Rookie Mom: The Kids Will Be Okay… And So Will You Dear Parents, If you are any bit like my husband, or my siblings, or the other parents I’ve been chatting with, you are worried about your children’s academic and emotional wellbeing this 2020-21 school year.

same qualms as many teachers in Arizona: little pay, constant teacher turnover, and big love for kids, but supporting your families and paying off those student loans came first, hard and fast.

There are many countless and valid questions. Let me start here: I am very proud that this will be my 9th year teaching.

My husband, Adam, taught for 5 years at the Pendergast Unified School District at a Title I elementary school and had the

20 teachers -- many had quickly evolved into good friends from the school -were let go in July 2019, a year after the #RedForEd movement fighting for the right of increased teacher pay. (If you didn’t get this from the article, let me reiterate: teaching is hard.) But this year, it’s going to be more challenging as a teacher… But more importantly, for our students and parents. For all teachers and parents reading this, you’ve probably cried more than a few times or worried about how your students have been doing since March. You want to support them the best way you know how.

Will they fall behind in school because it’s going to be virtual this year? Will preschool and elementary-aged students lack socialization skills that are a crucial part of their educational development? Should you homeschool your children or hire a tutor so that COVID doesn’t spread so you can work from home, and not have to teach your kids math that you no longer know how to do as an adult?

But, teaching is hard. It just is. You worry about your students constantly, the pay isn’t great, and you learn to appreciate yourself more than wanting that validation from your students and colleagues. (From the words of the wise P. Diddy: “Set some goals. Smash the [ish] outta them. And clap for your own [darn] self!”)

With teaching, you know you are changing people’s lives, and that your students are teaching you and changing yours in turn. It is an invaluable profession. When I taught at ASU Prep for 3 years,

All I can say is this, as it keeps guiding me: Our children and students will do well because the people who care about guiding our children truly love and want what’s best for them (even if sometimes the kids don’t realize it!). So, this is my advice as a parent and teacher: Yes, this year is going to be the toughest one in many of our lives. However, if you look around -- really look around --

we are ALL adapting. Our community is so resilient… There are countless people in Moon Valley who care and want to see your kids and YOU succeed, too. And guess what? BY HANA ALANIS “We’ll Stand on Our Heads to Make You Happy” Jackie Robinson (no relation you go from TV’s to swimming pool store owner? Well Perry’s Pool Pumps was

to the wonderful baseball player) was a farm boy from Virginia who moved to Arizona – as most folks did in the 1960s as a prescription for asthma – with his family and started their TV repair shop: Valleywide TV Repair. He’s grandfather to Jake Odom, and here’s their story. Jake Odom wears a black t-shirt with Valleywide Pool Supply on the front with tributes on the sleeve to breast cancer, in honor of his late mother ,and a puzzle piece for Autism awareness just below, a symbol for his daughter who lives with Autism. Saying Jake is a hard-working family man is an understatement, and he’s likely one of the most modest folks I’ve ever met. With a rigorous work ethic instilled in him from both sides of the family (his Grandpa Jackie with Virginia farm blood, and his dad’s side of the family who ran a watermelon farm in Tolleson, Arizona) Jake believes in doing things right, never overselling, and he’s constantly giving back to the community. He told me not to say anything, but whoops, you all need to know this about him. When he hears someone in need, he helps in the areas he knows best, and he’s been supporting our local schools. You have seen his shop on 7th St and Coral Gables, a perfect location to help manage the needs of Moon Valley pool owners. But did you know he drives into work from Chandler every day? Jake considers himself a Moon Valley boy through and through – the Robinson side of his family lived in Moon Valley for over 40 years, with Jake being born and raised in a home off 7th St and Union Hills. His grandfather’s shop was first at 19th Ave and Thunderbird (there’s a CVS in the spot now) before it then moved to 19th Ave and Sweetwater. His mother was in the first ever graduating class at Greenway HS, his uncles went to Thunderbird, another to Moon Valley High, and his sister attended Lookout Mountain, Mountain Sky, and graduated from Thunderbird. And he knew he wanted his shop in Moon Valley, even if it means a long commute into work to ensure his daughter has the best education for herself on the Chandler side of the valley. At 15, Jake could be found repairing away in his grandpa’s shop, so how do

