A Festive Season Awaits in Moon Valley! DREW HUTCHINSON, PRESIDENT, MOON VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION As the temperature begins to cool down, the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association (MVNA) is buzzing with excitement and preparation for a series of engaging community events slated for the coming weeks. Kicking off November, residents are eagerly anticipating the annual neighborhood garage sale, scheduled for the first weekend of the month (4th & 5th). This beloved tradition not only offers a fantastic opportunity for a seasonal declutter but also serves as a communal space for neighbors to reconnect and share stories. Treasures await to be discovered, and bargains are to be had, all within the warm embrace of our community. Hot on the heels of this communal garage sale, the MVNA will host its monthly meeting on November 9th. All residents are warmly invited to attend, share their thoughts, and contribute to the betterment of our community. Details on the time and venue will be updated on our official website, www.moonvalley.org, so please keep an eye out for the latest information. As we delve into the holiday season, the MVNA encourages all residents to timely settle their membership dues and sign up for the illustrious 12 Homes of Christmas Awards. Last year, Moon Valley was transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland, with holiday lights and decorations that set a new standard for festive cheer. With the judging extended from December 1st to 10th, this year promises to be even more spectacular. In keeping with the spirit of giving and community, the MVNA is proud to continue the "Food for Lights" drive throughout the month of December.
Donation boxes will be conveniently located at all the award winning Christmas light awards. Last year, our generous community set a record in food donations, and we are eager to exceed that number this year, ensuring that the spirit of
giving and compassion extends beyond our neighborhood. As the current president of the MVNA and a resident of Moon Valley, I am continually inspired by the sense of community and shared purpose that binds us all. Let us come together to celebrate the season, uplift each other, and create lasting memories. Here’s to a festive season filled with joy, community, and the magical spirit of Moon Valley!

TRAPPED IN MOON VALLEY
LET TER FROM THE EDITOR
Sometimes you just must seize the moment and go for it! This summer my husband received a butt dial from an old friend, when he returned the call, he had an invitation to head to Sturgis and partake in all the festivities. First off you must know we do not nor never had motorcycles; we have 4 wheel off road vehicles but never leather chaps and the 2 wheels. It was a “guy” trip, and he needed to get on the road in 2 days. I started helping him plan his getaway and found us in a bit of a jam with no hotels available, and really no space to park our big RV, so we searched for alternatives and finally decided on an old 1972 Nomad (that is another story for another day!) Off he went, with very limited details, but a promise of a place to park this little gem, an extension cord to plug into someone’s home in Sturgis (whom he had never met!), 2 days on the road and he arrived in South Dakota, Sturgis the world’s larger motorcycle party in the world. Every day he would call, and send me photos of what he was doing, seeing, and experiencing, but more so about his new friend “Almost Willie.” I could not pass this opportunity up; I jumped on Allegiant the first flight I could. Mount Rushmore was on my bucket list and the first thing Ed took me to when I arrived. Loved it!! Then we headed to Almost Willie’s and Carol’s house where he had parked our little Nomad trailer. Almost Willie is an Icon in Sturgis, and Ed became his bodyguard for the week as we strolled the streets. Walking behind Willie was so fun, watching the faces and whispers - “is that really Willie Nelson?”; “there goes Willie”; “Willie can we get a photo?” A trip to Sturgis without Willie would never have been as much fun! We have found a forever friend, and he is coming to Phoenix. Willie not only looks like Willie but has a heartwarming story and sings like Willie Nelson. Willie will be helping us raise money for the Fraternal Order of Eagles charities for a fun filled night of food, raffles, and concert on December 8th, 2023, at 2957 633 W. Hatcher Road, Phoenix AZ 85021, $25.00 per person. Call 602-319-5424 for tickets, stop in at Bobby D’s or the Fraternal Order of Eagles for tickets.

