Cuddles from the Heart My daughter, Ashlyn Ferguson is 8 years old and heard us talking about the hurricane and how we all wished we could help and do more. We explained that many lost EVERYTHING and were in shelters with their family. She was laying in bed with her ‘babies’ and said that she wouldn’t know what to do without them. That’s when she said she needed to go through hers and mail them to TX! She wanted to give them to the kids because she doesn’t know how they could sleep without them. She said we will send them cuddles and ‘We will call it “CUDDLES FROM THE HEART” She decided to ask her friends and families for donations and made a goal that seemed so large of 200! We posted it on FB, asked neighbors, asked friends, made lots of pickups and Ashlyn just sent off 472 stuffed animals! And she’s still going!

That proverbial Bucket List, with its places to visit and things to see. So many of us Moon Valley residents have them, as do others worldwide. But what gives us a leg up, when it comes to metropolitan Phoenix, is that we have our own book detailing many of the unusual, odd and/or unique places the area has to offer that should be included on our personal Bucket Lists. In Secret Phoenix: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure, author and Tempe resident Christine K. Bailey dived into archives, alcoves and adventures to compile a thoughtful guide for both longtimers and newcomers alike. “I want to inspire people to go out there and to find those (unusual) stories,” Bailey says. “Every city has sites that are just waiting to be discovered. Even if you’re from here, people seem to find something remarkable in all of the places mentioned.” Some of the sites she’s brought to life or which she’s been able to reinvigorate with words include the carving of the Phoenix bird adorning the entrance to what’s known as the old Phoenix City Hall downtown, on the southwest corner of South Central Avenue and West Washington Street. It’s one of her favorites. “Many people wouldn’t think of taking a close look at the Phoenix bird,” Bailey says, musing that possibly now some may venture to have a gander at it. Another favorite: The anchor from the World War II-era USS Arizona, now displayed in Wesley Bolin Plaza near the State Capitol. Some other places Bailey highlights in her tome include The Ostrich, a former speakeasy, now serving beverages and edibles that’s housed in the basement of Chandler’s San Marcos Hotel. Among other locales and places to visit: The Black Date-palm orchard, still towering over residences on North 44th Streets, south of East Camelback Road. Bailey quips it’s a rare variety of the fruit, grown almost exclusively in the area; The historic Wrigley Mansion, nestled on a hillside near the Arizona Biltmore grounds. Anyone can join the Wrigley Mansion Club for a nominal $5 monthly trial membership to sample the venerable structure’s delights; Mystery Castle, a three-story hodgepodge

realm of rooms constructed with an equally eclectic bundle of materials, located on the South Mountain Park foothills, at 800 E. Mineral Rd. It’s described as a labor of a father’s love for his daughter; also. The iconic San Carlos Hotel, 200 N. Central Ave., in downtown Phoenix. Just what do you want to know about its ghost? Some Arizona Republic newspaper articles reported the story about the jilted young woman staying there who jumped to her death from its roof. If you’re lucky, you might see her wafting spirit wandering the hallways. Bailey says she discovered these and many more must-see venues in the course of her nearly six months of area research, then spent another almost three months documenting her findings with photographs; then came the actual book writing. She laments she wasn’t able to include all her findings in this volume. “Possibly,” she says, she’ll be able to update it in a later work. The Chicago native moved to Phoenix in 1998, after graduating with an undergraduate degree in English from Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. “I remember sitting in my fourth-grade class; and the English teacher read us a poem … and when I first heard her read it to us, I was so inspired -- what words could do to create such an image in a person’s mind,” Bailey says. From that point onward, her desire to write remained ignited. And perhaps, that spark will kindle the desire among Moon Valley-area residents to examine Bailey’s book’s contents, then trek out on their own to cross off a few items from it which land on that proverbial Bucket List. It's Not Just About the Cookies

It’s not just about the cookies; Girl Scouts is about serving our community. My passion for reading lead me to focus my Girl Scout Gold Award project on developing a reading buddy program for the students at Moon Mountain Elementary School. Many of these children are from single parent homes and/or have parents who work multiple jobs to support them and don’t have the time, or perhaps the ability, to read to their children. It isn’t a traditional program, but one that was developed for the needs of this school to engross kindergarten students in reading. As part of my project, I gathered books and developed crafts which made reading a fun and engaging activity for the children. Volunteers were recruited from Thunderbird High School for 8 weeks last spring. The volunteers read to the kindergarten students in the afterschool program and did a craft with them. At the end of the program, we celebrated with fun activities such as using shaving cream as an artistic medium and each child was given a book of their own. This school year, the program was expanded to cover 16 weeks with weekly themes, hands on crafts and first graders. In addition, the Key Club at Thunderbird High School will take over this program so it can carry on. With the Key Club’s involvement it is my hope that other Key Clubs will start similar programs in their communities. The goal of my Gold Award is to empower young children by providing a fun reading environment using high school students as their role models. On September 7, I completed the requirements for my Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest and most demanding award that a Girl Scout can obtain. It takes planning, persistence and leadership to make a positive sustainable impact on our community. Last year only 33 girls in central and northern Arizona received this prestigious award. Along with other Gold Award Recipients, I will be celebrating this honor at the Girl Scout High Award Ceremony which is planned for March 2018 at ASU.

Organization is the Key to Seller Disclosures B Y K I M G E O R G E , L O N G R E A LT Y U P T O W N You may not be currently thinking of selling your home, but what you do now, can greatly affect how smoothly a sale may go in the future. Today’s buyer wants as many details about your home as they can get. As you probably already know, a seller is required to provide the new buyer a Sellers Property Disclosure Statement. This seven page document has a list of questions about the property that the seller is required to answer honestly and completely. Sellers are also required to provide buyers with a claims history report from their insurance agent, disclosing any claims filed within the last 5 years. Sellers are often nervous about disclosing certain things about their property such as a past presence of termites, roof leaks, plumbing issues, thefts, or other issues. It’s important to remember that very few homes are free from any issues, especially older homes. They key to disclosing these items that may potentially scare off a buyer is honesty and organization. Keep a binder or folder of any and

all repairs that you do on your property, as you do them. Make a copy of receipts, letters, permits, claims, or any information that is pertinent and keep these in the binder as well. If you decide to sell your home at a later date, this binder will be very handy in helping you fill out the disclosure statement by reminding you of dates, exactly what occurred, and how it was remedied. Having the documentation about a problem, goes a long way with a potential buyer when they can see exactly how something was fixed and helps ease some of their concerns. It also shows buyers that you care about the home and you care about being up front with them. It really is a winwin for both parties involved. Most buyers understand that homes can have issues, they just want to know that the home was taken care of and the issues were properly corrected. A little work now, can help create a smooth transaction and successful closing for you down the road.

