One year ago, we were embracing the motto “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” per Governor Doug Ducey’s campaign to help Arizona through the Pandemic. And while we are getting closer to the end of Pandemic restrictions and anxiety about COVID, staying healthy and staying connected continue to be relevant to us as a community.

While we collectively express a sigh of relief that we have made it through the worst and have Christy and Payton at the book station increasing freedom and flexibility in our lives, there are many long lasting effects of this pandemic on our local community.

This is where the Society of St Vincent De Paul (SVDP) comes in . . . founded on April 26, 1946, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has a long history of helping the poor in Phoenix. From small beginnings, SVDP currently prepares and serves 3500 – 4000 meals a day throughout Central Phoenix to families and individuals in need.

While SVDP has many resources and programs running throughout the year, they are currently focusing in on “100 days of summer, shine by sharing”.

This campaign focuses on getting community support to help SVDP in their mission to feed, clothe, house and heal for 100 days of summer. This seasonal operation is dedicated to meeting the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors

when extreme heat threatens lives, utility bills increase, and families have more mouths to feed with kids out of school.

The Moon Valley Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) is fortunate to have a partnership with SVDP as they kick off this campaign.

One opportunity that NCL members, including my daughter and I were able to participate in was a food kitchen “drive thru”.

Alongside other volunteers, including the National Guard, families in need were able to drive thru and pick up books, food, water, and activities for their children. There were also tables where kids could stop in for tutoring help on schoolwork. It was an amazing and wonderful gathering of people assembled to help others and keep cars running efficiently through the assembly line.

Lessons Learned

M O O N VALLE Y M AG I C BY D EB B I E ER BS TO E SSER I think I can say that I’ve learned some valuable lessons. Sometimes the ‘tests’ came a little too late, but I will never make the same mistake twice. For instance it will NOT be my place to tell my grandchildren about the facts of life, Santa or the Easter Bunny. It’s not my business to do so and I’d be stepping on toes.

Besides, I learned my lesson!

Joel was only in 2nd grade when he started asking well thought out questions about Santa and because he was so smart, I thought he’d figured it out before his older brother. When I said that he was correct, he stopped in his tracks and asked, “Wait! What? You mean there isn’t a Santa!?!?”

Ugh! I’d so blown it! So a few months later, since I’d already destroyed their childhood by killing the magic of Christmas, I told the older two about the Easter Bunny. We kept Jaden blissfully unaware for a few more years.

While I hadn’t meant to kill off Santa, I was ready to get rid of the Easter Bunny. As a Christian I hated that the Big Bun got more attention than our Lord who the holiday is really all about! I’d already kicked the EB out of the house, telling the boys that Easter was about Jesus and the Bunny would have to hide his eggs in the yard, because he wasn’t welcome inside our home. I assured them that I’d take care of their Easter Baskets, not the Bunny. When I finally told Jon and Joel the truth, I was not especially kind. I remember my exact words were, “Really boys, a talking, walking rabbit? I’ve been doing your baskets and Dad’s been hiding the eggs!” Well, I had some very angry friends, because Jon couldn’t wait to tell his buddies. Ugh Again!

Not meaning to outdo myself, when they started asking questions about where babies came from, I was honest, to the point and maybe a bit too scientific. Jaden got bored and left the room. By the time I finished, Jon stood up disgusted and said, “That’s Gross! I’m adopting!” Joel chimed in with, “ewww” and they walked out on me.

I’ve always been one of those truth seekers, wanting to know the ‘how and why’ of

everything. Apparently my boys were not.

Lesson learned.

I help out in my husband’s office when needed and I’m off. Only a few people were rude on the phone, none of them from MV of course. When they snapped, “Who is this?” I’d respond with, “I’m the temp.” I learned that was the wrong thing to say! I guess they figured they wouldn’t have to encounter me again and could forget their manners and lessons they should’ve learned.

I eventually learned to answer with the truth and wow, their ‘polite’ voice kicked in. I also got brave enough to correct their pronunciation of our name. I’ve actually had the Erbstoesser name longer than any other. I had my birth name for 4 years, adopted name for 20 and married name for 37-next month. Yes, it all adds up to 61 and I absolutely hate our name being so badly mispronounced. I tell my students it’s; erb like the herbs and spices you put in food (without the H), the word ‘toe’ is in the middle and sounds like ‘stow’ and it ends with sir, “yes sir” and I do a salute. Kids get it, grown-ups do not. When I tell adults the same thing they say, “ErbTOEsser” … another ugh.