their next-door neighbor, and Jake with his awesome work ethic popped in one day and said I want to work. And put to work he was at 60 hours in his first week earning a whopping $150 commission. He got hooked. In 2004, Jake opened his own pool related motor repair shop, but understanding the fluid nature of business, he also created the store and pool service arm. Motors will eventually not exist to be repaired, but what do people love to do here in Arizona during warm weather? Jump in their pools. With 6,000 pools in a 3 mile radius, it just makes sense and there’s not been a lot of plans to fill them in. Jake states it’s funny with pools they now service, it seems like a bunch of folks his age have moved back into their parent’s old homes and adopted their pools. All of the pool owners who reach out, come shop in the store or use the pool service, Jake describes them as nothing but loyal. A huge part of that loyalty is due to the amazing skill of Jake’s partner in biz, Richard. Richard went to college for Chemistry. He’s a straight up CPO certified Chemist, and he’ll tell you exactly how to fix your pool’s chemical levels - you just need to listen. They noticed a lot of customers were getting disillussioned with big-box stores like Leslie’s because they spends hundreds if not thousands of dollars and get no where. With Richard on the scene, pools get fixed the first time and at a fraction of the cost. So how has COVID affected them? Not knowing if customers would be afraid to come in, Jake developed a completely contactless program of over the phone orders with hand-delivery to Moon Valley backyards. It’s been a great help for those folks who are vulnerable, plus keeping pools in tip-top shape is imperative to preventing other diseases. On a personal level? It’s been hard. Jake is very close with his grandmother. Before COVID, he delivered groceries every Thursday and they have a special bond of texting each other during Dbacks games: neither of those things have been happening right now. Once it’s safe again to see his grandmother, Jake has a beautiful surprise for her. Did you notice his pool store and his grandfather’s TV repair shop both have the same name? Have you seen the sweet caricature mascot for Valleywide? That’s a drawing of his smiley granddad. The original mascot from Valleywide TV Repair was Jake’s grandpa standing on his head, because Grandpa Jackie’s slogan in the 80s was “we’ll stand on our heads to make you happy.” And lastly, Jake’s motor repair shop we mentioned earlier? The Bike Boom: Patching a Tube BY LEON, TRY ME BIC YCLE Patching a tube is rather easy. Glueless patches are fast to use but don’t seem to last as long. Glue patches seem to last longer an stick on better with new tubes that can be slightly oily. First find the nail, glass, or thorn that made the flat and remove. Next take off one side off the tire and pull out the tube. Check the inside of tire for thorns. Put a little air in the tube to find the leak. Rough the tube with sandpaper, apply glue let dry 5 minutes. Pull the foil backing off the patch apply to tube forcing on with finger. Assemble air to pressure imprinted on tire. Things you will need patch kit, tire levers, small air pump. You can be lazy like me and just carry an extra tube or two. But don’t let a flat tire stop your ride.

Many of our youths are realizing the history they are creating and the unique value of their choices (and voices!) during this impressionable period of their lives. As an extrovert, not being able to see most of my friends is very tough for me. I love being able to go out with friends and family and have an amazing fun time. With COVID-19, I haven’t been able to go out as much with all of my friends which makes a big impact on me. If I get into a fight with someone I would like to be able to talk everything out in person rather than it be a constant fight over the phone or text message. COVID-19 has put me and my friends into a situation where if we get into an argument then we can’t work it out too well due to the reason that they can’t hang out as often. My friends and I have to get creative with hanging out so we don’t endanger others by the possibility of passing germs with one another. Also, it’s hard for me to see other family members because a few of them have conditions that put them into an unsafe environment going outside of the house. Also, our extended family can’t see us too much because they live on the East Coast while we live in Arizona. The Coronavirus has been destroying our everyday lives, and although it is impacting our everyday lives, the smart and safe thing to do is social-distance and wear masks in public places.

In December 2019, my family and I left my hometown of Temecula, California to move to Anthem, Arizona. This was -- and still is -- -the hardest thing I have ever done. When we arrived in Arizona, I felt a sense of deep dread in the pit of my stomach as I thought of starting my entire life over at a new high school, especially as a freshman.

When I started at Boulder Creek High School, it was trying for the first month. However, I found myself making friends and settling into my new home. While I still deeply missed my old home, I connected and bonded with the most kind and caring people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. My BCHS teachers made an extra effort to make me feel safe and comfortable in their classrooms.

What should I know about all this? ~ Stuck at home Dear Stuck, Yep its true, Zoom is a pretty popular option for video calls and has exploded all over the web for business meetings, online gatherings and happy hours. (Cheers to that!) You can access online meetings on your computer, smartphone or tablet device. So, how do you zoom? (Check out: support.zoom.us). Zoom has many pro features but a few cons as well. It’s a bit less secure and sometimes freezes right when the party gets started. The free version boots everyone out after 40 minutes and if the story is just getting good…well…you all need to re-sign in. Generally, it’s an easy option to meet and greet up to 100 of your closest pals. But there are other choices. Remember Skype? If you use Microsoft products in your daily life and Outlook for your mail, Skype is an option integrated in your login. It’s set up more like a chat window which is kind of cool. You’ll need everyone’s Skype phone number which is not so cool, to connect up to about 25 friends or colleagues. (More info: support. skype.com) You may have been to a gotomeeting. This has been a sturdy meeting platform for many years in many businesses. Commonly, the company pays a fee and everyone else is free. But now there are free versions to the community. (Thanks pandemic). If you have RingCentral, a growing phone service, the video app that comes with it, is considered one of the best and most secure in the world by many experts. Cisco Webex deserves a nod here, a more sophisticated option considering VoIP (Voice over IP) features. Don’t want to get into all that techie stuff right now huh? OK got it! Most all video apps allow you to ‘share your screen’ so if you are working on an awesome project you can share and show it to the group. If you are stuck on a problem or need tech help TeamViewer allows someone to remotely access and ‘take over’ your screen. Yep that should be someone super trustworthy! Finally, Google is a big player in the video world of course! Formerly, Google Hangouts found right in the Gmail inbox has been a popular video chat option for teens, kids, grandmas and business friends and families for years. But even better, is Google Meet which boasts premium and extra secure features for a variety of groups. It is now a number one choice for schools and many small businesses. (See: apps.google. com/meet). At least one person needs a Gmail account, but from there you can invite anyone, anywhere. What’s Up with PPP? An Exploratory Interview with Ed Trapp, CPA I myself am a small business owner, a contractor in the design space, and even an in-house designer for other companies. I keep hearing about PPP loans and SBA help, but it ends up being a lot of hearsay. Could I qualify for PPP with my own business? How can I pay myself? What are other things to know about PPP, both applying for the loan and then what do you do after you receive the funds? I decided I needed help, even if just to ask ill-formed questions out loud. Now while I was researching PPP loans and how to properly use them, I came across certain advice. The advisement was for business owners to consult an accountant to find out how their business losses can help with tax relief. The CARES Act that created the PPP loan program also changed tax laws to allow businesses’ net operating losses going back to the 2018 tax year to be carried back up to five years and carried forward over the next two decades. Those changes can help “improve cash flow and liquidity” for small businesses, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Even SCORE recommends that businesses reach out to their accountants or a CPA “to find out what they can put toward business losses and look at their taxes for next year.” Businesses can also talk to their insurance company to find out if any of their business losses are covered under their insurance program. So, I heeded that advice and called the best one I know: Ed Trapp, CPA. But what do I ask him? And what would you ask him? Well, let’s start there shall we, just simply.

