VOL 37 No. 4 How do you volunteer your time? I volunteer my time by helping teachers at my old elementary school, donating my time to food banks, and doing school cleanups. I am also involved in the Muscular Dystrophy Association and am currently the State Ambassador. What are you hoping to do when you are all grown up? When I grow up I hope to work in the medical field or work with animals. I also have an interest in design. What is your favorite quote? My favorite quote is "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do”.

What do you love about Mountain Sky? I love that Mountain Sky has inspiring teachers that always encourage you to do your best.

Who do you look up to? I look up to my 6th grade teacher, Mr Stevens. He made learning fun for everyone in the class by thinking outside of the box.

How have you been involved at Mountain sky? I've been involved by being the Student Council President this year (I was Student Council Secretary my 7th grade year), a member of NJHS, and I'm also in the Friends Of Rachel club. What has been your biggest challenge? I don’t think of myself having challenges any different than any other 8th grader. My parents have always taught me to work hard, live life to the fullest, and that I shouldn’t have any different expectations for myself.

Madi Takes Mountain Sky by Storm B Y P E R R Y M A S O N , P R I N C I PA L In August 2015, the beginning of her 7th grade year, it was pretty obvious, Madi was going to take Mountain Sky by storm. She joined Student Council, and by the end of the year, she had decided to run for Student Council President. She won. Granted all seventh grade students are new to Mountain Sky, but typically they come from one of four feeder schools. Madi did not come from one of those schools. In fact only two other students at Mountain Sky came from her out-of-district school. It is hard for any student to make such a change, but to go to a whole new neighborhood with 780 strangers, and become Student Council President, shows how quickly she gets to know others and embraces change. Valerie Meyer, Student Council co-sponsor, said, “Madi is an amazing go-getter. She came to Mountain Sky from an out of school district and made friends instantly. She has great ideas and the ambition and motivation to take something from its idea stage, make a plan, and have it become reality. She encourages others and is a catalyst for enthusiasm.” Each morning, as Student Council President, Madi helps with the morning announcements, she works in the office as a Student Assistant, and is an ambassador for the school. “Madi is our cute, funny, encouraging, shoe fanatic, who is responsible and playfully sarcastic to all of us here at Mountain Sky! She is a lovely addition to the climate of our office and gently requires us to have GIANT amounts of Reece’s peanut butter candy on hand. She makes the day fun and light, and we really enjoy doing life with Madi”, said Health Technician, Erica Smith. Her openness and grace are very disarming to others. She faces the same stresses of being a teen, but simply rises above them by example, making it easy for them to put their own life into perspective. The Mountain Sky Principal said, “Having a student on campus who can provide that kind of inspiration and insight to others, makes us a very lucky school community.”

1st Qtr of 2017 Shows Promise for Real Estate Market B Y K I M G E O R G E , L O N G R E A LT Y U P T O W N Experts predicted Phoenix to have one of the hottest real estate markets in the country in 2017. How has it fared so far? According to ARMLS statistics, January and February showed a huge jump in properties under contract in North Phoenix. In fact, the number of homes that have gone under contract were at levels higher than we have seen since last May. The Moon Valley and immediate surround saw 39 properties close in the last 60 days. On average, homes ended up selling at 97% of their asking price in that same area with an average of 53 days on market. Most areas of Phoenix have seen an increase in prices ranging from 1-10% when compared to first quarter of 2016. The luxury market (homes priced above $800,000) have also seen an increase in homes closed and under contract since this time last year. The market still continues to show low amounts of inventory, leaving less for buy-

ers to choose from, but maintaining a strong sellers market for homes priced under $500,000. With recent news that Maricopa County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, it’s fair to say that these trends are likely to continue. The other important factor is interest rates. So, where do we stand with that now? According to James McCutcheon with Nova Home Loans, this past week, the national average 30-year mortgage rate fell to 4.20% from 4.26%; the 15-year mortgage rate decreased to 3.41% from 3.46%; the 5/1 ARM mortgage rate was unchanged at 3.09%; and the FHA 30-year rate decreased to 3.80% from 3.85%. Jumbo 30-year rates fell from 4.48% to 4.40%. Although this is up about a half of percent from last year, this is still historically low and affordable.

TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY

LET TER FROM THE EDITOR

Open the windows and shout out……”THIS IS WHY WE LIVE IN ARIZONA”. As my family posted the snow, and more snow… I sat here in Arizona lovin life, and all the beauties we share in our great state! The flowers, mountains, birds and wildlife are surely out enjoying this precious time as well, because the ever present reminder that summer is soon on its way. I finally was able to get to one of my “new year’s resolution” of walking every morning. Why have I waited so long, the desert is simply beautiful this year. Is it really prettier, more colorful or fragrant than in year’s past? Or is it just me, stopping to smell the roses and capturing my surroundings and being just a bit more grateful? Another great benefit of the season is the opportunity to meet the newbies in your neighborhood, and yes there are many new neighbors. Look at all of those “for sale” signs up in the hood, Moon Valley continues to be one of the hottest neighborhoods in Phoenix and has many new little pocket housing projects popping up. Not to mention the value is holding its own and growing each month. Go ahead, grab a cold beer or glass of wine sit on the front porch. It’s so fun! I am now going to ask the favor: please share the all the great restaurants, and small businesses that are in our little 10-mile square with all the new homeowners. Let’s support the small and local families working hard to enhance our community by working hard in their businesses to support us. I challenge each of you to try one of our “local” little establishments, meet the owners, introduce yourselves… don’t be a stranger. Would love to be more like some of our sister hoods, and have a full grown foodie mecca right here in Moon Valley. We can do, and should, but the big picture include supporting, eat, drink and shop local. I really gotta run….. I’d much rather be outside!

DESERT SCHOOLS FEDERAL CREDIT UNION OPENS NEWEST LOCATION

Distinctive Branch Offers Unique Design, Additional Comforts Exclusive to Moon Valley Members On March 22, Arizona’s largest credit union, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, opened its 51st location in the heart of Moon Valley at 406 E. Thunderbird Road. “We are so excited about this new branch location,” said Scott Kirschman, AVP of branch operations. “Desert Schools has wanted to be a part of the Moon Valley area for a long time. We appreciate the sense of community embodied by the Moon Valley neighborhood, and we wanted to create something very special for our members at this branch.” The Moon Valley branch will incorporate unique design features unlike any other Desert Schools location, which are aimed at making members feel right at home when they enter the space. For patrons that need a recharge, the cozy atmosphere is equipped with a coffee bar complete with high top counter and bar stools, in addition to a USB charging station. Traditional offices and cubicles are a thing of the past inside this upscale space, as the use of floating glass walls creates an open feeling while offering confidentiality for private financial consultations. Adding to the unique aesthetic of the branch, the design also features large photos of landmarks and landscapes from around Moon Valley by accomplished Phoenix photographer Mike Myers. These unique pieces of art aim to celebrate the community and its unparalleled sense of spirit. Upscale fabrics and a soothing, yet rich color palette add the finishing touches to an uncommonly enjoyable banking experience. Of course, the new branch includes all of the services and technology that Desert Schools members are accustomed to. Upon entering the business, guests will have access to a private 24-hour teller machine with expanded transactional capabilities, entered only by swiping their personal debit card. The branch also includes a traditional three teller line and offers a full scope of financial services, including personal loans, mortgages and estate planning. Desert Schools will host a grand opening celebration for the community and its members on April 22. As part of festivities, Desert Schools will be presenting a $5,000 check to the Thunderbird High School baseball team, and giving away $50 Visa gift cards to attendees every hour.