Anyway, I digress….I wanted to ask these impolite folks on the phone, “Didn’t your parents ever teach you any manners? You’re supposed to introduce yourself before you ask who I am.” But I didn’t. I didn’t want to make waves, I was there to help, but if everyone could remember the lessons they learned and actually use them…it would be a much nicer world!

I learned another lesson too. Claim my name; I’ve had it long enough!

I love July, and everything about it!! Not to mention it is my birthday month, along with my little sis’s, my step dad’s and Mom’s. We have celebrated July in full color for as long as I can remember, and always feel the “ Red, White, and Blue” in all we do.

As this summer gets under full swing, we are reminded that true patriotism is a huge part of our history and what a great time to celebrate.

It is fantastic to see all the “colors’ flying high in our community, and neighborhoods, not only the American flag, but many Arizona flags, and all the branches of the military.

Parades and some fireworks will adorn the small towns across America and Arizona, and the whole family will partake in BBQ’s and picnics eating their favorite foods, playing games, swimming and just enjoying the time together with friends and loved ones.

I am blessed again to be spending this month, in Northern Arizona, working and playing in the best summer spot in all of Arizona, Williams, “The gateway to the Canyon.”

Happy Birthday America!

Sapphire

Although big if she was truly a precious stone, Sapphire (663592) is pretty small for a 12-years-young domestic shorthair kitty at just shy of seven pounds and found her way to the Arizona Humane Society in May of this year when her previous owner unfortunately had too many pets in the home to care for. A great reminder of the importance of spay/ neuter and just how quickly our furry friends can reproduce.

Once in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™, it was found that Sapphire she has a sensitive tummy and possible allergies. Because of this, she has a special food that she is on now but would do best with a consultation with her future vet to ensure her belly is properly taken care of.

According to everyone who knows this adorable little lady knows that she is a very sweet but gentle and quiet girl who would rather chill and relax. Although she does love her space, Sapphire she will nudge her humans when she wants more pets and has lived with other kitties before as well. When she does want to have her alone time, she would love to have her very own cat condo to call her own and take little snoozes on each day.

Our Story: I stepped it up to lose 100 pounds

Last spring when lockdown measures began, I suddenly found myself working from our dining room table at home. No longer were my days filled with branch visits and meetings in the office. Instead, I was just a few steps away from the pantry.

When the Step It Up Challenge started in June of last year, I was weighing in at my heaviest ever. Having had back and multiple knee surgeries, recovery was important, but I was feeling the effects of my lack of physical activity. I realized this challenge was the perfect launchpad I needed to become more active. I reached out to my Arizona market colleagues on Microsoft Teams to recruit for a Step It Up Challenge team and presented friendly challenges to coworkers in other markets.

June in Phoenix is incredibly hot and I hadn’t been exercising regularly, so I started with morning and evening walks and looked for every opportunity to walk and talk during Webex meetings. My Arizona team, “ST8 48 Activate,” was so encouraging – always cheering each other on and sharing pictures from step adventures. Our team provided a safe space to share success as well as challenges we were facing, all while cheering each other on and gradually increasing our steps. I quickly realized the power of having accountability partners and people supporting you on your health journey.

Toward the end of the challenge, I fractured my foot and wound up in an air cast for six weeks while it healed. I had been making such great progress walking daily and I really felt like I let my team down. But my team understood and was supportive – and this really forced me to focus on my eating habits. I cut sugar and processed foods and began centering my meals around protein, vegetables and fruits. By December I’d lost 50 pounds. A lot of people have said to Continued on page 14

Rookie Mom: 5 Summer Activities Keeping My Little B-U-S-Y! B Y B R I G H I D C O N S T A B L E As an Arizona native, summer has never been my favorite season. It’s crazy hot and I always felt stuck inside the house watching movies rather than exploring the outdoors. Now that I have a 4-year-old daughter, summer has quickly grown into my favorite season. Because I’m a teacher, I get to spend this time off with my daughter creating activities to keep her busy during the summertime -- and I truly cherish all the fun I’m creating with her.

This year is also extra special because we’re eager to get out of the house after a year stuck indoors! With a month left of summer break, here are a few things our family has been doing to enjoy SUMMERTIME! Six Flags Hurricane Harbor: Right now, Hurricane Harbor has an insane deal for their season pass -- I quickly purchased a few. Get there right when they open at 10:30 a.m. so you can beat the weather pike and long lines. We don’t stay long -- maybe an hour or two, but staying cool with the fun slides and buzz of others makes it fun. Extra bonus: These passes get you into ANY Six Flags park until 2021 ends.