Why would or should someone talk to an accountant when they are thinking about applying for a PPP loan?

Ed:

I will be transparent, there are firms that are more knowledgeable on the full PPP process, but the reason you’d want to contact your accountant or CPA would be to see if you can receive the PPP funds to get

You should really consult with your own CPA first, but I’m always available to help or if you don’t have a CPA yet.

Hana: That’s awesome that you can be available to answer the questions someone may have when filling out their forms with the bank they are going with. Now after a client receives their PPP funds, what advice do you give? What are the next steps?

Ed: As soon as you get the funds, put it in a separate bank account. This

is where you would draw off those funds as your business needs them. Usually, you will open the new account with the bank that is handling your PPP loan. This separation is necessary for ease in tracking the disbursement of that money.

Hana: Now when I’ve done some very amateur “research” on how to properly use the funds, I read about payroll. I’ve never processed payroll before. Is this something you and your team can help with?

Ed: Yes. We can help with setting up payroll services and answer any

questions about payroll. We do offer live payroll which means we can cut those checks for employees and do the end of year reporting. For so many years, Ed’s business has been built strictly on referrals, which means he clearly knows what he’s doing. Even speaking to him on the phone with my mangled mess of non-PPP knowledge, Ed is always very transparent and matter-of-fact, traits that I would want in anyone working with my business financials. If I find the right bank to apply for PPP with, I know I’ll still be speaking Ed during the process to make sure I dot my “i’s” and cross my “t’s.”

WESD Return to Learn: Reopening Plan BY DR . PAUL S TANTON, SUPERINTENDENT, WESD Hello!  I am Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. As we prepare for reopening of the 2020-2021 school year, I want to take this opportunity to thank you – our parents, grandparents and neighbors – for your ongoing support and perseverance during these fluid times. The beginning of the new school year will look differently this year; however, the WESD Family continues to uphold our mission to prepare all students to become responsible, successful contributors to our diverse society even through the challenges that we all face together. The WESD leadership has been working with our dedicated staff to develop our District’s reopening plan. I would like to take a moment to highlight the key updates of our WESD Return to Learn Reopening Plan here. #WESDReturnToLearn WESD schools will begin Monday, August 10 with virtual learning. This means all students will begin online for the first 30 calendar days of the school year (through Labor Day). During this time, administration will be evaluating the options of the plan based on the guidance from federal, state and local health officials, the Governor, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. All information related to WESD’s Return to Learn Reopening Plan can be found at www.wesdschools.org/returntolearn. In preparation for distance learning, the WESD provided Chromebooks to every student who needed one. School administrators and staff distributed Chromebooks July 30 and 31. Hotspots were also available for families who do not have Internet access. We are grateful for all of the time and effort that our WESD teachers, instructional coaches and principals put into developing engaging lessons and activities to be taught by WESD teachers using Google Classroom and Google Meet. children’s classes are going swimmingly at hubbard family swim school BY LIL A BALTMAN Now that it’s finally back-to-school time in Arizona, parents are happily enrolling their children in after-school swim lessons at the Hubbard Family Swim School. While the COVID-19 pandemic is keeping many children at home and away from their regular, in-person school routine, children’s swim lessons are continuing in person and in the water with several new safety measures in place. Hubbard’s new safety measures include: Face coverings are required for everyone over the age of 6 (except when in the water). Families are asked to limit their swim entourage to one adult per family. Enter the building no more than 10 minutes before your scheduled lesson. Upon arrival, use the available hand sanitizer. Practice social distancing and keep children close when they are not in a lesson. Families are strongly encouraged to come and leave in swim gear to reduce the number of people in the changing area. To reduce family crossover, makeups are not being offered at this time. Founded in 1998 by co-owners Bob and Kathy Hubbard - world-renowned experts and educators in the field of infant swimming - Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. The Hubbard’s basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim. Learning to swim should not be a choice. “Back-to-school time is a great time to enroll children in swim lessons during the week or on the weekend,” says Bob Hubbard. “Not only is swimming excellent exercise for children to enjoy after school and a wonderful way for them to burn off energy, we don’t want children to lose the important swim skills and swim strokes they learned over the summer.” After-school swim lessons are available on weekdays until 7 p.m. Children who learn how to swim actually demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to world-