A nip in the air and the leaves are changing colors can only mean one thing, Fall is around the corner. It’s time to open the windows, pull out the sweaters and boots, dust off the patio furniture and get outdoors. For me I also think it’s time to start the many art projects that continue to pile up in the garage and closets. All of those sale items you purchased last year in hopes of creating a lovely fall wreath, a Christmas gift, or just create an artist’s masterpiece that you’ve pinned on Pinterest. (For those of you that have never ventured on Pinterest….. beware, it is very addicting, but such a wonderful way to learn, play and get lost in time!!) My mother taught me many things and crafting and creating is one that I only wish I had more time to do. There is just something inspiring about glue guns, duck tape, florist tape, and an electric stapler gun to set forth and conquer your decorator itch. I hope to get something completed by Christmas!!! Regardless, look around and notice the clever Halloween masterpieces that are showing up in the neighborhood, the beautiful mums setting on front patio’s , the smell of cinnamon and apples simmering, and the great new pumpkins brews available. Fall is still the best time of year, unfortunately I mentioned to my husband just last week, it’s the best time of year in many parts of the world. I’d like to be in New York, Germany, Northern and Southern Arizona…. and the list goes on. But since we are here in Phoenix, get out and enjoy the many events that line the calendar right in our back yard. Stoll down the street and reacquaint yourselves with the neighbors you may have not seen for months and cherish this wonderful season.

SPLIT SECOND TIMING B LO C K WAT C H E R BY B L A N C H E LU K E S September 13, 2017, the kickoff meeting of the Black Mountain Community Alliance/Black Mountain Precinct (police) was very dramatic! Desert Horizon Precinct police personnel (many of who we knew from being in that precinct in the past) put on a program featuring the Phoenix Police Department’s “Use of Force” policies. They presented live examples of the four-step process police personnel use as they evaluate each potentially violent confrontation with citizens. Actually, there are up to eight questions a police office may use to decide which action or actions to take when confronting a suspect. Each decision point was outlined in great detail. Most of all, the police officers making the presentation wanted Block Watch members to know that their first priority is to protect the public, which, of course, includes themselves and perpetrators. They always want to de-escalate each situation to the point where decisions can be made and people can go about their business in a lawful manner. Sometimes that means a suspect being taken into custody so police and courts can sort things out. Safety to the public is uppermost in their minds. Deadly force is the last (and least wanted) of eight identified methods of de-escalation. The others are: First, assessment of the subject’s ability [to cause harm], opportunity [to cause harm], jeopardy [likelihood of causing harm to anyone], and preclusion [what other options are there?]. Second is verbal persuasion. Third are empty-hand techniques. Fourth is the use of chemical agents. Fifth is use of tasers or the Punch II. (These are not used to coerce people.) Sixth is use of intermediate control techniques like impact weapons such as flashlights, batons, K9s, shot guns, foam batons, stun

guns, and bird shot. Seventh is the carotid artery control (which requires calling the fire department to certify that a person was not permanently harmed, and eighth, deadly force which is used only if the subject is armed and is used only to stop the threat, not to maim or kill. Each of the techniques was acted out by officers and they showed us various weapons. It was quite a lively presentation and one Block Watch leaders are sure not to forget! The last part of the presentation included the statistics about police use of force. For every “Use of Force” incident, a report is submitted detailing the facts of the case. In 2016, only .08% of arrests involved force. 1.7% of bookings into jail involved force. The numbers speak volumes for how hard police officers try to avoid violence of any kind. We appreciate the community action officers that participated in the presentation. It really showed how sharp and focused the officers have to be to make critical split second decisions about what is going on, what is the proper action to take and then taking that action. It really is quite amazing and impressive. . Black Mountain Precinct meetings are always excellent sources of information about public safety issues. And delicious food is provided, this time by Tom Argiro Photography through partnership with the North Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. News from Phoenix City Council District 3 - PHX C.A.R.E.S. B Y C O U N C I LW O M A N D E B R A S TA R K The city of Phoenix will soon unveil PHX C.A.R.E.S., a new plan to engage homeless living in encampments, improve neighborhoods and help property owners learn how to protect their rights. PHX C.A.R.E.S., which stands for community action response engagement services, is a collaborative, proactive response involving the city departments most impacted by the increase of service requests over the past two years as the unsheltered homeless population has increased by 59 percent. Soon, the PHX C.A.R.E.S program will introduce a central phone number that will help residents, business owners and community members report homeless encampments. This will result in the city, first dispatching, certified homeless outreach professionals to engage and focus on stabilizing the people experiencing homelessness that reside in the encampment. The city will have at least one outreach team working seven days a week, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The PHX C.A.R.E.S. team will also begin addressing the needs of those living in the community around the camp and the city resources needed to restore the neighborhood through clean up and ongoing enforcement to keep the homeless camps from reestablishing. The new PHX C.A.R.E.S. phone line and the program are expected to roll out this fall. Our office plans to have at least one public meeting about the program – we will share those meeting details as soon as possible.

Saturday, October 14th 10AM – 1PM @ MVCC All neighbors are invited to the MVNA big fall event on October 14th. It’s a great time to bring your family out to meet your Moon Valley neighbors including your MVNA Board, MVCC, some of your local community leaders and our local Police and Fire Departments. G.A.I.N. event Sat., Oct 14th at 10AM to 1 PM, Moon Valley Country Club parking lot. This is our 6th annual G.A.I.N. event! G.A.I.N. stands for Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods and is a Phoenix Police Department community outreach program. We are expecting S.W.A.T and local police and fire department to bring their tools of the trade for display. But there’s so much more. Family fun activities planned are as follows. Free arts and crafts activities with a DJ providing festive music. New this year is a Bike Safety Rodeo for families (free bike helmets, limited supply). Kids can play in a bouncy house, color pumpkins and plant pots, and get their faces painted. There’s also a photo booth and a clown handing out balloons. There’s fun for adults also, with a dunk tank, display of teardrop campers, old cars, and police and fire vehicles. Bales of straw backdrop will be arranged for family photos, just in time for your holiday photos. There will be puppies for adoption, and Walgreens will be offering flu shots, and much more. We have a few “pay” items (cash only) that will raise money to benefit The 100 Club (in support of families of injured or fallen police and fire personnel). The MVNA Board will be offering up burgers and hot dogs for lunch. Also new is a dunk tank where you pay for a few balls to try to dunk one of our guests. Last there will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle (last year someone won $200!). FREE services are offered like Shred-a-thon and Drug Take Back (no sharpies) that will be hosted just prior to GAIN in the parking lot (NOTE: Shred-a-thon only available 7AM until 10 AM). We welcome surrounding community residents to attend; this is a fun event for the entire family. By Karen Huttenmeyer Thanks to great community support, Thunderbird High School’s 14th Annual Golf Classic and Auction Event was an overwhelming success with almost $21,000 raised to support the student body and staff at Thunderbird. The Caddyshack-themed Auction Event was held the evening of September 16th at the Solheim residence. It was a gorgeous night where over 100 guests enjoyed a silent auction, food and drink, dancing and a live auction featuring PING golf clubs, a Fender guitar package and an adorable puppy named Zoey. Over 90 golfers participated in the Golf Classic held at the beautiful Moon Valley Country Club the next afternoon. A big congratulations to the winning foursome, John Solheim, Eric Korn, Brad Minor, and Danny Sanford. Event Chairs Alice Starzinski, Kristen Solheim and Karen Huttenmeyer, as well as the Thunderbird High School Chief Parent Association (CPA) would like to thank the community, alumni, parents, students and THS administration for their support of this event which annually raises $20-$30,000 to help fund classroom and campus needs.

