoenix. Home Base Youth Services (HBYS) is a home for 18 to 24-year-olds who have aged out of foster care and would otherwise experience homelessness. The vision of HBYS is “No kid sleeps on the streets.” NCL, Inc. mother and daughter teams spend time together preparing meals for the residents. The meals are mostly prepared from scratch and based off of an extremely small budget supplemented by food donations. The residents go to school and/or work and then come home to a “home cooked” meal. In addition to keeping at risk youth off of the streets, the mission of HBYS is to teach at-risk and homeless youth how to live healthy and independent lives. Last year alone, NCL, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter mothers and daughters served 413 hours in the Home Base kitchen. It continues to be a top ten philanthropic choice for the NCL, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter. “I always have a great experience going to work at Home Base,” said Caroline Ludwig (NCL, Inc. Class of 2019). “I like working at this philanthropy because I get to learn new recipes, but most importantly I get to cook food and serve other young adults. I strongly recommend serving at Home Base because it teaches you to be more grateful for what you have in life.” NCL, Inc. is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong mother/daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. I was just uploading homecoming photos, thinking about how thankful I am to have raised my kids in Moon Valley. We have had countless opportunities to learn, grow, and serve with some amazing people! One of the most impactful experiences for my daughter, Anna, and I has been our time in NCL, Inc. As we open our 20th Membership Drive, I have the privilege of extending the invitation to other mothers and daughters. The NCL experience is a six-year journey that begins at the end of sixth grade and continues through high school graduation. The mission of NCL, Inc. is to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. With over 200 chapters across the country, we make an incredible impact! NCL, Inc. is a sponsorship organization. This month, we will begin to reach out to families of girls in the graduating class of 2023 who would value this unique opportunity. On August 23rd, the Phoenix Block Watch Advisory Board (hosted by the Black Mountain Precinct) presented a program called “Active Shooter--Are You Ready?” The Phoenix Police Department is preparing for the unthinkable...a terrorist attack or a personal attack on strangers by an individual. We hope these scenarios do not happen anywhere in Phoenix. But in the case one does take place, the Police Department wants everyone to be trained in what to do to save lives. The training offered was extensive. Most important is to have “presence of mind.” This means knowing to get away from danger by leaving the scene or getting down on the floor or behind solid objects such as file cabinets. A video was shown and written directions from the video were handed out so people can distribute the ideas to friends and neighbors. Such things as blocking entry to your hiding place and locking doors are smart moves. Some of the most important pieces of information were to 1) silence phones, and 2) when police show up, make sure you stay put and raise empty hands with fingers spread. The last thing we want are injuries to victims or bystanders. The last option for potential victims is to attack the perpetrator. This may become necessary or possible if he or she is really close by, but it is not recommended for bystanders to go looking for a shooter. In certain situations a person or persons could throw items at the shooter. People in a shooter situation should try to take in as much information as possible, such as body type, hair color, clothing, vehicle type, and anything else that could help identify a shooter. With guns being so prevalent in our society people often mistake them for protection against real or imagined dangers. The results of shooter incidents so often end up to be tragedies for all involved, including the person out of control. The Police Department has staff trained in negotiating with troubled individuals and can find good help for them. Our police are trying hard to offer the best assistance to citizens that is available. Having procedures that have been developed by thorough evaluations of previous situations helps us to understand what to do and what not to do...like not running up to police officers and hugging them. Police are trained to look at everything in a situation, to think about safety first, and to help triage victims to get immediate help to people who need it the most. We are very lucky to have the benefit of the video and trained police officers as well as increased staffing in Black Mountain precinct. Officers are trained to call in help from other police departments very quickly. Systems are in place for vastly improved communication. We are grateful to know this. The most important factor we must be aware of is to listen to our friends and neighbors. If a person is talking about doing harm to themselves or others, tell someone in authority right away. Don’t wait. In so many cases, this simple act could have saved countless lives. The video is available for viewing by emailing contact@phxblockwatch.org.