leading research led by Griffith University in Australia. Their 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have an advantage when starting school. Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are very important for their transition to school - their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development. The study surveyed 7,000 parents from Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. over three years. The study showed that children’s fine motor skills and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school. “We have spent over 20 years here in Arizona watching thousands of children under the age of 4 become calm and confident swimmers,” adds Kathy. “It’s such a joy for us to help introduce children to the wonderful sport of swimming which can definitely become a life-long sport.” Many students who grew up taking swim lessons at Hubbard also went on to have competitive swim careers in high school and college. There are three Hubbard Family Swim School locations around the Valley in Phoenix, Peoria, Mesa - and a fourth swim school will open in Goodyear this September. Asset Protection for Your Heirs

The revocable living trust is a great estate planning tool, but it does not protect your assets from your creditors. The assets in your trust are still considered your assets because you continue to have complete control over them. On the other hand, you can use your trust to provide asset protection for your beneficiaries after your death. When you pass your assets on to your beneficiaries, instead of giving them of all the assets outright, where they put it in their own bank account or in their own name, at death, your trust directs the trustee to create an irrevocable trust for each beneficiary. Trusts Can Keep an Inheritance Out of the Hands of Creditors These irrevocable Trusts do provide asset protection for the trust assets. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. Here is a real-life example (details changed to protect confidentiality): Son started a business, but in the economic downturn it didn’t make it. He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing, his Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Instead, because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee. Had Mom given him the assets in trust, he could have completed the bankruptcy without using the assets in the trust, and after the bankruptcy, the assets in trust could have given him a fresh start. Trusts Can Protect an Irresponsible Heir from Himself and Still Provide for His Welfare When we create trusts for your beneficiaries at your death, we provide protection from beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well, such as a child (or the child’s spouse) who is a spendthrift, or an heir with drug, gambling or other addiction issues. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust will allow for discretionary distributions to your heirs for the health, education, maintenance and general welfare of the beneficiary. Using the trust allows your beneficiary to benefit from your assets but doesn’t give that person unlimited access to spend on whatever he pleases.

Trusts Can Protect the Inheritance in Case of Your Beneficiary’s Divorce or Death If a beneficiary is divorcing, or has a rocky marriage, leaving the inheritance in trust can assure that your beneficiary keeps your money and doesn’t lose part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the beneficiary and not her spouse. An outright distribution of the inheritance, however, is likely to be commingled in accounts held by both the beneficiary and his spouse. The assets then may be considered community property and some portion will go to the divorcing spouse. The Trust can protect the inheritance at the death of your heir also. Your child’s spouse may be entitled to half or more of the child’s separate property at death, even if they wouldn’t be entitled to any of it in a divorce. Thus, if your child dies with the assets in his own name, his spouse may take the assets instead of your grandchildren. On the other hand, if you give the assets in a trust, you state who is to receive the remainder of the assets after your child dies. You can even include the spouse if you wish, while assuring that what is left at his or her death goes to your grandchildren, and not someone else. The Arizona Advantage for the Responsible Heir In Arizona, we have the somewhat unique law that permits a beneficiary to be trustee of his or her own trust and still have some of the protections we’ve discussed in this article. That means the beneficiary has control over the trust and all the assets in it, while still getting the advantages of divorce protection and some of the creditor protections. That’s an advantage you should take advantage of! Asset protection planning for your heirs is a substantial benefit to using a revocable living trust as your primary estate planning tool. “You Haven’t Had ‘Enoughie’ Yet!” BY C H R I S T Y VA N D E R S E E Feeling stressed out? Feeling anxious? Can’t concentrate with so much on your mind with all that’s going on in our world right now? Imagine if you weren’t an adult but a child or teenager and couldn’t express those emotions. Sometimes the perfect balm to these exposed feelings is kindness to others. Simply, kindness. A way to not think about our own troubles. Something we can teach our children that can make a difference in not only someone else’s life but their own as well. National Charity League, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter believes in this very strongly. This is why we have embraced The Kindness Campaign. Helping others has been proven to make the volunteer feel joy and happiness in the act of reaching out to others. The Moon Valley Chapter can’t think of a better time in our nation than now to do just that. It starts at home, in Arizona. As families are all stuck at home, The Kindness Campaign knew they were needed more than ever. They believe that the future is kindness and they focus on children and their emotional health. They know that loneliness and isolation, especially during this unprecedented time, exists. Their mission is to make a change by “teaching emotional awareness, empathy, community building, and most importantly, the development of a healthy self-image.” They do this through their adorable blue, antennae mascot named Enoughie Buddy. He lets kids know that it’s ok to be different. He does this through his antennae which gives him his superpower, a little extra help, to be himself when he’s feeling down or nervous. This is where the mothers and daughters of Moon Valley Chapter stepped in. With our own crafting superpowers, we put together several Enoughie Buddy headband and antennae packs. The packs are then sent to teachers and schools who will use them as emotional and social learning tools. The kids can wear their own antennae