Avoiding the Myths and Mistakes in Estate Planning BY LIBBY BANK S, PLLC, THE L AW OFFICE OF LIBBY BANK S There is lots of confusion about estate planning, what wills and trusts do, and what the law provides. Let’s bust a few of those persistent myths, and talk about the mistakes we need to avoid when doing an estate plan. Myth 1: My Will transfers my property to my heirs at death. Wrong! Your Will is a document that tells the Court who to appoint as your executor and to direct the executor where and how to distribute your assets. A Will alone won’t deed your house to your children or cause your bank to give the funds in your bank account to your heirs. Instead, before your executor can even touch these assets, they are forced to file paperwork with the Court to start the probate. Then they must file reports with the Court as they take care of your estate. This probate proceeding is expensive and time consuming – and it means that your Will and anything else filed is now available for the public to see. Myth 2: Estate Planning is not necessary unless I am old or rich: What we mean when we say “estate planning” is planning for your assets - whether you have a lot or a little. Even your 18-year-old has an estate – a bank account, the paycheck their employer owes, their laptop, car, and other personal property. Your “estate” is simply what you own. If you don’t prepare any plan, the State of Arizona has dictated what happens. It will likely also require probate, and it may not result in who you want being in charge, and it may not dispose of your assets the way you would like. The truth is, if you have assets, you should have a written estate plan. It may not be as elaborate as Bill Gates’ plan or be used as soon as your 90-yearold grandfather’s plan, but it is still important to have a plan you put together. Myth 3: A revocable living trust is too complicated for my simple estate: The revocable living trust simplifies things. It’s easy for you to use, and for someone else to assist you if you need help managing your finances during your life. During your life, you own your property in the trust, and have complete control over your assets, just as you did before. But if you become disabled or incapacitated, your designated successor trustee can step in to manage your financial affairs. On your death, the successor trustee distributes your property without any court involvement, and distributes it the way you have directed in your trust. The revocable living trust is an easy way to provide for the future while maintaining control over your assets. Now for the biggest mistakes I see: Mistake 1: Putting assets in joint tenancy with an adult child: This is a bad idea! First, you may lose control of your assets because you now have a co-owner. Second, once you add your child to your bank account or the title of your real property, you expose your property to the ups and downs of your child’s financial life. Is a creditor after your child? Then his creditor may go after the bank account that has his name on it – even though it is “your” account. Third, you are costing your child money in the form of capital gains taxes. Let’s take a stock account holding $100,000. If you bought the stock years ago for $20,000 (that is called your basis), when you sell, you pay capital gains on the increase of $80,000. By putting your child on the account, they take on that same valuation – a basis of $20,000. If instead they inherit that stock account, their basis is the value at the time of death, meaning if they sell right away, they pay no capital gains. That same issue arises with real property, so think twice about adding your child to the title of your home. Let them inherit the property instead and avoid those taxes. Mistake 2: Using an Online Service or Paralegal for Your Planning: It may be tempting to try to do it yourself with an estate plan. Like the mistake of putting someone on the title to your property, there are issues and tax 6 NovembER 2023 | info@mvtattler.com
consequences that you may not know about. If you haven’t done your plan properly, you may not know it, and your family will find out after it is too late to fix the problem. Likewise, using a paralegal or other non-attorney can result in an inadequate plan, one that doesn’t take into account the many things that can affect you and your family and your assets. The non-attorney plan provider also can’t help your family when you have passed. They have no ability to help administer the plan. I’ve also found that many planners who are offering a discounted plan because they want you to invest in their annuity program won’t amend your trust when you need an update. This is often the point that a client hires me to help them out. To find out more, book a free consultation with us or check out our website. Call 602-375-6752 or go to www.libbybanks.com.