Chasing the S&P B Y G A R R Y M A D A L I N E , C O - C R E AT O R O F C O R E R E T I R E M E N T E N G I N E R R I N G W O R K S H O P S As an Investment Advisor Representatives (IAR), one of the most difficult parts of our job can be managing client expectation. When the stock market is seemingly hitting new highs every week, it can be difficult for clients to understand why returns are not keeping up with the new highs of the S&P 500 or the Dow. Remember, if your portfolio has been designed properly for the long term, keeping up with the “Dow Joneses” is not part of the plan. Fiscal responsibility takes patience and an understanding that chasing the market is similar to a dog chasing a car, things usually end badly. A properly designed portfolio should be fashioned to protect you from the potential of downside risk that can eliminate years of gain and not designed to try and grab the brass ring. While we all want to find the next Apple or Google, the risk associated with this kind of investment strategy almost always leads to disappointment. With the new technologies and tactical processes available to investors today, the mantra should be “Win by Not Losing”. It is a proven fact that more risk does not make for more gain. In fact, today’s smart investors understand that less risk equals more long term gains and this mentality should be every rational investors goal. If your returns are lagging the market, ask your advisor why. The answer given should be that rules based safety overlays are built into your portfolio. These overlays are designed to capture most of the market gains but also to avoid large losses when the market inevitably drops. A portfolio with safety overlays gives you reasonable gains without big losses. Simple asset allocation and diversification will not save you from systematic losses like we experienced in 1987, 2001-2002 and

The West Valley is about to be home to the Phoenix Metro area’s newest entertainment venue: Stir Crazy Comedy Club featuring top national comedians. Back... Better & Stronger M O O N VA L L E Y M AG I C BY D E B B I E E R B S T O E S S E R It was a long summer for me, and not in a good way. I couldn’t do much more than lay around and rest. I chose to have elective surgery. I wasn’t complaining at the time, but my summer vacation stunk. I’d done a year of Paleo and Pilates and lost weight. The problem with losing that much weight this late in life (I turned 58 in September), is that the old skin just doesn’t bounce back like it used to. It turns out that I had 6 extra inches of loose skin and I chose to have it removed, dropping my pant size down to a single digit number I haven’t seen since college! We eat healthier now than we did then because we can afford to. Cheap food is bad for you! The vegan or vegetarian way wouldn’t work for us, because we love our meat! Therefore the Paleo lifestyle suits us perfectly. Our boys used to complain about whatever Paleo dish I made, until I didn’t mention it was a new Paleo recipe anymore. Once they said they liked it, I’d tell them. They finally stopped complaining. They had to admit that Paleo was not only good for us, but good! And then there’s Pilates. I write about it a lot because it’s been so life changing for me and I guess I want others to experience it . . . or anything that will make you feel as good as I do. I taught aerobics, trampoline and ab classes years ago. I’ve taken yoga, hot yoga, Zumba, step aerobics, spinning and mat Pilate classes, but nothing has been as amazing as the Pilate classes on reformers at the Pilate Barre Studio on 7th St. and Thunderbird, next to Charr. The soft music and camaraderie of these small classes has been my happy place. I depend on the mirrors to check my form. I’ve taught and taken classes without mirrors and there is a difference. In my mind I think I’m doing everything the instructor is saying and then I look and see how off balance and hunched over I actually am. As a rule, I hate mirrors and avoid them as much as possible, but when I’m exercising I depend on them. Bad form is almost as bad as not exercising at all and can lead to injury. Music is a bone of contention for the hard core Pilate purists, but the reality is that most of us need music to get moving. There’s nothing wrong with it. The fact of the matter is that there are many places to exercise and as our weather gets nicer there will be the great outdoors, but trying something new is good for us. It’s good for our body and our brain, not to mention our mood. A better mood improves both home and work life, as well as improving your heart and health. School’s in Session – And So Is Back Pain WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER Another school year means ... back pain? Yes, it’s true: Your kids are at risk for back pain during the school year. Here are a few of the primary reasons why they’re at risk and what you can do to help prevent it: Problem #1: Backpack (Mis)use Backpacks are a significant cause of back pain in children for several reasons. First, the average backpack is loaded with binders, books, lunch and all sorts of miscellaneous items. Add that up and strap it to your child’s back, and you’ve got a significant negative force – sometimes 25-30 percent or more of the child’s actual weight. Struggling to shoulder that heavy a load on a daily basis can lead to postural compensations (leaning forward, leaning back, etc.) and other issues that can lead to back pain. What You Can Do: The American Chiropractic Association suggests backpack weight be no more than 5-10 percent of a child’s bodyweight. Weigh your child’s fully loaded backpack; if it’s above 15 percent, talk to them about how to reduce the weight. Does every textbook need to be brought to / from school every day? Are online versions available? Can copies be purchased / rented? Is a rolling backpack a better option? Problem #2: Sitting Around After 2-3 months of blissful leisure, kids return to the classroom essentially full time. Instead of running around outside all day, they’re confined to desks from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., depending on their age. Now consider the average school desk for a moment – not exactly a massage chair. More likely hard plastic or wood, with no real options for adjusting height or anything else. No wonder a recent study found nearly six in 10 schoolchildren ages 12-15 reported back pain in the previous year, with “remaining seated at school” a primary cause. What You Can Do: Obviously you can’t do much about your child’s desk size / height at school, but you can certainly do something about it at home, which is where kids progressively spend more and more time doing homework and studying. Make sure your child’s desk is appropriate for their size in terms of height, space for their legs / thighs under the desk, and room to “operate” on the top of the desk. If they have a computer, make sure the keyboard is positioned correctly so their shoulders don’t slump / roll forward when typing. Also ensure that they aren’t bending their neck up or down to look at the monitor. Finally, select a comfortable desk chair that can be adjusted, provides good support for their entire spine, and helps meet the above requirements regarding monitor and keyboard positioning. Problem #3: Stress Levels It’s said summers are stress free, and your kids deserve it after a long, productive school year. But then school starts up again, which can increase the entire family’s stress levels exponentially. As adults, we’re much better (with exceptions) at handling stress than kids are, which means the school year can create significant angst for children. And what’s a major contributor to back pain: stress! What You Can Do: As parents, we can teach our children stress-reduction techniques and put them into practice throughout the school year. Adequate sleep is a must, as is a balanced diet. Scheduling their day, including homework and free time, is key to both keep kids on track with their schoolwork and also let them enjoy some moments of respite during what can be a hectic day. Encouraging them to communicate with you openly and honestly during times of stress builds the parent-child bond, and in terms of stress, it lets them release their frustrations, rather than keeping things bottled up. And the most important stress-reduction tip: Don’t sweat the small stuff! If they’re done with their homework for the day, let them enjoy their electronic devices / TV for awhile. It won’t destroy them ... not like stress can. Don’t let back pain limit your child’s potential. Talk to your chiropractor about these and other causes of back pain, and how you can limit your child’s risk. After all, don’t all children deserve a pain-free school year (and every day in between)?