As You Wish: As You Wish is a paint on pottery place that plays the most relaxing music while you get creative. My daughter loves the silly statues that allow her to fine-tune her painting and fine motor skills. In the past, she would put whatever paint on it and not really care, but now she’s at the age where’s taking her time. Studio fees are $8 per seat, but there are Wacky Wednesdays at the end of the month where it’s FREE to paint. There are also a slew of painting classes if that’s the thing for you and your kiddos. As an extra bonus, you can extend your morning activities by splashing around at the Desert Ridge splash pad when you’re done gettin’ creative. There’s also a location at Norterra. Splash Pads Galore: So, it’s been the summer of splash pads for sure. When you live in Moon Valley, it’s super simple to default to Desert Ridge’s splash pad for a water time of fun. (Wednesdays are bubble days at the Ridge.) But, if you’re feeling adventurous in finding el primo splash pad, travel to Paloma Community Park in Peoria - this splash pad is a paradise to Arizona’s kids. Perfect size fountains for all babies, toddlers, and kids, there is a massive “water dump” of fountains that older kids especially get thrilled about. Paloma also has a covered toddler park, older kid park, fishing lake, ramadas for picnics and BBQs, pickle ball court with majestic views of the mountains. Deem Hills in North Phoenix is also another fun splash pad paradise if you’re looking to hit them all up this summer.

Phoenix Public Library Summer Reading Program: There will never be a time when I don’t express my absolute love for the library. This is Brynn’s 4th year getting involved in the summer reading program at Phoenix libraries. (Yes, babies have literacy activities, too.) Register at MaricopaCountyReads.org for their summer reading “Tails and Tales” summer reading game. We hit the library every Thursday, not only to check out new reads, but also pick up the To Go crafts. They are extraordinary! Not only do you get the materials for a craft, but also summer worksheets and games that last the week to keep your little busy. I even pick some up for my friends’ kids sometimes. Prizes for the summer reading program include an Arizona state park pass, Peter Piper Pizza free pizza, and a new free book. You’ll bet that I’ll be using my daughter’s prizes before summer ends. (Hello to free parking at Slide Rock in Sedona!) I prefer Agave Public Library over Juniper, but as long as your kid is reading, who cares! City Classes and Programs: Last year was such a loss because I always registered my daughter for swim classes through the City of Phoenix, but we couldn’t due to quarantine. This year, class registration went fast and swimming was sold out. We decided to go another route and actually go through the City of Peoria for dance classes. (Just an extra $11.) Brynn is registered at Rio Verde Community Center for a “Steppin’ Out Fairytale Ballet” which she absolutely loves. We go ahead of time because there’s a lake outside the community center where she loves feeding the ducks and geese. If dance isn’t your thing, there ARE still classes in so many other areas: sports, crafts, or summer camps. Even if you’re not ready to go out into the world yet, there are virtual classes available, too. On the Road Again!

Are you ready for Vacation?

BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S For many of us, it’s an exciting time. A whole year of isolation is coming to an end and travel is on the horizon. But are you truly ready for that trip? You may need to be sure your estate plan is in order before you hit the road. Here are some thoughts on getting things done before your trip.

Make sure you have guardians in place for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents in place appointing guardians, especially if you are traveling without them. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so. Which do you want your children to hear: “Your parents asked me to take care of you, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” OR “We’re not sure where you’re going to end up, but don’t worry, it will all be okay eventually.”

Review and update your existing estate plan. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to review our estate plan from time to time, especially as our families evolve. Certainly you should review your plan when things change for you or your spouse. But you should also review your plan if your children are older now, married with their own children!

Check your plan to see if it still does what you want, and that no one is included that you don’t want to get your assets. If the trustee or executor is no longer able to serve, or no longer capable, you need to change who will serve.

Get a Will, Trust and Powers of Attorney in place if you don’t have them.

Clients regularly tell me what peace of mind they have since completing their plan. Let your upcoming vacation serve as the impetus to put a plan in place!

Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage

and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family) in the event you and/or your spouse should need it due to illness or injury.

Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file a probate court proceeding. Also, this is a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans to be sure you’ve named the right people. Once you’ve done so, you will know your estate plan will work as you intended.

Secure or review healthcare documents. Everyone over the age of 18 needs certain documents (this is an important reminder for your children who have just become adults). They are: 1) General Durable Power of Attorney, which permits someone to be your agent to handle finances and legal matters if you cannot; 2) Power of Attorney for Heath Care, which gives another person legal authority to make health care decisions (including life and death decisions) for you if you are unable to make them for yourself; 3) HIPPA Authorizations, which give written consent for doctors to discuss your medical situation with others, including family members; and 4) Advanced Directive or Living Will to let your loved ones know what you want (and don’t want) at the end of life.