Importance of Community Relationships BY D R . PAU L S TA N T O N , S U P E R I N T E N D E N T, W E S D Hello, again! I’m Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. Parent and community engagement are critical to a student’s academic success. When our students and families succeed, our neighborhoods thrive. When it comes to community and parent engagement, WESD is taking a lead role. For example, on September 27, we hosted our Community and Family Engagement (CAFÉ) event. The purpose of the CAFÉ is to promote family and community engagement in the WESD and to develop long term relationships with our partners. Every school invited business, community and faith-based partners to join them at the table to discuss how their partnership will mutually benefit the community and school. Nearly 400 people came together to impact our students and schools. On October 1, we were one of 30 public school districts across Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale and Mesa that participated in Love Our Schools Day. Schools invited teams of volunteers from local churches to team-up on a variety of projects at their sites. Lookout Mountain hosted volunteers from Christ Church of the Valley (CCV) who worked on campus clean-up projects like washing windows and landscaping. At Mountain Sky, representatives from North Hills Church built a structure for an outdoor screen and painted rails and fencing. Our next community engagement opportunity is our first Business Advisory Team (BAT) meeting on October 26th at Great Skate, Chris Camacho, CEO and President of Greater Phoenix Economic Council will be discussing the impact of education on the economy. The $98 million in bond money, if approved in November, will be used to fund necessary improvements to keep buildings safe and efficiently operating. The bond funding will also be used for tangible items such as replacing school buses and technology. The structure of this bond plan is to avoid an increase in taxes. Herbal Tummy Tamers B Y O L I V I A W I N G E R T, C O - O W N E R S O U V I A T E ATM Like every year, October is the month that kicks off the holiday season....a time of festivities, get togethers with family and friends, and of course, good food, drink and scrumptious desserts! From Halloween to New Years, we are invited to indulge and sometimes overindulge. Delicious foods are abundant and who can say no to butter-rich mashed potatoes or that second piece of pumpkin pie - a la mode, of course! All too often, however, these yummy meals leave us with an unhappy tummy. To get through this year’s holiday season with little disruption from your digestive system, try some of the following herbs that are known to deal with the mess that too much gravy and pie leave behind. GINGER Ginger is great as a digestive herb. One of its most well known uses is for nausea and for settling an upset stomach. Ginger is an aromatic and carminative herb which means that it helps move along a stagnant digestion with symptoms of bloating, gas and bad breath. It is also a powerful anti-microbial herb which fights pathogens in the digestive system as well, thereby preventing food poisoning. (One of the reasons why fresh ginger is served with Sushi!) FENNEL Fennel is a carminative herb which dispels gas and promotes digestion. This herb is a staple in every German household and to this day I like having a cup of fennel tea after dinner. It is safe and recommended to soothe the tummies of colicky infants. The anti-spasmodic properties help with bloating and uncomfortable cramps due to gas. Like ginger, fennel is also anti-microbial. DRIED ORANGE PEEL Orange Peel has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. According to the principles of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), the orange peel is used to transform phlegm in the Lungs or the Spleen and to drain dampness. From a western perspective, orange peel is a “bitter” and stimulates the digestive fire.

Monotasking - A Better Paradigm?

“Multitasking is multi-failing unless you happen to be one of the 2% on the planet who are supertaskers and whose performance gets better the more they multitask.” So says Dr. Jenny Brockis a medical practitioner, specialist in the science of high-performance thinking and author of Future Brain: The 12 Keys to Create Your High-Performance Brain. She goes on to say that cognitive testing will disprove your delusion that you are actually more productive by multitasking. This is from the MPA Editor online edition from August 19, 2016. Multitasking is trying to focus on more than one thing at a time. Her analysis is that multitasking fragments our attention and makes us much less productive. That two-minute interruption while we answer an Email takes us as long as 24 minutes to get back where we were before. It is estimated that multitasking causes us to make up to 50% more mistakes and take 50% longer to complete our work. This equates to a 25% drop in productivity throughout the day. Why do we do it? It has become a workplace norm. Checking off those items on our “to-do” list makes us feel good – adding to the delusion. The cognitive cost is poorer memory, mental fatigue, and reduced efficiency. It puts us at risk of burnout, damaged relationships and poorer performance. It is hardly the “time and energy” saving solution we thought it would be. While the gist of the referenced article is aimed at the workplace, we can adapt it