Volunteering with Growing Together: The Giving Garden BY HAILEY NELSON
The Giving Garden is the brainchild of a group of women who, in 2009, wanted to transform a vacant lot at 2nd Street and Glendale Ave into a garden. These ladies had all different talents. Their goal was to create a community garden in their neighborhood that could supply healthy food. Three years later their dream became reality, and they started the garden to nourish those in the community that typically go without. The garden was so successful, that in 2017, the garden found a new, larger home at the Living Streams Church Campus on Glendale Ave and Central Ave where they could grow. Today the garden is doing more than just providing food. It is giving back to the community. The garden is a place for children and students to come by and learn the art of gardening and the importance of nutrition and the joy of giving back. NCL has many opportunities for the moms and daughters in our organization to volunteer at different charities. This is my favorite charity I have been involved in. The Saturday I volunteered, I got my hands dirty helping weed the flower beds and trim plants. There were lots of vegetables to pick. The flower beds are sponsored by individuals and groups. The Giving Garden hopes you will be part of our community as they continue to “Grow Together”. They are always looking for volunteers. Contact them if you are interested in getting your hands dirty! Sooner is Better than Later THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON We are experiencing the highest mortgage interest rates in the last two decades according to Lawrence Yun, the chief economist for the National Association of Realtors. He is the one I am citing, but I have seen many similar comments in the last few weeks. He goes on to state that this is “widening social inequality” because only higher income families can afford to buy a home. Another by-product is that mortgage holders with lower rates are reluctant to give up their low rates and move up to a nicer home, thus the available supply of affordable homes is very low. So now we have high rates and short supply. As an aside, and not really germane to this article, according to Catherine Reagor, in the Arizona Republic on Sunday, October 15, 2023, luxury home sales were almost identical for the June, July, August period in 2023 and in 2022. That is to say, this portion of the market doesn’t seem to be affected by rates. What is one to do? Obviously, this doesn’t apply to everyone, but if it fits your situation, pay heed to this strategy. If you are looking to upgrade and you can swing it, now is the hour. Start looking right now, get prequalified if you need a mortgage. Get your current home ready for sale (but be careful, you might sell it before you are ready to move – it happened to me). Paying a rate higher that makes you uncomfortable makes more sense than waiting and purchasing a home in two years that is 25% higher than you could buy it for today. Rates will eventually come down. The Mortgage Bankers Association forecasts 6.1% by the end of 2024 and 5.5% by yearend 2025. One or two refinances and you are in a really great position. Lots of industry watchers are saying this, but Jason Kindler, president of First Coast Mortgage Funding, put it this way, when rates shift “down 2% and we start getting to 6% or in the 5s, you are going to have pandemonium.” “You’re going to see buyers bidding on houses, going over the sales price . . . “ And, don’t forget about investors; they will be back. My advice is “bite the bullet.” Forget about the new car. Forget about the exotic vacation. Buy now, refinance when it makes sense. You will be glad you did. In two years, you will have a tidy equity in your new home and easily affordable payments when you refinance. RESIDENTIAL AND REVERSE MORTGAGES

As December arrives, Jewish communities worldwide prepare with anticipation for the age-old holiday of Chanukah. This cherished tradition commemorates the profound miracles experienced by the Jews in Israel. Following years of oppression under Greek rule, the Maccabees, a resilient group of Jewish fighters, triumphed against immense odds, driving their oppressors from their land and rededicated their sacred Temple. Chanukah, celebrated over eight days, marks this historic victory and the miracle of the Menorah oil, which though only enough for one day, miraculously burned for eight. In 2023, a significant 2187 years post-event, the original Temple in Jerusalem no longer stands. Yet, the essence of Chanukah and its enduring message of light resonates deeply. This theme becomes particularly relevant during the winter, when nights stretch longer. It is during these very nights that the Menorah is lit, giving us a symbolic beacon of hope and resilience in the face of life’s pervasive darkness. For those preparing for Chanukah under the strains of war, as many in Israel are today, the holiday carries an intensified significance. It underscores a potent message: “Light and goodness will always prevail.” Even amid turmoil, the spirit of Chanukah kindles a collective inner strength, encouraging a focus on solidarity and faith over discord and animosity. This year, the Moon Valley community will celebrate Chanukah with an exciting Chanukah Festival in the Moon Valley Park. A grand six foot Menorah will be lit, with live music to play everyone’s favorite Canukah tunes. To learn more about the Chanukah festival, visit www.jewishmoonvalley.com/chanukah As we prepare to celebrate Chanukah, let’s remember its timeless message, that despite prevailing challenges, the human capacity for hope, perseverance, and joy remains unyielding.