Moon Valley - 2017 Street Improvements BY BRET ALDIERI, MVNA PRESIDENT Phoenix voters passed Proposition 104 in 2015 (a 0.7% sales tax for transit) which generated the Transportation 2050 Plan, a $31.5B, 35-year comprehensive investment in Phoenix transportation infrastructure. Beyond light rail expansion, extended bus service, new bike lanes and more, this initiative greatly increases annual funding for street improvements; Phoenix has nearly 5,000 miles of streets! This author is a member of the Phoenix Transportation Commission that oversees these city projects. The Commission meets the last Thursday of every month and the public is always invited to attend. Street improvements have already starting occurring in Moon Valley, with other improvements planned for this year. The first street improvement we saw is called a Residential Crack Seal, which uses modified asphalt rubber to fill in cracks on streets that are still in relatively good condition. This process was completed in March along the entire length of Moon Valley Drive. Although crack seal, in some people’s opinion, is not aesthetically pleasing, it is a necessary step that the City takes to increase the lifespan of the asphalt street and ensure a safe driving surface. The second MV street improvement is on 7th Avenue, between Coral Gables Drive and Greenway Parkway. A Polymer Modified Master-seal (PMM) Seal Coat was applied to the street and the lanes lines repainted. This Seal Coat locks in the existing asphalt, oils and aggregates in the pavement and is primarily used on local streets with reduced traffic. The last MV street improvement planned in 2017 is a Residential Overlay for Coral Gables Drive from Thunderbird Road to 7th Avenue planned for later this spring. This is one of the more expensive street maintenace options. This process starts with the milling (or removal) of the upper surface of the existing asphalt street that is cracking until the asphalt is free of defects. Then a new layer of asphalt is overlaid on top of the existing surface and the lane lines are repainted. The City is reviewing the repaving of Thunderbird Road adjacent to Moon Valley, possibly in coordination with a proposed water main installation, although

this improvement and timing has not yet been finalized (won’t be in 2017). MVNA has reached out to the City’s Streets Transportation Department to ensure proper coordination and advocate for specific street improvements. In addition, individual residents can take an active role in advocating for street improvements, like reporting potholes and installing traffic devices, such as speed humps and signs. Please feel free to visit https://www.phoenix.gov/streets for more streets information OR submit a maintenance request via Street Maintenance Dispatch Office at: 602-262-6284 or email dispatch@phoenix.gov. Thank you to MVNA board member Joshua Matthews who contributed greatly to this article. Moon Valley Magic Lies in Being a Good Parent M O O N VA L L E Y M AG I C BY D E B B I E E R B S T O E S S E R Being a good parent does not mean you believe everything your child tells you. Kids lie. As a teacher I have had many years of experience with lying kiddos. I was one myself once upon a time. My boys knew that I didn’t always believe them when they told me stories about their teachers. I always need to hear both sides. Too often parents don’t bother getting both sides. My own sister did that to me when her oldest was just 3. I was shocked. My own sister! And she didn’t even apologize for not believing me after it was clear that I was telling the truth. As incredible as it seems to those of us who are not delusional, it is a fact of life. It makes teaching even more stressful than it already is. Given how little we are paid, it’s no wonder teachers flee from this profession at such alarming rates. I love my students and build a rapport with them that usually transcends such incidences, but they still happen. My colleague was lied about, and

because the mom had an, ‘Oh my poor baby’ response, he lied more. It was both sad and scary to see. There are incidences when we have to step in and help. Since Gary and I are not usually ‘hovering parents’ it’s tough to know when that time is. We so desperately want our three sons to be independent, self-sufficient men, who can handle themselves and problem solve, but sometimes reality steps in and it’s obvious they are being taken advantage of because they are young. Being a good parent is multi-faceted. I personally believe in choosing the battle I fight for them to be one that is honest and true. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt. Believe your child only so much and then step back and away slowly. Allow their wings to spread so they can fly, and if they lied, let them crash. If they’re being taken advantage of, that’s different, but either way, there are valuable lessons

The Cost of Long-Term Care in Arizona B Y L I N D S E Y J . A R R E Y, D I R E C T O R O F M A R K E T I N G , F E L L O W S H I P S Q U A R E P H O E N I X When it comes time to help a loved one find appropriate long-term care, cost will eventually be a major factor. While costs often vary greatly, pinpointing a specific budgetary range without sacrificing quality of care can still be accomplished with some careful research, planning and financial options as well. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 70 percent of people turning 65 can expect to use some form of long-term care during their lifetime. Because there is such a wide range of long-term care services, there is also a wide range of costs. Some people may be eligible for a public program such as Medicaid to help assist with the costs associated with long-term care. However, the majority of seniors will use a number of other ways to pay for their long-term care including long-term care insurance, personal income and savings, life insurance, annuities and reverse mortgages. A Genworth 2016 Cost of Care Survey conducted by CareScout in April of 2016 broke down the median monthly costs for long-term care. In Arizona specifically, the monthly cost breakdowns are as follows: Homemaker Services -- $3,813 Home Health Aide -- $3, 998

Stay engaged in your community. Take part in a fitness program personalized just for you. Build connections with new friends and entertain life-long friends and family at Fellowship Square Phoenix. Monthly rents start at $1980.

Adult Day Health Care -- $1,812 Assisting Living Facility -- $3,500 Nursing Home Care (Semi-Private Room) -- $6,296 Nursing Home Care (Private Room) -- $7,756 It’s important to note that Medicare only covers long-term care if the individual requires skilled services or rehabilitative care, and it does not cover non-skilled assistance with Activities of Daily Living, which falls into the majority of long-term care services, per the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Federal programs, including Medicaid, the Older Americans Act and the Department of Veterans Affairs, cover long-term care services for specific populations and under specific circumstances. Approaching how to cover long-term care costs may require the assistance of some financial guidance to help the individual in need of care, as well as the family, understand the programs and options available. Seeking multiple options, and weighing pros and cons of each can help determine which route is most suitable for the individual in need.