Organize your accounts and documents. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found. Then make a list of ALL of your assets and where they can be found, including usernames and passwords. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe, secure place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files.

Last, but not least: Have a great time! You are likely going to come back safe and sound, but you’ll have great peace of mind knowing that everything’s in place in case something unexpected happens. A BIG Congratulations to the Class of 2021 North Valley Boys Team Charity Seniors.

On May 2, 2021, 28 Graduating Seniors were recognized, for their 6 years of Community Service, hard work, accomplishments, & giving back to the community. These senior boys started Boys Team Charity, the Summer going into their seventh grade year. These boys have been volunteering at many organizations all over the valley of the sun. Some of the boys favorites were Backto-School Clothing Drive, Civitan house, Desert Mission Food Bank, Home Fur Good, Jaydie Lynn King Foundation, Mom’s Place, Packages from Home, and Pat’s Run. Many of these 2021 graduating Seniors, had over 100 hours that they had given back to the community.

All the Class of 2021 Seniors are going onto to further their education at the college level, in state universities, and out of state. One of the graduating seniors is going onto further his education, and play college football.

Many of these boys received college academic scholarships, and athletic scholarships for all their hard work in school. Congratulations boys on all your hard work in the classroom, & giving back to the community.

Every year the graduating seniors

plan, and work on a senior project to leave their mark in the community. This past Spring, during the pandemic the Class of 2021 chose Civitan House. While completing all their Senior coursework, these boys spent a weekend on the Campus Beautification Project, and Memorial Wall for the Civitan House. Early mornings were spent, doing yard work, raking, sweeping, planting flowers, painting walls, pulling weeds, hauling garbage, cleaning windows, screens, and re-sealing picnic tables. Class of 2021 is also donating a new swing set, which will be installed at a later date. Due to COVID, the Civitan House had not had work done there, in over a year. Needless to say, “ HAPPY residents!” Great job boys, putting in the work, when the community was really in need.

“You choose your mindset every day, choose to make a difference, and leave it BETTER than you found it.”

Thankful for my time with North Valley Boys Team Charity, the past six years. The conversations, had, life lessons learned, and friendships made will never be forgotten. Boys Team Charity is fantastic, highly recommend!

Feeding Kids for Free and Providing Job Opportunities for People with Special Needs Go Hand-in-Hand This Summer Civitan Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through various programs and employment services, will distribute meals to children in need at two Arizona locations this summer as part of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Meals served in the Phoenix area will be prepared by participants of Civitan’s ‘Cook-er-y,’ a culinary program at Civitan Village which is fully comprised of chefs with developmental disabilities. The organization is also providing meals to four closed Summer Food sites.

“There are many more locations handing out food through SFSP, but our locations are especially unique because two at risk groups, the special needs community and underserved youth, are truly serving one other,” said Kevin Gregg, the Cook-er-y’s Culinary Director. “Thousands of youth need food during these challenging times, and our differently-abled members need job support. It’s a perfect match.”

To be eligible to receive free meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are part of households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or Temporary Assistance to Need Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to receive free meals. Shaw Butte Trail: Dog days of Summer

“Our mom was a gym rat for 30 years before she realized it would be more fun to change her routine. Shaw Butte Trail is our favorite and we are happy to take her with us every day,” says Teddy. Along with brother Jax, they hike Monday through Friday. Teddy and Jax are rescues and mom Jill works with Pampered Pets, a service that takes care of pets while owners are away.

Teddy is a Lab and Pit Bull mix whose first owner’s family left him chained to a fence. When he was rescued by Jill, he was mesmerized by the views of Shaw Butte.

He actually stopped on the trail for a paws to take in the view. Teddy is often seen laying down on the trail patiently waiting while mom stops to talk to her friends. Jax is mostly a Plott Hound with some Shepherd and Rottweiler and came from Casa Grande. When the occasional siren from below the trail catches Jax’s ear, he delights other hikers with his infamous howl.

Jill credits her two furry friends for motivating her every day to get out and hike.

“We love that mountain. Not only do we get a cardiac workout, but this mountain gentles our mind,” Jill said. And she loves catching up with the other regulars. “It’s Shaw Butte Therapy Hour sometimes when we get into good conversations with each other.”

“We are well equipped with a water bowl, at least 2 water bottles, plastic bags, benadryl for bee and scorpion season, and bear spray for when other dogs are off leash,” said Jax. “Cool collars come on in the summer to help with the heat.”

I like to joke that I’ve gone from being a sugar addict to a catching-thesunset-on-ahike addict.

me, “I wish I had your motivation.” Honestly, I’ve always had the motivation.