BY J U LI E PEK Tattler reader Arlene told me she was considering a home improvement project and asked me what to expect. It so happens, we just lived through a bathroom remodel and I’m happy to share my first-hand experience. Be prepared for dust, noise and disruption. Construction dust gets everywhere. Store and cover as much as you can to contain the mess. We cleaned the floors after the workers left each day just to keep up and it made the final clean up more manageable. We also had a pair of flip flops handy for when we needed to walk in the construction area and removed them before going to the other parts of the house just to minimize tracking dust. Noise is unavoidable. Nail guns, drills, saws, jackhammers are loud. While wearing headphones can help dull the noise, it’s still loud. If possible, leave the house for a few hours while the noisy stuff is going on. We planned meetings and went out shopping for supplies, avoiding the bulk of it. We even spent extra time at the gym – now that’s a real benefit! Disruption is a daily thing. Get used to having workers in and out of your home and having little to no privacy. Our contractors started early each day and we got on their schedule. Each day we got closer to the end goal and that kept us sane. It is very rewarding when your project is finished. You can claim your house again and celebrate. And then 2 months later you find some dust that you missed in the most obscure place and hopefully it conjures up a smile! To air are not to air BY LEON TRY ME BIKE SHOP You need air in your bike tires .How much is the question. Written on the side wall of the tire is the most that pressure your tire is designed for .Sometimes a flashlight is needed to see it. Wider tires take less air 4 inch wide tires take 20 to 30psi. Thin racing tires 100 to 135psi your tires are somewhere in the middle of these extremes. How often do I air? I check the tires every time I ride. Tires will loss air in a week or two. Danger of to much air can make the tire come off the rim or distort the tire making a bump. To little air can cut the side of the tire or worse yet pinch the tube causing a flat. Not seen air is important to biking. Glad we aired this thought.

Feeling Frazzled? A Facial Works Wonders!
A considerable body of research supports the mental and physical health benefits of physical activity for young and old. The research base also suggests a clear connection between stress and poor health, particularly chronic stress that remains unresolved over time. Fortunately, research also points to exercise as a great way to combat stress, and children – who are under increasingly damaging levels of stress these days – are no exception. Researchers exposed children ages 10-13 to a stress-inducing scenario in a controlled experiment in which they were given inadequate time to prepare for a presentation. They repeated the experiment, but with no pressure to perform, and took saliva samples on both occasions to compare levels of cortisol – the so-called “stress hormone.” (The body produces cortisol in response to stress.) Prior to the stress test, the researchers also tracked the children’s physical activity for one week via a wearable sensor that tracked their daily movement. Children who were more physically active (more than an hour per day) had lower cortisol levels than children who were less active. Study findings were published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport. There’s no negative to consistent physical activity, and with children increasingly participating in non-active pursuits (namely playing games or using social media on their phones, tablets and/or laptops), it’s high time for a reminder of the power of physical activity to help shape physical and mental health. It’s a win-win for your children’s healthy future.

I’ve been teaching at the same school for 11 years. I went from 5th gr ELA to the gifted specialist for grades 1-6. I wanted this job because it was part time, enrichment only, and that meant no grades and therefore no conferences. Some of those parameters changed. I held steadfast to the part time aspect, but I became the math teacher of record (which means grades), for those with gifted scores high enough to justify acceleration. That first year was a huge adjustment period. Students dropped out of gifted entirely because the stretch of going from 2nd gr math to 4th gr math was too much. The teacher cried pretty much every night and weekend when she was forced to do math homework every night and weekend. ‘She’ was ‘me’ and I was miserable. I hadn’t taught math in 27 years and due to the trauma I suffered as a child (in the name of math), I was ill equipped to teach a subject with new strategies I’d never learned myself. It was a terrible time. I hated my job, but what saved me was the part I’d gone in for in the first place…the enrichment, (the NO grades part), and it was glorious! There is no curriculum for ‘enrichment’ so I can do whatever I want and indeed, had BEEN doing on the sly all those years before. As a regular classroom teacher of any particular subject area, we are bound by the ‘standards’…as if they really teach all that kids need to know. . .