NCL Senior Luncheon B Y E M I LY W E B E R On Sunday, March 12, 2017, National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) Moon Valley Chapter celebrated the graduating class of 2017 with its annual Senior Recognition Luncheon. This year’s event was held at the Phoenix Country Club with the theme of “Follow Your Dreams”. The event started out with an inspirational quote from President, Frankie Wheeler of “Let your dreams be bigger than your fears and your actions louder than your words.” Each girl was escorted into the room by their mother. This was followed by the senior video which contained several pictures of each participant along with their favorite song. The program featured each mom’s dream for their daughter as they go off to college. One such “dream” was from NCL, Inc. mom, Michelle Reed whose dream for her daughter, Sophie, was “to be true to yourself and your beliefs, to carry on with your head high even when it is hard to keep walking. I dream for you a life filled with love, laughter, and lululemon.” We learned a bit about each girl and their amazing accomplishments. Overall, the class of 2017 completed over 3,000 hours of community service throughout their time in NCL, Inc. They volunteered with their moms at over 20 area philanthropies. This was a great event that celebrated each girl and their special relationship with their mom.

DOG CARE IN SPRING AND SUMMER BY FROST Y KROENING At the community policing meeting March 8, a wonderful card put out by blog. furlocity.com was distributed to attendees. The topic was how to protect our furry pets from harm in Phoenix’s heat. The title was “HOT ASPHALT AWARENESS.” It said, “Press the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt for 7 seconds, to verify it will be comfortable for your dog to walk on.” And, unbelievably, when the air is 77 degrees outside, asphalt in full sun can reach 125 degrees. At 87 degrees, asphalt can reach 143 degrees. Imagine how hot asphalt becomes at 115 degrees! We haven’t tested this ourselves, but the numbers are humbling. Other information on this handout included: 1) “Dogs that are white, hairless and with light colored fur are most likely to suffer from sunburn,” and, 2) signs of heatstroke are “excessive panting, weakness, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, dark red gums, in-coordination, rapid heartbeat, and seizures.” It is recommended that owners put sunscreen on dogs where possible! Our dog has dense fur so that is not realistic. But, another recommendation is to put some sort of “clothing” on the dog. I haven’t seen sun-stopper dog coats yet, but someone could make a lucrative industry out of that idea. My husband and I solve most of these challenges by taking our dog out early in the morning and after the sun goes down and asphalt is cooler. Then our main challenge is to carry flashlights to tell drivers that we are there since there are no sidewalks in our area. Sometimes I wear a reflective vest. Sequence of Returns BY D E N N I S J. R O G E R S , C PA , C FP ® Most people pay great attention to the returns they make on their investments. How did each fund perform over the last year – 5 years – 10 years? How badly did they do in the big down markets? These are certainly important questions. However, as we approach the time we are about to use the money, like retirement, there is another very important concern – the sequence of the returns. The S&P 500 has had an average return of 9.99% annually over the past 30 years. That seems comforting if you are about to retire and plan to withdraw 6% or even 8% annually, right? You will have enough for each year and some left over to cover inflation. The problem is that you cannot predict in what sequence those returns will come. What if, in the first few years of your retirement, market performance is particularly bad and your returns are much less than 9.99% annually? Market performance will likely work out over time, but you may run out of money before it gets back. You could find yourself taking withdrawals of 13% or more from your now smaller balance. That may not be sustainable. Next month we will look at some solutions to this dilemma. BMI: Myth vs. Fact WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER For years we’ve been caught up in the allure, for better or worse, of body-mass index (BMI). What’s your BMI? Is it high, low or just right? Unfortunately, while the BMI has some benefits, it isn’t necessarily the most accurate gauge of a person’s health. Let’s learn more about body-mass index and some of the myths vs. facts surrounding it. FACT: Body-mass index measures a person’s height (square meters) in relation to their weight in kilograms. Divide your weight by your height and you’ll determine your BMI. Not hip to the metric system? Then multiply your weight by 703 and divide by your height in inches squared. Anything between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered “normal.” MYTH: If your BMI is high (25 or higher), it means you’re overweight / at risk for health issues. The inaccuracy of body-mass index stems from its very nature of generalization; after all, can billions of unique individuals really be grouped into general categories based purely on height and weight? BMI fails to adjust for factors such as body type, muscle mass, etc., that can have a profound impact on the numbers. For example, two 5 foot, 10 inch tall people who each weigh 175 pounds have a BMI of 25.1 – slightly overweight. But what if one is pure muscle and eats a clean diet, while the other is a couch potato who can’t lift a finger without getting tired? Which do you think is healthier? FACT: Body-mass index is more revealing when it comes to high and low numbers. BMI works better when it comes to people who are either markedly underweight or overweight / obese. If you’re 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weigh 230 pounds, your BMI is 37.1 – way out of the normal range. Chances are good that even when accounting for your unique body type and exercise / diet habits, you may need to shed some pounds or risk health consequences down the line. MYTH: Whether you’re a woman or a man, the BMI can tell you a lot about your health. This is one of the biggest misconceptions. Unless you’re using one of the latest BMI scales, which accounts (or tries to) for gender (as well as age in some cases), you’re not getting enough useful information from your BMI score. Age and gender are both important variables to consider, since women naturally tend to retain more body fat than men, as do older vs. younger people. Rather than rely on BMI as a true measure of your health, a better indicator may be waist circumference (WC). Increasing research suggests waist circumference is a stronger predictor of intra-abdominal (visceral) fat than BMI. This is an important distinction because visceral fat, situated between the abdominal organs, can impact body function to a greater extent than subcutaneous fat, which is situated just under the skin. To learn more about waist circumference and how to measure it, talk to your doctor. Nicholas Warner, DC | Wellness in Motion 14001 N 7th Street, D-107, Phoenix AZ 85022

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month BY AARON VERBARG, DDS According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 49,750 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2017, with a person dying of oral cancer every hour of every day. Unfortunately, oral cancer awareness in the American people is low. Most oral cancers are found as late stage cancers, and 43% of people diagnosed will not survive longer than five years. On a positive note, when found early, oral cancers have an 80-90% survival rate. Early detection and prevention of this disease is the key to survival. ORAL CANCER ON THE RISE… In past generations, oral cancer was most likely linked to smoking, alcohol use, or a combination of the two. More recently, there has been a rise of oral cancers associated with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV16). Other factors that may increase risk of oral cancer include: poor oral hygiene, chronic rubbing from rough teeth, dentures or fillings, medications that suppress the immune system, and sun exposure to the lips. A small percentage of people get oral cancer from no known cause, which may likely be related to genetic predisposition.

finding abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. Exams can be more thorough and any suspicious areas can be further investigated. YOUR DENTIST’S REPONSIBILITY… As health care providers, we play an important role in our patient’s oral and overall health. Oral cancer screenings are a routine part of dental examinations. Using the Velscope can help detect hidden lesions before they have a chance to progress, which will improve your chances of living a healthy life. It’s one more reason to visit the dentist regularly…it may save your life!

BE AWARE OF SYMPTOMS… Dentists look for early signs of mouth cancer during regular checkup appointments, but it is important for you to recognize warning signals. Signs of mouth cancer can include loose teeth, difficulty swallowing, unexplained bleeding, change in speech, and a sore that doesn’t heal. Although most spots or sores are harmless, harmful ones often look the same. A sore tongue, a thickening or lump, a white or reddish patch on the inside of the mouth, crusts, and swelling on the gums can also be a symptom of oral cancer. When it comes to symptoms, see a dental professional if they don’t improve or disappear after two-three weeks. NEW TECHNOLOGY IN ORAL CANCER DETECTION… At our office, new technology known as the Velscope, a hand-held device, is used to give us a better view of the oral cavity and changes that can be happening. It does not diagnose cancer, but is a welcome adjunct to the oral examination and takes only two minutes. It is a fantastic non-invasive screening device that aids in

Make Family Rooms Work

Broken Limb Landscaping Service

DESIGN SOLUTIONS BY ROBERT ALAN MINOR

Any tree or any palm, trim or remove and grind stump. Also do one time yard clean ups.