Skyline Wish Builders - Building Dreams and Granting Wishes One Child at a Time BY JIMMY SADRE A charity I believe in… I was looking for a charity had an impact in our local community. I thankfully found Skyline Wish Builders. My family has participated in the gift wrapping sessions, and we have witnessed how powerful their efforts are…I encourage you to continue reading and learn about your local Moon Valley neighbors making a difference for so many others… The Birth of a Wish... Within the last 36 years Skyline Builders & Restoration Inc. has made a commitment to support the community around us. Early on, many of our employees’ children were still young, which meant supporting scouting troops, parent teacher organizations, food drives, children’s sports leagues and local church activities. As the children grew, so did the company, and our need to make a bigger difference throughout our community. In 2006, Skyline Wish Builders started with a partnership with the Glendale Elementary School District to sponsor families throughout the Christmas season. Through our sponsorship we gave every family one wrapped toy for each child in the household ages birth to 18 years old and a gift card for food and household supplies. What started as a way for Skyline Builders & Restoration to give back, has grown

into a cause that truly makes a difference and an experience that we look forward to every year. Last year Skyline Wish Builders sponsored 504 families and 1898 kids. Importance of Orthotics BY D R . JA M E Y R E I CH OW, D.C . Every sound structure has one thing in common: a strong foundation. The foundation acts to balance and support the weight above it. Not surprisingly the body is a structure and it requires a sound foundation. The body is also a biomechanical kinetic chain. This means that improper movement in one joint will interfere with proper movement in other joints. So it begs the question, “what part of the body acts as the foundation for the entire weight of the body and initiates the closed chain biomechanics?» It›s the FEET. Your feet may be contributing to your chronic low back, hip, knee pain or other lower extremity symptoms such as shin splints and plantar fascitis. Don’t let it. Custom orthotics may be all you need. Each foot has three arches. The arches support balance and weight distribution. They also allow for proper pronation and supination of the foot which is required for walking, jogging, and running. However these arches are susceptible to collapse creating improper posture, an imbalance in weight distribution, and causes excessive pronation or supination. Buying a Home Today is Easier Than You Probably Think BY TOM BO NE T TO, T HE LEND IN G COACH I hear frequently from potential buyers in today’s market – and many are fearful of taking that leap into homeownership. Some are intimidated by the process, expecting a never-ending slog through their financial history. Actually, the home buying experience can vary depending on your preparation, and the team you have at your side. The lender you choose, the real estate professional involved, and other factors can make a big difference when buying a home. You may even know someone who’s recently been though a less-than-pleasurable home buying experience, and you may be apprehensive about the process. I’ve got some good news….buying a home today is easier than you probably think. The key is understanding what it takes to get approved for a mortgage, and being properly prepared. These things will make all the difference in the story you will soon be telling your friends! First Things First: Get Pre-approved: One of the best ways to ensure a smooth home buying process is what you do before you begin your home search. First, check your credit report and know your credit scores. Taking this step early in the process will tell you which loans may work better for you. Checking your credit will also give you time to clear up any possible errors or issue you find. Mortgage pre-approval, without the pressure of a closing date, is easier than trying to engineer a full approval from the ground up. And having a pre-approved mortgage means you can close faster when you’re ready to buy. If you’re pre-approved, you will have less to worry about when you begin your home search. You will know you’re a qualified buyer, and your offers will get more respect from sellers and their agents. Loan Approval Guidelines Have Loosened: The good news? Loans originated in May 2017 increased to more than 70 percent from the prior year. This is great news for homebuyers, as it means more approvals for mortgage applicants. A common myth is that most folks buying or refinancing a home have a near-perfect credit score. In reality, the average FICO score on all closed loans is 723, and for FHA mortgages, it’s just 684. Many homebuyers are purchasing homes with considerably lower scores. Mortgage Approval is Now Easier: Changes in the mortgage industry are making it easier for applicants to get approved and buy homes. Recently, the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau (CFPB) determined that of the millions of consumers with medical collections on their credit reports aren’t as likely to default on future credit accounts as those with other types of collections. For this reason, many loan programs now treat medical debt differently. Another major reason that homebuyers put off buying a home is that they think they don’t have enough money needed for their down payment. In fact, many programs require very little down -- from zero to five percent. Even better, down payment assistance programs can help with grants or loans. Many who qualify have no idea this kind of help exists. They key takeaway here is to find the right lender that can walk you through the process to make the transaction as easy as possible!