But until I started the Step It Up Challenge last year, I didn’t have the discipline when it came to my steps or eating habits. The motivation got me started, but it’s the discipline and the healthy habits that have really seen me through.

Once I was back on my feet, I invested in some good shoes and was back to walking. My 71-year-old neighbor asked to join me and now we walk at least two miles almost every morning. I live about a quarter mile from Lookout Mountain. I’d hiked it only one or two times before, but now that I was lighter on my feet, I decided it was time to try it again. I now hike five to seven days a week and always try to catch the sunset. I like to joke that I’ve gone from being a sugar addict to a catching-the-sunset-on-a-hike addict.

I was 363 pounds when I started the Step It Up Challenge last June. As I KAREN RICKER approach the 12-month mark since then, I have already surpassed my goal of losing 100 pounds. My Arizona team has been so supportive and motivating to me throughout this journey – and two of my fellow Step It Up Challenge teammates have lost more than 40 pounds each as well.

One of my biggest motivations over the last couple years was when one of my direct reports passed away. She was heavy like I was (although that wasn’t the reason she passed) and we used to share weight loss tips and recipes. I can’t tell you the number of times I wished I could share this experience with her and I know we’d be cheering each other on. What’s feeding the obesity epidemic in AMerica?

B Y K AT H Y G L I N D M E I E R In 1971, Americans consumed about 2,000 calories per day. Fifty years later, they now consume an additional 500 calories per day with an increasing number of people classified as overweight or obese — a whopping 74 percent of adults and 35 percent of children. Unhealthy food choices, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle, have contributed to the obesity crisis.

Fats and added sugars, two areas of concern today, were not a major health issue a half century ago. The increase in convenience foods, mass-produced baked products and beverages with added sugar have led to poor nutrition choices and the obesity epidemic. Approximately 900 of daily calories today are from refined grains, potatoes and added sugars.

Fresh, High Fiber Foods on the Upswing Despite Americans’ growing appetite for junk food, some changes in the U.S. diet have been more positive over the last five decades.

Fruit and vegetable consumption — excluding juice and white potatoes — has increased 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Nutrition experts recommend that fruits and vegetables occupy half of consumers’ plates for a balanced diet. Fresh produce is high in nutrients and fiber leading to a feeling of fullness.

Protein Surges in Popularity A closer look at protein consumption in 2021 shows the average person consuming 50 more pounds of chicken while beef consumption has decreased.

Bean consumption has risen with trends such as “Meatless Mondays” and concerns about the impact of meat production on our planet.

The negative impact of meat production was recognized in the bestselling book, Diet for A Small Planet, written by Frances Moore Lappe in 1971.

However, little has changed in terms of reducing the adverse effects of meat production on our environment.

Eggs, once considered a source of high cholesterol and to be avoided, are now considered as an excellent source of protein when consumed in moderation.

Many Americans are upping their protein intake in the form of powders in after-workout shakes and smoothies, as well as fitness bars and other convenience foods with added whey or plant protein.

Milk Loses Favor, Other Dairy Products on the Rise Since 2000, Americans have cut back on their consumption of milk by 25 percent. Most consumers who do drink milk avoid whole milk and go for lower fat varieties. In fact, The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act 2010 limited school meals to offering only 1 percent white milk or fat-free flavored milk.

Dairy products such as low-fat and fat-free yogurt are very popular today, but were unheard of in 1971. Soy and almond milk, once limited to consumers allergic to cow’s milk, are now very common dairy alternatives. The consumption of cheese and yogurt has also risen dramatically.

Reducing Obesity Goes Beyond Food Choices Eating trends in the last 50 years offer mixed news. On the one hand, we are seeing higher consumption of unhealthy processed sweets and salty snacks, which are adding empty calories to our diet. Yet, we have also upped our intake of fruits, vegetables, beans and lean sources of protein that promote good health.

Trends in America’s eating habits will continue to evolve, but the one constant is our need for physical activity in order to stay healthy. Food and exercise have been called nature’s natural medicine and therapy and are readily available to everyone.

While eating trends will change with time, our need for daily movement, balanced with nutritious eating, will always be an essential part of maintaining a healthy weight.

Looking back over the last 50 years that is as true today as it was in 1971!

WESD to Host Support Staff Job Fair on July 19th: WESD is hosting a support staff job fair on Monday, July 19th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Arroyo I have discussed barrier free showers before and feel it is important to revisit this subject. As we get older or have physical limitations it is important to be able to get in and out of the shower with less chance of injury. Most showers can be turned into a barrier free shower.

The demand and need for barrier free showers has increased dramatically.

Everyone can benefit from a barrier free shower. Baby boomers have realized that in order to remain in their homes, certain changes must be made to accommodate aging in place. These types of showers are only limited to space and budget.