whenever they need their own boost of confidence. Helping others while also inadvertently helping yourself. Spreading kindness while adding balm to your own frayed emotions. Two side effects from making Enoughie Buddy’s! Even though we haven’t been able to volunteer in person as much as we are use to, NCL, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter will always find a way to give back. It’s that important. NCL, Inc., is a philanthropic organization with over 200 chapters across the country that all share the mission of fostering strong motherdaughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. The flowers in our respective gardens of life are joys to behold. Our friends and family are close to our hearts. For Arizona Women’s Partnership, these flowers come as supporters & volunteers. Our garden has been growing since 2002. “Many flowers come to us via ‘job’ postings on www.volunteermatch.org and this summer was no exception», notes Paula Cullison, President and Founder of AZWP. Another of our most recent volunteers is Justin Owen, a Senior at Red Mountain HS in Mesa (Class of 2021). Justin was looking to volunteer his help to address our Social Media needs. We decided on a video project. The Arizona Women’s Partnership was the featured non-profit at the opening of the In Celebration of Women juried art exhibit at the Herberger Theater Art Gallery on March 6th (before the quarantine). My goal was to have a video created to commemorate this exhibit and opening event. Justin was up for the challenge. I supplied him with about 150 jpgs of the 30 art works, featured entertainment, speakers, reception attendees, artists standing next to their respective works, etc. Justin created an awesome video of the In Celebration of Women exhibit. I was impressed by his willingness to meet the challenge, his responsiveness and his maturity. As President and Founder of the Arizona Women’s Partnership, I have worked with many students over the years. Some are really self-motivated; Justin is one of them.

Having received several USA-SBA Certificates and having attending a DECA - AZ Leadership Conference, as well as having completed courses at Mesa Community College, Justin is creating his path for a successful future. “When I found the posting for social media help on Volunteer Match, I was very eager to reach out. Marketing is something that I have a drive for, and when I read more about AZWP and what they stand for, I was so excited to be a part of it. I want to thank Paula for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I enjoyed every bit of work I put into this project. Working with her was amazing, and I am looking forward to working on even more projects for AZWP in the future,” noted Justin. “For the AZ Women’s Partnership (based in Moon Valley), having a strong social media presence is a critical part of our growth. I love having friends and, especially, friends who are friends with each other. Networking appears to be key to happiness and survival in these times. Friends can be so smart and amazing and helpful in sharing these thoughts. Do we have too many boundaries right now? Boundaries to help us stay alive. But, now what? Now we have an opportunity to look at, perhaps, a fear of not being enough. Of being alone with ourselves and a few other people. Have we been hooked on drama? Do we fully understand that our wants and needs are important or have others’ wants and needs come first? Can we recognize the stages of personal grief that we may be in? Loss of liberty to go to the library, shop, eat where and when we want to and meet people in groups or individually. These are huge losses. We may be denying that these losses affect us deeply. If so, we can help ourselves by saying things like, “May I be well and happy. May I be blessed. May you be well and happy. May you be blessed.” Again and again we say these words to sooth grief. We can follow up by saying, “I am brilliant. I am loveable. I am love and light. I am happy and full of joy. I am a healer of my own life and others’ lives. I find 10 ways to celebrate myself today.” These meditations may sound self-centered. But, if self-love is absent it is difficult to fully love others. “I breathe in peace. I breathe out fear. I keep my consciousness clean. I honor my thoughts and feelings. What is amazing about me? About you? Can I use this time of boundaries to find new insights? Can I distract myself into joy and wonder when I start to feel blue? Will I search for reasons to believe in us as survivors?” “Each of us is a complicated being, there is a crew of people in our minds. I live in gratitude for life. I allow myself to feel afraid, but I don’t become lost in fear.” There is much to ponder and practice in these unprecedented times. We are in this together and we sink or swim together. As for me, I am working on growing fins! Thank you, friends, for all your words of trust in the greater good that we are free to embrace with joy and energy. We are all doing the best we can from our own levels of consciousness. Did Plato say that?