Many older homes suffer from low ceilings, smaller rooms, boring architecture and too little space. Lifestyles have changed dramatically over the years making the family room/kitchen the hub of the home. We are making better use of the space we have, but how can we make the space look like more?

Locally owned landscaping company for 30+ years

Free Estimates! Give us a call at 623-486-3740 or visit the web at www.brokenlimb.net

Let’s look at some ideas to make family rooms work: Link the indoors with the outdoors. One way is to link the smaller interior space with the larger exterior space. This can be done in many ways. Sometimes it’s appropriate to enlarge windows or add French doors. Adding a water feature in your yard is also a wonderful visual effect, especially when it can be seen from your family room. It is also a great idea to hang a mirror opposite a view, the impact of the view is doubled. Consider a skylight for added natural light. Break down interior barriers. Designers are fond of tearing down the nonsupportive walls between rooms to create the sense of a larger room. Is there a non-bearing wall that separates your family room and kitchen? Consider removing this barrier and making it one large great room. Is there a hallway wall that can be removed or a doorway opening that can be made larger? Even removing a portion of a hallway wall can make a dramatic difference. Continuity of color stretches space. A continuous color on walls and floors is the most effective way to unify and simplify space. A pale color reflects light, so it makes a room seem more airy and open. When large scale furniture matches the walls or floors, it seems to disappear into the background and take less space. This is a favorite designer device for tricking the eye and creating the illusion of openness. With continuous pale, neutral color on the walls, floors and furniture, I often use a variety of textures to create interest in the room. For example, the walls could be softly upholstered or painted with a smooth finish; the floors may be tile, stone or wood; and I may use textured or nubby fabric for upholstery. In a scheme like this, contrast in color comes with accessories. This contrast can set off important accessories, or even enhance those that aren’t exceptional. An added advantage of this scheme is that you can change the entire mood of the room simply by changing the accessories. There is flexibility in simplicity! Furniture that is low, simple, and minimal. The less confusion that meets the eye, the more open and unconfining the room. Low furniture makes the ceiling seem higher. The less furniture there is, the more space there is. Multifunctional furniture such as storage ottomans, tables with storage, and bookcases concealed or built into sofas are all answers to beautifying and simplifying small spaces. Consider using glass top metal or wood tables. Verticals make the ceiling seem higher. Tall trees & bookcases, floor-to-ceiling window coverings – all these vertical lines draw the eye up and down. Suddenly the ceiling seems taller. Diagonals make the room seem larger. A diagonal line is the longest line you can draw through a rectangular or square space. A diagonal line also has energy, making walls appear farther away. It breaks up the boxiness of the square shaped room. Try floating furniture arrangements! Look at built-in storage options. If you need storage space, you might build storage closets along one wall. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases with flip-down surfaces can create tabletops for desk, bar, work or hobby areas. Allover lighting can make a room seem larger. LED ceiling recessed cans that wash the walls with light are a great solution for small spaces. Floor uplights positioned behind plants also give an illusion of depth and drama. Remember to install dimmers. This is especially important for ceiling lighting so you can change the mood of your room at the flick of a switch! A Fitness Approach That Really Can Help Everyone BY BARB NICHOLLS, ANY TIME FITNESS While fitness is an important part of your overall health and wellness plan, the approach you choose is certainly not one size fits all. (Despite the numerous sources that will say otherwise.) It’s important you stop believing the latest hype and find a plan that is safe, effective, and balanced for long-term results! A balanced workout plan will ensure you work all muscles in your body. And it’s important to remember the heart is one of those muscles that needs a lot of attention. Getting your heart rate up means you need to find exercises or activities that use large muscle groups. You can choose walking, jogging, biking, swimming, or any cardio machine you find in the gym. But did you know some types of strength training can tick the cardio box as well? Why not kill two birds with one stone?! How to Add Full-Body Movements The secret to doing this is incorporating full-body movements into your workouts. If you’re using adequate weight and a good range of motion, you can target multiple muscles at once, elevate your heart rate, and cut your workout time in half. Fullbody movements include exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, or squatting to a press overhead. These movements take a bit of coordination and often use your body weight or equipment like hand weights, kettlebells, and barbells. Full-body movements are the opposite of isolated movements like biceps curls or a bench press. And typically you avoid the larger machines you’ll find at a gym (e.g. the leg extension, leg press, or pecdeck). These types of machines and more isolated movements aren’t “bad.” No need to swear them off forever! But full-body movements can give you a bigger bang for your buck, moving you toward your goals faster. Not to mention, these types of exercises are typically considered “functional” movements— and functional training is the approach that rules for everyone! The Functional Approach That Rules Functional training does more than strengthen and tone your muscles. It does more than help your heart. Exercises that are considered functional also train you for life. A functional training approach looks at everyday movements and chooses exercises to strengthen you in the same way. This is a bit different than looking at a list of muscles and choosing an exercise for each one. Not only does this approach strengthen your muscles, but it teaches coordination of the muscles and

simultaneously trains the core to help you stay protected throughout these typical movement patterns. Your body has four primary movement patterns: 1. Upper Body Pushing – Your body must be able to push things away from you (horizontal pushing) and above you (vertical pushing). These two common activities require muscles of the core, shoulders, and chest to work together. Exercise examples: push-ups, check press, and overhead presses 2. Upper Body Pulling – Your body must be able to pull things toward you (horizontal pulling) and pull you up (vertical pulling). You may be thinking, well, I don’t do much of that day-to-day! You’re probably right, but because everyday life puts our arms in front of us and gravity pulls us in the same direction (e.g. sitting at a desk and typing, driving a car), we are left with excessive rounding of the shoulders and curving of the upper back. Training the body purposefully to resist and offset our typical posture is important for the health of our shoulders, upper back, and more. Exercise examples: pull-ups, pull-downs, and rowing 3. Hip Dominant Movements – Your body must bend at the waist throughout the day, but we also keep our hips in a flexed position for long periods of time each day (e.g. sitting, driving). Offsetting our shortened hip flexors and keeping the hips, lower back, and leg muscles working well together will help you stay mobile and injury-free. Exercise examples: bridges, deadlifts, and kettlebell swings 4. Knee Dominant Movements – Knee-dominant movements get you out of and into chairs, up and down the stairs, and so much more. Keeping the lower body strong and the knee joints mobile will keep you moving for years to come. Exercises examples: squats, lunges, and step-ups What Does A Functional Workout Look Like? A functional workout should include at least one exercise for each of the four movement patterns. And when possible, combine movement patterns to ensure fullbody movements are included. Then, if you have time, feel free to throw in exercises that you love, targeting your favorite muscle groups individually. But make sure you cover your bases first with the four movement patterns described above though! We’ve created a short introductory functional movement workout for you that can be done 2-3 times a week. Be sure to rest between workouts and push yourself as appropriate. If you’re just getting started with exercise or it’s been a while since you’ve squatted intentionally, you may want to ease into full-body movements. Begin with a workout designed to give you baseline strength and a bit of extra support. Then, when you’re ready, add free-weight exercises that incorporate stabilizing muscles and a bit more coordination. In no time you’ll be ready to tackle functional training workouts and find your day-to-day life getting that much easier! SCORE! Our Trainers: Lauren, Nick, Jami or Andy can get you started on a Functional Workout Today!