All members will receive a copy of our membership directory which is published in October. The final cutoff for members to be included in the membership directory and on activity group lists is fast approaching. We will have our next luncheon on October 12th at Du Jour Restaurant at the Arizona Culinary Institute. Our host for the program will be Chef Robert Wilson, President/Co-Founder of the ACI. He has over 30 years of experience as an award-winning chef and educator. He will be giving us a short tour. ACI was established in 2001 and has won various awards over its many years and is nationally accredited and is considered one of the top 10 culinary schools in the U.S. Luncheon attendance is open to our members and their guests. WHY EVERY HOMEOWNER NEEDS AN ESTATE PLAN

B Y L I B B Y B A N K S , T H E L AW O F F I C E O F L I B B Y B A N K S , P L L C Many people, when they hear the words “estate planning,” don’t think it applies to them. “I don’t have an estate to plan!” they may say. I think this comes about from the use of the word estate. It makes us think of the show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous where Robin Leach showed us massive estates and talked of the excess spending by the ultra-wealthy. But according to Merriam-Webster, the simple definition of estate is “all of the things that a person owns.” Thus, your estate is the sum of your stuff: your home, your bank accounts, your stocks and bonds, your cars and boat, and your personal property. Big or small, most adults have an estate of some sort. When you buy a home, it is part of your estate. You need to have a plan to take care of this asset you have put time, money and your heart into! One of the first things I talk to clients about is planning for incapacity. What will happen to your home if you become incapacitated and are unable to handle your own finances? Who will pay your mortgage, keep the electricity on and keep things running? If you need the money from a sale of the house, who will sign the listing agreement or the deed to transfer title? With a proper estate plan, you will have appointed someone to take care of those things and they will have the estate planning documents they need to take care of your home, sell it, and take care of you. Second, what will happen to your home when you die? Without a proper estate plan, it might not go to who you want to have it. Here’s an example: If you are married and have children from a previous marriage, and your home is only in your name, are you aware that your children from the previous marriage are entitled to your interest in the house? Your spouse may only be entitled to his or her own community interest in the home. If you want your spouse to have the home, you must have an estate plan that provides for that. If you want your spouse to have the house, but want

your children to share in the proceeds after your spouse is gone, you can’t do that if you don’t have a plan. Without an estate plan, if you pass away first, it’s up to your spouse to decide where the proceeds go. If your spouse doesn’t have an estate plan, the law says that the house or the proceeds goes to his or her heirs, whoever that may be – but it isn’t going to your children without a written plan. For a single person with more than one child, it is important to have a Will appointing who will handle the estate. Without a Will, all three children have an equal right to serve as personal representative of your estate. If they all agree on who should serve, no problem. But if there is any disagreement, it could cause delays in getting control over your affairs and hard feelings among your children at a very difficult time for them. A good estate plan can also help you avoid court proceedings called probate. A Will alone won’t do that, because a Will doesn’t transfer title to your home on your death. The Will only directs who will get the property, and appoints a personal representative. In most cases, your personal representative will have to apply to the court to be appointed and officially authorized to handle your “estate.” Only after they are appointed will they be able to transfer your home or sell it and distribute the proceeds. An estate plan is a necessity for all homeowners! My office offers a free consultation to assess your situation and discuss what kind of estate plan is right for you. Giving Back While Hopping Down the Bunny Trail Did you know that rabbits are the 3rd most surrendered and euthanized animal in our nation’s shelter system? Recently, I had the chance to learn a lot about taking care of a bunny. That is because one of the philanthropies that Boys Team Charity North Valley League supports is Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary or TTAS. Founded in 2008, TTAS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the compassionate care of companion animals. Their mission is to rescue, shelter, rehabilitate and find a forever home for every animal that finds its way to them. Their goal is to provide these animals an amazing life while they are at the sanctuary. Each animal has a home with TTAS until they find them the perfect family. Tranquility Trail is the largest domestic rabbit sanctuary in Arizona and is the only rabbit sanctuary open to the general public 7 days a week. They welcome visitors on a daily basis so you can learn how to take care of a bunny before you bring one of your own home. They are located at 7741 East Gray Road Suite 2, Scottsdale, AZ 85260 and their website is: http://www. tranquilitytrail.org/. As part of the volunteering, I first had to attend orientation. I learned some new and different things about bunnies. Did you know that they can be potty trained and that they are supposed to live indoors? Also, baby bunnies are really messy until they are spayed or neutered. Bunnies are also very cute. Some have long hair and some have short hair. Some fur is straight and some fur is fluffy. All I wanted to do is pick them up, but I learned, you shouldn’t. Since bunnies are a prey animal, they really don’t want to be picked up. It makes them feel uncomfortable and when you think about it, you can understand why. They want to be close on the ground where they can get shelter in case something wants to make them their dinner. You need to get down to the ground and be on their level, not bring them up to you. I also found out that a rabbit’s teeth continuously grow, so they need to always be chewing to grind their teeth down. They need hay 24 hours a day. The real work for volunteering is cleaning the bunnies living areas. I cleaned their litter boxes, swept and put down new bedding for 3 different bunny homes. I also needed to be sure and put everything back where it was. I found out rabbits like schedule and routine and they like things to be predictable. That would go back to being a prey animal. When I was there, there were around 60 bunnies that all so were adorable and happy. I really enjoyed

the opportunity to learn about TTAS and what they do for our furry friends and give back at the same time. The Modern Powder Room DESIGN SOLUTIONS BY ROBERT ALAN MINOR The powder room is one area of the home that can be the most adventurous and dramatic. Because it is usually a small space, it’s the perfect environment for a striking theme that would be over the top in a larger room. Let’s look at some trends in powder room design. The classic pedestal sink has been redefined and improved with larger counter space, designer finishes and textures, vibrant colors, matching coordinated suites, integrated towel bars, and new materials like metal, stone, and glass. This is the new generation of pedestals, and a perfect solution where storage is not an issue. Another trend that has grown in traditional settings is the freestanding vanity. This can be a new piece of furniture, or an antique. When selecting this type of vanity always make sure it will fit through the bath door, accommodate a sink and have room for required plumbing parts. Vessel sinks continue in popularity. They can be particularly imaginative by utilizing ceramic, stone, glass, metal, wood - or combinations of more than one material for a distinctive custom look. Vessel sinks look like large bowls. They can either rest on the counter or be slightly recessed. Simple, or highly decorative, these vessels become an artistic focal point of the powder room. For vanity tops, natural stone & quartz continue to be the high end choice. New quarries have given us beautiful exotic granites and stone at competitive prices. Be sure to check out honed, satin and tumbled finishes. Technology now makes it possible to offer a wide variety of edging options: bullnose; beveled; square; chiseled. On one recent project, I used a tempered glass counter top paired with a glass vessel sink - practical no, but definitely eye catching! Undermount sinks are still very popular especially when paired with granite or quartz surfacing. With an undermount sink the vanity top becomes the focal point instead of the sink. If you choose a vessel sink, consider a simpler design so that it doesn’t overpower the counter top. For an adventurous look, and contemporary feel, stainless steel sinks have made a presence in the bathroom. Bath hardware and accessories now have many new sophisticated finishes. Remember, this is JEWELRY for your bathroom. While nickel finishes remains popular, more consumers are choosing pewter, gun metal, wrought iron, copper, and oil-rubbed bronze. Increasing in demand is the classic favorite polished chrome. This