The forgotten epidemic in the time of COVID-19 BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER, DC In the past month or so, Americans have progressively emerged from the COVID-19 lockdown that dominated headlines. But while we’ve seen encouragement on the COVID-19 front, and expect more in the months to come, the forgotten epidemic,1 a man-made plague, still thrives ... and may be getting worse. The Lockdown and Opioid Use Panic, job loss, financial insecurity, inability to access nondrug health care services for pain, and increased pain caused by any of the above may elevate the risk of opioid use, abuse and addiction. In fact, social isolation itself may increase addiction risk.2 A recent American Medical Association brief3 emphasizes the problem: “The AMA is greatly concerned by an increasing number of reports from national, state and local media suggesting increases in opioid-related mortality — particularly from illicitly manufactured fentanyl and fentanyl analogs. COVID-19 has caused many folks to carefully consider where they are willing to spend time outside the home. Of all the places to visit, the dentist is likely one of the safest. Since HIV appeared in the 1980’s, dental offices have adapted a standard of infection control that is sometimes known as “Universal Precautions.” This series of protocols assumes that every patient potentially caries an infectious disease. Strict standards are followed to ensure there is no “cross-contamination”, where pathogens from one patient can be passed to another. This requires mostly disposable, one-time use materials, or reusable instruments to be heat sterilized under pressure. Rooms are cleaned with a hospital-grade disinfectant after each patient and every surface not covered with a disposable barrier is sprayed and wiped. Dental team members wear masks, face shields and protective gowns. This standard precaution of infection control has served dentistry well through the eras of HIV, Hepatitis, Avian and Swine flu. COVID-19 has pushed the infection control protocol even higher.

The Pandemic Made me do it M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER What did this covid 19, CV19, Rona, Coronavirus madness make you do? I’ve seen lots of folks do something different with their hair. So much of mine had already grown out when the shops were shut down, I decided to embrace it (again) and go back to grey. I’ve had this spiky do before when I had the dark shaved off and I loved it. Summer is the best time to go super short. I was so happy to find my favorite stylist from Great Clips at Dolled and Dapper in the 7th St. and Union Hills Bashas shopping center. Tia is amazing and was excited that I trusted her to do something different with my hair! I didn’t set out to make masks that match my outfits, and yet I ended up with four that do. There are quite a few people out there with this same mask as I had so much fabric left over from this outfit. A happy result of these ‘mom masks’ as my friend Tracy calls them, is how much they help me on a windy day. I don’t usually wear one when walking the dogs, as I don’t encounter many people and when I do they’re much farther than 6 feet away, but the wind kicks up my allergies and makes me sick. Now I can protect myself from pollen!  When this nasty virus shut down the gyms, our middle son Joel created his own on the patio using hand weights, cinder blocks, piano bench and a long, wooden stake. He gets a tan while he’s at it and unlike many who have gained weight, he’s lost it. I set up a corner of our bedroom with mat, balls, weights, magic circle and bands. It’s not the same, but better than nothing. I’d imagine lots of you have gotten inventive with your work-outs too. Anytime Fitness still offers free classes online and I pop into those now and then as well and Ambry Mehr still has amazing work-outs on Instagram too. Now I know what it means to Netflix Binge and even though I only watch tv in the evenings I’ve managed to watch several seasons of different shows, however I still don’t have full command of all our remotes. They would be considered technology right? Well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it! The pandemic and quarantining have made me spend less money. I don’t go out shopping like I used to, even now that many stores are open. I’ve spent more time inside cleaning and organizing and found there’s no need to buy more when I’ve discovered how much ‘stuff’ we have that I’d forgotten about. I’m assuming there are many more people like me, because the roads and stores aren’t congested when I do go out. I know some have mastered curbside pickup for shopping, but I just can’t let go of the thought that no one can bargain shop like I can, and as good as I am, I can’t do an adequate job of it by shopping online. . at least not for groceries. I want to compare the labels of my purchases and make sure I’m getting not only the healthiest option, but the best deal. I think this pandemic is making people ornery too. If they aren’t tailgating (even though the roads are wide open), or getting mad over wearing a mask, they’re posting angry nonsense on social media. I know that the saying ‘we’re all in this together’ sounds trite, after all some people have lost loved ones, friends, and jobs and have food insecurity; others are still working and shopping like its December. In reality we really are in this together, because we can’t go anywhere to truly escape it. In fact, other countries have closed their borders and won’t let us in! Aside from jobs or unemployment, food or hunger, we really are all stuck here in this 2020 time warp. I pride myself on being positive, but am finding it hard to be so. At my job/school, the principal calls me the campus cheerleader, so I really am an upbeat person. I’m a teacher, a wife and mother first, but at my core I’m a teacher who loves kids. This newer position as a gifted specialist really suits me because I’ve always raised the bar with high expectations and pushed for more. Not all kiddos can adapt to that kind of insistence on excellence and I’m not one to back down. When it comes to teaching, I insist. I had the same expectations as a mother. I guess the magic in life can be in not giving in as long as it’s based on facts. Sometimes, just making people happy and feel safe is all we can actually do. Pushing our beliefs and expectations on others is unacceptable. If you’re not a teacher guiding a class towards knowledge about something pedagogical, then don’t push your beliefs onto others . . . Now is the Hour! THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON I consider myself semi-retired. Although, I am still active as a mortgage loan officer, I am not out pounding the pavement looking for deals. Almost exclusively my business comes from previous clients, referrals, and friends. About half of my business is Reverse Mortgages, which many other MLOs don’t do. Thus, I’m not checking rates everyday or even every week. A few weeks ago, I was deluged with loan inquiries. Each one requires me to work up a proposal with options for my client. I am working on purchases, refinances and Reverse Mortgages. I was totally blown away by how low rates are right now. I watch CNBC and I read the financial section of the newspaper. I take Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Yes, everyone is talking about low rates, but I never dreamed how low they actually have gotten. Rates in the mid two percent to low three percent range are popping up on every deal. As Mortgage Bankers, the company I work for, deals with a number of lenders whom we scrutinize to find the best situation for each individual borrower. We use an industry specific computer program that compares rates for more than 30 lenders and recommends the best rate for each application. Right now, the rates are the lowest I’ve ever seen. Here is the point – now is the hour. Regardless of whether or not you are considering making a move in real estate, you owe it to yourself to investigate your specific situation. A move to a shorter-term mortgage, purchasing a second home, looking into a Reverse Mortgage all make sense right now. Rates may never get this low again. Switching to a 15-year mortgage may provide a lower payment than the 30year mortgage you currently have. Depending on your current rate, you may be able to shorten the term of your mortgage and lower your payment as well. Eliminating costly Mortgage Insurance is another possibility If you are considering an upgrade, you may be able to buy a lot more house than you dreamed because of the lower rates, thus lower payments. You should have no problem selling your current home with the low supply of homes on the market. A second home in the mountains – now is the hour!