9 Out of 10 Suffer with Headaches BY D R . JA M E Y R E I CH OW, D.C . Research has shown that nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Headaches sufferers tend to have a widespread presentation of their symptoms: occasional, frequent, constant, daily, weekly or monthly along with dull, sharp, shooting, throbbing, sometimes causing debilitating pain and nausea. Clinical studies have shown that 95% of headaches are primary headaches. Primary headaches include tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. Primary headaches are not caused by disease but the headache themselves are the chief concern. The greatest majority of primary headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck. Today, we engage in more sedentary activities than we used to, and more hours are spent in one fixed position or posture. This can increase joint irritation and muscle tension in the neck, upper back and scalp, causing your head to ache. The many suffering from headaches deal with them in many different ways. Some push through it, others seek solace, or take over-the-counter pills or even prescriptions. However, there is a better, more effective and less invasive alternative when dealing with headaches! A report released by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that chiropractic spinal manipulations resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication. In addition to the chiropractic adjustments, headache sufferers should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily, engage in walking and low impact exercise, and if you are spending extended periods of time in one position-take breaks and stretch the neck every half hour to an hour. Also, avoiding caffeine, soda, chocolate, high salt and high protein diets can be helpful in eliminating triggers of headaches. Stop suffering! If you have any questions about headaches-contact Moon Valley Chiropractic. To Health!

New Garage Door Wins Out Over Kitchen Remodel B Y PAT T Y S C H M I D A N D S H A R O N H E L L A N D

My column last month, “What Were They Thinking?” – How to Save $100,000,” drew quite a few surprised responses. How could I tell people not to remodel their kitchens and bathrooms? After all, these are the rooms that can really show off a home, right? Yes… but! Remember, I said kitchen and bath remodels could be important to selling your home, but… they had to be done well – very well! And, too often I see remodels that are poorly executed. And it’s not my opinion that counts here – it’s the Moon Valley buyers who are looking at your for-sale home. The buyers decide with their wallets if you’ve done a decent remodel. So, I thought I’d show you what the market is telling us about remodels, straight from the Remodeling 2017 Cost vs. Value Report. This report tells us what’s happening with returns on remodeling dollars invested – at the city level – right here in Phoenix. So many of the reports share national data. Do we really care about vinyl siding projects in Milwaukee and basement remodels in Minneapolis? Not so much. Guess what two of the worst projects are for returns on investment? You got it - kitchen and bath! A major kitchen remodel will return sixty cents on the dollar. Spend a dollar – get sixty cents back. Bathroom remodel? The same – sixty percent! How could I recommend you invest your hardearned dollars in these remodels? I can’t. Not if you’re putting your house on the market. How about a backyard patio remodel? Who doesn’t enjoy being outdoors on a beautiful Moon Valley evening? For every dollar you spend on this project you can

expect to lose forty-five cents. That’s only a fifty-five percent return – less than the kitchen and bath remodels. Where in your home should you invest your money before you list your residence for sale? The “Remodeling 2017 Cost vs. Value Report” tells us the money is in the infrastructure. Windows will bring you a seventy percent return, a new roof – seventy-four percent. But wait – that’s not a dollar for a dollar return you might say. No, it’s not – but the Moon Valley buyer doesn’t want to put in an offer on a home with a leaky roof – even, or especially, if it’s leaking on a newly remodeled kitchen. You can increase your return to the eighty-plus percent range for doors - a front door gets you eighty-one percent of your money back, a garage door – eighty-four percent. But the real money is in the attic! The attic? You won’t see many HGTV design shows on this remodel, but this is where the money is… Attic insulation. Yes, attic insulation. You can expect up to 179% return on your investment by insulating your attic. I know, it’s not trendy and it’s not as sexy as new granite kitchen counters – but, you do want to sell your home – don’t you? So, when you’re thinking about selling your home, reach out to a REALTOR™ early in the process so we can utilize our decades of experience and professional training to help you make the most cost-effective decisions possible.

Students in STEAM BY ARIANNA WILLIAMS, GENTECH SUPPORT

What is STEAM All About?

Summer

Tech Camps

Heard any TV news anchors or teachers talking about STEM and STEAM lately? It’s a hot topic in education. Simply put, it’s education that applies to: Science, Technology, Engineering, (Arts) and Math concepts to everyday learning. And it’s gained tremendous global recognition in recent years. In the technologically advanced world we live, the economy is rapidly producing more and more jobs in STEAM fields. So quickly, in fact, that employers are having trouble filling demand for employees with needed technology skills. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEAM occupations are growing at 17%, compared to the 9.8% found in other occupations. Educators across the country are scrambling to create the workers of the future. However, the purpose of STEAM education goes far beyond simply filling this skill gap. Educators are developing the thinkers of tomorrow.

These kids will become the problem solvers, the employers, and eventually the educators. STEAM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and inspires the next generation of innovators. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEAM fields. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math, science and critical thinking skills. Our Moon Valley community supports and fosters these ideologies. Washington Elementary schools, Mountain Sky Middle School, Thunderbird High and Paradise Valley School District offer exceptional STEAM-based curriculums introducing robotics, 3D printing, coding and computational troubleshooting in solving real-world problems starting at the elementary level. Our community is ahead of the curve! Bagby's the Barber for a Shave and a Haircut and More BY SUSAN MERCER HINRICHS, REPORTER

Longtime Shop Hosts Generations with Camaraderie He cut Moon Valley golf magnate Carsten Solheim’s hair. Former Phoenix Mayor Paul Johnson and his sons have had their locks sheared and shaped at his shop, too. And when he plied his trade in spaces within the downtown Phoenix Luhr’s Building, clients regularly included judges, lawyers and bail bondsmen. Meet Tim Babgy, known as Bagby the Barber and whose business bears his eponymous moniker. He’s deftly wielded scissors, electric or straightedge razors and slapped blades against sharpening straps for more than 50 years in his own store and in rented spaces within the city. Families across generations still visit his shop, 709 W. Hatcher Rd., in Sunnyslope. They’ll also bring their friends in to relish some relaxing time that leaves them looking nicely spiffed up, too. And it’s likely because of this fact that, in addition to receiving a darn good haircut, patrons continue to come in for a chat, catching up on the latest goingson in everyone’s lives and spend some quality time in a building that houses lots of history within its walls. That camaraderie is imbued in the shop is readily evident. You walk in welcomed by a jovial group of Bagby’s longtime barbering friends Rich Cancelosi and Daniel Stramaglia -- each with more than four decades of barbering -- who’ve partnered with the now mostly retired Bagby to continue the tradition of tonsorial excellence. Together, the men bring to the patrons in their chairs more than a century of experience. “I’ve got the best two employees a fellow could ask for,” Bagby says. “I’ll tell you about it, they work hard; they’re nice to the customers. And if you ask me what keeps a business going, this is it.” Cancelosi adds, “You learn a lot about people, their problems, their goodness, what they do; and that’s what’s it all about people.”