*eyeroll. Many times as the 5th grade ELA teacher I was reprimanded for teaching something that wasn’t a standard. For example, my students didn’t know how to use a dictionary, so I taught them, but it wasn’t a standard. Proper printed letter formation leads to an easier time of learning cursive, but that wasn’t a 5th gr standard either. They didn’t know how to type because my district doesn’t teach it and I tried to. I’ve lost count on how many valuable things I got dissed for teaching because it wasn’t a standard. My first year back in the classroom, 11 years ago, I got low marks on my eval. by a young woman. She said in her comments that I’d wasted time reading a novel to my students during the last 10 minutes of our 90 min reading block. I was livid! After the scores from state testing came out that year and I had the highest in the school, I messaged her privately on FB (we were obviously not friends) and said, “I was right and you were wrong. Reading to children isn’t a waste of time, by evidence of my highest ELA scores in the school.” She never responded, but she did leave education and became a yoga instructor. So many times and in so many ways teachers are disrespected and questioned. It’s a hard enough job with our own admin critiquing every move, but the public scrutiny can make it worse. Luckily I’ve come to the age of not caring as much because I know the difference I make and enriching is key. I’m grateful for what I do. It’s taken me a long time to get here. I started teaching when I was barely 25. Now here I am 39 years later and I can say with confidence, “I do indeed know what the heck I’m doing…trust me.” I have raised 3 incredible men, teaching them to read before they ever started kindergarten, making sure they could tie their OWN shoelaces by age 4 and keeping them knowledgeable about all standards of decorum. It is difficult to have every move we make be judged. If that is you too, stop and breathe. Reassess what it is you’re doing and why you’re doing it. Breathe again and get out of your own head. Chances are you’re doing just fine. My friend, Kristen Hustead, wellbalancedfarm.com , has helped me with that more than any other human on the planet. So I’m grateful to be here doing the thing that brings me joy. I continue on with my chin up, chest out and shoulders back. I have to admit I’ve been told this makes me look intimidating, but it also makes me look taller. I’ve been shrinking as all old ladies do! Call us: 602.765.0902

Please send one more proof, thanks
ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
BY J ENA R I TCH IE, M O O N VALLE Y CH IR O PR AC T I C Nearly 30% of Arizonans experience food insecurities, including 1 in 4 Arizona children. Poor access to healthy food choices, especially in childhood, significantly increases the likelihood of developing health-related conditions like Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. Access to nutritional food choices is truly vital to good health and well-being. That’s why we are hosting a Holiday Food Drive at Moon Valley Chiropractic through November and December to give back to our cherished community and help keep the healthy food choices flowing through our local St Mary’s Food Bank. Proper nutrition is essential for good health, and we aim to safeguard our friends and neighbors by providing sufficient resources to thrive in wellness, especially during this holiday season. We chose to collaborate with St Mary’s Food Bank because of their excellent reputation and distribution model. We appreciate the opportunity to partner in channeling nutritious foods directly to local individuals, through school programs, and family outreach projects like the Kids Café School Pantry and Backpack programs. The Community Kitchen and Lift Program additionally provides important handson job skills training opportunities for our community members navigating employment barriers. Chiropractic care has always focused on aligning individuals with a holistic lifestyle that leads to less pain, enhances nervous system function, and improves our body’s natural health defenses. Good nutrition is vital to one’s overall health and physical functioning and, therefore, deserves extra time and attention. Moon Valley Chiropractic desires to give back in ways that help ensure the greater well-being of our community members. St Mary’s Food Bank is especially seeking contributions of high-priority items like peanut butter, canned goods, pasta, rice, beans, and water. Please feel free to bring your donations to our food drive collection box located in our office lobby. To schedule a chiropractic appointment, please call us at 602-298-0292

Rookie Mom: Thank You for Rehoming Our Family Dog, Arizona Humane Society! B Y B R I G H I D CO N S TA B L E Rehoming our almost 4-year-old rescue Fable was definitely one of the toughest decisions we’ve made as a family. Fable is a quarantine pup, which means she didn’t have much socialization because the dog parks were closed, people were worried about dogs catching Covid-19, too, so walks around the neighborhood block were sparse. “Fabey-baby” – as we affectionately called her – was just that, the baby of our family. Brynn was then 3 when we adopted her in April 2020, and the two ruled the roost and lovingly grew together. But, when Henry was born last year, Fable proved to have more than a tough time understanding how to deal with this new addition. It started with fear, then intrigue, and then agitation – especially as Henry started crawling. If Henry would be near her dog bowl, a growl. If Henry started eating food freely in the living room, a growl. If Henry even tried to go near Fable, a growl. So instead of being