While smaller areas can be turned into curb less shower, a larger space makes for easier movement and accessibility for a wheelchair when assistance is necessary.

It is recommended that an aging in place specialist help you redesign your new barrier free shower. There are special concerns when designing any curb less shower. Design must take into account moisture control, floor construction so the water slopes to the drain while maintaining the barrier free design, shower head and water control placement, benches and grab bars. Floor materials must also be addressed to avoid any slips and falls.

As part of aging in place we need to make sure a person can enjoy their later years by remaining in their home. In order to maintain our personal independence we need to design our shower to work for everyone at any stage of life.

WESD Bridge Program Approved for Special Education: I am excited to share that BRIDGE, WESD’s Arizona Department of Education (ADE) approved educator preparatory program, was recently approved for special education. This makes BRIDGE the only program of its kind in Arizona.

The BRIDGE program is open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree who is interested in becoming a teacher and removes the financial and time constraints often associated with a career change. Those enrolled in the program work full time as teachers while receiving over 300 hours of job-embedded training. Aging in Place: BARRIER FREE SHOWERS

Arizona Sunrays Offers Lots of Cool, Indoor Fun All Summer Long Twinkle Two’s Dance Class Here’s a super-fun, adorable dance class that parents and caregivers can bring their little ones to. Children, ages 16 months to 3 years old, are invited to the “Twinkle Two’s” that introduces them to music, dance, movement, and sing along using lots of terrific props. These 45-minute dance classes are structured to stimulate coordination and listening skills, balance, creative movement, and motor development in the youngest dancers. Ballet and tap shoes are required.

Parent participation is also required but parents are not required to have dance shoes. The Twinkle Two’s dance class is offered on many different weekdays and on Saturday mornings.

Cost is $102 per month.

Kids’ Night Out on Saturday Nights On July 3 and July 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. the Arizona Sunrays will host their exciting Kids’ Night Out events for ages 3 to 13. Parents can enjoy a relaxing night out while kids will get to have their own Saturday night fun by enjoying gymnastics, dance, organized games, jumping on trampolines, obstacle courses, and more. The special theme on July 3 is “Party in the USA” and the theme on July 17 is “Olympic Games.” Cost is $40 for first child; $35 for each additional child. A pizza dinner is included. Advanced registration is required.

‘Supercamp’ on Weekdays Children, ages 4 to 13, will have a great time at the Arizona Sunrays’ “Supercamp” day camp learning gymnastics, dance, NinjaZone, jumping on trampolines, group activities, and playing water games outside in a 10,000 square foot courtyard with misters! Supercamp is offered through Aug. 9 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $89 per day or $336 for a full week.

Buying a home in a seller’s market THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON A Realtor friend told me the other day that it is not uncommon for newly listed properties in the Phoenix area to receive 10 or more offers on the first day. Many of these offers are from “cash buyers,” and almost always they are offering more than the listing price. This is especially true on moderately priced homes in the $300,000 range. The National Association of Realtors puts it at 5.1 offers per listing nationally with half of the sales being sold above the listing price.

How in the world does one compete in a tight market such as this? There are several things a serious buyer can do to ensure that they are successful in their quest for a new home.

1. Get Pre-Qualified. It is very important to understand what your budget will buy. Your FICO score and debt-to-income ratio also play into the equation. Get with a trusted mortgage loan officer and crunch the numbers. There should be no cost for this. There is a huge advantage to including a Pre-Qual along with your offer.

2. Be ready to move. When you find the right home, be prepared to make an offer immediately! A contingency of selling your current home could be a real deal killer.

3. Let your Realtor do the heavy lifting. They have access to the latest listings. They know the neighborhoods. They are professionals and this is their business. They have insights into the seller’s motivation that a novice may not have. Don’t do this alone.

4. Make a strong offer. Doubtful that you will steal a home in this competitive environment. If you do, there is bound to be a reason.

5. Be ready to negotiate. Flexibility is the key here. If the seller needs an extra few weeks to vacate, and you are willing, this might cement the deal.

6. Absolutely do not waive the home inspection. If the seller throws out your offer because you want an inspection, you haven’t lost anything.

You need to know what you are buying.

The more you can do to gain the advantage is crucial. Build a strong team of a trusted Realtor and mortgage loan officer. Together you are on your way to a successful quest. Good home hunting!