Stramaglia comes from a long line of barbers and beauticians, so he says his choice of a career came naturally. And along with all the interesting people he’s encountered, a particular scenario remains vivid. “In Chicago, in the movie ‘The Untouchables,’ the shop I worked at, my boss (Kirk Merchant) used to shave (actor) Robert DeNiro.,” Stramaglia says. “In the opening scene, (DeNiro’s) playing Al Capone and he’s getting a shave, manicure and shoe shine and they used our manicurist and our shoe-shine guy in the movie; and my boss trained the actor” who played the role of the barber shaving DeNiro. Along with the shared camaraderie, when “. . . the people come in here and they look around,” Babgy says. Those barber chairs in Bagby’s shop are gorgeous, vintage items, still swiveling and beautiful to look at with their plumed-up seating and woven-metal foot rests. A couple of them date from the 1920s, a third goes back a mere 50 or so years. Shelving is adorned with all varieties of barber mugs; some long-bristle shaving brushes stand atop the barbering counters -- all exquisite to look at, but bristles unable to be used anymore for mandated health concerns. A functioning barber pole still is able to beam from one of the shop’s interior corners, rotating its business message. And an antique “Barber Shop” sign is prominently positioned one a wall. While bearing patriotic colors, it indicates the work barbers formerly performed before the practice became illegal: blood-letting and minor surgeries. The red stands for new, or oxygenated, blood; the white for bandages; and the blue indicates old, or carbondioxide-filled, blood. Also mounted on shop walls are several fine works Bagby’s late mother, Kathleen Bagby, painted; antique license plates from around the nation, from Canada and one from The Bahamas. Looking closer, you can see a special honorary plaque from the St. Vincent de Paul Society, commending Bagby for his and his colleagues voluntary efforts cutting homeless peoples’ hair for more than 20 years. the people who make the business, the barbering trio agree. “I love people,” Babgy says. “I love to be around people.” All the men’s positive earlier years’ influences with barbering and hair styling led them into the trade, but in different parts of the nation. Bagby, originally hailed from Indiana; Cancelosi from New Jersey and Stramaglia from Illinois. After relocating to the Valley of the Sun at different times in their lives, the latter two introduced themselves to Bagby, who added them to his team. The result remains fortuitous for all, thriving to this day. One young neighborhood resident, Matthew Freestone, drops into the barber shop about once monthly. “They’re very personable with this,” Freestone says. “They take their time and you don’t have to complain about it, (but) there’s nothing to complain about; it’s perfect every time. They do a good job.” Such a good job, in fact, Freestone introduced his younger friend, Greeley, Colo., resident Joe Johnson, to Bagby, Cancelosi and Stramaglia. Johnson’s no relation to the former Phoenix mayor but he’s establishing his own Johnson-family legacy of patronizing Bagby the Barber. “They do really good haircuts,” Joe says. Along with barbering, Bagby’s also adds some extra feathers in his cap. The former track-and field star remains an avid hiker; he served in the Marines during the Vietnam era; served a two-year term as mayor of Clarkdale, Ariz., and also worked for the Babbitt brothers organization, running a grocery store of theirs at the Grand Canyon. He and his wife of 40 years, Nancy, current Cottonwood residents, have four children, one of whom, Christopher, has a hand in the business. “It’s been fun; it’s been a good life,” Bagby the Barber says. “People have always treated me very well in the shop.” “It’s all about the people; it’s fun to be around people.” **“Cutting hair has been veru, very good to me and my family,” Bagby says. Daniel: his dad & mom both hairdressers. Dad opened salon in Chicago. “A lot of relatives were hairdressers. He & his sister went to barber school together.

The Best Rate in a Rising Market THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON In the April, 2017 edition of Money magazine Beth Braverman wrote an article entitled “Pull Down the Best Rate.’ The subtitle said; “Mortgage interest is on the rise but homebuyers can still land a good deal.” Braverman points out that although the availability of mortgage credit is beginning to ease, after years of tight credit as a result of the mortgage crisis, the cost of buying a home is going up. Both rising interest rates and home prices have made it harder now to buy a home than at any time since 2010. Here is her advice: • Lock in low rates • Apply online - and in person • Think beyond 30-year fixed • Know how low you can go She says it might be advantageous to lock in a rate for 60 days instead of the traditional 30 days. She points out that if rates escalate even ¼ of a point in that period, the savings will more than pay for the extra premium, that you pay for a 60-day lock, within one year. My thoughts are this – there is definitely an extra cost to lock for 60 days and it should not take your lender 60 days to close the loan. (our average is 28 days) Applying online is the wave of the future, but there is a real bonus in dealing with the same person throughout the entire transaction. Having instant access to the same trained and licensed loan officer is very comforting. The big online lenders have massive call centers and you never seem to talk to the same person twice. This may be why you need a 60-day lock. The 30-year fixed rate loan is the staple of the industry, but as Braverman indicates, depending on your circumstances, it may not be the best choice. I wrote an article in February about this very thing. Quoting myself, I said “many of us either move or refinance every 5 to 7 years. If this is your situation, you don’t need the security of a 30-year fixed mortgage, and the extra cost that is associated with it.” 15-year fixed and ARMs are other viable options, depending on your situation. There are a variety of mortgages available, some with down payments as low as 3%, and some that will accept FICO scores as low as 580. It is best to get with a trusted loan officer and explore your options. It doesn’t cost anything to talk. - Gerry Johnson -

WHAT EXACTLY IS A CAVITY?

B Y N E E T U G U P T A , D . D . S . , F. A . G . D .