focused on my actual baby, I was honestly focused on if my son would annoy my dog. Or if the bark would turn into a growl. Or a growl into something more. It was a constant stress for me and my husband – but mostly for Fable. And instead, it was hard to give the love and attention that Fable needed to thrive as a young dog. What was just a throw-away action of Fable’s became an annoyance: barking for protection at the front door, wanting to cuddle at night when I just returned from feeding my son, etc. It just wasn’t fair to her, to us… and you get the point. Adam and I really took our time deciding whether or not to rehome Fable. It started as a joke and then a back-and-forth between that and serious research. The serious research brought us to The Arizona Humane Society, where we actually adopted our cat Zooey in January 2014. We had an amazing experience with our adoption experience where Zo was actually rehomed herself… surrendered the actual day we adopted her. So Adam and I knew this was the loving experience of what we wanted for Fable. Now, I’m definitely not advertising to rehome your animal. Of course the goal is to try and make it work. It took our family about 6 months of really observing how Fable’s behavior affected our family negatively. But, I really loved a few options that Arizona Humane Society provided for the surrendering process. First, your pet needs to be vetted before surrender. There’s an online form that works on the first step, but once you pass that, there’s an appointment for the second. At the second appointment, Fable needs to have all of her vaccines in order – but they’ll do any missing ones for you. They also provide heartworm, etc. They also do another series of reviews by the veterinarian and other animals. Once that goes through and you pass, you’ll have 2 weeks later to surrender your pet (also to make sure that the vaccine period passed). This is also an opportune time to reconsider your rehoming decision.
The day we surrendered Fable, I was bawling like crazy – filled with guilt, guilt, guilt. BUT, I knew I made the right decision for Fable and my family. When I paid the $90 surrender fee and checked the website later, I was really excited to see that her adoption fee was on the “higher end” because it meant that she’d be protected by a family who would really invest in her like we had. Of course to someone who would love her. But also someone who was really going to put in the effort. And although I have no idea who will adopt Fable, I know her life will be better than what she has now because… as hard as this is to admit, she’ll be with a family that can dedicate her with the time and attention she needs. With that, I just wanted to thank the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for giving local families an option to surrender and adopt in an ethical atmosphere. Our family is so beyond grateful for having to do both. To adopt a new furrever friend, visit the Arizona Humane Society at www. azhumane.org/adopt or stop by the Sunnyslope location just around the corner 9926 N. 13th Avenue.

PAUL S TANTON SUPER INTENDENT, WESD Greetings WESD Partners and Community Members, It is Dr. Paul Stanton again, and what a privilege it is to serve as the Superintendent of the Washington Elementary School District. It is from the heart when I say that our district has incredible teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, and many other staff members who are dedicated to changing the lives of students. I cannot express my gratitude enough for them and for you, our partners and community members, for your continued support of the WESD. Thank you. Mountain Sky Volleyball Teams Win District Championships Congratulations to the seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams at Mountain Sky Junior High School for recently winning district championships! The WESD Family is proud of all our students who participated in the volleyball season for displaying their skills and incredible sportsmanship. A special shout out to their coaches for their support and guidance and to our WESD families for supporting extracurricular activities. Support Your Local WESD School with a Tax Credit Donation As we enter into the season of giving, please consider making a tax credit donation to a WESD school. Your donation provides WESD students with the opportunity to succeed in extracurricular activities and funds items such as uniform replacements, equipment, stipends for coaches and sponsors. By making a tax credit donation, you will also receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your state income taxes. To help enhance the life of a child and make a tax credit donation today, please visit www.wesdschools.org/taxcredit. The WESD is thankful for your support. For more information, please call 602-347-2631. WESD Provides September Attendance Campaign Results The WESD is proud to share results from its September Attendance Awareness Month campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to highlight the importance of attending school and to increase daily attendance across the district. The WESD’s daily attendance rate for September was 92.86%! This is a great achievement as the daily attendance goal for the school year is 93.96%. A special shout out to Lookout Mountain Elementary School whose individual attendance rate was 94% for September! Great job to the entire WESD Community for making attendance a priority!