When buyers drive into a neighbor hood and there are junk cars, piles of stuff in the front yard like campers they will look elsewhere. Unless they plan to park their camper in the front yard. Those searching for a classier neighborhood will move on. So this means once the precedence has been set, one camper, becomes two, three and and more. Its like mold, it keeps growing. So if you live in an area where CCR’s restrict this, it is a violation. For every purchase of property in Phoenix, the CCR’s are an automatic inclusion in the paperwork signed at closing. In fact, if you check the guidelines at the City Phoenix, you will see the same restrictions. To avoid fines and neighbor unpleasantness complying with those guidelines provides good neighborliness.

At the City of Phoenix web site the Neighborhood Code Compliance is Chapter 39 . There are several different fines but none less then $500.

Talking about good neighbors. Another way to get to know each other in a more positive way is the up and coming GAIN Day. It started as a national event to get people out of the house and meet their neighbors. This last year we had ours on the 3rd Saturday of October and we had an ice cream social. It was so Simple. Get out your ice chest. Get a bag of ice and a selection of ice cream bars you like. As people come they grab one. As for the leftovers you have the joy of eating another time. How delicious is that!

Many times our Community Action Police Officer stop by and one time our newspaper lady stopped by. It is so fun to meet these people.

Brain Aging: Blame your diet

The brain is a remarkable bundle of neurons that directs every thought and function in the human body. However, D .N W , n.com C.M.T., D.C. 09 the reality is that no matter what, as we age, our brain ages, too. Sometimes, M T C C that just means our memory suffers a bit in our senior years; other times, our aging brain can yield more severe consequences in the form of cognitive decline or dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Do the foods we eat (and don’t eat) play a role in brain aging? You bet they do - and the diet consumed by Tsimane indigenous people of the Bolivian Amazon may give us a big clue. According to new research, they experience dramatically less brain aging (less loss of brain volume) compared to Western populations - you know, populations that typically eat the Western diet high in greasy, fatty, processed, refined-carbohydrate foods.

So, what do the Tsimane people eat instead? A diet characterized by essentially none of the above foods.

Their lifestyle is one of hunting, gathering, fishing, and farming, which means plenty of fresh, whole, unprocessed foods. Western culture has access to the same diet in general - we just choose not to pursue it, reaching instead for the countless cookies, snacks and fast-food items readily available to us.

Study findings, which appear in the Journal of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, make it abundantly clear: what you eat affects how your brain ages. Learn from the best (by the way, the Tsimane people also have dramatically low rates of cardiovascular disease) and eat more whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, fish, and other choices that give your brain – and your entire body – the best chance of aging gracefully.

The tunnel at I-17 between Dunlap and Peoria is once again open!

Thanks to park rangers and ADOT lights were fixed that were broken.

Debris was removed and then swept by a little street sweeper.

Both the north and south bank paths along the Salt River are closed due to a natural gas line that ruptured and caught fire on Sunday morning February 28th. The closure extends from near 16th Street on the east and Central Avenue on the west. The duration of this path closure has not been determined. We are holding out hope that the south bank trail can be reopened sooner than the bridge as it seems the fire was on the north bank.

Bike paths are cleaned and well maintained, most have lights for night riding.

Paths are getting more use. Helmet and blinky lights front and back is a good ideal. City parks have great paths and trails in an around them. Park Rangers are moving the camping people out. Giving tickets for blocking sidewalks and open containers of alcohol. Some are banned from the park for a month or more. This has helped a lot. Biking is now safer and more fun. Less things to dodge on the paths. Its not perfect but with 1,500 miles of paths there can be some discord.

Some tunnels get recluttered so write a note or make call to make a change to city official of your choice. Squeaky wheels get the oil.

NCL, One Year Later

WHAT IS THE “S.T.A.M.P.” PROGRAM?

The Statewide Threat Assessment and Mitigation Program, goes under the name of “STAMP.” Detective C. J. Wren of the Phoenix Police Department heads this new mission for the State. At the June 9, 2021 meeting of the Black Mountain Community Alliance, he described what the program covers.

On the news this year we have heard about threats to the lives and families of many elected officials, judges, police, firefighters, teachers, and other people in public service positions. Threats to schools, businesses, and other institutions and family members proliferate. The State of Arizona has decided to step up our assessment capability (as best it can) on people and groups who are fomenting violence. No other State in the Nation is tackling this problem to the extent Arizona is with the STAMP Program.

The program that has been set up is called MOSAIC. It will be used to evaluate and assess threats coming from people in (and out of) the state. Hopefully, it will assist the police in heading off violent attacks and assist in the prosecution of perpetrators. Authorities will check out the situation to see if the person making the threat seems to indicate he or she will carry the threat out. Detective Wren said, “Threats are prevalent in every aspect of our society right now. Social media has stoked threat mentality due to lack of face-to-face interaction.”