to our everyday life. Here are four steps to help you move away from multitasking: 1. Introduce monotasking into your home and/or workplace. This top-down strategy gives everyone permission to follow suit. 2. Prioritize your priorities. List the top three priorities and don’t move on to the second until the first one is completed. 3. Communicate your priorities. Make sure that all involved are on the same page and there is no temptation to start on something else. 4. Practice Monotasking. Choose one activity, close the office door, switch off your phone, avoid all interruptions and work on just one activity for a specified amount of time. Monotasking promotes more work being completed and to a higher standard. Completing our work is very rewarding thus triggering a release of dopamine in our brains making us feel better and motivating us to repeat this rewarding activity. With our Law enforcement team and many volunteers they provide us with great information and outstanding relevant speakers. The speaker for the Wednesday, September 14, 2016 meeting, was a career burglar so we had a Conversations with a Crook. He was feeding his drug habit for 25 years! and it was through systematic burglaries. This was his JOB and he was very good at it. He may even have done one of your neighbors houses! Part of his sentencing was to do community service. I think everyone at the meeting felt his sharing was very insightful. He said the best times were the 4th of July and the Christmas holidays. He and his buddy cased houses and areas looking for multiple newspapers, door hangers , dark
houses and even notes in the mail box reminding the mailman not to leave mail! They would even open the exterior closets where hot water heaters were and bust thru the sheet rock. Is yours locked? Is your electric panel secure? If the house had an alarm he knew he easily had 5 minutes to grab stuff and get out. He headed right for the bedroom, as that was where most people had their jewelry. He had a jeweler that would buy his items, and melt them down. No questions asked. Remember I said he did this for twenty five years! Many of the tips he shared we know and have heard before, but we need to be reminded and that is why having block watch meeting helps. Antiquity SENIOR MOMENTS BY DAN SEAGREN This is an unusual word in a sense. It means old, ancient, historical period, artifact according to my computer thesaurus (a synonym finder) which means (an equivalent word). Since I have been writing Senior Moments for many years, theoretically I should be running out of moments, especially senior ones. Right? So, how can I justify these moments which are not ancient, historical except that some of them are old (if we can justify something approaching let’s say twenty years old but not ancient). But then, maybe Senior means the author. Then I do qualify except these are not always my moments but more reflections or observations or questioning which is what they are. My web page also contained earlier Spontaneous Reflections and then just Reflections (musings, observations, contemplation, spontaneous). Consequently most of my writing is just that. Not particularly scholarly, nor historical, ancient nor a brief dissertation (thesis, treatise). At times I have considered penning blogs (diary, journal, communication, web log). In a sense it is all these except as I understand it, a blog can be answered and become a dialogue. And this dialogue can be harmonious, controversial or both. In earlier times, I used a smaller type and tried to get about 600 words on a 8 ½ x 11” sheet of paper but was encouraged to make them even shorter to about 400 words. That has some advantages, both for the writer and the reader especially in the sound bite era in which we live. Now this includes many professions such as lectures and sermons, laws and amendments, advertisements and instructions and so on. Yes, brevity has its virtue as well as essential inclusion both of which are not always well deployed. Yes, I have considered retiring my Senior Moments at the end of the year or when I reach 90 in 2017 but will continue in the interim. Just thought you might be wondering P.S. This is only a little over 300 words but my guess is that they will be closer to 400 rather than 300 words.