can either have a contemporary or vintage look. Polished brass seems to be less in vogue than in previous years. Look for a beautiful new take on gold….a satin or brushed finish in a softer color tone. Wall mount faucets are being chosen for many upscale bathrooms. This makes the faucet more individual, interesting and less traditional. Even the toilet has been refined and improved. New designs promote energy and water conservation with improved efficiency. The “comfort height” toilets are comparable to the average seat height of a chair. Once you try this you will be amazed at the difference it makes. This is especially true for older or the physically challenged consumer. Traditional design will always be with us, but its popularity has given way to more transitional and modern styles. Minimalist and industrial contemporary design is gaining in the market as younger homeowner’s desire a more streamlined look. As for future trends, there is an ever-growing demand for European products in the United States due to their design, style, simplicity and ergonomic technology. These products can be easily mixed and matched for an eclectic look. New offerings from Europe include richer wood tones, natural and even rustic shabby chic finishes. Contemporary styling does not always generate a cold feeling! The powder room may be the smallest area in your home, but bathrooms don’t need to be predictable. Accessorize with dramatic art and sconces. Install dimmers on ALL lighting. Consider designer wallcovering or a bold paint color. If you are replacing your flooring, look at installing natural stone, porcelain, ceramic or wood. Make sure you check out glass tiles and mosaics for decorative accents and backsplashes. B Y C A R O L I N E E AT O N C L A S S O F 2 018 For many years, I have driven down Glendale Avenue and seen a bustling garden located just west of Central Avenue. I have always wondered what this garden was as there were always so many people harvesting, planting, and tending to the garden; it wasn’t until I joined National Charity League, Inc. Moon Valley Chapter that I learned that this was called “Growing Together …A Giving Garden”. When you walk up, you will find a garden filled with passionate volunteers and dedicated gardeners. The garden’s mission is to provide food for local charities, such as food banks, with fresh fruits and vegetables. I started volunteering at this garden when they moved the garden adjacent to Living Streams Church, which is where I attend church. When I saw this garden on the list of our chapter philanthropies, I was immediately drawn to their mission which states, “Our neighborhood brings together the gifts of our community to inspire hearts, plant seeds and sustain hope by growing, feeding, educating and nourishing the body and soul… using our hands and our hearts to serve others.” I was very excited to serve at a place that brings together the community and extends their care to so many people in need. From the first time I worked there, I saw the success of such an amazing place and felt how much love each person has for the people they serve through the garden. As I’ve continued to serve at the garden, I’ve learned so much from the people who run the garden; as my mom says, “They each have such unique gifts and bring them together in such an amazing way that genuinely impacts the community.” Observing how well everyone works together to plant a tree or uproot a bed of lettuce during harvest season has shown me the importance of learning to work well with other people, thus accomplishing amazing things. This garden not only provides nourishment to many people in unfortunate circumstances, but also touches the heart of each person who steps foot on to the property. GFWC Paradise Valley Woman’s Club joins other members of the General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) as a unified force, dedicated to strengthening their communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. Club members have been active by supporting the arts, preserving national resources, advancing education, promoting healthy lifestyles, encouraging civic involvement, and working toward world peace and understanding. Projects include assisting homeless shelters, veterans, the elderly and programs like Blue Star Mothers and Honor Flights. Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and March of Dimes, as advocates for children, have received club support. A recent project resulted in the donation of 36 “Coping Skills Bags” for Child Crisis Arizona. These draw-string bags are filled with contents given to kids - to help them deal with their emotions from the trauma they left behind. Club meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month at 11:30 at the North Mountain Visitor’s Center, 12950 N. 7th St. Prospective members & interested guests are invited to attend. Virtual Blockwatch THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON

I recently attended a local networking meeting where the guest speaker was a Community Action Officer from the Phoenix Police Department. He was talking about a relatively new program called “Virtual Block Watch.” The gist of the program is to utilize home security cameras in an organized fashion to make our neighborhood safer. If you have outside security cameras there is a good possibility if a crime is committed near to your home, your cameras may have captured something of value to be used in apprehending the criminals. If you were a fan of the series “24” that was so popular a few years back, where the techies could access every security camera in a large city and follow the terrorists in the commission of a plot or getaway, this is not that sophisticated. But, if you have registered your cameras with the police department and a crime has been committed close to your home the police might discern that you may have captured something they could use. Then they would contact you and ask to look at your recording. There will be no “live feed.” The police are not going to commandeer your system remotely and surveil the neighborhood. They are not going to look at footage inside your home. However, if you have cameras at your business, they would look at interior shots if a crime had been committed on the premises. The whole idea of “Block Watch” is that the citizens become the eyes and ears of the Police Department. If something nefarious is going on in your neighborhood a simple alert to the Police is very helpful. They cannot be at all places at all times, but with the help of concerned citizens they can be much more effective. With “Virtual Block Watch” the idea is to have a web of registered cameras which may have recorded valuable information that is accessible should the need arise. If you decide to participate, you start by registering your camera system. A police technician will make arrangements to evaluate your system and make suggestions on how to optimize its effectiveness. Obviously, they cannot recommend specific brands or places to buy them, but otherwise their counsel will be very helpful. If you are thinking about installing a home system the big box stores have several systems at very reasonable prices. Also, we have one of the largest electronic stores in the nation within a few miles of Moon Valley offering a multitude of options. Hooking one up is no more complicated than setting up cable TV. If you are not comfortable with installing a system yourself, ask around. I bet your neighbors can recommend someone and a query on “Nextdoor Moon Valley” will result in lots of responses. SMOKEY LAPSANG PECANS PERFECT SNACK FOR GAME NIGHT B Y O L I V I A W I N G E R T, C O - O W N E R S O U V I A T E ATM Football season is here again - and while tea may not be quite so popular to pour a cuppa during a game, you can surprise football fans with this healthy and tasty snack. Smokey Lapsang Pecans combine salty and sweet flavors with the smokiness of Lapsang Souchong, a famous Chinese black tea. This snack may be a far cry from the traditional game fare, but believe me, it is worth a try! 2tbsp. loose leaf Lapsang Souchong 6 tbsp. granulated sugar 1/2tsp. sea salt (you can also use smoked sea salt for a more intense flavor) 1/4tsp. ground cinnamon, 1/4tsp. ground allspice, 1/4tsp. cayenne pepper 1 egg white 1tbsp. water 1lb pecan halves Grind the tea leaves in a spice grinder. You should end up with just over 1tbsp. In a small bowl, mix together the ground tea, sugar, salt, cinnamon, allspice and cayenne. In a large bowl, whisk the egg white until frothy. Add the water, then add the tea mixture and whisk well. let rest for 15 minutes to allow the sugar to dissolve and the flavors to blend. Preheat oven to 300F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. After 15 minutes whisk the mixture briefly then add the pecans. Stir well to coat the nuts as evenly as possible. Spread the nuts on the prepared baking sheet. Transfer to oven and reduce the temp. to 250F. Bake for45-60 minutes until the nuts are crisp. Remove from oven and le cool Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in freezer. Serve at your next football party and score a touchdown!