In the past, police departments reacted differently to reports of threats. Now the threats and resolution of each case will be tracked and shared statewide.

The Gavin de Becker MOSAIC program was the one that was chosen to assist Arizona. That company is best known for helping Hollywood stars stay safe.

This new system includes assessment categories of threats like: angry current employees, angry former employees, threats by university students, threats by

elementary and high school students, inappropriate pursuit of public figures.

This new program also will work closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on harassment, mental health issues, persecution for religious or political views, and on-line bullying.

Currently there is no reliable way to assess or compare threats, but it is hoped that the MOSAIC program will change that. Assessors are well aware that individuals can lie and use threat language as weapons against people they want to hurt. These incidents will be assessed, and the matter investigated, providing a safety net for innocent people. The opinion of the investigating officer is given less weight than in the past, because when threats are made, it is the person receiving the threat who gets to interpret its seriousness.

Across Arizona many police officers will receive training about the STAMP program and MOSAIC. Right now, the STAMP program has some of the most well-trained police officers and detectives in the state involved in assessing threats.

This program will also work to educate the public about threatening language and its legal implications. The program will also work with School Resource Officers statewide to educate and advise students on the repercussions of making threats and committing harassing behavior.

People experiencing harassment or receiving threats can report them by submitting a TIP at AZACTIC.gov/Report or to your Local Law Enforcement Agency.

Dear Harriet, Oh yes, there is a whole world of learning adventures online! Way beyond a simple Google search or click through Wikipedia. There are awesome websites that offer interesting college courses, philosophy, world topics, politics, life skills, gardening, accounting and all realms of academia.

Thousands of subjects. Right at your fingertips. Imagine immersing yourself in thought provoking topics, which after a few reads, will no doubt make you the hit of the next cocktail party.

For a few hundred dollars there are excellent courses at Master Class or Skillshare. But there are many quality, FREE opportunities to learn great things online too! Harvard, Yale, Stanford and MIT all have courses for free.

Get out your notepad, here’s where to find them: Coursera.org. brings a bunch of those classes together into one site, offering nearly 400 courses ranging from “Introduction to Guitar” from Berklee College of Music to “Constitutional Law” from Yale. Edx.org is very similar with vast topics to choose from.

For workplace and topics to bolster your career try Udemy.com. It’s mostly free or sometimes very, very cheap lessons from Art to Zoology. I have friends who became wizards at Photoshop from that site.

Khan Academy.org is a great place for subjects ranging from SAT prep to cosmology, art history to calculus. I’m told there are people who actually like learning calculus. Many kids use Khan to catch up after an occasional snooze in Physics class.

I know some of you just like the old-fashioned paper book. Online reading does save a lot of space if you’re traveling and always comes with a backlight. Just sayin..

Congress voted on July 2, 1776 to declare our independence from the monarch of Britain, King George III, and we observe this event on July 4th, our Federal holiday. Never has a country brought such a combination of personal liberty, religious freedom, and boundless opportunity for anyone to pursue their hopes and dreams. This was codified in the Declaration of Independence, signed in August of that year, and in the US Constitution, the foundation of our country, written 10 years later in 1788.

It’s curious that somewhere between 1 and 4% of the 2.5 million citizens in 1776 served in the Army or Colony Militia during the revolutionary war, but when teamed with 11,000 French and 12,000 Spaniards defeated the English. We owe our free status to the 40,000 brave early Americans who fought hard. There were also Patriot Women who helped the cause by boycotting British goods, producing goods to support the soldiers, and even spying on the British. Some women served in the Militia, disguised as men to help fight for our independence.

John Adams gave a speech in 1776 that successfully defended the case for permanent separation from Great Britain. Mr. Adams is also quoted as saying Independence Day will be the most memorable Epoch in the History of America.

He noted that succeeding generations would host great festivals, hold Pomp and Parades, and more. So as John Adam’s outlined – this is a great time to hold a BBQ with friends and family to help celebrate this momentous day.

Regarding July 4th Celebrations - a couple of announcements. There is a holiday car parade being planned though the neighborhood for Saturday, July 3rd starting at 6pm. If you want to drive your car in the parade, meet at Lookout Mountain Elementary School at 5:30pm. Our community held a couple of these car parades last year and they were well attended. It’s fun to get out and watch

Community Update. One last announcement regarding a MVNA special project. We hired a contractor in June that has just completed repainting the wall on 7th Street between Coral Gables and Hearn. Our wall had patches of different paint colors, so it was time to give it a fresh look. Walter, who serves on our board is also getting quotes to further spruce up our entrances with plants, new rock and reviewing how to better maintain some of the washes that run through our community.