BY STEVE BROCK With my clients who have IRAs, I like to ask them, “If you didn’t have to take your required minimum distributions, would you?” More than half of my clients answer, “I wouldn’t take required minimum distributions if I didn’t have to. Or at least I wouldn’t take as much.” A required minimum distribution (RMD) is the annual amount that an IRA owner must begin taking from their IRA when they reach age 70 ½ . There is now a program that can defer a significant portion of your IRA and hence RMDs out to age 85. On July 1, 2014, the IRS approved the use of a qualified longevity annuity contract or QLAC. These are fixed annuities, also referred to as deferred income annuities. This ruling allows you to defer 25%, up to $125,000, of your IRA for as long as 15 years or to age 85. It then guarantees a lifetime income stream regardless of how much longer you live. This amount, up to $125,000, is also excluded from your current RMD calculation, potentially lowering your current taxes. Example: Male, 70 years old, puts $125,000 from his IRA into a QLAC annuity. This results in $125,000 from which he does not have to take required minimum distributions or pay taxes on at this time. Instead he defers this amount for a certain period of time. If he defers it for 10 years, at age 80 he would have a guaranteed lifetime income of $16,316, or 13.05% of the initial $125,000 amount. If he defers it for 15 years, at age 85 he would have a guaranteed lifetime income of $27,025, or 21.62% of the initial $125,000 amount. Because this is still qualified (IRA) money, these future lifetime payouts would be taxable. But it’s income that you don’t have to pay tax on now. If you ‘die early’, your spouse or other beneficiaries are guaranteed to recover all of the money you initially put in, less any income payouts you have already taken. A QLAC can provide a lifetime income for a single life or a joint life (must be spouses) and can therefore be an excellent way to provide future income for a surviving spouse. QLACs can be done with many retirement plan assets such as 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457(b) and individual IRAs. QLACs are fixed annuities meaning that they are fully protected against any market losses. Cost-of-living adjustment can also be added to the contract. BIG CITY BLUES B Y T E R R Y R A T N E R , R N , M F A I walk around the city streets where I live as if I was a tourist, someone on a secret mission, a voyeur, taking mental notes of what I see and what I hear. The streets are lined with concrete and glass. I wonder if anyone else feels the solitude and loneliness I seem to inhale in this city. I want to shout, “Hello! You don’t see me, but I’m somebody too. Someone with a past and a future.” Feeling alone isn’t a comfortable experience. It’s more a failure to bond with others than a physical solitude. It feels like being hungry when everyone around you is readying for a feast. It feels disgraceful and disturbing, and overtime those feelings radiate outwards, making you feel increasingly isolated. Imagine standing by a window on the eighth or eleventh, or thirtieth floor of a building. The city unveils itself as a growth of cells constantly growing; a hundred thousand glass windows, some darkened, and some filled with flashing strobetype lights. Inside people tend to their private hours. You can see them, but you can’t reach them on any level. This is a common urban occurrence, available in every city of the world on any night—a combination of separation and disclosure. I recently moved back to Chicago, the city where I grew up, after spending forty years in the desert. Most of my Arizona friends were in shock when I announced to them, “I’m moving to the Windy City.” Their eyes forgot to blink, their mouth opened and forgot to close. They turned their lips inside out. Their first reaction, disbelief, was soon followed by all the reasons to stay in Phoenix: Family, friends, ease of transportation, and most important---because they will miss me. They wanted to admonish and discourage me, tell me the move is a grave mistake, warn me about corruption, describe in detail the violence and bankruptcy that ravages the city. Then try to persuade me to stay. But they never mentioned the loneliness that might surround me. “Why Chicago?” became the standard reply. Then I’d go into my spiel about how I’ve missed the changing seasons, the elm trees and the weeping willows that line Lincoln Park. How I’d dreamt about riding my bike along Lake Michigan, dodging the skaters, joggers and bikers. Then I’d jump into my sentimental soliloquy, “I’ll be living in the same building my grandparents lived in. The same building my mother and her two sisters grew up in. The same neighborhood I spent my childhood.” Now I had a spellbound audience. They’d stand staring in awe for a few seconds before saying, “That’s so cool that you’re moving back. I get it. It’s full circle.” Which brings me to my next point. What it feels like to move halfway across the country to semi-familiar territory after being away for so long, not knowing anyone except for two cousins in their 90s and another cousin in their late eighties. I still
have a handful of high school friends who live here, but few reside in the city. My parents, along with my aunts and uncles are no longer are alive. I’ve been an outsider for so long. I miss my friends in Phoenix—friends who share a history with you, know your inner soul, how you think, and what you’re about. When you leave a place you’ve lived for many years, a place where you’ve become a vital part of a community, it’s a difficult choice to move 1750 miles away. At times I’m overwhelmed with loneliness for friends and family, so isolated that I think about moving back or hopping on a plane for a quick visit. I forget sometimes that I now live here part-time and I’m not on some prolonged vacation. I’ve been uprooted by choice. Loneliness occurs everywhere—it has no confines. But there is a specific flavor to the remoteness that stems from living in a large metropolitan city surrounded by thousands of people. Mere physical proximity is not enough to dispel the feeling of internal isolation. On the bright side, I’m excited to see what projects will emerge from the complex relationship between loneliness and one’s art. Could it be that deep-rooted emotion spurs one’s creative juices?