Is it that time of the year when your child is due for their 6 Month dental checkup? Are you like many parents out there, who sit patiently in the waiting room crossing your fingers that your child does not end up with cavities. Have you ever really wondered “what exactly is a cavity”, “how do cavities actually form” or “why is it so important to get cavities treated in your child’s mouth???? Well, wonder no more. A cavity, tooth decay or dental caries is the destruction of your outer tooth enamel and underlying surfaces by acids produced by specific types of bacteria. Our mouths are full of different types of bacteria that live on our teeth, gums and tongue. Some bacteria are helpful but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. Throughout the day, a tug of war takes place inside our mouths. On one team are dental plaque (a sticky, colorless film of bacteria) plus foods and drinks that contain sugar or starch (such as milk, bread, cookies, candy, soda, juice etc.). Whenever we eat or drink something that contains sugar or starch, the bacteria uses them to produce acids. These acids begin to eat away at the tooth’s hard, outer enamel surface. On the other team, are the minerals in our saliva (such as calcium and phosphate) plus fluoride from toothpaste, water, and other sources. This team helps enamel repair itself by replacing minerals lost during an “acid attack.” Our teeth go through this natural process of losing minerals and regaining minerals all day long.W hen a tooth is exposed to acid frequently, the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. A white spot may appear where minerals have been lost. This is a sign of early decay. Tooth decay can be stopped or reversed at this point! But if the tooth decay process continues, more minerals are lost. Over time, the enamel is weakened and destroyed, forming a cavity. What happens if that cavity is left untreated? Unless arrested in its early stages, when they are often not painful they can destroy a good part of the tooth, making it hard to be restored with a conventional filling. If a lot of the tooth structure is lost, only a dental crown can fix it. If the decay reaches the inner pulp chamber, where the nerve and blood vessels are located, then the nerve becomes irritated and infected. This can eventually lead to an abscess, which can be very painful and lead to tooth loss. The premature loss of a baby tooth could affect the space for the incoming permanent tooth or even cause infection in the permanent tooth and make it very difficult to eat. Untreated dental decay can compromise a child’s ability to smile, eat well, sleep well, and function well at home and at school and can affect the child’s self-esteem and social development. According to the American Dental Association “Tooth decay is the number one

26

chronic health problem of children”. For children’s oral health, treatment is good, prevention is better and early prevention is best! Those 6 month checkups and daily brushing and flossing are crucial for the early prevention of cavities.

Double Treat B L O C K W AT C H E R B Y B L A N C H E L U K E S Wow what a neat opportunity for those of us who went to the every second Wednesday City wide Block Watch meeting on March 8, 2017 As you may know you are invited to attend our small Moon Valley Meeting at this event as well as gain incredible information from the featured speakers.. This month Officer Tim Mitten did a presentation and discussion on Shooters called “Run Hide Fight” Great food for thought. Hopefully none of us will ever encounter the experience, however, the Denver Theater, Columbine School, and the Wal-Mart stories just to name a few neither did those folks expect such terror. Assessing escape routes for any place we go is not a bad idea. Do I run or do I hide? Calling 911 and leaving the phone on so the operator hears what is going on, is another great idea. When hiding turning off the sounds on the phone, gosh, I would never have thought of that! Just thinking through one’s options and the possible ramifications is a split second opportunity. Again hopefully one will never have to use this info however, this was so helpful in just the exercise. I would imagine if you have a group he may even do it again, definitely worth the effort, and he covered so much more On the next morning the three Phoenix precincts had their Coffee with a Cop at the Sheridan Crescent Hotel . Most of Moon Valley is in the Black Mt Precinct but many of the CAO (Community Action Officers) that served us through the years, have been transferred to either Desert Horizon or Cactus Park Precincts. . It was kind of old home week seeing so many of our past CAO ‘s there. Hearing the new Phoenix Police Chief Williams speak was a real treat. Please take advantage of these very informative meetings. Your Moon Valley neighbors are there, join us on Wednesday April 12th at 6:30pm at the Deer Valley Community Center. 2001 W Wahalla Ln, Phoenix AZ 85027 Hope to see you there Blanche contact me at moonvalleybw@cox.net

Adaptogens - Mother Nature's Stressbusters B Y O L I V I A W I N G E R T, C O - O W N E R S O U V I A T E ATM Life is so much more fast-paced with technology demanding us to be “on” all the time. Everybody has a busy schedule, we are bombarded with information all day long via various sources and are pushing ourselves constantly beyond mental and emotional limits. The result is often chronic fatigue, exhaustion, digestive problems, salt and sugar cravings, headaches, frequent colds and even depression. Stress is the root for many chronic illnesses like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. For the 25th consecutive year, April 2012 has been designated StressAwareness Month. Sponsored by the Health Resource Network (HRN), Health care professionals and health promotion experts across country join forces to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. While our bodies strive to adapt to the demands in our live and keep us balanced and healthy, it is the consistent exposure to stressors that eventually leads to physical symptoms. Mother Nature has the perfect antidote for us that equally effective and safe when it comes to combating stress. This category of herbs is called adaptogens. Just like the name says, Adaptogens help the human body adapt to stress: • They support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance • They increase the body’s resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors • They promote normal physiologic function. • They can provide a defense response to acute or chronic stress and are unique from other substances in their ability to restore the balance of endocrine hormones and in positively affecting the immune system. Adaptogenic herbs have been used for thousands of years in ancient India and China. In the past, they have been called rejuvenating herbs, qi tonics, rasayanas or restoratives. Modern research has substantiated what the ancients knew, that many of these herbs are important medicines that can be used for the prevention and treatment of a variety of common ailments. ASTRAGALUS is native to China and it s Chinese name means “yellow leader” because the root is yellow and the herb is considered the “leader” among tonic herbs. Astragalus strengthens the lungs and enhances the immune system function. Research has shown that it helps prevent immunosuppressant caused by chemotherapy and has anti-tumor inhibiting activity. More recently, Astragalus has been used to improve cardiac blood flow and to prevent kidney and liver damage.

#WESDFamily BY D R . PAU L S TA N T O N , S U P E R I N T E N D E N T, W E S D Hello! I’m Dr. Paul Stanton, the proud Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. Each month, we honor our staff during our Employee of the Month breakfast. At these celebrations, I ask a question to find out what the WESD does well. Consistently, the response is something like: “A sense of family;” “A supportive environment;” “People listen to each other;” and “We attend to each child’s needs.” These phrases may seem like intangibles, but in fact, these notions are clearly evident on all 32 campuses. When we share stories about our #WESDFamily, it’s not just an idea, it’s reality. For example, last month was National Social Work Month. We in the WESD are fortunate to have a social worker and/or community liaison on nearly every campus. The reason for these important functions in the district is that WESD focuses on the whole child: academic, social/emotional, and parent engagement. Many of our students have experienced some type of trauma in their lives. Thanks to the support and contributions of our school social workers, students and, on occasion, staff members - receive the resources and additional support they need to help them through tough times and on the road to success in class or at work. Another example of support that is unique to the WESD is our teacher induction program known as BEGIN. Now in its 30th year, our award-winning teacher/ mentor program focuses on the successful assimilation of a new teacher into the culture of teaching. National data indicates that many new teachers quit after their first five years in the classroom. This three-year program not only provides new teachers with best practices and management strategies for use in the classroom, but a mentor for the support and encouragement that many new teachers need to continue successfully in the profession. This genuine care and concern for teacher success in the classroom helps many educators flourish and in many cases, these teachers later become mentors to the next generation of new teachers. This feeling of family can also be felt in the many ways our employees give back to the communities they work in. Last fall, employees contributed more than

$46,000 to our annual United Way campaign, making the WESD the top school District contributor in central and west Phoenix. This money goes directly to the health and human service agencies in Maricopa County that support our families and neighbors. Additionally, we recently completed our annual food drive benefiting St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. Together, students and staff contributed more than 122,000 pounds of food. Not only that, but WESD staff members worked side-by-side with our partners to box food boxes for 30,000 families at St. Mary’s, supporting our families and neighbors. The WESD drive is the second largest drive at St. Mary’s behind the postal carriers’ drive. The #WESDFamily is caring, supportive, compassionate and focused on student success. You can read about the wonderful things our team is doing each and every day on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by following us at wesdschools. We have so much to be proud of in the WESD. Thank you, again. We know that you have choices regarding your child or grandchild’s education. Thank you for choosing the WESD family.