Moon Valley Neighborhoods: Moonlight cove BY JULIE PEK Signs on 7th Avenue welcome you into Moonlight Cove. This community of roughly 530 homes was developed by Pulte Homes back in the early 1990’s. Pulte is still building homes after 70 years in the business. Moonlight Cove was built in 4 stages, and its boundaries are 7th Avenue and Coral Gables to 11th Avenue and Kelton, just south of Bell Road. These homes were built with large families in mind, as many of them are 3,000 square feet on lots averaging 10,000 square feet in size. There are single-level homes but the majority are 2-story. An updated 2-story home is selling today in the mid-$500,000 range, and because they are so popular, they are selling quickly. The close proximity to shopping is also a popular feature. Janelle and her young family bought in 1992 when the community was being developed. “We wanted a brand new home in a central location and one that had good schools,” she said. “We loved the sense of community and my kids grew up having lots of neighborhood friends.” To this day, Janelle keeps up with her friends from Moonlight Cove and in fact she is godmother to one of her friend’s children. Halloween and Christmas celebrations were huge in this neighborhood, and the tradition continues today. You can’t get away with just a few bags of candy – or else you’ll run out within a half hour. Everyone participates. During the Christmas season, one neighbor used to dress up as Santa Claus and the kids rushed to see him on his quiet cul-de-sac. We get great pleasure in being able to contribute to the success of our community. We’ve always done it, even before we opened our restaurants out here. When Isa was in pre-school & Mimi was in 6th grade, Joe was the F&B Director at a retirement community and asked to use the commercial kitchen for a school fall festival fundraiser at John Jacobs and the rest was history. Next year we moved to Mountain Sky & Lookout Mountain and continue, even though the kids are way out of school to support, still to this day. We have made friends and customers from that very first day that we still remain closest with. Never in a million years did we think we had so much support. The outpouring of cards, emails, decorations on our windows, facebook messages and financial help is amazing. For any of you that know us, we would never ask and Joe will have a fit when he comes to. We really have to thank you, I don’t know how we would ever get through this without it, especially if his rehabilitation and medical needs go into the new year. We are hoping my dear Joe will recover and life will be back to normal but it will sure take a while. We have been through so many challenges in our almost 30 years together and made it through all the hurdles. We raised two beautiful girls, and have a wonderful son in law & grandson, not to mention all our great dogs & cats over the years. We will get through this one too. She will to wait to open Charr because she doesn’t have the strength to run all three, especially without Joe by her side. At the writing of this, Joe is still, 6 weeks later in ICU on a ventilator. However, he’s getting slowly stronger day by day. Still unable to speak and without being able to have his family by his side makes it the hardest. July is NOT the time to plant a tree! But it IS the time to PLAN to plant a tree! To continue with the analogy of trees and children...it has been said that the three most traumatic events in a child’s life are: the death of a parent, divorce of parents and moving. Trees are similar. Transplanting is a particularly dire event in a plant’s life. To that end, it must be carefully considered. In our climate, transplant season begins in November and ends at the beginning of May. These are not only the coolest times of the year but are the slowest growing periods, similar to why families normally relocate during the summer while children are not in school and are languishing. Do not listen to anyone who tells you that you can transplant during these warmer months; this can only lead to disappointment, heartbreak or death. Believe it or not, if planted at the same time, a 5-gallon tree and 24” boxed tree, will be the same size in 6 years. That’s because the smaller tree will acclimate better and its roots will develop faster. The larger tree will have a more difficult time adjusting and will take longer to set its roots. It’s similar to the adjustment speed of a child who is just about to enter kindergarten as opposed to one who is just about to enter high school when he or she moves into a new neighborhood. Buying 5-gallon size trees is a good way to get the most bang-for-your-buck, allowing you to plant several trees that will shade the entire frontage of your property. It also is a good way to purchase more of a variety of specimens to yield a more interesting landscape. Additionally, this size tree is something that you can plant yourself, saving even more!