Music for Mountains B Y S U S A N M E R C E R H I N R I C H S , R E P O R T E R , T H E M O O N VA L L E Y TAT T L E R Think about the valley terrain in and around North Mountain and Shaw Butte, studded with saguaros and charming with cholla. Moon Valley hikers, bikers, joggers and nature enthusiasts, along with countless others, have flocked to the area for decades, enjoying largely undisturbed Phoenix Mountains Preserve landscape in the midst of one of the nation’s largest municipalities. Now imagine voyaging through that same valley, only to be traversing city streets flanked by houses on all sides – some nestled next to the base of the peaks – or even a golf course. That could have been the scenario if some foresighted folks hadn’t pressed local leaders starting more than 40 years ago. Even today, the lands preservation-andexpansion work continues. And thanks to an annual autumn event called Music in the Mountains, one among other events and activities, money raised in the course of it was earmarked to purchase any parcel and plot that “looks like it should be part of the preserve,” the Save Our Mountains Foundation President Terry Horne says. Held at the North Mountain Visitor Center, 12950 N. Seventh St. on Oct. 8-9, the SOMF hoped to raise $10,000 in the course of musical entertainment and an auction. At a Sept. 27 board meeting of the 501c3 organization, Horne says its members directed the group’s attorney to send letters to various property owners, inquiring if they would consider the possibility of selling or donating their land to become part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. “Now, the Save Our Mountains Foundation considers it an appropriate (economic) time to act, with regard to some of the parcels we’re trying to add” to the mountains preserve, Horne says. Those properties “are all over,” SOMF Vice President Leslie Spencer-Snider says, declining specifics, but adding they’re along North Seventh and North 40th streets and North Cave Creek Road, among other areas. Some are land-locked and would be difficult for a builder to develop, she adds. The SOMF advocates constantly to add parcels into preserve lands. Its concerns stretch from the South Mountains range to the Sonoran Preserve in the Anthem area. “This is the original focus of the Save Our Mountains Foundation,” SpencerSnider says. “To purchase land to add to the Phoenix Mountains Preserve system,” in conjunction with the City of Phoenix. “If it’s land that looks like or is bordered by mountains preserve, and people think it

The last major parcel in the Moon Valley neighborhood added into the preserve was 30 contiguous acres bordering the east side of North 19th Avenue from approximately its intersection with West Cactus Road on the south and West Sweetwater Avenue on the north. The SOMF also operates in tandem with the for-profit Phoenix Mountains Preservation Council, another preserve-advocacy organization; along with the city and other conservation-minded establishments, too. The SOMF and the PMPC were pivotal in reopening the North Mountain Visitor Center after the Great Recession forced Phoenix to close the city-owned structure. Today, volunteers from both groups staff it during operating hours and coordinate activities held there. Another example of the partnership stands as the bird-blind area, located on the south side of the center. Designed by architect and artist Susanne Rothwell, a past president of the PMPC, the viewing area was built to municipal code. Rothwell says while the structure cost the SOMF and the PMPC several tens of thousands of dollars, donated materials, construction expertise and a great deal of volunteer labor allowed it to come into existence. She’s proud to say a City of Phoenix appraisal valued it at $80,000. The NMVC is home to some 50 events monthly, among them this October’s fourth annual musical event and auction. One of the initial Music in the Mountains festivals specifically raised funds to build the bird blind, Spencer-Snider says. Another past president of the PMPC, she says area musicians donated their time to perform during the event and that countless center friends, volunteers and nearby businesses contributed items slated to be auctioned. As an historical note, the Phoenix Mountains Preserve came into existence with a 1973 bond election, when city voters approved $23.5 million to buy its first acreage, according to an article Kathleen Gilbert wrote. She is the daughter of one of the socalled Little Old Ladies in Tennis Shoes, whose many years of advocacy stands as the bastion of the preservation effort. The ladies included longtime Phoenix residents Maxine Lakin, Dottie Gilbert, Ruth Hamilton and Penny Howe.