HELP! TOO SLOW!

BY LEON, TRY ME BIC YCLE Long ago we would overhaul and tune up our bicycles more often. The hubs, cranks, and forks would be disassembled, cleaned, and checked for wear. Then they would be reassembled with new parts where necessary, new grease, and adjusted to “new” like condition. Now bicycles are made better and lighter to ride more smoothly and faster. Bearings are lots smoother and the grease lasts longer before breaking down as it is sealed “in” and the dirt is sealed “out”. So “Yes” bicycles can go longer times between overhauls and tune ups. But that doesn’t mean bicycles can be ridden until they don’t!!! Squeaking, wobbling, and clunking are signs that it may be time for adjustments, and even for an overhaul and tune up. Get your bicycle checked out for that smoother and faster ride!!!

Hubbard Family Swim School in Phoenix Featured in Upcoming TV Documentary Airing in China

‘Babies in Waterland’ Will Showcase Hubbard’s WorldRenowned Aquatic Teaching Methods For nearly 20 years now since 1998 - thousands of babies, toddlers, and children from all over the Valley have learned how to swim and developed a love for the water as a result of taking lessons at the Hubbard Family Swim Schools. Under the helm of co-owners, Bob and Kathy Hubbard, their Arizona swim schools have developed a world-class reputation and the couple has become leaders and expert speakers in the field of infant and children’s swim lessons. Their three Arizona schools - in Phoenix, Peoria, and Mesa - offer swim lessons to infants and children, 8 weeks up to age 12. Recently in February, a TV film crew from China visited their Phoenix location to do some filming and interviewing for an upcoming documentary that will air this year on China Central Television (CCTV). The working title right now for the documentary is, “Babies in Waterland.” “We were honored that the documentary team from CCTV chose to visit our swim school,” says Bob Hubbard. “We originally met the film crew in Cambridge, England back in September, 2016, when Kathy and I were there to present a talk on the importance of introducing children to the water at a young age…They told us they had a great interest in the role water plays in the emotional, cognitive, and physical development of children and they wanted to come to Phoenix and see what our teaching methods were all about.” During their time in Phoenix, the Chinese film crew visited the home of the Young family, who has four children under the age of 7. They filmed all four children taking their swim lessons and according to Bob, “Their favorite subject quickly became daughter Nora, who at 3 years old is quite a little fish.” The film crew also got terrific footage of Hubbard’s swim instructors teaching children with special needs. “We have several children enrolled in our schools who are dealing with special challenges ranging from blindness to spina bifida to Down

syndrome,” explains Bob. “The film crew told us that they had a particular interest in seeing how these children excelled in an aquatic environment and the role the water plays in increasing their physical strength and flexibility.“ According to Yiping Sun, the official translator for the group, “We met Bob and Kathy at a conference in Cambridge and were impressed by their presentation, in which they talked about their family business in the U.S. and their dedication to teaching special children. Their stories were inspiring and touching, making us curious about who they are. So we interviewed them and soon realized that they are really the leading figures in the baby swimming industry. Bob was the former president of the United States Specialty Sports Association and both Bob and Kathy teach around the world…In the film we want to show people some inspiring stories about swimming, about water. And in Hubbard Family Swim School there are miracles - children who couldn’t walk start to walk, children who may be anxious and uneasy find their comfort and trust here. We can see that the Hubbard family is not just running a business. They are taking their social responsibilities through their work. What Hubbard family is doing is honorable and should be known by more people. More people should benefit from swimming.” For more information about Hubbard Family Swim Schools, visit www.hubbardswim.com

AHS Adoption Spotlight - Meet Groot Groot was formally down on his luck and was found by animal rescuers as an injured and malnourished stray. But things started looking up for the Boxer when he arrived at the Arizona Humane Society. Now at a healthy 56-pounds, Groot has his “groove” back and boasts an athletic, burly and chiseled frame and fun-loving personality. Although he was diagnosed with Valley Fever and will need ongoing medication, Groot lives a normal life and remains upbeat, enjoying daily walks, car rides to dog parks, romping through the yard and playing with other friendly canines. His big brown eyes and expressive wrinkled brow work in his favor, especially when he’s begging for treats. The young 5-year-old is housetrained, well-mannered and greets everyone he meets with a nubby tail wag and sloppy kisses. After an action packed day, Groot is content to sprawl out on a dog bed and chew a bone, or, if invited, he will lug himself onto the couch and curl up beside you while you watch your favorite TV program. To meet Groot, call 602.997.7585 extension 2156 and ask for animal ID number A537879. His adoption fee has been waived in exchange for a home that will provide Groot with the medical care that he needs. If Groot has already found a home by the time you call the shelter, visit www.azhumane.org and consider adopting one of the many other homeless pets.

Forgetters SEN I O R M O M EN T S BY DAN SE AG R EN

Another word not recognized by my computer brain, And may be non existent, really. However, most of you readers probably know what it means. We’ll explore it together. First, it is something to cherish. There are things we want to forget but find it difficult. Then there are things we forget that we want to remember. And then there seem to be memories hidden for a long time that emerge from their nap. At best, memory is a wonderful invention but so is the ability to forget so perhaps we ought to give our forgetters a little bit more credit. Next, memory is a complicated part of our anatomy. I, not an expert on memory, must reflect on what others say. Wikipedia puts it like this: Memory is the faculty of the mind by which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968). Memory is vital to experience. Without memory, we are not us. If we could not remember past events, we could not learn or develop language, relationships, nor personal identity (Eysenck, 2012). There is short-term and long term-memory, explicit and implicit functions and imperfections thanks in part to the brain. And there are synonyms like retention and cognitive psychology. Memory shows up in albums, films, literature, technology, television and technology. For instance: Phase-change memory (PCM) was set to store 3 bits of data per cell for the first time. Now PCM – which is dramatically faster than flash memory and vastly more cost-effective. Memory in technology is a universal memory used in smartphones and notebooks currently by a combination of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and flash memory. See what I mean? And it is changing, improving and becoming even more bewildering to many of us. Then there is blank memory, unused memory, misused memory and don’t forget forgetters. Or songs: My world is like a river, it’s dark as it is deep \ Night after night the past slips in and gathers all my sleep \ My days are just an endless stream of emptiness to me \ Filled only by the fleeting moments of her memory Andy Williams Sweet Memories Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few September, November \ And these few precious days I’ll spend with you These precious days I’ll spend with you. Frank Sinatra September Days Ah, yes.Memory banks and forgetter machinery don’t always get along, do they?