Moon Valley Women’s Club Service Project Announces 2020 Small Grant Awards

This year marks Moon Valley Women’s Club’s 50th Anniversary and we are pleased to report, due to donations and our work with the annual auction, funds gathered exceeded all previous years allowing expanded support of our community’s needs. Grants totaling $5,200 have been awarded to the following Club member sponsored organizations. The Magic Yarn Project, sponsored by Marcia Haarer, assembles and decorates yarn wigs and hats inspired by Disney characters for children undergoing chemotherapy. ($1,500 for materials) Sleep in Heavenly Peace sponsored by Lin Felix, is an organization of volunteers that constructs beds and delivers them, with bedding, to youngsters who otherwise sleep on couches or floors. ($1,400 for materials) Spotlight Youth Theater sponsored by Gloria Griego and Roseanne Boyle, produces plays and musicals providing youth and their families an environment where the individual is supported, teamwork embraced and creativity encouraged. ($1,000 for equipment) Constitution Elementary School’s Gifted Program, sponsored by Debbie Erbstoesser, is a STEM program (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) working with Title 1 students to create critical thinkers and enable the next generation of innovators. Teachers are currently supplying class materials. ($1,000 for supplies) Your Art Your Story sponsored by Marilyn Drake, works with adults and children recovering from the loss of a loved one though suicide. Free art classes are offered to foster healing and form a connection between those affected. They also work to promote suicide awareness. ($300 for art kits) In addition, early in the citywide shut down, MVWC donated $3,500 to each of the following community organizations: The Desert Mission Food Bank - recognizes the link between hunger and poor health is undeniable and combats hunger by helping bridge nutrition gaps that negatively affect the health of community residents. The Area Agency on Aging- plans, coordinates and delivers services for adults 60+, adults 18+ with HIV/AIDS and adults 18+ with disabilities. At the time of our contribution there had been 1,000 weekly requests for food and hygiene items. Local Artist Brings Color to Our World During COVID

Appreciating the little things in life has become artist Christina Clark’s new mantra. Stuck at home and learning to slow down, she began noticing a lot of new things... it is hard to want to stay home all the time, traveling brings so much color to our lives, and Phoenix has so many bare block walls. Transforming outdoor spaces with colorful whimsical murals is one way Christina hopes to make our homes and gardens our new favorite places to be. Christina calls Moon Valley home and in June, decided to start her own creative services business, Christina Clark Creates, LLC. Starting a business during a pandemic isn’t an ideal situation. But Christina has been learning to pivot and paint since her youth. “My family would commission cartoon characters, birds, trees, etc. for around our home.” Christina said. “I even earned extra cash as a teenager painting murals for neighbors. The last mural I painted before moving back to Phoenix in 2019, was for a family I met and became close with in the Old City, in Jerusalem.” Drawing on influences from her extensive travels to 20+ countries, (Morocco, Colombia, and Egypt just since 2019) and her voluminous nature photography, Christina works with her clients to create customized outdoor / indoor acrylic

murals. “I am focusing my efforts on outdoor murals right now, where I can socially distance for the safety of my clients and myself” confirmed Christina. While there are many new skills to learn in running her own business, Christina has been most surprised by how thoughtful and kind her clients have been. “Several of my clients have had a special person or memory they want celebrated in the painting. One client wanted to honor her father who had recently passed away in the form of a hummingbird. It was so sweet, when I showed her the design she began to cry.” During the design phase, Christina works with her clients to make sure their mural represents them by providing a mock up photo of the design depicted on the client’s own wall. Christina is working hard to help her neighbors stay home and stay safe by brightening up their spaces. It’s an under statement that 2020 is unique year, with most of us driven to a new level of cabin fever. The Phoenix summer is the best time to explore other areas of Arizona and beyond. My wife and I escaped in July by spending a long weekend in Carlsbad, CA. Our choice was to drive, as we use the time to chat and play trivia games. We selected a resort hotel near the beach that provided beach shuttle service, had a pool and restaurant. Masks were required anywhere indoors, and some locations did a temperature check before entry. The pool had limits on the number of swimmers, so was hard to use at times. Dining capacity was limited, as only outdoor dining was allowed – so advise to make advanced reservations. The beach was great - no masks required as everyone paid attention to giving the necessary spacing. Overall a good reset in great weather. I’ve started to review northern Arizona vacation options and have found many good / affordable VRBO rentals in the north country. Friends of ours have been up north, and with the shorter drive – you can be in the cool pines in only a couple of hours. Plan on afternoon rains as the monsoon is just getting started. There are a few lakes but many streams that make camping, hiking and fishing enjoyable. A work colleague of mine just took a family trip back east. He noted that the airport seemed very safe, everyone paying a lot of attention to distance, wearing masks and just being considerate of others. He told me the aircraft was extremely clean, as they are wiping down the seating areas after every flight. I just noted that American Airlines has brought many aircraft back into service, counting that many of us will start choosing to fly. But what about those states with quarantine restrictions? A radio talk show host said some flights require you fill out a form to register entry into their state – but not sure how they can track every person. This becomes a personal decision on how to act / travel once you arrive. Pool Safety, it’s every minute! Keep a close watch around children around water.