Four Major Key Focuses BY D R . PAU L S TA N T O N , S U P E R I N T E N D E N T, W E S D Hello! I am Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. We’ve completed a productive first quarter of the school year and our students, teachers and staff are beginning a much-deserved fall break. If you haven’t already done so, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. There, each and every day, we share at least one good news story. As I have shared in the past, WESD is focused on four major key areas: 1 - Attracting and Retaining Teachers, 2- Student Academic Growth, 3 - School Climate and Culture and 4- Family and Community Engagement. This month, I’d like to share our three initiatives related to Student Academic Growth. The first is intervention for all students. We know that children learn differently and require different types of support in order to be successful. Our goal is to provide the right instructional strategies for students to help them meet their full potential. Daily intervention time has been built into all schedules in order to offer reteaching, intensive support, skill development, enrichment and extension of learning activities. The second initiative is the implementation of our new Inquiry Based Math c u r r ic u lu m. M a t h i n st r uc t ion in our W E S D c l a s sroom s will get our students really thinking about how math is used in our everyday world and will allow them to

apply and explore math concepts more fully. Teachers representing all grade levels and every school are participating in professional development to build upon their knowledge of math curriculum and effective teaching strategies. Math consultants Sue Larson and Jaime Evans are working with teachers and administrators to fully embed strategies which allow students to discover information, and truly understand the process, rather than simply memorizing skills. The third initiative is increasing opportunities for all students, including students receiving special education services, to more fully access general education standards and instruction. Through implementation of a more inclusive practice model we are actively working to insure that students of all abilities and skills are showing growth. To do this, we are incorporating differentiated instruction, accommodations and modifications and small group instructional practices to support learning for all students. Raising the expectations for good educational outcomes is a priority for all WESD students. Improving educational outcomes for all students also includes those who qualify Continued on page 30

for Gifted Services. Jason McIntosh, our new coordinator of Gifted Services, is actively working to accurately identify all students who benefit from gifted instruction. He is also in the process of examining our current delivery model known as Project Potential in which students receive gifted instruction outside of their general education classroom. However, the goal is to ensure that our gifted students receive the necessary instructional strategies to keep them challenged throughout the school day. Mr. McIntosh is passionate about meeting the needs of gifted learners and recently received the 2017 Curriculum Award from the National Association for Gifted Children for his unit “Feats and Flops: Innovating Solutions to Real World Problems.” The WESD is excited to have him join the team.

Finally, when students and staff return from fall break, they will begin Parent/ Teacher Conferences to review and discuss each child’s progress thus far. The conference is one important way parents can be involved in their child’s education. This conference allows the parent and teacher to connect and work together to ensure that the student is progressing and that his or her needs are being met. Together, with the strategies we’re focused on this year and the support of our parents, our students will show growth. We know you have choices regarding your child or grandchild’s education. Do I Really Need an in Office Fluoride Treatment Again?

B Y D R . M A N I K A PAT E L , D. D. S . We all know brushing and flossing is a must for keeping our teeth healthy, but another key to good oral health is fluoride, a mineral that helps prevent cavities and can repair teeth in the very early, microscopic stages of the disease. I am sure that as an adult it crosses your mind “Do I really need in office fluoride treatments? And my answer to you is “YES, as long as you have teeth and want to maintain them as STRONGLY as possible then, Yes, you need fluoride.” When teeth are developing in infants and children between the ages of 6 months and 16 years, we are very used to our dentist talking about getting enough fluoride., but as adults we benefit from fluoride also. New research indicates that topical fluorides - from toothpastes, mouth rinses, and in office fluoride treatments - are as important in fighting tooth decay as it is in strengthening teeth during development when you are a child. Just because the tooth structure is done developing does not mean you do not need fluoride anymore. You still need it, but for other reasons. Fluoride keeps the tooth enamel strong and solid by preventing the loss of important minerals from the tooth enamel. This is called demineralization. Some people have certain conditions that put them at increased risk of tooth decay, and so they will benefit from additional fluoride treatments. Here are some examples: • Dry mouth conditions caused by diseases or medications. The lack of saliva makes it harder for food particles to be washed away and acids to be neutralized, putting your teeth at risk of demineralization. • Gum recession and gum disease. This can expose more of your tooth and tooth roots to bacteria increasing the chance of tooth decay and sensitivity. • History of frequent cavities: If you have one cavity every year or every other

year, you may benefit from additional fluoride. Dental work present in the mouth, like crowns, bridges or braces: Some dental treatments put teeth at risk for decay, for example at the point where the crown meets the underlying tooth structure or around the brackets of orthodontic appliances. • Patients who are frequent snackers, eat sugary foods, or have a family history of cavities are at an increased risk of tooth decay. • Patients who have deep pits and grooves in their teeth are prone to dental decay. Your dentist and dental hygienist can help you know if your teeth would benefit from additional fluoride. It is easy to have this procedure done when you are in for your regular appointments. Professional fluoride treatments generally take just a few minutes. The fluoride may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam or varnish. Typically, it is applied with a cotton swab or brush, or it is used as a rinse or placed in a tray that is held in the mouth for several minutes. After the treatment, you may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair microscopic carious areas. Depending on your oral health status, fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six or 12 months. So the next time your dentist or dental hygienist recommends an in office fluoride treatment for you, just know there is a very important reason why they are recommending it and it all has to do with helping to keep your teeth strong and healthy and your smile beautiful!!! •

Did you know that the cause NORTH PHOENIX KIWANIS of most tooth loss is NOT decay? It’s gum disease. BY CHRISTOPHER BOYDA

BY DR. SIMPSON Dear Patient and Friend, First the Bad News: Recent medical research has caused many doctors to reach a startling conclusion: gum disease and heart disease are linked. And, since heart disease can be fatal, it is clear that gum disease can actually kill you. I’m sorry if this sounds blunt. There is no cheerful way to say this, and it’s not the normal thing you hear from your dentist. It does, however, place the usual dentist chant about brushing and flossing in a new, and suddenly urgent, perspective. The American Dental Association estimates that 8 out of 10 Americans have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. If this was any other affliction, such as AIDS or tuberculosis, it would be considered an epidemic! Most dentists think that it is just that. However, they also knew that gum disease would never be labeled an epidemic because, they reasoned, “no one ever dies from gum disease.” The worst that could happen is that you lose your teeth. Not pleasant – but certainly not life threatening. But that’s all changed. The American Academy of Periodontology recently reported that “[Recent] studies found that periodontal infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, the nation’s number one cause of death; increase the risk of premature, underweight births; and pose a serious threat to people whose health is already compromised due to diabetes and respiratory diseases.” Now the Good News: With advanced periodontal disease, the treatment is surgical. Surgery is never fun, of course, but periodontal surgery is almost always successful in controlling the condition, and it’s usually covered by common insurance plans. With mild gum disease, there are very effective non-surgical procedures we use in our office. These, coupled with improved dental hygiene, can virtually halt the spread of the disease in its tracks. In a land out west in the State of Arizona there is a City with the Name ‘Phoenix’ – Now, Phoenix has been a city renowned for hot summers, mild winters, beautiful sunsets, numerous golf courses but there is one more element that has the entire city buzzing – and that is the famous North Phoenix Kiwanis Club. We feel more people are directly impacted by the continuing community charitable efforts of these 28 Kiwanis members than all the other aforementioned factors. Here is a general summary of some of the activities accomplished by this mighty team. To get things rolling – because, as we all know, money keeps the world turning and greases the skids for program’s ongoing support. This small North Phoenix Kiwanis group sets up an annual ‘Walk-A-Thon’ and there are about 48 walking teams that are recruited for gaining pledges, collecting buckets of coins, and actually participating in the walk. This walk takes place at MetroCenter Mall and over a thousand people come together on Saturday, October 21st to show support for North Phoenix Kiwanis Club. This year we are looking forward to continued growth because of our active community involvement and partnering programs. Some of the community projects we support are provided here: 1. North Phoenix Kiwanis recently provided over 2,000 cans of food to the local St. Mary’s food banks. This food is redistributed to the needy families in the local Phoenix vicinity. 2. North Phoenix Kiwanis has ‘partnered’ up with Washington Elementary School District which has 36 schools with over 32,000 students). This is a mutual participation process whereby children are helped and North Phoenix Kiwanis is recognized around the Phoenix communities. 3. At Thanksgiving time North Phoenix Kiwanis provides 60 lb. boxes of food to the 100 most needy families identified in these elementary schools. Food boxes include turkey, potatoes, cranberries and all the other normal fixings for a wonderful American Thanksgiving Dinner. 4. When Christmas rolls around, once again North Phoenix Kiwanis Club resorts

In consonance with the true Christmas Spirit, each Kiwanian includes at least one ‘toy’ – You ought to see the faces on these little ones when they open them up – for most of the children this is the only Christmas ‘gifts’ they receive. 5. Organizations that are hugely underfunded also include: Battered Family Refuges, Children born to unwed mothers, Centers for displaced/abandoned children, and we provide a place to sleep for children without a bed. Oftentimes, children get meals at school during the week through Federally Funded Programs, but for the weekends, North Phoenix Kiwanis assists the ‘Kitchen On The Street’ organization. Kiwanis members occupy their Saturday mornings by filling thousands of food bags the children get to take home on Friday after school – so they have something to eat over the weekend. Not only do Kiwanians fill the bags, but North Phoenix Kiwanis provides funds to assist in purchasing the goodies. How can you help, you ask. Hope the following provides guidance. 1. Beatitudes Campus Celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation BY BAR BAR A WAR D Opportunities to explore the Reformation’s impact include movie, panel, music and worship This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, a momentous religious revolution that shaped theology, history and the lives of all people around the world and continue to do so today. Beatitudes Campus will hold a weeklong exploration of this important point in history and discuss how we continue to reform and develop our faith today. “Beatitudes Campus is a community that welcomes all faiths and denominations,” says Peggy Roberts, senior vice president of spiritual life. “The Reformation was a tumultuous and divisive time in history and transformed people’s understanding of their personal faith. We continue our quest to learn about all faith traditions.” The community is invited to explore the history of the reformation and attend the following events, which will shed light on how such a movement can still affect our lives today. The following events are free and open to the public. Movie Monday, October 23, 2017 (10 am in Luther Life Center at Beatitudes Campus) Join us as we watch a PBS documentary on the Life of Martin Luther, the man who sparked the Reformation. Panel Discussion Tuesday, October 24, 2017 (7 pm in Luther Life Center at Beatitudes Campus) Join us as we ask a multi-denominational panel how the reformation shaped their particular faith traditions and how reformation continues today. Organ Recital Friday, October 27, 2017 (2 pm in Luther Life Center at Beatitudes Campus) Organist Ellen Brown will delight listeners with music and hymns written at the time of the Reformation. Vespers Service Sunday, October 29, 2017 (3 pm in Luther Life Center at Beatitudes Campus) The Reformation celebration concludes with our campus Vespers service where in worship we lift up our thanksgiving for our reformed traditions.

Give Them The Holiday Of Their Dreams BY CAMI KING The Adopt A Family program is very special to us. Phoenix Children’s Hospital asked us to be a part of this program several years ago to enable them to broaden the program scope. Each year, at Christmas time, the hospital gives us names of families that are in need of Christmas. Each of these families has a child receiving treatment at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and are experiencing other difficulties in their lives. Through the Foundation, we have been able to consistently provide gifts, food, household necessities, and other items for each of these families. From 2006 - 2016, we have adopted more than 620 families. In 2016 alone, we adopted over 100 families! What a blessing it is to be a part of this program. Our volunteers love to give and this program gives them an extra special feeling as they bless the lives of these children and their families at this special time of year. This 2017 Holiday Season our goal is to assist at least 100 families from PCH Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders with a holiday of their dreams. These families without donors help will not be celebrating the holidays this season. Team Jaydie along with your help will allow these children to see the magic of the Holiday Season. Team Jaydie has been apart of this program for over 10 years. Our goal is to match donors with a family and allow the Holiday magic to begin. Requirements: • Child currently in active treatment at PCH for Cancer or Blood Disorder. • Only Receiving Assistant through this Program. • Social Worker from PCH meets and Screens each Family. • Team Jaydie matches Donors with Families. • Gifts are dropped off Dec. 1 between 4-8pm. • Families receive gifts Dec. 2 under supervision of Team Jaydie Members • Goal is 80 Families to be matched with Donors. • Each Family Member to Receive Clothing and Gift items. • Grocery Gift Cards for the Family to enjoy a Holiday Meal. • Household items- blankets, sheets, towels, cleaning supplies.
